Friday past I thought I would take myself (and drag the Hubby) along to the Bear club and have a bit of an ooggle at all those hunky, hirsute men. So I had my shower, sprayed all me orifices with me best smelly stuff, fluffed up all me hairy bits and toddled along to 'My Father's Mustache'. All the way there I fantasized about big hairy men and all the things they might do to me if I played my cards right! Finally I reached the bar and plucked up the courage to go in... only to find that no-one was there, well speak about bursting yer bubble... so cum on guys what's the score? I mean I know that bears are by nature wild untamed creatures but isn't it about time you settled down and built yourselves a permanent lair? I'm sure I'm not the only bear hunter in the city so maybe you could drop me a note and let me know what's happening with the club. Pride in Aberdeen in '97' There's a rumour going around that Pride Scotland plan to hold next years event in the city. I spoke to Laura Norris of Pride and she told me that "The location won't be finally decided until our AGM in October, after public meetings in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The provisional plan was to hold the first few Prides alternately in Glasgow and Edinburgh, with Aberdeen hopefully being added onto that circuit by 2001". So it looks like we'll have to wait a couple of years, but hey maybe that's not a bad thing... give all those closet queens time to prise themselves out!!!! Whilst on the subject of rumours... there's word that the owner of Liberty in Dundee is looking at the possibility of finding a property up here, now I know that these rumours always seem to be flying around all over the place but hey lets keep our fingers crossed that this one cums true, after all a little competition never hurt anyone... right Jacqui, and I remember not too long ago when we had somewhere to go prior to the club to get us really in the mood for a good night out. So, lets hope it won't be yet another one of those dead rumours. Well if anyone was out at the weekend at the Caberfeidh you will have undoubtedly noticed a fresh influx of hot young threshers (God bless Aberdeen University) getting to grips with their new found sexual freedom. It's always fun to watch as all the older queens scurry around these young guys making complete prats of themselves buying them drinks all night only to watch them leave at the end of the night without them! The Caberfeidh has been hosting hosting a couple of live PA's , the first of which was a live performance on Thursday 26 September by club diva Suzan Rhye who sang her cover of the Celine Dion song 'Because you love me'. The next live PA will be from Newton who will be performing a couple of numbers ' Sky-high' and 'Sometimes when we touch'. Regulars will recognize these songs from Elaine's playlist. Sorry to see that our Jacqui has been off ill in hospital recently but Elaine insures me she is doing well now and should be back soon. And hasn't the summer flown by? We had to come to a collective decision to put our electric fire on the other day and it's still only September! Business is going well at Devas. The women's pool competitions are proving very successful - the last one being won by Ann M. However, the men's first competition was a complete washout with only a couple of guys bothering to turn up. So, hard cheese fellas - it's cancelled! Karen organised a male vocalist who appeared two weeks running but, as usual, hardly anyone came along and supported him the second week which was a real shame as the chap was quite good. If I hear anyone moaning that nothing ever happens in Dundee, I swear I'll kick them where it hurts! Anyway fellas - this one is for you, so sit up and take notice - there is to be a Men Only night on 11th October at Devas to coincide with the Women's Disco - cause let's be honest, hardly any women go to the pub when the disco is on! So support it or lose it! Liberty nightclub is still going strong and still attracting people from all over the country and in fact there were even some chaps from London in last Saturday. If you want to benefit from the one pound discount before midnight make sure you are there in good time cause if there's a queue, which is not uncommon, then you might end up having to pay the full entry price as they are rightly very strict on the door (as a few friends and I discovered to our cost one night!). You have been warned. Besides, it's nice to get in and have a boogie before the dance floor gets too crowded. As I mentioned earlier, the Women's Disco is on Friday 11th October from 8pm midnight at Sinatras. Liberty's have promised lots of fliers to benefit from the discount if you fancy going onto the club later so make sure you pick one up on the night. Joy is moving - after only a month or so at the Royal Chimes, they're going monthly at Wilkie House - first date is Saturday 19th October. The Fruit Shop opens for business as a weekly on Sunday 27th October. Tackno is round in Market Street on the last Sunday of the month. Whilst Taste goes strong every Sunday at The Honeycomb. Only Fluffy seems to have packed up - but Paul Craig tells me that it may come back! The Fruit Shop is going to be in the fairly plush surroundings of Walker's Nightclub in Shandwick Place and will feature Alan (JOY), Trendy Wendy (Tackno) and Pete Himsworth (Laughing Duck, Blue Oyster, Millie's) plus a regular cabaret. The wrong end of town for me, but then what do I know? If you're into buns, you might just be lucky enough to get some at Cafe Streuselkuchen in Broughton Street - if Scottish Power ever get round to installing the new cable. Everything was ready - apart from the lecky. Worth looking in if only for the long faces of the proprietors whose opinions of the Great British Workperson must be getting more unprintable day by day! Seriously, the place should be open by the time you read this. But then, I think I may have said that last month! Popped up to the Festival Theatre for the AGM of Gay Mens' Health. A good turnout! GHM have a new worker Fergus Clerkin, who will be focussing on the commercial gay scene. A good turnout too at Switchboard's ceilidh in the Assembly Rooms - demonstration line dancing but as for the rest of the dancing, there was more enthusiasm than accuracy! First there was all the alleged outrage about that kiss in EastBenders between Simon and Tony. According to the media, the Great British public was up in arms at this one. Disgusting!! Shouldn't have been shown, screamed the trashy tabloids, including one writer who wanted to know how parents were supposed to explain two blokes snogging to their sprogs! Dead easy, tell them the truth, and they won't grow up to be ignorant, bigoted Neanderthals like their parents!! The press went on to tell us how the BBC was SWAMPED with complaints!!! If you read the small print you found that there were in fact only 150. Now let's see, 150 complaints, 8 MILLION viewers, that means that Simon and Tony managed to upset one in 53 THOUSAND people, almost one fifth of one percent of the great unwashed!! Not what I'd call being SWAMPED with complaints. Anyway, are we really supposed to believe that this pair are fairies? OK, Simon's good looking enough to be credible, but as for Tony???? PUHLEEZE!!! (Oh, Yes Please! Ed.) no real fruit would be seen with such a naff hyperhorrendouslyheterosexualhaircut. And as for that flat, YUK!! Ditch NAFFITYS crappy stuff and get it poofterised now!! Doesn't that naff fifties sideboard just make you want to reach for the chain saw!! Second example of attempted media manipulation was the case of two gay men and their surrogate child. The Daily Express managed to make this run for a couple of days, telling us how shocked and outraged we should all be. Strange how they did not get ANY readers letters of complaint, and the only two published on the subject were from straights offering their compassion and support. The Daily Record managed to provoke a few readers into raising pen to paper. Only straight couples make good parents, they tried to tell us. Yeah, right!! I think Childline would disagree with them on that one. Are we really supposed to believe that a straight woman who has just lost custody of one child, and is now having octuplets to a man she has only been in a short term relationship with and is sharing with another woman, will make a better parent than a gay guy? It would appear not to matter if you're a convicted criminal, a drug addict, an alcoholic, single, 14 years old, or even a practising Satanist, just as long as you're heterosexual. They can even give their kids stupid names such as Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily, and nobody complains. Doubtless some of the less enlightened would agree with the straight couple who thought it was a "bit of a laugh" to allow their 2 year old son to smoke, as reported earlier this month. The church reacted predictably. No doubt the official view is that Bishop Roddy Wright's abandoned and embittered 15 year old son will grow up to be well adjusted in his heterosexual, unemployed single parent environment. Funny isn't it, how some of those who scream loudest about fidelity, morality and families have the most to hide. RIP Nicky Fairbairn and friends!! Talking of the church, have they not noticed that the number of straights getting married is falling, and the number of gay couples tying the knot rises year by year? And talking of the Daily Record, did anybody else notice that quite a few of Lorna Frame's Hot 100 Hunks are dead, gay or both!! Strathclyde Police are now allowing lesbigays to join the force, so if you like a bit of uniform, here's your chance! Don't know how this will be received, as the boys in blue still seem to be having a bit of a problem with their black colleagues. Alex and Gordon are confident that Centurion Health Club will be open for business at the end of October. When I last saw the place, it looked like a building site, and the guys were ripping out all the old partitions before sending in the tradespeople. For those of you intimidated by straight health clubs, Centurion will be ideal, as it will be a gay-owned and run club operating specifically for gay men. Instructors will be on hand to ensure you don't ladder your Lycra (), break your nails or try to pump bits you're not supposed to. Where is it? Not saying yet, but I've been in it, and can tell you it's bang in the centre of town, within mincing distance of Marks & Spencers. Talking of Markies, I was in Tescos a couple of weeks ago when I noticed this guy in a pair of shorts pushing a trolley around. There was something vaguely familiar about the legs, and then I realised it was Betty Hutton without the slap and a frock! 2 celebrities out shopping at the same time and you missed it! Gillespies is really pulling out the stops now, with lots more PA's and cabaret organised. The club is now under new management, with the very friendly Martha in charge. Lesbian Disco now on last Friday of the month. If you fancy a bit of Country and Western dancing, this is now being taught on Friday nights from 8pm onwards. I moaned in the last issue about there not being any lights over the pool tables, and am pleased to see that these have now been installed. Entry to Madge's is only ukp1 during the week, and ukp3 Friday, ukp4 Saturday, although I think those who've been drinking (SPENDING!!) in the bar earlier should be given flyers to get cheaper entry to the disco, as they used to. I assume that my VIP Pass IS in the post? Oh, forgot to mention that the disco is being redecorated at the moment, and the front bar is now brighter. Will tell you all about the opening night next issue. The Hatt Club, 228 Clyde Street, is now opening as a gay venue 3 nights a week, Friday to Sunday.
