As well as listing the bookshops, cafes, pubs and clubs (and all their secret goings-on) our Meet Market has a huge range of hopeful souls looking for that special someone: it could be you! ------------------------------------------------------------------- TALKOUT Yup! It's that time of the year again! Time for the Glasgow Bars AIDS Welfare Fund's Gay Ball - that fixture of the social scene that just seems to get bigger and better every year. Now, it has grown too big for its previous home on the Renfrew Ferry and will take place this year in the Central Hotel - you can't really get much bigger and grander than the old Caledonian Railway's finest hotel which has always had quite a gay following! The evergreen Brenda Cochrane will be appearing along with the Michael Grimshaw Dancers. And you'll be able to trip the light fantastic to the sound of the Carlton Swing Band until the wee small hours. Then Big Karn Dunbar promises to be on her best behaviour whilst spinning the discs! The big event is on Monday 29th January from 8.30pm and tickets (if there are any left) are ukp10 from Delmonica's, GHQ, Madame G's, Squires and The Waterloo (or by post from Jim Glen, GBAWF, PO Box 3954, Glasgow. G51 4RA). Everybody will be togged up to the nines, so, if you don't have your own kilt, tux or ball gown, remember to hire your gear in time. Special deals for the night are available from: Dunvegan Kilts, Gilt Edge Menswear, Glam Fashions, High Society and McDonald & McKay. The Central Hotel's owners, Friendly Hotels plc, are also doing a special rate for accommodation: on production of your ball ticket, B&B (and full use of the hotel's extensive leisure facilities) will costukp25 for a single and ukp40 for a double or twin room. (For reservations, phone 0141-221 9680). We make no apology for plugging this event as much as we're doing. After all, it's the Scottish scene's main charity event. And the charity involved is one which doesn't have any paid staff (or committee members who run up expense bills): all those involved give their time free of charge so that every penny raised goes straight to improve the standard of life of People With AIDS (and their carers) at Ruchill Hospital. This is community fundraising at its best. It deserves our support, so support it! John Hein -------------------------------- ABERDEEN Once again it's time for your report on the scene in Aberdeen. However, before I start, I'd like to make a personal response to a piece of editorial in another scene magazine. Whether the piece was aimed at this publication in particular, or other magazines in general is of little concern. I would like to make it clear that I am not an employee of this publication, nor do I get paid for my views on the Aberdeen scene. They are my own personal opinions submitted on a voluntary basis and I assume that scene news from other cities is submitted in the same fashion. I do not write in a nicey-nicey fashion, because I'm told to say it like it is. If it's good it's good - if it stinks it stinks, so keep your personal animosities to yourself, 'cos I ain't interested! So, what's been happening up here?? Quiet festive season due a lot to the weather. If you lived out of town, forget the scene and sit at home waiting for the pipes to burst, or take bets on when the electricity was coming back on. Reasonably good turnout on Christmas and New Year's Eves, but not a lot in between. Nice to see a few old faces up visiting from down south, but can somebody answer this question for me? Why can somebody leave Aiberdin spikkin like Dod n Bunty div, an come back six minths later spikkin we' at posh accent a'body his in Londin, eh? I mean, fit wye can 'at happin? Quine's english tae Queen's English in less that a year, get a grip ye bams, an nae ferget yer roots!! Fit else, OOPS, I mean what else. Well a new club opened up for the yuppies, Young Underage Pretty People on E and Speed - only joking. Straight run but like many of the dancy places, stuff your sexuality, just boogie! Haven't heard any latest reports but will keep you informed on developments. Aberdeen rumour-mongers currently in overdrive. You know all the old ones by now, a new gay club opening up, one of the old ones closing, one of the old ones turning straight, both of the old ones closing, both of the old ones going straight. In fact all the same old crap that was getting put about last year. Can we please have some new rumours? It's boring when the same sad individuals rehash last year's drivel. We didn't believe it then, we don't believe it now!! Both venues still open and further egg-on-yer-face coming soon!! Mr Gay UK is being held in Club Caberfeidh again, date still to be announced. Women's discos, now on 1st Friday and 3rd Saturday of the month in the Pink, and a new men-only dress code night announced for downstairs. Basically it's underwear, leather or anything fetishy, and you don't have to worry about spectators as the dress code is rigidly enforced. That's it then, see ya soon!! PS. What's the difference between TLM's botty and a Kit-Kat? You only get four fingers in a Kit-Kat... DUNDEE Dundee had the pleasure of a white Christmas but as a result the New Year came in with more of a whoosh than a bang as Deva's Bar was flooded by burst pipes in the flats above on the eve of Hogmanay - talk about bringing the house down! Initial fears that the bar would not be able to open for a few days were soon washed away (forgive the pun) as Karen and her staff and friends rallied round to make one side of the bar area operable in time for Hogmanay night. Happily customers were able to congregate before moving on to the traditional Club Cruise Hogmanay party. Jan on the disco ensured that the party went with a swing and the music was a definitive improvement on the usual Saturday night offering - more of the same please! Trash has resumed at the Tay Hotel on Saturday nights in direct competition to Cruise. The disco is now being held in the large fiunction room and this will hopefully lead to improved standards in the area as they both try to lure the punters in. Word has it that the Hogshead in Union Street is becoming increasingly popular with Dundee women. Although predominantly straight, it does offer a fine selection af real ales and a pleasant atmosphere where you are not yelled out of the premises at closing time. There must be some doubt as to whether Deva's will be able to provide more live entertainment in the foreseeable future due to the flood damage but the bar is to be refurbished and we look forward to the improvements. The next women's disco is a Valentine special and this will be held at Sinatras from 8-12pm on either Friday 9th or 16th February, unfortunately confirmation of the date was not available at time of going to press but ask at Deva's or call the Gay Switchboard for details. Jol EDINBURGH I don't think that young marcc is flavour of month with our editor. It appears that he went off for a dirty weekend in Wolverhampton without handing in his copy, so I've been dragged through from Glasgow screaming and kicking to write about the Edinburgh scene. Everything seems so much quieter through in the East - perhaps the pubs and clubs are just recovering from the Xmas and New Year excesses. Certainly, everything is much more civilised in the Capital. A few changes since I was last through: Raymond has left Maggie Rayes and the place has reverted to its old name of the French Connection under the management of a very cheery Babs who was personally attending to the needs of her customers when I was in. Over the Rainbow is now under new management. Brian tells me that, after taking over the business completely, he's made quite a few changes. Instead of veering towards a restaurant, the place will be reverting more to the cafe sort of operation and will be featuring some live music. Just down Broughton Street, the Blue Moon is looking a lot fresher. The Tapas Bar has gone, and, in its place, there's a Pool Room! Splash? Maybe not. Over at the Top of the Walk, CC Bloom's is fair packing them in except, it would seem for our gallant editor, John Hein. Apparently he tried to get in the other night with a bit of trade he'd brought up from London, but the pair of them got knocked back at the door by the bouncers because they looked too hetty! What was even more galling was that his boyfriend and his trade had just been admitted without question. Talking of editors, Dave Richards of Pulse tells me that the taxi rank outside CC's is a sure fire place to pull. I must say I did wonder why he was hanging around outside instead of coming in for a pint, but I'd put that down to the usual PSGAHUS - Pre Student Grant Arrival Hardness Up Syndrome. Despite the stricter door policy at JOY which is intended to keep down the number of straights, it does seem to be quieter and less gay than it used to be. Don't get me wrong, the place is still great fun, but the competition from Taste at the Vaults is certainly showing. In fact, Taste really is THE place to be these days. Their cheaper entrance prices are nice too! But JOY aren't taking things lying down, they're promising more big name DJs. Now, who said that competition was a bad thing? Now that the New Town Bar has taken out the real ale, Route 66 appears to be the only place selling the stuff. Not a bad pint, but for the Bear and Beer Brigade, it's just a shame that there aren't a few more mature gentlemen in the place - Ray and Andy have definitely got the Bear Market sewn up at the New Town! Not only do they have a Big Beary Bulky Boys Club on the 4th Friday of the month, but the local Bear Club meet there too. Happy hunting, boys! I hadn't been in the Lord Nelson Bar in ages. And it was really the quietest I've ever seen it. On the other hand, I suppose it's a nice quiet place to take a new conquest for a drink without the risk of him being pulled by somebody else! I was rather impressed by all the offerings at Fantasies, the new sex shop in Drummond Street. Paddy, who found himself on the cover of the last ScotsGay, was telling me that being a pin-up boy had done wonders for his social life. Apparently, people keep coming up to him in pubs and passing comment on his taste in dildoes. I found an old familiar face in Drondale's in the shape of Terry - a strange shape, to be sure, but still a shape! In spite of the raunchier offerings at Fantasies, there was a steady stream of customers coming in for their bits and pieces. It seems that the two shops exist in a state of friendly co-operation with customers being recommended by one to the other if a particular item isn't in stock. I didn't have time to pop down to No 18, for a sauna, but I'm told that it is now full every day of the week. When, oh when, will we get that much promised sauna in Glasgow? That about wraps it up, I suppose. I'd forgotten that there was so much to see and do in Edinbugger - I really will have to brave the snail-rail over to the East a little bit more often! And it was nice to see the station catering at Waverley so faggotty - I'm sure I saw quite a few old faces around!!! PJ GLASGOW Hi from the Holy City once again! Well, I suppose the big news of the month has been the goings on at GHQ! Of course, I forecast this the other month, but ScotsGay's editor insisted on toning my report down a bit for fear of incurring a dose of the legals. As it is, the old guard have been swept away in a sea of debt and young Scott is now running the place on behalf of the landlords and running it very efficiently too if I may say so. "Who in their right minds would name a gay pub after a public lavatory in Edinburgh?", he asked me when I popped in the other day. The caff has already received a much needed revamp, and the whole place is going a bit more upmarket. The pub will be closing for a period too for an even more major revamp and will re-open with a new name. Scott's a right little teaser: he wouldn't tell me exactly what the new name will be, but kept muttering gnomically about a phoenix arising from the ashes and something about Harry's owner. Downtown at the Wateryloo, I see that Georgia is back on Wednesdays (with Billy at the keyboards). Manager Cal is pushing out the boat with a seven day happy hour from noon 'til 7 each evening. I make that a very happy seven hours, actually! He's also enticed DJ Boff into doing Friday and Saturday nights - and there have been some rare compliments from some of his older customers about the choice of music which also seems to go down well with the younger crowd. A rare talent amongst DJ's, it would seem. Ms Hutton continues to do her thing with Big Gordon on a Sunday - she calls it Karaoke, some people call it something else! Along the road at Madame Gillespies, you'll find DJ Boff on Mondays and Tuesdays - and Monday is now Feast, a fetish and bear night! Tuesday will be the day for male dancers with a top named drag act every second week, whilst Thursday will see "A Quiet Night In" with Alan Horn. Fridays and Saturdays are to be the nights for live PAs, Madame G's Showgirls and, of course, DJ Stella - and don't forget the weekend drinks promos! I mustn't forget to mention the Body Positive fundraiser at Madame G's on Saturday 27th January! Not to be missed! I gather that the 2 for the price of 1 promo at La Cage Restaurant is still on the go - you can pick up your cards in Madame G's and a few of the bars. Damned good value too! Over at Delmonica's, I see that they have a New Door Policy - that must be the third new door in as many months! Nevertheless, the place is still as crowded as ever. Wonder if the nightly 5-7 and 9-10 happy hours have anything to do with that? Robert has been splashing out on some stripey new wallpaper for the hall at Austins. And no, I won't tell you who it was who made the deadful joke about it being straight wallpaper. A fun filled week in there with Robert and May Miller on a Monday, The Tuesday Club on a - wait for it - Tuesday, Jason's Karaoke on Wednesdays, Big Karn's Camp Karaoke (get an eyeful of the shite prizes) on Thursdays and Betty-B with more karaoke on Fridays. At the weekend, Saturday afternoons see the return of the Miller Duo whilst there's a Surprise Guest Night at night - there, bet that surprised you! And that brings us round to Sunday with Tina-T on the afternoon shift and Betty-B finsihing up the weekend with yet more karaoke! Squires now have DJs every night except Monday (which is their promotion night). Particularly popular seems to be Stella on a Sunday with sounds from the 70s, 80s and 90s. She also hosts a Quiz Night on Wednesday. There's a happy hour every evening from 11pm-midnight and all day Sunday! Up at Glassford Street, Bennets have a PA by Nikki French on Sunday 28th January when the DJ is Jon Fraser and all beers and spirits will be ukp1.25. Next month, there's a St Valentine's Night Party on the 14th with vodka and gin both at 70p - and that includes mixer! Joshua, Glasgow's up and coming new sensation will be appearing in the club on Sunday 25th February. That about wraps it up for this month. Play safe! Russia I am looking for advice on the best way to write this book, which will be called "Me+Me". This stands for "looking for one of my kind". I want to have answers for the following questions: What is the best way to illustrate it: with comics or colour photographs? Do you think there are any people outside Russia who would be willing to translate and publish this book? Will it be interesting for you to read about peculiarities of the Russian gay community? When you read such a book, are you looking for answers on questions such as: how to find a lover, how to be faithful, how to support the relationship with the one you love? Are you comfortable with being gay? What do you need to feel comfortable? Have you discussed gay issues with your friends/relative? Did they understand you? Many people feel lonely and think that nobody needs them. Have you thought about trying to understand other people better? Do your way of living, your profession, your interests, etc. match your sexual orientation? Were they determined by it? Shortly about myself. I'm in mature age. I have a dog. I love circus, movies, music. I have many students. I'm well known among gays in Moscow and Russia. My address is Russia 107014, Moscow, POB 1001, Vladimir Shahidjanjan.
