It seems that Tory shagging habits are going to be a major item in the election campaign. A shame to see LibDem Emma Nicholson pontificating about this. She's obviously forgotten about the short lived stushie that followed Paddy Ashdown being caught with his pants down. What made it so short lived was Paddy's up front and honest attitude. Perhaps other politicians should learn from this - especially those in the Labour Party who have just as many secrets which are, for the moment, being kept carefully hidden by the press. Mickey Hirst, closet though he may have been, at least had the decency to speak out for 16 as the gay male age of consent. Unlike the late, equally closet, Nicky Fairbairn who voted to retain 21. And unlike Michael Forsyth who voted for 18. As to openly queer candidates, it seems that our editor, John Hein, will be standing again in the Tweeddale Ettrick and Lauderdale Constituency as the Liberal Party in Scotland Candidate. It will be interesting to see how his intervention affects things now that the unlamented David Steel has departed. The Liberal Party is also standing another out gay man, Paul Coombes, in Edinburgh West - widely perceived as a key marginal. Any other out lesbians, gays or bisexuals of any party who are standing should drop ScotsGay a note and I'm sure they'll see their names in print. Personally, I'm putting a tenner on the Tories to win. New Labour has so alienated their traditional core voters by their rush to the right, that I fear that these voters will just stay at home - and who can blame them? After all, if you're on the dole or a low paid worker, does it really matter which of the Tory Parties get in? Meanwhile, back in the real world, one or two things have been happening around town. Club Mercado - Playmates has stopped running for now, though there's a rumour that it may start up again soon. Perhaps some better advertising might help. Orange too has fallen by the wayside, but I hear that Morgan is not deterred and is working on a new club with a new name. Let's hope that both clubs get the support that they deserve. Down at Route 69, April 6th will see an appearance by the Total Re-Call Show whose dazzling and stunning show is sure to astound, or so Craig tells me! I see that Cafe Kudos is on the market. According to selling agents Leslie Deans & Co, Kudos is a "lively bustling popular gay cafe bar with a very healthy turnover enjoying a high profile central location adjacent to the Playhouse. Great atmosphere." That sounds about right to me and seems a snip at "Offers over ukp310K"! I'm always amused to find straight bouncers on the door at the New Town. I'd have thought that the butch types who frequent the place would mean that there'd be no need for bouncers at all. I was obviously wrong! Of course, the event of the month has been the Stonewall Cafe in the Lesbian Gay and Bisexual Centre at the bottom of Broughton Street. Regular readers won't need to be reminded about the sorry saga behind Outright Scotland Convenor Ian Dunn's taking over of the cafe space. Nevertheless, it looks as if he seriously intends to make a go of the place. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were out in force to bless the new arrival which they did with their usual questionable taste and good humour - I mean, was there any need to mention the Germans? The decor of the room is most unusual - it's been done by Argyll based gay artist Stuart D Laing (who had to leave the 2pm opening early to get the last bus home - know how it feels, dear, I used to live up there too!). Prominent on the right wall is the mystical Green Man, whilst the ceiling fan is surrounded by an interesting circle of figures entitled "We are one". There's also an Icon depicting the proprietor himself in his guise as a Saint! An Inacon, perhaps? As to the comestibles, to give you an idea of prices, the All Day Breakfast is ukp2-95, whilst tea is 75p a cup (95p a mug) and proper coffee (they do instant too, but let's not mention that in polite company) is ukp1 a cup (ukp1.50 a pot). Strangely, the opening wasn't graced by a photographer from Gay Scotland - it obviously didn't come with a cheque attached. No doubt a freelance will be in touch, eh Dominic? Iain Iain@drink.demon.co.uk GLASCHU ------- Hiya sluts! For those of you who like a quiet sherry in the afternoon, you'll be glad that Austins has now re-opened during the day. There will also be some changes happening in the food department soon. Was in a couple of days ago, and had a quiet chuckle at the barman raiding the bosses handbag for something to put on his new tattoo. Slap some KY on it and take an aspirin! Another pub which has extended its opening hours is The Elephants Graveyard, AKA Squires. They are now open on Sunday afternoons, and there have been some changes to the scoobysnacks on offer. Seen all those posters in the pubs for a new Boyband? Wannabe a Spice-Queen? Can't sing, who gives a toss!! - Isn't a problem for 911. Contrary to rumour, no it's NOT gonna be fronted by the two Bettys! The GLC still has a unit to let, so give them a call if you want to start your own business. Must be somebody out there wanting to start a cottage industry. Ooh Err.. By the way, there is an advert on the notice board which made me laugh. Somebody is wanting to start up a gay ABBA fan club!! Only the gay scene could idolise the kings and queens of campery the way we do!! So, for all you Muriels out there, call 0141-943 1428 if you want to join. Think it's about time one of the clubs held an ABBA night, not been one recently. Isn't it getting confusing when you pick up all the gay freepress now. Used to be all standard sizes. Now we've got Boyz and The Pink in one size, Thud and APN in another, ScotsGay in A4, Pulse in A5 and G2 in a completely non standard size. Actually, is G2 still on the go, has it folded or is it just long overdue? Anybody know? Anybody care? And talking of the free press, I've finally persuaded the power that IS, at ScotsGay, to put out more copies. It's already got the highest circulation of all the mags, especially the one you have to pay for, but it seems like even THAT'S not enough, with some places running out of copies in DAYS!! Nice to know you LUV it so much!! GOSSIP... Did you know that some Lesbigay magazines run adverts for free, cos advertisers won't pay for them due to their low circulation. Went down to the Waterloo on Comic Relief Day. Place was as busy as ever, but the only ones in fancy dress were the bar staff. Pity so few people had made the effort to get tarted up for the occasion. Still, I had a good night out, got four offers during the course of the evening, including one before I'd even got up to the bar for my first drink! Not bad, eh? Nice to know Minerva's still got her WHOARRH!! factor. Might have been cos I was wearing my scrotty old bike jacket. ALWAYS does the trick!! Had it for years, weighs a TON with all the badges and it's covered in skid marks... No, not the ones you're thinking of, the ones you get riding motorbikes sideways along the Tarmac. Reminds me of a guy I used to know who never gave me a second glance if I was wearing ordinary clothes, but used to cream his knickers if I walked into my local in full bike gear! Anyway, I hope more of you will make an effort to dress up next year. PS What's all this fuss about Dolly the clone? - the Waterloo's been full of Dollys for years! Anyone else smell a rat when they read a letter moaning about me in the last issue?? In all the time I've been writing this column, nobody has EVER accused me of unfairly attacking gay venues, not even the clubs themselves, and I'm frequently praised for airing the moans of the gay scene. Bit fishy eh? Complaints = 1, Fanmail = loads!! Now, as if THAT'S not suspicious enough, the complaint actually came from someone with a vested interest in maintaining kudos with potential employers. No doubt Gav (whoever he/she/it used to be) will be the first to tell us that his views were his alone, but then he'd have to, wouldn't he, in case we thought he was just trying to impress somebody into hiring him. The club owners concerned will no doubt wish to distance themselves from his remarks, as they obviously wouldn't want to be suspected of trying to discredit me through a third party, would they now? Coupla questions though Gav. OK, you've worked in some of the clubs, SO WHAT?? The views of the hired help hardly constitute public opinion. It's no coincidence that the SceneQueens who write for the mags tend to have the same criticisms and praises about the same venues, and is simply because the scene make the same complaints and comments to other SceneQueens as they do to me. If Gav had actually MANAGED as many pubs and clubs as I have, he would know to LISTEN to what the public say, and sometimes the truth hurts!! He's fed up of all the bitchiness on the scene, yet calls me an anally retentive, stroppy, bitchy stuck up little queen!! SCUUUSE me Gav, but that seems a little BITCHY to me, perhaps you just want everyone ELSE to stop!! As he doesn't know who Minerva is, she's the goddess of Wisdom, who has now decreed that The Artist Formerly Known As Gav shall now be known as Janus (Janice in Gaelic, would I lie to you?), in view of his two faced hypocrisy!! As for Bennets not having a guest list on Hogmanay, I was only voicing the views of staff from other venues who moaned to me about having to pay to get in. I was in ANOTHER club that night, did Minerva PAY to get in you ask? Get a grip!! Me worry about upsetting club owners... WISE UP!! Other way round, pubs and clubs do their utmost to keep us columnists happy, in case we slag them off!! Magna est veritas et prevalebit, and no, that's nae Garlic!! Could it be that poor Gav just can't handle the fact that my adoring public actually LOVE this column, which is read not only in Scotland but also by squillions of fans on the Internerd. Until Janice achieves MY international celebrity status, and gets as much fan mail from all over the world as I do, who gives a toss what SHE thinks!! You can't please all of the peasants all of the time, and Janus probably wouldn't worry too much if anyone told her they thought she could mix concrete better than she can mix records! Touchy bunch DJs, and I should know, I've FIRED enough of them over the years!! What did you all think of that bit in the Daily Retard about the "21 ways to cure AIDS" book? They call their snippet an EXCLUSIVE, when the short fat bald one ran this story in last month's issue of ScotsGay! Exclusive, who are you trying to kid, David Thompson, Joan Burnie, Tom Brown et al?? Remember where you read it first! Anyone else reckon it would be a good idea if Sapphos were to open up in the afternoons and let the boyz in? OK, I'm biased cos it's a shame seeing their lovely pool table just sitting there beckoning "Pump my slot, sweetie!!". I know the girlies want a women only space, but it's not as if the place is already open in the afternoons, is it? And let's face it, it's not as though Sappho was totally dykey, as she did actually get married and have a wean! It's TRUE, she married Cercylas and had a daughter, Cleis!! Went down to Madge's farewell party. The place was the busiest I've seen it in ages, and it's a pity that it wasn't supported as much before. As Marf and Laura said, if the scene had regularly gone there in the numbers that they did on the last night, it would still be open. Great shame walking past the place on my way into town and seeing the shutters down. Wasn't going to say ANYTHING about the Poo Lounge in this month's issue in case I got accused of having it in for them, 'til I found they'd been advertising for staff in the straight press. It's bad enough having straights on one side of the bar, do we REALLY want them behind it as well? I like to think there's a chance of us copping off with the bar staff, seems like the pretty thing pouring your pint who's the object of your desire might be one of THEM! Minerva@drink.demon.co.uk INBHIR NIS ---------- Och it's yerselfs!! How are you doing? Come away in and make yourselves comfortable - DJ put the kettle on, we've got guests. Well how are you all?? Keeping well I hope? How's that wee red itchy part Agnes? Did you go to the doctor's with that?? Nothing serious I hope. It's so nice of ye all tae pop in and see yer Auld auntie in Inverness. A'huv loads of gossip for you all (DJ, where's the tea?). Well here we go, it would appear that on the general front this new column for the North has been well accepted on the whole, judging by the comments and snippets of news given to me. The news has been unofficially dubbed by a few of the more stylish queens up here as "Calum talks cock" on account of (allegedly) that I talk about little else!! Who, moi??? Speaking recently to the goddess of style at Reach Out Highland in Inverness, our very own Miss Flint (blush, curtsey), I was told that the organisation's 2nd birthday party is to be held soon. Tickets are ukp7 a head and available from Reach Out Highland's offices in Huntly Street, Inverness. The gang at Huntly St. always put 110% effort into these events and, if last year's 1st birthday party is anything to go by then this is one very definitely not to miss. Diaries out girls - contact Reach Out for further details. Other news, local man Brian Innes has been "Making his mind up" to get something arranged for the Eurovision Song Contest, has pulled a few "Puppets from a string" of ideas and wants to get a group together to do "Just a little bit more" than watch it. So if anyone is interested in getting a few bevvies, picking a country, bringing some food local to that country, possibly dressing in the country's national dress, coming together for a Euro song party (location undecided) and awarding their own points etc. for the songs whilst watching event the event on TV on 3rd May then contact Brian on 01463 237138. Recent visits to "Nico's" (am I allowed to say that word or will my cute arse be sued?? - My fat one remains totally unsullied by litigation. - Ed) have proved encouraging, with a healthy attendance and friendly atmosphere, plus the tourists are also starting to appear there having found out where we all hang out. A pre-Pride air of excitement is around with several groups starting to get ready to represent themselves on the day in Edinburgh. Very good to see - PPs all round. Just have to check this - how camp did butch Grant Mitchell look in theatre blues and frilly cap with tears running down his cheeks!! Himself and the cats went into a frenzy, but when I had my tonsils out recently, and was in much the same state ie. frilly cap, theatre gown, tears etc., Himself just laughed... the cow!!! Luv ya's, take care, come and visit Auntie again. CalMac xxx OBAIR DHEADHAIN --------------- Well hello, good evening, and welcome to another fun packed edition of... oh cut the crap! Alas, Doug - aka Littlebear couldn't stand the heat any longer and has since abandoned the kitchen! The trouble is, he forgot to take that souffle out of the oven, and I've been up to my elbows in Fairy trying to clean the dish! Ahem! Right, well, I'm Gus, and it looks like I'm going to be covering the Aberdeen scene. Quite how I managed to get the job, I have no idea... something to do with being in the wrong place at the wrong time! However, it will give me a much needed excuse to get into Aberdeen more often, so that cannot be bad! Anyway, I suppose I'd better get on with the job in hand (oh, that one has already been done!). I ventured down to Aberdeen last weekend, on my first "assignment", and ended up having a brilliant weekend. First stop was Castro, where I was introduced to The Management. It was quite early on in the evening, and there didn't seem to be much happening, although a quick look downstairs revealed a few more people - obviously enjoying themselves. I've only been in Castro a few times since it re-opened, but I am pleased to say that the refurbishment has indeed made a difference. The previous Pink Flamingo always seemed rather dark and forbidding, and while some people might have appreciated that, it was perhaps a little daunting for those who were slightly new to the scene. Having said that, the bar staff were friendly enough, and one or two of the clientele were more than friendly enough! So much so that I thought it was time for a sharp exit... It seems very much to be the place to go for a quick drink with your mates before heading down to the Cab', which is a shame really. Some nights Caberfeidh ends up being so packed you can't move. Again, it's fine for some, but when you've said "excuse me" and tried to squeeze through a million times, you get a wee bit more fed up, and rather less polite! Onto Caberfeidh I went. Again, it was quiet, but I assumed it was because the night was young. The trouble is, it never seemed to get that busy. I don't know whether it was because it was a Friday, and I usually go on a Saturday, or whether I was too drunk and simply can't remember. My nights out with Jack Daniels are usually pretty vague!! In an attempt to get some photographs, everyone suddenly became camera-shy. Bloody closet cases, the lot of you! Thankfully Jacqui, the boss and Elaine the DJ weren't so. Even the rest of the bar staff were too chicken! After a while I decided it was too quiet, and moved on. Now, it's not often that it can be said that I go to church, but when they convert them into nightclubs, I'm slightly more interested. Exodus was the next port of call. Having been once before, and enjoyed it, I thought I'd visit again and report on it. I'd heard rumours that it was a good place, and that it was always fairly mixed, but when I saw it advertised as a gay venue in this mag, and the Other One, I thought it was definitely worth another look. There is one thing I would like to point out, and that it is definitely a "mixed" crowd". I spoke to the duty manager, and she confirmed it. If you don't mind having a crowd of very open-minded straights in your midst, then this is the place to go. The music is excellent, although this can be expected from Alan and Maggie, who also do Joy in Edinburgh. If you like Joy, then you'll definitely like this place. Saturday night was almost as good as well, and it's not listed in any magazines. Having spoken to a few people, it would seem that Aberdeen has lost out to Dundee to a certain extent. In the past loads of people used to flock up from Dundee for a night out, but this situation seems to have been reversed somewhat. "Aberdeen's shite these days", I hear, but, hey, if you don't go out and support the Aberdeen scene then there is no doubt it will be. A good club has loads of bodies, and I'm sure there are more than enough in Aberdeen to make all the clubs packed. There are 219,000 people in Aberdeen. Lets say 5% of that figure (working on the conservative rule that 1 in 20 people are gay)... that's 10,950 gays and lesbians in Aberdeen. Even half of that figure is more than enough to make the place jump. Where the hell are they? Okay, it's nice to go away to a different place for a chance of scene, but when it's to the detriment of your local venues, come on folks. Erm... who put that soapbox there?!! Anyway, enough rambling. Hopefully I'll have a wee bit of gossip for the next issue, but I ain't making any promises!
