What is gossiped freely around the pub can have a life changing effect if it is printed in the papers or made the subject of a book. But, it can't hurt when the subject is dead. And they can't sue either! So, that brings me to the late Queen Mother. Beloved by everyone or a racist old boot - it all depends if you believe the Daily Mail or the Socialist Worker - the one thing you certainly could never say about her was that she didn't like pooves. In fact, she was well known to surround herself with gay men both as staff and as social companions. What hasn't come out (so to speak) was the way in which this remarkable old woman encouraged her junior homosexual household staff to be sexually promiscuous. Put simply, they were welcome to bring casual trade back with them but, if a relationship developed, this became a threat to their exclusive loyalty to her, and they were moved to other duties within the royal households. Good on yer, Mam! Some more interesting gossip going around at the moment is of the sort where we definitely aren't going to name names. There's the well kent public transport guru who owes his University degree to a bit of well applied cheating and his wrecked marriage to being caught in bed with the 15 year old Boy Next Door! And what about the senior Scottish politician from a rural constituency whose neighbour wandered into the house one day and found her in bed with a woman not her husband? Or an Edinburgh prude currently in the news who has been spotted in the outdoor trolling areas of the city? Sorry. No names. Not in print. But buy me a pint and see just how loose my tongue can get! John Hein E-mail: johndunedin@drink.demon.co.uk. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ News ==== Objectionable Neighbour ----------------------- Court action by neighbours has forced the operators of Edinburgh's new gay sauna to close the doors after only a few hours of operation. The Steamworks Sauna in Broughton Market was awarded a Public Entertainment Licence by Edinburgh Council earlier this year despite over 70 letters orchestrated by John Bennett, Managing Director of Osprey Holidays Limited who have offices next door. However, the award of the licence is now the subject of an appeal to the Sheriff Court and the licence has ceased to have effect until the matter is resolved by a Sheriff. The Sheriff may re-instate the licence, revoke it or remit the matter to the Council again for further consideration. In a letter to the Council's Solicitor, Bennett claims that he would object in the same way had the sauna been for heterosexual use. "If the Council agrees to these licences and the use of the premises, how can you reconcile such action with the issue of public health and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases at a time when the Health Education Board for Scotland is spending thousands advertising to persuade people to take care in their relationships." He continues, "I would also ask what plans the Council intend to make to handle waste disposal from the premises. One assumes that if the clients take care there will be large numbers of condoms and other waste that cannot be flushed away and which could be high risk in terms of HIV/AIDS." And, in a letter to neighbours, Bennett complains that the sauna "will have a negative effect on the area and will undoubtedly impact on the quality of life and the value of property". Steamworks Director Martin Cooper strongly denies this. "We have spent a lot of money improving our property and it actually now looks a lot better than Mr Bennett's scruffy premises. This is a world class sauna which will be operated in a professional manner. The police have no objections. The fire brigade have no objections. The council have no objections." "We just cannot understand why Mr Bennett is protesting so much!" Bairns Meet ----------- Freda Brodie reports on happenings in Falkirk: Our meeting on 18th April was attended by a phenomenal 55 people. I can't believe how quickly the group is growing. On the night, we managed to get some work done on the organisation's constitution. We also got the committee elected which means we are nearly in a position to start applying for funds. One of the most important things that have come out of that meeting is the name of the group. After many suggestions and voting the group has adopted the name Falkirk Lesbian and Gay Society (FLAGS). I hope you like it. Although the name does not include bisexuals and trans this does not mean we are excluding you. Everyone is welcome to the group that has a positive interest in the LGBT community. Stuart Hammond came to the meeting and told us all about Pride Scotland this year and it sounds like it will be an unmissable event. Part of this year's Pride event is the Priscilla bus which is taking poetry and art around the country. Stuart asked if FLAGS wanted the bus to come to Falkirk and this was met with an overwhelming YES. The bus will be here on 18th June but the location and times are still to be agreed. We have to find them premises to put the stuff. Another visitor to the night was Iyaah from CTDU Falkirk who came along to tell us what they can offer us by way of help. The CTDU provides training and development aid to voluntary and charity organisations such as committee training. She also brought along a couple of the banners they have produced and we are hoping that they can make one for us by the time we take part in Pride. There was a decision taken to take part in the Pride March and if you want wrist bands to enter the park after the parade let us know cause we are planning to place one big order to help Pride Scotland out and cut down on admin for them. These money from these bands, they are asking for a minimum GBP6 donation, will go towards the costs. Stuart promises us that they have something really special in mind for the centre stage and that there will be plenty entertainment going on. We might be arranging a bus or some form of transport to go through. We would also like to enter a float in the parade so if anyone knows of someone with a suitable vehicle we are waiting for your details. Hopefully our next meeting will be as well attended as this last one. It is on Thursday 16th May at 7.30pm in the Community Education Building, Park Street, Falkirk. We are hoping that after this we will be meeting in licensed premises. Negotiations are under way to secure a room in a pub once a month for social meetings. No disco or stuff like that yet but just somewhere to be who you are and socialise with others from your community. More details on that as it happens. That's all for now folks and I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting. Bog Off ------- Two Edinburgh cottages are causing concern to local police and action may be imminent. ScotsGay has learned that Lothian & Borders Police at Gayfield Square Station claim that they are receiving an increasing number of complaints of "anti-social behaviour" at the public lavatories in London Road and Cathedral Lane. And members of Edinburgh's LGBT Community Safety Forum who are helping to produce a community-friendly policy on policing sex in public places have been informed that, unless the problem abates, police will have no alternative but to launch a clamp-down operation and make arrests in the very near future. However, ScotsGay has also heard from regular cottagers that police, hunting in packs of up to eight, have already been patrolling cottages throughout the city and taking names and addresses of found ins. At least one arrest is said to have taken place at Morrison Street. Beyond Barriers --------------- Beyond Barriers, the national initiative to challenge prejudice and homophobia and to build links between minority and majority groups in Scotland was launched in The Arches in Glasgow on 18th March. Speakers included Primary School Teacher and Researcher in Equality; Sharon Mae Mcleod, Chairperson of the National Lottery Communities Fund; Kay Hampton and Beyond Barriers Spokesperson; Ailsa Spindler. Beyond Barriers is the first lottery funded Scotland wide initiative to challenge homophobia and prejudice and work with other excluded groups. It will do this through information, training research and community development to groups and organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors. The project's three aims are: * To enable lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people to develop the skills and motivation necessary to ensure that the community is strong and sustainable. * To ensure that local support and services exist and are publicised so that LGBT people can live their lives free from discrimination and exclusion * To make equality of opportunity widely recognised, that will apply to all people in Scottish society. The project is based in the Glasgow LGBT Centre. A Beltane Good Time ------------------- The Beltane Fire Festival (Edinburgh Calton Hill, 30th April: arrive 9.30pm) is one of Scotland's most spectacular events. And getting the perfect image to sum it up is a real challenge! So Beltane Fire Society invites all spectators to enter our competition to "Capture the Spirit of Beltane". Like most things Beltane, this event is mostly about the fun and fulfilment of taking part. But prizewinners will enjoy the kudos of formal recognition and having their work published in forthcoming exhibitions as well as on the BFS web site. And there's a unique Beltane T-shirt on offer too! Entry is only as described at the competition web site http://photo.beltane.org/ and entrants must observe the rules andguidelines outlined there. There are also lots of useful tips about both following the event itself and achieving great photographic results. Petitioners Humbly Pray ----------------------- A gay 74 year old Dumfries-shire man has petitioned the European Parliament over the way in which Inheritance Tax affects unmarried couples. In his petition, the retired computer programmer points out that, "under British Law, the entire estate of a deceased person may pass, free of tax, to a surviving domestic partner provided both partners were married to each other. However, many domestic partners have no wish to marry each other and many more are denied the privilege of doing so (if indeed such it is)". He and his same sex-domestic partner, who is 69, have lived together for the last 24 years but the house in which they live is in his name although his partner has "over the years, worked with me to greatly improve the house and to create a garden". The problem is that the value of the house has now risen to a level where it could be unavoidable for his partner to sell his only home to pay Inheritance Tax on the estate. "The situation arises solely because exemption from Inheritance Tax as between domestic partners is restricted to those who happen to be married to each other. The practicalities of defining and recording domestic partnerships require consideration but since, in Britian, all marriages require civil registration the way is clearly open to extend the use of this register." The Petition (No 300/2002) is being supported by Professor Neil MacCormick MEP. In a letter to ScotsGay, the petitioner observes that this will become an increasingly serious problem for same-sex couples, as it will for unmarried couples, for all sorts of reasons - life-styles, inflation, increasing property values, et al. Nice Tunes, Shame about the Words --------------------------------- Holy Trinity Metropolitan Community Church is marking the launch of their new, inclusive language hymnal with a special Songs of Praise service on Sunday, 28th April. The Service will take place at the Quaker Meeting House, Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh at 6pm (see http://www.mccedinburgh.com/directions.html). Metropolitan Community Church was originally founded within the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered communities as a result of the exclusion of those communities by many Churches. MCC's ministry now extends beyond these communities but the Church seeks to learn from that original exclusion and to be a Church that welcomes everybody. All Metropolitan Community Churches seek to use language which, like the Gospel, includes all people. While Jesus used many different images when teaching about God, Churches have traditionally focused on "male" images of God to the exclusion of all others. Similarly, many traditional hymns have used male focused words when they have been trying to refer to people as a whole. The new hymnal seeks to take a fresh approach to hymns old and new and this may be the first time that a hymnal has been produced in Scotland which uses only inclusive language. The special service will focus on praising God in song and everyone is welcome to join us for this special day. For more information E-mail: mail@mccedinburgh.com or call Rev Ian Bonner-Evans on 0131-347 8699. GAY MEN'S WEALTH ---------------- Edinburgh Gay Men's Health is one of only ten UK charities to be highly commended and receive GBP1,000 in the GlaxoSmithKline International IMPACT Awards 2002. GMH has an innovative approach to dealing with HIV and AIDS. It uses commercial gay venues to hold events, establishing support groups outside Edinburgh to meet the needs of rural gay men and offers training for healthcare professionals. Pride Lines Up -------------- Pride Scotland has announced the line-up for their 2002 'Rainbow Party on Glasgow Green'. This year will be the biggest Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered festival yet seen in Scotland. Taking place on Saturday June 22nd from 2.30pm, the event features an appearance by top girl group, Atomic Kitten, and Hannah Jones, Tina Cousins, Tom Robinson and recent 'stars in their eyes' winner Gary Mullen aka Freddie Mercury, this will be a Pride to remember. Pride Scotland have just released 5000 advance passes to the party, which are available by postal application from the Pride Festival office. They are asking for a Minimum donation of GBP6 to cover costs in staging this event, which will also feature a funfair, diversity and dance tents, a market area and dedicated women's space, as well as more very special guests to be announced. Priority will be given to our supporters and marchers on the day, so book now to avoid disappointment. We can promise you an LGBT party to remember." Scotland Needs a Bigger One --------------------------- Outright Scotland recently responded to the Scotland Office consultation on the size of The Scottish Parliament by urging the Secretary of State to increase the number of MSPs. Writing for Outright Scotland, Andrew Wilson argues that more MSPs are needed if the Parliament is to accurately reflect the Scottish people, carry out its work effectively and head off the increasing power of patronage of the Scottish Executive. Outright Scotland's response to the recent consultation on the size of the Scottish Parliament is now available online at http://www.outright-scotland. org.uk/ScottishParliament.htm TRANS ----- TransAlba will be maintaining a presence at Edinburgh's Cafe Nexus every Saturday from 3pm for drop in and chat. IT -- We Bissums in Dundee has been awarded GBP1,310 by the National Lottery Community Fund. The money will go to providing computer equipment and fund training for members. BAR FOR SALE ------------ According to the Scottish Licensed Trade News, the lease of the Holyrood Tavern in Edinburgh is up for sale. BIRD BRAINS ----------- ScotsGay has received several moans from an Inverness man who wants to get in touch with Gay Birders who seem to have sunk without trace. Could somebody get in touch so that we can pass on current contact details? BEAR BASH --------- BearScots will be welcoming bears and bearlovers from around the world for this year's BearScotFest. The fest will take place in Edinburgh from 4th-6th October. Contact info: see Listings on pages 28-29. VEG OUT ------- Any vegetarians interested in getting together in restaurants or homes for cooking, sharing recipies, eating meals, etc. Phone Brian on 0141-883 2715. ELLIPTICAL BALLS ---------------- An interest meeting for a Scottish Gay Rugby Club will be held on Saturday the 18th of May at 1pm in the Laughing Duck, 24 Howe Street,(bottom of Fredrick Street) Edinburgh. Two members of the Manchester Spartans will be present and one of the founding members of the San Francisco team will attend to share some of their experience on getting started. The meeting is for people who are serious about either playing or supporting a gay Scottish rugby team and is not a meeting for people who are solely in to rugby player types (if there is such a thing?)! Everyone is welcome: people of different shapes and sizes make up a team and if you don't feel fit to play, remember that's what training is all about. E-mail: caledoniagayrugby@hotmail.com HAPPINESS IS: A WARM, FURRY PUSSY --------------------------------- May 6th will be "Curl up with your cat day". Curling up with your cat costs nothing and research has shown that stress symptoms are lowest amongst cat "owners" so the more time you spend with your cat, the more relaxed you could be. Stroking your cat and listening to peaceful purring sounds will reduce tension and lower blood pressure, The day is part of the Cats Protection League's 75th anniversay celebrations. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Time for T ---------- In the last edition, I promised to tell you about the reality of Transsexuality. Don t worry, I'm not going to get all dry and scientific on you. Let's try it this way. There I was, swimming around in the womb, like I had been for the last 12 weeks, when zzzzzaaaaaapppppp!!!!!! Something hit me like a bolt of lightning. Puzzled, I consulted my owner's manual and discovered that I had just received a massive burst of testosterone. I was comforted to read that another would hit me in four weeks time, and this one would construct my brain so that I could make sense of the first one. So I waited. And waited and waited. I'm still waiting. It never happened. This is what gives rise to the old saying of transsexuals that "I am a woman trapped inside a man's body". The fact is that my brain was designed to run on oestrogen, and has had to run on testosterone instead. Think of the difference between petrol and diesel engines. This is the reality. Medicine couldn't alter my brain, but they could alter my body, and that's what they've done. Of course, female to male transsexuals didn't get the first hormone burst, but got the second, which means that they are men trapped inside women's bodies. So when people ask me when I became transsexual, I truthfully tell them sixteen weeks old. Transsexuality is no more a lifestyle choice than is being gay or lesbian or bisexual, but just like everybody else, acknowledging who and what I am leads to lifestyle choices in order to have any quality of life. I myself am bisexual, and so count myself very much a part of the LGBT community, and I am eternally grateful that the LGB part of the community thought to include the T's, as are many of my sisters and brothers. News TransAlba are now meeting at the LGB Centre in Edinburgh on the third Saturday of every month, from 2-4pm, so why not come along. We are there for Transsexuals (M2F, F2M), their partners, family and friends. If you want info, need advice, a friendly ear or above all a safe environment in which to learn and practice those skills you will need to pass , we are there for you. We also operate a helpline every Wed eve from 7.-9pm. Ring me on: 0781 846 7512, or Caroline on 07930 880 410. I'm also keen to open this column to all the boys and girls out there in T-Land. So if you have any news or views, E-mail me. I look forward to hearing from you. And now, the joke: Guy and Damian are getting changed at the Gym. Guy turns to Damian and says "I didn't know you were a cross-dresser". "What makes you think that?" asks Damian. "You're wearing women's knickers", says Guy. "Oh", says Damian, "I've worn these ever since my wife found a pair on the back seat of the car!" Eight winners in the Glasgow heat, to be held at Bennet's nightclub, will go on to the grand final at the London Astoria. The photo shows the finalists from the recent Manchester heat with comperes Jean T and Judith McNamara. Twenty five contestants strutted their stuff, displaying the diversity of lesbian images and lifestyles. These ranged from the Ms Butch with her pitbull terrier to a near naked alien dyke to the sweet Ms Femme who would like nothing better than to knead dough with Nigella Lawson. Hostess and organiser, Jean T said "It was a great night with more lovely contestants than ever and a fantastic audience". All Scottish Sapphics are enouraged to enter-- call 07956 400 029 for an application form or download one from http://www.nlbc2002.com/ Woman to Woman: an everywoman's guide to lesbian sexuality ---------------------------------------------------------- Carol Booth Simon and Schuster GBP10.00 This ambitious book aims to "cover the issues particular to lesbian relationships, both sexual and emotional" and manages a reasonably good job for a 280-page paperback. The author is a doctor and was inspired to write the book after a discussion with another doctor who confessed a lack of knowledge for helping out a patient who coming out to herself and had asked for advice. This book is aimed at the patient, to answer all her questions about what lesbians do in bed, her own body, orgasms, relationships and sexual health. Booth came out to herself later in life and makes no assumptions about the age of the reader. There are special chapters for both older and younger lesbians. One chapter "Am I lesbian? Does it really matter?" looks at the whole issue of identity. Not only does she not pretend that bisexuality doesn't exist, she illustrates the Kinsey scale as a bell curve! Issues such as BDSM are tackled without prejudice-- it seems the author simply wants people to be happy and safe, an admirably attitude. Nor does she pretend that prejudice has gone away, "Doubly Difficult" profiles lesbians with disabilities, from religious families and from non-white communities. She lets the women concerned speak for themselves. Health is important. An excellent appendix gives the most thorough overview of sexually-transmittied infections which can affect women who have sex with women I've ever seen, and there are four chapters on health and knowing the body. I would recommend the first chapter to straight and bisexual men, especially the bits about the clitoris! The one let-down is that the resources are mostly in Australia and haven't been revised for the UK edition. Brother Bimbo del Doppio Senso, OPI. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Glaschu/Glasgow =============== Arse Bandit With Attitude HIYA SCUMBAGZ! Hmph! - My small Bald Ginger Editor is screaming for his copy again, so I'm stuck here on a Sunday evening trying to concentrate while Mrs Goldilocks flits around having one of his housework frenzies As usual, we'll kick off with the round up of forthcoming clubnights for all you dancing queens, and seeing as FUSION is the one that all you fairies seem to like best, we'll start with that. The next date for FUSION is Saturday May the 11th at the Riverside Club. The guest DJ for next month is Gonzalo, who would appear to be some big name DJ from Trade who will be playing "energetic funky chunky choons". Gonzalo will be doing his set from 1-3.30am with Greg Adamson doing the warm up from Midnight-1am. There are also 2 pre-clubs with Greg Adamson in Bar Gaudi from 8-11pm, and Robin in the Candle Bar from 9-11pm. Tickets are a tenner on the door as there is a guest DJ, and the dress code for the night is flashy/trashy. Shouldn't be a problem for some of the trash we currently have on the scene MELTING POT are holding a Bank Holiday special on Sunday the 5th of May. In addition to resident DJs Simon Cordiner and Billy Woods, there will be special guests Simon Haggis and Toni Rossano from Strut Records. Venue is the Riverside club as usual, with tickets costing a tenner on the door. This is an extra date for you little club bunnies, and MELTING POT will also be running on Saturday the 25th of May. Remember that MELTING POT is now running on the last Saturday of the month. As FRUITFLY are no longer running in Glasgow, fans of Fisher and Price now have to catch them through in Edinburgh, and the date for this month is Sunday the 28th of April when you can hear guest DJ Alex Anderson from The Gallery in London. The next date for TRAXX at the Soundhaus is Saturday the 4th of May, where you have three rooms open, playing 3 different types of music. You have to be a member to get in, so call 07855 418745 for details. FOOT THERAPY goes ahead at Alaska on Friday 3rd of May, and tickets are ten quid with GBP8 concessions. Resident DJ is Laurence Hughs, and fuck knows who the guest is next month, cos they forgot to send me the latest press release! TRAXX will also be holding their usual clubnight at the Arches on Friday the 10th of May, and DJs for the night are Kenny Dixon Jnr, Theo Parrish, Rick Wilhite and Mailk Pittman. Tickets are a rather pricey GBP14 quid, so those of you without a sugar daddy better start saving now. OK, 14 quid is a bit expensive, but the place does hold 800, so you should at least get a half decent shag that night. And finally, Mrs Goldilocks's favourite - BEDLAM. This is the monthly Goth night up at the Queen Margaret Union, and this month's date is Saturday 27th April. Tickets are the usual lovely cheapo 3 quid, and you can get pished for under a tenner - can't be bad. Not exactly a clubnight, but the CCA are holding a monthly event called ABNORMALS ANONYMOUS. Here you can enjoy "performance art, live contemporary music, short film screenings and an installation piece followed by a twelve step programme of eclectic homo-disceau taking in four decades and countless genres of pop muzak" I don't know what the fuck that means either, but it sounds like a gig, followed by a mucky video with a disco afterwards.. Anyway, the next date is Friday the 24th of May, when Proforma will be providing the live music, Louise Welsh will be reading extracts from her novel "The Cutting Room", and there will be two videos to end the evening. Tickets are GBP8 and there are GBP6 concesssions. I don't know how well this will do in Glasgow, but it might be a good place to pick up a bit of arty farty trade instead of the usual brain dead disco dollies on the scene. Well, those seem to be all the clubnights for this issue - takes ages to wade through all the pish and pretentious waffle in the press releases. If these guys weren't so far up their own arses and spoke English, I could do this a lot quicker! Right then! ScotsGay's Dundee columnist didn't half cause a stir when he revealed that Madame Grumpy, owner of Libertys was intending to open another Scottish club in the last issue. As there are already rumours circulating about a new club opening in Edinburgh, and various rumours about Glasgow, it all got a bit confusing, with both the Glasgow and Edinburgh queens thinking they would shortly be getting a new venue. Sadly, this is not the case, and it is in fact Aberdeen which will be the lucky city. (Details in my boyfriend's Aberdeen column, and that's 2 for the guest list, Brian). Anyway, I've spoken to Madame Grumpy to complain about putting Dod'n'Bunty Town before Glasgow, and he assures me that he is still hoping to move into Glasgow, to give us something to rival the city's 2 straight owned, part time, allegedly gay friendly, crummy clubs. It's just a case of waiting till the right premises come on the market, and he'll make his move. Plays his cards close to his chest does Madame Grumpy. Never gives much away, then suddenly books an advert in ScotsGay for his latest venture! PRIDE SCOTLAND have recently announced the line up for this year's festival on Saturday June 22nd. The procession of 5000 nuns, drag queens, camp screamy schemies and all the other stereotypes the straight world just love to see us reinforcing will end at Glasgow Green where a host of big name stars are booked to appear. Atomic Kitten (some sort of girl group), Hannah Jones (gay icon apparently), Tina Cousins (something similar) Tom Robinson (70's gay campaigner who's still dead shaggable) and Gary Mullen (winner of something called "Stars in their Eyes") will all be there from 2.30pm onwards. 5000 advance passes have already been released, so if you want to guarantee a place on the Green, send off your donation (GBP6 min) ASAP. SNIPPETS AND STUFF >>> The Wednesday clubnight at Victorias is no longer running. Pity really, as the opening night was a good laugh, but the queens just didn't seem to want to head up to that end of town. This was the same problem with Media - beautiful club and cheap prices, but the scene will always put up with any old overpriced pish as long as they don't have too far to walk. >>> Sadie Frosts, the unwelcoming dive that used to be a reasonable gay bar is no longer accepting credit cards, so take real money if you're going for a meal. Is the 3% surcharge getting too much these days, or is there something we should know? By the way - I've had more complaints in recently regarding Sadies "no kissing" rule (only applies to poofs). Just remember - this is a place which still tries to call itself a gay bar, and loves to take your money, yet practices discrimination against the LGBT Community. They don't want to go upsetting those straights with their kiddies, when it's SOOO much easier to grind the gay scene into the dirt!>>> The word going round the licensed trade is that one of Glasgow's club/pub groups is having pressure put on them from the brewery they borrowed from regarding the state of their repayments, and certain establishments may shortly be coming on the market. Change of ownership on the way for a couple of places perhaps?? >>> I had an interesting complaint in recently regarding one of the scene venues being a bit naughty with their drinks promos. It would seem that they had posters up clearly indicating that the drinks promo would apply throughout the night, but when the venue became very busy, the bouncers were ordered to remove the posters, and the drinks immediately returned to full price. And why not?? OK, so a few disgruntled queens will make a few noises, but what the fuck - they'll still go back for more! Actually, the place has been reported, and I might do a name and shame next month after further investigation. >>> Much grumbling about the shorter opening hours in EasyInternetCafe. Seems that the queens are missing being able to pile out of the pubs and into EE to get a shag online. Shame >>> I've been asked to pass on thanks to those pubs who have been supporting the LGBT Centre with their fundraising events, particularly The Waterloo, and The Revolver and their customers for raising a fair amount of money over the past few months. Of course, it's the customers of these sort of places who actually have money - the teeny trendies from certain other places might look the part, but can't really afford to contribute to charities from their minimum-wage shitty jobs (if any). >>> Gordon and Alex from Spa19 will shortly be issuing a statement regarding their plans for the new sauna. This is due to the conflicting rumours about when and where it will be opening. Spa19 are currently sponsoring Phace Scotland, who are running drop in clinics on Wednesdays in the club, so if you want any info about your sex life you'll find them running their clinic in the gym. Right then - I think that's enuff tripe, trash and trivia for this month, I'm off to bed! Thanks to all of you who keep sending me your lovely letters. Most of them are pure filth, but it's nice to know my fans still love me. Sadly, Mrs Goldilocks doesn't let me go out shagging any more, so I'll have to disappoint you all. Now, anyone who knows me will tell you that me walking more than the length of myself is the amazing part of that statement, but I was chuffed to bits! Fucking freezing, an hour later, admittedly, but chuffed, none-the-less. There's quite a bit of news to report this month, so get yourself a cocoa and sit down comfortably, I'll be asking questions later. We've had confirmation from The Townhouse Sauna that they are not moving, and are actually planning a refurbishment. No news yet on the re-opening of the "Health Club" in Broughton Market. Planet Out, as you will already know, is now under the capable control of Louise, and her boy wonder, Blair. They have loads of exciting new plans for the bar, which should, in no time return it to its former glory, as Edinburgh's premier gay bar. (Not that it's been doing badly anyway!) They are planning another paint job, which will be nice, as often I've had to think whether my stomach is lined before I go in there with the purple and yellow explosion that is the current decor. The bar has a new policy of encouraging pre-clubbers, and will be installing a new DJ box, lights, and more to make it clubbier at the weekends at least. (There's even talk of scantily clad dancers!) Lush have their pre-club party there every month on the last Friday, Trendy Wendy will be taking control of the helm on Mondays with their new "Pink Pound" night, which will involve paying GBP1 to come in, and thereafter all drinks will be GBP1. Scary biscuits, to be honest, but it should be a laugh, watching all you lot trying to force as much alcohol down your neck as you can in a few hours. UP! is another club, which will be hosting their pre-club party at Planet Out. The night, called "Planet UP!" will include the UP! DJs, and the unique sounds of UP!, also, there'll be free vodka jellies, free CD giveaways, and discount passes available from the bar staff! What more could you ask for? Cafe Habana continues to be busy with their hectic round of theme nights, including karaoke (yawn!) and there's also Luvely's pre-club party, which, with Luvely's premier range of DJs, is one not to be missed. The Laughing Duck, under the new management have been busier at weekends, and is a relaxing place to go for a drink on the weeknights, with the log fire (OK, I know it's not real!) and the cosy little booths upstairs. They've just introduced a new menu this week, with 2 main meals for just GBP5.99! At the weekends, there's drink promos upstairs from 5-8pm and downstairs with the DJ from 10.30pm-1am. Speaking of food, I've recently eaten in the Blue Moon for the first time in ages, and am happy to report that the food was excellent, the service was fast and efficient, and they even had music other than kd lang on! I may even go back! Another new night on the scene this month was "Vibe" at Ego. There was loads of gossip around about this night before it even started. Tuesday night was a veritable desert up until about 6 months ago, and then all of a sudden there was Fairy Liquid, one of my recommended nights, with beautiful boys and girls, great cheesy choons, and even better, cheap boozy juice! Then, this month, all of a sudden, there's another jewel in the Tuesday crown, Vibe, is run by James Longworth, of icons fame, and, of course, was a big production number, with pyrotechnics, although the promised Miming Nun, dancing hairy bloke, and semi-naked dancers didn't appear to materialise (we have photographic evidence of the Miming Nun, but it was nothing to do with us--the Convent of Dunn Eideann). Never mind, it was, by all accounts, a great success as an opening night. Let's hope that like so many other nights, it doesn't rest on its laurels, and get complacent. And continues to bring new and exciting things to midweek clubbing. Talking of Ego, another one of my recommended nights is, of course Lush, with DJs Dale and Craig, and a merry drunken fun is had by all (or is that just me?) Don't miss out on the last Friday of each month. There are loads of really good clubs on every weekend, and yet, there's still a queue at CCs on a Friday and Saturday. Get a grip people, and try something new! Mingin', JOY, Luvely, UP!, Atomic Baby, Progression, even The Mission, for those of you who like their music a little more rocky, are all gay friendly or totally gay clubs, where the music is more up to date, the people are friendly, and there's no karaoke! All of the above clubs have healthy gay contingencies, but the whole thing about going out surely isn't about copping off? Surely there's more than just me who go to places to meet interesting people, to dance and hear the latest music, and to have a damn good laugh and misbehave without risk of getting thrown out in the cold by Neanderthal bouncers whose sense of humour gene was removed with their hair! We're adults, and quite capable of policing our own behaviour without being watched over like a group of ten year olds. Anyway, enough of my ranting for another month. I'll hopefully see you at one of the nights I've mentioned, and if you see me on the dancefloor, in a bit of a mess, then I'm having a good time, don't worry! Take care of yourself and each other. Tottytastic E-mail: tottytastic@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------------- Bi Vocal ======== It was so ridiculous a suggestion, so offensive a concept - I had to laugh. Desperately trying to be Politically Correct this small group of middle class lefties in the corner of Planet Out were trying to decide who to send to a meeting about disability and minority issues. These straight able-bodied white well meaning folk devised a system called Oppression Points. Gay - 1 point. Black - 1 point. Disability - between 1 and 10 depending on the 'special needs.' (Of course this idea is hardly original - but they didn't seem to know that) So there I was sitting with my back to them with a friend, quietly merry, giggling away, when a wheelchair user who caught a minute or so of their conversation leapt out of her chair, grabbed one of her crutches and started beating one of them over the head with it. This scene, of course, was all too much. Especially when it took three, yes - three! very able bodied bouncers to drag her off the poor miserable well meaning man. Days later I met the women again in the Blue Moon. Her name is Jill what follows are the views of three people with differing disabilities. Jill, a 45 year old white lesbian who is a wheel chair user and accountant (with a violent streak). Also Benny, an 18 year old nicely tanned gay male civil servant who has been totally deaf since he was 2. And Chris, a 30 year old bisexual black man who has full blown Aids and currently can not work. These are their words, not my own. Jill - The gay scene really pisses me off sometimes. Woman see me in a wheelchair and they either take a wide birth or they kneel down and speak to me really slowly My. Name. Is. Emma. Well if you are reading this Emma (politely) please don't do that again. Benny - I have encountered problems sometimes in getting served but this has been mainly due to the experiences of bar staff that have maybe had some trouble previously from a deaf person perhaps. Sometimes communication isn't all it could be and in a pub situation, you may find a deaf person getting more involved with alcohol due to many different reasons. Generally, with pubs on the scene I have had a favorable response and many bar staff have been willing to make the effort to aid communication. In general though, this scenario is reflected with other gay people whose limited experience with deaf or hearing-impaired people may reflect a previous bad experience. In their mind if they have had hassle with a deaf person, then all deaf people must be the same--mustn't they? Part of this attitude is due to the unknown factor of the disability. It is little wonder that deaf or hearing- impaired conditions are referred to as a 'hidden disability' The only other aspect I have experienced is when some people are attracted to you in a pub or club perhaps, realize or find out I'm deaf then bolt in the opposite direction like I'm going to harm them or something. Some people don't want to deal with someone who will take a bit of effort to communicate with. They just want a quick no hassle introduction to weigh up their chances and then decide what their next move is going to be. Finally, the younger element seems to be more accepting in some ways, perhaps reflecting the general change in society of acceptance and inclusion. Chris - I don't go on the scene anymore. Believe it or not the worst I've had to deal with was from another HIV positive man who knew that I knew his status but nobody else did. Like a closeted queer in the straight world he got very nervous and abusive. Eventually he announced to the whole bar that I had Aids then couldn't understand why most people around him went, "Yes, So We know" Are gay people more tolerant than heterosexuals of HIV? You would hope so wouldn't you. Events held by Gay Men's Health and Pride Scotland help raise awareness and do a great job, but this message doesn't reach everybody. Of course events like Pride have to make extra effort to be totally inclusive. Benny - I haven't been to many events myself, but from what I perceive of the larger and sometimes televised events such as marches, then everyone is encouraged to come under the one umbrella in the name of the main cause. In any event though the message is only as good as the communication that brings it and events can help by having more simple training for stewards in disability awareness that would improve things. Signed accompaniment to speeches etc-- would certainly widen the accessibility to the message. Jill - What I really hate are the PC types who are in your face with the well meaning bullshit. It is really fantastic that organizations like Pride make so much effort to cater for the needs of people with disabilities - that's not what I mean. I'm talking about on an individual level, when you meet someone in a bar say. People assume that I have the special need for them to come up and speak to me because I am in a wheel chair. If I got up and left the wheel chair behind, would they still be speaking to it or me? This pissed women in Delmonicas exclaimed that she always wanted to get off with a cripple! Offensive, but honest! Benny - There are definitely guys who are attracted towards anyone with a disability and maybe some in particular who hone into deaf or hearing-impaired guys. Some are genuinely interested and make the effort to communicate and this may reflect their own personality. I don't think I've ever been the subject of a PC gay person, though in the straight world I have experienced that. Some guys, gay and straight, but more on the gay side seem to have some kind of need to facilitate relationships and make themselves almost indispensable in a way. I'm quite an independent person and have a very high level of coping adequately on my own and this in some cases confuses things when someone tries to facilitate a relationship. I was with two mates, one hearing and one deaf from my college once and we went to CC Blooms. Our hearing mate was cool and joined in some basic signing with us. Three guys approached us and started to try and communicate clumsily with us. You can't criticize anyone for making an effort but unknown to these guys we could lip-read quite well. The three guys were talking amongst themselves and were telling each other how they planned to separate us and one would make his move, confident that they were definitely going to get a shag for the night. Also, unknown to him, our mate was hearing and had just related their conversation to us. After a fair bit of winking, nods and encouraging smiles and eye contact the three guys were so convinced they agreed they'd phone each other the next day and compare notes. At this point our hearing mate then made the guys aware that at least one of us could hear. Exit left three very sheepish looking guys. No doubt most of their conversation was bravado and thankful wishing, but the assumption that deaf guys or people with disabilities will be an easy shag, as they won't have many other offers is also a common one. Chris - Most guys run a mile when you state that you're HIV positive. One even went into a gay chat room afterwards and started advertising it "CHRIS HAS AIDS! CHRIS HAS AIDS!" I wasn't on-line at the time but I'm told that most of the other guys in the room ignored him or told him to fuck off! I go into chat rooms quite a lot now as it is harder for me to get out and about. It is a fantastic way of meeting people and being youreslf. Or in fact, if you feel like it, being someone else entirely. The web is a great resourse for finding the latest information about treatments and theories and the like. Also there is masses of stuff about Babylon 5 which I am a huge fan of! Jill - My computer has been an absolute godsend. Things that I had to rely on other people to do I can now do on my own. I can get my shopping delivered to my door, I can talk to others in chat rooms, I even have my own website! The only problem is, and this goes for everyone not just the disabled, it is so easy that you can forget to go out! But my love for my PC is second only for my love of Angelina Joline. Benny - Computers have made a huge difference in communication for a lot of people with disabilities, not just deaf or hearing-impaired people. In the past, we would use a device called a Minicom that would scroll messages across a thin screen as they were typed in and transmit them to another person. The messages could only be sent on a one to one basis and to whoever you were calling. I suppose they were considered quite high tech at the time. Computers have opened up a whole new world of access and friendships to deaf and hearing-impaired people. Chatrooms have also made a huge difference and for those who wish to do so, meetings can be established and friendships developed. An aspect of safety may also have appeared in that people can get to know each other from afar, and also in a situation where people may have just gone to the pub to socialize before, the expense of doing this is also cut until people are ready. Interviews were undertaken in peron over the phone and, of course by E-mail. If you have a question for myself, Jill, Benny or Chris then you can E-mail the address below. There are a variety of groups and organisations that can help gay people with disabilities, please check out the listings section of this magazine. NEXT TIME - Nexus, with the Adam and Joe Show (with georgous pix) Martin Walker mgwuk@hotmail.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Obar Dheadhain/Aberdeen ======================= Hello everybody! It's been only two months since I said that Aberdeen would have a new gay venue with the opening of Fidel's, and now I have to do it again! Yes, that's right - on Friday 3rd May for the first time in memorable history Aberdeen is going to have three gay venues! The new club - called Out Clubbing - is located in the former Caesar's night club on Crown Street, just around the corner from Windmill Brae. It has a capacity of 300+, a large dance floor and decent sound and light system. It will be open 7 days a week, 11pm to 3am on Friday's and Saturdays and 11pm to 2am all other days. There are some great events lined up at this club, here is a peek at the first few weeks: Friday 10th May - No Reason, Scotland's very own boy band, will be playing; Friday 17th May - Sassy Stryker; Saturday 25th - Mr Gay UK; Friday 31st May - Tina Cousins, who will also be playing in Glasgow at Pride. Bar Castro's are having a "Here comes summer" party on Saturday the 27th April. Shorts and shades are the attire for the night for those of you daring enough and slush-cocktails will be cut price. Some of you have noticed the change in opening hours at Castro's, and also that the coffee machine has gone. The good news is that the coffee machine will be returning, and it is likely that the opening hours will be returned to 12-noon again shortly. Fidel's is going to host an example of garments from John Winters shop on Sunday 28th from about 8pm onwards. I have a feeling this could be a very popular event, especially when I say that the models for the evening will be Mike, Sandy and Ross from behind the bar! Fidel's has decided to extend its open-door policy until July. Originally, it would only be for the first fortnight and then there would be a GBP40 yearly membership charged. It is hoped that in July the plans for upstairs will get the go ahead from the licensing board, and then the door policy will change to members only. There will be a Gayleidh on May 4th, 8.30pm to 1am. Tickets are available from the Grampian Gay Men's Health Project at GBP5 each (phone: Aberdeen (01224) 587166). It will be held at the Jarvis City Hotel, and the band is Irn Broo, who are known for a great nights entertainment. At the last meeting of the North East Equality Forum (NEEF), an issue was raised about the lack of support for parents of LGBT children. They are therefore wishing to hear from parents, and their offspring, what form of support could be useful. If you have any suggestions or comments about this, then I am sure they would like to hear. The four working groups set up by the forum have also made good progress. These have been looking at the forum's constitution; the possibility of an LGBT centre; events for Pride 2002 in Aberdeen; and community information. If you wish to get involved in any of these groups, or have any issues to raise then either attend the next NEEF meeting, or get in touch with the Grampian Gay Men's Health Project or Grampian LGBT Switchboard. Chris, chris@cutearse.co.uk http://www.cutearse.co.uk/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scottish Media Monitor ====================== Garry Otton Celebrates Another Breakthrough ------------------------------------------- The headline: "TEEN SEX SHOCK" jumped out of the Dumfries and Galloway Standard and alarmed readers with the knowledge condoms were to be "dished out" to "kids as young as 14" in a bid to slash the number of teenage pregnancies in the region. This skipped lightly over the vital information that sexual-educationalists desperately want to be 'handed out' with the condoms. As covered previously in the Scottish Media Monitor, militant religionists were recruiting mostly pensioners in churches all over Motherwell and Hamilton to sign a petition that would outlaw this information in schools. It was eerie. Creepy. And it was happening in Lanarkshire. The Hamilton Advertiser reported: "School sex guidelines slammed as offensive". At a meeting held by the education committee of the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland, (I kid you not), it was reported that 50 people packed the Orange Halls in Larkhall to discuss resource books for teaching sex education in schools! It must've been like asking kids to vote on what they wanted to do in school. There was no mention of any of the studies that guided the way proper sex education needed to be taught in schools or their success in progressive European countries, only details of the "controversial" nature of this material. "Some of the explicit material in the booklet includes: Pupils role-playing homosexuality in the classroom, lessons about mutual masturbation with their partner and primary school teachers demonstrating condoms to pupils by putting them on an artificial penis". David Bryce, an elder at Hamilton Old Parish Church told the Hamilton Advertiser he was "disgusted". Once again, homosexuality united Protestant and Catholic when the Rev. Ron Campbell, grand chaplain of the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland grumbled: "There were words used in it that as adults we didn't understand. We had to look them up in a dictionary" A spokesperson for the South Lanarkshire Council said they would set up a working group that would provide guidelines for sex education and told the paper: "This includes consultation with parents and other parties such as churches and relative organisations. The final guidelines will then be adopted by individual schools". It stinks doesn't it? The council proudly insisted that they had been using the same resource materials for a number of years, despite boasting one of the highest incidents of teenage pregnancies in Europe. The Sunday Times Scotland took to airing the concerns of militant Catholic group Pro-Life Alliance who are taking a leaf out of the Scottish Media Monitor's book and challenging the portrayal of religionists in the media. Sister Roseann Reddy, who runs the Alliance from the Church Hall of Holy Cross Parish Church in Albert Road, Glasgow with donations that included GBP15,000 in the wake of Cardinal Winning's funeral, complained TV's Eastenders Dot Cotton and High Road's Mrs Mack were portrayed as "over the top" and "mad". Sister Reddy has been profiled on BBC's Everyman and also by Daniel Johnson in Scottish editions of the Daily Telegraph, who compared her to Mother Theresa. "Unlike most Catholic clergy, she is not shy of the media, but she is also wise to their knavish tricks. She has learnt from Cardinal Winning that it pays to be bold, but she has now emerged from his shadow as a formidable presence in her own right". I don't know what religionists have got to complain about. They already have the Scottish media eating out of their hand! Reddy told the Sunday Times: "Religion is not a minority thing in this country, yet in any of the soap operas, Christians are mad Any religious people in them are bonkers. They are complete wimps or completely mad". They have already complained to the BBC for using Richard Holloway, the former leader of the Episcopal Church, to present an Easter programme. Another cranky organisation of religionists shocked Aberdeen's Evening Express with their claim that the city was "the most ungodly city in Britain". Jesus Revolution 2002 planned to bring up to 4,000 Christians to the city for a rally between June 14 and July 28 in a rally backed by US evangelical group Somebody Cares America that is said to cost in the region of GBP300,000 to stage. The group's glossy publicity material claimed: "At the request of the Lord Provost, every park will become the venue of ongoing children's festivals ministering to every child in the city". This was nonsense. Aberdeen's Lord Provost Margaret Smith had given no such support. The organisation also sent letters to head teachers asking if they could visit schools without first seeking permission from the education authority. The group's website says: "The doors of the schools in Aberdeen are opening. Join us as we implement a strategy to present the gospel to every school-aged child in Aberdeen". Youngsters are their primary focus. Brian Taylor, of the Deeside Christian Fellowship believes their TV advert, which brands Aberdeen, as 'ungodly', will be seen by millions. They also plan to knock on every door in Aberdeen. Every year the Sunday Times compiles a list of Britain's richest. For the first time the list included those who had been the most generous. Guess who won? Donating a sum equivalent to 41% of his assets to charity especially Christian ones - was Brian Souter! But how does the Sunday Times know how Souter disposed of his money in private? He doesn't talk about it. The list excluded, not only bank accounts but also small shareholdings in private equity portfolios. I wonder how generous his low pad bus and train drivers would say he is? Many have been forced into taking industrial action over pay. As Melanie Reid acidly remarked in The Herald: "In the fairytale world of the rich list, of course, there is no ruthlessness index". Glasgow has left prostitution to the mercy of dinosaurs. Morality-councillors like Jim Coleman; busybodies who spend years brushing it under the carpet until it is exposed by a string of murders, drugs, crime, violence and the finger-pointing morality of sections of the Scottish press. With sex workers rounded up and arrested on the streets of Glasgow, I remember watching Jim 'call me Mary Whitehouse' Coleman on television bumbling on about Glasgow not having a problem with prostitution before one female sex worker after another was murdered. The sexually repressed Sunday Mail echoed his sentiments. Reporter Derek Alexander found the night manager of the Brunswick Hotel "rakes in a fortune" by hiring out rooms to men who took back sex workers. Unfortunately though, in this particular case, an undercover Sunday Mail reporter. People in furry, pink slippers gasped in horror as they read what was lining their cat's litter tray. "When the hotel bar closes and respectable guests are tucked up in bed, (Andy Wilson) transforms the Brunswick into a hotbed of vice". Rather than exposing sex workers and their clients to the cold, enterprising Andy "lines his pockets" - if I could use the Sunday Mail's turn of phrase - and offered them a bed. Of course, the undercover reporter had to "decline what was on offer"; but then they always do when they're on the job, before he "asked if he could take photographs of the 21-year-old vice girl instead". All in a day's work, I suppose, "to show how prostitutes get the run of the hotel after dark". A list of some of the Brunswick's impressive clients was presented with the warning: "They will all be shocked at Wilson's seedy activities", before the Sunday Mail added: "The Brunswick is also a popular venue for gay tourists attracted by the gay haunts in the Merchant City". One day Glasgow will grow up! But if there are any liberal councillors or journalists out there, please speak up! And finally, one did. In The Scotsman of all places. Bored with the anally retentive drivel of reporter Hamish Macdonell, James Doherty's piece on education officials of Glasgow Council's decision to ban nude life art classes offered by the Royal Academy of Art came as something of a surprise and was a credit to the newspaper. Yes, believe it or not, what has otherwise been a pre-requisite for entrance into most art colleges, the students' subjects have been ordered to slip into leotards! Ken Corsar, the city's director of education was responsible for the decision. A council spokesman claimed they hadn't time to discuss this with parents and teachers, which is, of course, an insult to their professionalism. Even Colette Douglas Home in the Scottish Daily Mail confessed: "Not since my convent school have I met such prudery. Back then my sister's art book sported Michelangelo's David in shorts". In the same paper, Allan Massie, not usually given to commenting on questions of morality, compiled a whole essay in defence of the nude that ran much along the same lines as those in a defence of homosexuality, drawing on ancient and historic examples. News that a Glasgow court defined a lesbian couple as a 'family' - "Anger after lesbians win 'family' rights" (Scottish Daily Mail) - was never likely to escape the wrath of the moral press-hounds. The same paper noted that the landmark legal ruling "enraged morality campaigners" which only turned out to be that doyen of all things moral: Valerie Riches of the militant Family and Youth Concern and a spokesman for the Catholic Church who ignored any authentic research to the contrary to declare: "Children brought up by both biological parents, who are married, are most likely to prosper". The Scottish Daily Mail leader warned of a "nightmare world we could be entering by allowing such irresponsible dabbling with the very stuff of human life". They trawled the world and found an American lesbian couple who had gone to "extraordinary lengths" to have a deaf child. "They have even denied him a hearing aid"; the Mail sneered. "For that's exactly what the twisted couple - a pair of graduate lesbians - intended", warned the Scottish News of the World, adding: "His warped parents are tickled pink". Old Mother (Joan) Burnie in the Daily Record gasped: "And if this repulsive pair's kids grow up heterosexual, what are they going to do about that - disown them?" On the wider issue of embryo research and cloning, in Scotland on Sunday, Gerald Warner thundered: "Saints cannot be manufactured in test-tubes, nor Satan be genetically modified. Christian believers will trust in divine providence to frustrate the Luciferian ambition of scientists to usurp the prerogatives of God". Archbishop Mario Conti was given space in the Sunday Herald to regurgitate the Catholic's holed argument on gay parenting, claiming that such an extension to parental rights "demeans the natural basis of parenthood, a basis that must remain the norm". Describing gay parents as fickle, selfish and incapable of marriage ignores not only current research on gay parenting, but also the contribution of the Catholic Church in making such an institution so unpopular with homosexuals. As for the American lesbian couple, there are many conditions whereby, to help make life easier for those living with them, they are 'normalised'. However much you may think this might've been a step too far, the lesbian couple firmly believed their child would benefit from the enhanced sense of smell, touch and sight they ardently believed they had been blessed with. That should have been the issue, and not the fact they were lesbians. Simon Houston in the Daily Record suggests: "With the exception of a few dinosaurs who still think it's funny to poke fun at gays and talk about 'faggots', Britain has largely moved into the 21st century on the gay issue. In fact, it's not really an issue at all" So what century does that leave the Daily Record then, which, until only a few weeks ago, still managed to make it very much an issue when it banned gays, lesbians, bisexuals and people of transgender from advertising for partners in amongst its personal ads? After a five-years of pushing, (editor Peter Cox promised me he would look into this soon after he took over as editor), the Scottish Media Monitor has achieved another small victory. Now men can seek men and women can seek women. What is the world coming too, eh? The Daily Record's manufactured outrage was found hanging around a bus stop on the way to Easterhouse watching passing buses carrying ads for Legs & Co, a lap-dancing club. "Mothers of young children and elderly people have branded the images offensive and claim they will stop using the buses unless the advert is removed". The women were no less clothed than the average holiday ad, but one mother, who understandably didn't want to be named - I would imagine in case her own prudery or membership of some militant religious organisation be revealed - shored up the Record's froth with the comment: "The whole bus is covered in pictures of half-naked women. What kind of effect is it having on children who see it every day? I have had my seven-year-old son asking me embarrassing questions. The other day he asked me what lap-dancing is. It is just not on. I speak to lots of parents who are just as annoyed". Garry Otton's book SEXUAL FASCISM is published by Ganymede Books priced GBP8.99. garry@scottishmediamonitor.com You can read Scotland's newspapers today and everyday online. The Scottish Media Monitor: http://www.scottishmediamonitor.com. cut it out! * A Daily Record headline after Boy George grabbed a photographer: "Handbags at dawn". * Where has Scotland on Sunday's homophobic Gerald Warner been hanging around lately? "In the lavatories even of quite good clubs nowadays one sometimes hears the waspish buzz of a zip-fastener". * Gerald Warner on what he describes as the "destruction of femininity" in Scotland on Sunday: "Now is the time of year when, a generation ago, the streets began to brighten with girls and women in colourful summer frocks Men could claim little credit for this annual renaissance; but at least they looked like men, rather then mobile Oxfam parcels, and carried themselves with some dignity". * Conservative Katie Grant in The Scotsman: "Grief is so much better expressed through dignified dress and silence than through leisure clothes and wailing". * Old Mother Burnie exercising her wisdom in the Daily Record: "I could be wrong - according to my 'fans', I always am - but I doubt most men are obsessed with feet. Maybe a few, but by no means the majority". * While believing Pop idol winner Will Young should have been more honest, Big Brother winner, Brian Dowling had Simon Houston in the Daily Record chuckling: "It was the hilarious in-your-face way he dealt with his sexuality which appealed to so many viewers, and females in particular. Brian was as camp as a row of pink tents - and all the girlies loved him". Does he consider it necessary to declare his sexuality? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Inbhir Nis/Inverness ==================== Hello and welcome - I'm your new voice of the North: David. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my predecessor, Kuddles, for his interesting views on the scene in Inverness and the Highlands. What's happening in Inverness? Well, we are still a very small scene, but I can see it is going from strength to strength with a lot of new faces in Sleepers on Friday and Saturday nights. Can't really say a lot for the venue itself, but Stewart and the staff are very friendly and will give you any information that you may require. The disco and karaoke are still popular, just a shame we dont have any good singers to make it more interesting and the DJ really could do with updating his music collection. The city has recently lost a gay friendly bar, One + One, which has re-opened as a beautiful tapas bar/restaurant. If you are planning a visit to the city and are looking for information, you can E-mail me at the address below or Ronald at Reach Out Highland. Talking of ROH, they still hold the Youth Groups on the first Wednesday and third Friday of each month and the Gay Mens Group on the fourth Wednesday of each month. The whole team at ROH are working very hard at the moment helping Pride Scotland. Dates to remember: 10th May Fundraising party with a lot of fascinating fundraising events (for more details, E-mail: ronald@reachout.demon.co.uk). 15th June is the Pride Party in Sleepers Bar. This is a themed event, the theme being MOVIES and MOVIESTARS, giving you all the chance to dress up as your favourite star. So, get those glad rags on, girls! 17th June is a Focus Day down on the lawns of Eden Court Theatre. This will consist of The Pricilla Performing Bus which is going round the country at the moment and there are going to be some short Lesbian and Gay films showing in the cinema. If you are intrested in helping out with the party, please get in touch with Pride Scotland who are looking for Drag Queens/Kings, performers, cabaret acts and folk who want to be generally involved with Pride. The scene here are losing a very dear friend, Greg, and a very talented make up artist to Frasers in Glasgow. So, beware Glasgow and if you are in the store look out for him. When were you cruised last? When did you last go cruising? Well, I would try out your local Tesco: the amount of queens I have seen working and shopping there. Also North Kessock picnic area and toilets are still popular but the police are keeping an eye on things, so be careful! As we are now coming into the summer season, we will soon be getting an influx of tourists to cheer us up! OK, that's about it from me. I hope you find this information interesting. If you have any comments please let me know. See you out and about. David x E-mail: dwill88@hotmail.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dun-deagh/Dundee ================ The club was heaving recently for the welcome return of the Mr Gay UK competition. Where were they last year? I heard that the club boss wouldn't pay the money for it! Still, all that was forgotten when the tills were jangling in Charlie's, Brooklyn and Liberty. The contestants were a bit slow to come forward and, as predicted in this column, they were persuaded by some free alcohol At least they got served quickly. A few customers were not happy at waiting for service while the barmen took part in the line up. The sight. of flesh was mostly enjoyable and it was difficult to agree an obvious winner. Every customer got a vote and some of Charlie's customers voted for a lesbian! Third place went to Euan the barman, second place to a hunk Rob from Glasgow (who got my vote) and the winner was Kevin H. This just goes to show that it pays to canvas for votes in the loo! The audience were delighted when Rob, the second place guy, stripped off to show his manhood which regrettably appeared to be suffering from stagefright. Also out of his depth was the English presenter - contestants and voters had difficulty in understanding his accent. So next year we'll be back to Brian in his kilt probably. (Nice legs shame about the face!) Next year barman Euan will have to take part in Edinburgh as he is no longer commuting to Leith Docks to work. Having shagged all available men in Dundee he is looking for fresh talent. There are some dogs in Auld Reekie too, so perhaps he'll come back for the sheep in Kirrie one day. Strangely we hear no tails of Brian begging him to stay. I reckon there might be a story in that Of course we don't do investigative journalism at ScotsGay's Dundee Outpost so you can make it up for yourself. The slowest ever redecoration of a Dundee pub continues at Brooklyn. Whilst I will confess to not having viewed the new colours, I hear it's developing into a much appreciated atmosphere. The venue is getting more trade from the competition and the straight pubs. The quiz nights have had an element of audience participation added. Charlies has also been getting a bit of work done and the new wood cladding at the entrance is awaiting a paint or varnish. Nobody will be allowed to pin up posters on it, which is a shame because some of them were very informative. Clearly the stress of getting this work done is getting to Charlie as he recently launched into a verbal attack on Libs bouncer Sarah when she asked him to finish his drink at the end of the night. He was going to have her sacked and she was barred from his 'shop' - well that was until he sobered up and realized the implications! Another reason why old men shouldn't drink too much. Much speculation on the Dundee scene when Kerry turned up for work with a pair of 'keekers' (that's black eyes). We thought about running a competition for the most exciting story. Prime suspects were, of course, her many ex's, former pub owner Karen Morris and a certain member of staff in the pub. The rather weak excuse was that the damage was done at the footie. Must have been a very high ball then! I was looking forward to the singer Tina Cousins and was not disappointed by her performance although the singing was a bit weak at times. She got those who could see her really jumping and the shouts and cheers masked the occasional off note. It's great to get the bigger name acts to Dundee and I think Brian did well getting her. For a pound extra, it was worth it - if only to see her Manager! Tickets for the much awaited Atomic Kitten show at Liberty after Pride on Saturday 22nd June are to go on sale to regulars of Liberty on the lst of May, we hear. They will cost a tenner which is a lot of money to some. I presume they are not cheap to stage and it's brilliant to get the biggest name I have ever heard of at Liberty. It's a bit confusing as the much heralded refurb of the club is to be done before then so it doesn't sound too involved. My beloved Editor has been told that gay nights will be run on the top floor of the building while Libs is done up. They have made arrangements so that we can still drink and party till the usual time. With Euan leaving the I.iberty squad, the casting couch re-opens. Hot contenders are the barstaff from Charlies who like the sound of five pounds per hour. Also queuing up are former barstaff who appear to be wasting their time. Never cross Madame Grumpy and expect her to forget. Shafted --------------------------------------------------------------------- Films ===== by Malcolm Epstein Films to know about ------------------- A French movie worth your valuable time and money is "The Closet" (l5) that dares to have a leading man, Daniel Auteuil, who admits he is so boring that his wife has left him and his 17 year old son constantly avoids him. Employers at his accountancy job are making him redundant and his neighbour, a retired corporate psychologist, has an unusual idea to solve his problems - pretend to everyone at work that he is gay. Amazingly his bosses now feel he has become essential to the company and want him to represent them in a gay pride parade that is being covered by TV news. His son sees him on TV and decides he is not a bore at all and wants to spend time with him. So do the girls in his office. It is a clever comedy. June is worth waiting for to see "Crush " (15) with Kenny Doughty, a young man who will put spring in your step as he is the most desireable new face in British movies. Andie MacDowell is headmistress in a school in a small English town who, once a week, meets two old friends for an evening of gin, chocolate and cigarettes. Imelda Staunton is a police inspector and Anna Chancellor the most successful local doctor. But when Andie confesses she has started having an affair with 25 year old Kenny, 17 years her junior, the two friends start persuading her it is a hopeless relationship. They become even more determined to break up the romance when Andie announces she is marrying him. "Crush" is three quarters of a delightful movie because writer and director John McKay has cast it perfectly. His judgement falters on the script before the end over a plotline I wont tell you about. Nevertheless I loved most of "Crush" and while studying Kenny Doughty you will too. Bruce Webber, whose underwear advertising pictures of fantastic guys have created great interest in male sexuality for many years, has now directed a documentary and "Chop Suey" that tours the country from June as part of the Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. Part of it includes his fixation with a 16 year old wrestler, Peter Johnson, whom he photographed constantly for four years, and it includes nude shots of Jan-Michael Vincent in the 70's and a section on singer Frances Faye told by her lesbian lover of 30 years, Terri Shepherd. Its 98 minutes has many beautiful frames. Bruce will forever be known for bringing great sex appeal to American menswear pictures as Mike Arlen is known here for the glorification of the male erection. As I was never a fan of Jim Carrey pulling all those ridiculous faces I was relieved to see him in an intelligent story "The Majestic" (PG) where his considerable good looks are not twisted in any humorous way. Here he is a Hollywood script writer who in 1951 is unlucky enough to be caught up in the American persecution of anyone who has had any contact with Communism. On a stormy night his car swerves off an unstable bridge. When he gains consciousness he is laying on a river bank close to a town where he appears to be a double for a local hero who had been in the army and went missing in the war. Because of memory loss he goes with their needs although he keeps assuring them he has no memory of that town before. It may not please Carrey fans who loved all his comic faces, but I was impressed. Current Releases ---------------- The Metro Tartan film company are incensed with rage as the British Board of Film Censors insisted on an eleven second cut from their film "The Pornographer" (18). The director Bertrand Bonello was surprised and upset. "The film has been sold in over twelve countries and this is the first time such a thing happens." However, it still has a sequence when a splendid young man with a mind blowing erection is treating a lady with the respect she deserves. If you enjoy tension and torment you must see "Panic Room" (l5) that is the big box office film in the States right now. Wealthy divorced Jodie Foster has moved with her daughter into a luxurious New York house that even has a security room to escape into if burglars ever happen. Soon after moving in the worst happens on a stormy night when three burglars break in unaware the new residents have arrived. "Panic Room" is your type of movie if you can bear having your nerves shattered. Oscar winning Czech director Jan Sverak of "Kolya" now gives us "Dark Blue World" (l2) about two Czech pilots who escape Nazi occupied Czechoslavakia to reach England at the beginning of the war to join the RAF and fight in the Battle of Britain. As if they don't have enough to worry about two attractive Czech airmen fall out when they both fancy Tara Fitzgerald. Love, we are told, can make the best friends fall out. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Books ===== by Dirk Kriete Bears on Bears Ron Jackson Suresha Alyson GBP10.99 I once knew a Bear. He is a lovely man, kind, gentle, artistic, softly spoken, but a different man when he's on the scene. I found it quite remarkable to witness the change in personality in this guy and ever since I've had a bit of a hard time coming to terms with what people call Bears on the scene. When this book arrived I wasn't all that bothered about reading it and it ended up like so many books that can be read in portions so to say on the loo. But I soon became engrossed in this set of lively interviews, made possible largely by the Internet and its online interactions. This book brings together 57 contributors from all over the world and Bears and Bear-lovers alike describe themselves, their community, their sense of masculinity and most of them have a lovely sense of humour. These interviews, although thought-provoking are never dull or boring. In fact, you can just see these men, often large and hairy and who don't give a damn about what fashion is currently "in" having a good old chuckle about themselves and about you, the reader of these interviews. Definitely worth a read and I'm sure a chuckle. Hardball for Billy Budd Richard Dann GLB GBP12.99 This is an odd one I hated sports when I was at school, and I still do I can't bear pain of any kind and cannot understand how anybody can possibly derive pleasure from it The way the Americans have butchered the English language is abhorrent to me (and I am German!) And then this book arrives through the mail, American, sports and sado-masochism all rolled into one. Do you think I might have anything good to say about this book? Well, the sex is good. Obsessions Joseph Mills MPG GBP9.95 Now this is more my cup of tea, so to speak. A true Celtic wordsmith, Scottish novelist Joseph Mills has previously entertained us with the excellent "The Mammoth Book of Gay Short Stories" and more recently the equally highly readable "The Mainstream Book of Scottish Gay Writing", both of which I've had the pleasure to review in earlier editions of ScotsGay. These short stories are excellent, full of charm and wit and a sense of the unusual, the out of the ordinary, the surprising. Each story is so very different from it's predecessor that you could be forgiven for thinking that they might have been crafted by different authors. Not so, in this book Joseph Mills has pulled out all the stops, easily his best book yet. So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and get a copy, I promise you won't regret it. Flat Mark Macdonald Arsenal Pulp Press GBP7.99 Do you remember that movie, where someone is spying on this couple, I think the "someone" was played by Gene Hackman, or that more recent movie "Enemy of the State" well, this book in a strange way reminded me of those movies, dark, grey city landscapes, sinister happenings, a feeling of all pervading paranoia. A very strange book, it's captivating and engrossing at the same time. There are moments of sheer wit and brilliance buried in this treasure of a first novel by this young Canadian writer and I for one look forward to see the next offering by this obviously very talented new writer on the block. by Andy Martin D.O.C. Lust Letters Paul Beckford and Kevin Dax Green Candy GBP9.99 This book documents the E-mail romance of Kevin and Paul and it is an honest account of the sexual lives of two gay men as they cruise the wild California scene of the late 1990s, from San Fran to LA and everywhere in between. The erotic haunts from underground sex clubs and bathhouses. Quite well written. Out Of This World Jack Dickson Millivres Prowler Group GBP7.95 WOW!!!!!!!. That is exactly what I thought when I read the first story in this book, I was left breathless. In just over four and a half pages this collection of stories sold itself to me, and I read on. Jack Dickson is a brilliant writer and he can get into your mind and push all the right buttons. He can and does seem to take your mind into this lucid state where you become one with the events of the story. A truly great story teller and a brilliant head fuck Friction Volume 5 - Best gay erotic fiction edited by Jesse Grant and Austin Foxxe Alyson GBP11.99 A wonderful collection of sexual and erotic stories, written and presented well, a very good read. Grab the oil and and let's begin. by Brother Bimbo Just Between Us Greg Gorman Arena Editions GBP36.50 This photographic study of one rather attractive model has done the rounds of the Convent, and so far two gay men, one bisexual man, one bisexual woman and one straight woman have tried to steal it! Yes, it's expensive, but it's a hardback and hours of entertainment are guaranteed. Remember - wanking is extremely safe sex, just stock up on the lube before you begin. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Arts ==== by Martin Powell Helmet Paines Plough and Traverse Theatre Company Tron Theatre, Glasgow 5-9 June 8pm I was somewhat concerned on taking my seat at what I was letting myself in for. A play (at least I thought it was going to be a play), about computer games. I didn't feel any better looking at what confronted me on stage. A large white structure. Was it a cinema screen or an attempt to construct a proscenium arch in the space? However the last show I saw involving Paines Plough was superb and The Traverse do not have a reputation for churning out duds. We started with titles being projected on the screen, then the screen/curtain lifted to reveal a computer game shop. We meet Sal Kapoor (Ameet Chana), the shop owner, and Roddy the Helmet (Tommy Mulins), a not particularly bright computer games fanatic. We start to learn about their lives and their relationship with each other, then something strange happens. The action stops and we start repeating an earlier section. What is going on? Eventually the penny dropped. We are watching a play and a computer game. We follow them through each level seeing their relationship develop with each "life". However the superb part of this is the way that subtle differences can result in dramatically different outcomes. Chaos theory came to mind. This is emphasised by meters projected onto the sides of the screen showing how much power each player/character has left, although as I had gone along with the mindset of play rather than computer game, it took me some time to realise this. Attempting this kind of thing can be risky. Elaborate digital animation, two actors on stage for 80 minutes, a non-linear plot, and so forth. However when you take the award winning writer Douglas Maxwell, thoughtful direction by John Tiffany, great acting, and an elaborate set that looked as though it cost a fortune you can make it work. A truly innovative work that is unlike any I have seen before. Brilliant, absolutely fucking brilliant. Go see. martinp@drink.demon.co.uk by Roy Isserlis Constraint, Patti McGonigal, March 28 to April 9th, Bongo Club, New Street, Edinburgh Some readers will have already come across Patti's work at the Nexus Cafe, and the temporary gallery in front of it in Broughton Street. In fact one patron left a message for Patti that she would like to be painted after seeing the previous work and is now hanging opposite the picture that captivated her. This seems to be the constraint in question. There are no ropes, stocks or pillory in these beautiful paintings, the fetish is the space created by the various headgear constraining the subjects in their own fantasies. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Freebies ======== by Mona We've got 4 VHS copies to give away of Entertainment on Video's latest release, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" It's a rock musical comedy that is most definately not your run-of-the mill Hollywood flick. The songs featured are fairly average, it's got the occasional funny moments; you just know that a sex change operation in 1960's East Berlin will go horribly wrong. Bizarre, amusing and watchworthy. The video is available to buy from 15th April, but, if you send us a postcard with your name and address, we'll put it in the hat for our free draw. Send to: Hedwig Video, ScotsGay, PO Box 666, Edinburgh. First Time had a moderately agreeable squad of young Eastern European guys doing things with each other. They could all do with a more nourishing diet and it would be nice if their willies were just a little bit stiffer too - especially after they've been being sucked off for five minutes! But some entertaining up the bottom stuff in between the soft-ons. Playing for Keeps had a slightly older crowd of USAnians giving each other the business. Nice hard dicks dropping straight out of trousers and no time wasting. How unlike the home life of this queen. Over to Germany for Oil Change where the guys were again slightly more mature, the Harley Davidson was being polished up to remove white sticky stuff and somebody had left a dildo in the workshop vice. It was nothing like that when I last went for an MOT! Another roll of Andrex, please! Or pass me a large puppy. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- International News from Rex Wockner =================================== Gay activists address UN ------------------------ Indian gay activist Aditya Bondyopadhyay addressed the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in Geneva on April 8th detailing anti-gay discrimination, harassment, arrests, beatings, torture, blackmail, extortion and rape in his native land. Much of the abuse is carried out by police, the judiciary and other state institutions, he said. High-ranking UN officials made an historic appearance at the briefing, affirming the organization's commitment to sexual rights, activists said. Representatives also spoke from some of the groups that sponsored the briefing -- the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission, the International Lesbian and Gay Association, the International Lesbian and Gay Law Association, Switzerland's Pink Cross, the World Organization Against Torture, Amnesty International, and the International Service for Human Rights. Among much else, Bondyopadhyay presented details on the "Lucknow 4" case, in which four HIV-prevention workers were charged with conspiring to commit "unnatural sexual acts" under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and were detained without bail for from 45 days to seven months. "The arrested four were beaten, denied food, forced to drink sewer water, abused regularly and refused treatment when they got sick," Bondyopadhyay said. "One of the arrested had his glasses stamped on and broken and had to spend 45 days' incarceration with impaired vision." Bondyopadhyay's speech is online at http://www.iglhrc.org/world/s_asia/India2002Apr_2.html Dutch gays support anti-immigrant politician -------------------------------------------- Readers of the Dutch gay magazine De Gay Krant favour maverick gay politician Pim Fortuyn in the May 15th national election, a survey found. Twenty-three percent of the readers support Fortuyn's party, Lijst Fortuyn, compared with 20 percent who favour the Liberal party, which polled in second place. Fortuyn was thrown out of the national party Liveable Netherlands in February after he made anti-Muslim statements. He then formed Lijst Fortuyn. In March, his local party, Liveable Rotterdam, captured 37 percent of that city's council seats. Fortuyn and his followers are particularly upset over the anti-gay and conservative social views of Muslim immigrants. "I would simply say, no more Muslims can come in!" Fortuyn said. "Islam is... simply a backward culture." Fortuyn bristles, however, when called a right-winger. "I find it intolerable that I am being compared with statesmen such as [Joerg] Haider and [Jean-Marie] Le Pen," he said on April 8th, referring to right-wing politicians in Austria and France. "My policies are multi-ethnic and certainly not racist." Dutch Muslim clerics were threatened with criminal prosecution last year for calling homosexuality a "shameless," "scandalous," "intolerable" "sickness" that "could destroy society." There are about 800,000 Muslims in The Netherlands, many from Morocco and Turkey. They are about five percent of the population. Fortuyn is 54, shaves his head, smokes cigars and travels in a luxury car with his dogs. His Web site says: "His lifestyle is noble, his thinking utterly non-conformist, he is a romantic at heart. Literature and ideals, fury and doubt, hedonism and compassion: Pim Fortuyn is a multi-cultural country all by himself. Aesthete and grass-roots democrat. Privileged child and desperado. Dadaist with a gladiator's head. Rebel with a cause." IRISH GAYS STUDIED ------------------ A new study of Irish gay men has found that one in five had more than 16 sexual partners in the past year and 3 percent had more than 51 partners. The average number of sexual partners was five. The men met at gay bars, bathhouses, social clubs, private parties, cruising spots, public toilets and on the Internet. Eight and a half percent of the gay men had sex with a woman in the past year. Half of the men surveyed had a regular male sexual partner and half of that group had been partnered for more than two years. There were 1,290 valid responses to the survey, which was conducted by the Gay Health Network and Sigma UK. Among other findings: 41.5 percent of the respondents had unprotected sex in the past year and 10 percent wished they were not gay. Sixty percent had taken an HIV test. Five percent of that group had tested positive and 93 percent negative. AIDS IS OUT OF CONTROL IN RUSSIA -------------------------------- Russia has the world's fastest-growing HIV rate, UN AIDS chief Peter Piot has told the Moscow Times. "The situation in Russia and the CIS [12 former Soviet republics] is rapidly getting out of control," Piot said. "New infections double each year." He said needle-sharing causes most infections but "an increasing number are being infected through sexual activity." NEWFOUNDLAND OKS GAY ADOPTION ----------------------------- The Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador has legalized adoption by gay couples. The new laws will take effect in June. "We need a great variety of potential families and I think taking applications from anyone who is interested is the best way to find those families," Judith Grove, executive director of the Adoption Council of Canada, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. NIGERIAN STUDENT BEATEN TO DEATH -------------------------------- Fourteen high-school students at Birnin Kudu College in the Nigerian state of Jigawa have been arrested for beating to death a fellow student they believed was gay. Inuwa Yakubu was dragged from his bed and beaten until he lost consciousness. He later came to and crawled back to his bed, where he died, the African Eye News Service reported. The suspects are being held in Dutse, the state capital. SEX-CHANGE SURGERY COMMON IN CHINA ---------------------------------- There have been more than 1,000 sex-change operations in China since the first one was performed in 1986, according to the Xinhua news agency. "The fact is, nowadays Chinese people have become more tolerant of transsexuals," the news service said. Official estimates place the transsexual population at about 400,000. The agency said having a sex-change operation means transsexuals have "realized their life-time dream to live as their real selves." Before surgery, an individual must undergo a psychological exam "to make sure that the change will not adversely affect his or her life or mental health." A candidate must also have permission from his or her family and employer, and from "public-security authorities." CANADIAN MP MAKES ANTI-GAY REMARK --------------------------------- Canadian Alliance party Member of Parliament Cheryl Gallant, who represents the Ontario riding of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, made a remark in the House of Commons on April 10th that is being called anti-gay. During an argument between former Alliance leader Stockwell Day, Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham and others, Gallant reportedly shouted to Graham, "Ask your boyfriend!" Canadian Alliance leader Stephen Harper later ordered Gallant to apologize, according to news reports. Speaking on the Commons floor on April 16th, Gallant said: "Last Wednesday in this house, I made a remark that, on reflection, was inappropriate and that I regret making. If anyone was offended by the remark, I offer my sincere apologies." ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTSGAY VOICE FOR PERSONALS ============================ (We regret that this service is only available within the UK) To reply to ScotsGay Voice Ads, phone 09068 556613 (calls charged at 60p per minute) and use the number at the end of the ad. Hi, I'm in my late sixties, affectionate, outgoing, a bit of an intellectual and comfortably retired here in Scotland in Clydebank near Glasgow. I am very relaxed about my age and about being gay and am out to all family and friends. I am around 6'4" and 15 stones. I lived with a much younger guy for about 26 years, but we agreed to split up a few years back. We grew further apart rather than closer together as the years went by. Sad, but it happens. I am happy enough but miss the constant companionship of a younger man. I hate it when I come home after a short or long absence and nothing has changed or been moved; that is the essence of loneliness to me, having no-one to share your space. The big things in life, like vacations or visiting beautiful places together count of course, and bring treasured memories, but it is the day to day simple intimacies and sharing of simple things like meals or a decent TV programme, or a video or CD, even household chores, that are the essence! of a loving relationship. That is what I am looking for. I want a companion who I can love, help and share things with. You can be any race colour or creed; it does not matter much to me, though I do like Orientals a lot. But you must be your own man and prepared to make your own way in life with any help I can give you. Mail me if you are at all interested. I will reply to anyone who says a little about himself. Hugs, Val. Box SG45019. Gay Student Glasgow student, 23, looking for a nice guy to go for a drink with, not just looking for a one night stand. 5'11", blond hair, brown eyes, slightly stocky build.
