Inside you'll find details of the Pride march and festival, plus all the interesting venues, gossip from around the country and an amazing selection of personal ads in the Meet Market! ---------------------------------------------- PRIDE: Edinburgh - June 21st This year's Pride Scotland will almost certainly be the biggest ever. Setting off from East London Street (not, as the geographically challenged Gay Times would have it, Glasgow's Blythswood Square!) at 11.30am, the Pride Scotland March (more a gentle stroll, really) will wend its way up Broughton Street, along Princes Street, up The Mound, across George IV Bridge and along Middle Meadow Walk before finishing up in the Meadows where the Pride Scotland Festival will continue all day. It's the biggest lesbigay event to hit Scotland: more trade than you can shake a box of condoms at and all in one place too. Or, if having an enjoyable day out amongst past, present and future friends doesn't appeal, you can always join in as a political statement! Bring your friends (gay, straight, bisexual, undecided, celibate), your relatives, your companion animals, even (if you must) your squalling infants! But most of all, bring yourself! Christian groups who have been praying for rain to ruin the day will have been joined by gay atheist group Edinburgh Freethinkers doing exactly the same (on the basis that superstitious nonsense like praying doesn't work anyway) and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will be singing "It's raining men". The March: Assemble in East London Street from 11am. The march will be lead by women drummers band Commotion, and the rest of the march will assemble behind them. Pride Scotland stewards (red T-shirts) will co-ordinate things and answer your questions. Pride Scotland collectors (yellow T-shirts) will be selling whistles. The Road To Hell: is paved with flat cobbles and there is also a flat pavement. Behind the drummers at the front of the march is the access section for wheelchair users and others, which will limit the marching pace. Stewards can direct you to it. Immediately behind the access section will be a women's section. At the front of the assembly area (near Broughton Street) will be a BSL interpreter (red T-shirt/green sash). The March: moves off at 11.30am. It's just over 1 1/2 miles and should take an hour and a quarter. First Aid: The Red Cross will be present. If you need help, wait by the side of the march and ask a steward (red T-shirts). Shush!: We pass the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary at the end of the march. Stewards with signs will ask for quiet here. Please don't whistle or shout then until we reach the Meadows itself. Access Information: The march is on a smooth tarmaced surface. There are two fairly steep upward hills: Broughton Street and Leith Street at the start and The Mound at the half-way point. There is a gentle downward hill at the end (Middle Meadow Walk). There is a wheelchair-access toilet en-route and at the Festival site. At the rear of the March will be a wheelchair-access minibus for the use of anyone who needs it for all or part of the March. A BSL interpreter (red T-shirt/green sash) will travel in the minibus. At the foot of The Mound there will be two wheelchairs, with helpers to push them, for anyone who requires help for The Mound or the rest of the March. At St Giles Street, by the Bank of Scotland, is the stewarded Alternative Access Point. From this point on, the route is almost flat. The March will reach this point at about Noon. On arrival at the Festival site, entertainment will be provided by: Mary Kiani, Lorna Brooks, Labi Siffre, Well Oiled Sisters, Cicero, Q-Tex, Regina Fong, Joshua, Hufty, Chloe Poems, Sassy Stryker, Karen Dunbar, The Camp Vamps, Brendan Nash, X-avia, Glasgow Gay Men's Chorus, Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, plus surprise guests! To offer help as a Steward or Collector, telephone 0131-556 8822 or e-mail pridescotland@drink.demon.co.uk. Visit Pride Scotland's Web Site (sponsored by ScotsGay) at http://www.scotsgay.co.uk/pride/ --------------------------------------------- Equality For All Conference Friday 20th June, Edinburgh City Chambers (Pride Scotland satellite event) A major national conference on equality issues. For all lesbian, gay, bisexual and trangender groups, organisations and individuals in Scotland. Aim: to develop priorities, plans and contacts for working towards equality. Organised by the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Equality Network, with the support of Stonewall and the STUC. Full details and pre- and post-conference info from: LGB Equality Network, 58a Broughton St., Edinburgh, EH1 3SA, from Pride Scotland on 0131-556 8822 or e-mail tmh@dcs.ed.ac.uk ------------------------------------ DUN-DEAGH (Dundee) It's been all go in Dundee this past wee while with special events adding a new dimension to the scene. Body Positive held a disco at the Seagate Gallery, less ambitious than last year, it was still well attended. The wimmin's drumming group have been heard outside the Wellgate Centre startling the average Dundonian. The wimmin's disco at Sinatras takes a break in July but returns monthly on Fridays after that - it's quite busy at times and 30 or 40 head on to Liberty at midnight. Karaoke has been run recently at Devas by the DJ Jan who many will recall DJ'd at Club Cruise just before it shut down. Planning permission was advertised for a new bar behind Liberty Nightclub so perhaps the rumour is fact. A name is being looked for and the hunt is providing some amusing but unsuitable suggestions! Liberty Nightclub is now open for 5 nights a week and since opening Wednesdays with Karaoke and Strippers over 40 people have been persuaded to attend. Recently the club throbbed with foam covered dancers at the Ibiza Foam Party and boy band Awesome. Fri 4th July sees a bucking bronco to help celebrate America's Independence Day. I'd rather have free Budweiser but I doubt if Brian, owner of Liberty, will give anything away - especially now he has a new man! Variety is the spice of life and Liberty is attracting fresh meat from Aberdeen and Edinburgh and as I've had all that's worthwhile on the Dundee scene the influx is most welcome! Tayside Police have been enjoying the good weather down at Riverside, the well-known cruising area. Choosing to ignore crime, theft and burglary they appear to be focusing their 'limited' resources on men who like men. Not content with catching men having sex with men - bloody easy down there - they are noting car registration numbers and visiting owners' houses. Careers and relationships may be in jeopardy. Gay men should be cautious that the Police are willing to ruin lives to bolster their statistics. Policemen can be found off duty at Riverside doing what on duty policemen are targeting - a fact the Chief Constable was made aware of at a meeting with Dundee's well-known Ma Boyle. The boys in blue also alerted the manageress of a straight City Centre bar that "two dykes and one poof" worked behind her bar. Hats off to the manageress who told them she knew the dykes and they were the best barstaff ever and that the 'poof' had a wife and kids at home and was merely a touch camp. Informed sources tell me nobody has shagged him. Perhaps the Police 'informed sources' should get their facts correct! See you soon in the City of Discovery! Liquid Silk ---------------------------------------------------- DUN EIDEANN (Edinburgh) Hiol! A sad tale of Fear and Loathing in the Rue de Broughton this month, I'm afraid. In the beginning, there were the two German guys who had the cafe in the Lesbigay Centre. They were told that all planning matters were hunky dory. But they weren't! Former planning department employee and Centre founder Ian Dunn had cocked up. Exit Germans in search of lawyer. Cost to Centre to recompense them? A cool ukp17,000 or so. Enter Ian Dunn. Taking over the cafe premises, Ian intended to save the Centre and earn his livelihood by running Stonewall. But, despite immense improvements to the standard of food since he first opened up (no longer is the all day breakfast served with a side salad), Ian soon tired of the life of restauranteur and bon viveur and asked the Centre owners OUTRIGHT Scotland (of which he just happens to be Convenor) to flog off the building and blow the proceeds on lesbigay campaigning. A meeting of OUTRIGHT followed at which the group wisely decided to examine all the options open to them. Enter Paul 'Mrs Tubby Bear' Ivison who owns PJ's, the shop at the front of the Centre. He was not best pleased at the prospect of the Centre closing and his losing the ukp12,000 he borrowed to open the shop. He came along to a meeting of the LGB Project with the aim of getting elected as a Director. Re-enter Ian Dunn, bearing many Forms of Proxy. Mrs Tubby Bear found that his arithmetic had been defective and he failed to be elected - the ostensible reason being that a tenant should not be on the Board because of potential conflicts of interest. This didn't stop George, chief cook and bottle washer from Stonewall, from getting onto the Board though. And then, Clarke, from the Blue Moon, a competitor to Stonewall, got Ian Dunn's handful of proxies waved against him and he too failed to be elected. Exit Mrs T Bear in strop! I've tried to make light of a pretty shitty situation at the Centre. I suppose we should draw a veil over the ukp8,000 squandered on employing a professional fundraiser who designed some jolly good notepaper but raised sweet fuck all. The way in which things are run is certainly overcomplicated - it needs a flow chart to explain the interconnected bodies which have an interest in the place. Nevertheless, the new Directors, and new Chair Rob Nunn, the much respected campaigner with Rank Outsiders, are doing their best to ensure the viability of the place if OUTRIGHT does decide to keep it. And you can help too: a positive response to the survey which is being undertaken is essential - please fill in and return the forms that will soon be being passed around. Meanwhile, in another part of the forest (or at least a little bit further on from the bushes of London Road) the Terrace Bar has changed into the Stag and Turret and has become Edinburgh's latest faggot and dyke bar. Despite Gay Scotland getting their address wrong (it's actually in Montrose Terrace, just round the corner from the Solas Centre), the pub seems to be quite busy most days. The place is run by John Malcolm who has been putting on a complete range of entertainment for his punters which varies from Karaoke on Thursdays to Paulette DuBois on Sundays. The food menu seems quite reasonably priced, but then they're competing with the equally reasonably priced Solas Centre! Not content with evicting all the hetties from the Terrace, John has his eyes on the old Regent Buffet across the road which he wants to run as a dyke bar called Jinty's. Presumably he's been encouraged by the Saturday night women only sessions upstairs at the Stag and Turret. The locals won't be too pleased - they'll have to wander down to the Artisan which may do a decent pint of Real Ale, but isn't what I'd call gay friendly! Raymond Inverarity has re-opened his Bodytech Sauna in Haddington Place after a gap of what feels like several years. It's just up the road from No 18, but Raymond is quick to point out that he's offering a different sort of leisure experience which includes a complementary drink. Although the place is supposed to open at 1pm every day, Raymond warns that, if the weather is sunny, all his regulars are well aware that the doors will remain firmly shut until later in the afternoon! Up at the Commonwealth Pool Sauna, a sharp change in attitude has taken place with police and staff taking a sudden interest in what goes on. I hear that arrests have been made and include one which involves a 'pretty policeman'. It seems that all the Police Liaison work hasn't worked as well as it might. Whilst we all await with interest the opening of The Catwalk in what used to be Raymond's old pub Picardy's, just across the road has seen a silent revolution as Cafe Kudos has been sold off to a couple of straights. The new owners are Steve Jack (broadcaster with Radio Forth) and Councillor Steve Cardownie (who has closed down a good few cottages in his time due to lack of Council funding).. The only change so far has been the departure of Peter O'Neil and Steve Jack tells me that that is the only change which is likely to take place apart from a lick of paint. After all, why change a winning formula? OK, French Onions (That's Shallot)! See you all at Ride Scotland - well, that's what I'll be hoping to get! Iain Iain@drink.demon.co.uk ---------------------------------------------------------------- GLASCHU (Glasgow) THE M-FILES-THE TRUTH IS NOT HERE. Well, once again I've left things to the last minute, so this column is getting written up in a rush as usual. Writing this at 3am, in the hope I can get it to His Editorialness on time! I hope you lot appreciate what we columnists do to get the mag out on time!! (Dead easy really, we just stagger in pished from the pub, fire up the computer and Hey Presto,>> twenty fags, half a case of beer and two hours of Motorhead later, it's all ready for His Editorness to cut out all the juicy bits and correct my spelling!) So, how is life for all us fairies now, living under our supposedly wonderful New Labour government? Not much different really, is it now? So much for a change in the age of consent laws, anti-discrimination laws, cohabitation rights, parenting, allowing gays in the military etc. Nothing has changed has it? Is it likely to in the foreseeable future, don't hold your breath!! As for getting Clause 28 repealed, don't make me laugh!! We probably had as much chance of getting equal rights under the Tories. At least they had enough MPs with a vested interest, if you know what I mean! Anyway, on with the Scene stuff. I see my editor decided to print part of last month's column in 4 point type, cos I told him he could fit all my stuff on the page by making the print smaller. It's a start anyway, but it would appear that a certain editor from another mag was complaining that it was too small to read. We all know what makes you go blind now, don't we!! Probably explains why I've got 20/20 vision!!, (deaf as a bloody post, but hey, who's perfect?). Actually, I'm surprised that Hairy Hein can still read 4 point, after all the shagging she's been getting up to with her little 19 year old bit of trade. You're probably all aware by now that Atlantis is no longer operating as a gay-friendly Cafe-Bar, and is now a Pancake Place. Shame really, it was never truly a gay venue, but was a nice place to sit outside in the summer, and watch the talent go by. Pity there are no gay street cafes in Glasgow, now that summer is here. Talking of summer, nice to see lots more naked flesh in the pubs and clubs, as the boyz dig out their skimpy Lycra and tarty T shirts. Mind you, there are also some pretty horrendous sights going around too! Sorry girls, but if you're fat and ugly, best to keep that out of condition body well wrapped up! (You DO talk complete shite at times. Ed) Got an interesting E-mail last month from one of the news services in America. Apparently this woman is suing a pharmaceutical company after buying some contraceptive jelly, and still getting pregnant. Turns out she spread it on toast and ate it, thinking this would stop her getting up the duff! Ignorance about safe shagging never ceases to amaze me, but it would appear that this story is actually TRUE! Could only happen in the land of the free and bloody stupid! For those of you who want a cheap pint, but can't be bothered going from one pub to the next to catch the happy hours, why not just stay in the Waterloo. ukp1.50 a pint ALL the time, and the best selection of REAL men in Glasgow! OK, so if you're a screaming Janet, you might look a bit out of place, but why not dig out your butchest frock and give it a try for a change? One of the things I like about the Waterloo is that there is no working clock, so you're always guaranteed a stream of trade coming up asking if you've got the time, (Yes, if YOU'VE got the money!). Alright, so it's a crappy opening line, but it does the business, especially if you're young, cheap and single like me! Ooh err missus, another letter of complaint from Vacuous Gav about me! What makes DJs such primadonnas? - even I can synch a pair of 1210s after 10 pints of lager! Still, I suppose it gives her something to do during the long lonely hours playing to an empty dance floor. What was all that stuff about me being old because I've worked in a lot of pubs and clubs? Seem to remember our Gav reeling off a long list of places that she's worked in, so maybe she's older than me! The letter was a bit ironic really, if Gav thinks he's such a great DJ how come Club X have now decided to replace him with Annie on Saturday nights? The people have a right to know! I take exception to being called a bitchy queen by somebody who is just as bad, but doesn't like having it pointed out to them. Gav says he likes his new name, Hmm, will have to think of a new one. How about Tampax, cos they're both stuck up c*n*s! (Bet THAT one ends up on the cutting room floor!) (No - I think it's best that our readers get to know what sort of prude you really are - the word is cunts. Ed) An application for a change of licensee has been made for the old Gillespies building, so, with a bit of luck, we should have another disco before long. Various rumours going around just now about what will be happening, with the usual piles of crap being spouted by the gossip merchants. Club X currently seem to be having a bit of a lean time. Place is dead on Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday is still the BreederFest, and they've now decided to close on Thursday and Sunday. Still doing OK at the weekend from those who've left it too late to get into Bennets. Why not try dropping the entry charge at the weekend to drum up trade, and also to dispel all those nasty rumours that an entry price fixing agreement operates between certain clubs on Friday and Saturday? Tin Pan Alley continues to go from strength to strength, with the new Monday (Bounce) nights becoming increasingly popular. Tuesday (JoJos) continues as a handbag, HiNrg and chart night, whereas Monday is run as a club night with a harder, clubbier music policy. Entry is still a cheapo 2 quid on both nights, and the ukp1 drinkies will be continuing indefinitely. Pete Burns was due to be appearing, but after pissing DJ Stella about too much, he's been dropped, and our old favourite Hazel Dean will be appearing instead. The first time I saw Hazel was up north in a country disco. The audience consisted of a load of fairies and the local farmers who had never heard of her. The night was a scream, with the gay crowd shrieking their tits off, much to the amusement and bewilderment of the local yokels! It's a pity that some embittered queen saw fit to make a malicious call to Tin Pan's regarding the running of the gay nights, but a quick 1471 revealed that the offending call had in fact been made from another of the gay clubs, and no, it WASN'T from the payphone!! >>NAUGHTY!! Anyway, despite all this queeny subterfuge, the gay nights at Tin Pan's are doing very well, with further PAs due in the future. At least one of the bar staff has become the object of some of your affections, despite being straight (allegedly), and it's quite funny watching the girls lusting in vain! (we think). Hard to tell these days whether people are gay just by looking. Straight guys have adopted our poofy haircuts, Janety clothes etc cos they think it's trendy, while the gay scene have started dressing down. If you see someone who looks like a poof, but their fashion sense is about a year out of date, they're probably a breeder!! Overall, the future for the scene is looking very healthy, with the developments at the Poo, a possible re-opening of Gillespies and another club due to open in the near future. I'm sworn to secrecy on that last one, suffice to say that it's slap bang in the city centre. The Poo Club continue unabated in their quest for a sanitized, homogenised and dehumanised clientele. DJs Stella and Poppy, Gordon from Pulse, and now Betty Hutton have joined the list of those who have been barred. Is this a mission to rid the premises of all Glasgow's celebrities? If so, why do I still get in? Fortunately, they are all still welcomed by other pub and club owners who want a bit of LIFE in their venues. Why don't the Poo just bar everybody, and fill the place with nice safe boring cardboard cut out customers if they're worried about letting any real characters in? (What do you mean, they already have?). I could understand this sort of behaviour if the Poo was heaving and could afford to turn customers away, but let's face it, they aren't, and the celebs, and their fans and entourages are the last people they can risk losing. Anyway, if you want a place with a bit of atmosphere, and a FUN clientele, you know where NOT to go!! Well, that's all for now, til next month, EAT, DRINK AND BE MARY! Hugs kisses and all that drivel, LUV, MINERVA. minerva@drink.demon -------------------------------------------------- OBAIR DHEADHAIN (Aberdeen) Aye, aye, fit like? Here I am once more, writing about your favourite hotspots in Aberdeen! I was warned when I took on this job that it would be more difficult to write this column as time went on, and sure enough it's beginning to get that way!! I was approached by Elaine, Caberfeidh's DJ (in Castro of all places... nice to see there's not such an element of hatred between the two places any more) who asked me when I was going to write anything decent about the Aberdeen scene. Patience, patience, dear, that was only my first article. First of all, I'm usually quite an honest person, and I'll say so if something isn't to my taste, and secondly, until fairly recently I was getting really bored with the Aberdeen scene. However, I am not lying when I say that recently there has been somewhat of an improvement (In my view, anyway), and therefore I shall write accordingly!! The Trash Heap has spoken. Nyaahh. Well, I am pleased to report that the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence did their marathon nun-run and managed to raise nearly ukp400, which is to be split between Pride Scotland, and the Moray LGB Switchboard. I have been asked to thank everyone for their generosity. On a lighter note, I must refute all allegations that I was one of the nuns there... it was merely a figment of your imagination!!!! Ask Auntie Calmac... she'll tell you. Speaking of Nuns, they didn't turn up for the Surfing evening at the Cab', apparently due to transport problems, so I think Jacqui was a wee bit miffed, but she did tell me that it was an excellent night. Theme nights tend to work quite well, but only if the public support them, and that was always a problem in the past. People have to learn that the clubs won't spend money on special nights, PAs, etc, unless they can guarantee a return on their money. However, the Surfing night was so popular, there's another one coming up in July. One forthcoming attraction is the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race, which will be coming to Aberdeen very soon. This, coupled with the Youth Festival should bring a lot of visitors to the city, and if it was like the last time I saw the tall ships in '91 (god, I was only 17 then...), it should provide a lot of talent too! Jacqui tells me that she has applied for a 3am licence for that weekend, right through 'till the Tuesday, so fingers crossed. The Monday night opening will only go ahead if there is suitable response from the punters, and 1am curfew will have to be imposed, as in other cities. This may well pave the way for a permanent late licence, but it's all down to you folks there. If you don't support it, it won't happen. Caberfeidh still jumps at the weekends, although Fridays definitely don't seem to pick up until quite late on. Saturday night is still the best by far, and getting better too. Sunday nights seem to have a new DJ too. Not being there too often on a Sunday (it is the Sabbath, you know. Trying to get my new party frock hung out to dry is bad enough at any time, but on a Sunday??) I hadn't noticed before, but he is rather cute. Either that or I was drunk (well I had just spent a weekend with the nuns, what do you expect???!!) Anyway, this is not an advert for Caberfeidh, so moving on swiftly... Exodus was bouncing as ever. Word seems to be spreading further now, as I even bumped into one of the regulars of my local club in Elgin... hello!! Sweet! seems to be pulling in a slightly bigger gay crowd now, which was what I was moaning about the last time. People tend to go there more for the music etc. than anything else, as by the end of the night the bar area is generally empty and you can't move on the dance floor. If you like handbag and HiNRG then this is not your place, as hard house seems to be the order of the day. As I mentioned earlier, there are quite a number of straights there, but everyone seems quite happy to accept the queer crowd, and there are generally no problems with snogging your partner (or someone else's!!). By the way, Alan has released his Midsummer Mix, which is a double cassette affair, ukp5 each (per cassette I believe), featuring some of the happy choonz he playz. Available at the door in Exodus on the night. I am also usually available in the club on the night, but I cost a damn sight more than a fiver!! My sincerest apologies to my fans in Castro, as I didn't quite make it there. I was dragged out to a few straight places by an ex. Although Smart Alex contained lots of cute young students, nothing really registered on my Gaydar. Perhaps because I wanted to get out of there so much. Well, it's time I signed off. I hope you all have a lovely time and that you're all good little boys and girls. I'll be around at Pride Scotland so say hello if you see me. I'd like to say hello to Craig, who sent me an e-mail message. Even though our editor had to print it out, stick it in an envelope and post it to me!! Isn't this Internet thing wonderful? (It's even more wonderful when you're a student and don't have to pay for it... sigh) Anyone else who has any gossip or anything, do let me know!
