Both show remarkably poor judgement. The first relates to a police drive against cottagers in Edinburgh. What was once a zone of toleration had that toleration withdrawn with little warning. Assuming that the Procurator Fiscal does bring the cases to Court, the men involved can be assured of public humiliation and worse with their lives being disturbed in a manner totally disproportionate to their "crimes". As a result, years of work by the police in attempting to gain the trust of the lgbt community have been put in jeopardy. No doubt things can all be patched up on a superficial level, but any trust that has been lost will be long in re-establishing itself. And the whole affair will allow those who maintain that pigs cannot change their spots to shake their heads and say, "Told you so". If cottaging really was such a problem at this locus, there were several ways to tackle it which would have evaded all the undesirable consequences. Firstly, the Council could have put in an attendant. If they really couldn't afford that, then police action could have been escalated with posters warning of imminent police action, moving on to informal warnings and only using arrests and prosecution as a last resort - this approach has worked well in a number of other cities. I can well understand that it was felt that some action should be taken - activities at Cathedral Lane had got a bit out of hand and the unprofessional activities of some supposed sexual professionals left a lot to be desired - not to mention all the willy waving in the body o' the kirk. Nevertheless, police misjudged this one completely. As have the management of the LGB Centre in Glasgow when it comes to self censorship. Removal by the management of an innocuous poster offering employment to young men wishing to pose in mucky photographs is risible. But it's also dangerous. Public funding of lgbt organisations is important: it's also our right. We all pay taxes and are entitled to receive some of these back to fund our centres and helplines (not to mention public lavatories). However, we should never lose our self respect by tailoring these facilities to pacify the prejudices of those who would probably rather we did not exist at all. The campaign against Section 2A surely taught us that! John Hein ---------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS ==== No sex please, we're funded Glasgow LGB Centre has banned an advert from its noticeboards because the Management Committee fear it might lose them public funding. Stuart Burgess complained to the Committee after he noticed that his advertisement for photographic models had been removed. Eric Kay, the Committee Chair, told the bemused pornographer: "The format you have used (whilst it is similar to that in many adverts in the gay press) is not suitable for display in a council funded Community Centre notice board." "As you will have seen in the past year (with the Section 28 debate) the Centre and other publicly funded bodies have been under a great deal of scrutiny from the press and media about what materials we are responsible for. Because of this we have to select which adverts and articles appear in our own newsletter, on our website and on our notice boards." Stuart Burgess had complained at the Centre's "double standards". As well as images in gay publications available in the Centre he pointed out, "On the wall of the reception area there is a picture montage which shows a nude female with visible pubic hair." But the Management Committee was unrepentant, "You are absolutely right that Clone Zone, Boyz magazine and many other publications carry material which is far more graphic than your poster but none of these receive public funding. You may not know that both Clone Zone and GLC Cafe are both independent tenants of the Centre." "You referred to the picture in the foyer. It is not nudity that makes your advert unacceptable for display (indeed the line drawing does not show a naked body) but the fact that it is certainly sexually suggestive and on that basis could prejudice our funding." The Centre had earlier covered up the penis on a full length painting which was displayed as part of an art exhibition. COTTAGE INDUSTRY On Saturday 27th of January, the city centre police unit of Lothian and Borders Police carried out an operation which resulted in the arrest of nine men for alleged sexual offences in Cathedral Lane toilet. When initially informed of this, I was angry that all the good work by Gayfield Square Sub Division had been potentially jeopardised by this operation. After all, we have managed to put an end to the systematic harassment of cruising men by the police and put in place measures which increase access to the police and improve the safety of LGBT people. The new police unit was receiving complaints for months about the behaviour of men in this well-known cottage. I advised them back then that the problem was not a high policing priority but a problem for the council to solve by way of notices, attendants etc. Unfortunately the solution to the problem fell on deaf ears in the council and the police operation was the result of many complaints. As Chair of the LGBT Community Safety Forum I asked people at the grassroots why were only nine men had been arrested when, according to one source, hundreds of men cruise there on a Saturday? The reply I got from more than one "expert" was that these men were obviously not discreet in their behaviour, witnesses stated that the men were not cuffed and publicly humiliated and they had ignored new warning notices put up just prior to the operation. The police themselves feel the Procurator Fiscal will throw the cases out and I received an assurance that the employers and families of the men would not be informed of the charges. If this has happened I believe it is due to an individual's circumstances like their previous history. I was on a steep learning curve. How do you keep a partnership which is of benefit to the wider LGBT people of Edinburgh together under these circumstances. I thought the issues through and came to the conclusion that you can't defend the indefensible. This cottage, next to one of the city's largest shopping centres, is a very public place and the activities of a handful of "gay" men make the place oppressive for many others. I would not allow the alleged behaviour of nine men and the inaction of the Council to stop the process of partnership working. In fact it is vitally important that we continue to communicate with the Police and Council at this time. It may seem odd that I appear to be defending the partnership (and therefore the police action). You may have experienced bad policing outwith Edinburgh but, in an Edinburgh context, this operation was not systematic homophobic policing, otherwise hundreds of men could have been arrested. It was a targeted operation on a one off basis. It worked. There are now temporary attendants in place, (too little too late from the City of Edinburgh Council if you want my opinion) Of course the focus for cottagers has now been displaced to another city centre council run toilet. When is the City of Edinburgh Council going to take responsibility for the crime, including drug taking on their premises and when are we, the LGBT communities going to accept responsibilities? Andrew O'Donnell BILL BRACKENRIDGE 1952-2000 It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Bill, as a result of a road traffic accident on the A9 on the 4th November. One of Bill's first ventures into openly gay life was in December 1984 when he attended the Gay Outdoor Club Highland Hogmanay event. Over the years that followed, Bill was instrumental in the development of the GOC's activities in Central Scotland and acted as local contact for the Stirling area for many years. He organised and led dozens of walks during his time in the GOC. He was also involved in the setting up and running of the Forth Friend helpline in Stirling. Through his involvement in GOC, the Gay Birders and Bears Club, Bill developed many good friends the length and breadth of Britain and in many countries overseas. Originally from Ayrshire, Bill lived in the tiny village community of Ashfield, near Dunblane, which many GOC members will remember as a welcome stop for post-walk refreshments, on a number of occasions. Bill was passionate about bird life and in caring for the environment and travelled extensively in pursuit of his interests. He had expert knowledge on many forms of animal and plant species and enjoyed showing slides from his considerable collection, both to his friends and to the community at large. He worked for a number of years as a countryside ranger for Central Regional Council before pursuing self-employment as an environmental consultant, working latterly in this capacity for North Lanarkshire Council. He also campaigned enthusiastically against the destruction of the rainforest and other threatened environments, and championed the cause of environmental education projects in Third World countries as well as the work of the Scottish Wildlife Trust, the WWF for Nature and various other organisations. Many of Bill's friends will also fondly remember his dog Moser, his most faithful companion for 15 years until she too sadly died in 1999. Bill had a special kind of quiet determination to the causes he believed in and an unwavering loyalty to his friends. He was indeed a gentle, caring man. Bill's absence will be felt for many years to come amongst those who have enjoyed his (and Moser's) company over the years. It is proposed to hold a hill-walk in Bill's memory on June 10th. The venue for this will be Ben Ledi, which was one of his favourite hills. Our thoughts meantime go out to his partner in Holland, with whom Bill enjoyed a long distance relationship for all too short a time. Douglas Bingham GAY PRIDE CRUISING A new travel business has recently opened in the Scottish Borders specialising in cruise holidays for gay people. 'The Cruise Centre' recognises that many gay people prefer to holiday in the company of other gay groups and will focus on arranging itineraries to meet these requirements. Owner Derek Mackenzie-Hook told ScotsGay, "Everyone has visions of that dream cruise aboard a luxury liner to exotic places in the world we only see in brochures or on television. It doesn't need to be just a dream anymore because gone are the days when cruising was only available to the nouveau riche and formal dinner dress was compulsory, cruising is now available to everyone, regardless of age or income." "Individual gays as well as gay and lesbian groups can be booked on all major cruise lines, many of whom make gays very welcome. 'The Cruise Centre' has many fabulous offers to many exotic destinations with a variety of dream itineraries at affordable prices. (Up to 50% off) Pre-arranged dining and shore excursions in the company of fellow gay travellers can be arranged, as can a cruise and stay additional nights in exotic resorts to explore the local gay scene." "Gay only cruises are available but space can be very limited, there are many more options with mixed cruises. We are currently working on itineraries that will combine cruises with a visit to one of the many Gay Pride Festivals, such as Copenhagen in August, Los Angeles in June, August and October, Las Vegas in May, San Francisco, New York, Puerto Rico in June, or Vancouver in July. We can arrange an itinerary to suit your budget and special discounts can be offered for group bookings, which is an excellent way to travel. Groups can be seated together during the cruise and accommodated in gay owned or friendly hotels whilst on land." "The Cruise Centre can arrange flights, accommodation and cruise only options anywhere in the world at very competitive prices. So if you're looking for just a flight, or a cruise with an extended stay in an exotic location, we can arrange a tailor made package to meet your needs. In the same way that 1940s House is innovative in its approach to history, Love in the 21st Century will take a new look at how we are choosing to live and love in the 21st Century. We are interested in making the invisible visible; the norms rather than the extremes. Where is Britain at sexually? Do men have a different attitude to the fluidity of sexuality than women? Is there a difference between men and women's attitudes to infidelity? Do men have a higher sex drive than women? Do men find it easier to have casual sex than women? Is sex in a long-term relationship difficult or challenging? How do we decide whom to have sex with? Does being in a lesbian or gay relationship make telling your children the facts of life difficult? Do girls find it easier to come out than boys? For the television series the BBC is searching for gay and lesbian individuals, couples and families who can talk about the worries around coming out; enjoying the years of sexual freedom before settling down; the difficulty of maintaining a sex life with the kids walking in; or about how to keep the romance and passion alive in a long-term relationship. If you would like to take part in this unique and challenging television experience then please call Emma or Cate for further information. A rival to the Scottish Tartans Society is to be set up by Keith Lumsden who, last year, gave approval to the tartan designed by Ronnie Hek. This follows complaints by Society president Duncan Paisley who claims that it was approved without the knowledge that it was a gay tartan. ScotsGay readers will remember that the business partners behind the tartan fell out last year. DADS As we went to press, Gay Dads Scotland, the social and support group for gay dads and/or their partners, was due to hold its first meeting in Glasgow as an experiment to see if there is a need for a group in the West. Granny Spice is on the mend recovering from major surgery, whilst it will be interesting to see what excuses our ScotsDyke, Bisexual, Dundee, Moray and Inverness contributors come up with! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- LETTERS ======= Flying time Dear Editor, Now that the replacement for John Orr, Chief Constable, Strathclyde Police, has been announced, do not expect any change in attitude towards the policing of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. I know this particular force has recently made a feeble attempt to offer the olive branch, but expect a return to the bad old days with this new appointment. The man, Willie Rae, is an ex assistant Chief Constable of the same force and obviously failed to make any effort to forge links with our community when he was in that position. Can anyone remember Rae for trying to respect and acknowledge our community when he was an assistant? Rae was in that position when the force pursued a homophobic campaign against men meeting in public toilets in the Helensburgh/Loch Lomond areas (not to mention Queens, Kelvingrove, and Strathclyde Parks). At least one suspect committed suicide as a result of that operation. Strathclyde Police stated that the operation was in response to complaints from members of the public, which is quite strange, since no member of the public was ever cited as a witness in any case as a result of the campaign. So folks! Be warned! I suspect similar action will be taken against our community, or in fact stepped up, when this man takes over later this year. Yours sincerely Tony Stamp As ithers see us To: gus@drink.demon.co.uk From: "dave macdonald" HELLO GUS, WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE CITY BAR WASN'T REALY A FAGGOT BAR!I WAS A MEMBER OF THE CITY BAR REDS SUPPORTERS CLUB AND WE WERE TOLD THAT THEY'D RATHER HAVE ALL YOU SUBHUMANS IN THERE THE US NORMAL PEOPLE.SO WE HAD TO MOVE ELSEWHERE.WASN'T TOO BOTHERED AS THE LAST THING I WANTED TO SEE WAS SOME FAGGOT DRESSED UP LIKE A WOMAN.DR MENGELE WOULD'VE FOUND SOME NICE TREATMENT TO USE ON YOU FUCKING ANIMALS.NEVER MIND THE VISUS MUST BE DUE TO WIPE OUT A GOOD FEW MORE OF YOU FAGGOTS.PITY YOU'RE TAKING SOME NORMAL PEOPLE ALONG WITH YOU.HOPE YOU DIE SOON GAYBOY DAVE 88 Which witch? Sir, In ScotsGay 37a, Garry Otton comments on the dismissive treatment received by a young woman who asked "Old Mother" Burnie for advice regarding a crush on another woman. He himself dismissed this with the words "That's what happens to naughty children who write to witches". Rather like the word "gay", meanings can change over time and I therefore think it most inappropriate to compare the prudish old bat with a follower of a contemporary, sex-positive nature religion! Yours Sincerely, Feorag NicBhride --------------------------------------------------------------------- EDINBURGH/DUN EIDEANN ===================== Welcome back to the Edinburgh Scene guide... How are we all?? Are you sitting comfortably? Then, I'll begin.. The Stag and Turret are having lots of events over the next few months. What with the Karaoke, artistes appearing and all the usual tomfoolery, it's getting better every day! Check the ad out in the mag! Planet Out are planning a few surprises I gather, so you'd better watch the bar posters for more details. Unfortunately, they've surprised the Diverse Drinkers by taking the Real Ale out! The Newtown Bar is still serving "real beer" and it's rather scrummy. (Possible GBG standard, I've heard. Ed) . Not been in for a while so I will have to pop in and see the girls and boys!!! The Claremont Bar Krazy Quiz is as busy as ever and still on every Wednesday. Liam is the host with the most and Robin, Graeme and the staff help keep you entertained all night long. For more info check out their website at http://www.scifipub99.freeserve.co.uk/. Hot Stuff is still having Titty Galore on Wednesdays and JP's quiz. Go along and say hello to Rory, JP, & Martin. Cafe Habana still (woohoo!!) has the drinks promos on and is still getting busier everytime I go past it! Gordon says that he's planning more refurbishment and he's got a new fancy light ordered for the front door. CC Blooms are having Kirsty back on the 28th February. Kirsty is an excellent Vocalist with a Piano and Guitar to match. Very entertaining - a must see. Also DJ's Christine & Blondie want to say that the Tuesday nights are still very 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's dance. No Steps, No Vengaboys, music the way my parents remember it!! The BeeGees, Nolans and Aretha Franklin all appear in one night - what more do you want? Tackno is going strong at Club Mercado on the last Sunday of the month whilst Joy and Mingin are still having fun. Joy at Ego seems to be going down well and Mingin is as messy as ever at the Calton Studios. Something to look forward to at Easter is when Joy, Taste and Luvely get together at Teviot House for "The Biggest Easter Party in Edinburgh" - tickets at the clubs and from Out Of The Blue. Remember Club Lush at Whynot? Well it's moved down the road to Ego. It starts on the 4th March and runs every fortnight thereafter. GBP3 entry all night with drink promos running as well. Craig and Dale hope to keep the night running with all the success they had at Whynot? Help them out and make an appearance, and for more info check out http://www.clublush.co.uk/ If anyone happens to know the whereabouts of Grant Mackintosh (ex-Queer Sunday) please let me know at the E-mail address below. If you have any gossip let me know through the usual channels and I'll be back with you lot later on. Ciao for now!!! Lots of love Ali niniev@yahoo.com http://www.niniev.net/ninie ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GLASGOW/GLASCHU =============== Arsebandit with attitude Hiya scumbagz! Well, it looks as if I'm going to be having a fairly quiet time for the next couple of weeks - the new Goldilocks boyfriend has had to go down south on a trip and left me all on my own. I've already had all the piss-taking about having to behave myself. Those of you who've had the pleasure (and that's most of Glasgow) know that it's hard enough for Goldilocks to go 12 hours without a shag, never mind 3 weeks! I can see me getting a bit frustrated in the near future! All you club bunnies will be glad to hear that there are two new club nights starting up shortly. I wrote in my last column that the promoters of Taste and Fruitfly had arranged for two preview club nights for their new venture called "Aurall" in Mas Nightclub in Exchange Square. This will now become a regular clubnight starting on Sunday 4th of March, and unlike some of the others, this will be a weekly event. The launch night will be a fancy dress night with a pop star theme, so all you sad twats can start digging out the wigs and frocks now. As usual, there's a host of big name DJs that you'll all have heard of, and if not, just pretend you have so as not to let your other little club bunny friends think that you're not one of da crowd man. Music policy is garage and house to "up-for-it pumping house" whatever the fuck that means, and "Aurall aims to bring together a contemporary blend of the outrageous, the bold and the beautiful to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where the focus is on the harmonious bump and grind to quality beats." Oo er missus - pretentious club hype alert! Anyway, you'll know many of the DJs from the very successful Fruitfly club night, so if you're into this sort of stuff then get yourselves down to Mas, Exchange Square on Sunday nights from 11pm onwards. Tickets are GBP7 for the peasants and GBP5 for those of you who are members of Taste or Fruitfly. The other club night to watch out for is Fusion, which will be held on Saturday nights once a month. This one promises to "blow you out of the water" with a "Fusion of music body and soul" on "a journey that will take you into the realms of house music never reached before". Well what can I say to that? And can I keep a straight face? I think I'll just stick to trying to find the subliminal satanic messages on my Heavy Metal CDs. Anyway, the venue is the Renfrew Ferry, there's a host of big name DJs that you'll all have heard of etc, blah, blah, blah, playing house music and tickets are GBP5 from the Candle Bar. Further information can be obtained from the information line 07890 237642. Two questions for all these "club promoters" - Why do they all use mobile numbers for their "information lines" - can't they afford a secretary, or at least an answering machine? And if we have Garage and House music - what's next? Garden music? Patio music? Interesting point about Fusion - they don't actually limit the numbers I can get on the guest list, and I was invited to bring all my friends a long. It would be interesting to see just how many of you I could manage to blag into the Renfrew Ferry. Anyway, there you have it. If you're into clubnights, both of these sound like they might be worth a visit, so watch out for the posters and flyers. I just wish I got as many free invites to Heavy Metal nights as I get to all this poofy shite that you lot listen to. Nice to see that the Waterloo is as busy as ever! I was in recently on a Monday afternoon hoping to be able to sit down in peace and read the papers. No chance! Had to stand the whole time I was in - something places such as Dels could only ever dream about on a quiet February afternoon! Wouldn't have something to do with the fact that the Waterloo is a professionally run establishment which looks after its customers rather than a chicken-shit outfit staffed by useless amateurs, would it? It was also nice to see that the Waterloo had run out of copies of ScotsGay again. We keep increasing the print run, and still you can't get enough of us! On my last visit with the new Goldilocks boyfriend, we were joking that the two of us had more hair than everybody else in the Waterloo put together. And yes, Alison - I really am a poof, seeing as how you were asking if I was a bit bisexual! The big talking point at the moment is the opening of Glasgow's newest gay bar in John Street. Owners Brendan Nash and Jon Jardine hope to be opening the doors of Revolver Bar before the end of the month, so watch out for the flyers when the final date is announced. On my recent visit to the premises the place was still looking like a building site, but the construction work is well under way and all the relevant paperwork regarding Building Control, Licensing Board etc has been finalised, so no delays are anticipated. Jon and Brendan are aiming for a slightly older clientäle, no doubt having realised that the young pretty brain dead crowd are ever-so-trendy, but generally have crap jobs (if any) and no money. They're intending to have no Karaoke, crap drag acts or any of the other shit that pooves are supposed to like, and music will be kept down to a level where people can actually talk. I'm as deaf as a a fucking post, but even I find some of the music in our pubs uncomfortably loud! There will be a selection of beers on tap, including stuff to appeal to the real ale drinkers, and all prices will be kept to a reasonable level, especially soft drinks which are usually seen as a good excuse to screw the punters for a quid or two! The venue will have a good mix of seated area, stools at the bar and will also have a pool table at the back. I hope that Brendan and Jon make a success of their bar as Glasgow really could do with a few small independents who know and understand the LGBT community. I've had quite a few of you passing comment about the way that Brendan managed the Polo Lounge and the "image and attitude" bullshit that was in force there, but hopefully all that nonsense came "from above" and we won't get any of that crap in his new place. The really good news is that the jukebox will be totally devoid of Steps, Westlife, Kylie, Madonna and all the other poofy crap that all you queens love. I've been asked to mention Diverse Artists @ The GLC - the group for LGBT actors, poets, sculptors and painters. They're on the lookout for new members, and those of you with an artistic bent are cordially invited to join the group by picking up an application form from the Centre, or giving Arts Co-ordinator Stuart a call on 0141-221 7203. As the group now have a membership system, they have decided to design their own logo and members are asked to submit any designs they may have. There will also be an exhibition in May with the topic of "reflection" open to all local photographers, and the Centre are hoping to display as many entries as possible. Other forthcoming events include the Poets and Writers Group publishing works for the Glasgay Festival, and Diverse Artists are also hoping to commission a mural for Glasgay. And finally, if anyone ever doubted Mr Hammond's artyness, you should see his e-mails! He just can't be happy with black and white like everyone else! Right then - it's been a good month for complaints, with a fairly large number of e-mails heading my way from disgruntled fairies. All the usual moans about crap service in Glasgow's notorious shit-hole - Delmonicas, but also a considerable number concerning Benetts. It would seem that a lot of you are unhapppy about being told to stop snogging your boy/girlfriends as it's upsetting some of the numerous straights who are taking over our pubs and clubs. Let's be quite clear about this - Glasgow has two part time gay friendly clubs who want the best of both worlds. They want the gay crowd because they will pay over the odds for shit service and will never complain, but have to ensure that the breeders don't get upset when faced with the sight of a same sex couple having a snog in allegedly gay friendly Benetts. I've also had a few complaints about gay guys who have been turned away from Benetts on their Tuesday straight night. It would seem that it's OK to knock back the gay scene on Tuesday so as not to upset the straights, and then to tell the fairies to stop snogging on the allegedly gay nights as the straights don't like our behaviour! Thankfully, I'm barred from all the crap venues who fuck you lot over for a fast buck, so I don't have to put up with this nonsense. It would be nice to think that you lot would have the balls to stick two fingers up to Gibson and King and tell them to stuff their shitty clubs up their arses, but sadly we know that the Glasgow gay community are a bunch of spineless losers who deserve the appalling treatment they receive. Stop snivelling and just do what the fuck you're told! I'd better remind you all of the joint Ceilidh being held soon by Strathclyde Lesbian and Gay Switchboard, and Glasgow LGBT Centre. Definitely a "must do" for your diary, the annual Ceilidh will be held on Fri 30th March from 8pm-12midnight in the Trades Hall, 80 Glassford Street, Glasgow. Tickets (GBP10/GBP7) are available from CloneZone (within GLC, Dixon Street) or the Tron Theatre Box Office. Music will be from Macapella who will also be showing all those of you who don't know the dances what to do. The ticket price includes a light buffet and also gets you free entry to Benetts afterwards. Proceeds go towards Switchboard and GLGBT Centre funds, so it's all in a good cause, and gives you an excuse to dress up for the night. Yet more changes down at Centurion Health Club. As you know, I'm partial to the occasional sauna or two, or three, a week, or day, so it's nice to see that Gordon and Alex are doing more improvements. The "post sauna rest room" has been completely revamped with all the draughty windows sealed up and the area being relaunched as a construction zone with flashing lights etc. New seating has been installed, along with a new floor, and the individual cabins are next on the list for refurbishment. The plans are to have these done in three themes - there will be the "Emergency Services" room with blue flashing lights, the "Military" room complete with camouflage netting (Townhouse Sauna customers will know how popular THAT is!) and finally the "sportswear" room. Gordon and Alex also tell me that they are looking to possibly do a themed all-nighter on Friday catering for some of the special interest groups in the city. Give them a call if you would like to be included. The scene really seems to be taking a shine to The Candle Bar these days, and I see that Jeanette has now been renamed Natalie Barnes, due to her resemblance to some character in Coronation Street. The Candle Bar really have got things right with the entertainment, and things seem to be paying off with more of you heading down for reasonable prices, decent music and none of the "attitude" bullshit other places hype themselves up with. You can actually have a good night out at a reasonable price, and it's nice to see people really enjoying themselves rather than worrying if they're going to get turfed out for snogging etc! Good to see the bar staff enjoying themselves too, with Jean-Paul, Stuart and Co. up dancing on the bar counter to keep the customers amused. Sunday afternoons also seem to be getting increasingly popular and I was in last weekend when Chris Millar got up to do an impromptu song or two - went down well that did! SNIPPETS and stuff >>> There should be an interesting discussion coming up at a forthcoming meeting of the "Out on Sunday" group called "Poofs Perverts and The Pulpit" on Sunday 25th Feb at 7.30pm in the Jackie Forster room in the Glasgow LGBT Centre given by theology student Derek Coyle. Entry is open to all, and it should be a lively night! >>> Yet more complaints about the younger crowd being harassed by slobbering old pervs in the GLGBTC. A lot of the under 18s who used to frequent the centre have stopped going due to the unwanted attentions of these sad bastards. Come on guys - the GLGBTC is the only place that the youngsters can get in to, and it's not fair on them to pester them in the pathetic belief that they might be interested in shagging a fat slobbering dribbler. If any young guys are having problems, don't stop going to the Centre because of it - ask to speak to the duty manager tell them what's happening. The Centre is committed to creating a space where you can meet without being hassled, and they have the authority to bar anyone who is causing you problems. Unfortunately, they can only act when an official complaint is made, so don't suffer in silence! >>> I've also been asked to give a mention to OKO restaurant in Ingram Street which specialises in sushi. My first reaction was yuk! - dead fish and not even cooked! That's not actually the case and they have a fairly extensive menu for us veggies. The whole place is quite theatrical and fascinating to watch, as all the dishes are chosen from a conveyor belt which goes around the open kitchen. Check it out and tell them Goldilocks sent you. >>> The Lane Sauna seem to have dropped their demands that we remove their listing stating that they were not as busy as before. Could this be that they finally realise that we don't give in to threats, especially as we now know that the venue has NOT changed hands, and Bodger Bob is still the owner? Well, I think that's about it for this month, so I'm gonna bugger off to bed (on my own - hmphhh!) No smutty e-mails please - I'm frustrated enough as it is! Invites to parties, club launches and anything involving free food and booze to the e-mail address below, and you can get the full unedited version of Glasgow's most loved and hated gossip column on the Glasgow Gay and Lesbian Webshite. See you next month. Luv, Goldilocks E-mail:- goldilocks@gay-glasgow.co.uk Webshite:- http://www.gay-glasgow.co.uk/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- ABERDEEN/OBAR DHEADHAINN ======================== At the time of writing, it is Sunday afternoon. Hollyoaks has finished, Shipwrecked is just about to come to an end, and my weekly dose of doom, gloom and depression is imminent with EastEnders looming on the horizon! Just the perfect time to sit and write this month's drivel. I feel Imust offer my apologies for the lack of Aberdeen coverage last month. Quite a lot of you seem to have missed my ramblings - aww, sweet! Well, as is the case when any new venue opens up in Aberdeen, circulating about one venue or the other. (Lady) Colin of Madison was telling me not so long ago that someone had tried to put about the rumour that he'd closed the place early one Saturday night. Well, it's funny that, because I was there that night, and as far as I can remember, the club closed its doors at the usual time. Just one prime example of the amount of crap that we hear. Colin's reaction was that even if he had just one customer in, he would remain open until 2. Another is the one about Madison's closing. Colin vehemently denied that one too, although with the decline in the attendance at Maddie's, one could probably be forgiven for believing it. It would seem that Madison's is attracting a slightly more mature crowd these days, although you do get the occasional group of young people. Indeed, I returned from the bar on one occasion to find myself surrounded by a group of nice young men. Ah, it's nice to see that I can still make people envious once in a while! Anyway, I digress. Gawd, perhaps I am getting old and set in my ways after all! When I start hating no.1 crops and combats I'll know that I'm getting far too much like oor Goldilocks. Perish the thought... Madison's is open 7 days, with no entry fees at all, and cheap drink prices too. Most pints and bottles are GBP1.50, and spirits are similarly priced. In contrast to the barren spaces in Maddie's, Castro is still the busier weekend venue, and seems to pull in sizeable numbers during the week too. The opening hours have been extended, with Castro's now being a 7-day-a-week affair. I had a chat with some of the powers that be some time ago, and apparently they're going to be refurbishing the place fairly soon. I don't really see why, as it's not too bad at the moment. It's bright and cheerful, which is something that we don't really see too often in gay venues. Entry to Castro's is free before midnight, and the door charges thereafter are 2, 3 and 4 notes Thursday to Saturday and 2 quid on a Sunday. Well, I don't really have much more info for this month. As usual, nothing much exciting seems to be happening. As usual, send any juicy gossip, comments or criticisms to me c/o ScotsGay. In the meantime, take care all! Gus gus@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTTISH MEDIA MONITOR ====================== Garry Otton On Mail Paranoia and the Demise of the Liberal Scotsman What a thoroughly loathsome and scurrilous newspaper the Scottish Daily Mail is. Reporter Eddie Barnes found "the Scottish Executive was attacked last night for caving in to European legislation and ushering through more liberal laws governing homosexual practices". Now, along with 'straights', gays could enjoy group sex too. The Mail screamed: "Ministers bow to Europe to legalise gay group sex". That was despite the efforts of unelected Christian militants who had hijacked the political processes to block gays from receiving equal treatment under British law. The Mail's flunky's, those same shrill voices we hear over and over again, demanded Britain stand up to Europe. "...They should fight it in the courts and protect our youngsters", squealed Gordon McDonald of extreme Christian group, Christian Action Research Education (CARE). From the very same paper that printed anatomical drawings on how to distinguish a homosexual from a heterosexual during their campaign to retain Section 28, the Mail insulted the intelligence of its readers once again by mimicking the political posturing of thirties Nazi propaganda by linking gay equality to even greater evils: "If it is passed by the Scottish parliament, whole swathes of Scottish legislation will be changed to comply with EU Convention rights... It could mean an early release for several long-serving murderers..." The conviction of "yet another" homosexual child abuser, David Murphy had the Mail reminding readers of all the most recent cases of men abusing boys. Heterosexual cases of abuse were brushed aside despite only two days before; a 38-year-old man from Beith was jailed for raping and abusing two little sisters. "Nobody wants to create a witch hunt..." They implored, "but... The Scottish Executive... has a need to raise its game. Recent scandals make its preoccupation with legalising the promotion of homosexuality in schools and lowering the age of homosexual consent particularly inappropriate..." Using children to expound the religionists' evil and malicious propaganda begged the question; just exactly what kind of society and moral values existed when the crimes of these homosexual priests, teachers and social workers took place? Exactly the sort of society the Mail's new Scottish editor Ian MacGregor wants to promote today it appears. Getting the Scottish Mail to explain itself is hopeless. They refuse to answer my e-mails and when I try to speak to someone to answer some fairly simple questions- as I did last week when I got hold of the deputy editor- he said he heard noises and accused me of recording him. I hope the 'voices' go away; perhaps then the Scottish Mail might begin to behave more rationally. Although, we should thank the Scottish Daily Mail for apparently recognising how people are less vulnerable to attack from gays. They want to see an end to the "scandalous practice" of mixed wards. An 83-year-old female patient died after a drunken 40-year-old man sexually assaulted her at a hospital in Kirkcaldy. Now, would you buy a newspaper that only showed one side of an argument? No? Good! So The Scotsman should no longer have any gay readers then. The Scotsman's other best reason not to buy it, Linda Watson-Brown, was still poking the coals of her full-time 'anti-porn' crusade. "Personally, I find that I can write about child abuse, pornography and exploitation until the cows come home..." (Don't we all know it)! Not satisfied with attacking car showroom salesmen and newsagent managers, she blasted: "Surely all journeys with children on board should provide entertainment appropriate for the youngest passenger? No matter if a plane has only one three-year-old who sleeps for ten hours, it is no excuse for any film above a U certificate". The fanatic "feminist" was at it again in another issue. "I have no truck with the BBFC's (British Board of Film Censorship) naive and disingenuous view that pornography always shows consensual sex. I also refuse to believe that an 18-certificate sticker ensures that children are never exposed to the degradation which goes by the name of adult entertainment". If that hasn't convinced you how much The Scotsman has changed, they have promoted the editor of the pro-Section 28 Scotland on Sunday, John McGurk and let me tell you the name of its new Glasgow editor: Ramsay Smith. Ring any bells? Yes, he was the former editor of the Scottish Daily Mail, responsible for the vilest homophobia during the Section 28 war, second only to the Martin Clarke of the Daily Record who also now writes in The Scotsman. We changed the Record: We can kill The Scotsman! Spread the word! Remember when it was only the gay boys that asked to do cookery at school? It made life hard for the 'straight' boys who crushed their culinary leanings to lead a life of regret, producing rickety chairs and unstable bookshelves. My heart bleeds. Rikki Brown in the Scottish Sun, otherwise a little too meat-and-two-veg for my liking, was quite taken aback to learn more boys than ever were rolling the dough. "Pants, it's not cool", Rikki snapped. "...Shouldn't they be kicking a ball about a street? Or locked in the bathroom with a nude book...? At 15, I'm sorry but burds are what you should be getting passionate about". With boys like him in woodwork, I can quite understand the attraction of Home Economics. There have been plenty of girlz to inspire us! Gertrude Stein's "constant companion"- as they called her- was Alice B Toklas. After she went to live with Miss Stein in the rue de Fleurus in Paris, in 1908 she and Gertrude explored their interest in food, culminating in a fascinating cookbook, peppered with memories of Alice's life with Gertrude during the war and recipes like Coq Couvert de Cumin (Covered Cock with Cumin). Perhaps I should invite Rikki to dinner at my place to enjoy a flawless entree of Chilean sea bass dusted in cocoa powder with Guatemalan mangoes in a light chutney mix, mashed potatoes with a light cream fennel sauce and Anjou pears with yoghurt cream cheese and Grand Marnier swirls, topped off with a cappuccino con panna. If he wants to reciprocate... Educate me into his way of life. Something cleverly microwaved from Spa? That would be delightful! I've never been to Motherwell. The Scottish Sun's reactionary-of-choice, Jim Sillars wrote: "Peter Mandelson is entitled to feel miffed at being sacked for cuddling up to rich men, taking their cash for political purposes, doing them favours, and lying". But Mandy's gay. His spent all his life lying to hide his sexuality from dickheads like Jim Sillars who think gay men want the age of consent "as low as possible to ensure a continuous supply of sexual partners". He moaned: "Rewarding the rich has become Tony Blair's main hobby. He has dished out more peerages in four years than Mrs Thatcher did in 11". Q: What Party did we elect to run Britain? A: A Labour Government. Q: What Party has a sufficient majority in the Lords to halt gay human rights legislation? A: Conservative. And what unelected prick twice lost his seat only to be rewarded with his own weekly column in the Scottish Sun? A: Jim Sillars. I rest my case. There's hope for us yet. Former editor of The Sun Kelvin Mackenzie who has in the past referred to us as "botty burglars" and "shirtlifters" has joined forces with Labour Peer Lord Ali to launch a gay radio station. (Just a moment while I sit down). Mackenzie is chairman and chief executive of the Wireless Group whose radio stations include TalkSport and Scot FM. Lord Ali has been appointed chairman of the consortium, which is also backed by Scottish Media Group and the Carphone Warehouse and, if successful, will launch Purple Radio for London's listeners. And us...? In Scotland? Hello...? We'd be lucky to get a few minutes of airtime! Suddenly a window flew open and there was a rush of fresh air. Was it spring? No. The List magazine was celebrating its sex issue. Or was it making an issue of sex... Whatever. Not just St Valentine's timely entry onto my PC calendar but a flood of E-mails from enthused editor, Mark Fisher signalled this special event. And deservedly so. But why, oh why does one ever need an excuse for sex? Since most of us have It more times than we go to the cinema, why doesn't The List bulge with sex in every issue? As events guides go, The List is a good egg. It has to be. In London during the early seventies, a rather plain What's On was shoved aside by new girl on the block: Time Out. So good there was even a book. Gay bars were not only listed, they were occasionally photographed. From the inside! With the Oz trials hardly a distant memory, this was challenging stuff. Things moved fast in London. So goodbye the fifties' pecs Pictorial, sixties' Jeffrey and hello, seventies' Gay News! And gay ads. The ads became the subject of a court case. The protesters were a motley bunch that lived in mock-Tudor semis and bought their sheets from Brentford Nylons. (That was just me being nasty, which I accept is quite unnecessary, since they lost anyway)! Time Out pressed on regardless and largely 'straight-acting' gay readers rewarded them with pages and pages of personal advertisements for their columns of Lonely Hearts. Defined by sexuality and living it politically - as most gays do - we remain a good thermometer of sexual culture in Britain. From the Puritanism in the wake of the AIDS crisis to the whiff of sexual liberation riding on the back of the Internet, we turned a muddy corner into a new century. Now London has Ken Livingstone and its gay scene is as liberal as any other European city. How liberal, you ask? Frilly knickers? Smack botties? Well, put it this way... It is now quite possible to go for a drink at a bar, dressed in your best rubber, without ever having to go to the 'wee boys' room'! (I'll give you a moment)! Scotland doesn't yet have a bar with a safe place round the back for a quick fumble let alone the chance to sit in a leather hammock and pick nuts! Time Out hangs stubbornly onto listing gay venues separately and bravely carries commentary from a gay perspective. (Reminder: There are more gays than bums on pews today)! In Scotland, what gay commentators/journalists (and yes, editors)! Exist, are closeted or self-loathing if they can ever be arsed to see beyond Tanya from Livingston's tits. While morally conservative commentators flood the Scottish media, every moral issue has to be filled with outrage from a string of religionists. The List has had its moments too. No, it doesn't ask the Catholic Church or the Kirk's Board of Social Responsibility what it thinks of a new production, but a previous editor once insisted that gay clubs/events didn't need their own section because gay staff felt it singled out gays for special treatment. (Oh, yes! That old chestnut)! She appeared to suggest this was a liberal attitude. Like the Daily Record appears to think it quite liberating to say how OK it is to be lesbian, show a picture of a couple of them curled up together, have Old Mother Burnie sort out their angst, then ban them from ever advertising for partners in its personal columns. This sends a clear message that it is OK to be lesbian, providing it's titillating to others. Hide gay sexuality and you hide all our sexualities. Show it all! Celebrate it! Give us a bit more than a 'wee special' when we've behaved ourselves. I want the The List's Valentine's special every fortnight! I want the venues. The news. The politics. The commentary! Where? When? How? Who? Tits, bums, arse, cock... My efforts may not have been wasted since I have it on good authority that The List is planning a gay section. A couple of years ago the Daily Record was attacking Edinburgh children's TV presenter Gail Porter: "...Her hair piled high and her make-up plastered on... Wearing just a bra and pants on the front page of FHM..." Gail "angered parents". I expressed my concern that parents were reading this tripe in the first place, but now its prudish sister, the Sunday Mail was finishing her off after she turned up to work leathered! She was already in deep water after the Church complained about her calling herself a 'daughter of Satan'. Linda Watson-Brown sniffed: "It's not clever Gail, and it's not grown-up". Gail is now narrating the sex-swapping Channel Four documentary Boy Meets Girl. Go girl! New teen-mag, Mad About Boys was sure to evoke the wrath of Scotland's minions of sexually repressive commentators and journalists. Sure enough, The Scotsman's Linda Watson-Brown, the Record's Tom Brown and the Scottish Mail all pounced on early editions. There was a "wringing of liver-spotted hands" as Muriel Grey cheekily put it in the Sunday Herald. "Store bans 'sexual' pre-teen magazine", bellowed the Mail. Rather prematurely, I think, since publishers Planet 3 had not even asked Woolworths to stock it. The Scotsman's editorial went on to prescribe "what childhood should involve" while their sour feminist, Watson-Brown advised from La-La Land: "In one instance, it was claimed that when a young girl well under the age of consent wrote to an agony aunt to seek advice on a boyfriend who was asking for fellatio, she was told how to perform the act rather than how to get rid of him. In a society where young people say they do not believe oral sex constitutes 'real' sex, and where sexually transmitted infection rates are soaring, you do not have to be Mary Whitehouse to be worried by this". This 'letter' didn't appear in Mad About Boys, and even if it did, fellatio most certainly is 'real' sex and the magazine was right to advise how to do it properly. I'm all for sexual lessons that inform youngsters that sex is not just about getting screwed. Glasgow's Evening Times issued a "school alert on child porn social worker". He "sparked an alert after it emerged he lives opposite a primary school". 45-year-old Charles Doran was suspended from his job with East Renfrewshire Council after firefighters found the "stash" putting out a fire at his flat in Govanhill, opposite St Bride's Primary School. There was no suggestion he had ever taken pictures of children himself or had any direct contact with children in the course of his work. The allegations appeared to centre wholly on pictures of kids faces he'd cut out of magazines and stuck on the bodies of naked men and women having sex. The Evening Times were quick to point out: "The social worker lives alone in a first-floor flat... in Craigie Street, Govanhill... Dirty curtains were pulled closed all day on his front window. Inside the close, an LP cover has been used to patch up a broken window above the door to his flat. No-one answered when the Evening Times called at his flat today... A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council today confirmed that St Bride's school had been contacted regarding the situation..." I don't know why they didn't just give his full address and be done with it. garryotton@bigfoot.com A new book by Garry Otton is under preparation. www.SCOTTISHMEDIAMONITOR.com (c) Garry Otton 2000 Cut it out! * Katie Grant was in Scotland on Sunday promoting something nasty sticking up out of the water. "It says something remarkable about marriage, given the invective poured on it by unhappy individuals, that it still stubbornly refuses to go down the plughole". Try pulling the chain again, dear. "...The real truth is that although many people cock theirs up, marriage is a very good idea". Isn't anything with a cock up it? (Oops! Should I have said that)? * David Stenhouse in the Sunday Times Scotland's Ecosse magazine had some advice about dress: "Silk may be slinky, velvet may have a decadent sway, but any self-respecting member of the fashion cognoscenti knows the only material to be seen in is Harris tweed". I think Mr Stenhouse must be 'straight'. * Piers D'eere wrote in The Scotsman: "Peter and I go back a long way. In fact, he used to step out with Pippa, my ex. I remember once that she joked to me: 'Even Peter was better in bed than you. And he's gay'. I took it in good spirits and, shortly afterwards, we got divorced". * On the new gel being developed to protect women against HIV infection, the Catholic Church's new 'Sexfinder General', Father Danny McLaughlin told Scotland on Sunday how he didn't believe it would make people more sexually active. "People seem to be dangerously liberal in their attitude to sex already" ----------------------------------------------------------------------- INTERNATIONAL NEWS ================== From Rex Wockner YES, WE HAVE NO... Former Zimbabwean President Canaan Banana was released from Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison on Jan 29th after serving eight months for sexually assaulting and sodomizing male members of his presidential staff. Among those Banana intimidated into having sex were his bodyguard, cook and gardener. Banana was president from 1980 to 1987. The incidents came to light starting in 1995 when former Banana aide Jefta Dube shot to death a fellow policeman who had taunted him by calling him "Banana's wife." Dube testified that he and Banana had sex uncountable times over a period of three years. The first time, Dube said, he was drugged and woke up naked with a smiling Banana saying, "We helped ourselves." Other victims described a scenario in which Banana would ask them to play cards, offer them a drink, put on music, insist on teaching them to dance, then kiss and fondle them while dancing. SWEDISH COMMITTEE OKS GAY ADOPTION The Swedish Parliament's Committee on Homosexuality and Children has recommended that registered same-sex couples be permitted to adopt children, including children from foreign countries. The committee also said lesbian couples should have access to state-funded artificial-insemination technology. Sweden has a registered-partnership law that already grants gay and lesbian couples every other right of marriage. The changes are supported by the Social Democrats, the Centre Party, the People's Party, the Greens, and the Left Party. They are opposed by the minority Christian Democrats. The right-wing Moderaterna Party supports all the changes except for international adoption. The committee's recommendations were presented to the minister of justice. Several months of debate will take place and the government will then introduce legislation in parliament, which should cast a vote on the matter in early 2002. EUROPEAN BISEXUALITY CONFERENCE PLANNED The first European Bisexual Conference is scheduled for June 22nd to 24th in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. "European bisexuals will need to be able to find each other ... to exchange information and experience in the areas of freedom of sexual preference and the position of bisexuality within the various countries' societies," organizers said in a press release. For more information, visit http://www.intbiconf.org/ or phone 00-31-6-2843-8124. POPE DENOUNCES GAY MARRIAGE Pope John Paul II has again stated that gay marriages are unnatural. "Marriage is not just any old union between human persons, susceptible to being configured according to a plurality of cultural models," the pope said in a speech to Vatican bureaucrats. "You observe that in a very clear way in the ongoing attempts to present de-facto unions, including homosexual ones, as comparable to marriage, in which one negates, in fact, the natural character. "The natural consideration of marriage shows us that a couple unite themselves precisely because they are persons of different sexuality, with all the spiritual richness that this diversity has at a human level." AUSSIE COPS RECRUIT GAYS The police department of the Australian state of Victoria recruited gays and lesbians at Melbourne's gay Midsumma Festival. Acting Superintendent Stuart King said the force needs to reflect the state's ethnic, religious and cultural diversity. The recruitment booth was staffed by a deputy commissioner, an assistant commissioner, recruitment officers, members of the force's Gay and Lesbian Employment Network, and the force's gay and lesbian liaison officer. TAIWAN GAY BOOKSTORE ATTACKED Someone threw a brick through the window of the Taipei, Taiwan, gay bookstore Gin Gin's on Jan 27th, the Taipei Times reported. Dozens of local gay-rights groups have denounced the incident. "It seemed a minor case of a small gay and lesbian bookstore being attacked with a brick and the mere breaking of a window seems like no big loss at all," the organizations said in a statement. "But, if the attack on Gin Gin's was made because it's a gay and lesbian bookstore, then that sends a strong message of hatred against homosexuality. If the attack with a brick is tolerated today, we might see attacks with petrol bombs in the future." CAYMANS PREACHERS CHALLENGE GAY LAW CHANGE Religious leaders in the Cayman Islands have launched a petition against the UK's forced legalization of gay sex in the Caymans and other Caribbean territories. The UK imposed the change in January as local legislators continued to ignore prodding from London to repeal the laws. "The people of the Cayman Islands as well as other overseas territories have made it abundantly clear what our position is on this matter," said Cayman Ministers Association Chairman the Rev. Al Ebanks. The UK government said that the islands' gay-sex bans violated international human-rights accords the UK has signed. The forced repeal also applied to Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, Montserrat and the Turks and Caicos Islands. AUSSIES OPPOSE LESBIAN ACCESS TO SPERM BANKS Australians are opposed to letting single women and lesbians access artificial-insemination technology and sperm banks, a Morgan poll has found. The Federal Court cleared the way for such access last July. Fifty-four percent oppose letting single women access the procedures and 59 percent oppose giving lesbians access. Younger people were slightly less hostile to the idea. People over 50 disapproved the most. The poll questioned 1,116 men and women from age 14 up. IRELAND ISSUES REPORT FOR PARENTS OF GAYS The government's Equality Authority of Ireland and the organization Parents' Support have published a report entitled "If Your Child is Gay or Lesbian," the Irish Times reported. The document offers advice and experiences from parents of gays, said Tom Moffatt, minister of state at the Department of Health and Children. "Many parents of gay and lesbian children feel isolated and may not know that support is available," he said. Copies of the report are available from the Gay Switchboard at 00-353-1-872-1055. CHINESE POP STAR OUTED Chinese pop music star Mao Ning has been outed after being stabbed near a cruisy Beijing park allegedly by an angry ex-lover, Guan Ming. According to local media, Mao has departed from China to avoid reporters and distressed fans. Writing in The Advocate, gay journalist Steve Friess, who is spending a year working in China, said press coverage of the stabbing marked the first time Chinese media reported on a celebrity's homosexuality. Friess said the Chinese newsmagazine 21st Century called the incident "the biggest scandal to hit China's entertainment world in recent years." MAURESMO AND LOVER SPLIT Lesbian French tennis star Amelie Mauresmo and her lover of three years, Sylvie Bourdon, have broken up. "We have decided to go our separate ways," Mauresmo told Le Figaro. She said she hoped the media would respect her privacy. "I have the right to my secret garden," Mauresmo said. CHINESE CITY BANS MARRIAGE FOR HIV-POSITIVES The city of Chengdu, capital of the Chinese province of Sichuan, has passed a law banning HIV-positive people from getting married or working as surgeons or kindergarten teachers. It will take effect in May. The law also requires police to force-test prostitutes, drug users and members of other so-called high-risk groups within five days of an arrest. It further requires separate gaol cells for HIV-positive inmates and mandates testing for any resident who has been out of the country for more than a year. The legislation has been denounced by the Chengdu Workers Daily newspaper and the United Nations' AIDS program. Chengdu has 38 officially registered HIV-positive citizens. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FILMS ===== Malcom Epstein One of the phenomena of our time is the enduring interest in Elvis Presley since he left this life in 1977. A 1970 concert film made of his stage act at a Las Vegas hotel has been totally revamped very impressively with 40 minutes of new material which makes "Elvis: That's The Way It Is-Special Edition" essential viewing for the millions who still adore him. Vast improvements have been made to the sound quality-the original mono changed to an electrifying stereo digital. In the first version there were 16 songs. Now four have been added that weren't in the original. It was a tragedy Elvis died in his early forties, but his great success was marred enormously by a manager, Tom Parker, who took an outrageous 50 per cent from him and was totally obsessed with money. In the sixties he demanded a million dollars for each Presley appearance in a film plus 50 per cent of the box office receipts. But he wasn't the least concerned with the quality of the scripts. Consequently after the brilliant "King Creole" the Presley movies were totally unexceptional. Frankie Vaughan was the British counterpart to Elvis having many hit records in the fifties and was ruined by appearances in very humble black and white musicals here. Inadequate management let him go to Hollywood in 1960 with no script approval. After three movies he returned to a career in sharp decline. These were two great performers who didn't have the ability to talk for themselves and whose careers suffered appallingly without the right management. If only they had Barbra Streisand's shrewdness they would probably still be with us today. When you are as good looking as Keanu Reeves it can bring incredible envy. Critics have been saying for years he is bland playing heroes and it began to irritate him more than somewhat. So now be is playing the villain in two new movies opening the same week in March and the menacing edge he has is definitely a turn-on. In "The Gift (15) Cate Blanchett is a tarot card reader with a client married to Mr Reeves who gives her black eyes if she puts a foot wrong. The bearded Keanu is mean, moody and magnificent. It is a murder mystery well worth your time. "The Watcher" (15) has James Spader as an FBI agent and Keanu, can you believe, as a sadistic psychotic serial killer? He sends James a photograph of his intended victim and dares him to find her before he strikes again. The killer finally decides to murder the man chasing him. If you can't imagine Keanu Reeves as a ruthless murderer you must see "The Watcher". "About Adam" (15) is an Irish comedy set in Dublin that has Kate Hudson (offscreen she is the daughter of Goldie Hawn) as a waitress in a nightclub when she is not singing torch songs. She beams excitedly when the irrisistible Stuart Townsend wanders in to sit at one of her tables. She takes him home to meet her two sisters and brother who are all captivated by him. All are wondering whom he might jump into bed with first. Thank goodness this isn't another dreary film about Irish poverty. They are all comfortably off and you will enjoy watching them have a very good time. The popularity of boxing proves there are millions who enjoy watching potential brain damage in boxing rings so the extremes shown in the Japanese "Audition" (18) are bound to have a public. You don't need to know the plotline. Suffice to say a woman injects a man with a paralysing drug before banging metal rods into his body and up his nostrils. Sadists and masochists will love it. "Born Romantic" (15) covers the love lives of people who dance at a London salsa club and big, black and beautiful Adrian Lester is their regular taxi driver who gets them home safely. Craig Ferguson and Jane Horrocks are memorable. A salsa musical is very much overdue. "13 Days" (12) is a dramatisation of the nail biting negotiations that went on in the White House during the Cuban missile crisis in 1962 when the Kennedy administration discovered Russia was able to launch missiles from Castro's Cuba. Kevin Costner is the President's aide who constantly advises. How few of us realised this situation brought the world very near a nuclear war. "The Contender" (15) shows us another aspect of the dramas in American politics when the President chooses a woman, Joan Allen, to be his Vice President and her enemies desperately try to smear her reputation. Gary Oldman gives another inspired performance as a determined trouble maker. It is a political thriller that kept me engrossed. Current Releases The French "Second Skin" 18) has a wife stunned into realising her husband is having an affair with a man. And he can't make up his mind whom he really wants. It is sensitively made, but instead of a melodramatic ending it would have been a better idea if they had decided to share him. The critics have been very spiteful about "Hannibal" (18) probably because they know what ever they say won't stop it being one of the biggest moneymakers of the year as the sequel to "Silence Of The Lambs". Anthony Hopkins can't be topped playing again the smooth serial killer whom you know has eaten past victims. Some of the ludicrous plotlines in the first movie didn't stop it making a fortune. When FBI agent Jodie Foster entered a house entirely alone knowing she would find a dangerous serial killer I began chuckling at the incongruity. In the sequel Julianne Moore does the same thing. Audiences don't seem to care if the plotline is incongruous if they are enjoying being terrified. Christopher Eccleston is one of those young actors who needs a hit movie to become a superstar. Starring in the incredibly depressing "Jude" didn't help much. He went to Hollywood to play a villain brilliantly in a Nicolas Cage film. Now he has stayed there to play the lead in "Invisible Circus" as the lover of Cameron Diaz who can't be controlled when she leaves her family in America to join a group of German anarchists to blow up a building. Then she bitterly regrets it as someone dies in the explosion and she commits suicide. Years later, her younger sister decides to follow the route she took in Europe to understand why she did it. The girls here are lovely and Mr Eccleston is a masturbation fantasy. "Centre Stage" (12) is for ballet lovers. At a New York ballet school youngsters are rehearsing till they drop to become stars. It is directed by Nicholas Hytner who made "The Madness Of King George" that was loved by so many. --------------------------------------------------------------------- BOOKS ===== Dirk Kriete Sex Rites By Brandon Fox Leyland Publications GBP10.99 What a good do, I thought when this book arrived, a SciFi Novel to review at last. Well, it turned out to be a bit strange. You see, I like SciFi and I always have done but to read a book in which the main characters don't just fight or fly spaceships or morph into different things was somewhat disconcerting. I found it very distracting that the characters were evolving by a strange sort of gay tantric rituals and the whole story being based on a complete gay view of the world. I just kept thinking there's more to life then humping gorgeous young men (sad, isn't it). Call me old fashioned if you like, but I like my SciFi to be SciFi and my one handed reads to be just that: pure unadulterated sex in pages, mix the two and I just can't take either serious. Having said that, Sex Rites is nicely written and the story line is well thought out and if you're not quite as purist as I seem to have turned into, then you'll enjoy reading this erotic novel. Taboo The Lure of the Forbidden Edited by John Patrick STARbooks Press GBP10.99 As the many previous books by the same editor this book contains loads of stories in the gay genre and the mere number guarantees a little bit of satisfaction for any reader. Regardless of what you're into, you'll find something to turn you on in this book. Most of the stories are just a few pages long, so it's ideal bedtime reading, get your hot water bottle, limber up your hands and enjoy yourself. Sweet Temptations Edited by John Patrick STARbooks Press GBP10.99 Basically the same again as the previous book. Nothing new, nothing ground breaking, just loads of stories, some written well, some not so well, some hot, some not my scene at all (but they might be yours). The Best of the Super Stars 2001 Edited by John Patrick STARbooks Press GBP 8.99 A gay version of Hello! Magazine it is not, but I kept thinking that this is exactly what this book is striving to be. I found it mind numbingly boring and kept finding myself moving on to the next section and the next person being dealt with in this book. I've no time for sycophantic ooglings of the kind publicised in this book, I just can't build a head of steam (so to speak) out of who did it with whom and why and where. Especially not if the information is based on nothing much more than hearsay and gossip. Definitely not my cup of tea. Andy Martin Gay & Lesbian Online 4th Edition Jeff Dawson Alyson Books GBP12.99 It says on the front of this one "your indispensable guide to cruising the queer web" and, that is exactly what it is. There are more than 3,700 web sites in this one dealing with sites from chat rooms to dating to sex, Stonewall, gay youth and much, much more. Well put together and a useful and informative book. Please always remember the net is a living thing and sites come and go just as people come and go. So if you find that one or two sites from the book cannot be found, then do not blame Jeff Dawson as he does not have the power to stop time and should get a pat on the back for this collection as it must have taken a lot of time to collate all this info. --------------------------------------------------------------- ARTS ==== Martin Powell First the bad news. I've seen something that is rather good. It's Asylum by Nigel Charnock and Company. It's about five people who are either psychiatrists or patients or a mixture of the two. I think this ambiguity is deliberate and works well. People whose minds are screwed and screwing - again with ambiguities about their sexual orientation of some of the characters. I get the impression that Charnock does not think very highly of psychiatry. Charnock has the ability to overload speech, giving words multiple meanings and using one meaning in one sentence and another in the next sentence. It must be very difficult to write like this and still make it intelligible but Charnock manages it here, although it does require quite a lot of concentration to take it all in. Some years back a friend described Charnock's company as "doing the same things as Nigel Charnock does but not as well as he does them". This is not a criticism that could be validly applied today. The standard of acting these difficult parts is superb. Oh, and the intensity is lightened by a few songs at various times. Thought provoking, funny, and very good. So why is this bad news? Well the piece is being performed as far east as Munich, as far west as Dublin, as far south as Porto, but only as far north as Stockton on Tees. Ah well, perhaps it will arrive in Scotland later. Now the good news. X Factor Dance Company are presenting Deception at 7 venues throughout Scotland. Deception is about how when observing any relationship appearances can be deceptive. Perceptions are often coloured by one's own emotions and how we see what we want to see and want to be there but what we eventually discover is something quite different. This work follows a newly married couple through the highs and lows of married life as they reach a point where they are forced to confront the complex nature of their emotional and physical bond with some surprising results. The show is a mixture of choreography (by Alan Grieg and Christine Devaney), text, and sound (by Quee MacArthur). It sounds interesting.
