See who's for the taking! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRIDE SCOTLAND - JUNE 22ND 1996 The first lesbian, gay and bisexual pride event of the year is to be held in Glasgow on 22nd June 1996. The Pride Scotland annual march and festival is set to turn the Clyde pink this year in Scotland's largest city. Over 6000 lesbians, gay men and bisexuals are expected to bring city centre Glasgow to a standstill accompanied by drumming, whistle blowing, banner waving and chants as this year's march works its way to Glasgow Green. Two stages, two health promotional tents, two bars and an array of market stalls are just part of Scotland's only pride festival. "Lesbian, gay and bisexual pride is about the celebration of queer unity and diversity. It is important that our community recognises the diverse national identities as well as diverse sexualities. Pride Scotland celebrates the unique contribution of Scottish lesbians, gays and bisexuals to the struggle for queer emancipation." Peter Tatchell, Outrage ASSEMBLY FOR THE MARCH begins at 10.30am at Blythswood Square. Bring along your banners, balloons, badges, whistles, drums, girlfriends, boyfriends, grannies, and anything else you can think of! The march will set off at 11.00am sharp, and follow a route along West George Street, Renfield Street, Union Street, Jamaica Street, Clyde Street and then cross the Saltmarket into Glasgow Green, arriving at around 12.30pm. There is an access point at the Gay & Lesbian Centre (Clyde Street entrance) for those who would like to join the march there, and a wheelchair-accessible minibus will follow the march for anyone who needs it. Dress it up, camp it up, and shout yourself hoarse! WOMEN'S AREA After last year's success, the women's area has been enlarged this year. In and around the women's tent you will find market stalls, music and entertainments and, due to popular request, a bar! SUPPORT TENT A counselling and support service for anyone who needs it. HEALTH BOARDS' TENT Where would you expect to see video screenings on improving your sex life, find jugglers and dancers in tutus, or marvel at a pyramid? Or select freebies from the Pic'n'Mix counter before trying your luck at Tombola? Certainly not in your average Health Tent. But who said this was your average Health Tent? The four West of Scotland Health Boards have teamed up with the Strathclyde HIV & AIDS Network to provide the Health Tent, and the range of attractions are simply amazing - you'll find all of the above and more... and it's all free. CRECHE A free facility for 2-8 year-olds. OPEN STAGE One of the focal points of the day, the stage will be entertaining us from 12.30pm through til 8pm. See the listing over the page for full details. MARKET STALLS AREA More stalls than ever with a wide variety of goods and services on offer, as well as campaigning groups and organisations looking for your support. COMMUNITY HEALTH TENT Here's where you'll find organisations from all over the country working in the fields of health and community services, including switchboards, HIV/AIDS services and general health groups. INFORMATION TENT The place to come for Pride membership leaflets, information about anything on the site and of course your wonderful Pride T-Shirts! As requested, more toilets this year with more disabled units available, the Beer Tent this year will be provided by GLC Cafˇ-Bar, and vegetarian (and carnivorous) food will be served all day. Pride desperately needs volunteers on the day (and before), so if you'd like to help out, phone Dougie on 0131-556 8822. All the details about the day can also be found on the Internet at http://www.scotsgay.co.uk/pride/ It's going to be one hell of a show this year on the open stage which forms the centrepiece of the festival. Pride are continuing their tradition of showcasing new Scottish talent, and are complementing this with some of the finest sounds around. Just have a look at this... Helen Reeves - bringing her country rock'n'roll band to Pride before heading to America to get famous. Rubyfruit - colourful, boppy, poppy duo for whom record label success beckons. Harley Loudon - Ethereal torchsong siren takes blues all the way to ambient and beyond. Cicero - 90s Eurobeat. After chart success with the Pet Shop Boys ("Love is Everywhere"), his new single "Don't Worry" is out now. Frocks - Talented four-piece from Liverpool with a unique and introspective indie sound. In 2 Deep - Rapidly up-and-coming Glasgow band mixing soul and dance to great effect. Lucy Raye - Mellow sounds from this very popular London based singer-songwriter. Euphony - Scottish techno dance outfit, who will be hitting us with their new single "Time and Space". Long Fin Killie - Acoustic insanity verging on dub madness Lorna Brookes - Brilliant and powerful acoustic solo artist. Steve Sneddon - Pride favourite with talent to spare returns to sing in his home city. Mary Kiani - Scottish dance diva whose hits include "I give it all to you", "When I call your name" and "Let the music play." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ABERDEEN -------- Welcome once more from the grotty city, Saturday comes around once again, and I'm faced with another agonising decision. Do I get showered and shaved, and iron my best party frock, ready for an exciting night out on the Aberdeen scene, or do I watch the EuroVision Song Contest, and get my copy for InsideOut written up at the same time? No contest!! I know which is by far the most exciting. By the way, did you see Gina G's legs? Sorry dear, but wear a longer frock next time, like ankle length! Pins like that look good on Eoin Jess, but they're definitely not you sweetie! Mind you, I've just watched one of the entries, and I could have sworn it was Rita from Coronation Street that was singing! Well, just when we thought that the gay scene was crawling out of the rut it had been in since last year, everything dies the death again. Aberdeen is down to only one gay venue, after the decision to close the Pink Flamingo. Grippy Graham has finally decided to pull the plug and move to Glasgow. The Pink will be re-opening as a straight venue, under a new name and new ownership. This leaves the city with one club and no gay pub. I really cannot believe the lack of a gay scene up here. At one stage we had two clubs and one pub, now we're left with one club, and even that is not as full as it should be. If Aberdeen wants to have any gay scene whatsoever, it's time we got ourselves out and about a lot more. Right now, there's hardly any gay life except for a couple of hours at the weekend, and that's not enough for clubs to survive. You'd better start using what's left a lot more, or Aberdeen could end up with nothing at all. The way this city is going, we're going to end up like one of those places where there's one disco every second Tuesday of the month. Don't laugh, you didn't believe me when I predicted the demise of Flannies, you didn't believe me when I predicted one of the clubs would close. My third prediction is that as more people drift away from the gay scene, they will be replaced with straights. This is already happening, if you don't believe me, just look at what's going on around you right now. I love the bitching going on between Sweden and Norway on the EuroVision Song Contest just now. Good as you'll get in any gay bar! Another of the rats deserting the S.S. Aberdeen (S.S. = Sinking Ship) is my good self, after years of pleading, arse-licking and finally having to sleep with the boss, I've at last managed to get myself transferred back down south, and will also be heading towards Glasgow in a month's time. This means that this will be my last time writing about the scintillating, exciting, vibrant, wonderful, cosmopolitan oil capital of Europe which we all know and love! (well, somebody out there must think so). Frankly, I'll be glad to see the back of this Marie Celeste city, and offer my condolences to you all at having to stay during its slow but inexorable slide into oblivion, while I look forward to returning to the brilliant gay scene of my home town. As luck would have it, ScotsGay are needing somebody to cover the Glasgow scene, and I shall be doing this after I move back down. I'm already looking forward to actually having something to write about!! So, as Minerva packs up her frock and minces off into the sunset, what lucky cow will be taking my place? His Royal Heinous the Editor asked me to come up with a suitable candidate, but despite having had my thinking tiara on for the past week, I can't think of anybody. The problem is, it takes time and effort, and you don't get paid. The scene up here is apathetic. They don't give a shit about anyone but themselves, and I've not been able to think of one person who I think would be prepared to take the time and effort to fill my ruby slippers. Come on Aberdeen, somebody prove me wrong!! If you want the job, phone ScotsGay and ask. Think of all the (is this really Morten Harket on EuroVision? I remember when he was the most shaggable thing on Earth, after me of course. Poor dear is looking a bit old now. Obviously me and Gloria Hunniford know a bit more about putting on the slap than he does) advantages of writing for ScotsGay. Free entry to the clubs (thought it was club? - Ed.). If you're a really pushy cow, you might stretch this to a few free drinks, coz pub and club owners are scared that you'll slag them off in print. Being a celebrity, everybody wants to sleep with you, and sweep you off to exotic places, as happened to Marcc being jetted off to Wolverhampton for a good knobbing! You'll have crowds asking for your autograph, and the silly tarts will happily pay a tenner for a Polaroid photo of you and them kissing (30 quid if you put the tongue in). The glitterati always have the prettiest people around them, and you'll soon get used to the door staff rushing out to greet you as you pull up outside the Caberfeidh in the stretch limo. Then of course there's the endorsements. A nice little versace frock, and all you have to do to get it is drop a few names, plug a few designer emporiums etc. Fame, Fortune, Power and a free Cloakroom Ticket could all be yours! You need to be out on the scene a lot (only at weekends in Aberdeen, coz it's closed the rest of the time). Just think, the drivel that you would be writing is seen by people all over the world, and it's picked up by an average 47,985,145,764,214,649,096, 456,237,211,104,267 people a day surfing the Internet (isn't that a bloody stupid term, 'surfing'? Why not 'trampolining', or why not 'skateboard' the Internet? You sad people you!) Talking of the Internet, there was this Australian guy who'd read ScotsGay saying how he liked my writing (told you about the fame). Anyway, at this time nobody in Scotland had seen ScotsGay, coz all the copies were held up in the postal strike! Right then, if that doesn't convince somebody to take over from me, then I don't know what will! Well, I'm running out of drivel, (EuroVision was crap, Ireland wasn't that good) so I'm going to leave you now. Next edition you'll have a new "scene queen" (or a blank page), and I'll be writing from Good Old Glasgow. Be seeing ya! Minerva ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- DUNDEE ------ Greetings from bonny Dundee! I have been out and about once more and for any of you who are even a tad bit interested I am feeling much better now. Anyway down to the business in hand, what is going on? Well, there is not really anything new to tell you about so I guess I'll have to waffle again. It is with some regret that I must tell you that Club Cruise has finally succumbed to the competition and closed its doors for the last time. I'm sure many people in Dundee will miss the Saturday nights in Cruise. Small but never seedy, Cruise served the gay community for a long time and gained many regulars who enjoyed meeting their friends in a relaxed atmosphere with friendly and efficient bar staff, not forgetting the reasonable bar prices. The DJ talent of Jan will also be missed and let us hope that he will pop up somewhere else. R.I.P. Club Cruise and thankyou for the memories. The planned refurbishment of Deva's has not yet materialised. However, they've been open for business recently on Sundays so get on down there. It was disappointing to see such a lack of support at the recent lingerie party organised by Karen for her regulars. It's no good moaning that nothing is happening if you don't support things when they are. Okay, maybe sexy knickers are not necessarily your thing but it was a fun evening and good for a few giggles. The Women's Resource Centre that I mentioned a couple of months ago is currently closed due to difficulties with the building but they are still organising events so give them a ring for details or look out for their leaflets at the women's disco. There is also a party night being held at the Weaver's Arms in Princes Street on Friday 7th June, 8pm-1am. There will be music from the 60's and 70's along with various games, and entrance is ukp2 or ukp1 if you come along in fancy dress. This event is to fill the gap before the next disco which is on the 16th August and it is being organised by the women's disco group. The group is also looking for new members to input some new ideas into women's events. So if you are interested come along to the party night and introduce yourself. Well that's about it for now but if you know of anything else that is happening in the Dundee area drop us a line and tell us about it. Jol ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- EDINBURGH --------- Another few weeks, another exciting time out on the Edinburgh scene, well, maybe. It was a bit dead last night until later, but I guess that's because there were so many of you watching Gina G strut her stuff on EuroVision. Not that I think that's sad or anything, honest. So, what's been happening? Looks like Picardy's days are numbered, the 'To Let' sign has appeared outside... But a tight lipped El Raymondo says that he's got new premises lined up. We shall see. I see that CC's has a novelty act for the punters - a fire drill! I was in the other night - it did seem pretty full - and the fire brigade decided to pop round for a visit too. Mind you, the Heid Fire Fighter did look as if somebody had had at least one too many!!! It brought a smile to my face anyway, but that's because I just thought they looked kinda hunky J. The new 1am curfew doesn't seem to be affecting the place that much, it just means that, come ten to, the place has a sudden tide of people rushing in. There have been loads of rumours about what's happening to Route 66's new extension. Stevie tells me that the Brewery were going to spend oodles of dosh on buying the derelict building next door and doing it up. However, New Labour's City Council Planning Department did the dirty and the Brewery pulled out of the deal but are going to spend some of the money they've saved on a refurb for the existing premises. Other than that, Route 66 seems to be plodding along as normal. There will be a few plodders in (with sore feet too) on 9th June as they're hosting the do for the Crusaid Walk for Life. I took one of my straight mates into the place one afternoon, after having a nice dinner at the Blue Moon, and his only comment was, "Why do all the ladies in the drawings on the walls have huge derri¸res?". (I think it has something to do with the fashion of the time, Mike! I mean, some people looking back at now might comment, "Why do all the guys look like waifs?".) We're not all waifs though - I'm told that the Four BBBB's Club (Scotland) - the club for the bearish and full of figure - is teaming up with BCUK and Bearhug to hold the Scottish heat of Mr Bear UK in Intense, under the New Town Bar on 28th June. Entry forms are available from the bar or from PO Box 12785, Edinburgh, EH7 5YD. I wonder if that fat bastard of an editor of mine will enter? (Growl! - Ed). I suppose it'll make a change from the 'health and safety' videos downstairs. I didn't managed to get to the new Orange club at the Mercado, but one of my mates seemed to have a good time, well, he was certainly throwing up enough when he dragged himself in at half four in the morning. More info on it next time, when I get my arse into gear. The other week, Scottish Television asked me to go through to their Trial by Night programme. They were discussing, amongst other things, whether or not 'Gay parents make better parents'. They asked nice Mr. Dominic D'Angelo, of Gay Scotland, to put forward the motion - but I must say that I was against. Just because yer gay, doesn't make you better parents! It doesn't make you worse than anyone else, but that's not the same. I must also say thanks to all those people who have approached me since, agreeing with my comments. Interesting to see that Dominic and my editor have a similar attitude to children. (Nah, I'd fill up the barrels with brine! - Ed). I have never been in the Blue Moon so much in my life before, all these people wanting to take me out for eats, it's great. One thing I have noticed when doing this, is that the food varies in quality from day to day. I guess it must be the different cooks, or they're subject to massive mood swings. It's sad that Joy has packed up its handbag at the New Calton and hasn't found anywhere to go yet. But I'm sure that Alan and Maggie will soon find someone to take them in - maybe even in George Street? Anyway, I must be off now, I'm starving, and the Ed is probably having kittens (Full grown pumas, dear! - Ed) wondering where on earth his copy has gone. So, I'll chat to you next time. Bye. PS: Oh NO!!! Gina G is number one! (Argh). Marcc. X marcc@presence.co.uk ------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLASGOW ------- Hi from the Holy City once again! Ho, hum, and a fairly desultory month it's been. What with the flu, a dose of the crabs and exams and things, I've not been out as much as I might. Poor mwa, I suppose the highlight of the month has been the gala opening on 27th May of Glasgow's first bookshop for lesbians, gays and bisexuals in the GGLC. It's called, accurately enough, Centre Books and is run by Pulse's Gordon Gosnell and Joseph Canavan from Trongate Books. Whilst the brightly lit shop is full of all the stuff you can get everywhere else (more expensively and in hetty surroundings), they sell stuff which isn't available anywhere else in Scotland. They also have their own web site (http://www.scotsgay.co.uk/cbooks/). In addition to new and second hand books, the shop has an ample selection of mags and videos. Something for everyone - especially if you're into bears and mature men although twink lovers are definitely not forgotten!!! There's also a well chosen stock of lesbian material. Talking of which, I gather that Sappho's, the new women only bar in what used to be Eat Out (and then became the GHQ Caff) has been packing them in. As far as I'm aware, it's the first of its kind in Scotland and is proving very popular with women who want some space of their own. Even Bobby Gibson has wisely been limiting himself to a two second stint behind the bar before anybody notices the beard. Young Bobby (who most definitely MUST enter for Mr Bear UK) tells me that Bennets is due for a major refurb soon. It doesn't seem like 6 years since it was last done - but then, there have been lots of little changes over the years. One of the big changes will be lowered ceilings - but not to Bobby's height or he and me will be the only ones that can get in! Apologies to the plumptious Brian 'Li Vell' Levey for spelling his name wrong last issue. He didn't say anything to me, but I was driving past his dad's former jewellery shop in Edinburgh the other day and noticed that the old sign had an extra 'e'. Like father, like son! At Madame Gillespies, I note that there has been yet another change of management. The cuddly Robin Sykes claims that his new company has taken the place over from Premiere Cuisine Limited. Although it's now only open four nights a week, I gather that the place is reasonably busy of late with a diet of cabaret and PA's attracting the usual crowd. PA's in the coming month are said to include: Kym Mazell, Bomshell and Damian. The eaterie attached to the club, La Cage, is doing breakfasts on Saturday/Sunday for those of you who need something greasy after something water soluble! Sorry to hear that the exquisite Dougie Hosslefluff from Pride Scotland managed to crack his elbow on Railtrack's best marble in Queen Street Station whilst desperately trying to escape back to Edinbugger from a Pride meeting in the GGLC. That'll fair knacker his sex life for a month or so! He tells me that Pride is desperate for more Glasgow based help - not only do they need stewards on the day, but trying to run the whole event from Edinburgh is proving to be a bit tiresome. It's interesting to note that most of the people behind Pride Scotland are English - and damned welcome they are here too! It's a disgrace when we Scots can't get it together to do things for ourselves - and we really think we're fit for self government? Don't make me laugh! Enough of the political rant! Down at the Waterloo last Monday, Big John was in good form for the first in what Cal tells me he hopes will be a series of Party Nights. It certainly livened the shop up. I see that some of the noon-7pm promotional drinks prices have gone up, but at ukp1.30 for lager and special, ukp1.40 for 80/- (with the flavoured vodka still at ukp1 and a double vodka and mixer still at ukp2) it's a bargain! Finally, I understand that Crusaid, despite some rather dodgy sponsorship from drug and tobacco firms, is firmly looking forward to its Walk For Life on 9th June. It's not too late to get involved: phone 0500 011696 or look at their web site at http://www.crusaid.org.uk/ for details. Not got an Internet account yet? It's time to phone up these awfully nice folk at Direct Connection - suppliers of Internet Access to the Gayletariat! Not got a computer? Hmm. Problem! Well, that winds up my column for this issue and for good. It seems that I'm getting the bum's rush now that Minerva is moving down from Aberdeen - what has she got that I haven't? To all of the people I've met whilst I've been on the job, especially the pub and club owners of the city, I'd like to say a big 'thank you' for making my job easier. I suppose I'll have to pay for my own drink now - unless the editor intends to send me up to Aberdeen. (Wouldn't wish that on anyone, not even on you! - Ed). That's it then, it's been nice writing for you. And I never did manage to get down to Club X - not even for Joy!
