A lot has happened since then. Many of the goals set by the early UK gay liberationists have been met or are in sight although many remain far distant. But visibility is our major achievement. Who would have thought, 30 years ago, that our sexuality would be celebrated on TV in programmes such as Queer As Folk or that over 5,000 queers would walk down Princes Street? And, who would have thought that we would ever see out gay MSPs (or a Scottish Parliament, for that matter)? In publicly declaring their sexuality, LibDems Iain Smith and Keith Raffan are to be congratulated. However, Iain doesn't see it quite like that and says that he's always been out and, in a sense, that's true - he has never hidden it from party members and is no stranger to the scene. But it's a lot easier to be out and proud once you've been elected in the first place! Some people think that acceptance will arrived when a candidate for the local council in Invershin can put "Lives with bf and three cats" on his leaflets and romp home in the polls. To me, that's accepting a rather straight definition of what it is to be gay. I await the day when somebody can get elected after telling the electorate not only that they're bisexual, but also enjoy public sex environments and look forward to a romp on Clapham Common and, furthermore, that they have no intention whatever of consulting a psychiatrist about it! John Hein --------------------------------------------------------------------------- STUDENTS VIOLATE AGREEMENT ========================== Fetish club Violate has been kicked out of a Glasgow Students' Union before even having the chance to hold an event there. Strathclyde Union had agreed to let their Dark Room out to the popular pansexual club for two dates in June and August but have now reneged on the deal. According to Violate, "Just after we had finished putting out all the publicity, we had a phone call from a member of the Union committee saying that they did not want a fetish club at the Union. This is despite the booking being made a month ago under the name Violate and it being explained exactly what it was." "All our other dates will still be going ahead and as soon as we can we will let everyone know. We are sorry to cancel at such short notice but we are even more sorry that an organisation such as a student union isn't willing to host such an event." Violate had described their new venue as "dark, private and sexy, with a cheap bar, secure entry and changing areas". Violate organiser Bunny told ScotsGay, "It came as quite a surprise - they seem to be a bit of a tossless bunch. What on earth do they think they were elected for?". When ScotsGay attempted to contact the Union for comment, neither the outgoing President nor any member of staff bothered to return our calls. No doubt Strathclyde students and Union Life Members will be able to take the matter further! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- WARNING ======= Police are active at a cruising site at North Kessock, outside Inverness. What a month for the girls! Tales of Radcliffe Hall's tragic inverts came to the fore in a report that wouldn't have looked out of place in the fifties. The Scottish Daily Mail reported: "A middle-aged gym mistress was yesterday accused of preying upon her younger female colleagues to satisfy her sexual cravings." The dastardly "Mary Collins, 41, a college head of sport and leisure" was dismissed from her college for gross misconduct. Prosecuted by the police, paraded through the court and, of course, tarred by the media. The Scottish Daily Mail emboldened the words of Mary's 'victim:' "She told me I had a great body and she had to have me. She said it is only sex. She told me I'd be sacked." Karyn Loudon, a qualified lifeguard, drinks in the Polo Lounge, used to take classes of gay swimmers and was devoted to her late brother who was gay. Whatever Karyn was looking for, I don't somehow think "Scotland's most famous lesbian trial" - as the Sunday Mail described it - was quite it! Fellow lecturer Kirsty Ewing went for a drink at the gay-friendly Tron bar with Mary Collins to confront her over her treatment of Karyn before finishing up at Mary's house - "only to be pinned down and groped. She tried to kiss me." The Sunday Mail made quite clear that 29-year-old Karyn - or "Miss Loudon" - was at one time "confused about her own sexuality." The fact that the alleged assault "lasted 40 minutes" surprised me as much as the Sunday Mail's Melanie Reid who blasted: "I mean, COME ON! Shrinking violets? Those two?" Neatly skipping over the contribution the Sunday Mail has made to Scotland's "buttoned-up" society, she declared it: "Lesbianism in small-town Scotland. A sad tale of people in turmoil about their own sexuality. It's a story of misunderstanding and malice. Of a buttoned-up society in which folk are so bad at asserting themselves or expressing themselves that they end up in court. With the rest of the world laughing at their expense." Meanwhile, in The Guardian, Stella Duffy berated "halfway lesbians" as "sexual tourists" and Californian lawyer Anne Menasche launched her new book 'Leaving The Life' on lesbians turning straight. She found in her sample of ex-lesbians that 48% did so because they wanted to fit in better with the heterosexual majority! If Karyn Loudon wanted to be portrayed a sexual victim, she could do no better then have a little chat with the Daily Record's rotweiler reporter, Vivienne Aitken. She is rather good at it. After writing my feature on Iain MacDonald's encounter with Charles Kumar in a Glenrothes 'cottage,' I remember her screaming down the phone at me, insisting young Charles wasn't gay, only the 'victim' of "evil" Iain MacDonald. That was before the Daily Record helped the case to court where Iain was sent down for 18 years. Charles went on to give The Scotsman a fairly candid interview about the difficulties he encountered 'coming out.' Ms Aitken found Karyn, "now a whisper of the fun-loving girl she was 12 months ago. wringing a tissue in her hands," a victim of: "lesbian sex abuse." Fortunately, the Beak didn't quite see it the same way. It ended in a 'not proven' verdict and everyone lived to see another day. In another blow for the girls, the Daily Record took a swipe at tennis star "Stefi Graf-Zeppelin... She says the arm wrestlers like Mary Pierce and Venus Williams will eventually take over from grace and finesse players, like Russia's unexploded sex grenade Anna Kournikova and that wee Swiss chocolate Martina Hingis. But what would thunder thighs Steffi know about grace and finesse. She used to roll over the pit pat girlies like a panzer." The writer finished up commenting: "it must be time for her to retire and have some babies." Collect your P45 on the way out, will you, sonny? ooo No wonder Scotland is so uncomfortable with sexuality. We must get it from our peers! "The prime minister is concerned about appointing (Scottish-born) Carol Ann Duffy as poet laureate because she is a lesbian." announced the Scottish Sunday Times. "Too lesbian," thought Danny O'Rourke in the Sunday Herald, derisive of the chosen Poet Laureate, "Middle England," Andrew Motion. "Most of his books are (deservedly) out of print," he sniped. Carol Ann Duffy lives with fellow poet Jackie Kay and they have a baby. "One of Duffy's finest poems, Poet For Our Times, excoriates the pretensions and hypocrisies of tabloid journalism." That makes Carol Ann my choice for Scotland! Women who leave their husbands, setting up home with someone else are two-a-penny these days; not likely to earn a full page in the Scottish Daily Mail with bold headers and colour pictures! Unless, of course the wife leaves him for "a rugby-playing WPC." A woman with "cropped black hair and legs that could kick-start a jumbo jet." The word lesbian is not mentioned once, but they didn't have to. "The tiny rural settlement of Mouswald in Dumfriesshire" otherwise offering "a safe and sleepy lifestyle." was now "awash with rumour and scandal." Oh, this septic isle! I've been posted a collection of cuttings from Bedfordshire On Sunday by a reader of the Scottish Media Monitor website who wanted to assure me that sexual repression was not just confined to Scotland. Amongst them was St James' Lower School, jointly run by the Church of England and local authorities in Biddenham where headmistress Victoria Burrowes immediately expelled a seven-year-old boy after accusing him of "touching another boy's trousers." At Bedford Library, staff found the sight of exposed male genitalia "obscene" and ordered the removal of Michael Croker's painting. The Bishop of Bedford is to have a casting vote on the future of four council employees who accessed erotica on the Internet whilst using works computers at home. And at Clarendon Street shelter, a church-run hostel for the homeless, Michelle Bates and Amanda Gove were banned because they were discovered to be lesbian! I've passed the cuttings on to Terry Sanderson at Gay Times; (not that he doesn't already have his work cut out)! When the Scottish Daily Mail dresses up an extremist like Gerald Warner as "a leading commentator" we know little has changed since the paper marched to the tune of Mosley's Blackshirts in the thirties. After the Bank of Scotland board finally blew the whistle on its deal with religious extremist Pat Robertson, Chief Executive, Peter Burt was ordered to fly out and tell him. Homophobe, Jack Irvine, ex-editor of the Scottish Sun went along to hold his hand. Gerald Warner - living proof that manure can grow fingers and operate a keyboard - whined in the Scottish Daily Mail: "political correctness is now the greatest threat to freedom in Scotland." Talk of the Scottish Parliament and West Lothian Council withdrawing their accounts soon had him banging his stick on the ceiling. These were "the petulant gestures of politicians indulging an obsession." He described the possibility of heads rolling at the Bank of Scotland: "grossly unfair" and our "crusade. scarcely sane." Surely, he begged, Robertson can't look "any more bizarre than the motley coalition of politically correct militants who have unravelled the deal?" Come along, Mr Warner. Time for your medication! But he wasn't going to leave without a struggle. This militant wanted to prepare his readers for a fight. "We cannot sit idly by and watch minority pressure groups and their allies secure an absurdly disproportionate profile in the media." Having compiled just how "absurdly disproportionate" every month for nearly four years. Don't lecture me, Warner! In his own column in the West Highland Free Press, Pop Macleod tried to come across as a soft old bugger. "The other day I tried to open my office-door with the remote-control key for the central locking on my car." Ah, bless! But this is no harmless old biddy. It's Donald Macleod. The Wee Free who was cleared of sexual harassment charges a while ago, and spawned The Herald's golden boy, John (gays are simply not equipped to live) Macleod. The Scrooge took a "sudden terror of human rights and civil liberties organisations" and refused to drop a few coins in a tin supporting Amnesty International. He cried: The way the "gay lobby has forced" the Bank of Scotland to "renege" on its deal "scares the living daylights out of me." Macleod believed Robertson's views "remarkably similar to what orthodox Jews, Christians and Muslims have believed for centuries." Y'r arse! Gay love was the cornerstone of monastic life. "They're shared by Scotland's eight hundred thousand Catholics, its one-and-a-half million Protestants, its two million Partick Thistle supporters and the remaining nondescripts who spend Easter Sunday in the pub or on the golf-course." My mate - a big fan of Partick Thistle - nearly choked on his Tennents when I told him. "Gays are no longer content just to have their civil rights," he wheezed. What rights? "They are giving their own sexual preference a quasi-religious status and demanding that any comment which causes them distress be treated as blasphemy. Their audacity has already yielded handsome dividends. Scotland is already a country in which homosexuals wield enormous power. They are shouting us down and denying us space. Scottish gays have tasted blood. Two thousand ministers (and the Sunday Post) to go." A regular spot to let off steam in the West Highland Free Press is not a privilege Marjory Smith of the Highland Lesbian Group enjoys. But at least they printed her letter. "Lesbian and gay people are all of the above. We are born and brought up in the same society as everyone else and - think on this - some of us also absorb and fully assimilate the same monolithic oppression, which has so sadly permeated the mind of Donald Macleod. A free spirit doesn't come in a bottle. A lesbian Catholic woman's life has been totally blighted by her amalgamation of this repression. She knows she's lesbian, but can't accept it any more than Donald Macleod. She has been in and out of mental hospital. Just when she seemed to be getting better the church got a new priest with similar understanding, caring, views to Donald Macleod's, and she's back to square one." I'm sure the Macleod's don't give a toss, Marjory! But let's congratulate The Scotsman journalist, Rab McNeil for winning the Equality Network Friend for Life Award for his part in letting people in Scotland know about Pat Robertson. If you thought editor, Rosie Boycott did a grand job turning the Daily Express into a liberal tabloid, don't forget the Scottish Daily Express has its own editor. Journalist Nick Gates asked in the tabloid, "are Bank of Scotland critics hypocrites?" Rushing to the aid of the bank's managers, he took pity on "the unfortunate wheeler dealers who thought they were just doing their jobs." It was, he thought, "most un-Christian." The arrangement with subscribers of the Christian Broadcasting Network - 11 times the population of Scotland - was dismissed as "a relatively small-scale arrangement with a television evangelist." Yeah.! Right! Also in the Scottish Daily Express, Peter McKay discovered "Sir Dirk Bogarde, who has died at 78, was a closet homosexual. Unlike movie hunks who turn into needy queens when the camera's off, Sir Dirk was no cream puff. He was a young captain at the Normandy landings." I can read this shite in any tabloid. Get your arse up to Park House, Rosie. And if he doesn't come up with anything better than some bollocks about reflecting the tastes of its Scottish readers: grab them and squeeze them in the door on your way out. ooo In a new twist to our reputation for coaxing little boys with sweeties, the Daily Record is furious that "Gay Men's Health have produced postcards explaining 'safe' ways of taking Ecstasy and Speed - which they call sweeties." It is made quite clear - in 1.7-cm bold print actually - how the organisation gets "ukp135,000 a year of public money." The Daily Record claimed a gay man handed the leaflet to them. (Thanks, mate)! Tory councillor, Daphne Sleigh thought it "about time Lothian Health reviewed their position." The tabloid reminded readers how "Gay Men's Health were criticised when their magazine, Spurt!, promoted gay sex in public and offered advice on how to pick up straight men." Actually, sweetie, they come to us! "Stunned onlookers watched in disbelief..," squealed the Sunday Mail as a "STREAKER ran on to the pitch." A cartoon rugby ball had to cover up the offending part while the tabloid got its breath back. "Incredibly, the team then let him take the CONVERSION KICK starkers to land them the points" at the match at Tranent, East Lothian. He was dismissed as a "madcap Englishman" before the tabloid found a "not-so-happy parent" to snivel: "It was disgusting. I had to put my hands over my little girls' eyes. You don't expect to see that kind of thing in public at two o'clock in the morning, never mind two in the afternoon. He could have been arrested for indecency." "We warned you of the exact day when evil pervert John Cronin would be let out of jail. Thanks to us, local mums and dads were ready and chased the sex monster to England," gloated the Scottish News of the World in support of vigilantism against sex offenders. When the Scottish Sun printed a large, clear, colour picture of the man nicknamed 'Catweazle,' "sex pest George Belmonte" and his "hideaway" in a "Dumfries-shire graveyard," it further fanned the flames of vigilantism now sweeping across Scotland. "After angry families hounded him out of his home," where police claim Belmonte was effectively under house arrest, he set up home in this graveyard before the tabloid was able to declare even his "new home targeted." What the Scottish Sun omitted to say was how a 70-strong crowd had gathered round his house and smashed the windows. And how the posters shooting up all around Kirkcudbright had forced a distressed older man bearing a resemblance to Belmonte to put a disclamatory notice in the local press. The Sunday Herald found "the bandaged windows and scattered shards of glass bear stark witness to the lawlessness which descended on Kirkcudbright." The Scottish Sun said he had "fled to local woodland." As they reduce the Daily Record building at Anderston Quay to rubble, I ask, why oh why isn't Old Mother Joan Burnie in it? New face, fresh start and all that? On the subject of "this new craze adopted by. dim young things." of "deliberately showing ones' knickers" the old harridan sniffed it's "not nice at all. It should provide perfect, unobtrusive support during the daylight hours and stay out of sight until peeled off at bedtime." Ignore her! With the opening of its new shop at Glasgow's Buchanan Galleries, we are expecting to see the full range of sleazy H&M underwear on the Scottish gay beaches this summer! Is it wise for the Daily Record to give a woman educated in a "girls-only establishment from which all men - and sex education - were excluded" the problem page? Old Mother Burnie had to have another go at TV erotica and its "false morals. Because, chums, as a direct result of programmes which are mad, bad and dangerous to watch." (And of these she included "Fat Ladies, Naked Chefs, bra-less gardeners." and "Queer As Folk.) Fewer and fewer of us are actually bothering to turn on at all." She demanded we "get enough courage to decorate our bedrooms in magnolia if we want instead of purple because a bunch of daft, effete hyphenated decorators of indeterminate sex tells us that the only colour for this year's walls is purple." Are you sure there isn't a slot in The Lady to put ye olde bagge? When you're in college harbouring "big worries" about your sexuality because you keep harking back to 14-years-old, when, absolutely blootered, you climbed in the sack and had a threesome with your mates. Here's what you don't do: Write to Old Mother Burnie at the Daily Record and let her sniff the sheets! "The trick is not to let it happen again." the old quack advised. "What you have done unfortunately is to build this one daft night into something it wasn't. Allowing it to blight your life would be really stupid, wouldn't it? Look at your pals. They've probably forgotten all about it and now you must try to do the same. So stop worrying. And ask that girl you fancy out." ooo Youngsters certainly gave the Daily Record a good talking to when Boyzone star Stephen Gatley came out. Boyzone's Shane said: "In this day and age it is no big deal. There is no problem here. We have always known about this but it didn't make any difference then and it still doesn't matter now." Referring to Stephen's boyf, Dutch star, Eloy de Jong, Ronan told them: "He and Eloy make each other really happy and nothing should stand in the way of happiness." A fan said: "He likes boys, we like boys, that's life!" Eloy said: "I grew up in family that has a free, open attitude to life. Uptight and blinkered are not words in my vocabulary." I wonder if the Daily Record will pick up on this? Normally, the Daily Record would have called upon the Sexfinder General, Father Tom Connolly to let rip a verbal fart in the face of Stephen's decision to come out. That would have sounded so feeble next to so many words of support. On the same day they even had Tommy Sheridan declaring "we've no time for bigots" and begging everyone to join him on the Pride march in Edinburgh! He told me one of the conditions of writing a column for the Daily Record was that they wouldn't tinker with it. Good on yer, Tommy! The Daily Record's Tom Brown thought "teenage girl fans. should have guessed they hadn't a chance when Stephen said last year that he missed his teddy bears." It was just the link he was looking for to wallow in the disgraceful and irresponsible expose in the Scottish News of the World, when so-called journalists successfully set up Ron Davies cruising in what Brown called "a homosexual haunt." It was just the sort of thing that encourages further violence to gay men in cruising areas. Where are we at with sex in Scotland? With the introduction of a spray "to help nail two-timing husbands" the Daily Record advised: "it glows green if traces of sex are detected." A report in the Scottish Daily Mail revealed Rev Stanley Bennie's weekly show on Isles FM, based in Stornoway is "far too rude." How do we know? We don't. Because "some of the. examples, which referred to sexual practices and organs are too outrageous to repeat in a family newspaper." I'm not sure I can repeat this in ScotsGay, but the Scottish Daily Mail did manage to reveal some of the utterly scandalous banter between Bennie and his co-host Gordon Afrin who said: "Here is a record we haven't played for a long, long, long time." Bennie replied, (look away if you don't think you can handle this): "That's because it's horny." And worse! Bennie said: "I like a nice cup of tea at night before I go to bed." And Mr Afrin replied in camp tones: "I'll make sure you get a really nice cup of tea." The Scottish Daily Mail said Isles FM bosses have asked him to tone down before finding "one shocked islander" who told them: "I was driving along listening to the show and I could not believe what I was hearing. Their comments are extremely risque and it is not just me who complained. I spoke to a guy in a petrol station in Stornoway who was also disgusted." Are they taking the piss? For full, uncensored features on OUTDOOR SEX IN GLASGOW and wild parties with the king on the ISLE OF RUM, check out the SCOTTISH MEDIA MONITOR website! http://www.bigfoot.com/~scotmedia (c) Garry Otton 1999 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE NICE BIT ============ Kicking off this month's bumper bisexual page is yet another non story of a Welsh Member of Parliament and his private life. Our very own bisexual ex-Cabinet member, Ron Davies has finally told the world what everybody knew all along. I mean come on. Encouragingly he has won the support of local Labour Party workers whose only regret is that he should have come out as bisexual years ago. Absolutely the best thing to come out of the whole business is the almost complete lack of interest in the story by most ordinary folk. Up yours then to the News of the World (again). Going from strength to strength is what could be the world's oldest bisexual group. The Edinburgh Bi Group has been at it since practically the birth of Moses and they want you involved! They meet every Thursday in the new and improving Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Centre on Broughton Street from 8pm. Of particular importance was July 1st. when the organisation of the group itself was discussed. Do you have an idea that might benefit bisexuals? Is there anything that you think the group could do better? Come along and say your piece. The 17th National Bisexual Convention (or BiCon'99 in the shorthand) is happening in Edinburgh on Friday 16th to Sunday 18th July. Organizer, Alison Rowan says: "It's a three day gathering of discussions, speakers, activism, videos, stalls, art exhibitions, parties, entertainment, outings, support and making friends." All bisexuals and their comrades are welcome at Pollock Halls for an event that for bisexuals is unsurpassed. Prices are on a sliding scale. From about ukp20 unwaged, to ukp27 for people earning under ukp12 grand a year to ukp54 for rich bastards. They even have a hardship fund, from financial surpluses at previous events, (which must be applied for in advance.) The venue, Pollock Halls is accessible to those with wheelchairs, and has an induction loop in the main hall. Your full time carer can attend the conference for free. And if that isn't enough they will even organise accommodation! So for more on this unique event, E-mail bicon99@bi.org or visit http://bi.org/~bicon/bicon99. Or you can write to their mail box, Bicon99, BM BiCon, London WC1N 3XX. I must plug the Sexual Freedom Society, who meet every Wednesday in the Moo Bar (or the Meadow Bar if you prefer) on Buccleuch Street at 7.30pm. Then they move on to the International Student Centre at 8pm. A really cool bunch of student types, it isn't a bisexual group but you won't find any biphobia here. For more information go to http://www.ed.ac.uk/~sfs or E-mail sfs@ed.ac.uk or if you're more traditional, write to 60 The Pleasance, Edinburgh, EH8 9TJ. Call the Edinburgh Bisexual Phoneline on 0131-557 3620 if you want to talk to a bisexual man or woman about anything at all. Ring Thursdays between 7.30-9.30pm. Held at the prestigious Rothes Glen Hotel near Elgin, it was born out of a conversation between the hotel owners Michael MacKenzie and Fredrick Symonds with Ian Stirling of Nairn. The months of planning and preparation which went into putting everything together were evidenced from the start. The location was perfect for such an event - a baronial-style mansion (built to resemble a slightly smaller version of Balmoral Castle), now a luxuriously appointed Country House Hotel, is set in the lush Spey countryside. The warm welcome extended by the owners of the hotel and their admirable staff put the guests at ease as they settled into their rooms after what, in some cases, had been fairly lengthy journeys. Upwards of 20 IKAS members attended - some having travelled from Switzerland, France and Belgium, with the remainder coming from the four corners of the UK. Most were meeting for the first time. The Friday evening was a formal affair and began with drinks reception in the Drawing Room; all the IKAS members attired in their finest Highland Evening Dress - Prince Charles and Montrose doublets, lace Jabots and cuffs, silver mounted sporrans, and kilt pins decorating as diverse an array of colourful tartan kilts as one could hope to see anywhere. The reception was followed by dinner in the candlelit, green and gold Dining Room where we experienced for the first time the superb, high standard cuisine which was to become the norm for the next two days. After dinner, and a lengthy photo session on the grand staircase, it was Scottish Country Dancing with a vengeance! Ian of Nairn had put together a well-rounded selection of dances which members with experience could enjoy and which the inexperienced (and there were a few) could follow and soon pick up. During the evening we were privileged to be introduced to, and the first to perform, a new dance compiled especially for occasion by Ian of London entitled "Kilts Off at Rothes Glen" which was deservedly given several repeats. Those three of four hours on the dance floor were truly hilarious - who knows how long we were dancing? Most of us lost all sense of time (and some of us who should have known better, all sense of timing!) In the wee small hours guests exhaustedly crept back to their rooms, or to those of new found friends. Saturday dawned bright, if a little breezy, and after enjoying a splendid Scottish breakfast, we wandered the spacious hotel grounds in small groups, taking photographs of the extensive views, of each other or of the Highland Cattle in the adjoining field! Dress for the day was totally informal. The finery of the previous evening was replaced by, in many cases a different collection of kilts or breacans combined with chunky jumpers, open-necked shirts or tweed day jackets. For those that either wanted it or felt up to it, Ian of Nairn then conducted an informal practice session of the dances we were to perform at that evening's Ceilidh. The remainder relaxed either from the exertions of the previous evening or in preparation for the evening to come. The light (but satisfying) set menu lunch gave us an opportunity to witness Pat, our most accommodating waitress, giving us her "Lady Bracknell". The delicious quiche contained leeks. "I'm sorry, but I'm allergic to leeks", cried out one guest. Pat delivered a portion of leek-free quiche as if my magic. "I'm allergic to eggs", apologised another guest. Pat took her place before the great mirrored sideboard, pulled herself up to her full height and, hands on hips, declared to the assembled company in Bracknellian tones, "Are there any other allergies? I trust no-one is allergic to Salmon?" The free afternoon gave an opportunity to see a little more of the delightful countryside. Ian of Ayrshire had devised two routes; a 'dry underfoot' walk of moderate length a short car ride away, and a shorter 'possibly wet underfoot' stroll close to the hotel. Five of us opted for the longer walk, which was along the disused railway line, now a woodland trail, between Craigellachie and Dufftown - a round trip of some 8 miles. Only two or three chose the short stroll. What the remainder of the weekend guests did must be left to your imagination, dear reader. The evening got under way with a second 'Cordon Bleu' dinner at which the numbers increased to about thirty. Some of our new friends had travelled especially from as far away as London, Glasgow and Inverness, whilst others came from "just along the way", a mile or so along the Elgin road. Saturday night was Ceilidh night. The formal atmosphere of Friday evening was swept aside and , in the balloon bedecked ballroom there appeared a dazzling array of romantic Jacobean shirts, T-shirts and goodness-knows-what teamed with yet more kilts, breacans and mini-kilts, short socks, long hose, soft soled boots and dance ghillies. There were many high spots during that evening of fun and laughter: notably the interludes for cabaret performances by the multi talented Dame Agatha Banqueworthy, Dr Cecilia Underfelts, Signora Letitia Libido (Widowed) and "The Redhead from the West". Their enchanting vocal renditions of well known, and less well known songs , ballads and arias were well matched by their dextrous threesomes upon pianoforte. They gave us monologues, they gave us two unexpectedly risque ballads of Rabbie Burns, they gave us a dramatic excerpt in which Miss Jean Brodie (obviously in her prime) was confronted by her headmistress. They were superb. Had they contrived to give us Kirby's Flying Ballet on ice in addition they could not have been more entertaining. Ian's dance, "Kilts Off at Rothes Glen", was performed yet again by popular demand - and with great gusto. There was however, no public evidence of any dancer whipping off his kilt on the final chord of the music [Ian, as it is, your new dance makes a fine demonstration piece. Imagine the additional impact if you could work that in!] If Friday evening's revelling went on into the wee small hours, Saturday's went on into the even wee-er smaller hours. Sunday morning's breakfast, in spite of being at a later hour than usual, was noticeable for the reduced numbers breaking their fast. Oh, but wait... I dare say several had slipped away early to the Kirk. Certainly, one of the previous evening's local visitors was glimpsed from the Dining Room window scuttling away, somewhat furtively, down the drive. Soon after breakfast, the cases packed, the sad farewells began. Groups posed for those last photos at the hotel's impressive main door. Non-dancers who had shown hidden talents and exhausting enthusiasm on the dance floor were being given firm instructions to join their local Scottish Country Dance classes. Postal addresses, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses were frantically exchanged as were hugs and kisses and promises to keep in touch. By midday the last cars had crept away, reluctant to leave this jewel in the rolling Scottish countryside Three members of IKAS were to stay on for an extra night. Hoping perhaps, to recapture the extraordinary atmosphere of the previous two days but, in spite of the settings remaining unchanged, the laughing faces and the ebullient personalities had gone only to be replaced by that American couple over by the window and the newlyweds holding hands at the table in the corner. Later however, as they sipped their after-Dinner coffee in the quiet of the Drawing Room, those three paused momentarily in their conversation, each raising an ear to catch that distant sound they heard echoing far away in another part of the building - surely that was Mick of Doncaster's wonderfully infectious laughter? But no, Mick had left with the others that morning. It was just one of those many vivid memories that will stay for a very long time in the minds of those who, that spring weekend wore their Kilts in the Country. Peter of Worthing This great weekend could not have taken place without the tremendous efforts of Ian of Nairn, and the wonderful co-operation of Michael and Freddie of Rothes Glen. Sadly it is unlikely that a similar event could be held in the future at the same venue, for Michael and Freddie are moving on. Our loving expressions of gratitude go to Ian and both of them. --------------------------------------------------------------------- OGG'S VIEW ========== HOW TO GET A GREAT BODY A friend of mine originally from London and who has been living in the States for the last few years was telling me about his reactions to his first trip to the UK in a while. In London he expressed himself stunned by the changes in the gay scene there. It was he said full of confidence and overt sensuality, people were enjoying their sexuality in new ways for the first time since the AIDS crisis began in the eighties. He cited the fact that the scene was no longer a single melting pot, but it has grown into a diverse sub-culture with dozens of bars, clubs and special interest groups reflecting the fact that gay people have wildly varying tastes and desires. One of the ways in which this showed itself was the growth of spaces where men of bulk could comfortably and happily relax. So-called 'bear clubs', aimed at large not to say fat men, are an import from the U.S. where the bear culture is huge, pardon the pun. It is not a self help group for fatties, you understand, but a proud, no bullshit, successful culture of big men and their admirers. Many 'bears' express themselves hugely relieved by their first experience of a bear club, for the first time they do not feel put down or pitied by some wasp waisted piece of fluff in lycra hot pants and cheek bones you could sharpen a knife on. It is, many say, like coming out and coming home at the same time. Add to the fact that there are many gay men who have come out as fancying the bear set and you have a vibrant and very non-judgemental little gay scene in microcosm. It is however much less affected by the superficiality of our youth-and-beauty culture in the mainstream gay scene. It is a sign of London's maturity that its bear culture is visible on numerous club nights in the major bar and club venues, and over and above most bars have their own well-established 'bears den'. He used the bear scene as an example, he could as easily have cited the many other sub-sets of gay life now each with their own social and geographical spaces in the scene. So, I ventured, how did you like the scene in Scotland? "Not much" he said trying to be diplomatic, "seems to have changed here". As someone living with my lover in Edinburgh and visiting London regularly to see his family and friends there I see surprisingly little of our 'commercial scene' here. Yet I was stung and taken aback. "Surely though things have got a lot better in Scotland since last you were here?" He then went on to demolish not so much the commercial scene providers as the customers. He said we were badly dressed, didn't look after our bodies, didn't set high enough standards for ourselves and failed to support any sense of a community or diversity. I was stunned by his hypocrisy. How could he just compliment London on its bear scene and then make such a body fascist, put down like that on a few wobbly Scots bellies or bums? "It is," he said triumphantly as if he had expected me to walk right into his trap, "a matter of attitude". "Meaning what exactly?" I retorted. He went on to explain that in the States and London you could have a 'great' body and still be fat or huge provided you carried that bulk with self awareness and pride, aware of your worth and value, not self hating and secretly agreeing with 'wasp waist's' put downs. Up here he thought fat and out of condition guys were predominantly so because they were low in self-esteem and lacking the confidence to either work out or take real 'ownership' of their physical self-identity. I ended the discussion by pointing out that London queens never appreciate the subtlety of Scots gay life, especially ex-pats who come back for a long weekend and dish us as if they were Desmond Morris. Still it got me thinking. It has to be said that the scene has not developed much here in recent times. OK, the bar names change, the decor modernises, new young faces appear as others age and pair off, but have thing really moved on up here? I went round some bars here and in Glasgow, seeing laughing drinkers, some pretty, some handsome, a lot very young, some extraordinarily drunk others quietly withdrawn, alone. It looked pretty much like a normal night as I remembered these things. Which was his point exactly. We do the same things in the same way and seem to learn nothing new. It is hard to find guys who look as if they spend much time in the gym, or looking after their fitness in any other more sensible way. Certainly the idea of a muscle culture on the Scots gay scene is laughable. Anyone with pecs in CCs or Bennets is either a bouncer or a tourist. But that's hardly the point, its equally hard to find a bear culture either, or a leather scene, or a skin scene, or a dyke scene, or a teen scene. It's the confidence that's missing. And in that respect not only have we not moved on, we've moved backwards. A government report issued last month said that Scots schoolchildren were the least optimistic about their future, the most stressed and the least healthy of all 'regions' of the UK. So it's not confined to the gay scene then, but is probably exacerbated there by years of public hostility and degradation of gays. If ever there was a time to make changes it's with the opening of our very own Parliament. As I write this, the pundits all sharpen their pens in that very Scots art of self destruction, to put down the MSPs, to carp and denigrate. Yet at last we have a body that can address the education of our youngsters, hopefully to modernise our laws and social structures so that we find the confidence and self esteem as individuals and as a nation to counteract a half century of self-pity and despair. And in this the gay population have a central, yes, central r“le. Let's rediscover our enthusiasm, flair, panache, glamour, camp, pizzaz, our inventiveness, mischievousness, irreverence and daring. Let's scream, sing and shriek if we feel like it. Let's dress up, down but always to impress. Let's have gym bodies, bear clubs, this club, that club. God alone knows this little country of ours needs all the unique, brash, self-confident queers it can find if it's going to find its way into the next millennium with anything like a bang. Ask not, queer friends, what the Scottish Parliament can do for you but what can you do for them and your fellow gays. It's up to you to find within yourself a great body. Start by looking in the mirror and liking what you see. Do the same in the bars and clubs when you look at the rest of us. It's the body politic that needs us to change our attitude, Pride month is always a good place to start. Time for us all to give ourselves a shake? -------------------------------------------------------------------- GRANNY SPICE ============ PANTING AFTER PRIDE! PRIDE that was. well at least there were a number of MSP's present and some sweetie straights supporting us - pity about the weather. . A word of congratulation to RAE of The NEWTOWN Bar for the tents and refreshments - Little do people realise just how much hard work goes into organising these things - as usual I had one or two people moaning at me about price and lack of choice. It's not cheap to run these venues - there's a minefield of regulations, not including premium wage payments. The costs mount up, I can assure the moaners that I have seen the figures - and little if any profit was made from the occasion. So a big thank-you to RAE and his staff who worked so hard on Saturday. And then there was Sophie's wedding - what a fuss - dress was lovely, she looked great - the less said about him the better. time will tell. Evening time I set off for Glasgow to view my Alma Mater - The Waterloo - I liked the new decor. pity there weren't more smiles - and the portrait looks wonderful - Thank you Jo and Anne. Dawn Davenport made an appearance slimline version! Thereafter to Brenda's (just call me mouthfucker) birthday party - lovely flat, hospitality - but Oooh - Brenda who did the guest list? You've thrown much better bashes than this, some of the guests - enough said - happy 100 years girl! Edinburgh was treated to some nice talent from Glasgow during the weekend and BIG WULLIE (I only fuck superstars!) from The Waterloo, appeared with a couple of lovelies - I'm told all three left their mark - or, (was it spunk stains ?) in the Sauna on Sunday - apparently there was weeping, wailing and much gnashing of teeth, and that only because TARA King was removing the curtains - plus ‡a change! Another report says GRETA of Port Glasgow on her first visit to the Capital spent the day behind John Lewis enhancing the tilework - and I'm told BLOWING a fair West Coast wind for anything that wanted serviced. careful girl, I know at least 2 people who are currently paying large fines for that venue. Alistair & Duncan Newtown Bar's friendly and welcoming duo, are back smiling and much rested from holiday - Alistair assures me he acquired only minimal Spanish - and Duncan affirms he was there to ensure that was so! Ola! The Bear Palace continues to be most interesting and attract an ever friendly crowd. This apart from a certain notorious retired drag act - Ms Elizabeth Hutton - having being re-christened by COLIN the delicious, (after an incident) - Now to be known as Betty CARWASH! - Golden shower queens, and hunky doormen are invited to tender for her services. They say she wore her old kneecaps out - not servicing sailors as is her wont - but grovelling under Peter & Brian! - spare the thought! She was suitably chastised by RAE, (Severina to friends!) and the video should be on sale soon if you like to watch an old carpet bag being flogged! Dropped into Planet Out - staff as lovely as ever - but Ooh so young a crowd - still a bit intimidating for those of a certain age - but if you like your meat tender - go for it! CC Blooms was rampant as usual - staff welcoming, Cabaret I thought rather Londonish. what about getting some of the newer Scottish talent in? I'm sure the lovely Betty B from Glasgow - who can turn a few hairs with her vocal repartee would be a welcome breath of fresh air. Why not a competition for would be drag stars during the week? - gives them a bit of experience before a live audience - and provides cheap entertainment and an alternative for the punters? Other Gay venues please take note... I'm free! Holidays are much in the air - and the queens are packing up the condoms. - I'm told just over the border in Newcastle -they charge for them - Such a short-sighted policy by bar owners eager to squeeze the last buck out of punters, shows that despite our reputation - it's the English who are tight with money! Without free condoms I hope they keep their arses tight as well! I'm off to the Pas de Calais in France - It's rumoured when I lost Calais, I had the words "Bonne a baiser! - (fuckable!) - removed from my arse! - not true - I just had them put on the other cheek in English - and I've been turning ever since! Love and safe shags. Beti, Granny Spice -------------------------------------------------------------------- EDINBURGH ========= It's 27th June, 1999. And it's a Sunday morning. And our copy is late. Myself and cohort were having a ball until a very short time ago, but he and I are now to attempt to make sense of the Edinburgh Gay Scene for you, the dear reader. Martin, the (almost) trusted regular writer of truth and justice vis-a-vis the scene is skulking around somewhere nursing a sore head and a nookie badge. He'll be popping his dolly old eek round the door barking this or that at us forthwith. Until then it's left to me, Justin, your humble and rather inexperienced servant. You see Martin thought it would be a great idea to get someone new to check the scene out. My crash course began a week ago at Pride Scotland where we had a fabulous time at NEXUS, the Cafe/bar of the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Centre who had a great Pride Party. Martin wants to apologize to the NEXUS staff for promising to give them a pre pride plug, then failing miserably, due to a mix up with copy dates. NEXUS is a terrific place all round. inexpensive, friendly, and a stone's throw from where all the action happens up the road. Pop into the Centre for a flyer to find out what events are coming up. Since last week I've been to Cafe Habana, Planet Out, the Claremont Bar, and several clubs, cafes and shops and even a Sauna! No.18 Sauna was a real eye opener for a young lad like myself, I can tell you. It's at 18 Albert Place (about half way up Leith Walk) and it's much bigger than I thought it was going to be (and much more busy.) There's a Jacuzzi, rest room, TV room and snack bar and of course, the sauna itself. It's got a laid back atmosphere and it's not half as seedy as I was expecting to be. We were there for some time. My favourite gay bar is CC Blooms. Martin's is Planet Out. As Martin is currently yelling at a dish washer to be quiet, we shall ignore his very humble opinion and extol mine. CC's is a terrific bar to visit if you are first coming out. I admit the colour of the walls hardly inspires, apparently and unbelievably the decor is new (!!?) and as Martin pointed out, you can choke to death on fag smoke on the dance floor downstairs. But its positives out weigh the bad. The bar staff are cute, friendly, and efficient, especially Peter, whom everyone seems to know. Dianne and Brian the owners seem like cool, if busy people, the bar is open till very late, there is no charge to get in the place, and the music is great. CC's is full of young people like me who want to get to know young people like me so (for me) it is the best that Edinburgh can offer. Oh, Martin has just growled that he wants to convey his best wishes to Gary for the E-mail (very mysterious). Next month Martin and I will be checking out the New Town Bar and Townhouse Health Club for the first time. We promise not to spill all the beans. Oh and if you want more on the scene in Edinburgh get yourself a copy of the ultimate Guide published by those lovely boys at the Gay Men's Health project. Telephone 0131-558 9444 or visit them at 10a Union Street. Till later... Justin Kurle and Martin Walker justin@gypsymail.com mgwuk@hotmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ GLASGOW ======= THE ARSE BANDIT WITH ATTITUDE Ah well, so this is summer. Yuk, far too many fat ugly bastards in lycra and tight T shirts for my liking. Roll on winter, this heat's really uncomfortable when you've got a mop like mine, and if it wasn't for the fact I'd hate to look the same as you lot, I'd probably get a number 1 crop (Even tho' you'd still look a skinny ugly bastard! - Ed). Best news of the month had to be the decision by the Bank of Scotland to cancel their odious little deal with the Rev Pat Robertson. Apparently the good Rev "cannot believe how powerful the homosexuals are in Scotland". Well, here's hoping he believes it now - and I think we can all take a little bit of pride in having had enough clout to make the Bank reconsider their actions. Of course, it would be nice to think that the Bank had changed their minds on reconsidering the moral issues, instead of backing down when they realised that quite a few private and corporate accounts were being cancelled. The saddest thing about this whole affair is the 25 million followers that Robertson has, and if you've ever visited the Redneck belt, you'll understand why. Thought it was dead funny when I read about Robertson resigning from the board of Laura Ashley, after Outrage had threatened to boycott its stores! Can you imagine it? Thousands of fairies threatening to stop buying girly wallpaper, poofy lampshades and flowery fabrics to run up a nice little number for wearing down the BenderBar on a Saturday night! OK, so it all had the right effect on Laura Ashley, but do they really think that your average froot spends their pink pounds in their shops? Mind you, when I look at some of the houses that you lot live in, maybe they're right! Actually, why is it that the muscle marys with all their "straight looking and acting" stuff invariably have the poofiest tastes in decor? You know the ones, - they've got the number one crop, the tight white T-shirt and the combats and don't look too much of a screamer til they open their mouths, but you go home with one, get through the front door, take one look at the camp furniture, colour co-ordinated paint and wallpaper, and the cuddly toys and think "Yes, thought this one was a bit of a pansy, and I was right! As usual, the GGLC have loads of stuff happening, far too much to list here- so take a look in and you'll find all the forthcoming events up on the noticeboard in reception, or ask George on the front desk. Stuart has now added a diary section to the centre's website so the nerdy lot can keep up to date too. The ABBA party on the 3rd of July is now sold out, and looks like being such a success that another has been arranged for the 2nd of October. This is one event I've GOT to get some photos of! I think most fairies are closet ABBA fans, so it should be camp as fuck! On Saturday 14 Aug, the Centre are having a 60s and 70s party, and there's also a Treasure Hunt being held in July - check with them for details. The Karaoke night on Tuesdays is going down a storm (all drinks ukp1.50!), and there's now live entertainment on Saturdays with Jason, Francine and Betty B. The Caf‚ Bar is currently getting done up, and certainly seems to be pulling in the punters these days, no doubt helped by their weekday happy hours from 7-9pm, when all drinks are ukp1.50. The general feeling is that the Centre is really getting its act together, and everybody seems to be noticing how much busier it is now. Pat on the back to all the Centre Management and the volunteers who've made this happen! I warned in the last issue that the scene had better enjoy having a choice of venues on Monday nights while it lasted, as one of them would fold. I was right of course, and Duck Monday joined Dead Puppy a few weeks ago, when they dropped their gay night. Penelopes is still going strong on Mondays, and last time I was in, it was pretty busy. If you're into camp music, you'll love DJ Greg. He doesn't half dig out some really classic, poofy old crap! And don't the DiscoDollies just love it?? Nice to see a DJ who's not scared to use a microphone and have a bit of FUN with the crowd!! (Cheap entry on Mondays and Tuesdays with flyers from the good bars) Had LOADS of people asking me for more information about the new bars and club opening next year. Seems like everybody's talking about it!! Sorry folks, all I know is that it's going to be bigger than ANYTHING we've got just now, should be opening early next year, and last time I spoke to Brian he told me everything was progressing as planned. Will give you any further details as soon as I get them! Glad to see you lot have been sending in your votes for best and worst pubs and clubs in Glasgow, using the online voting form on my website. Best Club award went to Bennets, with Sadies getting Best Pub, and The Waterloo getting Best Service. No surprises there! Had a few nominations for the Court Bar which was nice as they do tend to get overlooked in favour of the bigger places. Mixed reaction to Dels, which shows that they might actually be getting their shit together. Been asked to give a mention to Suzie, Natalie and Barry and say that things are much better than before. Biggest surprise was The Poo, which picked up Worst Pub, Worst Club and Worst Service. And I thought things had improved there! Results will be published every month, and anybody with Internerd access is welcome to vote. This is YOUR chance to give your opinions, and doesn't involve filling out a form from a magazine (assuming that it hasn't already been cut out). Get online and let the scene know how the venues are REALLY doing! My sources tell me that there is at least one venue owner who is less than pleased about their listing on my site, but appears to be mistaking me with somebody who actually gives a shit! 'FRAID NOT!! Hope you all enjoyed Pride. Anybody else remember that this year is actually the 30th anniversary of the Stonewall riots which made it all possible? Nobody else seems to have made any reference to this important fact in the press. I was on the 1979 London March, which was billed as the 10th anniversary, and all the badges and T-shirts bore the Stonewall logo (not the pressure group)! Still got some photos of that march somewhere, must dig them out for a laugh! Got a phone call from DJ Stella recently. Seems like he's decided to make a return to the Glasgow scene and is now back in his old slot at Penelopes on Friday and Saturday. He's also asked me to tell you that The Poo have asked him to DJ there. Interesting eh? Stella was yet another of the Glasgow A-List who was in fact barred from The Poo for falling foul of the Virginia Street Junta. Nice to see them having to make another climb-down in view of the ongoing exodus to Bennets at the weekend. If this continues, they'll be letting me back in next!! (only joking, absolutely NO chance of my ban being lifted!) Seems like Stella has being living the quiet married life recently, only venturing out to DJ at Liberty over in Dundee, but has now decided to continue playing to the Glasgow DiscoDollies. Catch him at The Poo every third Sunday of the month starting on 18th of July. Trade are holding an IBIZA LAUNCH PARTY on Saturday 5th June. Not being a club bunny, got no idea what this means (clubbing is for those who prefer posing to shagging!). Thought that was where all the straight lager louts went on holiday! Anyway, DJs are Steve Thomas, Guy Williams and Ziad, who you'll all no doubt have heard of, but if not just pretend anyway. Cynical bastards like me have always taken the view that the dance scene is 99% hype and 1% ability! Still, I know that Trade has been going down well with the Glasgow scene, so get yourselves along if you're into the dance scene. Had to laugh at Bennets flyer for their GIRLS ON TOP women only night. Picture of Joan Collins!! One of the biggest icons for gay men on the planet, and they use it on a flyer for a lesbian disco! Well I thought it was funny. Anyway, it was advertising their women only night. First Friday of the month on the top storey, DJ is Karen Dunbar and they've got drinks promos. (Don't know what the Glasgow girls are like, but I always remember when I used to run Women only nights I had to order in plenty of Guinness - SERIOUSLY!) Liked the article in last month's issue about the theme of this years Pride being "CELEBRATE DIVERSITY" and the pressures on dykes to conform to the look that so many of them sport. Couldn't agree more! Absolutely the same for us guys - I get so bored with the "hippy" comments levelled at me, and the endless suggestions to get a nice haircut and some trendy clothes. Like Marina in the article, some of us are happy with the way we are, and don't give a fuck about the boring farts who don't have the balls to change from the gay or lesbian stereotype. Personally, I totally fail to see what is SO trendy and fashionable about looking the same as everybody else, and maybe some of you lot should consider that next time you're trying to find your mate among a couple of hundred other crop-heads down in Bennets next Saturday night! I'll bet that like me, Marina doesn't have to try too hard to get a shag, due to the lack of competition. THINK ABOUT IT!! GOSSIP AND SNIPPETS!!! -+- Seems that North of Watford magazine has managed to piss off the team from Pride Scotland with their last article about them, and Mr Ivison had his Press Pass to the hospitality tent withdrawn! -+- Will the Lane really be getting the long promised steam room, seem to have been hearing this for the past year! -+- What is happening with the University LGB Society website, not been updated for ages -+- Still waiting to hear if the new Austins will ever open. Is it ever going to happen? Press release please, as the scene are asking a lot of questions. -+- Some nice feedback about certain venues not stocking ScotsGay have been left on the Magazine's website, with a few barbed comments about two of our Glasgow venue owners. Nice to know what the scene really feels! -+- FASHION ALERT... Spotted a couple of pansies sporting ponytails recently. Not the real thing which reaches halfway down to your arse like mine, but those poofy little ones that were so popular with the breeders some years ago. NAFF!!! Either grow it or cut it off, but for fuck's sake don't try and kid yourself it's trendy! Same applies to those going around without any socks on. How 80s Miami Vice! Well, I think that's about it for this month. Any gossip or stuff you want me to cover, get in touch at the address at the back or by e-mail. If any of the pub or club owners want me to plug anything that I've missed out, remember that ScotsGay is currently Scotland's ONLY locally published magazine. Not much point in paying to advertise in some of the English magazines, where the vast majority of the readership will never make the trip up north! Make mine a stiff one! GOLDILOCKS E-MAIL - goldilocks@drink.demon.co.uk WEBSITE - http://www.goldilocks.freeuk.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- INVERNESS ========= Hello there folks from the sun kissed North. Yes indeed, summer has arrived, and scantily clad talent is in abundance once more in the Highland Capital. Lots to report on this issue. As you may remember Reach Out Highland were to stage the Walk for Life for the first time in Inverness, well I am very pleased to say that this event was a resounding success, with over ukp1000 pounds being raised, on the day itself. I am very proud to say that the number of walkers in Inverness exceeded the combined totals of the Glasgow and Edinburgh walks. To say that ROH were delighted would be an understatement. The night previous to the Walk saw the Dance for Life being held in the Eden Court Theatre where a good night was had by all who attended and music was provided as usual by Fiddle Fling. The last meeting of the Youth Group was very well attended with many weel kent faces putting in an appearance along with some new faces. Around twenty in total turned up and many then went on to Sleepers bar within the Station Hotel for a good old knees up. Speaking of Sleepers, it really is going from strength to strength, with our presence ever increasing. This is good to see, and the management seem happy with this situation also. Many of the gang from here up North made the trip down to Pride recently, with the Youth Group marching and also sharing the Gay Men's Health float. The weather did not seem to dampen spirits, (though many were consumed) and several of the posse apparently got their legs over too, so all in all a good Pride. Thanks must go to Reach Out Highland for making it possible for so many of us to go. Speaking to Ronald, one of ROH's project workers, he tells me that one or two things socially are in the pipeline, including the Youth Group's 3rd birthday party, which was a great night last time around, also in the planning stages is a camping trip, the prospect of which I must admit both intrigues and terrifies me !!!!!!! In any event please contact ROH for further details on these events. Some news now, tinged with sadness, I deeply regret having to report that ROH's much loved Jackie Redding has decided to resign from her position as Chief Executive of the organisation, she is to remain with us until the end of July, when she will then move back down south to Birmingham and her roots. I must admit to being a trifle wary of Jackie when she first arrived having taken over the reins from our other friend Andrew Hunter. Not being a great lover of change, I was upset at Andrew's departure, but very quickly I came to realise that the wealth of compassion, understanding, and truly wonderful nature of Jackie made her a worthy successor to fill the position left by Andrew and to continue his good works. She showed that she had her own thoughts and ideas, and was a force to be reckoned with in so many different areas including funding and the on going fight against Homophobia. Jackie truly has been a ray of sunlight in not only mine but so many others lives, and we will all truly miss this unique and perceptive woman (and her mad daughter !!!!!) We all wish Jackie & Joanne all the very best for the future in whatever they decide to do. That's about it for now folks, so take care, be good and careful, .... okay just careful then, and enjoy the summer while it lasts (probably will have ended by the time you all get to read this). Love, CALMAC xxxxxxxxxx ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DUNDEE ====== Marvellous turnout from Dundee at the Pride Scotland event in Edinburgh. The Outreach Team's bus was well supported and well organised except they forgot to tell the driver where to drop the punters off. Didn't stop the squad making their way to the march start point via some normally butch watering holes which were taken over by gays for the day. Lesbian drummers, DJs, main stage acts, health tents, sponsorship and other areas all had a healthy input from the Tayside area. It's about time people on the scene in and around Dundee took an active part in this type of thing and show the central belters that homo life exists further north. Businesses up north are not however getting on very well. Owners of Dundee's Fanny Club sited above Bar XS are also the owners of Aberdeen's Club 2000. They are being threatened with legal action to recover over a thousand pound's worth of water damage "alleged" to have been caused by them over six months ago. The owners of Bar XS have thrown down the gauntlet and legal action is imminent. Disturbing news has reached me that a mature man previously convicted of male rape in Dundee is currently at the Queen's displeasure in Perth following an indiscretion. Minor this time his last lenient sentence may be reviewed at court. Senior gays in Dundee who believed the previous convictions circumstances were 'out of character' may like to think again. Rape of a male or female is despicable and should not be accepted in our community. Criticism of me is fine but it is difficult to write about what is happening on the Dundee scene as it is smaller than Glasgow or Edinburgh. I do come out with the odd paragraph of crap! The Dundee Queerier has now found out how difficult it is at times to create an interesting article. So they have resorted to taking the piss out of my column and trying to imply some inaccuracies. I had the last laugh 'cause everything I have written in the last two years has either been true at the time or become true later. I must send a copy of their last issue to those who fund them such as the Local Council who will be somewhat dismayed at their public finds being spent on this "informative newsletter". Tayfriend were for a long time a group who were rarely heard or seen of in Dundee. Over the last couple of years they have been holding social nights on the scene and that is positive and should be encouraged. Why is it that they too have been slated in the Dundee Leerier? When the group wrote a letter of objection to the rag, the spelling mistakes were highlighted in childish fashion and scorn was poured upon Tayfriend yet again. The Dundee Peerier has also attempted to rewrite history claiming that the one-nighter at former premises The Edge was a huge success when it closed because less than 30 people were attending at the end. The very public entrance caused great fear to those still in the closet. It may now be time for a change of committee members as they are meant to provide support to gays and lesbians in the area and they appear to be running their own agenda. Rumours that they have also fallen out with their landlords and that the operators of Liberty Nightclub and of Bar XS are considering pulling out of the joint services Forum must indicate they are single-handedly destroying the team spirit of all the differing interests of the community in Dundee which has taken years to build. Charlies are running karaoke the last Friday of every month and I'm delighted they used a proper karaoke outfit last time. We deserve the best! Liberty karaoke is well attended on Wednesdays and is hosted by Landlady Brenda. Queer as Folk tunes from the TV series and the album can be heard at Libs on the last Saturday of July when they present the singer of most of them, Hannah Jones from Respect. Favourites such as "I Am What I Am" and loads more are on offer. At time of going to press the venue is deciding whether to sell tickets so we can't advise you. Holiday season is underway in Dundee. Much male flesh is being flaunted in the City Square making it an ideal cruising area at lunch time. Late licenses abound at Liberty with every Saturday in July and the first in August with the bars being open an extra hour to 3:30am. What will happen at the Millennium? Walter Schwimmer was elected on June 23rd by a vote of 138-136 over the UK's Terry Davis. In 1996 in the Austrian Parliament, Schwimmer voted against repeal of Penal Code Articles 220 and 221 which prohibit gay organizations and positive information about homosexuality. In 1996 and 1998 he also voted against repeal of the discriminatory age of consent for gay men, Article 209. The Council of Europe is a grouping of 40 nations pledged to uphold human rights and cooperate in a variety of activities. Its judicial organ is the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France. The court enforces the 1952 European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. SVEND ROBINSON DEMOTED Openly gay Canadian Member of Parliament Svend Robinson was demoted by his New Democratic Party (NDP) on June 9th for introducing a petition from 1,000 atheists and humanists who want to remove a reference to God from the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. NDP leader Alexa McDonough said Robinson should have tabled the petition quietly, not in front of cameras, and she moved him from the party's front bench back to the fifth row of seats in the House of Commons. "It's worse than poor political judgment," said fellow NDP MP Nelson Riis. "I think it's absolutely stupid. Our position has always been to have God in the constitution. We supported it in the beginning. But it's a free country; you can be stupid if you want to in this business, and Mr. Robinson has done that." Robinson said later, "I deeply regret the pain and difficulty that my decision to table this petition has caused ... for our party across the country." AUSTRALIA Two bombs exploded at the offices of the Queensland AIDS Council in Townsville, Queensland, Australia, on June 10th. Townsville is located more than 500 miles north of Brisbane. No one was seriously hurt though one staff member sustained shrapnel injuries. QAC volunteer Peter Morris told Melbourne Star Observer that the explosion was the latest in a series of anti-gay attacks in the city. PRIDE Paris' pride parade attracted 200,000 people and 80 floats on June 26th, Agence France-Presse reported. Marchers demanded parliament pass the twice-defeated Civil Solidarity Pact which gives gay couples many of the rights of matrimony. More than 250,000 people turned out for Berlin's Christopher Street Day parade on June 26th, AFP said. Thousands also marched on June 26th in Madrid, Zurich, and Arnhem in The Netherlands. The Dutch celebration moves to a different city each year. IRELAND Irish lesbians have erected billboards in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Belfast and Derry advertising a helpline and urging parents to accept their lesbian daughters. The project was funded by the European Union's New Opportunities for Women program. "It's a visibility campaign that's about trying to encourage some thought for those who are lesbian and their families," said Anita Thoma of the Lesbian Education and Awareness group. Speaking to Cork's Examiner newspaper, Thoma said: "There are huge issues for anyone who is lesbian. We still have people trying to lead double lives and no human being should have to do that. ... Lesbians are your sister, your aunt, your shopkeeper, your taxi driver, so it's about all kinds of relationships in society." BRAZIL AIDS deaths in Brazil dropped from 979 to 723 per 100,000 residents between 1995 and 1997 thanks to the new anti-HIV drugs, the Ministry of Health has reported. The drugs are provided free at state health clinics. However, HIV infection rates are apparently on the rise. The number of people who contracted the virus in the first quarter of 1999 doubled to 10,224 compared to the last quarter of 1998, officials said. EL SALVADOR Fifty people with AIDS blocked a street in downtown San Salvador, El Salvador, for two hours recently demanding the government provide anti-HIV treatments. A lawsuit over the matter was appealed to the Supreme Court, in front of which the protest took place, six weeks ago. Supreme Court Secretary Jose Ortiz told the demonstrators the appeal is "under study" due to the "complicated" nature of the case. There are 2,455 known people with AIDS in El Salvador, according to health officials. Elsewhere in Central America, Costa Rica and Panama provide triple-drug anti-HIV treatments via their national health-care systems. In both nations, the drugs were made available only after Supreme Court rulings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- REVIEWS ======= b o o k s ========= The Best of the Super Stars 1999 Edited by John Patrick ukp8.99, Starbooks Not enough pictures if you ask me, although I must admit page 184 (Jordan Taylor Hanson) is my favourite. From Prince William to Brad Renfro and the cute Jonathon Taylor Thomas. Of course there are older bods in here, but I just picked out my favourites, hope you like it as well as I did, shame there was so much text. A Good Start, Considering by Peter Ryde ukp9.95, G.M.P. WARNING: Reading this book can affect your mental state. It is 1945 your parents are dead, killed in an air raid and your sole remaining relative, your gran, has just died so the authorities put you into a "care" facility where from the start you are beaten, humiliated and raped, (so what has changed? I hear you ask). This story the author tells us, is fiction but the words seem to come from a person who has been in these situations, either the author has had some experiences or Peter Ryde is a creative genius, either way you are in for an excellent read. Friction 2 - Best Gay Erotic Fiction Edited by John Erich ukp10.99, Alyson A good book for curling up with on lonely nights but not written very well and has the feel that it is just a another one off the production line. Good for a wank and with 429 pages a big read. Quality might have been better than size . Good Hair Days - A History of British Hairstyling by Caroline Cox ukp11.00, Quartet A great book for anybody interested in hairstyles, good for hairdressing students as it contains a good selection of photos and text on contemporary and old hairstyles, also good for any one putting on theatre productions as one can match a period with a hairstyle. Well written and interesting for me considering my lack of hair (bald). A few good laughs in this one. Mosaic Techniques by Emma Biggs ukp14.99, Cassell Truly mind-blowing. Yes I love mosaics and who doesn't, if they are done well we have seen that they can last for thousands of years. I was asked by a friend if I had come across a good book on mosaics and here it is, this is most probably the only book you will ever need on the subject. It contains every bit of info you need from beginning to end. If you are doing up your house and fancy something different then get this book, it'll inspire you. Pictures of beautiful mosaics from Pompeii, from work by Gaudi (Spanish architect for those heathens who don't know) to decorated mirrors it's all here. Exotica - Fabricated soundscapes in a real world by David Toop ukp12.99, Serpents Tail The musician's William Burroughs. David Toop takes us on an extraordinary journey of discovery, a rip roaring journey through the 20th Century's world of exotica, enough said. Read it. Andy Martin film ==== From 9th July Scottish residents will be able to see one of the most enjoyable gay romantic comedies ever filmed - "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss" (15) at Edinburgh's Cameo cinema. It is the first feature film by new writer/director Tommy O'Haver who has astutely chosen hits of yesteryear for drag queens to mime to. I was so impressed by versions of Petula Clark's "This Is My Song" and "Happy Heart" that I asked the distributing company if I could view it twice more - something I have never done before. The opening finds out-of-work photographer, Sean P. Hayes, waking up one morning to decide the gorgeous hunk in bed with him, his once a week lover, must be sent back to his boyfriend as he refuses to share him anymore. Instead, he develops an interest in an attractive straight young man, Brad Rowe, whom most of his friends are drooling over. As director Tommy admits he has spent most of his life being infatuated with straight men, I was surprised he had written that his leading man goes through so much frustration. Most straight guys are not that difficult to organise as vast numbers admit very few girls are prepared to orally stimulate their extremities. They touch it like a time bomb about to explode and make it clear they are doing him an enormous favour as they find it an exhausting experience. Many straights become bisexual because a wonderland opens up to them through a guy worshipping and adoring their prize possession in a way no woman has done before. A gay guy doesn't have to cajole his straight interest to stay the night. He only has to show him a straight movie on video and all that heaving femininity on screen will stimulate him enough to welcome a tentative palm. And if, by chance, the object of his lust is amongst the minority who run away gasping "I've never done anything like that before", the majority are very happy to lie back and enjoy the experience. Despite my reservations about the plotline I am looking forward to Mr O'Haver's next film as I did enjoy "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss". The world success of "Notting Hill" has inspired Polygram to rush the release in August of Hugh Grant's latest comedy, "Mickey Blue Eyes" produced by his lithe and lovely other half, Elizabeth Hurley. I can see why American women are so impressed with Hugh as his English diffidence onscreen is such a contrast to Hollywood macho men constantly trying to prove their masculinity. Mr Grant's well documented experience picking up a black lady on the game in his car is likely to have enhanced his box office appeal. For, although it must have been embarrassing for Miss Hurley, American women became aware he was eager to experience variations of their gender. In his latest comedy he runs an art auction house in New York where his main problem has always been that paintings in transit are constantly held up by dock workers and delivery men. Falling in love proves an even bigger problem as his lady, Jean Tripplehorn, says she can't marry him as her father, James Caan, is a gangster and all his friends in that world would take advantage of Hugh for their own evil ends. Mr Grant refuses to accept any favours from them but finds, miraculously, overnight his art deliveries arrive instantly from the docks brought by men who treat him with a new respect. And almost as quickly his rival auction house is burnt down. It is two thirds of a hilarious comedy. But it is likely to do better in the States then here as when a dead body in a bag is being thrown around with humorous intent it could appeal to American audiences more. The first Austin Powers film did so well that we now have "Austin Powers 2 - The Spy Who Shagged Me" which is top of the American popularity charts and means leading man Mike Myers will be able to command a salary of $12 million in future. Some British distributors are so shocked by the title that they are only putting "Austin Powers 2" above their cinemas. This James Bond spoof has Dr Evil returning to Earth from the frozen recesses of space and hatching a new diabolical scheme to annihilate the world. The mind boggles! "Hi-Lo Country" (15) is the American west in the forties where Woody Harrison returns from the war to reorganise his life. Woody has enough appeal to keep any film going, but I will never forgive him for being involved in "Natural Born Killers". What people will do for money. Those amongst us who have loved Catherine Deneuve over the years may like to know she has won the best actress award at the Venice Film Festival for her performance in "Place Vendome". It is a meandering story of a Paris wholesale diamond house where her husband dies and she attempts to reorganise the diminishing business. You need to be a very loyal Deneuve fan to cope with this one. If French cinema is your scene "Late August Early September" has greater impact about the changing dramas straight couples have in their love lives. As screen nudity no longer has the power to surprise that it had at one time, nowadays it is dialogue you are unlikely to hear on TV like: "I love her, but I like the way you fuck me". A Dutch peculiarity called "The Polish Bride" has been winning all kinds of awards at film festivals. It shows a blossoming relationship between a Polish refugee and a farmer who is defending her from two men who have imported her to work in a brothel. Stark, but memorable. Woody Allen has never written a bad New York comedy, but he made the unfortunate decision this time to cast Kenneth Branagh in the lead instead of himself in "Celebrity" (18). While nature has not been kind to Woody facially he has a brilliantly dead pan comedy personality to deliver his witty lines. Mr Branagh doesn't have that. However, an Allen script without him in it is still worth your money. Plus Leonardo DiCaprio and Judy Davis are on hand to hold your interest. "Cruel Intentions" (15) is an updated reworking of a play called "Dangerous Liaisons" filmed in 1988 that had John Malkovitch in 18th Century France seducing a virgin for a bet. This time around it has new boy Ryan Phillippe who is soooo good looking that the audience around me were breathing heavily as they studied his lips that are full enough to get lost in. For him alone you must see this film. "The Mummy" (15) is great fun for action film lovers set in Egypt in the twenties where the dishy and dominating Brendan Fraser helps Rachel Weisz explore ancient tombs protecting her from endless assassins. The plotline would be a nightmare to explain, but the special effects and the incredible amount of money spent on making this film will give you constant delight. "All The Little Animals" (15) is an interesting oddity about a brain-damaged boy, Christian Bale, who has grown into manhood while remaining a child. An evil stepfather, Daniel Benzali, plots to steal his inheritance, a large department store. He runs away to Cornwall and encounters John Hurt whose life work is caring for animals who have been run over on motorways. Take a large supply of paper tissues with you. "Virtual Sexuality" (15) is a British comedy of computer graphics where the leading lady changes sex and where subsequent adventures of an attractive cast will keep you wide awake. "Venus Beauty" (15) is a French beauty parlour that highlights the lives of the staff working there and their men. Other peoples' sex lives are always of interest. You need to be a snow lover to appreciate "Winter Sleepers" that follows the lives of young Germans in the Alps in and out of bed and car crashes. A totally unknown cast give quite an insight into German life. First we asked what BiCon had to offer women: Well, there are some! We've generally had women-only sessions and it's been about 50-50 over the years in terms of attendance. We've got more mixed work shops. There used to be quite a trend towards having women-only workshops. Now we're actually having to ask people to run them because I know that some people still want them, and I want to see it, but there's much less of a pressure towards it now. I think the bi community has become somewhat less sexist and people are feeling a lot more comfortable about working in mixed groups much of the time. But I still think there's a place for women-only sessions. There's a women-only session on feminism in particular and I think one of the massage sessions is going to be women-only. We're making sure that the safe sex information targets women as well as men, which means we're having to supplement the stuff provided by Gay Men's Health as they haven't got the budget for it. There are going to be dental dams - we have them. This year we've got quite a lot of creative things on. I'll be doing creative writing sessions, we've got someone else doing poetry and we've got Tom Robinson doing songwriting. And we'll have ear acupuncture - I'm fascinated by that! SG: Do you think people's attitudes have changed over the years? There's been a change in attitude in the mainstream lesbian and gay groups towards bisexuality and that's been reflected in what people want to do with BiCon. In the earlier years, there was quite a lot more people trying to talk about working with lesbian and gay groups which is now, fortunately, less of an issue. We had some difficulties in the early years as well, I think. SM wasn't considered a suitable topic either in the gay community or some parts of the bi community, but that's changed. I think it's become more of a social event, which doesn't meant there isn't any politics. It's the same kind of trend that's happened in the gay movement across the country, but hopefully slightly less so than is happening to Pride in London. SG: Do you think we'll get letters complaining about us featuring a bisexual woman in ScotsDyke? I wouldn't reckon so. I've found Scotland much more tolerant anyway. Pride Scotland is much more inclusive. Since I've been up here, I haven't really met with much of that kind of reaction. When I was in Norwich, I did get pushed out quite heavily in the mid-eighties. I think a lot of things have changed since then. I had the delightful experience of being reclassified as a 'supporter' of our local GaySoc because they thought I couldn't actually be a member because... I think they thought because if you weren't gay, you might report them for doing illegal things against Clause 28 or something, even though I was actually helping organise it! Or something equally nonsensical. I think it's become much less of an issue now. SG: How will you recover when it's all over? I personally like the Floatarium. Floating in complete silence and not being bothered. I'm supposed to be moving house the week afterwards so I don't get to relax for a while. BiCon takes place at Edinburgh University's Pollock Halls from Friday July 16th till Sunday 18th. All bisexuals and their friends are welcome. More information can be found at http://bi.org/~bicon/bicon99/ or by writing to BiCon 1999, BM BiCon, London WC1N 3XX. --------------------------------------------------------------------- CREDITS ======= ScotsGay: a bi-monthly magazine for lesbians, gays and bisexuals edited, printed and published in Scotland.
