But if it's too cold to go out, maybe you'll find a nice bedwarmer in our extensive Meet Market... In this issue: Aberdeen Dundee Edinburgh Glasgow The ScotsGay Meet Market Venues ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ABERDEEN ======== Greetings from the pen of the 'short fat bald one'. God, can you believe it's only 5 weeks til Christmas - where the hell has the year gone? Well, this month's certainly been a hectic one for yours truly: first there was my little sister's wedding at the start of the month - ended up dressed like someone's butler but, hey, it was different. Didn't think much of the husband to be, but the best man wasn't too bad - hey a girl can look, can't she? Then there was my Graduation - yes, it is true, yours truly does have a brain - I'm not quite as dizzy as I look! And God, didn't I look hot in my lovely robes NOT!!!!! But, hey, it was a good excuse to get all 'dragged' up. Then of course it was my birthday. They say you get wiser with age. Well I, certainly feel older, I'm not so sure about wiser, but you can't have it all - after all looks and wisdom could be quite a deadly combination. Never mind, one out of two ain't bad! Anyway, enough of this procrastinating - let's get on with the job at hand. Let's start with yet the latest from the on-going saga of the Aberdeen Bears' Club - well the latest rumours would seem to be that the guys have been asked to migrate from their recent hibernating grounds at 'My Father's Moustache' due to recent events during Octobearfest. Rumour has it that some of the visiting bears got a bit over adventurous and turned up at the venue in all their leather clad glory and needless to say the venue's straight clientele took exception to this and the guys were asked to find a new meeting (or should that be mating?) spot. So if any of you hairy guys out there have any suggestions for a new meeting place, drop me a line to the address at the bottom of the page and I'll pass on the suggestions to the club members. Well, whilst on the subject of rumours, I can now confirm that the Pink Flamingo has been bought over by our very own Tracy Lefevre and will be opening on the 29th November as a bar/club and not as a bistro. The club will be re-opened under the name of 'Castro' and will be open from 5pm till 2am every night. During the week the club will be free entry and two pounds after midnight at the weekend. The club's resident DJ will be our very own Mark Adams and he will be accompanied by various guest DJ's including an appearance from time to time by Allan "Sophie" Sadler. The doors open on the 29th to the public at 9pm with the press and VIP launch at 7.30pm which yours truly will of course be attending being the mega-tastic super star that he is (I wish!). So, watch this spot for a full report on the opening bash. Well let's hope that the gay community will make full use of both the city's venues, after all we've all screamed our tits off for a second venue... let's put our money where our mouths are, shall we folks?!!!! Things are still ticking over nicely at the Caberfeidh, and there seem to be more and more new faces turning up every week which is very encouraging and also gives all the old timers something nice to look at! The recent PA from Sarina went down very well although it could still have been better attended , but I guess it takes time for new things to catch on. The karaoke has been cancelled for the time being on Tuesdays due to poor attendance which is quite surprising as I always thought the scene would jump at the chance to exercise their vocal chords and take off their fave icons! Never mind, keep up the good work ladies! So what else is going on then I hear you scream? - well Aberdeen Lesbian and Gay Switchboard are currently recruiting new members at the moment to begin work in January. So if you think you have what it takes to staff the phones and help out with the charity work than call the switchboard and they will send you out an application form. Remember, it is a very responsible job but can be very rewarding - so go on, do your bit for the community! On a lighter note it was quite cool to see the Bon-Accord Centre lights being switched on by the Bloody Mary's - Aberdeen's top drag band. Also in attendance was Cobra from ITV's Gladiators - needless to say, he looked very resplendent with all his muscles bulging out in just the right places, although I must admit I was only interested in one bulge - hey I'm only human! Returning to the city by popular demand are 'Bjorn Again', the ABBA lookalikey and soundalikey band. This should prove to be a very popular concert if the last one was anything to go by. The concert takes place on the 19th December in the Capitol Theatre on Union Street and will no doubt be well attended by all the 70's disco queens (shouldn't that be dancing queens?) out there. Yours truly will hopefully be interviewing the group for the next issue and will be attending the concert purely for professional reasons you understand!!!! So watch this space for a full report. Moray LGB Switchboard in Elgin are holding their Xmas Dinner and Fancy Dress Party on Saturday 21st December at the Rothes Glen Hotel near Elgin. Tickets are ukp15 - details from Elgin (01343) 541188. Well I guess that's about it all folks, I'm off to polish my platforms and press my flares but before I go I have to wish my hubby a happy birthday for the 29th November, I know he'll be totally embarrassed by this but, hey Mike, them are the breaks - have a great day, love you tons, darling. Take care, fuck hard but fuck safe, remember a boyfriend's for life not just for Christmas!!!!! LittleBear AKA Doug Stewart littlebear@drink.demon.co.uk ---------------------------------------------------------------- DUNDEE ====== Christmas is coming and with the recent spell of freezing cold weather and horrendous gales I am beginning to appreciate why some people prefer to sit cosied up by the fire and put up with the innumerous boring repeats on the telly rather than brave the chill to go out and socialise. So has it stopped me from getting out and about this month to bring you news of what's going down in the rather Northerly City of Dundee? You bet your life it hasn't! However, the other curse of my life has prevented me from being my usual party self - money, or rather lack of it! Never mind, I will do my best as usual to make something out of nothing to keep Herr Editor happy. Devas is surviving the weather and Fridays and Saturdays are still quite busy. The women's pool comp. is next on Wednesday 27th November with cash prizes. You don't need to be the female Stephen Hendry to take part, it's all a bit of fun and a chance to spend an evening with other women so why not make it to the next one! Perhaps they should try a bingo night for the guys, maybe they would come out for that instead of pool? Or perhaps a handbag throwing competition? Seriously, a quiz night with prizes might go down well, who knows? If there is something you'd like guys, speak to Karen or Marilyn about it. They do want to provide the customers with entertainment that will be enjoyed and supported. I confess I haven't been to Liberty nightclub for three weeks or so due to my aforementioned financial situation but my spies inform me that everything is still going well and the gigs are proving successful. I have had some moans from women about paying to get in only to discover that there is a male stripper on and they would have preferred to know before entering the premises that this was happening so perhaps a poster could be displayed prominently to warn them and then it would be up to them whether they want to go in or not. Knowing the management I suspect this may already be happening as they always go out of their way to keep the customers happy. The Women's Party Nite at the Weaver Arms in Princes Street was on Friday 22nd November with line dancing and instruction plus then the usual excellent mix of music from DJ Sooz. The next Women's Disco at Sinatras is on Friday 20th December and as it is the Christmas disco there will be a special surprise on entry. This is going to be the event of the year so be there! Good luck with the Christmas shopping folks! Jol PS. Devas have installed Beamish Red as promised last issue. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- EDINBURGH ========= Well, that was a pleasant gay shopping evening at Virgin! Suzann Rye belting out a few of her numbers, the place full of pooves and dykes, free alcoholic beverages, Gay Men's Health handing out lots of free goodies - not to mention a free party afterwards! Just a shame that the promised model from the Prowler mucky videos didn't make it up from London - but there was quite enough home grown talent to compensate! Oh yes indeedie! Sorry to see that Stevie at Route 66 has parted company with his old employers. It appears that Maclay's have attracted his talents to run a restaurant for them over in the West End. No doubt it will be fairly mixed in its clientele! Meanwhile, Craig is temporarily in charge of the 69 whilst the brewery work out who to appoint as Stevie's successor. The empty unit next to the pub looks as if it has changed hands at last - I hear that it's likely to be yet another Italian restaurant. A new phenomenon has hit the boozers around the Playhouse as a result of the rather wrinkly Cliff Richard's show which is on there for an extended season. Called Cliffhangers, these are his fans who seem somewhat bewildered as they stray into queer territory and look as lost as no doubt the very heterosexual Mr Richard would if he went in for a pint after the show rather than praising his Lord in the church at the top of Broughton Street. What's white and slithers across the floor? Why, Come Dancing, of course! Lothian Switchboard are holding ballroom dancing lessons every Sunday night from 8-9.30pm at Club Mercado. This is so that you all know what to do by the time Switchboard's Grand Ball comes up on 7th March. The lessons cost ukp2.50 (ukp2 concessions) but this includes free entry to Playmates and discount entry to Tachno. Sounds like fun! Wonder what else one can use the Sliperene for? December 12th sees the Western Stars Line Dancing descend upon the Leith Assembly Rooms again for their Xmas Boot Scoot. The numbers at the classes have more than doubled since they outraged the Switchboard Ceilidh with their pelvic rolls and bumps, so I'd expect quite a turnout at the do. Gay Men's Health are holding an open meeting for anyone interested in their work on the commercial gay scene in Edinburgh. Since October, when the project's remit expanded to include work in our community venues, Fergus Clerkin has been meeting with venue managers and employees as well as other agencies working with gay and bisexual men in Edinburgh to get some feedback on what people want to see happen. The team at Gay Men's Health are also keen to get people who have ideas about this area of work involved in planning and participating for the delivery of what is obviously a very important service for those of us who socialise on the scene. The meeting will be held in the Empire Rooms at the Festival Theatre, kindly donated for this purpose free of charge, from 2pm on Saturday December 7th, and there will be a social afterwards in Cafe Lucia. Anyone with questions or ideas about the scene work is most welcome to come along. Further information from Fergus Clerkin on 0131-229 5995. Sorry to see that OUTRIGHT Scotland didn't bother turning out to lay a wreath at the Remembrance Day ceremony. In London, only three folk from Rank Outsiders turned up at the Cenotaph - and they had been invited to take part by the Royal British Legion. In Edinburgh, we've never been invited, but we've usually managed to make it. Perhaps someone else will take over the task from OUTRIGHT next year? On a more JOYful note, Alan Nicholls tells me that the new Joy single "Joy Tracks - Tealumps" made it into Pete Tong's "Cool Cuts Countdown" on BBC Radio 1. At number 20 no less! Release date from Red Ant Records is 25th November. Meanwhile JOY at Wilkie House is continuing to attract lots of JOYful folk. That's it from me for this month. I'll see you all for Xmas and the New Year ... Iain Iain@drink.demon.co.uk ------------------------------------------------------------------------ GLASGOW ======= Well, I've really left things to the last minute this time! Due out clubbing in 2 hours, so let's get the column written, and I can get outta here! Things have been a bit quiet on the Glasgow scene recently, just one of the times of the year when clubland is a bit quieter than normal, but it's starting to pick up again. As most of you are aware, weekends at Bennets have been tremendously busy since the club re-opened. This is always the case for the first few months after any club is refurbished, and Club X and Gillespies have both been hit by the mad rush to get into Bennets. Fortunately, the trend has now started to reverse, and the scene is now starting to distribute itself more evenly throughout the three clubs. Club X has now started giving out free passes, and I believe that Martha from Madges will be doing something similar shortly. Personally, I can't understand people shivering outside Bennets in the naive hope that you'll get to the head of the queue before the curfew starts. Some weekends the doors are shut at 11.30 because the place is so busy. If you are determined to get in, make sure you get down early! It's a pity that a lot of people would prefer to waste their time standing in a queue, than hop off down to Gillespies. If you can't be bothered to walk, take a taxi. It'll cost you less than 2 quid from the city centre. Get into the club before midnight, and there's no entry to pay. The bar prices are a lot cheaper too at ukp1.50 for a pint. There have been a few good nights down on Cheapside street recently. Betty B of Austins fame hosted the Glagow heat of Miss Drag U.K. It was a funny night, even if you're not really into this kind of thing, with the first prize going to Fonda Cox, who won ukp100. Cabaret was provided by Electra and Xenia, who does a great impersonation of Cher. I'm not sure what Cheryl, alias Cammyss special prize was for. Was it for being the only female impersonator that didn't bother to shave their legs, or was it an apology from Betty B for her remarks about his alleged er, um, oh, um, er ......occupation?. There were a few other funny moments that night, like the drag queen who went up on stage trailing a length of bog paper from her stiletto. For those of you wondering where Glasgow's other famous Betty was that night, could it really be true that she's barred?. The clairvoyant night was held after being postponed due to unforeseen circumstances (honest). Don't know whether you believe in this sort of thing, but it left me thinking that there may be something in it after all. Due to a changeover of the licence, the bar area has been closed recently, but should be re-opening shortly. Can't wait as I'm missing my game of pool. Anybody got an official rumour regarding the opening date for the Polo Club? At the time of writing, nothing definite seems to be known (28th November according to Brendan Nash - Ed). I suppose the name will become associated with mints, and being the place to go to get your hole. Opening date for Centurion Health Club still not finalised, but now looks like being the end of December. Tradespeople are still in after a delay in getting some certificate or other. I'm told that PJ's are giving up their shop at the GGLC. To lose one tenant is a misfortune. To lose two? Anybody interested in setting up a business or shop in the Gay and Lesbian Centre. Ground floor units available... give them a call. Who else read Simon from Boyz article a few weeks ago about all the family values crap that's been in the papers recently? Absolutely dead spot on Simon!! As he pointed out, most of those assaulted, raped or killed are victims of crime within the family. Don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against the concept of the family, I just wish politicians, the church and the gutter press would realise that it is not the only acceptable lifestyle. And why have the tabloids suddenly started going on about gay marriages? Has nobody told them that gay people have been getting married for years!! Not exactly something new. There was an interesting scene up in The Elephants' Graveyard recently. Seems that Martha was out flyering, when the DJ decided to slag off Gillespie's music. Words were exchanged in public, then continued with an inter-managerial meeting in the office. The punters thought it was all hilarious, and it finally ended with the manager having to phone up and apologize on behalf of his DJ. If Kenny thinks he's so good, how come he's not exactly packing them in? Well, that's it then, time to get my party frock on and get off into town, see you next month!. P.S. ...I hear that Little Bear has decided to continue writing the Aberdeen page. He told the Ed he was going to give up as he's now working full time, but I don't think a paper round constitutes "a full time career in journalism" I'm outta here!!....
