I bash this poem against the bow, Name it G.G.L.C., and endow Its future cruise with benedictions, Sailing past all feuds and frictions. Come all ye lovers and affairs, Singles, discrete souls, and bears, Straightest of straights, bentest of bents, Carbolic scrub, Armani scents, Doc Martens girls, minikilt boys, Buyers of exotic toys, Opera queens, ballet queens, And all the hesitant in-betweens, Trendsetters and anoraks, Underdogs looking for whacks, Indomitably spring-heeled dykes Sweeping up on mountain bikes, Jessies with attitude, closet cases, Solicitors with bright red braces, Levis with a coloured hanky To signal the right hanky-panky, Lurex and Spandex and other ex-es To mix the senses and the sexes, But if you should prefer a suit We'll certainly no pit ye oot, For this is where we all can meet Down by the river in Dixon Street, And the Broomielaw rolls on to the sea With the happy cargo of G.G.L.C. Edwin Morgan November the 4th saw a fine collection of Scotland's glitterati (and numerous punters) descend on Glasgow's Broomielaw for the opening of the new Glasgow Gay and Lesbian Centre at 11 Dixon Street, just off St. Enoch Square. Among the dignitaries were local MPs "Gorgeous" George Galloway, Maria Fyfe and Mike Watson, MEP Bill Miller and lesbian rock star Horse McDonald. The Centre was opened in style with Edwin Morgan reading a poem he'd written to mark the bash, then unveiling the GGLC tapestry. Everyone piled out into the courtyard to watch thoosands of black and pink balloons disappear up into the clouds (much to the bemusement of students in nearby halls) followed by antics with sharp pointy things and sensitive bits of anatomy - all being filmed for posterity by a film crew from Chanel No. 4. With a couple of shop units, a cafe and plenty of meeting space the Centre is sure to be pure dead gallus (once the big butch builders have moved on, sigh...). You can also surf the Centre on http://www.gglc.org.uk/gglc or email gglc@gglc.org.uk... --------------------------------------------------- ABERDEEN ======== Hello again from Aberdeen! It doesn't seem like a whole month since I was last doing this column. Very little new been happening up here - no wonder so many people leave this city when they read the ScotsGay columns for Edinburgh and Glasgow. So many pubs and clubs to go to and a couple of million shags to choose from. As exclusively revealed in this column last month, there will not be another club opening in Aberdeen and there are now a few silly little queens going around with red faces who claimed to know the full details but were sworn to secrecy. Aberdeen has already lost one venue and another is now only open six days - doesn't this tell you people something? Scene Activity: a bit quieter this month with both clubs looking a bit empty sometimes but this should pick up again as the festive season approaches. People are still going out but appear to be saving their pennies for the weekend. Two other places for the disco dollies to try out in Aberdeen now: Joy (nothing to do with the one in Edinburgh) has been attracting the dancing queens for some time now and on Friday and Saturday they now have a largely gay clientele. OK, so it's a mixed crowd, but nobody cares whether it's girls and boys, boys and boys or girls and girls - just as long as you're young and dancy. Another club to check out is The Ministry. It's straight but as long as you're not shagging on the dance floor, nobody seems to mind. This place seems to be the club to go to on Sundays now, and you can sometimes spot more fairies in there on a Sunday than there are in the two gay venues the Pink Flamingo and Club Caberfeidh!. Don't know if this is the last time I'll be writing before Xmas, so here's hoping that you all have a good time over the festive season. Get your nuts roasting by the fire and all that... G. ------------------------------------------ DUNDEE ====== Dundee may be the City of Discovery, but the one thing we've discovered here at ScotsGay is that you all seem to be a load of wallflowers when it comes to telling us about what's going on in your lovely City. Perhaps it's because you've got something very special going on up there and you don't want us outsiders to muscle in on things. Or is it because you really don't think that we'd be interested to know? It really is such a shame. Every time we visit, we find Dundee full of warm and friendly people despite its small scene. So, if you're a Dundonian who wants to tell us what's going on up there, we'd be glad to hear from you. Just give us a ring on 0131-539 0666 or e-mail us at scotsgay@drink.demon.co.uk. In the meantime, here's a snap of Deva's which we took when we were last there. It's Dundee's only lesbigay bar and used to be called The Gauger. Centrally situated, it's run by Anne and Karn, and features regular live music on Thursday nights with the occasional PA. It's the centre of the City's queer life and is justly popular. Just round the corner is Club Cruise, part of the Oscars Complex, which is a one nighter every Saturday night. And a very busy place at times too! If you're looking for an off scene pint, the Speedwell Tavern near the Uni seems to attract quite a few lesbigay folk although discretion seems to be the order of the day. Probably worth it if you're a real beer drinker! -------------------------------------------------------------- EDINBURGH ========= Another month, an other lot of the same going on. Its seems that the clientele are still hopping between Cafe Kudos, CC Blooms and Route 66 during the night, each venue offering a different atmosphere. Of course, the New Town Bar et al are still doing what they do best, catering for each niche quite admirably. Route 66 is keeping the folks happy by providing good quality beers, and some interesting vodkas - although their supply of 80/- seems to run a bit dry too often for me! The blackboards in the toilets always have something amusing scrawled on them, and you can't help but add your own quip, if you are not embarrassed by the onlookers. CC Blooms is of course doing well. Twixt karaoke, strippers and the happening dance floor, it's guaranteed to draw the punters in, especially as the night turns into the morning hours. The gorgeous selection of bar staff cope well with throngs of thirsty people, and Hyacinth the Bucket swallows up all the full ashtrays and empty bottles as quick as you can pick someone up. Don't you just love the bouncers when they hear the panic bell downstairs? They act as if the Third World War has broken out, and only they can stop it, admittedly with the help of some off-duty staff who can't help but get their word in. Something I'll be looking forward to in CC's is the appearance of Atomic Kandy who are opening their UK tour with a gig there on Tuesday 5th December. Cafe Kudos is still drawing in a mixed crowd, from gay-friendly peeps right through to the legendary Scene Queens. A great place for a chat over a drink, without your ears being battered to death by the latest club remix. The toilets are a trek away, allowing you to bump into the most interesting people. The tables in the downstairs corner provide you with endless entertainment: try keeping your glasses standing on the curved surfaces, without covering your nose to avoid the lovely woody smell they emit. Must admit that I haven't yet made it across the road to Picardy's which has re-opened as a Burlesque Show Bar with shows at 8.30 every night except Tuesdays and Sundays). I hear that it's a fun place! Which is more than can be said for LADS which is shut for a refurb and is, therefore, no fun at all! It's due to re-open mid December. However, the New Town Bar can also be fun, the dark room offers plenty of scope for .... brighter lighting, or you can miss all the action and sit upstairs with your pint, wondering what has changed in the refurbishment. By the ways guys, how much Sweetheart Stout do you sell, there seems to an ample supply? Joy, Scotland's biggest lesbigay club is still banging on, although there seem to be fewer people attending than usual. I'm not sure what's changed, seems the good old formula of thumping trance/techno and top handbag isn't pulling in the crowds as it once did. However, it still manages to provide a happy and entertaining evening, if you can stand the music. So, Edinburgh's Lesbigay Scene continues, not bad for a city so small really - but I have to admit, I have popped through to Glasgow a few times to try and get away from the same routine. However, it's reliable and fun, what else so you need? Marcc ---------------------------------------------------------- GLASGOW ======= Hi from the Holy City once again! Glasgay! '95 has been and gone and didn't make the scene as busy as the organisers had obviously hoped. True, it brought a fair few honest and sonsie faces into the city, but they were mostly here for the diet of Arts and made little impact on the pubs and clubs. The Glasgay! Queerbash at the Tunnel only managed to attract some three hundred queers - about a third of capacity. I know it's an awkward venue to fill, but the truth is that although there is some crossover between the Arts Crowd and the Scene, it's sadly not as big as some people would like to believe. Of course, things aren't helped by the attitude of some of the Arty types who look down their noses at us and then look embarrassed when we bump into them trolling the parks! So, what else has been happening? I can tell you one thing that didn't and that was Sonia who was due to manifest herself at Bennets on 17th November. It appears that Bobby Gibson baulked when he saw all the 'extras' which had appeared on the contract over and above the fee he thought he'd agreed with the management of the 'star'. Quite right too, Bobby! Always someone to put something back into our community, Bobby is throwing a Benefit Party at Bennets on 1st December (with DJ Grant Duff) and all the door money is going to the new Gay and Lesbian Centre. (I hope I'm not being churlish when I say that they really should put the 'Bisexual' word in there somewhere - it rankles every time I see it missed out!) Talking of the Centre, it's certainly going to be a fab place when it opens properly and it's sure to bring more queer trade to the local straight pubs which probably won't endear it to the manager of Fat Boab's Ale House! The recent refurb at the Waterloo has settled in quite nicely and has brought a lot of new faces into the pub - people of all ages seem to get on well here. Most Fridays see Big John spinning a popular selection of the sounds of the 70s, 80s and 90s whilst the Festive Season should bring an interesting selection of live entertainment. But I'm afraid that Cal won't tell me precisely what and is obviously keeping something big up his sleeve (which is somewhere strange to keep something so big, but I'm told that Cal can be funny that way)! There's been an interesting rumour going around that there's to be a new gay hotel in the City - something which is sorely needed. Nobody seems to know very much about it, so it's nice to be able to be the first to reveal that it's true! I've managed to track down one of the partners - someone new to gay business - who tells me that, although it's too soon to confirm, he hopes that, if things work out right, it will go ahead in the New Year! Watch this space!!! Sorry to say, Divally's just isn't happening as far as gay punters are concerned. A shame as it was a good concept - perhaps a similar enterprise run by gay people might bring in enough of the wrong sort of trade to make it worth going to. As it is, I'm afraid that it really is Straightsville - at least on the nights I've poked my neb round the door. So, to the really big news of the month: Madame Gillespies is to have its own restaurant - La Cage. Serving posh nosh with high class ˆ la carte and table d'h™te menus, this really is a first for the scene in Scotland and should attract a lot of the gliteratti who will, no doubt, move on afterwards to the entertainment in the Club downstairs if they can get in - the place seems to be stowed out every night. La Cage will be opening for specially invited guests only on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th November and I've managed to get a ticket - yah boo to you lot!!! I'll report back in our next issue about my evening with the stars - I understand that there's a crowd coming along from a certain broadcasting concern that shall remain nameless! Squires and Delmonica's continue to attract good numbers - especially with their frequent Happy Hours. Whilst Austins is as user friendly as ever with always a nice smile from behind the bar even when the staff are working full out to keep up with demand. Rumours abound over GHQ where, a little bird tells me, just after the New Year could be an Interesting Time. Finally, a date for your diaries: Monday 29th of January will see the Glasgow Bars AIDS Welfare Fund's annual gay ball at the Central Hotel. More in our next issue.
