I mean there's only so many things you can do with a turkey!!! Got some really cool pressies though. No big bulging black man in sight but hey, you can't have everything now, can you? Well New Year's Eve found me sitting here listening to Copstick and Scarlet on Freedom Radio, sad person that I am, but hey that's what you get for living out in the back of beyond isn't it? Never mind, I sure made up for it on the 2nd when I went to see Boy George DJing at Castro's. Anyway on with the job at hand. I guess you want to know what's been happening since the last issue. You know all those tacky jokes that start with 'A funny thing happened to me on the way to...' ? Well, off me and my boyfriend trotted to the local gay club for a night of drunken debauchery... y'know, like you do. There we were quietly minding our own business at the bar, ogling at all the talent as it came through the door, when this pissed guy came in. We thought he was a misplaced straight and decided just to ignore him. After a few Voddies and water he decided he was gonna speak to us, but nothing could have geared us up for what he was going to say. After a few slurred attempts he finally got the words out he was looking for and turned to us and said "All I want is to wank a guy's cock" followed by the obligatory "I'm not gay or anything". After the initial shock wore off, we decided to decline his offer and left him to it. Whether he got his wish or not I couldn't tell you, but he did disappear before we did, so who knows! It's still a bit strange having another club up here to go to but everyone seems to be getting used to it, if last night was anything to go by. We got to Castro's around ten and it was already pretty busy and the atmosphere was really good with the music just loud enough to enjoy and also talk over without having to shout or use sign language! The club seems to be taking off really well and there seems to be a fair mixture of people using the venue, I even spotted a fellow Leatherman! Which made me feel a bit better about wearing my full leathers to the club (Hi Fraser! See, I did keep my word.). It doesn't seem to be doing too much harm to the Caberfeidh as a lot of people appeared to be staying in Castro's till the back of twelve and then heading off to the Caberfeidh for the last couple of hours. There you go girls, the city is big enough for the both of you! The Grampian Bear Club have started meeting again at Castro's on Fridays at 9.30pm - woof! Anyway 1996, was a pretty good year for the Aberdeen gay community. A new club opened, Bjrn Again returned for another magnificent gig, and, most importantly, ScotsGay got a new Aberdeen Scene Queen and waved Bye Bye to dear 'OLE' Minerva with a tear in their eyes (NOT!) and hello to a new era of positivity. Anyway I'm running off at the mouth again (isn't it amazing how a few shots of The Macallan loosens the tongue!) so I guess all that's left for me to do is to wish all the staff and readers of ScotsGay a very Happy New Year. Instead, we thought you might like to know what's going on a bit further North (Dundee will return in our next issue - promise!). The MuGGS bunch have been running regular social events for some time now and the most recent was a Christmas Extravaganza held at the Rothes Glen Hotel. After a three course meal and the auction of a couple of water colours (both bought by Alistair Leslie), proceedings moved onto the Fancy Dress Awards Ceremony. Best Dressed Male was Andrew (The Matador on our front cover) and his hand crafted prize was presented by Postulant (Shouldn't that be "pestilent"? - Ed.) Sisters Bobby and Gus of the Order of Perpetual Indulgence. Mine Hosts for the evening were Freddie and Michael of the Rothes Glen Hotel who spent much of the evening in full swing at the bar. Sister Bobby has also been out manifesting herself recently (dirty little bugger) to raise funds for the group. A trip to Aberdeen managed to raise over ukp43 - who says that Aberdonians are tight! The Moray LGB Switchboard is up and running each Tuesday and Friday evening from 7-11pm on Elgin (01343) 541188. For such a small place, Elgin really does have a rather fun scene - one which lots of folk are travelling to from all over Scotland. Long may it continue! ---------------------------------------------------------- EDINBURGH --------- Hiol! The latest addition to the city's eateries is Flames, a pleasant, brightly lit, clean and airy looking place in Morrison Street (nice and convenient for Bobbies Bookshop). Run by Steve McLean (ex Route 66), Flames is mixed rather than gay but is gay friendly with lots of gay staff! Cuisine is International, includes a good vegetarian range, and all the food is freshly prepared and cooked on the premises. Talking of Route 69, April 6th will see an appearance by the Total Re-Call Show whose dazzling and stunning show is sure to astound. Hearsay will be making their usual monthly appearance in February whilst Craig tells me that he's planning something different for St Valentine's Night! Down at the LGB Centre in Broughton Street, all is not well. Frank and Volker from Streuselkuchen have departed after they discovered that the Council had not granted all neccessary permissions to run a cafe. They claim that they're some ukp60,000 worse off after all they've put into the place and I gather that Me Learned Friends have been instructed. Meanwhile, SHRG Properties Director and former Council Planning Officer Ian Dunn (who Volker claims assured them all was well with regard to council permissions) has handed out leaflets advertising his proposal to take on the tenancy of the cafe space and run Stonewall - Edinburgh's Original Gay Village Cafe as his livelihood. He's projecting an opening date of 24th February. When asked by ScotsGay about his position as a Director of SHRG Properties Ltd, the company which would grant any such tenancy, Ian said "I have put my resignation letter in. The Board of SHRG Properties will be taking a decision about the lease of the cafe and will make a decision about the resignation at the same time". In other words - he'll resign if he gets the lease. Bearing in mind the recent history of Broughton Street, he probably will. As for his position as a Director of the Charity that runs the Centre he said, "I don't know if that will be affected". It may be that the best way forward is for Ian to get the lease - but if allegations of conflicts of interest are to be avoided, the lease should be, at the very least, widely advertised. That potential unpleasantness out of the way, a date for your diary must be 7th of March when Lothian Gay and Lesbian Switchboard are having their Ceilidh Ball Disco at the Assembly Rooms in George Street. Tickets are ukp10/ukp8 and are available from all the usual culprits or phone the Ticketline on 0131-220 4349. For the first time, as well as a ceilidh band, there will be loud popular noise from Tackno which should draw in a slightly different crowd to usual. I've been asked to say something nice about Stirling. Glad to! It seems that Forth Friend's monthly disco is proving more and more poular. It's held in the Albert Hall on the first Saturday of each month from 8.30pm until late. Tickets available at the door. Apparently, it attracts a selection of prime queers from Town and Gown. Now can I say something horrid: Central Scotland Police!!! I hear rumours that yet another gay business may be opening up in Edinburgh. It seems that a straight pub is being eyed up and, if all goes well, we could soon have somewhere else to spend our Pink Pounds. Catch you all next month. It's January, nobody's got any money, so the scene is a bit quiet just now. Surprisingly, Christmas and New Year were both quieter than expected. Although Hogmanay revellers were packed in like sardines in Edinburgh, the opposite was happening in Glasgow, with only 5,000 people in George Square instead of the 30,000 expected. Maybe everyone was in Edinburgh, cos they certainly weren't here. Mind you, the weather didn't help. Being New Year's Eve, there was no way I was staying in, but at 3 in the morning, walking home half pished through driving snow and sub-zero temperatures with a kilt flapping round my shoulders didn't seem like such a good idea! What's the point in the taxis saying they're only charging ukp1.50 more at Hogmanay if they have all taken the night off? Remember I complained last month about clubs ripping off their clientele by jacking up entry prices over the festive period? I was expecting to get mail-bombed about my comments, but did not get a single complaint from any venue owner trying to justify their actions. Seems like the message got through to some of you. Is it any surprise that Club X was quiet on Christmas Eve when they were charging ukp6 to get in? Another club decided not to have a guest list on New Year's Eve, and make everybody pay to get in, including staff working in Glasgow's gay bars, who usually get in free after work. I hope these poor guys were getting double time for their previous night's work, or they would have needed to do 2 and a half hours behind a bar just to get enough wonga to pay the door charge. Talking about entry charges, who else thinks that the Polo Club is OTT with theirs? Still, nothing on the scene is forever, the dress code being a prime example! The drinks prices are keeping a lot of people away, perhaps these will also be revised. (A pint of beer costs around 89 pence wholesale, and that's including VAT and NO barrellage discount, for those who are interested). Another lesbigay publication has decided not to publish on the Internerd, saying 'who uses it anyway?'. Well actually over 50 million people, and if you use the 10% are bent equation, it's not surprising that ScotsGay is not only the most widely circulated Scottish gay mag in the country, but also the world. Yes folks, there are people all over the world who actually read this column. Also I will soon have a separate WWW site for Glasgow, which will be updated regularly with stuff. Even managed to get arrested in Dubai, poisoned in the Congo, had a narrow escape from religious fundamentalists in the Middle East, crossed a minefield on foot, got deported from Canada, shot at in Greenland, and interrogated by Angolan mercenaries when I was working in the bush during the war. So there you are Doug, see what people do to keep your Austin Allegro in petrol! Talking of Austins, they are no longer open during the afternoons on weekdays, but will no doubt be carrying on with the weekend Karaoke sessions. There have been quite a few PAs down at Gillespies recently, and Martha tells me that she has more lined up for the future, I hope that Betty B is among them. All change down at the GGLC in Dixon Street. (I might as well tell you where it is, cos they seem to be trying to keep it a secret, judging by their non-advertising policy - except for the new sign). Astro Gifts have now taken over PJ's Watches, and Stuart and Gerry are now running both units, so now you've got plenty of choice for gay pressies!! Centurion Health Club is now open, so Number 18 in Edinburgh is no longer Scotland's only Gay Sauna, time to change your advert!! Even if you're happy with having a fuller figure, and don't want a pair of tits like Peter Andre, get on down to Centurion for a selection of cards, toys and clothing. 'Any person using foul language to the annoyance of others in licensed premises shall be guilty of an offence' So says the Licensing (Scotland) Act 1976, so I was a bit disappointed in one venue recently, to note that the language from behind the bar was as loud and abusive as that of the customers. It's not clever, and Plod takes a dim view! A few nice snippets in the press recently about us. Yet another Tory MP allegedly having a gay relationship. Yes, the party that preaches family values, morality blah, blah blah caught with its knickers down yet again (allegedly). Yes, poor old Jerry Hayes fairly got ripped to shreds by John Prescott about that one didn't he? Personally, I thought it quite ironic that the Hayes story came out on the same day as another MP got done for speeding, none other than John (WE are the party of law and order) Prescott!! Then there was a journalist complaining about gay charity MESMAC receiving lottery funding. Don't waste your breath sweetie! The Great British Public are FAR too greedy in their pursuit of money for sitting on their bums to care a toss about who it goes to! Let's face it, if the Lottery started dishing out the dosh to Pol Pot or Gerry Adams, would we see a huge overnight drop in the number taking part? Yeah! Right!! Just before Christmas, Martha and Laura down in Gillespies played host to gay men Shug Currie and Jason Saunders, who were getting married. The Daily Record were present and actually ran an article about it which started off very well, but I was a little disappointed (but not surprised), that they were unable to resist sticking the boot in by asking for the reactions of the Catholic Church and the Church of Scotland. In both cases, the replies were that marriage is for procreation, and therefore the ceremony should not be recognised. This actually resulted in a letter appearing in the paper soon after, asking if this line by the church meant that those over child bearing age, or infertile, should also not be allowed to marry. 'You know as well as I do it means nothing of the kind', was the response. Don't you just LOVE the way that the tabloids and the Churches enjoy selective interpretation of the Bible? Finally, I hear that a new gay-friendly cafe has opened in the West End. Will give you all more details when I've checked it out, but it should be listed in this issue.
