Body fascism is, all too sadly, very much part of the gay scene as any fat bastard will tell you. Just look at the images in the average gay magazine and you'll find that they are mostly of fairly skinny guys. I'm not sure if it's the egg wagging the chicken or the other way around: do gay mags cause gay men to prefer certain body types or do they merely reflect these preferences? There was a time, in the early days of AIDS/HIV, when fat guys were very much in demand as they "obviously didn't have AIDS". And the whole Bear thing has made fatter men a lot more marketable than we used to be. Personally, I've always preferred my guys a bit on the plump side - there's more to hold on to! Expose a skinny young man to my cooking for three months and he will be much improved at the end of that time. So, it's not the fear of rejection which has goaded me into making a conscious effort to lose weight, it's quite simply the realisation that 16 stones on a 5 foot 6 inch frame is leading to potential health problems. Now, exercise is a dirty word in my book - I get quite enough of that dragging all this extra weight around with me - so I'm afraid that it has had to be a diet (as self inflicted starvation is so quaintly known). So, here I am suffering on a daily intake of under 1000 kCalories - less than our bloody cats! I'm reminded of Jim Halcrow's reply when asked by his medical practitioner if he'd like to lose weight: "No. I'd like to have lost weight. It's the process I find distasteful." But it seems to have worked. By the time this ScotsGay is in your hands, I should weigh 15 stones. And I have vowed to lose a stone a month until I'm down to 12 stones. Why, you may well ask, have I chosen to share this highly personal information with you? It's quite simple. If my self resolve falters and I give up, I'm going to look a total pillock in front of 10,000 readers. That sort of pressure is a lot cheaper and hopefully more effective than a weekly Weight Watchers session. But I'm not going to fail: I'm Butch. I can take it! (Suppose that means I'm Versatile). So, off to comest. At least I genuinely like spinach! John Hein (15st 1lb) ------------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS ==== TEN E-QUESTIONS With a probable General Election in the offing, here are Ten Questions for Any Labour Party Candidates you may meet. They were recently circulated on the Internet by Mark Ynys-Mon of the Liberal Democrats. Whilst many of the areas of legislation are matters which the Scottish Parliament is dealing with rather differently to Westminster (see Holyrood article in this issue), Labour is a Unionist party and these questions are perfectly reasonable to ask of their candidates for the UK Parliament! * Why did the Home Secretary oppose the Liberal Democrat amendment to the Employment Relations Bill that would have ended discrimination against Gay men and Lesbians in the workplace? * Why has the Home Secretary insisted that the Labour Government has no intention of legislating to allow equal status for unmarried couples on pension, housing and next-of-kin rights? * If Home Office Ministers can appear at the Admiral Duncan pub to decry 'hate crimes' why did they vote down Liberal Democrat proposals to have homophobic attacks treated the same by the Courts in sentencing as race-hate attacks? * Why did the Labour Government choose to put the repeal [in England and Wales] of Section 28 into a House of Lords Bill, knowing that they would not be able to use the Parliament Act to force it through? * Why has the Labour Party opposed the scrapping of the discriminatory 'privacy clause' which makes it illegal for gay men of any age to have sex in private if more than two people are present? * Why did the Labour Government fight the Rank Outsiders case over gays in the military all the way to the European Court, and, even after losing the case, refuse to recognise the judgement as fair, civilised and equalising? * Why, in equalising the age of consent, did Labour link this legislation with 'abuse of trust' laws, thus reinforcing the media myth that gay men are paedophiles? * Why did Labour MPs vote against a Liberal Democrat amendment to ensure that the Sex Offenders Register was adjusted so that those people who were on it because of an Age of Consent offence with someone over sixteen would no longer be subjected to reporting requirements and public stigma? * Why did Labour MPs vote against a Liberal Democrat amendment which would have allowed a gay man to provide the same defence (of deception or genuine mistake as to partner's age as exists for heterosexual men) in age of consent trials? * Why is there doubt about the Labour Party including the repeal or Section 28 in its General Election Manifesto? If they don't, why should we trust them ever again? Peter Tatchell adds: The Lib Dems could have also added another to their list of 10 questions: * Why did Labour veto equal pension rights for same-sex couples and an explicit ban on homophobic discrimination under the Human Rights Act (a Lib Dem amendment drafted by me and tabled by Robert Maclennan)? HOLYROOD Tim Hopkins reports Scottish Executive Equality Strategy In November, after several months of consultation, Jackie Baillie, Minister for Social Justice, launched the Scottish Executive's Equality Strategy. This is intended to ensure that the principle of equal opportunities for all runs through all the work of the Executive, including policy and legislation. The strategy is based on the definition of 'equal opportunities' in the Scotland Act, which includes sexual orientation, and it now seems accepted by the Executive that this includes equality issues for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The strategy includes a number of targets over the next year for work on: 'mainstreaming' equality through Scottish Executive departments, consulting with groups who are discriminated against, research into discrimination, public awareness raising, and improving the Executive's own employment practices. The Equality Network is pressing the Executive on the following key points: * That the promotion of equality for all, explicitly including LGBT equality, is a requirement in all policy and legislation; * Regular open consultation on the Equality Strategy, between the Executive and the LGBT communities across Scotland; * Research to identify how best to monitor discrimination against LGBT people, and a research program to identify its nature and extent. Age Of Consent As we previously reported, in an overwhelming vote in January 2000, the Scottish Parliament endorsed the reduction to 16 of the age of consent for sex between men, and gave the go-ahead to the Westminster Parliament to enact this change for Scotland, despite it being a devolved matter. The House of Commons had voted repeatedly to equalise the age at 16 for all across Britain (17 in Northern Ireland), but each time, the House of Lords had blocked the change. At the end of November, the House of Commons was finally able to invoke the Parliament Acts to bypass the Lords' opposition, and the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 2000 was passed. After decades of campaigning by activists across the country, the age of consent finally became equal when the new Act came into effect, on 8th January 2001. Convention Rights (Compliance) Bill This Bill is currently passing through the Scottish Parliament. Its purpose is to bring various parts of Scots Law into line with the European Convention on Human Rights. The part of the Bill of particular interest to us is part 4, which repeals the law that makes consensual sex between adult men in private illegal if there are more than two people taking part or present. As far as we are aware, there have been no recent prosecutions for this offence in Scotland, but there certainly have under the equivalent law in England. Most notorious was the 'Bolton 7' case in the late 90's, when a number of men narrowly escaped prison sentences for sex in private involving three people, something that is entirely legal in the heterosexual case. A man prosecuted in a similar recent English case complained to the European Court of Human Rights, and the Court ruled last July that this unfair law breached his right to respect for his private life, enshrined in Article 8 of the European Convention. With the equalisation of the age of consent, and assuming that this new Bill passes in the summer, the most serious discriminatory aspects of sex offences law in Scotland, discriminating against men who have sex with men, will finally be gone. However, the law in this area remains unsatisfactory. The structure of the law encourages heavier penalties against men who commit very minor offences with other men, such as consensual sex in the bushes of a park, than would be the case for a similar heterosexual act. At the same time, the law can give the impression that sexual assaults against men are less serious than similar assaults against women: for example male rape is rape in English law, but the archaic offence of sodomy in Scots law. The Equality Network is making representations to the Scottish Executive about these problems. We would be happy to receive any comments or suggestions. Housing (Scotland) Bill The Housing (Scotland) Bill is currently going through the Scottish Parliament. It makes an important change to the law on succession to a tenancy. Under the current law, if a person who is the tenant in rented accommodation shares that accommodation with a same-sex partner, and the partner who is the tenant dies, the other partner has no right to take over the tenancy, and may legally be thrown out of the house. This is in contrast to a married partner or a mixed-sex cohabiting partner of a tenant, who has the right to inherit the tenancy. The Housing Bill removes this inequality for local authority and housing association tenancies- in future a same-sex partner of the tenant will be able to inherit the tenancy, so long as the partners have lived together for at least six months 'in a relationship which has the characteristics of that between husband and wife'. This change does not apply to rented accommodation in the private sector, something which the Equality Network continues to press the Executive to address. The briefings we submitted to Parliament on the Housing Bill proposals, and on the Convention Rights (Compliance) Bill described above, will shortly be available on the EN website, at http://www.diversity.org.uk/equality/ Section 2A Repeal Takes Effect As was widely reported in the news media, the repeal of Section 2A, enacted by the Scottish Parliament last June in the Ethical Standards in Public Life etc. (Scotland) Act 2000, came into effect on 29th March 2001. After a 13-year campaign in Scotland, launched in Edinburgh's Blue Moon Cafe a few days after Section 28 was first announced, in December 1987, the section is finally gone. At the same time, guidance about the conduct of sex education in schools was issued by the Scottish Executive to education authorities. The guidance is reasonably balanced, and can be found on the Scottish Executive website, at: http://www.scotland.gov.uk/library3/education/finalcircular.pdf Convention Rights (Compliance) Bill This Bill includes, amongst other things, repeal of the discriminatory law that makes consensual private sex between adult men illegal if there are more than two people taking part or present. It was debated in the Scottish Parliament on 21st March, and the principles of the Bill were approved by 94 votes to 0, with 13 abstentions. The abstentions were all Tories; all the other parties supported the Bill. It now goes on to its detailed Committee debate stage (stage 2), followed by the final debate in the whole Parliament (stage 3) in June. Mental Health Law Proposals The Millan Committee report, on a replacement for the Mental Health (Scotland) Act 1984, has recently been published. The report recommends that the new legislation should be based on an explicit principle of non-discrimination on grounds of physical disability, age, gender, sexual orientation, language, religion, or national or ethnic or social origin. It also recommends that the definition of "nearest relative" (someone who under the new Act will in certain circumstances have a right to act on behalf of a mentally disordered person) be widened to include a same-sex partner on the same basis as an opposite-sex cohabiting partner. The Equality Network will be lobbying over the content of the new legislation. We would welcome any comments on issues related to the mental health system and LGBT people that you feel we should raise- our address, phone and e-mail details are in the Listings. SNIPPETS WORDS The Poet & Writers Group at the GLC, are collating items in preparation to publish an anthology of the written word, to be released in time for the Autumn 2001 Glasgay! festival. KILT According to an e-mail we've received, a novel type of kilt is being sold over the Internet: "A utilikilt only costs about 65 quid. Well affordable. I've been wearing mine around London all the time since I got it - it's great. Horny as hell, and cheap enough to knock around in." See for yourself at http://www.utilikilts.com/ MEASURED RESPONSE ScotsGay is supporting the campaign to retain traditional weights and measures and will not be printing any Metric units in our personal advertisements. As we shall be rounding down to the nearest inch (in the case of linear measurement) and up to the nearest stone (in the case of weight), advertisers may find it in their own interests to submit only in Imperial Measure. Last year, a sorry mixture of militant religionists, moral conservatives, millionaires and the Scottish media combined to turn Scotland into a snapshot of Berlin before World War II. If that sounds a tad dramatic, remember Berlin had dozens of gay magazines: L'Amitie, Die Soune, Eros, Inversions, Der Strom, Fanfare, Friendship and Freedom to name a few. They were filled with gay ads. There were between 50 and a hundred gay bars and a thriving gay centre with the world's largest gay research centre and library. Life in Berlin was so liberal there was cross-party support in 1929 for a ban on all anti-gay laws. It was too late. In February 1933 the Nazi's seized power with a new message of moral certainty. They used the media to further their propaganda of lies, slander and distortion. The gay centre and library was burnt and a model of the head of its leader was paraded through the streets on a stick. Pubs and clubs were closed down and thousands of gays rounded up by secret police and murdered. Many were thrown into concentration camps before the war had even started. Of course, it wasn't as bad as that in Scotland. Not quite. There were some beatings, a couple of murders, homophobic posters, newspapers banning gay personal ads, diagrams on how to spot a homosexual and hate-filled rant in the press, but the Executive stood fast and with a fistful of concessions, repealed Section 2A. It just took from the announcement of repeal on 29 October 1999 until 29 March 2001 to do it. On the day the Clause was repealed, on Thursday, 29 March 2001, we were still in the grip of a foot and mouth epidemic. The burning funeral pyres of dead farm animals and ubiquitous disinfectant baths across the country served as a poignant reminder of the vigilance the Government was imposing to prevent the virus spreading further. And it rained. A small story had appeared in the Scottish Sun: "Work pals beaten for being 'gay'." Mark Robertson and Vincent Demarco, both 20-year-olds had badly beaten two lads, Kenneth McLellan and Ian Crew while they walked home together after a night out in Edinburgh. The thugs simply thought they were gay. Demarco had told the police: "It was a square go and I won, poofs get away with everything". A Sheriff awarded them both with community service. With repeal of Section 2A, the Church issued warnings to parents to be vigilant of 'unacceptable material' they had always insisted was being stockpiled by 'militant gays' for use in Scottish schools. The Scotsman (yes, The Scotsman)! celebrated repeal with the apparent discovery of a "pervert's primer" that "reads like the lurid index of a pornographic magazine". Their own full-time anti-porn campaigner Linda Watson-Brown could have penned the editorial, or their columnist Martin Clarke like one of the ubiquitous Daily Record editorials he penned in support of Keep the Clause. The Scotsman declared, "a line has been crossed" which was "all too obvious to every parent". Healthwise's out-of-print publication Taking Sex Seriously was not intended to be handed out to children, but to sex education teachers. Not something made abundantly clear with the header: "Do you want your child to be exposed to this?" Preparing teachers for awkward questions, the booklet listed sexual activities talk of which is common currency in most school playgrounds today. Amongst them, anal intercourse, using sexual toys, S&M, partner swapping, kissing, fellatio... Healthwise was labelled "controversial", and a sorry shower of militant religionists were lined up by reporter Kate Foster and Andrew Denholm to condemn the "sex guide". Valerie Riches of Family and Youth Concern said: "This is exactly why we are trying to keep the clause and why it shouldn't have been repealed in Scotland. Some of the acts listed are clearly of a homosexual nature". Michael Willis of Parent Truth Campaign "who fought against the repeal of the clause" said: "...Modesty, commonsense and decency are being eroded away". Danny McLoughlin promised this wouldn't be used in Catholic schools before regretting "there are parts of the country where there is no provision for Catholic education". Phil Gallie for the Tory's said: "Sex education should be about the human body and reproduction". An unnamed SNP spokesman called the material "inappropriate" and even the Christian Institute's Colin Hart declared he would be letting parents know about "the condom demonstrations, the gay sex lessons and the general lack of any sense of decency". (They had already picked out the best bits of Taking Sex Seriously and sent it to 2,000 churches and run off a report to all the Scottish MPs and MSPs). Attracting this amount of press attention was a major coup for the religionists. Preparing to throw everything- including poor marks in English - in the lap of recalcitrant sex education teachers, The Scotsman's education editor, Seonag Mackinnon added: "British young people are among the worst in the industrialised world at reading and writing". She pointed to the "fringes" of sex education- without mentioning the Christian Institute- to blame Britain's high rate of teenage pregnancy on a liberal sex education programme that had not even started! The editorial fumbled around in the dark for the light switch. "Sex education was introduced in schools to guide the young in childbirth and in the basics of sexual behaviour in the context of stable and loving relationships. The latest proposals, spanning discussion of sadism, sexual toys, multiple partnering and tying up, can lay no claim to such a justification". But why not? Quite apart from the implication that sex education teachers are somehow not to be trusted to deliver advice appropriately, are not art, love, emotion and feeling also valid expressions of sexuality interacting with sexual play? God forbid that sex should ever be reduced to the perfunctory and mechanical that some moral conservatives want. The editorial squealed: "It treats all activities as equal and equivalent... It raises those activities that degrade human beings and treat them as no more than sexual objects for the infliction of pain and abuse to the level of normalcy". I wonder what part of the word 'education' they don't understand? I cannot imagine any sex education teacher, answering questions on S&M, legitimising its expression as a tool to seriously degrade a partner. This whole debate has nothing to do with the educational challenge of sex education or the needs of pupils, but a way in which sex education can be used to address the anxieties of an adult society unable to cope with the realities of adolescent sexuality. The Scottish Daily Mail had a similar story on their front page: "PUPILS' SEX GUIDE SHOCK". This was described as a "new twist". But it wasn't. Same stroke: Different booklet. The Primary School Sex and Relationship Pack, approved by the Executive and already widely used, taught kids the appropriate answer to words they had already heard. Words like 'lesbian'. The answer was: 'A woman who has a sexual relationship with another woman'. The editorial went delirious. "Children as young as nine are being taught how to use condoms; told to write stories about lesbian families; contraception 'kits' are to be demonstrated to them by teachers; and detailed descriptions of homosexual sex (formerly banned under Section 28) feature in the education 'pack'." The tabloid trawled the new guidance looking for marriage. "Although it mentions marriage three times, it does not give it any preference..." With the battle cry going up amongst religionists for extra vigilance against liberalism, they issued a clear warning: "Parents are now in the front line as regards monitoring what their children are taught in school as sex education". The Christian Institute's press office will always be open to homophobia and you can be sure that they will have no compunction if the outcome of their actions hurts us. Religionists are not just waging a moral campaign, but a political one too. An unholy alliance has formed, vilifying Wendy Alexander, the minister closely associated with repeal of Section 2A in Scotland who is edging ever closer to the position of First Minister. The knives are out! "SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT... McLeish warning to hapless Wendy", snapped the Scottish News of the World. "I confess that the wee lady scares me", cried Bill Greig in the Scottish Sunday Express. "Wendy baiting may yet become a national sport", giggled Iain Martin in Scotland on Sunday. Referring to Britain's Foot and Mouth epidemic, Martin Clarke in the Scottish Daily Mail sniped: "Henry McLeish told prospective American tourists not to worry about the 'little problem' they may have heard we've been having here in Scotland. Seems a remarkably casual way to dismiss Wendy Alexander to me". Nonetheless, last year she was rated top Scottish parliamentarian by Channel Four and walked away with a handsome glass trophy. Unfortunately, she only got as far as Heathrow Airport before dropping it! Wee Wendy has fought off a catalogue of smears that included her turning down Henry McLeish's offer of the water portfolio. McLeish's adviser, Peter McMahon, making the announcement public before she had even been informed, didn't help. She is under a lot of pressure with less staff than the First Minister. She was right to blow the whistle. She also has the job of running Labour's election campaign in Scotland. Then there was the appointment of Rod Lynch as chief executive of visitscotland. After it was discovered he held another executive position, he was sacked after just four days. Wendy Alexander was unfairly put in the firing line. Andrew Nicoll, the Scottish Sun's Political Reporter wrote: "...They say Wendy Alexander has a brain the size of a planet. What they forgot to mention is that a lot of planets are just swirling balls of poisonous gas... (The First Minister) will dump her as soon as the General Election is over". She works in a parliament with very strong women doing a lot of hard work and weak men who brief the press against them. But being a woman, what should have been a matter of principal became a "tantrum" from a "bossy" woman with a "petulant manner". According to Wilson's Week in the Sunday Mail, "Wendy threw a tantrum at the prospect of having to justify Labour's soaring water taxes. She stamped and puffed and hollered so loud Henry backed down". The homophobic Scottish Mail's Hamish Macdonell sniffed: "He asked her to do something and she disobeyed him". Shortly after, 39-year-old civil servant, Andrew Baird who had previously worked with Sir Malcolm Rifkind was moved to another department over an apparent inability to work with her. According to the Scottish Mail, she would "frequently nag him to work to her rules". Outside the old seven-storey red-glass office block that once housed the Daily Record at Anderston Quay, in Glasgow that wet Thursday in March, JCB's were smashing down through twisted supports and reinforced concrete, floor by floor. Like the hopeless efforts of the Government to contain Foot and Mouth, behind the warning notices that forbade entry, the JCB's smashed through the swing-doors that once ejected editor Martin Clarke. They drilled through the floor where he once sat and pummelled through the glass windows he once looked out of. Where once editors and journalists sat talking on the telephone to moral arbiters and religionists, tightly steering the Scottish nation onto the jagged rocks of moral conservatism, vertical blinds waved helplessly like broken teeth out of a gaping mouth of broken concrete and twisted steel. A cloud of concrete dust lifted in the wind and scurried down the road under Kingston Bridge as fast as the thoughts and deeds of the moral arbiters who worked there. Like the wind, they would be carried away too. Other swing-doors would be opened. Somehow, somewhere in the future there would be another opportunity. We must be vigilant. © Garry Otton 2001 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Inverness/Inbhir Nis ==================== Well, hi again everyone. Here I am with news and gossip from the Inverness area (not that there's an awful lot to report this month), but I've been out and about with my eyes open and my ears to the ground, watching and listening for anything which might be of interest... So, here goes... Are you sitting comfortably?... Then I'll begin. Shock... Horror... Our local papers have been filled with an astounding revelation that a brothel... yes, you did read it correctly... a brothel is supposedly operating quite successfully in one of the more "upmarket" areas of this fair city. Local reaction has been very mixed, with some people (customers, perhaps?) writing in praise of the operation, saying that it is a very welcome and very useful facility which is much needed in order to bring Inverness (as a major city) into the 21st Century and on a par with other cities such as Glasgow and Edinburgh... However, there are plenty of others who utterly condemn the person (who I would call "very enterprising") for running the operation... narrow minded bigots from the Free Church and those others who go on about the proximity of children's play areas to the house in question, as well as the "disgusting, sick types" who patronise the establishment. It's just a pity that there isn't a similar establishment for men (i.e. exclusively gay) similar to those that can be found in Amsterdam, Berlin and Prague... Now, that would really upset the applecart! Next, after a recent, very enjoyable, long weekend visit to Glasgow where I learned of possible plans for one of the two main gay sauna and healthclub establishments in Glasgow (I won't say which one) to establish itself here in Inverness (or, possibly, Elgin). I'm sure that there would be a demand for something like this up here, even though we have establishments which already cater for the so called "straight market" (but which are also frequented by members of the local gay community). An exclusively gay health club would certainly be well patronised by locals and those travelling from further afield, but, unfortunately, once again, here in the Highlands, we are met with a flood of anti-gay, homophobic bigotry. I hope that the plans do come to fruition, as I, for one would certainly give the venue regular patronage. Meanwhile, the tourist season is taking off, slowly, but surely, with reported increased bookings in hotels and guesthouses... unfortunately, Inverness does not have an exclusively gay hotel or guesthouse... Why, I wonder does some enterprising person not open one? It could do very well. Foot and Mouth restrictions appear to have been relaxed to some extent, so that the number of tourists visiting the area is increasing steadily. Many of them have money to spend and local shops and businesses are benefitting considerably from the Pink Pound. Pubs are getting busier and a steady increase in support at our two local gay friendly venues (Royal Highland Hotel and Nico's Bar/Bistro) has definitely been noticed... Keep up the support, guys and gals... You're doing a good job. Local "cruising areas" have seen an increase in visitors lately, but, although well patronised, I would issue a warning to be careful, as there have been a number of violent incidents and muggings at the two main sites recently. I would encourage any "victims" to either report directly to the police or to report the matter via an intermediary such as Reachout Highland. Reachout Highland are currently in the process of applying for grants and allowances to enable them to continue with the excellent service which they provide in relation to sexual health matters and also in acting as a "liaison" with various groups throughout the community. I wish them every success and hope that they will continue with their good work and continue to go from strength to strength. That's about all for now. Take care and enjoy lots of happy and safe sex. I went to speak to her and wasn't suprised when she told me that she was starting up her own cabaret act. Her name is Lauren Wilkins and although she's only 19 years old has been singing for around two and a half years at karaoke sessions and in pubs (Brannigans, Homestead). She is a regular up in the Stag and has been in quite a few competitions. She was born in Edinburgh but has had gigs in Jedburgh and as far away as Oban. Her material is, at the moment, all cover versions. She enjoys singing Rock, some Pop and R&B and her rendition of Jim Diamond's I Should Have Known Better and her Atomic Kittens Whole Again are not to be missed. Lauren also plays drums but that is one talent I missed out on. She enjoys singing to a gay audience and the response she gets is astounding. Her manager cum lighting cum sound technician says it is the first time he has taken on anyone new for years. He claims that when he first heard her singing he knew she had a voice that had to be listened to. "I may be the brains behind it but she certainly is the voice", he said. Lauren has a few gigs lined up in and around Edinburgh but she is trying to hit the cabaret circuit in Scotland. She is playing at CC's on the 9th of May but her ambition is to sing with the stars and see her name in lights. Let's hope she doesn't forget us when this happens for I have every faith that it will! She would like to say "thank you" to her gofur Rab for always being there for her and to Mo and Anne at the Stag for giving her a starting block and somewhere to practice. If anyone would like to hear a demo tape or to book Lauren you can get a hold of her manager (Rab) on 0776 7832739. pink parenting The other day, I received in the mail some information about a group that has been set up to deal with Gay and Lesbian parenting. They are looking for volunteers to help to deal with enquires about gay parenting and general enquires about the group via a telephone helpline. There is to be a training day in Edinburgh on the 27th May for people interested in volunteering for the helpline. If you're interested, please contact Sue Robertson at Lesbian Mothers (Scotland), 13 Gayfield Square, Edinburgh. Phone: 0131-556 3899/4563. E-mail opfs@gn.apc.org.uk Pink Parents are also running a couple of workshops in Edinburgh on 26th May which may be of interest. The first is for lesbians and gay men who are interested in having a baby by insemination. This a chance to discuss the pros and cons of the various options. The Parenting Support Workshop is where you can meet and discuss the problems and challenges of gay parenting, eg homophobic bullying, dealing with prejudice, and sources of support available. The cost for both these workshops is GBP25pp (GBP20 for Pink Parent members) or GBP10 for means tested benefits recipients. They run from 10.30am-5pm. Playbus crêche provided. Love to all Heather xxx E-mail: heather@drink.demon.co.uk ------------------------------------------------------------------- Glasgow/Glaschu =============== Arse bandit with attitude HIYA SCUMBAGZ! Might as well kick off with what's happening on the club night scene. As you all no doubt know, Glasgow has quite a few more of these weekly and monthly bashes than we had last year, and they seem to be going down a storm with the disco bimbos. I'm actually writing this and watching what's going on in the Glasgow chatroom at Gay.Com on the other computer. The place seems to be full of sad fuckwits moaning that they had a great time at Aurall, but didn't get a shag, so they're now in sleazyEverything trying to get a pull in the chatrooms! Anyway, back to Aurall - This seems to be a clubnight which is really pulling them in at the moment, and it would appear that they've been having quite an effect on the dwindling numbers at Benetts on Sunday nights. I've had quite a lot of very positive feedback about this particular clubnight, so it certainly seems to be going from strength to strength. Unlike most of the other clubnights, Aurall is held weekly, and you can check it out at Mas, Royal Exchange Square every Sunday night. The truly pretentious among you might like to check out their website, which is as far up it's own arse as possible - http://www.aurall.com/ "The DJ takes you on a journey.. warm, sensual and charged. This room is the entree...Do you have what it takes to take a bite from the main course?" Yup, the whole site is full of nauseating shite like this and should give everyone but the most die hard clubbers a fucking good laugh! Tickets are GBP5 for members and GBP7 for the peasants, which isn't too bad for a Sunday night so check it out. Another clubnight which you lot all seem to be raving over is Fusion, held on the Renfrew Ferry. Next date is Saturday June 16th and tickets are a fiver. For those of you who're fed up of all the clubnights playing House, Hard House, Very Hard House, Dark House, Deep House, Pumping House, Up For It House, Hector's House (Do you mean Domiciliary Loud Noise? Ed.), and fancy a Goth clubnight, check out Bedlam at The Queen Margaret Union at Hillhead. This is a monthly clubnight, and the next one is on Saturday 5th of May from 8.30pm-2am, with tickets at only GBP3 available from Missing Records and on the door. Bedlam will then be continuing in its normal slot on the last Saturday of the month from 26th of May. The monthly Fruitfly clubnight goes ahead on the 19th of May. 11pm-4am as usual down the Arches, and tickets are the usual ten quid. (Ten fucking quid?) Oh - and they're playing Uplifting to Pumping House (and yes - I am laughing my tits off as I type this!) And finally - there's a new clubnight starting in Paisley. Called Fair Play - Regardless, this will kick off on Thursday nights in Liberty's, 6 New Sneddon Street, Paisley. It's a new attitude free mixed night, and you can get discount VIP passes from some of the gay bars in Glasgow. If there are any clubnights I've missed out, just let me know and I'll give them a mention. Of course - the big night out for me next month will be seeing Motorhead down at the Barrowlands, but I don't expect I'll be seeing many of you queeny little STEPS fans down there! I also believe that Alan Joy let it slip that the Goldilocks column is one of the few parts of ScotsGay he reads - can't think why as us rockers tend to take the piss out of the club scene! Still on the subject of Club Nights - Planet Peach are having a fairly major refurbishment at the moment. The first phase will be to include parts of the club which are not currently used, and when this is complete, the part that is used just now on Monday and Tuesday nights will be redecorated. There are various drinks promos on the go, and Gordon and Shaun have plans to bring back the strippers and various PAs in the near future. The recurring complaint I hear regarding Planet Peach is about the number of straights in the place, so perhaps it's time for a change in the door policy. Glasgow is rapidly going the same way as Manchester did a couple of years ago - what used to be gay venues became increasingly taken over by the straights. The gay community then felt they were living in some sort of freak show and deserted the scene in droves, and it took a very harsh change in door policy to reverse the situation. The Polo and Benetts may be thinking only of a fast profit in allowing so many straights in at the weekend, but the exodus to Fusion, Fruitfly and Aurall should be sounding a few alarm bells. Most of you will be aware that Caffe Clarty has now closed down. Not sure if the food or the poor service was responsible for its demise, but it's gone now and the plans are for it to be turned into a trendy mixed pub. No doubt this means yet another over hyped, over priced venue with shit service staffed by arrogant queeny little nobodies hired for their looks rather than their ability. (Another Dels then?) Who gives a fuck anyway? Just another crappy gay venue that won't be getting the Pink Pound any more! > > > Result! I've been asked by Cathy from the Steve Retson Project to give a mention to a new service being setup for young gay men on Saturday afternoons. They're specifically targetting guys under 25 to offer counselling on general health, HIV counselling, safer sex advice and Hepatitis screening and inoculation. I'm quite shocked at the level of ignorance that young guys have regarding safer sex, so it's good to see services targetting them. For those of you who don't know about the Steve Retson Project, they're located in the Sandyford Building up in Sauchiehall Street, and offer free testing and advice for gay men. I was up there recently for a Hepatitis and HIV check up and can recommend the friendly service. No probing questions or disaproving comments about your sexual history! (I don't think they would have believed me about my past!) Even if you're not indulging in bareback fucking, you should still get in touch with Steve Retson and arrange for Hepatitis vaccinations, as this is a subject most gay men still seem incredibly uninformed about! One of the big events this month was the joint Switchboard/GLGBTC fundraising Ceilidh in the Trades Hall. As expected, tickets sold out well in advance, and those of you who left it too late were out of luck. I'm not too sure of the total raised, but a big thanks to all those who volunteered to staff the door, the bar and sell raffle tickets. The place was absolutely packed out, and the band Macapella had everyone up dancing. Another of these events is due to be held in November, and due to its popularity, this will be held in a bigger venue. Everyone I spoke to was having a great time, and after 4 hours of drinking and dancing, a large crowd made their way over the road to continue partying in Benetts. It was nice to see that most of the crowd had made the effort to dress for the occasion, and I'd better also say thanks to all of you who remarked on how smart I look dressed up for a change. There are big changes coming up at the Candle Bar shortly. You all probably know that Jeanette has been waiting on getting the paperwork finalised for the refurb, and it looks as though this will be going ahead at the end of this month. The plan is to move the bar and rearrange the whole place to make more room, and the plan is to auction off all the fixtures and fittings in aid of the Glasgow LGBT Centre. The Waterloo did the same a while back when they had a refurb, and it's hard to believe some of you sad twats actually bought the naff 80's tat that used to adorn the place! If you're not a regular in the Candle Bar, you really should check out the tacky cabaret on Sunday afternoons with Angie O. She doesn't half chuck out some abuse, but thankfully most of it seems to get directed at either the staff or the fag-hag Sharons cluttering up the place. I've been down a few times over the past couple of weeks, and the place is always out the door! Definitely worth a try! The Candle Bar is also packed out on Tuesdays when the cabaret is on, and also gets very busy when they have a DJ on Friday and Saturday nights. For those of you wondering about last month's cover - no, it wasn't a still from "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" That was Jon and Brendan from the Revolver Bar, who are friendlier in real life than they looked in that photo! Anyway, The Revolver Bar (or the Revolting Bar as it would appear to now be known) has been packing them in since their opening night, and I have had an absolutely incredible amount of mail and general feedback about the place. Most of you have been telling me how much you like the fact that you can actually hold a conversation in the place, and the absence of loud queeny music is one of the reasons the place is becoming so popular. Early days yet, as the place is still in the honeymoon period, but I think this place should be a great success! For those of you who've not been down to check it out yet - it's a basement bar in John Street. They serve real ale, have a pool table and the 3000 track juke box is free of charge (and thankfully free of Steps, Westlife and all the usual queeny shite). The Revolver have also started a quiz on Tuesday evenings with a GBP50 prize. I've not been down to check this out yet, but I've heard good reports so far. Despite all the leading edge technology, the place does have a few nostalgic touches - Brendan still refuses to chuck the combats which have been out of fashion since 1996, and on Sundays you can play all those 1980's retro arcade games on the big screen. Time for the Goldilocks Pub and Club Awards based in the votes sent in to my website which you all enjoy so much, and occasionally try to nobble (unsuccessfully). The Waterloo won the Best Pub award as usual with 38% of the votes, with The Revolver in second place at 23% and The Candle Bar just behind them at 22%. Best Club went to Benetts with 76% of the votes, and the Best Club Night Award has been suspended for the moment until the system is reconfigured to take votes for the newer Club Nights which have recently started up. As usual, The Waterloo was way out in front with 41% of the votes in the Best Service Award with The Candle and The Revolver in joint second place. Natalie Barnes down in the Candle Bar will be glad to know that Jules, Jean Paul, Stella and the rest of the staff got an amazing 49% of the votes in the Prettiest Bar Staff category. Yet again, Delmonicas are way out in front for the Biggest Dump Award, scoring a massive 44% of the votes! SNIPPETS AND STUFF The GLGBT Centre have been doing a major overhaul to their website which now looks very professional and slick. They're still looking for new volunteers, so if you're interested get in contact with The Webteam. >>> Still down at the GLGBTC, Diverse artists are holding various meetings over the next few weeks, and anyone interested in poetry, art etc should get in touch if you would like the chance to exhibit your work. >>> In addition to the usual Karaoke on Saturday nights at the GLC Cafe, Gordon is now hoping to start a talent spot during the evening. Any budding singers or comedians with an act should see him for further details. >>> I see that Benetts have finally decided to take their webshite offline after me moaning that it hadn't been updated in months, and was still advertising their last Hallowe'en Night. I wonder how long it will be this time before they lose interest and don't bother to keep it up to date. Right then - I think that's about it for this month, so I'd better get off to bed now. Keep all that smutty e-mail coming in and I'll be back next month. Happy shagging! Goldilocks E-mail:- goldilocks@gay-glasgow.co.uk Webshite:- http://www.gay-glasgow.co.uk/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- Edinburgh/Dun Eideann ===================== Hiya! Ali here again with another Edinburgh update, full of the usual gossip and events... Starting with Alan Joy's Mingin' night and wasn't last weekend fun? Alan discovered as he was sorting out his records that something got spilt into his record box. The record covers had turned to paper mache and stuck to his records! Lovely. Alan had to spend the afternoon washing his records. The tickets for the Mingin' Ahoy! boat trip have gone on sale, priced at GBP10 each. Only two tickets will be allowed per person to make sure as many regular Mingers have an opportunity to get a ticket. Not all the tickets have gone - they'll be available at the next Mingin' too (and you will be able to buy another two, even if you got some the first time round). Alan won't be selling them anywhere else though as he wants it to be purely a Mingin' party. Well, once again, Teviot Row failed to get it right with the fire alarm at the Taste/Luvley/Joy night. This time it went off ten minutes before they were due to open and then again at 11pm, just as people were beginning to arrive in numbers. Of course, there was no fire but it took the venue, the fire brigade and an engineer over an hour to find the fault by which time the queue outside was horrendous. Thankfully they had been granted a licence until 5am (a last-minute decision from the Council) which meant they still had a good run at it. The figures haven't yet been finalised but I'll let you know how much we raised for Waverley Care/SOLAS as soon as I can. If you have seen the new Joy flyers, you will already be aware that Joy will now run fortnightly Saturdays at Ego, starting on April 28th. Alan will be away on holiday for the Joy on May 26th so they have invited Kev Wright from Sublime to take his place on that night. As well as that Maggie, Trendy Wendy and Sally Findlay are about, as usual, to play the tunes you all love. From henceforth, the Claremont Bar will, by popular demand have two male only nights per month, being the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month. The ever popular quiz night, now in its third year, runs every Wednesday night at the pub. Cafe Habana have been having some really good nights out at the moment. What with the Karaoke on Easter Sunday with Wee Jo (more of that please!) and what looks like a regular venue for the Gay.com meetings. And still they have the drink promo's on hand for your pre-clubbing needs! Planet Out have Trendy Wendy every other Monday. She's back on the 14th May. Nigel still has his quiz night on a Tuesday, with a cash jackpot and lots of other prizes and drinks promos on. Well done to The Bucaneers for winning (again) the Jackpot a few weeks back. I also hear that Lou is planning Bingo on a Wednesday! Lou's Bingos has a certain ring to it don't you think??? CC Blooms is getting ready for its 7th Birthday bash in July. With a surprise cabaret guest and the chance of Lily Savage appearing it should be fun. More details as I get them. Salsa classes are also being held in the Basement Bar as from May 4th, so now you can sashay and merengue to your Ricky Martin like he does! Kirsty is back every last Wednesday of the month with her fave songs and new to CC's is Lauren on Wednesday 9th May. She is a very talented young girl with a great voice and a personality to match. Ice Breakers is on every second Wednesday so you can meet new friends. Q Bar on Leith Street still have the happy hour between 4pm and 7pm every day of the week and it's getting to become a busy gay-friendly pre-club bar now. Pop in and try it, always nice to try somewhere different!! Colin from the Newtown Bar has asked me to remind you that women are, and always have been, welcome in the bar, along with everyone else fot that matter. On June 22nd they are having a pre-Pride party and with the Disco downstairs at weekends and drinks promo's on between 5pm - 9pm, why not pop in and say hello to Colin and the boys? Tackno is back this Sunday (29th April) with Tackno To Watch Girls By! Expect Andy Williams and Dean Martin and all the Hi-Fidelity Sounds that Trendy Wendy can find. Joined by guest DJ Fred Deakin of Going Places this looks to be a good night. Dale and Craig are back in May with more Lush! madness. Still going strong and still having those fab drink promos. I had a spy there for me at the last one and told me that people were going mad to the tunes! Must get there one night! Remember if you have any news or gossip, just email me at the address below and I'll get back to you! See you all later, Ali niniev@yahoo.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- Scottish Media Monitor ====================== Garry Otton Drives a Stake Through the Heart of Section 2A Porn Again! The Scottish Mail screamed: "Nurse who surfed Net for gay porn is back on duty". He was caught "even taking part in homosexual Internet 'chatrooms". Now I'd find it hard to find any gay man who hadn't done such a thing, let alone a male nurse! And with gays the backbone of the caring industry, I would politely suggest the Scottish Mail puts up and shuts up! The married father was caught amusing himself whilst supervising a psychiatric ward. Its his timing I question, not his morals. The Scottish Mail begged to differ and was astonished his licence wasn't revoked. I imagine The Scotsman's Linda Watson-Brown would have cheered the hundreds of protesters from various churches who sent 283 written objections and stormed a council meeting to stop Margaret McCracken from opening a sex shop in Ayr. Despite assurances that goods requiring a licence would be kept at the back, no entry would be given to anyone under 21 and the windows - as required by law - would be completely blacked out, the Licensing Board refused to give Ms McCracken a licence. One tearful woman claimed her son had become addicted to pornography, changing and distorting his personality until he had become "sinful". A minister advised that sex was God's gift to loving couples and allowed them to express their love in a caring way within marriage. An elderly lady, describing herself as a born-again Christian lectured the Board for five minutes on the state of their "immortal souls" before promising them: "I'll pray for you. I'll pray that you'll be saved from this evil". Linda Watson-Brown, who regularly occupies a choice site on The Scotsman's opinion page holds dear, privileged, censorious views that cut easily across human liberties and valid forms of sexual expression. The frumpish anti-porn campaigner admits: "I don't have a problem with censorship..." Advertising the controversial Scottish Women Against Pornography website Watson-Brown begs: "Can I really justify writing about this again? Too damn right I can". (Sound of more Scotsman readers jumping ship...)! And if you find it hard to make your voices heard or if you have any information "about the tentacles the sex industry has into other areas, let me know. I am still receiving letters about last year's WH Smith campaign- maybe it's time for another", she adds excitedly. "If you mail details to me (lwbrown@scotsman.com), I will compile an information sheet for readers who want to know just what their magazine company is producing besides recipes..." With her usual crusading zeal, Watson-Brown insists, "many Scotsman readers are extremely nice, and I have evidence to prove it". (She should read the e-mails sent to the Scottish Media Monitor)! "They are also jolly good at taking up some of the many crusades which get suggested in this page... In the past week, I have had letters telling me that a major car manufacturer has defended the use of naked women on its calendars as 'a bit of fun to brighten up the day... And WH Smith has still not replied to more than one angry complainant asking how our favourite porn-peddler is allowed to get away with sponsoring so many education events and children's competitions. This, I'm sorry to say, is par for the course. Don't give up, and keep me informed. Good luck!" She's absolutely barking! You! Off my planet! On Mothers' Day she wrote: "Those in their 'better years' will discover that they live in a world where young men rape old women as a matter of course". And advised: "If the parents... really want to protect their children, they - like many others - could start by throwing away the Britney Spears CDs..." And, in the bottomless pit of Linda Watson-Brown's don't-do-this and don't-do-thats was a sexy movie starring Bridget Jones. Apparently, according to her, your money would be better spent on "a couple of Jane Austen originals and a big bar of chocolate". Rattling collecting cans during Comic Relief soon had our priggish porn-seeker lengthening her skirt. Watson-Brown was "alarmed" by "very young women in our city centres wandering along in schoolgirl and nurses' uniforms, adorned with suspenders and stockings, shaking collecting tins and asking complete strangers for money... It is a disgrace" she sniffed. After the clause had breathed its last, The Scotsman found a new friend, and called on PR boss Jack 'Keep the Clause' Irvine to lecture Sophie Wessex on PR and her "fundamental mistakes". Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the same Mr Irvine that organised a press conference to announce a string of famous backers that well... didn't! And ran a GBP2million campaign promising us to keep the clause? Think about it. Martin Clarke's passion for Section 28 as former editor of the Daily Record is, of course, legendary. He huffed: "As the long awaited replacement for Section 28, the Scottish Executive unveils new 'non-judgmental' sex education guidelines which put every relationship on an equal moral footing and suggest only that some groups, such as churches, still think marriage is important. Which is rather like telling kids some people still think smashing up a bus shelter is a bit off". I only hope his wife finds him more interesting between the sheets than I do! Whatever this Scottish Mail/Scotsman columnist is: He's no writer! His clumsy rendering of a soap based around Holyrood is grim, unimaginative and humourless. Absolute fanny in other words! But should we expect flair, imagination and inspiration from someone who depends so much on the reassuring structures of religious dogma? At over a hundred years old, no one should be surprised to find the Daily Record with senile dementia, seemingly forgetting the part it played in the Section 28 debacle. "Opposition from the churches and sections of the public has damaged the Executive. So they have been very careful in the framing of the new guidelines". No, the Daily Record is not the disgusting tabloid it was under the hated Martin Clarke but it still has a long way to go. They need to take a moment to look at their watches! It is now the 21st Century guys! And still you ban ads from lesbian, gay, bisexual and people of transgender. The Channel Four documentary, Witness (Vatican Man) profiling Cardinal Winning was so profoundly dishonest I wondered how on Earth it managed to get aired. Much was made of the fact the Catholic voice was not being heard, which left me wondering if I'd slept through the Section 28 debacle. The focal point for gay issues centred round the 'marriage' of two gay women. Despite this not being the preferred model of most gays, much of the moral stance of Catholic dogma swirled around this gay couple. The documentary showed the 'serious' concerns of the religionists against a backdrop of drag queens and gays- complete with devil's horns- dancing at Manchester's Mardi Gras. Maybe I should pull a director and get us some time on Scottish TV? I recommend interviewing Tim Hopkins about the role of the Catholic Church in the repeal of Section 28 against a backdrop of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland? As you read this, preparations are being made to sail two tall ships into Greenock, fly astronaut Don Lind over from the USA and some young dancers from Utah. Big deal, you say! This follows the appointment of a husband and wife team from Arizona to launch a charm offensive across Scotland to increase the membership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The Mormons. Along with the Catholics they raised over $10million to support a measure that would outlaw the recognition of gay marriages in California. But they are not over here to simply recruit, you understand. Oh no, nothing so vulgar. They will be forging links with local groups and councils, cleaning up playgrounds and painting community centres. With a record 300,000 increase in membership last year, money shouldn't be too much of a problem for them. So it was then, with some suspicion, I read Ann Gloag's PR offensive in The Scotsman and The Herald and surprise, surprise, the Scottish Daily Mail. Let me remind you who this lady is. Despite a rise in homophobic harassment, bullying and violence never before witnessed in Scotland, she helped her brother, Brian Souter bankroll the Keep the Clause campaign, covering Scotland in homophobic posters. Her cruel and ruthless business methods are already well documented. Her own son, a sensitive lad by all accounts, committed suicide at the age of 28. This PR exercise, (her PR man is none other than Jack "slobbering old queers" Irvine) was about the good work done by the Mercy Ships charity. Not about Ann Gloag, of course. Oh, no! Of course not! Behind the attention-seeking pictures of her lifting up sick babies and deformed children, this was the woman who swaddled 'innocent wee kiddies' in Keep the Clause propaganda and pushed them to the front of demos. The PR exercise on the good work of Ann Gloag had not only Scotland's broadsheets cooing, but Jill Main, standing in for Old Mother Burnie in the Daily Record, the wife of Herald editor, Colette Douglas Home in the Scottish Mail and even the Kirsty Wark Show! Oh, generous woman! Richer than the Queen by some estimates, she reached into her purse and pulled out a measly GBP4million for a new Mercy Ship. She wants you to raise the other GBP15million. Jim Beth's feature in The Scotsman followed Ms Gloag and her Versace suits, pearls and painted nails through Benin in Africa. Having twice travelled through darkest Malawi, home of some of the Souter/Gloag worldwide business interests, I know the mark religion has made in that part of Africa. The Texas-based Mercy Ships mission- with the former House of Lords adviser to ex-Tory PM John Major, Lord Ian McColl heading the charity in the UK and Gloag on the international board- it lists their service to God before everything else. Although surgeons on board do not perform operations on HIV patients, claiming it could accelerate their deaths, the charity does outreach work in communities by building clinics and centres for sexual health education. "The medics believe it is too easy to be sidelined by the AIDS problem. The virus has killed 20 million Africans in 18 years. Every year, the same number die from dirty water, bad sanitation, malaria and tuberculosis". Religionists! Who needs them! After best Bish Richard Holloway named Peter Tatchell, Tommy Sheridan and others as icons of Christ, The Scotsman cornered a militant religionist of no particular importance - a certain Dr Adrian Rogers of self-styled Family Focus group - for his opinion. Err... Why? The Record's arrogant and loathsome speechwriter for the First Minister, Tom Brown thinks this is why we can't take religion seriously anymore. "The gospels say JC kept some strange company- but a Trot and a gay show-off?" he scoffs. Homophobic? I was probably not alone in being slightly miffed at the Sunday Mail's handling of Radio One DJ, Scott Mill's 'coming out'. "Mills joins Elton John, Pet Shop Boys singer Neil Tennant, Boyzone star Stephen Gately and Michael Barrymore, who have all admitted being gay". So bloody what! A rather flushed 15-year-old lad wrote to the Daily Record's agony aunt, Old Mother Burnie: "I have been looking through men's magazines and masturbating. I know I will probably go to hell, but I can't help it. I am too embarrassed to confess. It's not the sort of thing you could ever tell a priest. My big cousin has told me that I will have seriously damaged myself... I wish I was dead". A joy rag or Joan? He wiped up with the latter! Oh, Adie, that was soooo yesterday! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Films ===== Malcom Epstein The ideal way to bring major drama to a story is to set it in the middle of a war with constant bombing and explosions surrounding you. Early July brings us the german Aimee and Jaguar (l5) set in Berlin in the war where Hitler knew when it came to an end he had to die. And he didn't care if the whole German nation died with him. Millions were homeless because an average of 440 planes nightly reduced houses to rubble. Most of those left standing had no gas, electricity or water. People queued in the streets for hours with their pails at the few water pumps. And the food shops were almost empty. Into this extraordinary atmosphere a housewife with four children, Lilly, whose soldier husband was mostly away on duty, meets the lesbian Felice - a Jewish woman hiding from the Gestapo. When Felice first kisses her on the lips Lilly pushes her away. Then she realizes it was enormously stimulating. As daytime raids start they cling together surrounded by blue-black walls of smoke towering above bright red flames. This is director and writer Max Farberbock's first feature film and making it in German will only give it a limited release. However, Billy Wilder's biggest hit comedy Some Like It Hot was based on a German film. So who knows how long it will take Hollywood to do their version. Meanwhile this one has deservedly won several awards. Moviemakers have quite a problem making a film from a widely read book as readers know every page so well and have strong feelings about what should be onscreen. Not having read it helped me in appreciating Captain Corelli's Mandolin from the novel by Louis De Bernieres. Set on the Greek island of Cephallonia in the Second World War it has Nicolas Cage as an Italian army officer in the occupying force attracted to local beauty Penelope Cruz who is engaged to fisherman Christian Bale. The islanders are initially hostile to these Italian invaders. But listening to them sing many operas in harmony breaks down their resistance. Then the German army arrives with murder and mayhem. The unnecessary savagery of war transforms the lives of Penelope and her doctor father, John Hurt. Most readers of the book won't be disappointed. The brilliant musical Fiddler On The Roof (U) is being released again after 30 years and anyone who hasn't seen it is in for a treat. Originally a long running stage show in New York and London it has Russian Jewish people leaving their homeland through persecution to sail to America. It is packed with memorable melodies and playing the record first is a good way of enjoying it more in the cinema. Lovers of nostalgia who haven't seen Mildred Pierce (PG) will be pleased to know it can be tracked down now and they will see why Joan Crawford won an academy award for it in l945. A rags to riches story you see Joan build a successful restaurant chain, but her teenage daughter gets involved with the wrong man and murder. Current Releases Broken Hearts Club (15) is an extremely unusual event in movie making - a gay romantic comedy made in Hollywood. John Mahoney, known to TV viewers as the cranky Martin Crane in Frasier, runs a restaurant in it with gay staff and the film covers their romantic adventures. A group of friends are shown having the idiosyncracies of any straight group - either looking for love or avoiding committing themselves to permanent relationships. Anyone viewing it who wears mascara should make sure it is the waterproof kind. In 1982, a very well made gay move called Making Love, from a prominent Hollywood studio, Twentieth Century Fox, was a flop despite having two of the most attractive guys of the period in the leads - Harry Hamlin and Michael Ontkean. You will find some very pleasant sights on two legs in Broken Hearts Club so you must see it. The Mexican (l5) has the electricity of Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts in the leads and a ludicrous plot about Brad being sent to Mexico to collect an antique gun for his devious employers. To make sure he returns with the gun they get tough guy James Ganolfini (known to many as Tony Soprano in TV's "The Sopranos") to kidnap Julia, his girlfriend. He turns out to be the most sensitive kidnapper in the history of movies as he also happens to be gay. To put up with the wandering storyline the Brad Pitt eyes are as captivating as ever and those sensuous lips are just as irresistible. Martin Powell Nationale 7 (Uneasy Rider) Dir: Jean-Pierre Sinapi (France) I thought the English title a mistake. There is no way this is a road movie in the conventional sense, although one of the characters does have aspirations to being a motorcyclist. In this he is somewhat frustrated by being confined to a wheelchair. The action is set in a home for the severely disabled, which is close to the N7 road - hence the French title. The main character reminded me physically of Ricky Tomlinson, who plays the father in the Royle Family. Take that character, put him in a wheelchair, give him a towering intellect and a vigorous sex drive. Put this together to make him far more grumpy and you've just about got it. How he goes about fulfilling his desires and the bizarre consequences which arise form the main part of this film. Add in a dim, gay, Algerian Islamic fan of Johnny Holyday who wants to become a catholic even though the priest informs him that god had his son Jesus nailed to a cross because he was homosexual and you have the makings of a riotously funny film. A bit of a roller coaster of a film it does take a long time to get going as we have to get to know the characters quite well, but once we reach the heights and start our descent it more than makes up for it with hilarious twists and turns in every direction as we head towards the end. However this is also a film with some serious points to make about the way disabled people are manipulated, their sexual needs, and the way the church use people for their own ends no matter what damage that causes. I have long believed that you don't have to be boring to make a serious point. This brilliant work shows the same applies to film. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Giveaway ======== French films with English subtitles may not be quite your thing, but Man Is A Woman, I can assure you, is rather different! Think of Cage aux Folles with a bit more subtlety and refinement. Starring Antoine de Caunes (yes, the Eurotrash man - who turn out to have a quite pleasant body) in the part of Simon, a gay Jewish man in Paris, the film tells the tale of his sham marriage to Rosalie, a devout Yiddish soprano (played by Elsa Zylberstein) following a bit of homophobic blackmail from his uncle. It's outrageous in parts, it's sad in parts, and the young Gad Elmaleh (who plays Rosalie's brother) has parts you'd like to see more of! Anyway, we've got five copies of the video to give away. As usual, first come, first served. Send your name and address to: Man Is A Woman Offer, ScotsGay, PO Box 666, Edinburgh. EH7 5YW. Man Is A Woman will be available from Virgin, HMV, Tower Records, Prowler Stores, Clone Zone and all good video stockists from 7th May. Justin Milne ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Arts ==== Martin Powell The X Factor Dance Company - Deception I was beginning to wonder if I was losing my liking for dance having seen so much recently that at best could be described as mediocre. I needn't have worried, I had indeed been seeing some pretty awful stuff and it was therefore a joy to see something that could in no way be described as mediocre. Enthralling, beautiful, and superb are the terms that spring more readily to mind. Choreographed and performed by Alan Greig and Rebekah Stokoe it starts with a newly married couple. So much dance seems to be forced and unnatural, but what better describes the relationships between lovers than dancing all over each other's bodies? The relationship clearly starts to break down with the man not finding all his needs met from the relationship. Although this is never explained in detail use of expressions such as "in the closet" certainly pointed this reviewer in a specific direction. As this develops the style of the dance changes and becomes increasingly frenetic and aggressive. All of this is accompanied with excellent music by Quee MacArthur which complements the dance well and neither overpowers nor leaves the dance missing something. There is text too which provides the right balance of storytelling and dance. An excellent evening. Preview Virtual Traverse Arts websites are becoming more common and important and like websites in all other areas they range from the utterly useless - which very often are the most expensively designed - to the very good and useful. The main problem is that without spending time looking at them there is no way of telling which category they will fall into. One which looks as though it could be interesting, although it is not yet up and running, is the Virtual Traverse Project. This has been in development for about a year and features a complete database of all 600 Traverse productions since 1963 with a selection of programme notes, images, and video clips. There is much else promised including a virtual tour and building guide. It's available from noon on 8 May 2001 at http://www.virtualtraverse.com/ - make up your own mind. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Aberdeen/Obar Dheadhain ======================= Months go by in this job when nothing newsworthy ever really occurs in Aberdeen, but this month there seems to be lots happening for a change. First of all, look out for a "new" venue appearing in the next few weeks. On Sunday 6th May, Lush will return, back in its original venue, DeNiro's on Union Street. The promotor of the event has informed me that there are already people pissed off with the scene as is (hmm, doesn't this sound familiar?!) and he wants to provide something different on a Sunday night. He tells me that the music will probably be on the commercial side early on in the evening, but towards the end of the night, things should be getting a little bit harder! The DJ will be none other than Elaine, although it is planned that other DJs will appear. Also look out for a foam party in the near future too. Doors open at 9pm, with drinks promotions and door tax is reasonably at GBP3/4. Watch this space, and look out for flyers nearer the time. The second event on the calendar, and less than a week later, is the Gayleidh, once more to be held at the Jarvis City Hotel on Market street. The event is being organised by Ab-Fab, the organisation formerly known as the Aberdeen University LGB Soc., and like previous events, hopefully it will be a success. The evening in question is Friday 11 May 2k1. There is to be a ceilidh band, a rock/pop act and an appearance by "Referendum". It looks as if it will be quite a good night, as plenty of people have already expressed interest in the event, including a busload of screaming Moravians - that should be interesting. Door tax will be GBP6, and GBP3 concession, which includes students, retired, temporarily retired, etc. Tickets can be ordered by calling Phace Scotland on 01224 587166. Please do make the effort to come along and support this gaylidh, as it's for a good cause. Representatives from Phace Scotland and Health Promotions will also be on hand. I actually managed to make it to Lashed last month, and although it was somewhat quieter than previous nights, it was still a storming night. This is also good for people who want to experience something different once a month, and also gives people a chance to enjoy clubbing without being packed in like sardines. Apologies must go to Emma, who has been sending me stuff asking me to mention her band, Bad Karma. I had meant to go along to a gig to hear them for myself, but alas it hasn't yet happened! Various people I have spoken to have heard the band and reckon they're pretty good, so keep an eye out when you're out and about. Hopefully next month I'll be able to get some details of gigs! Well, did you read the open letter to the gay scene last month? Finally someone has found the guts to take a stand and speak out on the matter. I don't really think I need make further comment, really. With this upsurge in queer activity in Aberdeen, we coud be onto something really good. I mean, come on, Aberdeen has a sizeable population, a fair proportion of which is LGBT, so why don't we make the effort to support the efforts of the few and make something good for the many. Go on, try it, you might enjoy yourselves. Gus gus@drink.demon.co.uk -------------------------------------------------------------- Dundee/Dun Deagh ================ Summer is in the air! And as if to herald its approach the lovely Hazell Dean paid a visit to our humble town. Yes good people, such was the success of the night that, lo and behold, 'Charlie'-publican, self-styled raconteur and philanthropist-was seen to enjoy himself! Yes...occasionally it does happen it seems! (ask Iain). For those of a more cultured nature, the Dundee Rep's Production of Shakespeare's "A Winters Tale" got off to a flying start with a packed house on opening night. There is the language thing to get around, however it's counterbalanced nicely with wit and humour that requires no translation other than a good chuckle. It's well worth a visit and if you say you know me and carry a copy of this glorious publication with you, then you'll get in for exactly the same price as anyone else! Speaking of prices, you've all been moaning that Liberty has modestly increased its door and cloakroom tariff. However, you must remember it's a commercial venture, which means that these things will happen eventually. If memory serves, it's been a while since the last increase of any kind, so just take it like a man or woman or transgendered person! Oh ,and don't forget that you also get free ticket for entry into the club on Sunday! Liberty Manager Gavin, is making the final adjustments to his list of events for this summer, so look out of the Return of the 'Foam Machine' and an cabaret evening with Dundee's florist extraordinaire Colin, who, even now is having his Glitter suit dry cleaned! The decorators have finally finished the revamp to the outside of Charlie's Bar, which I'm reliably told took so long because Iain kept demanding a touch up here and there! To the paint, you naughty people...I heard that! On the subject of naughty people, Dundee's own magnificent Seven have been seen letting it all hang out in 'Raffles' on a Saturday night. They are, as I'm sure you'll already know, Stevie 'the ledge', Kevin the 'Submariner', 'Cunnilingus' Con, 'Saloon door' Sandy, 'Sir' David, 'Proclaimer' Ralph, oh and some other dafty called Perry! They are always it seems, seen out with a 'bevy of beauties' and quite frankly one didn't know there were so many cross-dressers in Dundee! Brooklyn sees a ever increasing number of people these days and this is perhaps due to the nice decor or the pleasant staff or its location to Liberty? Nah, none of those-it's the very reasonable price list! So if you've not had a visit there yet, why not do your wallet a favour and pop in. Oh and remember if you say you know me you'll get the 'charged exactly the same as everyone else deal'! I left out the 'must have a copy of ScotsGay' with you because there seems to be something of a shortage of them! Oh silly me. I've gotten all mixed up! Hang on a mo' I'll check...right I'm 19...nah that's not right (and hasn't been for a while Perry!)...I'm tall, blond and sexy....nah that's not right (no blond hair and high heels only at weekends)...there's a shortage of Boyz and the Pink Paper'. How that is true! Could it be due to their publishers restricting copies to our venues because they don't advertise with them? Does seem a bit of a playground solution, perhaps a more financially attractive advertising tariff might address the situation better, as opposed to trying to indirectly apply pressure on them via their customers. As to the question, would one wish to purchase these publications in the light of their alleged primitive practises? I leave it to your own sensibilities, "you might well ask, but one couldn't possibly comment". The once in a while 'oh look at him' award goes this time to Liam for this 'Pimp Glasses' last seen in the film 'Boogie Nights'... so a big well done to him on his singular sense of fashion which I would chance upon you is all part of the rich tapestry and diversity of life! Ooh this is getting all a bit heavy for him I hear you say...don't worry its just a link to the next bit, see if you can catch it? 'Diversi-tay' is the new persona for Dundee's long established support group for Lesbians Gays, bisexuals and transgendered persons of ALL AGES, (so don't just think its for the teenagers!). To contact them you need only lift the phone (01382 20 26 20) Email ( or snail mail ( lgbt group, PO Box 53, Dundee dd1 3yg) and lookout for their leaflets at the usual places. Also Dundee has a new health officer for the gay community and you can catch a open letter from them, complete with a short questionnaire in liberty and other venues. Dundee has struggled for ages to foster a greater sense of community for its LGBT populous, and has been supported constantly with the co-operation of those venues so much of you frequent. Sadly however there is an element in Dundee that seeks to destroy any attempt to create a more 'community' based environment. They target anyone who can effect a change in the status Que by the circulation of scandalous lies about them or provoking others into actions which create general hostility. To the credit of those targeted by this element they have not returned those actions in kind and I salute them for their candour. This 'element' is fuelled, not by the any goal of providing the community with anything beneficial, and one is largely at a complete loss as to what motivates these sad people other than just that. Perhaps the sadness of their own lives can only be made bearable by the suffering of others, if this is indeed so then what a despicable life to lead! All the commercial sides of the Dundee scene are in full agreement towards providing all their patrons with value for money and foster a friendly approach directed at creating an greater sense of community for all, with their support of non-profit activities. If you doubt my words you need only talk to them directly, a failure the so called 'element' has made in abundance. What a nicer place Dundee can be if we only give it a chance! So don't listen to the gossip and the lies it's a waste of your night out! And give the commercial sections of 'our community'(you see I said it ...it didn't hurt too much did it?) a break, no ones prefect, which includes YOU TOO, so be more understanding or "I'll slap yer legs". Last lines goes to the 'Venerable' Alister, who has with him the very best wishes from those of us who know him, in his battle against cancer. Perry X perry@drink.demon.co.uk -------------------------------------------------------------------------- International News ================== by Rex Wockner GAY FOREIGNERS CAN MARRY THERE TOO AMSTERDAM -- It was probably the most important moment in the history of the worldwide struggle for gay equality. Four gay couples were legally married here on April 1st under the exact same laws heterosexuals use. It was a world first. Several nations have registered-partnership laws under which gay couples can obtain up to 99 percent of the rights and obligations of marriage. But only The Netherlands now lets gays simply marry. "All the other countries have marriages specially made for gay people," said Henk Krol, publisher of De Gay Krant magazine and the driving force behind the 16-year process that led to legalized marriage for same-sex couples. "What we have in The Netherlands is civil marriage open to everyone. That's the big difference. That is the news." Amid an international media frenzy, the weddings took place at City Hall as the law became effective at the stroke of midnight. Mayor Job Cohen officiated. As Cohen finished his opening remarks at 11.58pm, the audience in the City Council chambers began syncopated clapping as they waited for the room's clock to click over to Midnight. When it clicked, cheers erupted. The ceremonies themselves took about half an hour. Cohen stood where individuals stand to address the City Council. The four couples sat in the front row of the seats where the councilors sit. Cohen read the marriage vows once for each couple and they individually responded, "Yes." Each couple shook hands, kissed and signed documents which were then signed by the mayor. A reception followed in the City Council foyer and the couples departed in four brightly coloured Volkswagen Beetles for a party at a gay club. "The most important thing is that we love each other like everyone loves each other and gets married. There's no difference," groom Peter Wittebrood-Lemke told this reporter. "The whole world has to learn that love is between people and not only between a man and a woman." Asked how marriage fits together with gay men's reputation for non-monogamy, Wittebrood-Lemke said: "Real fidelity has nothing to do with monogamy. Real fidelity is something else, something in your soul, something that attaches you to each other. Monogamy can be a sort of contract if you choose it. But if you marry you don't have to choose monogamy. You have to choose for fidelity." His partner, Frank Wittebrood, added: "Maybe you've been told that homosexuals are not monogamous. I think we are more honest. A lot of heterosexuals are like homosexuals, but they do it in hiding. Homosexuals are more honest." Groom Ton Jansen, 63, married his partner of 36 years, Louis Rogmans, 72. "Marriage gives you all the rights that other married people have," he said. "Marriage is the most intimate bond two people can enter into." Former Labour Member of Parliament Mieke van der Burg, who fought hard for the marriage legislation, said the political process was arduous. "In the beginning, I did not believe it would pass," she said. "It was very difficult in my own political party and in the other parties. I had so many discussions with members of my own party and other parties. It was very difficult to give the arguments in favour of this." Krol echoed: "In the beginning I never thought it would be possible to open up marriage. I thought it would be possible to have an excellent registered partnership in The Netherlands - the best in the world - and that's what we've had since 1998. But to open up that institution that for a lot of people is so special, well, we always thought it was reasonable, but to convince everybody that this was indeed necessary was a hard job. Especially because in the beginning it was hard to convince the gay community. They said, 'That's something for heterosexuals.'" Asked to advise activists working for gay marriage in other nations, Krol said: "You have to discuss it over and over again with the politicians and let them think. Discuss it over and over again until they understand there's no reason not to allow it. People are against it not because they think negative about it but because they feel negative in their lower body. That's the only reason they are against it. Once they start to think, they find no reason to be against it. "The thing that finally got us over the hump was when we did a survey of the Dutch population proving that a large majority was in favour of gay marriage," Krol said. "Everyone in Parliament wants to do what the majority of the people want. That made the difference." University of Utrecht Prof. Rob Tielman said it also helped that "Dutch society is the most secular one in the Western world. This explains Dutch attitudes towards voluntary euthanasia, recreational drugs, sexual self-determination, the legal right to be nude in certain public places, mandatory sex education in all schools, the lowest percentage worldwide of abortions and unwanted pregnancies, the constitutional equal treatment of gays and lesbians, the recognition of gay and lesbian parenthood, etc.," he said. "The fact that same-sex couples can marry now in The Netherlands is not a miracle but the consequence of a long history of respect for human rights based upon the principle of the right of every human being to give meaning and shape to his or her own life as long as the rights of others to human self-determination are respected." One law change remains - which is expected to pass shortly - before same-sex marriages are identical to opposite-sex couplings. It will grant lesbian couples who give birth to babies automatic joint parental authority. At present, they have to petition a court for that authority. It may take some time before gay spouses will be able to adopt children from other nations. Not because The Netherlands has a problem with it, but because the Third World nations from which Dutch couples adopt children are presumably hostile to the idea. FOREIGNERS CAN MARRY IN THE NETHERLANDS Gay couples from other countries can get married in The Netherlands provided they have lived in The Netherlands for four months. The City of Amsterdam has said it believes that gay couples from the other 14 nations that are members of the European Union can come to Amsterdam and marry without establishing residency. Readers of De Gay Krant magazine are offering to assist gay couples from non-European Union nations in establishing a legal address in The Netherlands so they can get married here. "These foreigners have to prove that they are using the Amsterdam address for at least four months," Krol said. "During these months it is possible that the City Hall will ask them to come by. If this is asked, they have to show up within three weeks. " Anyone interested in this should E-mail h.krol@gaykrant.nl Evan Wolfson, director of the US Lambda Legal Defence and Education Fund's Marriage Project, says that what The Netherlands has done will reverberate across the planet. "Non-gay people throughout the world will see that the sky does not fall when same-sex couples are included in the protections -- and the public celebration - of civil marriage," he said. The nations that have special partnership laws that give registered gay couples many or nearly all rights of matrimony are Denmark (and Greenland), France, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and, in the US, the state of Vermont. A few other nations, including Canada and Hungary, grant gays many rights of marriage under common-law marriage statutes. Portugal's gay partnership law is expected to take effect later this year. AUSTRALIAN MEN TO MARRY IN AMSTERDAM Two Australian men who are living in Amsterdam will be married there then return home and present themselves to officials as husbands. "Basically, if we fill out any form that asks about our marital status we'll be ticking married," said Darren Reynoldson who will marry Thomas Lexmond. "When we [go home], it will be as two married people," Lexmond, who also has Dutch citizenship, told The Australian. "Darren will legally be my husband and we both want that acknowledged. It's not a political statement ... it's a practical issue of tax and insurance and things like that." The Australian Taxation Office was not amused. A spokeswoman told The Australian, "As far as we are concerned they would be treated as individuals." Courts may decide otherwise. Litigation is expected. GAY MARRIAGE BILL INTRODUCED IN SPAIN The opposition Socialists have introduced a bill in Spain's parliament to legalize gay marriage. Socialist parliamentary spokesman Javier Barrero said the 1978 Spanish constitution does not specify that one's spouse has to be of the opposite sex."[Marriage] is a right of everyone," he said. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTSGAY VOICE FOR PERSONALS ============================ (We regret that this service is only available within the UK) To reply to ScotsGay Voice Ads, phone 09068 556613 (calls charged at 60p per minute) and use the number at the end of the ad.
