With Edinburgh's population doubling with fresh totties for the Festival, we list the interesting and the intrguing, as well as where to chill out between shows. Of course, we've also got gossip from everywhere else, plus the ubiquitous and salacious Meet Market ... In this Issue: Festive Edinburgh Scene News from: Dundee Edinburgh Glasgow Inverness Aberdeen Boxes - The ScotsGay Meet Market Venues ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FESTIVE EDINBURGH ================= It's August again, and time to rub shoulders and other parts with all (or even a few) of the assorted celebrities, tourists and journalists who swarm around the honeypot of Kulchur that is Edinburgh during the Festival Season. The next issue of ScotsGay comes out during the Festival, and our review team will be telling you what they think of a few of the shows. In the meantime, John Hein, still vaguely keen after 20 years festival going, casts a few nasturtiums at that which is to be on .... Well, where can I start? At the Festival proper, I suppose. Mark Morris seems one of the fixtures of the Festival - but this year, he's doing something a bit different: a production of Rameau's Platˇe. His dance group appears with the Royal Opera Chorus in an opera with a pantomime plot but rather super tunes. Tharp! consists of new dance works by Twyla Tharp and one of these, Heroes, has a score by Philip Glass which will certainly attract the boyfriend if nothing else! East Palace, West Palace (Dong Gong, Xi Gong), written and directed by Zhang Yuan is a stunning piece of theatre which has also been made into a film. Both forms of the work are on offer (in Mandarin with sub/supertitles), with the UK Premiere occurring as part of the Film Festival. Story: Young gay man gets lifted in a Peking cottage by a closet gay cop and the pair spend the night discussing the matter. Other films of queer interest? Alan Berliner's Ma Vie en Rose, which is the Film Festival's Opening Gala, seems more TV/TS than LGB - concerning a seven year old boy who is convinced that he should be a girl. The International Premiere of Victor Mignatti's Broadway Damage is billed as 'The first gay movie for all the family'. This romantic comedy has two rather cute protagonists, but other than that, I know not. Dakan (Destiny) is one of the first films from Africa to broach the subject of homosexuality with its tale of two young men in love who boldly come out to their parents. Chasing Amy is said to take on the confusions of sexuality and sexual attractions in the 1990s - it tells of the het man who falls for the gay gal. Then, mustn't forget Stephen Fry in Wilde. If you fancy a bit of beefcake, Peter Cataneo's The Full Monty follows the fortunes of a group of unemployed steel workers who form "Chippendales" style troupe. And, if you fancy road movies and are a fairly sick puppy, I suppose that David Cronenberg's Crash may appeal. Personally, I'm looking forward to the retrospective on Len Lye - no idea about his sexuality, but he produced some very innovative animation with very lo-tech methods. Lots of comedy goodies on at the Fringe this year. Chloe Poems is back in Universal Rentboy: a controversial work which challenges the world as commodity and ends up saving the planet as we know it. Bea Love at Midnight (our front cover shot) is a lavish, glaring and glittering musical cabaret starring the waspish and glass shattering Bea Love, trilling her clipped, bitter sweet lyrics. Scott Capurro (Julian Clary with barbs) is back for his third? year on the Fringe and still doesn't put up with any bullshit. It's Bob Downe's tenth year in Edinburgh and the smile shows no sign of tarnishing unlike the wig which has seen better days. Kit and the Widow make a welcome return after missing for a year or so - high class smut. Unlike the low class smut of Donna McPhail at the Gilded Balloon. If you like music with your comedy, don't miss L'Ultima Recital: a large woman with a voice to match, I laughed so hard that the tears ran down my leg! If you like comedians with attractive bodies, then Ed Byrne's show Psychobabble is a must - or at least the topless ad for it in the Fringe programme. And if you like front cover material, there's always Graham Norton who graces the current Gay Times and will be at the Assembly Rooms with his camp ramblings. What can one say about Earl Okin that hasn't been said before? A man who once played with the Beatles and now plays with himself in two shows. A living leg end in his time - even though he's straight. Don't miss his annual performance at the Fringe AGM where he tells everybody what's wrong with the Fringe. The Fabulous Fourmel'dyhides are a group of American leathermen who sing American hits of the 50's and 60's in a cappella style. Whilst Labi Siffre seems to have enjoyed Pride Scotland so much that he's doing a few days at the Gilded Balloon. And Paul Capsis - the Aussie with the voice and the pants Returns in Cabaret. If you like Philip Glass, Zadok The Priest at Old St Paul's is probably worth a go. And Philomusica has a wealth of queer talent in their extensive programme of classical music at three venues. Gilbert and Sullivan Go Wilde (Bunbury & Co) combines the music of G&S with Oscar Wilde's humour - good stuff! Benjamin Britten's Rape of Lucretia is being performed by Young Opera - probably worth a hearing. As a total contrast, Margarita Pracatan shows no musical aptitude whatsoever but with great style and panache at The Palladium in Broughton Place. I suppose this is the place to mention The Summer of Love Dance Party which will be held at the Ross Bandstand in Princes Street Gardens on 24th August from 1pm as a benefit for Waverley Care. Seven hours of non-stop loud popular noise from Edinburgh's top dance clubs. The BritCom Benefit on 20th August in the Assembly Rooms is in aid of Crusaid Scotland and features a lineup of comedy acts that are sure to please. On to theatre now, lots of it too! So, only space to pick out a few shows that may be worth a visit. Shadowboxing is a one man play about a boxer confronting his masculinity. David Benson reprises his Fringe First winning role as Kenneth Williams in Think No Evil Of Us. The Broken Dream Theatre Company have two plays: A Question of Attribution (by Allan Bennet) which involves Sir Anthony Blunt, and Mr Wilde & The Virgin which is a provocative tale of Oscar Wilde, the Virgin Mary, moving statues and Ballydrum-shamboo. The Daedalus Theatre Company present Auden and Isherwood's The Ascent of F6 - a mystical journey encompassing tragedy, comedy, live music and some of Auden's best poetry. At the Demarco European Art Foundation, In Yer Face is a collection of three pieces by Fife youngsters one of which touches on AIDS/HIV. The Cheviot, The Stag And The Black, Black Oil, being performed by the Eclipse Theatre Company is a strong piece which melds ceilidh culture and theatre into something which rises above agitprop in its descriptions of the rape of Scotland through the ages. Gay playwright Terrence McNally has Festival Theatre USC-USA perform his most important work to date: A Perfect Ganesh. It links cancer AIDS, love, spirituality, India and gayness in a moving, funny and life assertive play. The Gilded Balloon has several gay shows: Jonathan Hall 's 1996 Fringe First winner Behind The Aquarium At The Last Pizza Show returns and is well worth a visit (as we said last year: "This is the sort of quality production that makes the Fringe worthwhile."), whilst Lorenzo Mele (Starving Artists director) has Soldier On A Monday which involves two lovers getting into uniform fetish as a coping mechanism. Then there's Unidentified Human Remains And The True Nature of Love by Brad Fraser which is set against a culture of promiscuity and violence. Oh, goody! Desperate Lines is a first play by Peter Steadman which deals with two guys making contact through telephone dating. And Tales From A Traveller from Les Enfants Terribles is about a man who has to decide about living or dying on his 500th birthday - a question raised by the AIDS of its author, the Dutchman Erwin Kokkelkoren.. Shopping and F***ing (or Sh**p*ng and Fucking if you prefer) is Mark Ravenhill's blackly humorous moral fable which pitches a group of twentysomethings into a world of cheap sex, fast food and designer drugs. It's on at the Assembly Rooms where the tickets, unlike the sex, don't come cheap. At the Pleasance, Latin! by Stephen Fry is a spanking comedy about prep school which pulls no punches anent the wooftery goings on. At C, Feel Real - A Play About Frotting Reality by Alex Evans has a couple of gay lovers trying to escape reality. At Marco's, Christmas in July, from the Yes & No Theatre Company asks: Why does lust always get stuck in the throat? The Traverse has its usual gay content with the return of Starving Artists who present the World Premiere of their Earthquake Weather - an exploration of love and danger by Godfrey Hamilton. Also worth a look is Discopigs, an energetic sprint through two days in the lives of two extraordinary teenagers. There's also a fair amount of Lorca, more Wilde than you can shake an epigram at, but absolutely no Orton or Equus. Gay Men's Health will be making an exhibition of themselves at 10a Union Street on the theme "Accepting and celebrating alternative lifestyles". The range of work includes ceramics, animation, photography, paintings and some celebrity contributions. If you get tired of it all, a good place to hole up is the Caledonian Beer Festival at the brewery itself. Sample Russell Sharp's award winning ales along with live music from ceilidh to jazz and blues. As the saintly brewer once told me: "If you can cook a good curry, you can brew a decent pint". ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DUNDEE ====== Hot news from Dundee - well there's none really! Pubs and clubs have late licences due to the holidays. I can normally manage to get rolling drunk without them but to 3.30am does let me meet the milkman on my way home. Next late licences are in October so make your bookings for alcoholic anonymous now. Obviously last month's column, when I commented on the profitable pool table at Deva's, was read at Liberty Nightclub. For it came to pass that they have one now on the second dance floor. Dancing queens don't panic - the pool table is moved aside on Fridays and Saturdays. In fact last weekend it appeared to be getting used as a bed! Wimmin's Disco returns after the summer break to Sinatra's, Friday 8th August, and the nearest Friday to that in September. These nights are very busy and good atmosphere can be found. The diehards normally stagger round to Liberty Nightclub for even more bevvy! Deva's was busier over the Dundee fortnight and not just at night. The boyz and wimmin holidaying at home have kept the tills jingling. Riverside cruising area has been a little quieter. Apparently one of the community phoned Tayside Police to check my stories of surveillance, the Polis confirmed they were monitoring the goings on after a complaint by residents. Some particular gay men are down there that often I'm sure they too could be classed as residents. Liberty Nightclub has also been busy, even on the supposedly quieter nights the numbers have doubled. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 11pm the new DJ Pat is going down well with her fellow wimmin as well as the boyz. She can be found on the decks Fridays and DJ 'BP' (he from Pride) on Saturdays. Libs management, well Colin's gone so its only Brian just know, are working on the autumnal entertainment schedule of comedy, drag and dancers with regular karaoke, drinks promos (cheaper I hope) and bingo/quiz night (oh God!). They couldn't give me dates or details so I suppose that means nothing has been booked. The plans for a new cafe bar in St Andrews Lane are plodding their way through the officialdom but its still going to happen. Rumours abound that another gay disco is to open and the competition could be a good thing but the fact is no applications have been received by the City Council. I'd rather deal in fact and so should Miss Andrea Malone who has been talking of opening a gay disco in Dundee for almost 10 years. But rumours are often more interesting! See you soon in the City of discovery! Liquid Silk. -------------------------------------------------------------------- EDINBURGH ========= Well, the fear and loathing in Broughton Street seems to be evaporating with the decision of OUTRIGHT Scotland to sell off the LGB Centre to the Charity which currently runs the place. This will allow OUTRIGHT to pay off debts and still have a few bob to spare for campaigning. However, with equality legislation specifically excluded from the Devolution proposals, it seems that lobbying in London will have to continue. Broughton Street may have a very special visitor in the near future. Nelson Mandela is to be invited to drop into the LGB Centre during the big Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Edinburgh later this year. South Africa is the only country in the world to have specific provision for us in its Constitution. Even if Mandela can't come (there are doubts about his health and ability to travel to Edinburgh), it's hoped that the South African Government will be able to send a representative on his behalf. I was sorry to hear of the death in a car accident of 19 year old Steven Wylie. Steven edited Rainbow Trout and was heavily involved with the Stonewall Youth Group. He also appeared in the recent C4 film Highlanders Too (having skived off work for the afternoon). Director Stuart Brown told me, "Everyone on the crew was impressed by his confidence, maturity and professionalism. I think, everyone who knew him just assumed that he would go very far in life." Our thoughts are with his lover David who is pictured (below) at Pride Scotland with Steven - where they just looked so bloody happy together! I note that CC Blooms, following their successful third birthday party with Lizzie Drip, have a special Festival line up on 18th August with Blue House and Baba Yaga. And Route 66 have Gallus appearing on 31st August. Most of the pubs and clubs will be doing something special for the Festival - just keep your eyes open for flyers. Following the departure of Stevie McLean from Flames, it seems that the Morrison Street eaterie is no longer particularly gay friendly. We've had several complaints from guys who've been told off for holding hands. So, now you know where not to bother spending your hard earned cash! Raymond Inverarity at BodyTech has done the unexpected once again. Michael, his Sauna manager, tells me that they've turned the place straight and are sending any gay guys who turn up down to No 18. El Raymondo turning away trade? Whatever next! I see that Gay Scotland has finally fixed its listings for Alloa after my comments last month. Its Editor, Dominic d'Angelo has also resigned and the mag is suspending publication for a month or so before possible re-launch as a web-offset tabloid. With its print run down to well under 2,000 (and a probable circulation of half that) something had to give before the advertisers rumbled what was going on.. Paul "Mrs Tubby Bear" Ivison seems to fancy his chances as the new Heid Bummer and is moving back to Edinburgh - but not to partake of more beer shampoos. You really shouldn't drink on the job, Paul - stick to tea like the professionals! Iain Iain@drink.demon.co.uk ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GLASGOW ======= Fit like people!! Time for yet another mad rush to get this month's column written on time! Well, what news and gossip do we have for you this edition? Hmm, not a lot really, think it's that time of the year when all the venue owners go on holiday, so there's not much to report regarding new clubs etc. His Editorness has asked me to keep things a bit shorter this month. Yeah right! It's her age you know, she just can't cope with the trays of REALLY SMALL letters that she has to use to cram all my stuff into one page any more! The bars and clubs are as busy as ever, with quite a few exotic tourists to liven things up, but the scene seems a bit short on promos and PAs at the moment, which should get back to normal towards the end of summer. Apart from that it's business as usual, and the guest spots by soap opera walk ons should return to clubland shortly! Last month saw the arrival of new DJ Greg at the Waterloo. If you want to go out for a quiet sherry on Friday nights, try somewhere else! This guy is BIG, and has a stage presence to match! The atmosphere in the place is great, the punters get slagged to fuck, the music is good, and everybody has a wonderful time. Watch out Ms Hutton, you're no longer the only one who can tear the audience to shreds and get away with it! Can't say much for his taste in drag though, the outrageous yellow frock is definitely over the top! If you want a really good laugh, get down there on Friday nights, but if you get embarrassed easily, don't stand too near the DJ podium, as you're liable to get the piss taken out of you! This really is the sort of TACKY entertainment which we luv so much! Forget so called class acts, you can't beat good old fashioned tasteless smut to keep the pubs jumping! Keep up the good work mate, cos you've gone down really well on all the nights that I've been there!! A little joke I got in my E-mail from across the Atlantic: What do you call a queer dinosaur? MEGASOREASS!! Well, I thought it was funny!! One date to remember to put in all your Filofaxes is the 18th of August, when Dead or Alive and Cataleptic Pete will be playing on the Renfrew Ferry. Tickets are 10 quid, and are available from the pubs. Should be a sell out night, as most of the scene will be going. Can't think why though, DOA was a fabby 80s act, but that was a LONG time ago! They've not been heard of much since, so hopefully this will be a bit of a comeback, and not just playing on a historic, but admittedly legendary reputation! Still not had time to get details on up and cumming events at Centurion, which I said I would last month. (Slap my wristies!!). I promise to get all your news in next month's column guys!!, Sorry!! For those of you who like staying up late, but don't like crowded discos, why not check out the weekend all nighters? Might even get my own scrawny little body down sometime! The GLC are now asking people to sign in and out, so I was quite surprised not to see the book looking like a dirty weekend hotel register with pages of Mr and Ms Smiths signing themselves in. Don't know what the reason for the register is, but I hope it doesn't put people off using what is after all a vital part of our community. The GLC office seems to have moved into the unoccupied shop, hopefully this is only temporary until another paying tenant can be found. Anybody else think it was funny reading G2 magazine's attempt to slag off Pulse recently? At least Pulse is still in print. Can the same thing be said of G2? There are really only two Scottish based magazines with a decent circulation, and the only size that matters is that of the print run!! SCOOP!!! Versace have just announced their Autumn fashion collection. Seems like Kevlar is now the in fabric for frocks for the rich and famous! Stella from Bounce and JoJos has just announced that these two popular gay nights are to move to the stunningly luxurious Apartment Club in Royal Exchange Square (next door to the old Club X). DJ Stella was unhappy at Tin Pan Alley not fulfilling their promise to put on big name PA's etc and has decided to move the nights to the plush, normally straight, venue who promise a major PA on a monthly basis. This will serve Bennets and the now defunct Club X right for being so petty as to bar Stella from flyering their venues. Let's face it, there's nowhere else to go on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the scene are going to do their pre-club drinking in the bars where they CAN pick up flyers!!, a fact obviously NOT overlooked by Squires, Austins and the Waterloo!! Talking of Mondays, these are really starting to kick off at Bounce, with the place getting quite busy from midnight onwards. OK, so summer's here, and that means CRUISING!! Yes, what better way to spend a nice sunny Sunday afternoon than getting out the skimpy shorts and slutty T-shirts, and getting off down to Kelvingrove Park!! Been quite busy down by the river recently, just ignore all the nerdy students sitting on the grass swotting up their quantum physics. What are they doing there at this time of year anyway, or is this some sort of incognito cruising ritual that us naive queens don't know about? Anybody else as baffled as I am by all the crap in the tabloid press about the government lowering the age of consent for poofternookie and raising the age for buying ciggies? I thought some of the cartoons about young fairies not being allowed to have the customary postshagfag were quite funny, but doesn't it get right up yer nose when the trash-media make an issue of the government banning something bad for you, and legalising something which isn't? If you want to know what's happening on the gay scene, don't bother to read the recent Glasgow scene write up in Boyz! Who writes this crap anyway? According to them, the eagerly awaited Cafe Latte "opened just a few weeks ago" and is "serving tasty delights". Well, scuse me Boyz, but last time I looked, the place was still being fitted out, the builders were still in, and there was a bloody great wheel barrow sitting in the doorway. (You obviously haven't looked recently. Ed) And how come they know what's on the menu? Is there something that Mystic Meg and Egon Ronay haven't told me? Hopefully, they WILL be serving "tasty delights" once the place opens, just don't slap a plate of dead animal down in front of ME and expect me to pass rave reviews! Boyz also suggested you might want to avoid Wednesdays at Club X. Personally, I'd avoid the place seven days a week, cos I don't like drinking in places that closed down weeks ago!! Oh, and for all you Boyz readers out there, Bennets IS open on Sundays!! Can't help but get the impresh that this was written by somebody who'd never made it north of the border! Get it right next time!! Finally, what is happening up in Dod'n'Bunty land? I know the scene is a bit quieter than down here, but it seems like everywhere I go in Glasgow just now, I keep bumping into old faces down from Aberdeen for a bit of drunken debauchery! Well, that's this month's load of bollocks finally committed to print, so by the time His Most Wondrous Editorialness has finally chopped chunx out of it, it won't look too much like the Typesetting Hit Squad from Readers Digest have been on Media Manoeuvres. (Think I spelled that wrong (Yup! Ed.), but you know what I mean). Anyway, as Betty Hutton sez, see you all soon, when we'll be back with a class new act, new costumes, etc, etc LUV, MINERVA. minerva@drink.demon ----------------------------------------------------------------- INVERNESS ========= Hellfire and damnation is one of the thoughts that ran through my mind when I read the Hidden Highlands II article in the last issue of this mag. If I may quote "so called local groups", "It all seems so closeted", "Broken pinkies and cups of pink gin" (it's pints of gin actually), "sniping and gossip" (in evidence on any scene), "serves to alienate". What is this guy on?? If it was not for these "so called local groups" (one of which I helped found) then there is a very good chance I would be 6 ft under or in the local mental hospital. Not to mention the countless others they have helped for example. What really does serve to alienate is hysterical ignorant rabbeting on by someone who has either listened and believed gossip or who has not given anyone or anything a chance. Yeah I know life isn't gay heaven up here, but it is survivable and with common sense you can actually be quite happy and safe. You can be out and proud in a sensible way i.e. don't go screaming "I'm a queen, look at my stilettoes in Kyle of Lochalsh on a Saturday night!! I don't know all the details but from what I can make out so far I'm not surprised the writer had a bad time over West. Anyway I refuse to waste any more space here, but if you want a reaction, well there's one for starters. I personally am going to wait until the next mag before I go on, because at this time I'm too pissed off to give a reasonable good natured response, and what about this column? I may talk shite but at least it is written about gay life up here, for gay life up here. Now there is a positive feeling!! Stand by friends, that's all I can say. Right, hello readers, sorry for taking up your time with that. Well did you all see Highlanders Too on Channel 4? Not bad but I'm biased, I was on it, but, heh, it would have been good without me to! It gave a fair view of life up here and experiences. I was amused to hear about the trapping in Drumnadrochit. I grew up there and I never managed a shag... Bitch!! But despite many factors, I do believe it's not too bad up here, it really is what you make of it. Stuart obviously listened to what we said and produced a thoughtful and tactful programme and I believe made many good friend whilst doing so. Come back and visit soon Stuart. What's gay life like in the lowlands i.e. Dumfries and Galloway and Borders? It would be interesting to read... Any takers readers? Scene is quite up here just now, unusual that in the summer, however if the Moray gang get their act together and send me copies of their Gayzette I keep getting promised then I can write about their adventures coz I know they have loads of great times. Speaking of getting sent things - still no e-mails!! Hint! Hint! Nico's is still a busy place to be on a Wednesday with 20 folk in there tonight. There may be another venue on the cards, but it still has to be checked out, but watch this space. I will as soon as my work permits be making an appointment to see the owner (to those who know me, I know I keep saying that but I will get around to it honest!!). Anyway Little Miss Thing, her editorialness will be doing her nut as I've probably ran over my space so I'll sign off. By the way the article by Heather White in last issue was a balanced and fair view of life in the West (granted South West - I used to stay in Prestwick so I've experienced small Ayrshire towns). However her article did contain hope and was optimistic of a better future, you cannot fail to be a winner Heather, I wish certain others had your level head, wisdom and vision. Anyway take care, kisses to Liquid, Iain, Gussy Wussy and Minerva and... You. CalMac, calmac@drink.demon.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ABERDEEN ======== A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...Greetings, earthlings, fit like? Well, here I am again, tapping away at this large lump of prehistoric technology. It doesn't seem so long since I was penning my last column, but I'm doing this well in anticipation of copy deadlines being brought forward. I empathise with poor Minerva on that subject.! Well, due to my financial situation having hit rock bottom (again), and not being on holiday any more, I alas haven't made it through to the Granite City as often as I would have liked. However, on my last couple of visits I did rather have a good time. The Tall Ships Race came and went, and I kicked myself when I couldn't make it. Having seen television pictures of all these gorgeous blond haired eastern european seamen (Helloooo sailor!), I'm sorry I missed it now. Jacqui at Caberfeidh did tell me they had a good night with their surf machine once more, and that she was quite pleased with the response. Don't get complacent though folks, this place still needs a significant surge in the numbers during the week and especially on a Friday! Talking of Fridays, Sweet! has had somewhat disappointing numbers in the last few weeks. My last visit was a few weeks ago, and although it was fairly busy, the crowd didn't seem to be as up for it as they normally would be. I did meet this rather gorgeous guy, who invited me back to a party, and on further examination I found out he was STRAIGHT!!! Bummer - or lack thereof. Perhaps if I hadn't drunk so much that night I would have been able to judge it better!! I actually got a chance to talk to some more of the straight crowd, and find out whether or not they minded us queer boyz and girlz being there, and basically none of them could really give a monkeys, which is an excellent sign. My most frequent response was "oh, are you gay? Cool..." or words to that effect! I think with the aftermath of the Pride events and T in the Park, people haven't really had a lot of cash and have been staying in instead, which is a shame. To drive all the way up from Edinburgh to play to a dwindled crowd must be a little bit disappointing to say the least. Castro was fairly busy on my last trip too. Alas I couldn't get downstairs 'cos there was a private function on, but the music sounded quite good. Upstairs was pretty busy too, and it was a younger crowd too. Okay, there were a couple of older gits there too... see you in Joanna's in Elgin next weekend? You know who you are!! Right, well I suppose I'd better sign off here before I exceed my allocated space. Oh, can I just say a special hello to Betty, the Cab's most glamourous bar person. Be good.
