Winter is upon us, my friends, and I hope you've all queued up and got your Hogmanay tickets because, as of half an hour ago, they'd all been allocated! It's been a month of openings what with Mark McLeod's new Clouds Acommodation Agency opening up in Forth Street - he tells me that it's 'a dating agency for accommodation'. Then, of course there was Healthy Gay Scotland (what an unfortunate name - I can't get this image of Paul Ivison's unwanted piles out of my mind) a government funded HIV/AIDS campaign for gay men which kicked off with a bash in the Edinburgh International Conference Centre for invited guests and the press. They've got a budget of UKP138K and are spending some of this on poster sites throughout Scotland as well as a rather good booklet (which wasn't available at the launch in case the straight press thought it was a bit too explicit!). Their web site is certainly worth looking at (http://www.hgscotland.org.uk/) and I think that it will make a lot more impact than they realise - you can order free condoms online! There are a number of criticisms of the focus of their campaign, but the folk behind it will learn as they go along and let's hope that the budget (from the Scottish Office) holds out. I did notice that lots of people were smoking at the launch - hardly very Healthy! One chap who was looking a bit nervous was the Chinese guy who appears in the posters. Apparently, he isn't out at his workplace which just happens to be bang next door to one of the Edinburgh poster sites! That, my dear, is coming out with a bang!! Another opening which has yet to take place, is the new shop Out Of The Blue which is opening up on 1st December under the Blue Moon. Clark was telling me that he's really looking forward to the new emporium which will, he informs me, be the best in town! Also on 1st December is World AIDS Day and the pubs are pulling out the usual stops to mark the event. Lady Samantha is tottering down to the New Town for some light entertainment before heading back up to Frenchies where she'll be rounding off the evening with karaoke. Meanwhile, Gary at Route 69 tells me that he's got Total Recall booked for the evening as well as a big raffle. Bent 100% is having a rest before moving its monthly mayhem to the Shooting Gallery in Broughton Street and will be having a massive relaunch on Saturday 21st February - a date for your diaries - with Maggie Joy and Trendy Wendy playing the best in uplifting house. Joy To The World is JOY's Christmas bash on December 13th - so dress appropriately. It features guest DJ Vikki Red (Queen Maxine's DJing partner from Kitty Lips, London). Sally Findlay will be playing her School Disco tracks in the backroom at every JOY, slipping between Trendy Wendy. After only two dates she has already been featured in DJ magazine and made lots of more-established DJs green with envy. At Hogmanay, Joy and Luvely are teaming up for a spectacular New Years Eve bonanza at Wilkie House. The night will feature resident DJs from both clubs and will run a mammoth eight hours from 9pm - 5am. Tickets will be UKP15 members / UKP18 non-members. They will be very limited so buy them early to guarantee entry. Iain Iain@drink.demon.co.uk ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ DUNDEE ====== Highlight of this month's Dundee scene was the unannounced appearance at Libs of dance group "Stepps" who were very professional and clubbers who missed out at the Dundee venue could, a fortnight later, have caught them on Auntie Beeb's Children In Need Appeal. Apparently Libs have one or two more surprises up their sleeves which will just happen on the night. Part of their attempt to catch their new competitors off guard - I presume! The small disco Bibliotek has broken its promises already by failing to achieve two target opening dates. Whilst their opening night will not affect me, as their invite appears lost in the post, Andrea's hangers-on are keen to taste her free drinks promise which may make her quite busy initially but very poor! Any problems of sobriety or lack of shall be dealt with by bouncer in chief Joan McDermott as previously reported by this column. The approach to McDade Bouncing Incorporated may provide the muscle if not the tact required. Recently DJs Stella from Glasgow, Pat from Dundee and some other gay scene notables have been offered jobs. They say they refused so that leaves only two dozen who claim to be starting work at the Paradiso venture. Great night had at the West Port Bar recently for Joe's 40th birthday (surely 30? darling). Queens, hetties and a spattering of dykes all partied together and the party continued at Liberty where pictures of Joe sporting an Afro hairstyle at age 21, adorned the walls. Down by the Riverside, the local cruising area, residents are up in arms that the view made famous by city artist McIntosh Patrick is to be blocked out by the building of a new hotel. Last issue I told you of these guys test drilling at the site. The City Fathers in their wisdom feel a hotel is more suitable and necessary than a gay cruising area and demand for hotel rooms is high. Personally I believe a cruising area adds dimensions to Dundee and I haven't noticed so many visitors to Deva's and Liberty that another hotel should be built to house them - I mean, we already have the Queen's Hotel! World AIDS Day may have passed by the time you read this. Dundee Outreach Team, Harm Reduction Centre and Liberty have teamed up to introduce the Big Red Ball on Sunday 30th November with their own cabaret promoting stars of yesteryear. With UKP1.00 going to local children whose lives are affected by HIV or AIDS we should all mark make it a success by supporting it! No opening date being given out for the new bar in St. Andrew's Lane. Very eagerly awaited by those not in La Deva's clique. One rumour that did get to my years is the bill for brasswork is UKP1000.00 so that will keep the cleaners busy. It will be open several nights a week from 7pm and Saturday all day and I suspect the invite to that opening night will be lost in the post too! There is much speculation about who will frequent which venue but the largest usually wins and I don't fancy the long cold walk to Bibliotek to find it's full and I can't get in or my friends are at Liberty Nightclub or its bar which is to be called Excess or XS or similar. Wimmin's Disco held monthly in Sinatras has been blasted for raising their entry place after several years. The usual moaners are to be heard but inflation hits the gay community as well. Please support the team who run these nights. Gay Outdoor Group "Hillbillies" hold their Christmas Caper on Sat 13 December. For venue and menu details phone Kevin on 455099. I hear our Aberdonian neighbours are less than happy with their scene which now consists of one pub with a dance floor. Castros remains as the Le Fevre hobby with occasional nights having an entrance fee of eight pounds which alienates (and pisses off) the lesbigay crowd. Well, you didn't support the better venue, so tough. A lesson perhaps for Dundonians in their impending battle of the clubs. The postman just shot his load (of mail) through the letter box. My invite for the opening of Bar XS in St. Andrew's Lane has arrived. Must arrange manicure, hairdresser, ballgown so I'll have to close. You want to know when it's opening do you? You mean you didn't get an invite? Change your friends girl, change your friends! Love ya, Liquid Silk ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ GLASGOW ======= Sunday - the day of rest - right?? Get up at 1 o'clock, watch Eastbenders, read the News of the Screws, a quick Pot Noodle and a Mars Bar for lunch, back to bed for a couple of hours, get up and have a cruise round Asda for a few cans of beans and to lust after the pretty young things on the weekend shift, down to Queen's Park to check out the flora and fauna, back home in time for Corrie, spend the rest of the evening listening to some DECENT music on QFM Classic Rock Sunday, shit, shower and shave, then off in to town for some clubbing! But, not today! Seems like my answering machine is buggered and his Editorness has been trying to contact me to tell me copy deadline is tomorrow, so I'm going to have to give you all a quickie this month! (So, what's new?). Not an awful lot to report, really, but November is always a quietish time in clubland. Still nothing definite to report regarding the very short lived Garbos. Usual load of rumours doing the rounds, does anybody know what's REALLY happening? All you poor Edinbuggers who don't get a nice dinky wristband for your Hogmanay piss-up can always make your way through to Glasgow where there are half a dozen street parties to choose from, including one specially for us lesbigays down in Virginia Street. There's a lot to be said for the scene concentrating business in one area, and a gay street party probably wouldn't be possible anywhere else but in our own Pink Triangle. Hope this is a BIG success, as it's something the straight press have to take notice of and should do wonders for our visibility. I see that Boyz has screwed up again on their recent piece about Glasgow. Bennets only open two nights a week - WRONG! Stella playing at the ACADEMY in Royal Exchange Square - WRONG! Still, at least they've finally removed the defunct Club X and Squires from the listings! Was asked by assistant manageress Joyce from the Waterloo to let you all know about her departure for New Zealand. After six years, she's decided to head off down under for pastures new. A going away party has been arranged, but will have taken place by the time this appears in print. Hope it all goes well, anyway. At the time of writing, the refurb of the GGLC cafe-bar has still not begun, and the venue is still open for business. The decorators are still in Delmonica's putting the finishing touches on the paintwork and the upstairs kitchen. Been hearing quite a few moans about the price of a game of pool, and at a quid a throw, I can see why! Pool tables cost about twelve pounds a week to rent, and other places manage a good profit at 50p a game, so perhaps the scene are justified in feeling that they are being ripped off! Anybody else think that the notice on Clone Zone's door is dead funny? You know, the sign that warns breeders that they are entering a gay establishment and may find the goodies offensive! I'd have thought the window displays would have made that perfectly obvious. Or do the blue rinse brigade actually think that the hetties dress up in all the leather, chains, camouflage gear, harnesses and handcuffs the gay scene keep in our wardrobes? (Apart from all the judges, MPs, clergymen that we keep reading about in the papers). Brilliant PA a couple of weeks ago at the Polo from Jimmy Somerville. Not really my type of music, but great to hear some of the old stuff that had you disco-dollies rocking in the 80's, along with his current release. Followers of this column will be aware of my feeling about the gay scene being palmed off with soap opera walk-ons and no hope talentless so called boy bands being paraded as club artistes, so it was a refreshing change to hear a truly talented entertainer. Only one complaint, get her a box to stand on next time, cos us lot at the back couldn't see a thing! The Polo now have Alan and Maggie from JOY doing their Minted night on Sundays. Not so sure about the idea of promoting the night by giving out specially wrapped packets of Polo Mints: I woke up the following day to find the cats playing tiddlywinks all over the floor with the bloody things. Finally, got to say how much I agree with Calmac about the scene not keeping us up to date with what's happening. We're all out and about on the scene often enough and are more than happy to cover events and groups if somebody tells us about them! People are quick enough to come up to me when I'm out pubbing and clubbing to moan about stuff I've NOT covered, but not so quick to tell me about up and coming events. We can be contacted by phone, letter, fax and e-mail, so let us know what's happening and we'll gladly come along and do a write-up. Just remember to get the right magazine though - it really gets on my tits when people come up and say "Ooh, I recognise you from your picture, you work for Gay Scotland, don't you?". AAARGH! Now that the scene up in Aberdeen has finally been declared clinically dead, I've been bumping into loads of boyz down for the weekend. Good to see so many old faces that I've lost touch with over the years, but who started the rumour that I'm moving back up to open another gay club? I'm afraid not! Hard to believe it was almost five years ago that I took over the now defunct Caberfeidh! The police patrols in Kelvingrove Park seem to have cooled off at the moment, as I've not heard so many complaints from cruisers being stopped and questioned. I've not been there myself recently, and this has nothing to do with the fact I've recently moved just along the road from Queen's Park! Mind you, at least Kelvingrove Park isn't knee deep in bloody mud! Anyway, that's all for this month's extremely hastily written column. Yeah, I've missed out loads of stuff, but there's only so much I can put together in such a short time. Gonna have to make up for it next month - get out the 6 point, Seumas! LUV, MINERVA. minerva@drink.demon ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- INVERNESS ========= Hello fans, how are we all? Well, one or two things have been happening, including Jesus Christ visiting Nico's, but I'll let you stew about that for a while. Anyway, that bunch of mischievous nutters gallivanting about under the name of Highland Youth Group have had a couple of good nights out. The firework display was well attended despite it being a pissing wet night and once sparks had flown in the nicest possible way the bunch then minced to Nico's to round off the evening with a couple of glasses of sherry. Now, on the night of the Halloween Party, however, considerably more sizeable containers were used to drink from (vats spring to mind!!). The evening was a bit slow to start with, but later on an influx of folks really made the party go with a swing, much to the relief of the group's steering committee who spent the day rushing about like blue arsed or should I say pink chiffon arsed flies trying to get the last minute arrangements sorted out. Lily Savage from Elgin won the fancy dress prize and I didn't (Bitch!). Reach Out Highland under their new manager Jackie Redding are organising this year's World AIDS Day service on December the 1st. It is to be held in the chapel at Raigmore Hospital. Contact Ronald on Inverness (01463) 711585 for further details. All are very welcome to attend. Recent gossip heard is that certain comments made by myself have ruffled the feathers of some of the slightly older generation of gays in Inverness when I mentioned class and job differences in a previous issue and how certain groups seem to class themselves above the rest of us and I stated that they know who they are... remember? Well, it seems that the older group have put their best paranoia hats on and have thought I was talking about them. Actually, I wasn't, as it happens, but if the cap fits ... At least it shows that they take the time to read my monthly load of bollocks. I realise that I'm not exactly the most outgoing and friendly person towards this group, however they should not get paranoid about it and think I'm slagging them unnecessarily, it's simply a case of my own paranoia that I don't mix with them or speak. On a recent visit to Nico's, I'm ashamed to say that I told Jesus Christ to fuck off or I'd split his face. This very much provoked outburst occurred when a bearded fellow at the end of the bar claiming to be the Messiah, kept interrupting our conversation by claiming we were talking crap and saying who cares and then offering to convert everyone within earshot, so once I reared myself up onto my hind legs and offered my face splitting services, Jesus went quiet. However, he was spotted the following day, hanging around one or two of Inverness's cottages, no doubt intending to fill any other cottagers with his Holy Spirit of sorts. Well, good luck to him and all I can say is that the dog shite I stepped in the other day stood a better chance of turning me (or anyone else for that matter) on than he did. (I can hear her Editorialness going ooh get her - if she prints it anyway!). (Actually, I can't work out if you're punting an atheistic viewpoint or just don't like guys with beards. - Ed.). Can't mind if this will be the last issue of the mag before Christmas (Bah, Humbug) so, if it is the last, have a Cool Yule and ya's better send me sackfuls of cards! See ya! CalMac, calmac@drink.demon.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ABERDEEN ======== Aye, aye once more, and as always, fit like? Well, what have you lot been up to then? I've been quite good recently, and have avoided going out during the week. Mind you, that's perhaps more to do with being fiscally challenged than not wanting to go out!! Having said that, when you work from 6.30 in the morning until 9am at night, you don't really feel like going out and misbehaving, do you? So, what's happening in old Aberdeen then? Rumours are afoot once more as to the location of a new gay venue. The most common bit of speculation is that this new place is to be situated around the Adelphi. Is Oh Henry's turning queer? No one actually knows, so I wait with baited breath to find out. It would be nice to have a new venue in town because after all, variety is the spice of life, and a bit of competition is always healthy. In theory anyway! Castro is definitely a lot busier since the demise of Caberfeidh, although I could suggest a few improvements that would make it a lot better. For a start, get the bloody hand dryer fixed in the gents! Either that or get a paper towel dispenser installed - the hand towels on the window ledge aren't exactly the most hygienic solution to drying one's hands (Can't you use your bloody trousers? - Ed.). The beer leaves a lot to be desired too, although I have been somewhat immune to crap beer after managing to drink the Caberfeidh's offerings for four years! (Jeez, is it really four years since I started going out on the scene?) Despite the upturn in the numbers going to Castro, there are a lot of new faces, and I wonder where all the old ones have gone. Although it's a blessing that some of them have disappeared, I can't help thinking that there must be some allegedly straight club somewhere that is harbouring all these queers that are disgruntled with what there is to offer at the moment. I have heard of a lot more activity going on in and around Golden Square, although I'm not rushing out to check that one out for myself!! A word of warning for those of you who are trolling the square, and other famed cruising areas, as a couple of friends have been approached by the police on various visits and with 24 hour video surveillance in the Square too, it's not the best place to find a man really! Talking of straight clubs, I paid another visit to Joy again recently, and once again I had a fantastic night! It is a very relaxed atmosphere, although it doesn't take an idiot to work out why! Alan's set was quite trancey this time, which is right up my street, and the dark club helps to create a good atmosphere. Although I have yet to try any of the talent (of which there is a great deal), much of it seems to be quite open-minded. I had "looks" from quite a few cuties. I'm not a great one for trying to pick up in a straight club at the best of times, so I usually wait until someone pays me a bit of attention. And that night it was certainly happening! So for anyone who wants to pay a visit, and hasn't been before, it's on Shiprow, or thereabouts, and it costs a fiver to get in. There doesn't seem to be a dress code as far as I can see, and the bar prices aren't as extortionate as some other clubs. Those of you who drink nothing but water will be pleased to know that it's free! Amadeus, allegedly Scotland's biggest nightclub, was another place that I visited for the first time. Talent aplenty, and much of it available too. I went on a Sunday night, and was quite impressed as it only cost UKP3.50 to get in and UKP1.50 a pint. I was supposed to be drinking coke that night, but when there's only 30p difference between a pint and a soft drink, what would you choose? Getting there isn't as daunting as it would first seem, as there are regular free buses going from town, and also from Hellhead of Satan, home of many thousand students. Needless to say, the student count is generally quite high. So, what else is going on? Well, a week after I moved back here, my relationship, which was blossoming wonderfully, started to wilt and then eventually died, so I am once again young, free and single (again!). I am at the moment debating as to whether to go out to Castro to check out some of these new faces!! Sundays aren't exactly the best nights for going out, although if you want a quiet pint (with the occasional interruption from some old git that's had too much to drink) it's okay. Despite my criticisms of Castro earlier, I have a couple of positive suggestions that might help to bring in some extra business. For a start, the drinks prices are fairly expensive compared to some other pubs, and when you're paying UKP1.90 for a pint of lager, it's easy to be tempted into going somewhere that's cheaper. A happy hour from 8pm until 10pm might just work. A quid a pint, or two for the price of one, or something. anything to drag extra bodies in would be acceptable. Right, I'd better get going I suppose. I want to try and sink a few beers before the night's out, and who knows, I might even get lucky. As always, any comments or criticisms, write or email (at your own risk). Any straight club owners who want to promote their venues as being mixed, get in touch. PLEASE, gimme something else to write about. You know there's something wrong when Calmac from Inverness gets a bigger column than I do!! Take care, and be good.
