But, even though that nice Christian Tony Blair is about to make any real criticism of superstition illegal, I'm not sure I can be bothered. You see, the world is divided into the good superstitionists and the bad ones. The good ones, like most Quakers, wouldn't hurt a fly. The bad ones, like the Taleban brand of Islam, do not value human life highly. Superstitions have not been kind to homosexuals. The stoning to death of gays decreed by Islamic law isn't terribly different to our treatment under various different flavours of Christianity. And the way in which both treat women is but a matter of degree. But, there are flavours of all superstitions that are pro gay and generally pro people. And even those who don't like homosexuals can usually give you a free drink and a sing song on a Sunday morning before the pubs open. In a multicultural society, we have to tolerate and encourage diversity. When it comes to faith, I defend the right of anybody to believe whatever they wish - no matter how nonsensical it may be. But, ultimately, it is the duty of the atheist to point out that superstition is a load of bollocks - very often a dangerous load of bollocks. Let's face it: would you like to live in a society where the shots were called by the Mullahs, the Rabbis, the Pope or the Wee Frees? Britain is probably one of the few post-superstitious societies in the world. Compare this with the USA where the vast majority profess a faith. Strangely, this gushing of religiosity doesn't prevent the US from being one of the most violent societies on the planet. Blair's new law is unlikely to lead to the reversal of the national trend to dismiss God(s) from our lives. Rather, it is a misguided attempt to engender respect for the minority who do Really Believe. Misguided indeed: People who talk to imaginary friends deserve our sympathy - not our respect. John Hein john@scotsgay.co.uk ------------------------------------------------------------------------ News ==== Scottish media accused of Sexual Fascism Garry Otton's new book accuses the Scottish media of conducting a campaign of vilification against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The scapegoating, demonising and witch-hunting of queers is, says Otton, a form of "sexual fascism". It is a view echoed by human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, who has written a Foreword to Otton's new book. The many examples of inflammatory, bigoted news reports documented and dissected in Sexual Fascism include the media's coverage of the murder of Michael Doran in Queens Park, Glasgow, the Dunblane massacre of primary schoolchildren by Thomas Hamilton (branded a gay paedophile), and the vociferous morality campaigns of 'PervertWatch_, 'SmutWatch_ and 'Name and Shame'. Otton's five-year research examining the treatment of sexuality in the Scottish media is presented in his new book, "Sexual Fascism" which will be launched in Edinburgh's Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Centre on Thursday, 25th October at 8pm. "A woman warned to remove a display of male dolls that were deemed too close together in her window; a spray to detect traces of sex". Garry Otton asks if there is another, more sinister side to Scotland's portrayal of sexuality by the media? Otton highlights moral campaigns led by the Church, accusing it of side-stepping spirituality on the road to political ambition - from the campaign to prevent a popular exhibition of erotica in Glasgow, to the campaign against the repeal of the notorious Clause 28 in Scotland. Otton believes the Church has exploited its special relationship with the media to ride roughshod over the human rights of one minority, while twisting and suppressing the diverse expression of sexuality in everyone else. In this respect, 'Sexual Fascism' is a landmark book, the first published reaction from the heart of the lesbian and gay community in Scotland in direct response to the homophobia of the Church and its media allies. Garry Otton has worked in the media since the eighties, illustrating and writing for teenage magazines. He now writes on sexual issues, including the popular 'Scottish Media Monitor', examining the treatment of sexuality in the media for ScotsGay magazine. In 1995 he became the first western journalist to interview homosexuals in Tibet. 'Sexual Fascism' is published by Ganymede Books in paperback and is priced GBP8.99. ISBN: 0-9541131-0-1. For further information call Garry Otton on 0771 88 99 777. Scottish Media Monitor http://www.scottishmediamonitor.com/ Tog suas am feile-beag! Over the years we've seen many specialist gay societies come and go, but 2001 sees the International Kilt Appreciation Society celebrate its tenth year. How many can beat that? History was initially made in May 1991 when a group with a like-minded kilt interest met after an appeal had been put out in the gay press. Thankfully, it met with a response from ten such guys, and so IKAS was founded. Right from the start Mervyn Tacy (photographed) became the society's honorary secretary and editor of its bi-monthly newsletter. There might have been many comings and going over the years with the other positions within the society, but he has stuck with the task in hand for all those years, meeting deadlines, crisis, the unexpected, etc. Many might feel strange that this society is based in England, but that is where its Editor lives. He is of mixed Scottish/Irish/English parentage, and has indeed worn the kilt since a very tender age. At the start he knew very little of the origins of the kilt and its history, but over those years he has certainly become an authority on the subject. To keep members in contact, the society produces its own newsletter bi-monthly. This isn't your normal odd sheet but usually runs to a full sixteen pages. Naturally a lot of research and work goes into producing such a product, but life is made quite easy by its members freely contributing articles, etc. Hopefully via this newsletter our aim is to promote the wearing of the kilt by gay men, and for friendships to form amongst such guys too. Many people wrongly think IKAS is purely a society for kilt wearers alone, but it more than caters for kilt admirers too (of which the society has quite a few). Unlike many other groups, IKAS is NOT run as a business but purely as a society. Its subscriptions purely cover its costs and nothing more. All positions within the society are 'honorary'. If any profit is made then the society even produces additional free newsletters for its members. Many questions are raised, but the main one is always 'What is worn beneath the kilt?' Well, IKAS can provide the answer 'Nothing - Everything is in working order', as indeed the society is. If you want to learn more on the particular topic of kilts, then why not join? Here's to the next ten years of swinging the kilt the IKAS way. Mervyn Tacy (See Listings for contact details) Bairn Power A new group is being formed to get funding to set up a LGBT centre of some sort in the Falkirk/Grangemouth area. This centre will, like others in Scotland, provide a safe haven for LGBT and a source of information, support and guidance for anyone who thinks they may be LGBT or are LGBT. The idea of a safe haven for LGBT in Falkirk was conceived years ago by Freda Brodie, the mother of a gay son who was a teenager at the time. Her idea grew as did her belief in the need for such a place to exist. "We know that Falkirk isn't a huge place, however, it has become more apparent that there is a gay community. A community which is currently travelling 50 mile round trips to allow them to be who they are. No doubt this is great for those that benefit from people travelling but not for those that have to pay for it. True, there are establishments in the town that claim to be, and advertise as, gay "friendly". There are not, as yet, any places that are truly gay." Transgender First For Pride Scotland Pride Scotland - the organisers of Scotland's annual Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender March and Festival have appointed a Transgendered Woman as its new Chairperson. Jaye Richards was elected Chair of Pride Scotland at a Pride Scotland Board Meeting. Ms. Richards is the first Transgendered person to head a Pride event anywhere in the UK. Commenting on her appointment Jaye Richards said 'I was delighted to be elected as the new Chair of Pride Scotland. In the current climate of inclusion Pride Scotland can be rightly proud of itself, not only in electing a woman as chair but also in electing a transgendered person as chair and I look forward to working with the Pride Scotland team to ensure that we are at the forefront of the campaign for LGBT equality in Scotland'. Gay Nomad Survivors Poetry Scotland is inviting submissions for a special gay issue of its magazine "Nomad". Submissions should be no more than 2500 words (Prose) and no more than 6 poems. Typewritten. One poem a page. Submissions are welcome from anyone with anything to write on the subject from whatever sexuality or simply from LGBT writers. Submissions should please include a stamped self-addressed envelope and be sent to: Gerry Loose, Managing Editor, Survivors' Poetry Scotland, 4C4 Templeton Business Centre, 62 Templeton Street, Glasgow. G40 1DA. Pubmaster Pubmaster, the massive national pub owning group, had a big surprise when they recently bought a job lot of Edinburgh pubs from Solitaire Leisure. Unfortunately, they'd bought the boozers on the basis of their barrellage without bothering to view them first. Included in their pig in a poke purchase were three popular gay pubs: The Claremont, The New Town and Cafe Habana. Industry insiders told ScotsGay that there was consternation at Head Office when they discovered that they'd just made a major investment in "pretended family" pubs when their image is geared more to "family" pubs! But the gay pubs have proved to be one of the better parts of the purchase. Two of the straight pubs are renowned for their violence and, we understand, when a suit from Pubmaster turned up to inspect one of them, he was escorted from the premises with baseball bats! According to Robin at the Claremont, "As far as we're concerned, this is a change for the better. Promotions will be more readily available and the general level of service and attention from Pubmaster is much better than from the previous owners". "Assume Nothing" - A Bisexuality Awareness Day The Glasgow LGBT Centre and Bi Glasgow invite organisations which aim to be LGBT-inclusive to attend this one-day workshop at the Centre, which aims to raise awareness about bisexuality through creative, fun and exploratory exercises in a safe environment. Bi Awareness packs will be given to those attending to take back to their organisations for further training and awareness purposes. GBP12 per person. Spaces limited, so book soon. Contact the Glasgow LGBT Centre administrator on 0141-221 7203. Stirling There have been reports that Central Scotland police have been using "pretty policemen" to lure cruising men around Sheriffmuir and then giving them verbal abuse and in some cases summoning cars to take them to the local police station. Are there any STDs which lesbian and bisexual women should be particularly worried about? Do we need smear tests? Women in the west of Scotland benefit from the various projects at the Sandyford Initiative (see listings), but elsewhere there is a lack of information. There are a number of interesting online resources though. There's a shortage of UK-based information, but that doesn't really matter on the web! Lesbian Wellness (http://www.lesbianwellness. com/) aims to empower " lesbians to play an active and informed role in their own well-being through a more complete understanding of their personal wellness issues" and includes information on coming out, to yourself and others, cancer, HIV/AIDS and queer bashing. The US-based National Women's Health Information Center (http://www.4woman.gov/) is a huge resource fill on information on every imaginable aspect of women's health in general. A good selection of lesbian-specific material includes a Lesbian Health FAQ (http://www.4woman.gov/faq/ Lesbian.htm), which answers most of the questions I asked earlier. All the articles have links to more information and relevant organisations. Women's Health Interactive (http://www.womens-health.com/) is a warm, fuzzy, New Age Earth Mother of a site "Empowering Women Through Knowledge and Action" where you can "nurture your knowledge". It seems to be very fond of trying to set cookies, which gives me privacy concerns, especially if I was looking at the pages on STDs, mental health and other sensitive topics. I couldn't find any mention of the word "lesbian" in the index (and there's no obvious search facility) but it seemed to have a lot of information on women's health in general, all in that nice, empowering language. I love the name Estronaut (http://www.estronaut.com/). "Boldly exploring women's health", this site doesn't bother with fluffy language and euphemisms. "Sex" is what it says at the top of the menu but attempts to find lesbian-specific information were greeted with "The requested URL /cgi-bin/ search/search.pl was not found on this server." Shame. Getting down to the nitty gritty, the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Community Services Center provides an excellent, short Lesbian Safer Sex Guide (http://www.safersex.org/ women/lesbianss.html) and the extremely tasteful pictures are enough to make you go out and practice what it preaches. It assesses the comparative safety of various activities, emphasising the often-overlooked risks of bleeding gums and small cuts. Planned Parenthood also have a guide to lesbian safer sex (http://www.plannedparenthood.org/sti-safesex/lesbian.html) but without the interesting pictures! It, too, provides an assessment of the relative risks of different activities, and also points out when women are at greater risk at various times in their lives. Their "two basic rules" are worth repeating: "_ Keep your partner's body fluids out of your vagina, anus and mouth. _ Don't touch sores that are caused by sexually transmitted infections." You should bookmark these two pages and refer to them frequently. Finally, the Wellness: Health Care Information Resources provides an excellent list of Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Health links (http://www- hsl.mcmaster.ca/tomflem/gay.html) which will give you a head start in taking responsibility for your own health. Have fun and play safe! Novice Brother Bimbo del Doppio Senso, O.P.I. http://www.thesisters.org.uk/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- Glaschu/Glasgow =============== Arse bandit with attitude! HIYA SCUMBAGZ!!! Oh well - another weekend of boozing and shagging at the Goldilocks fuckpad comes to an end, so I'd better get Scotland's most widely read scene round-up sent off to my Small Bald Ginger Editor cos he's been on the phone whining about me being late as usual (No respect for us celebs eh?) As usual, I'll start off with this month's dates for the various club nights for the brain dead disco dollies who can't cope with reading any more than two paragraphs without a dictionary. The BEDLAM Goth night goes ahead on Saturday the 27th of October up at the Queen Margaret Union at Hillhead from 8pm to 2am. Tickets are the usual 3 quid from Osiris and Missing Records, or on the door. The next date for FRUITFLY will be on Saturday the 17th of November, and tickets are 8 pounds for members and 12 quid for the peasants. Remember to check out the pre-club in SOBA where you might be lucky enough to get a discount ticket for FRUITFLY. Not sure who the DJs are for November, so watch out for the flyers. Another 2 clubnights to watch out for are FOOT THERAPY and TRAXX. FOOT THERAPY is a monthly clubnight held in ALASKA on Bath Street, and the next date is Friday the 2nd of November. Tickets are 10 quid on the door, and it's open from 11 'til 3. There are two separate rooms - one playing the predictable "house" and the other playing a load of other stuff. The TRAXX clubnight is held on the second Friday of every month at the Arches, and the next date is the 9th of November. Tickets are GBP8 for members and GBP10 for guests and there are various guest DJs from time to time. No doubt TRAXX and FOOT THERAPY will be a welcome change from the other clubnights currently playing Chicago House, Hard House, Up-For-It House and Pumping House as TRAXX are offering Global House, and FOOT THERAPY specialises in Quality House. You lucky little club bunnies are soooo spoiled for choice these days!! Oops - not quite finished!! Here's another Press Release I almost forgot - Don't forget MELTING POT which is held on the 3rd Saturday of every month at the Riverside Club in Fox Street, with the next date being 17th of November. Tickets are a tenner and the music policy is "a fusion of disco and house" so you might get a bit of Kylie thrown in if you're lucky (lucky, lucky, lucky - you should be sooo fucking lucky!!) And finally (please let this be the last!) AURALL is back after a gap of 5 months. The first of 3 Aurall clubnights were held recently in SOBA, and if AURALL actually bothered to give me more than 5 days notice in their last press release, I might have been able to include it in last month's issue!! Music is on 2 floors, including "the deeper, darker sounds of house" and tickets are GBP6. The REVOLVER BAR continues to go from strength to strength, and the remaining screamy trash seem to have realised it's not their sort of place, leaving the rest of the scene in peace and quiet. The new pinball machine has finally been installed, and another recent arrival is the baked tattie machine, giving further additions to the expanding menu. The second of the Revolver theme nights went ahead recently with the sportswear night, which was well attended. Brendan and Jon have other nights planned for the future, so watch out for the posters. As you are probably aware, The Revolver have various things planned during the Glasgay festival, and will be licenced till 1am from Friday 26th of October to Sunday 4th of November. Other events to look out for are a PA by Hazel O'Connor on Sunday 18th of November, and the Halloween Party. The theme of this is "Dead Popstars" or Popstars whose careers are dead, so dress up and come along as your favourite corpse! Interesting article by the editor of Boyz in a recent edition. He mentioned that at least the LGBT community wouldn't be blamed for the terrorist events in New York. Wrong I'm afraid - only a few days after the bombing, Reverend Pat Robertson was on national US TV claiming that the bombings were God's revenge for the adulterers, pro abortionists and of course the LBGT community. Exactly how does Bush justify bombing innocent Afghans in his crusade against religious fundamentalists while allowing people like Robertson airtime? And still the USA wonders why so much of the world despises and ridicules them. Here's a piece of gossip for all the disco bunnies: I've been told that approaches have been made to Pride Scotland, offering to run next year's celebration as a Mardi Gras event. The march would still be organised locally, but the entertainment would be supplied by Mardi Gras. This would mean some really big acts being brought up for the event, and you actually now have the possibility of STEPS, Kylie or some other big name gay icons appearing on stage. This would put Pride Scotland firmly on the map, with large numbers of English fairies heading north for the event. It's all still unconfirmed, but if everything works out - remember you heard it from Goldilocks first!! And so we move on to the Pub and Club Awards which you all know and love. These were originally devised by myself, and have been copied by other rarely visited websites lacking the ability to produce their own work. Yet again, the Revolver has just been pipped by The Waterloo by only 2 votes for the Best Pub Award, with The Waterloo getting 29% and The Revolver 27%. Best Club Night was Cube on 47% and Best Club was Benetts on 64%. Much as you all obviously love the Waterloo, and the standard of service - nobody ever seems to vote for any of Jo's employees in the Prettiest Bar Staff, and once again The Candle Bar is way out in front with 9% of the votes! As usual, The Waterloo gets first place for Best Service on 29%, but the Revolver comes a very close second on 26%. Biggest Dump Award goes to Delmonicas as usual - way out in front with 29% of the votes and Sadies in second place with 19%. If you haven't already bought your tickets for the Switchboard / GLGBT Centre Ceilidh on the 3rd of November, then hurry up as it will surely sell out fast. Due to the popularity of the event, it will now be held in the St Andrews Hall, in St Andrews Square which has a much larger capacity than the Trades Hall. Music will be from the ever popular Macapella band, and the GBP12 tickets include entry to Bennets or The Poo afterwards. I suppose it's expecting too much for some of you lot to make the effort and dress up properly, but no doubt many others including myself and Mrs Goldilocks will show you how to turn yourselves out properly. There have been more improvements over at Centurion, with the steamroom having been recently refurbished, and now producing way more steam than in the past. The private rest rooms are now completely finished, and other parts of the club have been redecorated. More video monitors and a new sound system have also been installed, and I believe that the darkroom has also had a few changes, although I've not been in myself (being a respectable married man). The recent Fantasy and Fetish Night was very busy, and it is planned to hold more in the future - next time you will be able to book a locker in advance, as there were so many in last time that some customers had to wait for a free locker! One final question for Centurion - why does poor Richard keep getting slagged, even getting called a slapper in the latest newsletter? The poor guy can't help it if he gets way more shags than the rest of the staff. Jealousy probably... SNIPPETS AND STUFF That very nice Mr Kerr from Switchboard has asked me to tell you all that they are now operating from 7 to 10 pm seven days a week. Switchboard will also be launching a drive for more volunteers shortly, so if you feel you have the right attitude, please get in touch on 0141-332 8372. >>I've also been asked to remind you of the QUEST charity auction in aid of Milestone House HIV hospice at 3pm in the Strathclyde Chaplaincy Centre in John Street. >> Eddy Steele also asks me to pass on thanks to The Revolver Bar who recently hosted the GLGBT Centre volunteers' night out, and also supplied a buffet. The Centre is always on the lookout for volunteers, so give them a call if you want to help. And finally. I was in the GLGBTC recently, and couldn't help but notice the number of kids that were in the place with their obviously straight parents. Clearly the parents weren't too worried that their kids might see a same sex couple kissing, which makes the obnoxious homophobic regime at Sadie Frosts seem increasingly ridiculous, with their no kissing rule being enforced because "there are kids in during the day". Remember, this is a bar that claims to be a gay venue, is partly gay owned, has a bisexual manager, grabs as much of the Pink Pound as it can get, yet still feels it has the right to impose homophobic discriminatory policies for fear of losing money from its straight customers. Thankfully, since the last letter of complaint we published, I have had more of you telling me that you refuse to spend money in the place, particularly the lesbians who are prepared to make a stand on principle, unlike Glasgow gay men who are utterly spineless and will put up with any old shit... Well, that's it for this month. Complaints, death threats and smutty e-mail to the usual address. Happy shagging, Goldilocks E-mail:- goldilocks@btclick.com The Glasgow Gay and Lesbian Website: http://www.gay-glasgow.co.uk / -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dun Eideann/Edinburgh ===================== Christmas is heading dangerously close, and now's the time to activate contingency plans to ensure that we don't stay that way for the next two months at least. Christmas without at least one decent pressie can be a very disappointing time. Having visited CC Blooms during the last month, it's clear that they are still insistent on doing absolutely nothing new to get your business, the staff still haven't been on any customer service training, and the DJs still haven't discovered any music actually made this century! The New Town Bar has, by all accounts, been successful in bringing in a more clubby and younger crowd with their refit of their downstairs space. I will be checking this out this month, so check back for more details. Readers of this column will already be aware that I don't promote clubs and bars which make no effort to get you in there, and use little or no imagination to ensure you come back. Being a Gay pub or club or putting the phrase 'Gay friendly' in your advertising simply isn't enough. We spend a lot of money in bars and clubs, breweries make a lot of money from the gay market, and we deserve quality entertainment, in a safe and clean environment. This includes not packing people into clubs like sardines, simply to make more money. Clubs and bars are given a capacity limit by the Council and Fire service for a reason; Our safety! If people have to queue to get into another room of a club, then it's probably safe to say that there are too many people in there in the first place. I urge you to vote with your feet, and not to reward these places (You know who you are!) with your custom. Planet Out, however, has a decent programme of events to attract your custom, with DJs Dale and Craig (Lush) bringing you commercial dance on the weekends, and Trendy Wendy with her unique brand of kitsch nonsense every second Monday. Some news regarding Club Java: Having recommended this venue heartily over the last few months, I am now having to back-peddle and thoroughly recommend that you avoid it like the plague! Gill, the manager of Club Java, whose management style and group of singularly friendly staff, who had, over the last 2 years, created a unique space and atmosphere, have left in protest at the plans to change the place completely and go for a more commercial, decidedly un gay-friendly crowd. Saturday Social may appear at another venue in the future, watch this space for details. UP! Had an extremely successful re-launch on Saturday 6th October, having spent the last 18 months as a Friday night club, it has now changed to the first Saturday of the month, with a pre-club party every month at Pivo cafe Bar. Discount passes are available from Pivo on the night, but as the bar ended up with a queue up the street on Saturday, you're advised to make sure you get there as early as you can to make sure you get one! The club was absolutely rammed, with the interesting addition of a bubble machine, adding to the atmosphere. The next UP! Night is on Saturday 3rd November. Mingin' Alan Joy's fantastic budget night out is still going great guns, and is well known as where the sexiest men and women in Edinburgh go to party, and at GBP6, you can't miss! Alan's other baby, of course, is JOY @ EGO which he gave birth to over 8 years ago with Maggie, is having a particularly busy period at the moment, and you're advised to get there early to ensure entry. Another club starting at EGO is the naughtily titled LUBE, with guest DJs such as Scott Pierce (Ceratonin) and Brian Dempster (Mingin) This will be on monthly Sundays. Flyers are available in all reputable bars for more details. Don't forget about the Gay Switchboard Halloween Ball at The Assembly Rooms, a chance to see hundreds of men, and women, in kilts which shouldn't be missed. A lot of 'clubbers" tend to avoid this event, but having been myself, it's a really good laugh, and deserves your support. Gay Switchboard is an organisation constantly in need of financial support, and this is an opportunity for you to put something back in to the community and have a damn good night out in the process. See advertising for details of times and prices. With Christmas in mind, the beautifully designed Ocean Terminal shopping centre is now open, and is an altogether more sophisticated choice than Princes St, and it's easier to park. Conran's Kitchen is sure to attract the designery queens amongst us. See you there! Until next month, play safe and take care of each other. Tottytastic tottytastic@drink.demon.co.uk -------------------------------------------------------------------- Beyond Pride ============ A former Pride Scotland organiser talks about moving on. I used to be a big supporter of Pride. But after spending two years organising events, I started thinking differently. Pride is all about LGBT visibility. This makes a lot of people feel safe and comfortable. But it can also be very exclusive. LGBT visibility means being visibly queer. But not everyone looks very queer! Besides, being seen isn't the same as being accepted. If we want to live in a world more comfortable with diverse genders and sexualities, we have to do more than be proud. We also have to be inclusive. We should think about moving beyond LGBT. Gender and sexuality are not minority issues. It is obvious how women, queers and perverts are abused by our sexist, homophobic and sex-negative society. The privileges associated with being a man, straight and/or sexually 'normal' in our society are also obvious. But some things are not so obvious. Sexism damages men. Homophobia hurts people who label themselves straight. Living in a society which is so deeply uncomfortable with sex is bad even for those who think that they are normal. Many victims of queer bashing consider themselves straight. People don't get attacked for being queer, they get attacked for being perceived as queer (or not straight enough). Being repeatedly told that her wedding day is the most important day of her life doesn't encourage meaningful goals for a woman whoever she fancies. Children (and adults) punished for not acting like good boys and girls (or men and women) are damaged by the experience. It doesn't matter whether they consider themselves 'real men', 'real women' or transgendered (or all or none of the above). These issues certainly affect LGBT people. But they are not just LGBT issues. They affect everyone! At a recent public forum on Pride Scotland, I was pleasantly surprised. A number of people were questioning ideas about visibility and the assumption that bigger is better. But there was no space to discuss alternatives to Pride. I do not want to be part of an LGBT movement. I want to be part of a movement working for a society which is more comfortable with a diversity of genders and sexualities. I want to be part a movement which recognises how attitudes towards gender and sexuality are damaging to everyone. I want to be part of a movement which considers everyone to be a potential ally rather than an enemy. Pride is one day of the year. It is one event. It doesn't have to be the only one! I would love to see more people involved in creating different kinds of events. We could have gender fashion shows including a diversity of genders. We could do more to promote positive sex education for young people and adults. We could encourage everyone (LGBT or otherwise) to talk about their genders and their sexualities. If you want to join something established, you could check out Intercourse (see ScotsGay listings). Intercourse is a group "devoted to encouraging people to develop new ways of thinking and talking about sex and sexuality". There are infinite possibilities! Let's work together to find new ways to build a society more comfortable with gender and sexuality. Jamie Heckert, a person with no particular sexual orientation, is a PhD student, an organiser of Intercourse, a sex educator and rather good cook. Jamie can be reached at jamie@intercourse.org.uk ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bi Vocal ======== Bi the Way Bisexuality is like nothing else. Except maybe a Catholic who's a Rangers player or a Labour politician who believes in peace. Living a bisexual lifestyle singles you out in the gay world and the straight world. And even an old campaigner like me can sometimes wonder where he fits in. All in all I felt a little lost. Bored of going out and getting pissed - (in straight or in gay bars) - and too lazy to go out and get fit, I've, well... sat in-front of my computer screen and played on the Internet a lot. And actually I've had loads of fun. Gay and Bisexual men can have a ball on the World Wide Web. I can highly recommend outintheuk.com if you want to put down a listing and add a picture. With no adverts, it's quick and it has loads of guys from all over Scotland listed with pics. And the crap I've had from guys on the site because I'm Bi amounts to absolutely zero. I've also spent a fortune hanging around on the live chat site, gay.com in the Edinburgh1 room. This is quite simply the best chat room on the net, designed for those that don't want to just sit on their arse but get out and meet a lovely web pal. I've made a few friends here too, hello to EH6, Blond Boy, Bathgate, and the lovely Micha. Look to gay.com also for bisexual sites, SM sites, whatever you want. And through the web I found vibrant gay Spanish people, including someone very special, some gay Dr. Who fans, Bi political stuff, and even some fantastic anti-war material. The only problem left is my PC, which too often refuses to cooperate and crashes on me. It was whilst filling out the personal ad bit on outintheuk.com that I came across the question, "How OUT are you?" The possible answers ranged from something like not at all, a bit, moderately, or a total screamer. Now, I take it for granted that people who know me know that I'm bisexual. But then I was speaking to someone at work, where I'm the union representative, and it occurred to me that very few knew. Most of them had met my girlfriend socially (ex-girlfriend now) but few had met my boyfriend, (because I didn't have one). So the natural assumption is that Martin is 100% breeder. So, how do I come out to three entire offices at once? I am their union rep, I should be honest and open, but I was scratching my head. The answer of-course was to announce it in the local union newsletter. A brave move you might think... and now the issue that has gone to print. In the next ScotsGay I'll let you know if I'm still the union rep. Love, Martin Walker mgwuk@hotmail.com For my special friend, Iker. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dun-deagh/Dundee ================ There was much excitement and anticipation with news of a new gay night to be held every Saturday at Rattrays. The events flyers called it SHAME and featured fallen extrovert Michael Barrymore. The organisers promised cheap entry and vodka at a GBP1 a nip. With a bus laid on from Charlie's to the venue, promises of named DJs and a better alternative to established Libs, we all descended on the place. Unlucky patrons who arrived just before midnight had to queue for half an hour whilst everyone was asked their names and addresses (which must be a first for a gay nightclub). Drinks other than the vodka were just a few pence more than Liberty. The billed DJs Andy B and Dionne failed to play and the music choice and mixing of Ewan Melvile's trainee James failed to alleviate our disappointment. With the buffet of sausage rolls consumed, people started drifting off to parties and we headed back to Liberty where we encountered other people who had also found the new venue a SHAME. It is said that every cloud has a silver lining and Liberty seems to have had a much needed marketing boost. We have had the delight of a Shag Tag night and a Foam Party with a free Aftershock to get you in the mood. Doubt if that would have happened had John and Joe not had a dream. Other than the night of the ill-fated SHAME, the club has been busier since the departure of its mid week DJ. Ross Baby fairly attracts a following on Sundays with his zany anything goes format and I actually think I saw a smile on the club owner's face when close to a hundred turned up recently. The free tickets and special half price bottles may also be helping. Karaoke still starts the night on Wednesdays at Libs which means I and many others go to the straight clubs. Listening to crap singers and having paid three quid for the entry kills off a night like nothing else. Charlie and Ian have come back from their well earned holidays with a renewed vigour to give the gay and lesbian punters what they want. DJ Paula has made the place her own now and a good dance can be had for nothing (Liberty, are you listening?). The pub is much busier these days and looks the best I can remember. Charlie's promising a major refurbishment in the near future to go with the recently installed new front. Hopefully, the troublesome leak in the roof can finally be fixed at that time. It's been going so long, we now buy it anniversary cards. Brooklyn Bar behind Liberty is still gay owned, gay managed and gay friendly as the manager has repeatedly told our Editor in his many angry phone calls. It appears that ex staff have been stabbing Brian behind his back to organise a boycott. People stopped going when the same ex staff worked in the venue 'cause they were rude and terrible. Why they were not cleared out long ago is a mystery. The pub is fighting back now and has the music from Liberty wired up to it. The music is free now as the juke box was thrown out and neon signs etc have appeared. Will this entice us to use it? The changes have cost another ten pence on a pint so it probably won't. The much promised changes to our Health Board provided safe sex team seem to have run out of steam. In a back stabbing exercise which many a queen would be proud of, the Dundee Outreach Team at the Harm Reduction Centre were stripped of their 'gay men's health' portfolio by Ms Peacock (honest, that's her name) an unknown health worker. The condom and lube budget has been 'changed' by tens of thousands of pounds downwards and the co-ordinator is rarely seen on the scene and not so often in the cruising areas. However the Health Board assures gay men that their health is important. Which statement begs the question: What would they have done had it not been? The local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered switchboard (currently using the title Diversitay) appears now to be less independent with the chairman Andrew being put out of his chair. The Health Board has agreed to fund some of its costs and money and power are always linked. The name of Ms Peacock (honest, that's her name again) is linked to this change and we look forward to the benefits which the LGBT community are promised. But was not the Health Board funding the premises, phone bills, photocopying, etc., of the group before? Shafted X -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scottish Media Monitor ====================== Garry Otton Hating Religion - While He Still Can! The proper place to hear religion is sitting on a bench in a draughty Temperance Hall with bare, woodworm-infected floorboards and outside toilets. Not at the Labour Conference in Brighton! What was all that crap about 'children of Abraham' all about, eh? And why is the Home Secretary David Blunkett - supported by other members of the Christian Socialists Movement, (Blunkett, Brown and Blair are all members, by the way) - extending the laws governing incitement to hatred to just religionists? We are led to believe this is in response to planes piloted by Islamic militant extremists ploughing into the World Trade Centre towers. In truth, such measures were on the agenda long before that. This special treatment awarded to religionists ignores other vulnerable groups, undermines freedom of speech, stifles legitimate satire and criticism and extends the archaic blasphemy laws by stealth. I have a particular concern since, with its rigorous criticism of religion, my book 'Sexual Fascism', published by Ganymede Books, could fall foul of such a law. But where was the protection for gay people against militant religionists when the divisive and despicable campaign to retain Section 28 exploded in Scotland's face? Muslims have every right to demand protection against hate in law, but let's not forget that amongst these groups are those who want to promote discrimination and intolerance against women and homosexuals. Leaders of these groups were the first to join other militant religionists, nailing their colours against the blood-red letters of 'KEEP THE CLAUSE' and plastering their homophobic message across Scotland. It has been suggested that the Executive could take over a private member's Bill, like the one outlawing sectarianism by the Liberal Democrat MSP, Donald Gorrie. Gorrie, a Church elder, told listeners to the Lesley Riddoch programme on BBC Radio Scotland that homosexuals already had protection against incitement to hatred in law whilst people of religion had none. Anyone who witnessed the fury of religionists against the gay community during the 'Keep the Clause' campaign would know that is simply not the case. Homosexuals have no protection in law against incitement to hatred, something that has been taken full advantage of by certain sections of the media. The gay community are as much at war with militant religionists now as we ever have been! When the Equality Network asked Donald Gorrie if he could include protection for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender in his private member's Bill he replied with a form thanking them for their interest. All my efforts to challenge him on the programme went unheeded. Newspapers have refused either to print my letters or take up this story. In 1994, leading gay and human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell peacefully demonstrated outside a rally for Islamic fundamentalists who were advocating the murder of homosexuals. The placard he held announced that Iran was burning and beheading gays. (It is still true). Tatchell was charged under the Public Order Act. The prosecution alleged this was an incitement to hatred and caused offence to Muslims. Although the case did not stand the scrutiny of the court, it only demonstrates how easily such laws can be abused. Only three years ago, a more sensible amendment to extend the Crime and Disorder Bill 1998 to include hate crimes against religious and sexual minorities was thrown out. I respect homophobes right to free speech. But if homophobes in the established Church and their media cronies can have their say, so can I! By the time you are reading this, 'Sexual Fascism' will already be available across the counter. A familiar name floating above the Daily Mail's homophobic, Christian reportage is Steve Doughty, their Social Affairs Correspondent. "Millions of pounds of taxpayers' money" were apparently diverted away from "saving marriages". Doughty was one step ahead. "...This includes homosexual partners. In future, new rules say, any organisation that wants help from the Government must 'promote diversity' and serve 'commonly excluded groups'- coded language for gays and other sexual minorities". Never mind that as taxpayers, gays also contribute to the GBP5billion a year cost of supporting heterosexual marriages in crisis. Sociologist Patricia Morgan frowned: "A relationship is not the same as a marriage. The commitment to the long term is not there. A relationship has no structure, no plan, no commitment. There is in reality nothing there to support... In real life people want marriage and commitment and they are not being helped to get it". Doughty groaned that Lord Irvine had "left a loophole" which hinted "powerfully that new money will go to homosexual, transsexual or similar minority pressure groups". It was, of course, the same "loophole" that provided for the nastiest 'pressure group' of all: religious groups. Homophobia oozed from a later report by Isabel Oakeshott in the Scottish Daily Mail, which confirmed the mean-spirited and divisive nature of the paper she works for as a Scottish political reporter. Headed, the "twisted lessons on marriage", the piece sneered at the efforts of the Educational Institute of Scotland to protect both gay children and gay parents. She called on Peter Kearney, the Catholic media spokesman to explain how "this advice appears to promote a sort of pick-and-mix attitude to relationships. We believe marriage is the ideal and should be promoted. Teachers should be allowed to suggest that certain behaviour is wrong". Colin Hart from the militant Christian Institute, who make it their business to twist stories to promote their own particular brand of hatred explained how "if you go down this road, a gay teacher will be able to say sex education is far too heterosexual and demand that half of their time is spent on gay relationships". Part of the Scotsman stable, Edinburgh's Evening News found a "group of mothers"- it sounds more vulnerable than 'women' don't you think? - who are campaigning against cottaging, 'cos one of their 'partners', 38-year-old James Ferguson had been groped. (Hmmm)! "The dad said a group of five men behaved aggressively towards him, grabbed his bottom and described him as 'fresh meat'." (A heterosexual cottaging fantasy if ever I heard one)! There is a presumption of innocence because he's referred to as being a dad! Reporter Mark Smith doesn't explain why five men would act so aggressively to a man they wanted sex with. Or why one of them should have gone so far as to lay a hand on the bum of man who attempts a citizens' arrest after losing his temper and chasing one of them down the street! Using a line you, and many a local Sheriff has probably heard before, Ferguson begged: "I only nipped into the toilet after I got off the bus for a quick pee". Abandoning the 'Sacred Rules Of Good Cottaging', the dark spectre of furious wanking sessions performed solely for the benefit of under-fives unfolded as he gasped: "I take my children and my nephew to these toilets if they need a pee when they are out, and I'm sick of people like this hanging about". (So you do this often then, Mr Ferguson)? His partner, Julie Stevens rounded up a bunch of "concerned parents... all parents of children" from the local school and righteously declared: "If I had it my way we would be outside the toilets..." in London Road, Abbeyhill "with placards". (Saying what, for heaven's sake? BEST COCK SERVED HERE?) The Evening News saved them the trouble and advertised "nearby Calton Hill" and "New Calton Cemetery" as 'particular favourites' for gay sex. "Obviously, none of us have anything against gay men", Ms Stevens assured everyone, probably referring to Dale Winton.. What would it be like, say, if Edinburgh's Evening News printed, on its front page, a picture of a bomb being fitted to the wing of an US aircraft destined for Afghanistan? And written clearly on its side were the words: 'Hijack this, Pakis!' There would be, quite rightly, a public outcry. The message in fact read: "HIGH JACK THIS FAGS". The caption beneath simply read: "WAR MESSAGE: The sentiments are unmistakable..." What kind of a newspaper is it that allows such material to pass so flippantly?. "It is estimated there are up to half a million gay people in Scotland. They are seriously under-represented in the media - seldom seen, seldom heard and seldom written about other than in lurid terms". So says a press release from Nik McHugh, Public Relations Executive for Scottish Television introducing 'This Scotland', a programme about Scottish gays at an incredible pre-watershed time of 7.30pm. It seems they're all jumping on the bandwagon. BBC Radio Scotland - which should have had a gay programme long ago - asked me into the studio to respond to claims by Old Mother Burnie that she supported gays during the virulent and disgusting anti-gay 'Keep the Clause' campaign in the Daily Record. (Yeah, right you are, love)! It was reported that Record editor Peter Cox has taken the huff over the BBC's treatment of the tabloid and ordered his staff not to talk to them. Old Mother Burnie was pulled from reviewing the papers on Good Morning Scotland; a morning news programme interrupted every day with religious propaganda, so I'm still not sure if she'll treat us to an insight into exactly what she was supposed to have done to support gays during the terror of Martin Clarke's reign as editor of the Daily Record. Fervent anti-porn campaigner Linda Watson-Brown found something else to censor in The Scotsman - a broadsheet that is to newspaper readers what Leather For Less is for S&M masters. It was a documentary on a 16-year-old living with anorexia. "I watched television on Tuesday, and was horrified... shocked, appalled, sickened... It was obscene... I am sure there would be some who would get a great deal of pleasure from seeing a young women slip off her clothes to gaze at and caress her concave stomach, to see her in a swimsuit, to see her run her hands over the bones which stick out where flesh should be..." What is this woman on? Seeing something sinister in almost anything that could be twisted into a sexual context, she even got off on kiddie's clothes: "Is there any high-street retailer of children's clothes that isn't intent on turning little girls into every paedophile's dream with the current range of clothes on offer...? An assistant in one shop recently told me that her store chain had a nice line in thongs for customers. Their target market starts at age six". The Scottish Sun's columnist, former SNP deputy leader, Jim Sillars who once suggested homosexuals need to get the homosexual age of consent "as low as possible to ensure a continuous supply of sexual partners" is a key prosecution witness in a major fraud case involving Customs and Excise. As part of an inquiry into London-based computer equipment company Tigerflow, VAT inspectors are attempting to trace up to GBP5million after the company went into liquidation. Garry Otton's book SEXUAL FASCISM is published by Ganymede Books priced GBP8.99. The Scottish Media Monitor can be found at http://www.scottishmediamonitor.com/ Cut it out! * Gerald Warner in Scotland on Sunday on America's decline: "There are two nations... One is the old, stoic, pioneering America, with which George Bush intuitively identifies. It is church-going, hard-working, family-centred; its emblem is the picket-fence, its festival Thanksgiving Day. The other nation is the tinsel America of the likes of Barbra Streisand and Tom Hanks, with which Bill Clinton empathised. Politically correct, self-indulgent and self-regarding, it has feminised America... If George W Bush wants to destroy the enemy within and reclaim the American identity, a cruise missile strike against Hollywood would be a good beginning... The message of history is that America, if it rediscovers its moral values, can still be a potent power for good: the humble picket-fence has the potential to withstand the malignant forces to which the proud skyscrapers of Manhattan were forced to succumb". * Conservative. Catholic. Mother. Katie Grant in Scotland on Sunday: "Shock, horror, grief were exactly the words used ad nauseam over the week beginning August 30, 1997. Then, a 36-year-old blonde mother of two died in a car crash and Britain came to a halt as people indulged in what had, until then, been deemed American-style lamentations - sobbing, sentimental outpourings into books of condolence, mountains of cellophane-shrouded flowers, declarations that the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, affected them more deeply than the death of their own mother... We will need to abandon forever Dianaesque hysteria... if we are serious about being bold and resolute, the stiff upper lip must come back into fashion". * Muriel Gray in the Sunday Herald: "One famous, but powerless and insignificant woman, dies in a car crash. Thousands of innocent people die horribly in fire and buildings collapse and the world stands on the brink of world war three. One can see the obvious parallels". Go girl! * In another insufferable defence of religion by Katie Grant in The Scotsman: "But if humanity has failed in its challenge to worship God through a religion he could be proud of, it is not God's fault... Its original message was corrupted". * Richard Holloway in the Sunday Herald: "The lethal cocktail of political impotence and religious zeal has already bombed its way onto our television screens and into our newspapers". * Muriel Gray in the Sunday Herald: "Moving on swiftly, because I must. The need for speed is that this may be the last time I can legally write about the subject that skewers me on a spit, that keeps me awake, makes me fear for my own family and their future, and fills me with unfathomable grief for the present turmoil and uncertain future of our unique, complex and precious species. What else could it be but that ugly many-headed monster, religion?" * Anti-porn campaigner Linda Watson-Brown grumbling along Blackpool's pier in The Scotsman: "Once you've fought your way past the lap-dancing clubs and plastic penises, piles of horse dung and the complete absence of a clean public toilet in the entire place, the picture is complete". * Old Mother Burnie's advice to an employee worried about his boss in the Daily Record: "I mean, just because the man shares his meal with you and offers you a glass of wine, hardly means he's after your body". Oh, spoilsport! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Obar Dheadhain/Aberdeen ======================= Hello Everybody! Normal service resumes this month, although you would be forgiven for thinking it's still not Aberdeen - there's so much happening! Early October saw the launch of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Action Plan by the city council. Produced by a working group made up of various bods from the council and representatives from LGBT organisations and groups, the plan sets out various action points for the next two years in several key areas, covering education/training, communication, awareness, access to services, health, safety and support. The event was chaired by the Lord Provost Margaret Smith, and speeches were given by the working group chairwomen Councillor Kate Dean, Stonewall (Scotland) co-ordinator Ali Jarvis and community representative Andy Webb. The event was held in the Town House, which you may have noticed was flying the rainbow flag high above Union Street for the day. A brochure has been created that gives background information on the plan as well as detailing the actions the council plans to carry out over the next two years. These are available from the council by calling Aberdeen (01224) 522777. One result of the LGB&T Action Plan is the creation of the North East Scotland LGB&T Forum. It is hoped that the forum will become a central point for the LGB&T community in Aberdeen, allowing a place for people to say what they think is happening in the community and get involved in making Aberdeen a better place for us all. The first meeting of this forum has been organised for Tuesday 30th October, at 8pm in the Jarvis Hotel, Market Street. Remember, it's your chance to voice your concerns and actually get Aberdeen heading in the right direction, so it is important as many people from as diverse a range as possible attend. If we swirly wave even further back into the past, you may remember the launch of the Grampian Gay Men's Health Project at the beginning of September. The project, based in Justice Mill Lane, provides a safe and supportive environment in which various issues can be raised, along with providing services such as outreach to public sex environments, condom and lube distribution and will hold various health promotion events. The launch had a great turnout, and the party afterwards in Castro's seemed a big success. Ab-Fab - the Aberdeen LGB society - has had their first meeting of the new academic year, and a great success it was! A huge crowd turned out at the Illicit Still, filling the room upstairs. Most of us seemed to end up in Bar Castro's later that night which was laying on some cheap drink offers. There was also a good deal of interest in the elections for the society's new committee, which should be up and running by the time this article reaches Aberdeen. RGU-ers should not feel left out, Richard has stepped in as president of our society and will hopefully bring the same enthusiasm to the job as Kristjan did. There is some hope that stronger links between the two societies will form over the coming months, which can only lead to an all-round improvement for all the student community. Upcoming events at Bar Castro's include the draw to see who wins the 88 pints of Tennents on Wednesday the 24th October; various other prizes are also up for grabs. Wednesday the 31st is Halloween, so for a chance to win a big cash prize of one-hundred pounds come as anyone you like, as long as they are dead. Saturday the 3rd of November sees the return of Lynn Sangster, who will provide live music downstairs from 2pm onwards from her recently released debut album 'EagleAngel'. I missed the last time Lynn played, but have heard that it was really good so look forward to this opportunity of seeing her play again. There's nothing like a bit of live music, even if it doesn't contain screaming electric guitars and 12-foot zombies walking around the stage! Other news from Bar Castro's is that they have been successful in their bid for increased opening hours, so from Friday the 20th and every Friday and Saturday thereafter doors will be open to 3am. The best bit is door tariffs will remain the same, so it's like a whole hour for free! Also, Colin is looking for some new staff for the bar; if you happen to be a male lap dancer looking for employment in Aberdeen then you could finally have the job you want! I reckon there's a competition in the making there: amateur lap dancing nights! The LGB Switchboard has organised an "Out on the Green" event with cafe 52 (also known as cafe on the Green). The details have escaped me at the moment, but I think it was the first Sunday evening of each month. Best check first though with the Switchboard. The Lashed vs. Pussy Galores night went well, although you could easily tell who were the regulars from either club from the division in fashion sense! Anyway Gillian is taking a rest from Lashed for a while, but does promise that it will be back at some point. The Granite Sisters are holding the Women's Disco on Friday 26th of October at the East Neuk, where there will be a special appearance of the Dundee Women Drummers group Ellesbelles. The Belmont picture house is having a Rainbow Films season, where various gay and lesbian films will be shown every 2nd Sunday afternoon of the month. The next one will be 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' on 11th of November, sometime about 4pm. Exact details can be found from the cinema or its website at http://www.picturehouse-cinemas.co.uk/ And finally, could it be true that someone is thinking about opening a new gay venue in Aberdeen? We wait with bated breath to see if this is true or not. Chris chris@cutearse.co.uk ---------------------------------------------------------------------- International News from Rex Wockner =================================== Terrorist accusation at Egyptian gay trial The ongoing Cairo trial of 52 Egyptian men accused of engaging in gay sex took an unexpected turn on 10th Oct when prosecutors accused the lead defendant, Sherif Farhat, of being a member of the Islamic terrorist organization Jihad. Jihad, which has links with Osama bin Laden, waged a terrorist campaign against tourists and the Egyptian government in the 1990s. The 52 men are charged with committing immoral acts and/or forming a group that exploits Islam to propagate extremist ideas. Police say they were arrested in and around a gay club on May 11. They have remained jailed at Tora Prison since then. According to the International gay Muslim organization Al-Fatiha, prosecutors also inadvertently revealed that the prosecutions are a sham. "[The defendants' lawyers] pointed out that four of the defendants had given false names and addresses to the police, and the 'investigation reports' that were cooked later stated that the subjects (with the false names) had been under police surveillance for a while, at those false addresses," Al-Fatiha said. "These four defendants stated their real names and addresses in the courtroom, after which the prosecution asked that the names be changed on the pretext that these false names were really their aliases. However, the prosecution was unable to explain the matter of the false addresses that had allegedly been under surveillance." According to the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission, many of the defendants were not even at or near the gay club that was raided. "Out of the 52 defendants, 19 were arrested elsewhere," IGLHRC said. "Some of the other detainees were picked up by police for minor violations: one reportedly was a street vendor arrested for selling watches without a license at a teahouse, another was cleaning his motorcycle on the street without his ID, and still another was initially arrested for having a fight with an off-duty police officer. After their arrests, they were placed in the ranks of suspected 'homosexuals' by police eager to stimulate a scandal." Verdicts are expected to be handed down on 14th Nov. Since the trial is taking place in an emergency state security court, there is no possibility of appeal. The sentences could be as high as five years in prison. Book: Hitler was gay A new book by a respected German historian says Adolf Hitler was gay and hung out with a gay clique in Munich in his younger days, though proof that he engaged in gay sex is only circumstantial. Hitler's later persecution of homosexuals was an attempt to insulate himself against blackmail, according to "Hitler's Secret: The Double Life of a Dictator" by University of Bremen history professor Lothar Machtan. "We can say that Hitler had several homoerotic friendships up through the 1920s," Machtan told Die Welt newspaper. "Many of them would be described by people today as homosexual." Machtan says Hitler's later relationship with Eva Braun likely was only for show and probably was never consummated. Ernst Rohm, the gay leader of Hitler's Storm Troopers, tried to blackmail Hitler by threatening to reveal his sexuality, Machtan said. For that, Hitler had him killed, the book says. The book reportedly quotes several men and male prostitutes who claim to have had sex with Hitler. The quotes come from published accounts, service notes and police files. Canada wants to count gays Statistics Canada wants to count the nation's gays. The agency has launched a study in Ottawa, Calgary, Vancouver and Montreal to assess if the time is right to pop the question and to determine how to phrase it. "We're looking at the feasibility of asking questions about sexual orientation," Viviane Renaud, senior analyst for Statistics Canada, told the Globe and Mail. "We recognize it's a sensitive topic." Uruguay considers gay rights Uruguay's Chamber of Deputies will soon debate an amendment to the penal code that bans discrimination and moral, physical and psychological violence based on sexual orientation or sexual/gender identity. It was approved unanimously by the Constitution and Codes Commission and sent to the full chamber for a vote. Should it pass, it will advance to the Senate. The International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission urges activists worldwide to e-mail all 99 members of Uruguay's Chamber of Deputies, urging them to support the measure. For details, visit http://www.iglhrc.org/ Gays win South Africa adoption case South Africa's Johannesburg High Court has struck down laws that prevented gay couples from adopting children. The ruling came in a case launched by lesbian judge Anna-Marie de Vos who adopted two children six years ago and wanted her partner, Suzanne du Toit, to be able to adopt them also. The ruling will not take effect until it is confirmed by the Constitutional Court. Du Toit said that should be a formality. Trouble for Hero Parade The future of New Zealand's biggest annual gay-pride celebration, the Hero Parade, is in doubt after its chief executive moved to Australia leaving the organization up to $NZ100,000 in debt. Panamanian group finally registered After a three year legal battle, the New Men and Women Association of Panama has achieved legal registration. The gay organization had been denied official status by the Ministry of Government and Justice on the grounds that its aims were contrary to "morals and good habits." Ambassador's homosexuality a big deal in Romania The United States' new openly gay ambassador to Romania, Michael Guest, has been greeted in Bucharest with "homophobic hysteria". Romanian newspapers reported Guest's sexual orientation in banner headlines and the nationalist Union of the Romanian Hearth called his appointment an "affront to Romanian traditions," the newspaper said. Officially, the government warmly welcomed Guest. Romanian political leaders believe his particular areas of expertise will speed the nation's entry into the European Union and NATO. In Washington, Romania's ambassador to the US, Sorin Ducaru, told the Washington Times: "This was no surprise to the Romanian government. This is a non-issue. He is a highly respected diplomat, and we knew he would come with his partner. Knowing Ambassador Guest, I very much appreciate his character and his great professionalism." Tutu: You are what you are The Bible's determinations regarding "natural" and "unnatural" aren't worth much, according to former Anglican archbishop Desmond Tutu. Addressing a conference on homophobia in Cape Town, Tutu said: "I want to say sorry to you and all the others who have been made to suffer so horribly. We in the church have a great deal to answer for. "Sometimes the Bible says these things are unnatural. But, I ask, unnatural to whom? I support and firmly stand with those who say, 'We are as we are and don't want to apologize for that.'" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Films ===== by Malcolm Epstein FILMS TO KNOW ABOUT Gay teenagers who have ever regretted having an affair with an older guy will be interested in The Deep End (15). Tilda Swinton is an American housewife whose husband is a ship's captain away much of the time. Overhearing her 18 year old son Beau's phone conversations telling someone he can't see him anymore, after persistent calls she learns he owns a gay club and visits him requesting he leaves Beau alone. They live next to a lake and a couple of mornings later, about to take her morning swim, she finds the club owner's dead body next to the water. Dreading any publicity the incident could bring her son she takes the body away to be found elsewhere. It is found and days later a blackmailing continental voice phones her to say he has a video film of her son having sex with the dead man which will cost her thousands - or he will give it to the police. It kept me engrossed. Those of us who have ever had a sexual experience with the most attractive man on this planet who turns out to be totally without conscience will appreciate Women Talking Dirty (15). The title is misleading, but it is the title of the book on which it is based by Scottish author Isla Dewar. It is essential viewing to anyone not yet aware of James Purefoy's extraordinary magnetism. With Edinburgh as the backdrop we have Helena Bonham Carter as a single mother forming a once in a lifetime friendship with Gina McKee who had been married to gambler James who disappeared when threats to pay his gambling debts were approaching certain violence. Gina envies Helena's child as she never managed to conceive during her marriage. Helena has never met him and when James returns he deviously introduces himself to her in a pub under an assumed name and his irresistible appeal leads straight to the bedroom. When later realising he is Gina's husband and that she is now pregnant by him she dare not tell her best friend the truth. It is a constantly entertaining movie helped considerably by a shrewdly chosen supporting cast including Richard Wilson and Kenneth Cranham as a gay affair of long standing. This is the first production of Rocket Pictures set up by Elton John and his partner, David Furnish. It is only a matter of time before James Purefoy is snapped up by Hollywood. The Piano Teacher (18) is a bizarre French movie well worth your consideration. The leading man, Benoit Maginel, is a feast for the eyes, playing a music student at the Vienna Conservatory. Isabelle Huppert is possibly the most unusual piano teacher in the world as she lives with her dominating and often aggressive mother who seems to forbid her romantic interests. So she becomes a masochist. And her hobbies are going to sex shops where she watches the kind of movies that give her satisfaction. Her affair with young Mr Maginel is the most surprising you will ever see onscreen . Because they are so attractive you could be riveted to your seat. The fact that the plotline is farfetched is immaterial. Any career lady with a need for offbeat horizontal excitement is not likely to do it with her mother's ear forced against her locked bedroom door. You will only find it playing at a few art cinemas, but it is worth tracking down with cash in your expectant fingers. Wild about Harry (15) is a very clever movie with an imaginative script about an Irish TV chat show host and cook, Brendan Gleeson, whose life is in turmoil. His affairs have finally made his wife, Amanda Donahoe, serve him with divorce papers and his two children won't even speak to him. After drunken hoodlums beat him up late one night he ends up in hospital in a coma for a week. Waking up with amnesia he has no memory of anything that has happened since he was eighteen. Th family is convinced he is play acting to return to their good books. Well worth 91 minutes of your valuable time. Strictly Sinatra (15) has Scottish-Italian club crooner Ian Hart, who is obsessed with Frank Sinatra and only sings his songs, mixed up with local gangsters in the hope they will make him a star. It is written and directed by Peter Capaldi, who is a graduate from the Glasgow School of Art. Peter is certainly proving his versatility as he is currently acting in a hit comedy play "Feelgood" at London's Garrick Theatre. Where his movie slightly lacks impact is because although Ian Hart is a very competent actor he cannot sustain interest onscreen in close-up for the running time of a feature film. If James Purfroy, whom the camera is in love with, played the part it would have been a different story. Hollywood has to aim at the under 25 market as they are America's main cinemagoers and I can't decide how much younger than 25 The Animal (12) is aimed at. Small, wimpy Rob Schneider doesn't have what it takes to fulfil his life dream to be a cop until his luck changes. After being critically injured in a car accident he is rebuilt by a deranged scientist with animal organs. Energised by his new parts, he achieves instant fame as a supercop hero - that is until his animal instincts start taking over. Current Releases Amelie (15) is a completely different French film aimed at the romantics amongst us. Scripted and directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who had a big hit with "Delicatessen", it is the top grossing movie in France. Amelie grows up in a fantasy world, becoming a waitress in a Parisian cafe. She is dedicated to improving the lives of everyone around her. A critic has said: "If Paris is destroyed tomorrow and the recipe of true love lost, archaeologists could reconstruct both to perfection from just a reel of this film. In America's Sweetheart (12) Julia Roberts is the sister and devoted personal assistant to the beautiful superstar Catherine Zeta Jones. She and her estranged husband, John Cusack, have made highly successful pictures together but now live apart as a divorce is imminent. High powered publicist Billy Crystal persuades them to meet the press at a promotion weekend for their latest film and pretend they are still as in love as they always appeared to be on screen . But Catherine brings along her jealous Spanish lover which brings major drama. As Billy also wrote the script it will keep you very amused. Those of us who enjoy "American Pie", and here were millions, should like American Pie 2 (15). I am sympathetic with Hollywood studio moguls irritated having to pay gigantic fees to superstars who are now desperate to find subjects with unknown casts grateful to work that will attract vast audiences. The found it with "Scream" which brought two sequels and many imitations as people, apparently, loved watching high school girls being slashed with razors. Now there is a phase of young men at high school being humiliated in as many ways as possible. In "American Pie 2" the scriptwriter has a guy at a party who can't wait for the queue for the loo urinating from a balcony over someone who, conveniently, has just been told by his girlfriend to sit there with his eyes closed and his mouth open as she has a surprise for him. What ever I think of these films they are big box office. A Steven Spielberg film is usually special and none more so that A.I. Artificial Intelligence (12). That enchanting boy from "The Sixth Sense", Haley Joel Osment, now 12, is in a world of the distant future where he is the first robot made who can feel great love for his parents. But he is bullied by real children and his adventures are an adult fairy tale. Costing a fortune to make because of special effects that will amaze you, Master Osment is wonderful to watch if you have any paternal feelings. As I couldn't bear to see him suffer in any way, I needed my packet of tissues. Robert de Niro is an efficient safe cracker in The Score (15) who runs a Montreal jazz club for tax purposes and promises girlfriend Angela Basset he will give up crime after one last job. Seventy seven year old Marlon Brando is his reliable fence who persuades him the last big one should be Montreal's Custom House which is heavily guarded. Young thief Edward Norton is employed to work out a foolproof plan. As Robert and Edward don't get on, it is an explosive relationship. Those of us not around in the 40s , when Britain was at war, could be fascinated by Enigma (15). Based on a best selling novel by Robert Harris, it is set in the code-breaking station at Bletchley Park, north of London, where breaking the German codes considerably shortened the war. Dougray Scott, the best looking man ever to come out of Fife, is the leading code breaker. He will be remembered as the captivating villain in "Mission Impossible 2". That time of tension and trauma is brilliantly re-created by director Michael Apted. Sweet Smell of Success (PG) received such critical acclaim in 1957 for its hard-hitting factual black and white style that it has been revived. Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis were in their best looking years. Burt is a cynical newspaper columnist who frequently browbeats publicist Tony who has clients he desperately needs to keep appearing in the Lancaster column. It is not an action movie. It is for those of us who may be intrigued or appalled by an aspect of New York life that is often unpalatable. It helps if you are a poetry lover to appreciate Pandemonium (12) that covers the friendship 200 years ago of William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. John Hannah as Wordsworth was consumed with envy at how Linus Riche as Coleridge could so easily put inspiring sentences together. It was particularly galling as Coleridge was ruining his health as an opium addict. Directed in a beautiful style by Julien Temple it may only be fully appreciated by poetry lovers, but they are in for a rare treat. New Videos In James Franco they have found the ideal facsimile to star in James Dean (Mosaic Entertainment MMS 10145). He has the smouldering intensity of the 24 year old who brought his life to an horrific end in his racing car. Anyone who hasn't seen the fifties movie "Rebel Without a Cause" has missed out big time on one of the movie sensations. In fact tracking it down, plus "East of Eden", is essential before viewing this story of his life to know why the world was mad about James Dean. He only made three films - "Giant" was the third - but his personality has never been equalled since. As director John Waters has quite a reputation, and starred Divine in a few of his extravaganzas, his fans will like to know the outrageous Cecil B. Demented (Momentum SN48381) is now on video. Melanie Griffith is a temperamental film star specialising in four letter words who is kidnapped by an amateur production company who insist she stars in their film. Ricki Lake, of TV chat show fame, is there to see fair play and a lady happy to be called Mink Stole. Miss Griffith is often peppered with questions about having sex with Mel Gibson and lines like "How big is his dick?" -------------------------------------------------------------------- Freebies ======== Iain Buchanan First up this month is what I'm sure you've all been waiting for: The Wizard Of Oz. If you don't know what this is, you have clearly picked up this magazine by mistake! Anyway, it's out from Warner Home Video on 5th November on both VHS and DVD in a completely restored edition. The DVD also features out-takes and a "Making Of" feature hosted by Angela Lansbury. As a joint promotion between ourselves and Warner Home Video, we have ten copies (five each on VHS and DVD) to give away. Also available as a giveaway are three VHS and three DVD copies of Ellen DeGeneres Live. They went on sale from 1st October and are produced by VVL who have kindly provided our freebies. Not just one for the dykes, although I would imagine a lot of them will have gone moist at the very name. Finally, if you missed the chance to get a free VHS copy of "From The Edge Of The City" which was reviewed in ScotsGay 41, these nice people at Millivres Prowler have given us a further 3 copies on DVD to give away to readers. It's a rather disturbing tale with rentboys, drug users and an underlying futility - very enjoyable. Just write to Freebies, ScotsGay, PO Box 666, Edinburgh. EH7 5YW. and indicate which video or DVD you would like. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Music Review ============= by Simon Smith Gareth Valentine Requiem (CDTER 1258) Gareth Valentine composed his Requiem, as he tells us in the CD booklet, "as a visceral response to the grim swathe of AIDS which touched almost everyone I knew at that time, one way or another.". This is monumental cause for a musical tribute, and it is difficult and unreasonable to doubt its composer's sincerity. However, if we detach the music from this conveniently emotive wrapping, it becomes obvious that sincerity alone is not enough. While the Requiem contains many things of interest, as it goes on it becomes ever more difficult to accept it as piece of serious music. Its most severe shortcoming is that it is utterly devoid of originality, and one cannot shake off the feeling that a piece which says as little as this is, frankly, pointless. The music does have points in its favour; there are some nice instrumental touches, for instance the tam-tam in the Introit, string harmonics at the end of the Lacrymosa and Libera Me, the celesta in the Agnus Dei; the Kyrie Eleison incorporates a powerful choral climax; but overall the music is flat and featureless. The potential of the forces available (five soloists, choir, strings, two pianos and percussion) seems grossly under-explored. The Offertorio, which I would venture to suggest is intended as the emotional core to the work, is probably most unpleasant of all. The harmony and instrumental/vocal gestures are hideously trite and sentimental. Undoubtedly it will work for many people, but I just felt cheated by it. Some attempt is made to make this music 'significant' by bringing it back at the end of the penultimate track (Libera Me/Requiem) - neither a novel nor particularly successful idea. The CD booklet champion's the work's melodic wonders, and indeed the melodies are easy on the ear (this seems a more important parameter than their effectiveness). This does not make up for other failures. The harmony in general is a major problem. Either it is just clumsy (there is a particularly painful modulation at the end of the Recordare), or over-blown and still ineffective (for example, a supposedly climactic circle of fifths in the Pie Jesu). All credit to the performers, however, who make the best of the work whatever its merits (though I can't help thinking that soprano Susan Bullock's voice, lovely as it is, is really out of place in a piece like this). This piece belongs in the same category as those Requiem settings of Andrew Lloyd-Webber and John Rutter (to both of which it owes an embarrassing amount). Perhaps if it had been written fifteen years ago it would sound better; but as it trundled onwards I couldn't help thinking that I had heard all of this before. Gareth Valentine's Requiem is released by TER on 5 November. For each copy sold, GBP1 will be donated to the AIDS charity Crusaid. simon_smith@lineone.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Glasgay preview =============== by Martin Powell In the last issue mention was made of Glasgay! 2001. In this issue we go into more detail. Now in its seventh year Britain's largest gay and lesbian arts festival is back in Glasgow for ten days from Friday 26 October to Sunday 4 November. Although based around The Tron there are events at about a dozen venues around the city. And what a range, including theatre, music, comedy, visual arts, variety, literature, film, workshops and other events. If there's not something in that list which appeals then in my book you're a miserable git. Tim Miller's new show Glory Box (Tron, 2 & 3 Nov), has its Scottish Premiere. Billed as a funny, sexy, and politically charged exploration of same-sex marriage. It tells of the struggle for immigration rights for lesbian and gay bi-national couples and recounts the struggle that Miller has had in trying to keep his Australian partner in the US. The amazing Tomasini (Tron, 4 Nov), is a mad operatic extravaganza. Four octaves of clowning, miming, and clubbing in an Italian feast of high notes and low comedy. Are 21st century gay men the equivalent of 18th century castrati? If you're looking for music you may choose Gay Jeans (Tron, 26 Oct), the Festival launch party which promises everything from Bollywood to Bananarama, Beastie Boys to Barbarella. "DJ Hushpuppy blends (qu)ear-otic picture lounge, novelty rock and art-punk electro in a dizzying party cocktail." Don't ask me what that means. If folk, blues, and country are more your thing then try The Helen Reeves Trio & Wilby (Tron, 28 Oct). Helen Reeves returns to Glasgay with a guitar, bass, and mandolin ensemble giving her strong songwriting and distinctive voice an easy-going, rootsy sound. Also appearing is up and coming lesbian singer-songwriter Rosie Wilby making her first Glasgow appearance to promote her new single. The Lorraine Bowen experience (Tron, 27 Oct) combines high camp eccentric comedy with loveable unforgettable songs. Astounding audiences with her ability to play the keyboard with every available part of her anatomy and her dazzling array of exotic costumes. Scott Capurro supported by Craig Hill are performing (Stand, 1 Nov). Other than the fact that they are in Glasgow I know little else. In the visual arts the exhibition Typically Men (Gallery of Modern Art, 26 Oct-27 Jan), looks interesting. A collection of photographs by seventeen world-renowned male photographers including Sunil Gupta, Robert Mapplethorpe, and John Coplans. Down at Waterstone's, Sauchiehall Street there is quite a programme of events featuring P P Harnett, who will be reading from his new novel Sixteen, Stephanie Theobold, whose latest novel is Sucking Shrimp, Jenny Roberts, Patrick Gale, Cathel O Searcaigh and David Kinloch. The film on offer looks exciting with a major focus on the work of Derek Jarman with screenings of Sebastiane (27 Oct), Jubilee (28 Oct), Caravaggio (3 Nov), and Wittgenstein (4 Nov). However there are many, many more good films on offer. For more details get the festival brochure or visit the web site at http://www.glasgay.co.uk/. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTSGAY VOICE FOR PERSONALS ============================ (We regret that this service is only available within the UK) To reply to ScotsGay Voice Ads, phone 09068 556613 (calls charged at 60p per minute) and use the number at the end of the ad.
