During my last few years at school, I was a homophobic little shite. I knew I was sexually attracted to guys, I wasn't a complete virgin and I even used to go along to meetings of the Scottish Minorities Group - Scotland's first gay organisation. So, I should have known better. In fact, I did know better, which makes it all the worse. The truth is, I was so scared of what my school mates might think, that I adopted homophobia as a defence. It probably wasn't even a very convincing defence. Unfortunately, none of my teachers had the sense or courage to take me aside and give me a bollocking. It took one kid, considerably younger than I, to do that. I don't know if he was gay himself, but his father had been an actor with lots of gay friends and he took exception to my crass remarks about pooves. From his few pointed words came a sudden realisation that this hypocritical way of acting wasn't only objectionable but also was extremely self harmful. Thank you, Simon. The homophobic remarks stopped immediately and coming out publicly was only a short step away. Sadly, not at school, for the end of my final term arrived too soon. But, what if I had ignored his advice and continued in my homophobic ways? Would he have been justified in telling others that I was gay? I believe so. No gay person has the right to deny their sexuality and inflict harm on gay people by expressing virulent homophobia. If exposure will undermine their homophobia, then exposure is justified. And that is why Garry Otton has my full support in outing a gay homophobe elsewhere in this issue. In common with many gay people, I know the pain involved (I was outed to my mother by an Evangelical Christian before I was ready). But, in the end, honesty about who we are can only make us grow as individuals. Even if it is others who have to be honest for us. John Hein --------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS ==== WENDY BENDS TO GAY AGENDA Scottish Cabinet minister, Wendy Alexander, has exposed differences between the London Government's priorities for pro-equality legislation and those of the Scottish Executive. Speaking to the Interpride '99 conference in Glasgow on 22nd October, the Minister for Communities received a standing ovation after promising to attack discrimination against homosexuals. Most significantly, she pledged action to tackle Section 28 of the Local Government Act. She said, "We are aware of your concern, and this is legislation we at the Scottish Executive are deeply uncomfortable with. The new Scotland should be open and inclusive, and this is not how it has always been. That is what should characterise the Parliament and we have a legislative agenda of action which centres around the equalisation of the ages of consent." The minister's remarks come as a stark contrast to latest moves in London where Outcast reports that Cabinet sources have confirmed that the repeal of Section 28 will not be included in the next Local Government Bill unless a backbench MP sponsors an amendment independently of the Government. Ministers fear that 'the time is not right' for a repeal and plan to cite opposition in the Lords as a defence for blocking a debate until after the election. Ms Alexander, who is the Labour MSP for Paisley North, also confirmed that, "All going well, the legal age of consent will be lowered by next year". BAD REPORTS - COUNCILS MUST DO BETTER Action, they say, speaks louder than words. In the last few months the LGBT communities have heard and read a lot of words, particularly about the grind of violence, harassment and intimidation that too many of us have to endure. First came the Glasgow City Council LGBT Social Exclusion Report produced by the Glasgow Women's Library. This was a quality report with quality findings and recommendations. Unfortunately it looks like these powerful words have generated little action in Glasgow, perhaps if you live in Glasgow you should ask why... More recently, the annual report of Fife Men indicated the horrendous level of violence and harassment which continues to be experienced by gay and bisexual men in the Kingdom. There is little action to tackle these issues from Fife Police, Fife Council or the Heath Board. Perhaps if you life in Fife you should ask why... More recently still, the Community Safety Partnership in Edinburgh, a group which includes the City Council, Police, Heath Board and Community Groups has commissioned and published its own, independent, report. Its findings are perhaps even more shocking because the report is independent of lgbt community organisations and so can't be dismissed by the "well you would say that" brigade. The findings of the Edinburgh report, are a damning indictment of the way homophobia effects the level of service you can expect from the Council, how you will be treated by the police or the heath service. Indeed, many believe it is the health service that comes out of things worst of all. When asked, more than two thirds of people claimed they had received bad treatment, or in many cases had been subject to violence and harassment, by heath care staff in Lothian because they were LGBT. Like many of the reports that have gone before it, its likely that the shocking findings of the Edinburgh report will fail to spur the powers that be into action. The Council, Police, and Heath Board and Trusts will continue to treat us like second class citizens. If you live in Edinburgh you should ask why this is. At the end of the 20th Century, the Public Services in Scotland stand accused of failing in their statutory obligation to discharge their duties in a fair and equitable way. There must be a call to action to us as a community, to the public services and to the Scottish Parliament to belatedly take this issue seriously. Peter Forbes HOTLINE TO GOD Holy Trinity Metropolitan Community Church Edinburgh has been spreading the Gospel (principally but not exclusively) within the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered communities in Edinburgh for over four years. As the Church's ministry has expanded, more and more people have been contacting the Church for information on worship, relationship blessings or any of the other aspects of its work. It is with great pleasure that Holy Trinity MCC Edinburgh is able to announce the establishment of a new dedicated phone line for all enquiries about the Church and its ministry. Calls should be directed to the Church Office on 0131-664 8827. Ian Bonner-Evans, Pastoral Leader of the Edinburgh congregation, is delighted by this expansion of the Church's outreach. "Hopefully", he said "We will now be able to make contact with more people, especially those who may not have felt comfortable telephoning a private phone number." The Church has also moved its Internet web site to http://www.mccedinburgh.org.uk/ QUERY Edinburgh City Council have been criticised for proposing to enquire into the sexuality of their employees to ensure that the Council doesn't discriminate against anybody. INTERPRIDE Interpride '99, the annual conference of LGBT Pride festival organisers from around the world was held in Glasgow. Attended by nearly 150 delegates from around the world, the conference received a Civic Reception in the City Chambers where Baillie Irene Graham welcomed delegates on behalf of the City. This was the first time that the conference had been held outwith the USA and it was hosted by Pride Scotland. BOOTS BEAR Boots Men opened their first store in Edinburgh this month. CONFERENCE The Equality Network's conference "Equality For All 3" will be held in Edinburgh's City Chambers on Saturday 11th December from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Its focus will be "Tackling Institutionalised Discrimination". The aims are to explore the forms that institutionalised discrimination takes against LGBT people in Scotland and to identify ways of tackling it. There will be workshops on discrimination in health, education, local government, police and justice, religion and the media. With the new Parliament just getting going, this is the ideal time to press for new policies to tackle the discrimination we face daily in Scotland's institutions. THE MOUND IN ACTION Tim Hopkins of the Equality Network, provides a rundown on what's happening in our new Parliament. The Scottish Parliament's Equal Opportunities Committee has started work by establishing a sub-committee to focus specifically on sexual orientation issues, which should include LGBT issues. Three other sub-committees will work on race, gender and disability. The Equal Opportunities Committee is one of the two largest committees of the Parliament, consisting of 13 MSPs, and its sexual orientation sub-committee, officially known as a "reporter's group", will be convened by Nora Radcliffe, the Liberal Democrat MSP for Gordon. Earlier this month, the Equality Network gave a presentation to the Equal Opportunities Committee. We welcomed the establishment of the Committee and its sexual orientation reporter's group, both developments that we had called for last year while the Parliament's structure was being debated. We proposed that the sexual orientation reporter's group should establish a strongly consultative mode of working, meeting regularly with people from across Scotland's diverse LGBT communities. We hope that this will develop over the next two or three months. One of the roles of the Equal Ops Committee will be to examine every Bill produced by the Scottish Executive, and every set of policy proposals (so-called green and white papers), for their impact on equal opportunities. The Committee will then produce a public report addressed to the Executive, and in the case of Bills, for the Committee in charge of the Bill in Parliament. In this way, any negative equal opportunities implications can be highlighted and hopefully put right before policies and Bills become law. The Equality Network has so far submitted to the Equal Ops Committee briefings on the effects on LGBT people of two Bills proposed by the Executive: the Improvement in Scottish Education Bill and the Adults with Incapacity Bill. Copies of the full briefings will shortly be available on our website. Another function of the Equal Ops Committee will be to identify failings in the existing law and to propose changes. The Committee has already questioned Jackie Baillie, Equality Minister, about section 28, and we hope will call clearly for the repeal of the section as soon as possible. Section 28 and the Education Bill The Improvement in Scottish Education Bill is expected to come before the Scottish Parliament in November, and to be debated over the following two or three months. The Bill sets up management arrangements for Scotland's schools, from central to local government, and to schools themselves. The Equality Network and our sister organisation Outright Scotland are calling for section 28 to be repealed in this Bill. This notorious section bans local authorities from "promoting the teaching in schools of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship". The section is a direct impediment to the management structures introduced in the new Education Bill - it stops local authorities from pursuing inclusive equality and fairness and effective anti-bullying strategies in schools. Section 28 inhibits fair treatment of young LGBT people in schools, stops schools from dealing properly with homophobic bullying, and is an excuse to leave all discussion of LGBT issues out of the syllabus. It prevents proper health education and support about issues such as HIV, and about emotional health. Section 28 is costing young people's lives. The Labour Government have been saying for two and a half years that they will repeal section 28 when a suitable legislative opportunity arises. We say that opportunity is this Education Bill. Scotland's young LGBT people cannot wait any longer. The Adults with Incapacity Bill updates the law as it affects people who lack the ability to make decisions about their own finances or welfare. Most of the Bill is effectively "sexual-orientation neutral", having no differential effect on LGBT people. However, the Bill does discriminate against same-gender partners. It gives particular weight to the views of the "nearest relative" of an adult with incapacity. A husband or wife, or an unmarried opposite-gender partner, count as the nearest relative. But a same-gender partner does not, so that a person's parent, sister, or even their nephew will be their nearest relative, and has a stronger right to be consulted than their partner. This is clearly discriminatory, and the Equality Network has pointed this out to the Scottish Executive and to the Equal Ops Committee. We have proposed an amendment to the Bill to extend the definition of nearest relative to include same-gender partner, and we await the Executive's response. STOVE The Bishop of Edinburgh, Rt Rev Richard Holloway has announced that he is to retire within the next two years. The Episcopalian Primus has been a strong supporter of lgbt rights and recently described campaigner Peter Tatchell as a 'modern day prophet'. BI AND OUT Scottish actor and funny man Alan Cumming has come out as pansexual in an interview with the American gay magazine Out. He recently won an Emmy award for his performance in the Broadway musical Cabaret. MEDIC OUT The Scottish secretary of the British Medical Association, Dr Brian Potter, has resigned following allegations of an affair with a male patient. CARING John Wilkes, former Chief Executive of PHACE West, has a new job as Director of the Carers National Association (Scotland). HOOTS! The Rainbow Fund's 2nd Annual Ceilidh will take place in Glasgow's Central Hotel on Saturday 6th November. Proceeds go to support people with AIDS/HIV. JOY! The prudish Scottish News of the World's Jim Lawson has come up with a cracker! A landlady of a pub in Keith, Morayshire has lost her licence because a male stripper "performed a sordid bar-side sex act with a 15-year-old girl." Oh, dear! But read on. The Scottish News of the World breathlessly revealed: "Drinkers looked on in horror as the man peeled down to reveal he was wearing a pair of scanty WOMEN'S knickers. He then exposed himself to his stunned audience before engaging in simulated, (repeat: simulated) sex with the under-age girl. The disgusting scene took place at a private party in the boozer - which is situated yards from a kids' playpark." Oh no! Not that old 'near children playing' chestnut! Hands up, how many of you have heard mum and dad do it only feet away, in the next bedroom? The police said the landlord "recorded the whole episode on his video camera" - this included "a male stripped to his underpants and, more surprisingly, to a pair of ladies' underwear underneath. Which was seen by our officers and deemed to be indecent. Chief Inspector Stewart said the way the bar was run amounted to undue public nuisance and a threat to public order and safety. He also said that Keith Grammar School and local church leaders had expressed concern". The video was seized. The Scottish News of the World held up a dignified picture of the crest of the burgh with a caption underneath gasping: "SCANDALISED: Keith" before promptly changing the tone to beg: "DO you know about a sex scandal? Tell us by ringing 0141-420 5301. Don't worry about the cost, we'll call you back." Old Mother (Joan) Burnie in the Daily Record also had something to say about Marks & Spencer's new range of "dirty knicks and undies in size 22," with some sound advice to the mature and over-sized women who buy them. "Sadly, there comes a time in every woman's life, no matter how she looked in her youth, when she has to admit - or be told - that her time for long hair, low necklines, short skirts AND sexy undies, is way behind her." 'Sexfinder General' Monsignor Tom Connolly, spokesman for the Catholic Church in Scotland on all matters sexual, doesn't like director Robert Wainwright's new film, Stigmata. So neither should we! It won't be released in the UK until next year but our self appointed moral regulator has "called for Glasgow City Council's licensing board to set an example by banning the film from city cinemas." The Daily Record reminded us that "the board are renowned for their strict stance - they banned Martin Scorsese's controversial 1988 movie The Last Temptation of Christ and Monty Python's religious spoof, The Life of Brian." The 'Sexfinder General' decided: "Glasgow people in the past have shown themselves far too sensible and they don't go to films like this." Did they have a choice? Thank you so much. Now fuck off! We don't need yet another board of moral censors or some self-appointed nanny to tell us what we can or cannot see! The 'Sexfinder General' told the Daily Record that "a film like this encourages and excites violence from the type of people who do want to go and see it. I have every faith that the licensing authority will be much too sensible to let this film be shown." Claims that The Herald was anti-Catholic have ruffled more feathers than any claim it is homophobic and there is much more evidence of that. Too many sexual issues have been reported conservatively, dishonestly, unfairly and without balance. Take Cardinal Winning's blast against "popular culture" in The Herald. In yet another plea for a return to traditional values, Winning accused society of "picking and mixing its moral principles" and claimed the Roman Catholic Church is finding it difficult to survive in a democratic society! (Ah, let's get back to the good old days, eh? When Winning studied in Rome during the forties and Pope Pius XII, was preparing the ground that would lay him open to accusations of harbouring pro-Nazi sympathisers and doing nothing when Hitler gassed the Jews. Winning was reported in the Scottish Daily Mail defending Pope Pius XII, saying he was "misunderstood" and having "one foot in this world and the other already in heaven)." Where was the balance of opinion in The Herald? Didn't Bishop Holloway, after expressing his liberal views on sex, find himself up against the published criticisms of the whole gamut of moral arbiters? Greasy homophobes like Stewart Lamont are at home in The Herald. He knows as much about gay politics as he does about the latest single from Boyzone. And it shows. His piece on Michael Portillo's 'coming out' read like Ian Paisley doing a piece on Gerry Adams. Stewart Lamont, scoffed that "gay pride people" (sic), were "proud of everything that is gay, whether it be the sick types who lurk in toilets or the promiscuous pick-ups in gay bars which sadly are part of 'community' life. They want to be accepted just as they are. Sounds great..," he bitched. Until, goodness, me! What if 'straights' "went looking for a date outside the ladies' loo." Arsehole! Lamont set about justifying Michael Portillo's hypocrisy: covering up his 'under-age' sex whilst supporting an unequal age of consent and preventing gays serving in the armed forces. "It is perfectly possible to have a liking for alcohol but to abstain from it," he waffled. He thought Portaloo had the "right" to have his "privacy respected. It is not as though (he is) out trawling Clapham Common at night." And get this! Lamont thought, "by opening politicians' bedrooms to the scrutiny of the public" we somehow release "a demon." Then, (gasp)! "The whole of society becomes obsessed with deviant sex." His arguments were Victorian. All about sweeping 'it' under the carpet and sticking to the fixed heterosexual values of a prescribed moral code. "Sexuality is a private matter," he reminded us. To be locked away "in the privacy of the bedroom of course, where it belongs." He went on to highlight those familiar stereotypes "who force the question of 'gay rights'" and "a very successful attempt to promote homosexual lifestyles through Channel 4 television programmes." He exploited otherwise healthy divisions within the gay community, targeting those "who bandy about the word 'community' as if they had a mandate from all the members of the minority they purport to represent." I look forward to seeing this balanced by Peter Tatchell's column in The Herald! No, just fasten your stays, editor Harry Reid, I'm only kidding! John Macleod is another Herald columnist with a reprehensible record in the Scottish Media Monitor. Just 12 weeks after the brutal murder of Michael Doran in Glasgow's Queen's Park and in response to comedian Michael Barrymore admitting he was gay, Macleod focused on "forbidden desires," describing gays as "unnatural, dangerous" and "evil." He linked homosexuality to "promiscuity, instability, neurosis, substance abuse, suicide, untold depths of degradation, misery, self-loathing" and found us "simply not equipped to live." This was apparently "borne out by study upon study." (Omitting to say of course that those discredited studies were both conducted and funded by right-wing American Christian groups). The tramp of Jesus-in-jackboots across the pages of a newspaper not shy of muscular Christianity didn't stop there. Macleod praised closets who were "persuaded that expression of (homosexuality) is absolutely and in all circumstances wrong" with the pronouncement that "theirs, in the end, is lasting fame and glory. Theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven" He whinged that Michael Barrymore's "spectacular declaration forces our attention, yet again, to homosexuality. The gay lobby can scarcely believe their luck. A new star has joined their ranks and not a stereotypical flounce, like Larry Grayson; not a barbed lounge-lizard like Noel Coward; not such a glorious pansy as Julian Clary; not even such a manifest lump of evil as the late Derek Jarman, but a popular, straight-acting, wholesome family entertainer. And the gay lobby will make the most of it." John Macleod even suggested, when Ron Davies was caught on Clapham Common that "perhaps, (the gossip) would cease only if Ron Davies were obligingly to kill himself." Over Peter Mandelson's outing on Newsnight, he suggested: "I suspect the incident caused him dreadful private pain," then added, "he has not obligingly killed himself." And of gays in government..? "Many, of course, hold sincerely that the presence of open homosexuals in Government is the end of civilisation as we know it, and a judgement on the land. The merits of that I leave aside." For the past couple of years, The Herald has featured columnists who have been prepared to show World AIDS Day in a negative light. John Macleod wrote: "It has fallen to me to write a column for World Aids Day" before turning on some of AIDS' more prolific victims: "Wicked men like Derek Jarman" and "the absurd Liberace." But, John Macleod is gay. When challenged, he e-mailed me to say: "I will come out in my own time and in my own way and on my own terms and not at the behest of the likes of you." He offered the following apology for publication in ScotsGay, a magazine he is "doubtful if the majority - even a plurality - of Scotland's gay population read." "Thanks for drawing my attention to a column I wrote in The Herald in September 1995, following the 'outing' of Michael Barrymore, in which I wrote of homosexuality in violent and hysterical terms and - which seems especially to have left abiding hurt and anger - used the phrase "gays are simply not equipped to live." Four years feels like a lifetime ago, now, and I have travelled much in my intellectual and emotional life. Many have followed my journeying through my weekly column and it will be apparent my attitudes have changed in many respects. I unequivocally apologise for the offensive and absurd comments in that column and in others of similar vein: I think there were comparable beauties in December 1991 and May 1993. I hope anyone hurt by these - and I am thinking especially of young people in isolated, rural and perhaps unco guid Scottish communities - will forgive me. I have always written what I believe to be true; and I have never been ashamed to put my name to any article, written truly in a specific time and place. For this authenticity I do not apologise." While this apology was being prepared for publication in ScotsGay, he used his column to turn on "militant gay activists" describing us as "thugs of Scotland." There are those who will argue that John Macleod is entitled to express whatever view on the subject of homosexuality he so chooses. Maybe. In choosing to 'out' him I have been accused of destroying lives to get what I want, of "trophy-hunting." If that were the case, there are the notches from two pop stars and a top cop on my bedpost. For 'outing' such an arrogant and volatile superstitionist I don't expect thanks, let alone a trophy! Be absolutely clear about this: John Macleod holds a position of enormous privilege. He writes for The Herald. This is an extremely influential newspaper that does nothing to balance its frequent homophobic outbursts other than for its editor - Macleod's chum, Harry Reid - to offer publication of the odd readers' letter. Just how confident John Macleod is to be able to exercise that special privilege is endorsed by his threat to me: "Out me if you choose. I will deal with you in The Herald. I will share with all Scotland how the self-appointed princes of the 'gay community' behave." I should be very flattered, but all I do is compile a column that monitors the treatment of sexuality in the Scottish media in the only magazine brave enough to print it. After having seen the suicides, beatings and arrests that media homophobia has licensed, (three of my friends have been murdered in separate incidents), what else is there to do but expose The Herald's hypocrisy and 'out' John Macleod once and for all? "A 14-year-old boy Has been put on the pervs register" by a court in Paisley, we are informed by the Scottish Sun. "He will stay at a special school until he is sentenced next month." The lad was discovered playing 'doctors and nurses' with his eight-year-old cousin. His defence counsel blamed the incident on sex education lessons which apparently "seemed to stimulate interest on his part in sexual matters." The Catholic bishop's have spelt out a new approach to sex education in their schools. It is the responsibility of parents, they say. Now what will that entail, I wonder: A. Dad demonstrating his 10 best positions for poking your ma? B. Having Dobbin's ridiculously sized hard-on cross-referenced by the pollination of Nasturtiums? Or, C. Dad looking up from his paper and telling you to go and ask your ma? The 'Sexfinder General' Father Tom Connolly told the Sunday Mail: "I'm sure many parents will welcome this document." Just what planet is he on? Before the tabloid finished wrapping up that report, the Sunday Mail quickly added how: "gay sex and abuse of drugs and alcohol will also come under the spotlight." Asked Gary Keown in the Sunday Mail. * Keown the Clown's opinion of Scottish Women's Aid and Zero Tolerance: "A menace.. Disband.. Lighten up and stop getting your knickers in a twist. Like so many other terms of identity these days, 'Scottish', 'Gay', and 'Lesbian' have become contested territory, 'debatable ground'. There are questions of what, or who defines 'Scottish Gay and Lesbian Theatre' (is it something only gays and lesbians can do?) and of who, or what defines 'gay' and 'lesbian'. In the end, rather than trying to present a portmanteau creature called 'Scottish Gay and Lesbian Theatre', the most important task seemed to be that of beginning to map out four main areas of identity - Scottish, Gay, Lesbian, and Playwright - and the way in which they do or don't overlap. What does being gay in Scotland mean? The early gay and lesbian movement in Scotland arrived late in comparison to, for example, England and the USA. When the first homophile meeting in Scotland took place in Glasgow in February 1969, the seminal movement of the modern movement, the Stonewall riots, was only five months away. But the first organisation to be called gay was the SMG (Scottish Minorities Group) which was founded in 1969. The founding group took the name SMG because they felt the word 'homosexual' might intimidate people and from the beginning, SMG was an Organisation for, rather than exclusively of homosexuals. The work of the group which in the 1970s increased its membership, can be broken down into three areas: counselling and befriending, campaigning, and social activities. The movement suffered a steep decline in fortunes in the early 1980s. Many of the gay groups disappeared and SMG's membership declined rapidly. Having been active, and in its own terms successful, throughout the 1970s and then experiencing a drastic decline in membership in the 1980s, SMG nonetheless could be said to have prepared the way for a number of successful "off shoots". Whereas, during the 1970s SMG had sought, with varying success, to be all things to all homosexuals, the 1980s saw the development of Gay and Lesbian Switch-boards, the establishment of a Gay and Lesbian Bookshop and of Scottish Aids Monitor (SAM) - all independent of SMG. Since the creation of the first gay organisation in 1969, a great deal has changed for gays. Decriminalisation has led to a widespread lesbian and gay scene in Scotland. Many lesbians and gays can live a much more 'out' existence, inspired also by 'out' lesbian and gay singers, and actors. Images of lesbians and gays are available on TV, theatre and film. Trade Unions have taken on a commitment to the rights of lesbian and gay workers and many more people than in the past can be open about their sexuality at their place of work. These and other gains have only come about through the struggle of lesbian and gay activists demanding both a place in society and that society change to meet their needs. There are, it seems to me, some very intriguing parallels between being Scottish and being lesbian or gay. Both are minority experiences sustained in the face of a massive hegemonic presence: heterosexuality and English domination. Graeme Woolaston in his insightful essay "Lesbians and Gays in the Scottish Republic" [1] written about seven years ago problematises the whole concept of a Scottish Republic in which gays and lesbians could be free and could express freely their ideas and feelings. He also argues that Scottish gays and lesbians are characterised by a 'self-doubt' since they don't believe that Scotland can be free. But this problem is now old-fashioned and the belief that Scottish people, Scots, and Scottish artistic production are not as qualified as the English counterparts are, has become out of date. We now have the Scottish Parliament which - we hope - will give more freedom and pride to Scottish homosexuals. And how can you give pride to people? The identical dilemma faces gay activists and Scottish nationalists. One area of Scottish gay life which is encouragingly alive and kicking is artistic self-expression, especially by younger writers. Gays have gained a place in the society particularly through artistic production. Here in Scotland we have many examples of gay culture and the way it has influenced the social life. One of the purposes of this paper is also to consider gay and lesbian theatre in Scotland and in particular to look at the ways playwrights have used theatrical expressions in their representation and interpretation of the Scottish homosexual experience. The title of this article is inspired by the title of a play by the Glaswegian playwright John Binnie. He is the artistic director of one of the most important Scottish theatre companies: Clyde Unity Theatre. Based in Glasgow, the company staged its first production in 1986 and since then it has built up a programme of work which is unique in Scottish theatre. Clyde Unity Theatre claims to present a theatre reflecting ordinary men and women in Scotland and the plays contain social issues such as sexuality, health, race and the position of women in the Scottish society. Clyde Unity Theatre is the heir of Glasgow Unity Theatre, and Clyde's first professional production, The Lambs of God is a remake of the 1948 original production staged by Glasgow Unity. But it is with Mum, Dad, There's something I've got to tell you that Clyde Unity Theatre started its innovative programme in Scottish Drama. This is also the first play by John Binnie. He wrote it in 1986 for his drama course at Glasgow University and describes the coming-out of a young eighteen-year-old Scots chap. The play is characterised by a series of monologues of the main character Colin, who is unable to tell his parents he is gay until the last scene. Colin is constantly searching his, 'gay" identity and the will to tell his parents the truth. This aspect is also autobiographic because Binnie hadn't come out to his parents yet when he wrote that play. Writing this play - he says - he decided to tell mum and dad the truth. The autobiographical aspects in Binnie's plays have often been criticised but very often it is easier for a playwright to write about facts and situations he or she knows and the ability of the playwright is to rearrange the events in order to make impossible situations possible and vice versa. Colin is conscious of his gayness and considers unfair that all his friends know he is gay while his parents ignore his homosexuality, "it was time for them to be informed" (p. 19). The play opens with a sort of religious incipit: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep " The play is built upon homosexuality and it fits quite well in this history of the human being. Homosexuality remains in the foreground in all the play, in the sense that there are some references to homosexuality in general as well as to Colin's personal homosexuality. Colin gives vent to his feelings and to his sexual attractions, never falling into obscenity. He describes his first homosexual experience, "..it had been the first time a man touched my naked body - as I lay there that summer's day, under the blue, cloudless sky with the hot sun beating down upon me.." (p. 16), when he first went to a gay pub, and when he went to the meeting of a gay club at university. When at the end of the play Colin tells his parents he is gay his father's reaction is tragic: ".. Obviously I can never look on him in the same way as before. He is no the son I thought I brought into the world." (p. 24) The mother's reaction is more positive and her only hope is that Colin is happy: "I wish my son wasn't a homosexual, but he is. I feel sorry for him more than hurt for myself. It's no an easy life-all those underground hangouts with dirty old men, having to hide it from the rest of the world, and never to have any children-no, it's certainly not nice. It's his life and I only hope he's happy." (p.24) With this coming-out piece, Binnie established himself as a Scottish gay playwright. In Killing Me Softly (1987), Binnie charts the friendship between two teenagers - gay Tim and straight Lil. This second play is certainly different from the previous one. The theme of friendship has always been central to Binnie's life as well as to his plays. Sometimes it is easier for gay men to be intimate and sharing with women; perhaps because there is no sexual threat. In Killing Me Softly, the gay/straight relationship is central to the play, and again the male character Tim hasn't come out to his family yet, and Lil says: "Tim, you'll never be a complete person 'till you have informed the ones you love of your true inclinations .." (p. 5). Tim is different from Colin; he doesn't want to tell his family he is gay, "it is none of their business" - he says - and even when his mother asks him about his homosexuality, he denies. Colin and Tim are different and they have been put into two different environments: the first play is centred on the community and on the family, while in the second the family is in the background and AIDS, which is revealed towards the end of the last scene, is nonetheless central to the play. The mother is seen in both plays as a positive character; she is sympathetic and understanding. In Killing me Softly the father is dead but he is substituted by Tim's brother Michael, who behaves like a narrow-minded and politically-correct character: " .. I'm not sharing the same room with him (Tim) anymore, no, or the same dishes .." When Tim discovers he's affected by AIDS, he doesn't react. He remains in the bathroom and doesn't speak to anyone. Closing the door of the bathroom is like closing the door of the life and at the end of the play we don't know anything about Tim's future, we can just guess. The main topic of this play, the disease, has been widely used by other playwrights to write plays about. Not only theatre has been influenced by it. The musical Contracts produced by a gay and lesbian drama group at the Theatre Workshop in Edinburgh is structurally similar to Binnie's play. It was written by Judith Tatton and Leigh Nicoll, both active members of Stonewall Youth Project, a youth group based in Edinburgh for gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. The musical was first staged last year on World AIDS Day at the Netherbow Centre and has just been restaged during this year's Fringe Festival. Contracts is about AIDS; it was conceived while Judith was staying at "Stopover", a hostel for homeless young people. The main character, Luke, discovers he is affected by AIDS. After this terrible news his life changes and the musical ends with the tragic conclusion of Luke's life, death. The disease, but from another perspective is charted in Wasting Reality by Ian Brown. The play is built upon a series of flashbacks since it is the story of Michael, who is dead but his persona is constantly brought in the foreground by the words of the family, of the father in particular. Only towards the end of the first scene we know that Michael died of AIDS and that he was gay: "he is dead .. he wes ill .. it wes his AIDS .. he didnae need to die.. Michael wes gay" (p. 5ff.). In all these AIDS-related plays there is at least one character who is not sympathetic and considers the 'problem' from a politically-correct point of view: in Killing Me Softly there is Michael, and in Wasting Reality there is Morag, Michael's sister, who didn't want to see her brother when he was about to die. They are both representatives of the homophobic heterosexual community but they soon change their points of view. Despite their negative attitude towards gay people, Morag and Michael change opinions; at the end of each play they are both more mature, "a little older", using the title of another play by Binnie. A Little Older written and staged in 1992, was the winner of the Fringe Festival. It was inspired, as Binnie says, by an accident his father had some months before. In this play Sandy and Isla are best friends. Isla has crashed through a car windscreen and lost her memory. Sandy goes to hospital and tries to help her remember. Once again, friendship and memory are central to the play. Isla doesn't remember the past and it seems she doesn't want to remember. She listens to Sandy's stories and tries to build up her new identity. Like Colin and Tim, Isla is still looking for her identity, gay or straight, and the accident has been a sort of scapegoat for this quest. Telling her the stories, Sandy helps her create her new self and at the end of the play Isla wants to hear another "happy story", which is the story of her life and of their friendship leading to maturity, and responsibility, and apparently to the identity of the human being: "we're older now, we've responsibilities" (page 21)- admits Isla towards the end of the last scene. "Celebrating the Past" could be the motto of mct theatre company from Glasgow. This is one of the youngest theatre companies in Scotland. It is the first Scottish gay and lesbian theatre company and was set up at the beginning of 1996 by Christopher Deans, Lorenzo Mele, and Rachel Jury. Their first play, Molly's Collar and Tie (1997), written by Chris Deans and directed by Lorenzo Mele, can be considered a history of the gay and lesbian experience in Scotland. It is, in the words of the company, a celebration of Scottish Queerness. Chris Deans is the artistic director of mct; in his short but intense career he has helped the Scottish gay and lesbian community express itself through the stage. Chris studied theatre and after a period of teaching in various European cities understood that theatre was "his way" and decided to work first with 7:84, and after with mct. He decided to set up his theatre company in Scotland because he has always wanted to address specifically the Scottish gay identity, as opposed to an international gay identity, or even an English gay identity. Scottish people - he says - are constantly asking about identity, and gay drama fits quite nicely into this sphere, and asks very similar questions. The title of mct's first production derives from old slang words for gay men and women. The play is episodic in form, and as a whole it is a queer history of Scotland. Linked by two contemporary characters, the Drag Man, and the Drumming Woman, the play relates various historic tales of gay and lesbian experience. These include the affair James VI of Scotland had with Lord Lennox, and the remarkable story of Murray Hall, a 19th-century Scottish woman who upped sticks and reincarnated herself in New York as a successful businessman. The play also contains stories of personal experiences of ordinary people: Jimmy who confesses the priest he did "dirty things with men" in Tollcross Park, Glasgow; the story of Gerrie who has been "a nun, a wife, a mother and a dyke". She is an example of what I would describe quest for identity. In her life, Gerrie has always looked for her perfect self. "Throughout, I've always tried to say my truth and search for things of value: I've always wanted to touch the deepest part of myself." (p. 20) At the end of the scene she says: "I feel now that I have touched the deepest part of myself and found my own truth". Gerrie, opposed to Isla in A Little Older, has undergone various experiences and they have helped her understand her identity; personal experience for Gerrie is nonetheless better than Isla's second-hand experience. Historical episodes are the description of the affair King James VI of Scotland had with Lord Lennox and "the strange case of Murray Hall". In both episodes we can see how strong was the society in those periods. James VI is accused of "having shared intimacies normally reserved for the rights of man and woman within a married state." (page 14). Having been accused of homosexuality how could the King "stand before God as his trusted subject?" (page 15). James doesn't want to come to terms with his community and asks his lover to leave Scotland and return to France. This tragic conclusion of the love story is repeated in Murray Hall's story in which Mary Anderson (alias Murray Hall) has to leave Scotland because it has been discovered she is not a man, but a woman. The comments of the community are negative and offensive: "It's a freak of nature, it should be locked and the key thrown away" (page 44). After this, (s)he leaves Scotland and goes to America where (s)he lives as a man until her/his death. In America Murray lives as a man, behaves like a man, has love stories, marries Celia and adopts a girl, Minnie. The play ends with the formation of Scottish Minorities Group (SMG) in 1969. It started with James VI who lived in the sixteenth century and concludes with the SMG which was formed about twenty years ago. For the description of the formation of the group, MCT used the late Ian Dunn as the main performer. Ian was a central figure in gay political and social activism for thirty years. In Molly's Collar and Tie, Ian told his own story and from his words we can understand that he wanted to fight for finding Scotland's "own voice" (page 71). The final march of the Drag Man and Drumming Woman clearly identifies Scotland as the country where all these stories have taken place; both characters seem loving it, and what they say is a sort of hymn for Scotland: "Looking/ Wandering/ My body will never falter when crossing this land/ touching it/ stamping and pressing my feet down hard/ making my mark/ saying I've been here/ and there and every bloody where/ I've touched your grass, your hills, your sky/ I've swam in your lochs/ still and deep they were/ and as I bathed I looked above me/ breathed in the air of this country/ felt it deep within my lungs/ held it there for the longest of times/ never letting go/ till it seeped into every pore." (p. 72) In this analysis of homosexual theatre in Scotland, women have been partially left out. Why? Although fluctuating over the years, from an analysis of SMG's membership figures the proportion of women involved throughout its existence has generally been somewhere between 10-20% of the membership. This was so even when women had their own space in the Edinburgh centre and had close to 50% of pages in "Gay Scotland". The reasons for the relatively small number of women involved in the movement are many. It may be argued that the structure of SMG favoured men who might be more conversant with that mode of operation. The fact that a major part of the political work was the struggle for the decriminalisation of gay male activity could be seen as largely irrelevant to women. Because of sexism within the lesbian and gay movement, some women would find that they identified more with the "straight" women's movement rather than spending their energy in the battles between gay men and lesbians. This primary reason could be also applied for the lack of a solid tradition of Lesbian Theatre in Scotland. Nonetheless this situation has changed in the last ten years. Lesbians in Scotland have started to express their voices; in 1991 Suzanne Dance founded WITCH (Women's Theatre Group) which staged some lesbian plays; Natalie Wilson, Associate Director at mct, founded a lesbian drama group called Finger Licks and their first production was staged in November 1998 during Glasgay! Can only lesbians write lesbian plays? This is a question which from time to time reappears. I think that not only lesbians can write lesbian plays, as not only gays can write gay plays. In 1993 Binnie explored the field of lesbianism and wrote Accustomed To Her Face. It is a lesbian play, for which Clyde Unity Theatre won the Edinburgh Fringe Award. The play toured around Scotland, and went also down to England. In this play, the actors 'are speaking of what they know - Scotland, the desperate poverty of its cities, love, pride, and commitment.' There are three characters in the play: Basher, Maxy, and the American Erin. Basher is as her name suggests; she has been a fighter all her life. When she was a child she fought to keep her family together. She is a hard woman with a hard spirit and has never time for tenderness. Maxy is English but she has lived in Scotland since she was a baby. Maxy and Basher are friends and they put Erin up. She is American and comes to Scotland for a holiday romance as well as for searching her Scottish roots. Erin is a tanned, beautiful and politically-correct woman. Accustomed To Her Face is a play accurately built with words which are united one by the other. The words give voice to the characters who reflect the problems of the community and contain a damning portrait of two desperate and de-prived women. Only love and laugh is still alive in both of them. The life they must live in, is not very easy; towards the end of the play Basher admits "if only life was as simple as a song". Their voices are simple, they come from the heart and they should reflect the feelings and the harmony as well as the tensions and problems of the human being. Maxy and Basher live in this Scottish community and when Erin arrives in Scotland they realise that this community is not big enough for them. Basher and Maxy reflect the poverty and depression of the west of Scotland and certainly Erin, representing the wealth of the American community, breaks into their lives trying to create a new world for the two Scottish women. Another Scottish lesbian playwright who has centred most of her plays on the community, with particular reference to the Scottish community, is Alison Smith; in her plays she presents a community as both ritualised and unstable. Smith started writing plays when she was a postgraduate in Cambridge and three of her works were staged at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. AU her plays are for women and about women; in The Dance (1988) there is only one actress who plays three roles: the Maiden, the Mother, and the Hag, which are the traditional Scottish labels for the three stages of the female identity. At the end of the play the Hag leaps into the position occupied by the Maiden at the beginning completing the cycle. It is, in the words of Suzanne Dance, "a great cycle of lives - within a circle of life, a cycle, a great wheel, inside a wheel" [2]. The cycle mentioned by Dance is the cycle of identity and that of the life which often recur the above-analysed plays. Speaking of a Scottish identity it is also a traditional symbol of Scottish folklore connecting the past with the present passing through life and death. In her plays, as well as in her prose fiction, Smith problematises how lesbianism is socially contextualised; how lesbian experience is put into Scottishness, and with her plays she tries to open up rather than closing down discussion about sexual difference in Scotland. At the end of the twentieth century here in Scotland discussion of issues particularly about sexual difference is something which Scots are beginning to be able to do. What is important for gays and lesbians is to become visible, and the starting point is that "we have become visible to ourselves" as Iona McGregor admits in her insightful essay "Visibility Eighties Rising" [3]. Surely - she concludes - the worst oppression is self-oppression. In the introduction to Polygon's second collection of gay and lesbian writing from Scotland The Crazy Jig, McGregor asks: "Must gay writers assert their identity in order to avoid being deconstructed into the heterosexual majority?" Chris Deans of mct might have answered this question saying that what is important for a gay playwright is to name himself rather than accepting easy categorisation by other people. I don't actually know the happy couple, but was asked to give them a mention. Some of you love to make derisory comments about the whole gay marriage thing, as the whole idea of monogamy and commitment is anathema to yer average poof. I get the feeling that for many of you lot, this is nothing more than a smokescreen to cover up the fact that you can't get a man of your own, or that your own "open" relationships are invariably dead ones. Anyway, I hope everything goes well for them on their big day. Austins is pulling them in since re-opening, and has forced some of its competitors to start dropping prices (to little avail it would seem). We can tell how the pubs are doing by the number of copies of ScotsGay they shift, and Austins moved 300 last month -- a good bit more than the Hope Street venue. Various rumours are doing the rounds about what will happen with the basement -- another bar, a cabaret club, restaurant or nightclub depending on who you listen to. The boss remains tight-lipped about his plans for the moment, so we'll just have to wait and see! Over the past couple of weeks, the bar has had more finishing touches and looks quite continental with bottles of wine, packets of pasta, biscuits and other stuff adorning the display cabinets. What next? Smoked sausages, cheeses and dead rabbits hanging from the ceiling? If you want to see how popular it is, check out the Pub and Club ratings. Colin pointed out that Austins is Glasgow's only gay owned pub -- quite surprising for a city this size. This will all change when Brian opens up his pubs and club, but that still looks like being 9 months away. The Tom Robinson benefit concert went ahead in the GGLC, with further entertainment from Robert and May Miller. May was on form. She cracked jokes, took the piss out of the audience and threw in a few anecdotes for good measure. I take it she doesn't think much of Cher! Tom's set included the familiar hits, a few updated for the nineties, along with some new material, but of course it was "Glad to be Gay" which went down best. Despite it being a cold wet Monday night, the event was well attended, and all proceeds went to centre funds. It was an older crowd in the audience, and judging by how many knew the words to the songs, I guess that some of them were around when they first came out. The whole evening took me back to my student days back in the late 70s, when "Glad to be Gay" was played in the gay discos. I particularly liked the updated version of "Power in the darkness" about how we now have the freedom to pay over the top bar prices; the freedom to listen to yet more talentless drag queens trotting out the same old repertoire; the freedom to dance to yet another boyband who've cottoned on to the pink pound; the freedom to be ripped off by straight businesses cashing in on our spending power, and of course the freedom to all look and dress the same! And now the monthly pub and club ratings. For first-time readers, these are determined by votes of the Glasgow LGBT community sent in via my website and are now considered to be sufficiently important that at least one national organisation is now keeping a close watch on the choices of the Glasgow scene!! Funnily enough, 2 attempts were made last month, and 3 so far this month, to fiddle the votes for Delmonicas (All IPs and votes on file). ScotsGay gets more complaints about Dels than all other venues in Scotland combined! (letters on file), so the prospect of them ever being voted BEST PUB is quite ludicrous! So, what did you all vote for this month? The big shock was that Austins knocked The Waterloo off its regular top spot for BEST PUB, with 33% of all votes cast, although The Waterloo was a close second with 30%. No matter, they are both worthy adversaries, and other venue owners should worry more about the bottom positions in the BEST PUB AWARDS than who came top. The Once Dismal Cafe moved up the ratings and actually got 3%, but the Poo did even WORSE than last month, failing to register ANY votes at all!! Best Club Night went to Trade with 44% of all the votes, and Bennets won best Club again with 95%. The Waterloo won Best Service at 48%, with The Poo and Dels sharing bottom position at 1% each. Interestingly, the Goldilocks Pub and Club Awards have been shamelessly copied by another website. Hang your head in SHAME Gordon Valentine, and don't dare go calling yourself a webmaster until you create your own ORIGINAL work, rather than downloading mine and passing it off as your own. Still, I suppose that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Anybody else notice the low-key response in the straight press to the latest figures regarding HIV infection in Glasgow? The majority of new cases are due to unsafe heterosexual intercourse. Does this now mean that HIV is now the straight plague, the price to pay for their depraved behaviour, or God's Judgement against heterosexuals? Don't laugh- these arguments were used against us until recently. I sincerely hope the breeders get their act together, and finally wake up to the fact that the outbreak in the straight community was inevitable, and they are now paying the price for pretending otherwise. If you're a gay guy, take comfort in the fact that Steve Retson, Phace West and other organizations mean you'll always have access to condoms and safer sex information. Use them!! And remember the golden rule of gay shagging - FUCK SAFER, OR FUCK OFF!! Clone Zone is back in extended premises in the GGLC, after a brief spell upstairs while the builders were in. Robin has re-arranged the layout to increase the range, which now includes a selection of lesbian oriented books, more videos, DVDs, and a greater choice of tops (fashion tops that is- the only kind in Glasgow apart from myself and a very few others). You can also stock up on Christmas cards, including the Crusaid Charity range, and calendars as these are now available. An increased range of mags is on the extended shelf space, so you now have a greater selection of wanking material. If you've been wondering why certain faces have been missing from the saunas recently, it appears that a mass exodus to Edinburgh has taken place. I keep hearing the same complaints that Centurion is cold and dirty and The Lane is over-priced for the basic facilities that Bodger Bob offers. I have also heard moans about the 50% increase in Centurion's Sunday entry price. No surprise, then, that a lot of you have taken up ScotRail's offer of a ukp7 return ticket through to the capital to check out No 18 and The Town House. I hope to do the same shortly. From what I've heard so far, The Town House's luxurious facilities are going down well with a lot of the Glasgow sauna queens. The ABBA revival night was well attended and over ukp300 was raised for the GGLC. I got a few pix, but had camera problems, so not many photos came out. Like the first ABBA night, the twinkies seemed to have the greatest fun, despite being born long after the ABBA era. I know some froots are really into the whole ABBA thing, but even I was surprised by DJ Walter's dedication. O.K, so the tattoo is a bit of a giveaway, but did you know he has a copy of everything they ever released? Probably videoed the whole ABBA day on TV recently, too. The students are back, making for pleasant viewing both in the street and on the scene. A couple have even discovered the pleasure of the flesh down at the Riverside cruising area. They were all at a gay and lesbian fresher fair at Liberty one Monday. It was the best-kept secret on the scene and some were unhappy at not getting an invite. Apparently one voluntary group pulled out of the deal at the last minute, causing grief for the organiser and creating yet another 'service provider' with whom they are not best pleased. Now who could that be? Dundee Outreach Team provided a Safe Sex stall and finger buffet. In early January it is hoped to have an open meeting to discuss the possibility of having a Pride event in Dundee. This is not so strange an idea as numbers on the local scene have increased. The political spectrum has altered on the local council with at least one gay councillor, and most gay organisations are working well together. Perhaps a switch of Chairmoaner at one particular group might help proceedings! Christmas and the New Year are fast approaching and I would have loved to have given you a scene run down of what's happening where and when. Unfortunately, Charlie is being very tight-lipped about what is going on in his pub, even about the opening hours. the scene still awaits the 'forthcoming attractions' which he advertised extensively in Boyz newspaper when he opened. Along at Liberty and Bar XS, they have just launched their festive entertainment programme. The list of opening hours varies -- we suggest you get a copy from them -- but they will be open every evening, including January 1st 2000. His show was a little OTT in audience participation. I hear the club owner had to reassure one of the patrons that no cameras had been used whilst he was blindfolded. You would have needed a very large lens to zoom in on that chipolata. There was a full house for Hazell Dean. She was fabulous and was interviewed on Radio Tay after the show. The new shelf, sorry, stage helped more people see her. Wish they'd had it for Hannah Jones. Surreal Bastille has been pulling them in at her karaoke sessions on Wednesdays now that she's over her latest sex-change operation. Madam Grump has been little-seen in Dundee, but was spotted in Glasgow for the Interpride conference, and also in Edinburgh a few times. She claims her expansion into Glasgow is being reconsidered and that Edinburgh is now being considered. We suspect red herrings. One expansion we do know about is her waistline -- no doubt there! A planning application in the local paper confirms rumours that the straight owners of Aberdeen's gay nightspot are to change their Dundee Fantasy club for gays or raves. First of all the transition from the Cats Whiskers to Giles Cafe Bar has gone very smoothly. With the layout of the Cats changing to one large bar room it was impractical to continue to use it as our venue and so the upstairs bar in the Giles has been adopted as 'home'. There have been two meetings in the new place with the turnout looking very positive indeed. If you're interested in coming along we are there every second Wednesday, in the upstairs bar (it is partitioned off as a 'private function') and everyone is very relaxed and the staff are great. Talking of clan gatherings there have been a few suggestions for up and coming events such as bus trips to Blackpool and Christmas shopping trips to London... although it'll be one heck of a trek back north clutching all those bags from Harrods and Harvey Nick's. Still you could always go one better and take advantage of the excursion to Amsterdam, this is unlikely to be a shopping trip however as its not the kind of place you return from with something to show for your money! (Unless your mate's a doctor...!) If none of the above take your fancy how about Disneyland Paris in February/March time? It's the only time in the Disney calendar that the staff jump at the chance to wear one of those daft outfits just to keep warm in the snow...and the closest you're ever likely to get to meeting a wicked queen! No, really. Other events nearer home include a Hallowe'en night-out, a day out to Landmark (that's the place in the trees, I mean, not somewhere you can pick-up a new suite), Gay Awareness Week at Findhorn and fun for all the family at two Pantos. Fun was once again had at the latest party down Jollity Farm, with a smaller than normal turn-out allowing more room for boisterous behaviour, some of which involved the use of offensive weapons such as balloons and, er, pillows. Still no-one has learnt at these occasions to lock up Charlie and Brett, in separate rooms, as yet again they were free to display all manner of dirty and (it says here) provocative dance routines for all to witness, gathering quite a crowd especially for the 'pulsating over and under [the stairs] routine'. Several of the on-lookers have needed counselling since. After this sight many party-goers resorted to drag, producing a prince, a princess, the odd fairy, a couple of ugly toads, several queens, a cuddly toy and a fondue set. No expense was spared with some changing into 2 or 3 different costumes, to suit the mood, of course. The night was rounded off with a limp selection of videos of male interest (though you can bet your life it wasn't Big Boobs Volume 2) but it stopped the fighting and got everyone's attention. However, with Dave shouting at every new action sequence, "I've done that!", it was definitely time to go! You know you just can't turn on the telly nowadays without the fear of seeing horrific scenes such as war, murder, violence or a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence invading your screen. Sister Bobby from the Convent of Moravia was spotted in Channel 4's 'Edinburgh or Bust' along with some of the other sisters ("and me!" -- Novice Brother Bimbo del Doppio Senso), giving out two of their 'special' awards. The first one to the controversial play Corpus Christi and the other to a gentleman known as The Divine David whose show has been one of the most popular during the festival. The whole shebang was presented by the delightful Mariella Frostrup who loves nothing more than a good rant about art, politics and a little known thing called sexual deviancy. Channel 4 have also to be praised for the wonderful timing of this episode as it coincided with Sister Athletica being out of the country...serves her right for being an alleged slapper ("Alleged? Shome Mishtake Here Shurely!" -- Ed) in San Francisco ("and the rest" -- NBBdDS) but then, even she wouldn't have been allowed on Channel 4! Another major event coming up, and probably the biggest fund-raising gig of its time in Aberdeen, is "When Tribes Walked", to be held in the beach ballroom on Friday November the 26th, in the run up to World AIDS Day. Proceeds will be going to Milestone House in Edinburgh, which is Scotland's AIDS hospice, covering the whole of Scotland. The 1,000 capacity event is set to be a good one, with DJ's such as Alan & Maggie who many will know from Joy in Edinburgh, and its spin-off, Sweet! in Aberdeen, which ran a few years ago. Alongside them on the line-up is Blu Peter, who would have appeared to have been in Aberdeen quite a lot recently. In addition to that, there will be other, as yet unconfirmed DJs appearing. Hours are 10-2 and the door tax is ukp10, but I would have no hesitation in paying that for such a worthwhile cause. Shadows, the pub that has been causing rather a lot of controversy on the scene of late, is now under new management. It's a "mixed" pub this time, and I have been informed there will be various drinks promotions on the go, as well a DJ on a Saturday night too. For any further information, contact Shadows. Fang's publishing house was fined an additional 2,000 yuan. Although the book did not name plaintiff Xu Yanguang, it named the dance hall and said that its manager was gay. In handing down the verdict, Beijing's Xuanwu District Court said homosexuality is "abnormal sexual behavior and is not acceptable to the public," and, as a result, Xu suffered "depression and psychological pain" as well as economic losses and damage to his reputation. Xu further claimed that his fiancee refused to marry him and he couldn't find a job after the book was published. Fang, 31, may appeal. "I feel the judgment is unfair," he told the South China Morning Post. "It is for doctors, not judges, to say if homosexuality is abnormal. The court says that it is considered abnormal, but by whom -- all 1.2 billion Chinese? The most authoritative definition is by the World Health Organization which has removed it from its list of illnesses." Fang and his publisher also were ordered to pay 1,800 yuan (ukp140) of the 2,390 yuan (ukp190) in legal expenses associated with the case -- and to publish an apology in the Justice Ministry's Legal Daily newspaper. APRES MOI LE DELUGE Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi has called homosexuality a "scourge". "It is not right that a man should go with another man or a woman with another woman. It is against African tradition and Biblical teachings." Speaking at a Nairobi agriculture show, the 75-year-old Moi added, "Now we are seeing men wearing earrings to make it easy for them to be identified by other men." His remarks followed Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni's announcement that he had ordered the arrest of all that nation's gays. He said they are guilty of "abominable acts." "I have told the CID [Criminal Investigations Department] to look for homosexuals, lock them up and charge them," Museveni said in remarks to a meeting on reproductive health, reported the daily newspaper New Vision. "Even the Holy Bible spells it out clearly that God created Adam and Eve as wife and husband, but not men to marry fellow men," he said. Uganda's penal code considers gay sex "carnal knowledge of another against the order of nature." The punishment is up to life in prison. ITALY An anti-discrimination bill introduced in parliament by Italy's minister for equal opportunities would, among other things, ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. The law would apply to political, economic and social life, and would include a ban on workplace bias. Violators could be punished with up to three years in prison and a fine of 2 million lira. CANADA The Vancouver, Canada, organization Lesbian Connections has been fined $2,030 by a British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal for banning a pre-op transsexual from its drop-in center. Susan Mamela was told not to come back in March 1997 following an argument over the nature of womanhood. Mamela considers herself a radical lesbian-feminist who is "female" but is not a "woman" because of the socio-political baggage attached to the idea of "woman." The tribunal said the organization injured Mamela's dignity, feelings and self-respect. JAPAN Tokyo District Court has upheld the banning of a book that outed Japan's most famous novelist, Yukio Mishima. The book, "Sword and Winter Red" by Jiro Fukushima, reprinted 15 of Mishima's love letters to Fukushima. It was banned in 1998 10 days after it went on sale when Mishima's son and daughter sued for copyright violation. About 90,000 copies had been sold. The District Court also ordered the author and publisher to pay Mishima's family five million yen in damages. Mishima committed suicide in 1970. NEW ZEALAND New Zealand's biggest gay event, the Hero Parade, will be postponed from February till November 2000 due to financial problems. Hero Trust Co-chair Sean Lofts told the New Zealand Herald: "A parade in February 2000 was unachievable. ... Moving the parade to November allows the organisation time to concentrate on a strategic plan that is fiscally responsible and enables time to reconnect with our communities." UKRAINE The Kiev, Ukraine, gay bar Kletka was raided at 3am on October 22nd by 15 policemen and four officers from the Anti-Organized Crime Squad. Patrons were forced to stand facing the wall for four hours and some were relieved of their cash, according to a report from the gay Our World Center in Lugansk. They were also threatened with compulsory psychiatric examination and some were telephoned the next morning at their places of employment. The police claimed the club had violated the nation's Law On Meetings and Actions by engaging in unspecified "unauthorized actions." FRANCE France's National Assembly has passed a partnership law that grants registered couples -- gay or straight, romantic or not -- many of the rights of matrimony. The vote was 315 to 249. If there are no complications, the "Civil Solidarity Pact" law will take effect at the beginning of the year. Justice Minister Elisabeth Guigou said the measure "offers a solution to five million people who live as couples without being married." The law will apply in areas such as income tax, inheritance, housing, immigration, health benefits, job transfers, synchronized vacation time, responsibility for debts, and social welfare. It does not grant equality in the areas of parental rights, adoption or medically assisted procreation. Unlike heterosexual couples who get married, registered partners will tie the knot before a court rather than at the town hall. They also will not be allowed to file a joint tax return until they've been together three years. Married people can do so immediately. Opponents plan to challenge the law's constitutionality before the Constitutional Council. The registration measure had passed the Assembly three times before but each time it was rejected by the Senate. This time, the bill will become law without Senate consideration Jean-Benoit Richard of the French Queer Resources Directory explained: "According to the French Constitution, to become a law, a project must be voted with the same words by both assemblies. Otherwise, our constitution says that if both assemblies cannot find an agreement, the National Assembly makes the final decision after several ... examinations by both assemblies." Now I watch Paul O'Grady waste Lily Savage with the 3rd rate guests of Blankety Blank, Dale Winton go through the motions as John Humphries on the ever changing format of the Lottery show, and to top it all, The Pet Shop Boys on Top of the Pops with a song and dance routine that would have made Boney M and the Village People run for cover toward Ocean Colour Scene. New York City Boy, the PSB's new single, is a tired homage to a gay life that no longer exists. Entering the charts in the teens, then going down to the thirties and then out of the charts all together, the tune deserved to be the flop that it was. A disgraceful blend of 80's high energy and lead singer Neil's nasal wines, it is a typical track from their new CD. Now only to be heard on the dance floor at Edinburgh's CC Blooms. Few bisexuals, lesbians or gays of any notoriety seems to have any thing to say (or sing) anymore. Queer celebs instead play up to stereotypes and forget the fans that made them famous in the first place, leaving the little guy like you and me to protest at all the injustice that persists in our society. It always ends up with me at 2 a.m. with my ninth cup of coffee finished staring at a Japanese hand ballet site or some Guyanan Coffee growers' collective home page. I just can't get the hang of searching the internet properly. Surfing can get you into sites you'd never heard of and would never have imagined even existed - surfing is intuitive, fun and a rollercoaster ride - providing you know how to stay on the original subject you started with, of course. As you surf, each website's owner has his own ideas of course of what exactly is a 'related' topic of interest. Here is where my problems usually begin - still it's all a bit of fun innit? Well it was until I decided to see what would happen if I went hunting out the nastier side of the web using only innocuous links on upfront easily accessed gay sites. I wanted to know how easy it would be to find my first bunch of Nazis. (kiddie porn is too predictable, too easy and illegal even to hunt down as it would involve downloading illegal images. Even in cookie format and unwittingly it would still be illegal). When I say find my first bunch of Nazis I mean just that -- the Sieg Heil, swastika loving kind, but with a twist, they've got to be gay. It took about four keystrokes and 10 minutes. Now some of you will think that the world is full of all sorts of nutters, many of whom live in small backwoods towns in places like Louisiana and Texas and some of whom are well into a strange mixture of KKK type politics and gay fantasy sex. You'd be right. Some of these strange folk also have access to their own computers, and get their own websites free from their ISP and the news is they then have the power to organise their ideas into high tech alluring sites which have interesting ways of getting unsuspecting surfers linking into them. They've also found a way to get unsuspecting surfers to fund them too. So free speech on the net says 'so what'? After all you don't have to read their stuff, and you certainly can't convert normal well adjusted gay folks to that filthy politics. True and true. Which is precisely why their sites don't appear at first to be anything to do with fascism or its gay 'white power' variants. Hidden behind intriguing teasers about entering 'forbidden worlds' and joining with other (invariably beautiful white blond) members to discuss 'wild sexual fantasies' these sites appear little different to many of the thousands of gay porn or sex chat sites so beloved of the midnight surfer. But they have a fantastic professionalism behind their site design and their step by step easing of the surfer deeper into the site. For isolated or naive gays these guys are apparently sussed, goodlooking and dead keen to have YOU, yes YOU as one of their friends, and it's all free too. I wondered what gives with the most well organised of these sites so with some hesitation set forth to stalk THEM for a change and see how far in it's possible to get and what their agenda really is with gay men. Note I say men. I have yet to find one such site that thinks any of our lesbian sisters would fall for their nonsense for a second. First, I created a false e-mail identity and address. I did not indicate that I lived in Scotland, even as a faker I wasn't prepared to sully Scotland's name by having it on their database somewhere. After that, using the most easily accessed chat program on the net (mIRC in other words) I was able in one keystroke to call up a dozen gay skinhead chatrooms. A second keystroke got me into a 'skinhead wp' chatroom (wp means white power for the uninitiated in the vernacular of race hatred), soon I had details of a skinhead white power web ring (a collection of websites all deliberately linked for the same subject matter). Keystroke four got me into one specific website belonging to a very classy looking outfit that presented a fun, friendly, non skinhead, all American boy type interface to the world. It made clear tho' how welcome skinheads were and that a special part of the membership was reserved for them alone. It also claimed to be a fun site , a bit on the wild side, but, hey, that was cool huh? It sexual imagery was stunning and I can't think of many gay men who would not have been interested. No mention of fascism, white power,Nazism, nuffink odd at all - yet Next keystroke and oh-oh, it's getting weird. Revolving swastikas and Gothic writing welcome you to this "purely fantasy" site for "admirers" of the "fetish" for uniforms and discpline, especially WWII German type. Also skinhead fanciers and skinheads themselves "would enjoy the friendship and welcome" offered in these pages. This was NOT it asserted reassuringly, a hate site! Now it's important to issue this disclaimer now. I recognise and completely accept that British gay skinheads are in no way part of the fascist or rascist straight skin culture as propagated by skin groups at certain London football grounds. I also entirely accept that GAY skin culture especially on skin chatsites tries very hard to ban and fight the white power minority who try to worm their way in. Further there are plenty of well adjusted pacifist and left wing gays who like uniforms of one sort or another (that's without getting into the debate all our fashion styles are uniforms of one type or another). Liking uniforms, or how men look in them is not a sign of latent racism or fascism. Nor is an interest in fetishism or SM. To each his own I say, that little fella below our belts has a mind of his own but he sure as hell doesn't have a vote! Anyway, back to the plot. A person interested or even just intrigued or warmed by the welcome might move on to the next enticing pages which promise a Valhalla of benefits by way of chat sites, pictures and friendship to those who just sign up as members and to do this you must of course join an adult check type verification agency. In other words pay a fee to prove you are over 18 and get to the juicy bits! The insidious thing about this is that whilst the vast majority of innocent surfers might click to some genuinely free site at this stage, some will already be members of the relevant age check agency and can simply enter their password to get to the next step, others might join, thus adding a percentage of that fee to the Nazi outfit's coffers - and remember they've still not declared how seriously they really mean you to take all this. Next step is to sign up entering not one but two e-mail addresses they can get you at. You can be one of three types of member, and here the intent to model on real Nazis becomes apparent (I will not disgust you with the specific detail). Next step is a message from one of the Seniors - this one a stunning (mid twenties) young muscled blond with an innocent and brilliant smile - he wants you to know how welcome you are, what opportunities for furthering "our common beliefs" exist and how much he enjoys the sexual opportunites that are available to members in good standing. A swastika appears. A cartoon figure pissing appears. A legend "Shooting White Power Across The Globe" jokily accompanies it. The young Leader's folksy welcome ends "Sieg Heil Motherfuckers". There are a number of services and activities this well organised and large outfit boasts. They have ,they claim, at least 2000 members, they clearly have many German, French and Belgian members. Sickeningly I saw on a bulletin board one of their most active and enthusiastic European members claimed to be a Scot, living in Edinburgh (they all have Gothic German fake names and titles so I cannot unmask him even if I thought that was ethical). So there we have it, four keystrokes, ten minutes to find a pure bred totally Aryan Nazi gay sex site with its own home grown Nazi local member too! Add to this the plenty of other skin wp sites and links to other hybrid nutter groups and it became chillingly obvious the the internet not only shrinks the Globe, but allows otherwise isolated little clumps of gay sex Nazis to (as they so wittily put it) "shoot white power over the Globe" too. Maybe we need to start asking ourselves some searching questions about why gay chat rooms and site hosts allow this type of lure to operate at all. Also the age verification companies which share their fees with the 'introducing' website bear a helluva responsibility for adding funds to the pockets of these gangs. Even for one as liberal minded as me, it makes me wonder if it isn't time for some regulation of this type of bankrolling by stealth. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FILM REVIEWS ============ "Romance" (18) is a curious title for the most controversial film ever passed by the British Board of Film Classification as "Erections" would be more appropriate. The theory is it has been passed as it is a French movie that won't be given a wide release. From 22nd October Edinburgh audiences have had the chance to witness all at the Filmhouse. Caroline Ducey is an attractive school teacher who is frustrated as her handsome live-in lover Sagemore Stevenin will only let her run a darting tongue over his erection, which you see on cameras but he won't give her the penetration a girl has been known to need. So, while he is asleep, she creeps out to an all night bar and Rocco Siffredi, star of many sex movies in the past, knows exactly what she needs. At his place, you see her place a condom on his erection and the experience puts her in a far better mood to face her students in the morning. Sensing her needs, her headmaster introduces her to a little bondage one evening which we see in exhausting detail. Director Catherine Breillat has certainly gone further on screen than any predecessor. Messrs. Stevenin and Siffredi are well worth your consideration. You could fancy either or both. "The Clandestine Marriage' (15) is a comedy of 1776 about the merging of two families in marriage. Timothy Spall has money to burn, but no class. Nigel Hawthorne has plenty of class and no money. Will their offspring unite the two? Wealthy aunt Joan Collins is there to give approval and the opulent country house setting is pleasing to study while they make a decision. Not being a TV soap lover (I stopped watching Eastenders when Dirty Den left the cast), I had no idea how stimulating Paul Nicholls can be to look at. Watching him here stripped to the waist, showing a perfect hairy cbest, gave the audience around me very great satisfaction. "The Sixth Sense" (15) was recently the top box office movie in America. An eight year old boy admits to child psychologist Bruce Willis that he is visited by ghosts he can see. It takes the better part of 114 minutes for Mr Willis to suggest he must be a medium and not let experience worry him. Lengthening this out clearly pleased American audiences. I envy any child who grows up hearing voices or seeing people from a spirit world that the rest of us are never able to hear or see. As Robin Williams has had several hit movies, I imagine he had no problems getting finance for "Jakob The Liar" (12) although it could be the most uncommercial film of the year. Set in Nazi occupied Poland in World War 2, we are shown the suffering in the Jewish ghetto which Robin tries to relieve by giving them hope. In a Nazi officer's office he hears on a radio a news bulletin that the Russian army is a few hundred miles away. When he leaks the news to friends they become convinced he has a hidden radio which were all confiscated and possession of one is punishable by death. So many people become revitalised with the news that he pretends he does have a radio. But he is informed on. You have to have a particular interest in Jewish wartime persecution to cope with this one. "The Children Of The Marshland" (PG) is the most delightful French film I have ever seen. Set in the countryside in the early thirties it follows the lives of poor, but never boring, people who live off the land and the river collecting frogs, snails and mushrooms to sell to local restaurants. Eric Cantona is a troublesome boxer thrown into gaol after breaking up a cafe. I was enchanted by all one hour 55 minutes of it. Set in 1910 "The Winslow Boy" (U) is based on the real life story of a young naval cadet who is accused of stealing a five shilling postal order. Convinced of his innocence his father, Nigel Hawthorne, persuades the country's leading lawyers Jeremy Northam, to take on the defence. Based on Terence Rattigan's celebrated play it is an inspiring story of a belief in right - whatever the cost. What could go on in outer space when astronauts are on their own? Writer and director Rand Ravich has some alarming theories that he has put Into "The Astronaut's Wife" (18). When Johnny Depp and co-pilot Nick Cassavetes lose consciousness for two minutes in space and return to earth with changes in their minds, their wives become suspicious about. Lovely new girl Charlize Theron becomes nervous of being pregnant when she realises disturbing changes have happened in the Depp personality. It is for those of us who want to believe there could be menacing forces at work out there in space. "A Walk On The Moon" (15) is a misleading title and too likely to give people the idea the movie is about that - which couldn't be more wrong. They have the temerity to call it that as it is set in 1969 when the Apollo Mission was on the way to the moon. It is, in fact, a romantic comedy with dramatic undertones. Jewish mother of two, Diane Ladd, is spending time in the Catskills Mountains on holiday while her husband suffers the New York summer at work. Marrying very young, her life as a faithful wife starts an unexpected change when Viggo Mortensen, a travelling salesman whose van is popular with holiday makers, begins paying her attention. Anyone who saw Mr Mortensen as Gwyneth Paltrow's lover in "A Perfect Murder" will know his sex appeal could change the lives of anyone lucky enough to place trembling hands on him. Her husband, the also very desireable Liev Schreiber, is informed, and he breaks speed records in driving there. Some people are spoiled for choice. "East Is East" (I5) is a very entertaining Asian comedy about a Pakistani chip shop owner trying to rule his family with a rod of iron. It is Salford in 1971 when young Asians are running from home to marry people of their choice and fathers refuse to speak to them ever again. Told with great humour it makes us realise growing up in our own particular worlds has many advantages. Looking ahead to January, a gay comedy "Rhythm And Blues" is worth bearing in mind. A very dysfunctional male escort agency "Boys Galore" sends out problem guys to clients who watch them with wide eyed disbelief as they overdose on drugs and drink. American director Stephen Lenhoff weaves this into 90 minutes of fun with the decorative Paul Blackthorne as a scheming escort and Angus MacInnes as Bad Daddy who eloquently deals with young men out of their minds. Current Releases A while ago newspaper publicity was given to the fact that British Screen, an office that grants lottery money to film producers, has been losing millions investing in films that are not even released, even though the producers assure them they have a guaranteed release. "Such A Long Journey" (15) concerns a Bombay family caught in a web of political intrigue on the eve of India's 1971 war with Pakistan. Made with very efficient Indian actors, I can only see it getting very limited release in Britain. In India, cinemagoers prefer action movies and spectaculars, and this film is neither. Producer Simon MacCorkindale had a promising career as an actor before he turned to directing and producing. The production notes tell me this film cost S4.5 million which surprised me. Financed by British Screen and the Canadian equivalent, Telefilm Canada, I do hope it doesn't go down as another tax loss. "'Deep Blue Sea" (15) shows Hollywood special effects at their very best. Saffron Burrows believes a cure for senility can be found by injecting the brains of whales with a serum that vastly increases their mental capacity, and then removes some cells later to treat the elderly. But the whales increase in strength alarmingly and mentally. Breaking out of their underwater cages is an awesome sight. Nice to see American producers realise a British leading lady has a voice that adds distinction to any project. As the whale handler new guy, Thomas Jane has enough sex appeal to raise your temperature more than a few notches. A very exciting movie. If you have always wanted to know more about the American Civil War you must consider "Ride With The Devil". The loss of life in 1863 horrifies me almost as much as the First World War. But director Ang Lee brings great sensitivity to it. Those of us with 20 year memories may remember "Gregory's Girl" that was an unexpected worldwide success. Writer director Bill Forsyth now shows us the grown up John Gordon Sinclair in "Gregory's 2 Girls" (15) playing an English teacher avoiding the persistent attentions of another lady teacher while he thinks about one of his overdeveloped students. American Kevin Anderson In a cameo role interested me most. "The Last Days" (PG) is a very touching documentary about Jewish people who survived the concentration camps returning from America to Hungary with their grown up children to explain their past. I hope this is shown on TV soon to a wider audience as it is hardly the kind of subject to attract many people to cinemas. "Boys On The Beach" (TBC) has French teenagers who have won a Paris film making competition, taking up their prize -- a holiday in Biarritz. You have to fancy one of the four to make this bearable. Books, magazines, videos, lube and especially dildos were more geared for men than women. There was some stuff for women -- soft porn books, videos and hideous dildos that just were not ideal, but these days things have changed and I took a trip up to Atomix in Edinburgh's Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Centre to find out more. I spoke to Scott, the owner of Atomix, (he's so sweet we can just about forgive him for being a man) about the newly-opened women's section which is already extensive and expanding as we speak. He too feels that women's attitudes are changing. "I feel", says Scott, "that it is about trying to create an atmosphere where women feel happy about coming in" And it seems that women do feel happy about going into Atomix. They feel free to wander about and are quite upfront about what they want. There is no embarrassment as Scott makes you feel at ease. I had a wander around and the dildos in the range are surprisingly varied. Take (if you can) Titan -- great name for this huge camoflage dildo. It is supposed to be the equivalent of being fisted, but if the thought of that brings tears to your eyes there is the Rabbit Pearl a smaller pink one with what looks like beads inside and a lovely little extra for fun. There is also a vast range of harness compatibles and Babes -- smoother, less blatently phallic dildoes in funky colours. And if all you want to do is read about it, or watch, there are plenty of books and videos. You can even get The Official PMT Calendar 2000! So, whatever your preference, it seems that the manufacturers have realised that the Pink Pound is not wholly exclusive to men.
