Inside, for those crawling out of hibernation, all the gossip and the latest list of where to shelter from the cold; for those who need a bed warmer, the incomparable Meet Market! In this issue: Edinburgh Dundee Glasgow Inverness Aberdeen ScotsGay Voice Personals Boxes - the ScotsGay Meet Market Venues ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ EDINBURGH ========= A Guid New Year tae youse all! I saw in the New Year in the High Street which was half full of English tourists and not a patch on its former unregulated self. I'll no be back next year! And, when the novelty wears off, neither will they. I finished up somewhat the worse for wear in Kaff Kudos before heading off for London Road! Talking of which, the recent queer bashings in the Calton area have led to a swift and welcome police response with a number of males currently in custody charged with attempted murder. It's not know if those responsible were motivated by Islamic fundamentalism as has been suggested or whether their actions were those of the common or garden homophobe. Whichever way, let's hope that other bashers will be deterred in future by the prompt police action. I hear that cybergeeks will be flocking to Route 69 on Saturday 24th January for a meet-up of users of the Internet Relay Chat #gay-scotland channel. Seriously, they're a friendly bunch - made up of all ages and backgrounds. Allsorts, the gay 'local' up at the West End will be closed for a few weeks for a refurb, according to Bert. No doubt a few of the regulars will make it up to the East of Princes Street for a change until their old stamping ground re-opens. The fantastic Bent returns to its scrummy new home at the Shooting Gallery on the infamous Broughton Street on Saturday 21st February from 11pm-3am. The madness continues courtesy of the ever so Trendy Wendy or should I say Bendy Wendy and the oldest fossil in town, Maggie Joy, spinning the best in House Music, past and present, while Mr Guy Christmas plays stuff your granny would be proud of upstairs. Worth checking out is the new feature: The Touch Feely Room - I'll leave your imagination to work that one out but let's hope that the illumination is poorer than downstairs at the New Town these days now that the management have splashed out on some new lightbulbs! It seems that the Regent Buffet, just across from the Stag & Turret, has had a brief spell under gay management. Unfortunately, the chap who was running the place has disappeared mysteriously (back to Glasgow?) and the pub is up for grabs again with rumours that it may really go gay this time. Also up for grabs is the hole in the ground next door to Route 69. Will it go gay? Hard to tell! But, if the brewery which owns the pub thought the original price tag too steep, who else is likely to step in? It just leaves me to remind you that tickets are flying out of the door for Switchboard's Valentines Ball on 14th February in the Assembly Rooms. Get yours now or be sorry! Catch you all again next month. Iain Iain@drink.demon.co.uk ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ DUNDEE ====== The Dundee scene is bursting out all over. We are now spoilt for choice with three bars and two nightclubs competing for our Pink Pound. Whilst the gay scene pays less for its booze and clubs than the straights in Dundee, the latest addition to Dundee has dropped their prices yet again after failing to attract the disenfranchised from La Devas and Lido. The eagerly awaited refurb of Devas starts very soon and we all hope it will be major. Recent trouble with some straight gorillas alarmed the tens of customers one Friday night causing the intervention of our Karen who protected her flock in usual style. On the other hand the owner of Bar XS recently escorted three men out when he mistakenly thought the non-camp lads were not gay. The mistake was spotted only when one said switchboard had told them where to come. The owner invited them back in only to be told where to go. Not many places can afford to turn custom away. Whilst hard-up (for cash that is) I have ventured out to the new place called Biblio Tek to see if the reports I had heard could all possibly be true. Let's quash one rumour immediately - they do have heating and the two calor gas heaters did a remarkable job keeping the frost off the windows (inside). Lack of bodies also makes the place cold as does poor service but Joan Gilmour has reportedly left. Lack of security was not a worry for us during our one drink. So come on Dundonians, the Biblio Tek cannot understand why you don't support them - use it or lose it. Congratulations to Liberty Nightclub on its second birthday. The Bucks Fizz party was busy on a wintry night in January. Drinks promos have showered upon us: Morgan's Spiced, Smirnoff, Cider, Lager and Budweiser have been supporting the venue's attempt at retaining the market share. The result has been some very pissed people in free T-Shirts actually having money left for a kebab on the way home. A Perth Road health and fitness club has barred all men in favour of women. Local Tory rag the Dundee Courier has supported the men whilst being totally unaware of the happenings in the male sauna by married men who are supposed to be straight. Shall we see the Lockee sauna busier now, perhaps? I'll have to go and report on it - or shall I ask Liberty's owner who was spotted there recently? Dundee Outreach Team are doing their stall slightly differently at Liberty next time in the hope of keeping the safer sex message fresh in our minds. They have a message passing service on Valentine's Day and a drag ball on their third birthday, which is Sunday 29th March. I'll just keep the slap on after Chapel. Switchboard have expanded their services to go shortly to a two-nightly phone line, publication of a newsletter and setting up a private detective agency to find out just who the hell is Liquid Silk. Still love ya! Liquid Silk ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ GLASGOW ======= Hiya fans! Well then, have you broken all your New Year's resolutions yet? Hope so! Stuff all that crap about giving up getting pissed, smoking, going on a diet and getting to bed early. Life's too far short for all that bollocks! The New Year celebrations certainly went with a bang, if you missed all the fun yourselves. The Town was mobbed, and the area around the Pink Stage down in the gay ghetto was crammed with fairies out for a good time. I wrote last month about how the clubs pissed off their customers by jacking up the entry prices "because it's Christmas", and Penelopes learned the hard way that the scene was none too happy about their crappy treatment. If you'd picked up a copy of the Budweiser sponsored guide to everything that was on over the festive period, you could have been forgiven for thinking that the only entertainment was in the King/Gibson venues. No mention of the Waterloo, Tin Pans or Austins, and Edinburgh had most of its venues missed out too! Most of their listings were for the Catwalk and CC Blooms, although the Academy did get a mention and a double page advert, not surprisingly really, coz Fire Island published the guide! At least ScotsGay list all venues including the ones that don't stock it because we've written things that they haven't liked in the past about stuff that they've done, and places that don't pay their advertising bills and have to be threatened with court action to get the unpaid dosh! You know who you are! Flamingos recently opened its doors after a total refurbishment since its short lived reincarnation as Garbos. Precided over by boss man Chris, the club is currently open from Wednesday to Sunday, but as the trade picks up over the coming months, they're planning to open seven days a week making it Glasgow's only full time gay club. There are no daft dress codes, or people being knocked back at the door because they don't fit in the image that some of the other clubs would like to project, which will be welcomed by those of you who like to look and dress as individuals, rather than allowing yourselves to be moulded in to a nice, safe, standardised, stereotyped, "customer profile", that some venue owners prefer. As someone who's always swung against the tide, looking and dressing in a way that doesn't go along with any of this bullshit, I'm glad to see that the market forces created by the weekday club nights have forced some of the venues to water down all this dress code crap! With the possibility of another club opening in the city centre, a sartorial free for all could soon be on the cards! DJ Stella tells me that he will now be directly in charge of running the Tuesday club night at Tin Pan Alley, and will shortly be relaunching it as Jo-Jos 98 with new poofy decor, dancier handbag and Janet music, and various regular PAs. The refurb should also be starting soon, although Stella assures me this won't interfere with the Monday and Tuesday club nights. Hopefully the place will be as dark and cruisy as before, coz that's what we like about it! Right then, let's have a quick look back at what happened in 1997. Casualties were Squires and Astro Gifts, which both closed, Gillespies which closed, re-opened briefly as Garbos, closed again and recently re-opened as Flamingos. Delmonicas closed briefly for a total refurbishment, then re-appeared as a bigger, brighter, better venue. New additions to the scene were Caffe Latte, Clone Zone and Centurion Health Club. The Polo finally finished the decorating, did a lot of improvements down in the disco, and opened the Trophy Room. The service has vastly improved, and most of the dress-code stuff has disappeared, which makes it highly recommended by this column. Talking of casual dress, this seems to have spread to the management. And I can remember boss man Brian back in our Assistant Managerette days with Lanton Leisure, when he used to wear that nice polyester suit with the Alexis Colby lapels (well it was a long time ago!). Stella moved from Tin Pan Alley to The Apartment, then back to Tin Pans, then on to Penelopes and the Apartment again, then back to Tin Pans, where he'll hopefully stay as it's the best of the three venues for his club nights, and the numbers would appear to bear this out. DJ Boff took over the Tuesday night at Penelopes despite having had some of his classic record collection stolen during the break-in at Garbos, which he later got back, and at the time of writing is still going strong with his popular 70s, 80s and HiNRG night. Bennets, Sadies and Austins continued to pack them in. And the Waterloo, well they had a few changes of management, but the place is still as mobbed as ever, Ms Hutton still as LOUD as ever, and the service is still the most efficient of all the scene venues. As for the Press, well ScotsGay is now in its fourth year (I can't believe it's four years I've been doing this!), G2 appeared briefly, then disappeared, Pulse was taken over, appeared for one issue, and a the time of writing hasn't been seen since. This leaves ScotsGay with only one Scottish-based competitor, Gay Scotland, which was unable to continue as a magazine due to dwindling circulation, and had to resort to a freepress tabloid. I notice they took a swipe at us in their last issue over their print-run. The figures are quite simple really. ScotsGay prints as many copies of the mag as the scene realistically needs. The Great Bald Ginger One could also print 12,000 copies of this magazine by putting it out on cheap, crappy newsprint, and hoping that nobody notices the unread piles that would still be cluttering up the pubs and clubs three weeks later! Don't believe me? Just take a look at the piles of GS that are still lying around long after its issue date! A large print run may sound impressive, but it doesn't really count for much if a lot of it remains in unread piles, a fact which has already been commented on by at least one of the advertisers! Fact is, if the free press hasn't shifted within 3-5 days of issue, it'll still be there three weeks later, and any doubters should take a look at the GGLC, where there are often up to three back issues of Boyz and the Pink Paper lying around on the floor! Nuff Said! Just got a phone call from Robert of the Glasgow Bears Club who asked me to let all you fur-fetishists know what's happening. Things have been a bit quiet since their old haunt at Squires closed down, but they've found a new Bear Cave at the Court Bar, and have now resumed meeting on the 2nd Saturday of the month in the basement at 8.45pm. Meetings are open to Bears, friends of Bears and Bear fanciers, and newcomers will be warmly welcomed. I've also been asked to tell you about their Valentine's Day Bear Party which will be held in the Court Bar on February 14th from 8.30pm onwards. The Glasgow heat of the Mr Bear UK competition is going to be held shortly, so watch this column! LUV, MINERVA. minerva@drink.demon ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INVERNESS ========= Well here she is, cross(dress?)ing the (Highland) Border, carrying her fags and her whoring orders, French letters for the rich, French letters for the poor and my bone up the ass of the boy next door! Yes it's true, if you haven't guessed from that excellent piece of prose, Calmac's on the train, going on his holidays, having worked all through the festive season with little or no break I'm totally f!!!ed, so thanks to Jackie R at ROH for convincing me to go! Himself can't join me, worse luck, however I'm sure I'll still enjoy myself, staying with my "Big Brov" + "Big Sissy" in Edinburgh. I will be available for consultation, and being bought drink mainly in the New Town bar. Anyway, now off the train, it was nice when I left Inverness but it's pissing down here in Edinburgh. Now sitting in Nexus Cafe Bar, within the LGB Centre, anyway, nuff drivel for now - more later - and on with the Highland Report written on location. Reach Out Highland are inviting all to come along to their Ceilidh dance to be held at the Station Hotel, Academy Street, Inverness. Contact ROH on Tel (01463) 711585 for info and tickets. Tickets are UKP10 each, which some may consider a wee bit expensive, however the success of last year's Valentine Ceilidh makes this price well worth paying. I s'pose I should mention that the shenanigans start at 20:00 (8pm for all you non 24 hour clock people) 'til late on Friday 13th Feb (hope there aren't too many suspicious queens). I suppose I should also mention that this event is not exclusive to LGBs, but to everyone - regardless of sexuality. Now as us ScotsGay columnists tend to do every now and then, I'm going to get on my soapbox. The subject is one of the more infamous cottages in the Town Centre. Now before we go on here, I'd just like to say that this isn't a go at cottaging, as I have been as guilty as the next man, but a pop at the few who could spoil it for the many. Hanging around near this place, or popping in a few times in an afternoon is one thing (despite the occasional appearance on CCTV when some bus driver gets the hump and phones the polis), but it really is taking the piss, obvious, sad, not to say potentially dangerous, to more or less stand in there for a whole afternoon, ie. in excess of four hours at a time, not trap anything, spoil it for everyone else, get comments made about you by straight(?) pissed off lads coming out of there (I've 'eard them) and without any further ado leave a stream of cum up the urinal front and mince out with your bag around your shoulders. Surely there is enough for everyone to contend with: what with the twisted dwarf who hangs about at the cubicles muttering and trying to pretend he's not having a toss; or auld claret trousers who stands there more or less facing you, playing with himself, with (I kid you not) mouth open & tongue hanging out like some kind of moron. (Also whilst I think about it, this isn't a pop at any specific age group, it's all ages). Right! Got that out of my system, wot's next? Oh yes, for the umpteenth time, why is there a lack of news etc. from the Moray area - Kenniff sweetie (editor of Moray's Gayzette), can you not manage to send me a copy occasionally, so that I can include news in my column for you? Surely this would benefit the area??? I await, with interest... Well, I've had a very nice afternoon, here in Nexus. Mine hosts' Fiona and Susan have looked after me very well. I must say that the prices in here are far more reasonable than they were before, and my massive portion (wahay!) was delicious. Anyway, away to enjoy the delights of Edinburgh. See ya's! Oh, as Gussie decided to have a quote, here's another: "Get as much cock in yer gob today - as you could get run over by a bus tomorrow"... CalMac, calmac@drink.demon.co.uk ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ABERDEEN ======== Well, happy bloody new year everyone, although I cannot really see what's so happy about it. It's zero degrees outside, and with the windchill factor, it's minus twelve! I'm supposed to be going out this evening, but as the white fluffy stuff seems to be falling from the sky at an ever increasing rate, I'm beginning to change my mind. So, what's going on in old Dod and Bunty land then? Nothing much, as usual, although things definitely seem to be looking up as far as our scene is concerned. The monopoly that Castro currently has is soon to end with the arrival of Club 2000, eta 6th February. It's about time that we had a little more choice, and hopefully the competition will do nothing but benefit us, the punters. Formerly Buskers (see, that rumour was true after all!), the new club is situated on Shiprow, and for those of you who don't know where that is, it's on the little lane that runs along the side of the Stakis City Hotel. Close to Joy too, and not too far from Castro, so perhaps we'll have our own little gay village set up! But there again, perhaps not. Club 2000 is to be open 7 nights a week, filling that Monday evening gap, and will be open from 6pm until 2am. Entry is free before 11pm, but it's a fiver to get in afterwards. Perhaps a little on the steep side, but get in earlier and you'll be okay. Colin, who is going to be running the joint, tells me that live acts will form an integral part of the entertainment, so watch this space for details! Let's hope this new venture gets the support it deserves, so that our scene can rise out of the pit that it seems to have dug itself into. Castro continues to be busy at weekends, and indeed, certain evenings during the week are becoming busier too. Last night it was packed downstairs and up, which is a good sign indeed. I'm pleased to see that there has been an influx of new faces too, both young and old, although I have heard complaints from one or two people that there still aren't enough women! I suppose, you can't keep everyone happy, can you? The Rothes Glen Hotel was the venue for the Moray Gay & Lesbian Network's annual Christmas bash once again. After the previous year's success, the sum of money raised for Moray LGB Switchboard was considerably more. Again, the Golden Dildo and Breast Awards ceremony was held, causing great amusement, and bemusement in some cases! No Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were present this time though, which makes a change... So, that's about all the news, really. I'm currently considering legal action due to the rumours that Calmac is spreading, concerning a certain part of my anatomy. I shall not comment, but to say that I'll see you in court, sweetie! Anyway, I'm going off out for a while, as I could do with a pint. It'll make my third night out in a row, but hey, I'm only young once. Mind how you go, and remember, if you can't be good, be careful!
