Where to meet: from bookshops and cafes to pubs and clubs; Who to meet: from every corner of Scotland to every corner of the globe in our increasingly popular Meet Market. Suck it and see! TALK OUT Edinburgh is known as the city of fur coat and no knickers - a reference to the importance of keeping up appearances at all costs. Now, it seems that some of the good burghers are intent on taking this attitude to its logical conclusion. In a city which is as sex obsessed as any other, the physical manifestations must be swept under the carpet. And Fantasies, Scotland's only licensed sex shop, looks as if it could be the next victim. You see, it's OK if the city's burgeoning commercial sex scene goes on in grubby and guilty surroundings, but the second that anybody attempts to be upfront and honest about what they are doing, then the tongues start wagging. Vince Delicato makes no bones about the establishment he runs. It is a sex shop. It sells sex toys, sex videos and sex magazines. If the law was sensible, he might even sell sexier toys, videos and magazines! But now an unholy coalition of superstitionists and local residents are complaining that the sex shop is bringing the wrong sort of people into the area. The local mosque, the Methodist church, a housing association, the Royal College of Surgeons and even Edinburgh University are getting in on the act. The Methodists claim that the shop is "unwelcome in a student area and so close to the Festival Theatre". The Muslims say "that the presence of the shop makes them uncomfortable". The Surgeons, who have 70 families living nearby, state that "some of our ladies have been approached in the street by people presumably brought into the area by the sex shop". Well, the students and Festival Theatre ain't complaining. Who gives a fuck about the superstitious sensibilities of the Christians or Muslims? And the Surgeons are making big presumptions about the people who have allegedly accosted their "ladies" - perhaps they were really brought into the area by the mosque, the Festival Theatre or that dangerous hotbed of liberal perverts: Edinburgh University. In the months that it has been open, Fantasies has proved a low key but popular shop (despite the Evening News and Scotsman refusing to take their advertising). Its customers are, by and large, those with a positive attitude to sex and sexuality - not the sort of people who get their kicks from hassling local women in the street. If you live in Edinburgh and have used Fantasies (and even if you haven't), why not drop a note to your local councillor asking them to support the renewal of the sex shop's licence? The anti-sex lobby is well organised. We just have to be better organised. After all, we have right on our side. John Hein --------------------------------------------------------- aberdeen ======== Well, it's that time again, time for me to let all you lowlanders know what you're missing by not living in the cultural timewarp of Aberdeen. It has come to my attention that certain sections of the lesbigay community feel that I am forever slagging off the scene up here and continuously portray a very negative image of the city. Believe me, I would greatly love to write about a scene lacking in the cliqueiness that exists up here. I would love to write about a gay scene that did not die the death at midnight. I would love to write about a scene where the combined clientele of both clubs actually reached double figures on weekdays. I would love to write about a gay scene whose up and coming pretty young things did not beleive that gay life existed only for two hours on two nights a week. I would love to write about the young dancy crowd bopping away to the latest sounds, instead of the handbag crap that they themselves keep requesting. OK, so I keep slagging the scene off for being stuck in a rut. Perhaps if I slag it long enough, and hard enough, some of you might start to be trend setters, and drag us all out of the rut which we now seem more than happy to be in. People used to come up from Edinburgh and Glasgow for a weekend in Aberdeen because they could hear music which had never been heard outside London. Come back Alan Sadler, you were right, the scene was wrong. Play it til they dance to it, if they don't dance to it keep playing it til they do and if anybody so much as dares to request VOGUE, tell them to FUCK RIGHT OFF and get a life!!! - If it has to be advancement by coercion, so be it. Talking of big Al, most of you are probably aware that he is currently getting a large dancy gay following at Joy. Still no answers forthcoming about why Mr Gay UK is not being held here this year. How come Dundee can do it and we can't? Last year's was a big success. Why is such a money spinner not being repeated this year? Oops! Seems somebody got a bit upset at my reporting of rumours circulating the scene in my last update. The crap that's going around up here is so ridiculous, I can't imagine anybody taking any of it seriously and even His Grippiness can laugh off remarks relating to his sanity, although I think that somebody with his dress sense has simply got to be a danger to society. Due to the changes at Ally Dawsons, some of the lesbian crows have returned there. Will the pool table mysteriously disappear again? Finally, Aberdeen saw a lesbian wedding this month: complete with Humanist service, photos, cake, and formal dress for quite a few. Congratulations to the happy couple! Is The Pink now available for funerals, baptisms and Barmitzvahs too? Minerva -------------------------------------------------------------------- dundee ====== Well it's Hi from Bonny Dundee once more and it seems like only yesterday that Herr Editor was asking for my last report so what on earth can I fill this column with? I checked out the new nightclub Liberty's one Friday night and I have to reluctantly admit that I was impressed with the standard of the club. It's certainly as good as anything you'll find in Edinburgh or Glasgow, unfortunately it has bar prices to match. Attendance appears to be very good even on Thursday and Friday nights and the club is now providing live entertainment on various dates which recently included a drag act. I will try to find out what is planned in time for my next report. Contrary to popular rumour, Club Cruise is still open on Saturday nights. However I am unsure whether it is being supported enough for it to survive much longer. Hopefully it will keep its head above water as it is always nice to have a choice of venue (especially when trying to avoid ex-lovers and such like!) The next Women's Disco is on Friday 5th April, 8-12pm at Sinatra's which is just up Princes Street from the Wellgate Shopping Centre. The disco is always well attended and the bar prices very reasonable. Well worth a visit if you haven't already been along. This brings me to the Women's Resource Centre which opened last summer. It is a voluntary run centre by women for women which operated various activities throughout the year including a regular Saturday morning 'drop in' from 10am-12noon. This is also the best time to phone for information on any meetings/social events. The centre is a child friendly environment and is located at 2nd Floor, 5 West Bell Street, Dundee. Phone no. 01382 205308. Last but not least, Deva's is still picking up from the January hangover and the all female group Diva have performed several gigs recently. They really are a good night's entertainment so it's your loss if you've missed them. Do try to catch them next time they're on. Major renovations are being carried out around mid April so keep your ears to the ground as the bar may be closed for a short while. Also the bar is now closed on Sunday nights as naebody seems to want to come out to play. We wish Karen loads of good wishes with the alterations and look forward to the new look. PS. Can anyone tell me anything about Trash at the Tay Hotel? Jol -------------------------------------------------------------------- edinburgh ========= John is not too pleased with me again, for yet another time my copy is late for the printers (that is an understatement! - Ed). That's what you get for juggling a job and final exams whilst trying to keep up a social life so that you have enough gossip to put in this. I'll start with everyone's favourite late night haunt, CC Blooms. It was really amusing when some of the lights behind the downstairs bar stopped working, and they had to put on some spare ones that were linked to bright pink and blue neon tubes. Not only did it add some wonderful tackiness to the whole place, but it made it so bright that you could see so much easier than normal: brilliant if you wanted to avoid bumping into things, but not so good if you like lurking in the dark corners or your face looks like the back end of a bus (not that Edinburgh has such people of course). Not that that stopped me, thanks Scott (grin). Karen Dunbar's first Stars in your Eyes seemed to have been a victim of the Queens being struck with stage fright, and not as many people came forward as hoped, but the normal karaoke still made the night as auspicious as normal. Let's hope more people pluck up the courage to have a bash next time. A benefit at Taste, the weekly dance club 'for extroverts and perverts' recently raised over ukp500 for Milestone House. The night was dedicated to the memory of Dougie 'Hazel' Cowen who died from an AIDS related illness at the hospice on 27th January. One of the original Taste members, he often travelled up from London to come to the club. He was also an on-line regular at Lambda Board. A nice guy - much missed. Route 66 is still offering its lovely pub atmosphere, its pints slipping down like a dream - so do their G & T's, but I wouldn't know about that. There's nothing like popping in for a quiet drink and grabbing a fist full from the ample selection of reading material, including lovely free copies of ScotsGay of course. One thing that does puzzle me though, why does the walled seating at the back right have a gale blasting out from it - just avoid sitting on the crack, unless you happen to like having wind put up your jaxie. That lovely nest for the extreme fashion conscious, Cafe Kudos, is still pulling in a nice and relaxed crowd. I even managed to get round to having something to eat this time. I wasn't too hungry, so I just had a sandwich, but it was a huge plateful. The cappuccino helped wash it all down - very satisfying! It is definitely one of the places to be seen, and to people watch. I was in work one day, and I got an e-mail from someone called Robert, it was a bit cryptic, and I couldn't tell if someone was trying to pull me, or if it was Mr. Editor (aka John) having his insider contacts chat to me. It turned out to be the latter (damn!) and I was asked to pop in to Over The Rainbow for lunch one day. I still haven't managed to get round to it yet, but I have had dinner in there a few times and I must say that it has been excellent. The food is just right up my street, and the service is always friendly and informal. I wasn't too sure about the Blue Moon's table service idea at first, but they seem to be coping rather well, although if you just want a drink, you'd be better popping next door to the Buzz Bar. There is Maggie's night out next door in the Buzz Bar every now and then, but of course I haven't been able to get into that, not being a lady and all. Any of you lovely dears out there want to tell me what it's like? The New Town Bar is doing a good trade, drawing some of the friendliest people on the scene. Every time I have popped in lately, the manager has looked awfully busy behind the bar, serving up the punters' drink (and nicely priced too), so I haven't had a chance to chat to him this time around, next time hopefully. Unfortunately that's all I have got this time around, I'll have a lot more up and coming events next time, by then I should have got over my mad rush to revise for my finals, and I'll be able to relax a bit. I overheard someone criticising the Edinburgh scene the other day, saying it was awfully cliquey and I couldn't help but wade in and say it's not, obviously he has just been talking to the wrong people, or maybe he was just a boring fart, I dunno. Anyway, just keep on having a good time guys and gals, Be Safe, and I'll see you next time - on time for once!. Marcc --------------------------------------------------------------------------- glasgow ======= Hi from the Holy City once again! Well, it's been a busy four weeks since I last had the pleasure of addressing you! Down at Madame Gillespies, young Brendan Nash didn't stay long as manager and has headed through to Jessieburgh to attend to Eat Out. Glasgow's loss, I say! Although it may not be of too much interest to Glaswegians who have homes to go to, there's a new gay friendly hotel/hostel just opened up in the centre of town which should put Glasgow firmly on the backpacker route again! Berkeley Globetrotters, at Charing Cross, offers accommodation from ukp6.50 per night! To be recommended, if only for the showers which are like something out of the infamous Trades Hotel in Blackpool! Then, there's the new women only bar in what was GHQ's cafe. That's really something that has been overdue in Scotland - although we'll probably get a lot of moaning from guys who feel oppressed by one small bar not being open to them! Wonder if they'll give the redoubtable Ms Dunbar a job as bouncer? An all round entertainer if ever there was one, Big Karn has been fair packing them in at GHQ on Wednesday nights with her 'Not Just A Quiz Night'. But the thing that has been getting everyone all het up (ooh, er!) has been the showing of the new series of Taggart which was filmed in the city by STV. Frankly, I stopped watching Taggart years ago when Stuart 'Vanessa' Hepburn was written out, but the first episode of Angel Eyes last week had me and the SO playing 'Spot the Location' and 'Who Can We Recognise In The Crowd Scenes?'. A very creditable piece of work from gay writer Glenn Chandler who was responsible for the three-parter. What a change it makes seeing REAL lesbigay characters in a mainstream TV programme! Roll on Thursday for the next episode! Recently, I attended the Civic Reception in the City Chambers in honour of the Glasgow Gay and Lesbian Centre. Everybody seemed to be there, ranging from actor Richard Wilson to various has-been's and might-be's from the world of lesbigay politics. It was nice to hear a positive and pragmatic speech from the Mayor of Manchester who was guest of honour. But I felt that the speech from a Glasgow councillor, deputising for our Provost, was a little bit off target. I mean, do we really need to be told that the Centre is going to be the best thing since sliced bread for the heterosexual population of Glasgow? I think not! OK, it's very nice of the Council to give money to the Centre, but why the hell did they never get it together to implement equal opportunities employment policies for their employees? Water under the bridge now, I suppose, as the Council has only another week to live before local government reorganisation sends it the way of Glasgow Corporation. Over at Bennets, I suppose the upcoming biggy has to be the Glasgow heat of Mr Gay UK on the 5th of April. After Taggart, Scottish Television seems to be turning into quite a little hotbed of queerdom - how else did the decidedly cute Terry George manage to get the event so extensively plugged on Late Edition? Be that as it may, I hear that so much interest is being shown that you'll have a hard time squeezing into the club that night. Will a Glasgow lad win the title? I don't see why not! There are an awful lot of braw Scottish laddies out there - both in kilts and out of them! Och, Aye! The only problem is that some of our better looking hunks, whilst being quite willing to tart it around the scene, are a bit shy when it comes to actually getting up on stage and showing us all what they're made of. The ukp100 first prize for the heat may help. Damn it, I might almost go in for it myself if I get a few pints down me first! Not that I'd win, of course! But that about wraps it up for this month. Damn it, I never did manage to get down to Club X as promised. Next month, perhaps?
