Have a look at mine and get back to me if you think we might be compatible. > Mate. Never in a million years would we be compatible!! I think you seriously have delusions of grandeur!! Look at someone your own age and stop trying to hit on young guys like myself. The myth that only young guys are attractive is a powerful one in what passes for gay culture. And it's a myth which throws up many contradictions. The truth is that we all have our own personal ideas of who we find attractive and it's not something which is really open to any form of rational debate. Take my boyfriend (no, that's not an offer - he's perfectly capable of making his own): his tastes in men have always tended towards the older and more hairy. For him, Sean Connery is still phwoar material. For my part, Jason Connery used to be more my type (before the ravages of time made him resemble his father). For older people who are into younger, the sort of Internet exchange described above is a regular occurence. It's not just the younger person saying "Sorry. Not my type". It's usually a violent outpouring of prejudice against older people and an assertion that older people just shouldn't want to have sex with younger people. Younger guys into older guys suffer from considerable pressure from their contemporaries too. They are often told that they are being taken advantage of and that their relationships are clearly not freely entered into (or, at the very least, are only entered into because of a perceived financial advantage). None of which is very helpful. As gay people, many of us have suffered from the heterosexual hegemony which insists that homosexual relationships are to be deprecated. Have we not learned from this that we shouldn't judge the relationships of others? Ultimately, there is somebody to suit everybody out there. It's just a matter of finding them. And, when you do, enjoy it whilst it lasts and don't worry what anybody else has to say. After all, they're probably just jealous that they haven't found their Mr Right or Mr Right Now! John Hein E-mail: editorial@scotsgay.co.uk -------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS ==== VOLUNTEERS RUB EACH OTHER UP THE RIGHT WAY IN SMALL OFFICE Gay Men's Health is returning to normal after an arson attack at their Union Street offices in Edinburgh on September 30th. Firefighters doused the flames quickly but patient records and computers were destroyed and there was extensive smoke and water damage. "The whole room looked like a volcano has erupted," said Bruce Fraser, GMH's chief executive. "The attack caused a lot of damage. It wasn't just the fire, but of course all the water damage from the fire brigade, who managed to put out the fire so quickly. With staff crammed into a few small rooms and files in different areas it has been difficult. It has meant that we have had to spend a lot of time dealing with contractors for decorators, fumigators, carpet people - the list is endless, and of course insurance companies. "One thing I think the staff at Gay Men's Health can be truly proud of is the way they have refused to allow this attack to disrupt their work in any way. Not one counselling appointment has been cancelled, not one leaflet or poster delayed. All of the work has gone on regardless. That is simply because staff have worked flat out to ensure every project, whether the testing barriers project or peer education have come first. "There is anger about the fact that a charity could be targeted in this way, but GMH has shown that it would take a lot to allow it to interrupt the important work that its volunteers undertake within the community. EQUALITY NEWS The UK Government has launched the next steps in its consultation on changes to GB equality law. Two consultation documents have been published. One is on proposed laws to ban discrimination in employment, on grounds of sexual orientation and religion (from Dec 2003), and on grounds of age (from 2006). The other is on proposals for a Single Equality Body to promote equality on grounds of age, disability, gender, race, religion and sexual orientation, from 2006. The Equality Network is to put a page on their website at http://www.equality-network.org/on the implications of these proposals, and on issues you might want to consider raising in response to either of the consultations, in early November. In the meantime, here is an outline of the proposals. The first consultation is on detailed proposals to implement the EU Employment Directive (under article 13 of the EU Treaty). This will result in a ban on discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and religion, in employment and in vocational training, from Dec 1st 2003. Discrimination on grounds of age will also be banned, but not until 2006. You can find details of this consultation at: http://www.dti.gov.uk/er/equality/ On that page is the full consultation document "Equality and Diversity: The Way Ahead", a summary of it, and details of the draft legislation proposed. The Government ran an earlier consultation on these matters at the start of this year, and details are at: http://www.equality-network.org/briefings/article13.shtml The questions in the new consultation document are very specific, although responses need not be limited to the questions asked. The deadline for responses is 24th Jan 2003. Aspects of the detailed proposals which relate to some of the issues raised by LGBT groups earlier this year are: The new law will protect people on grounds of sexual orientation or perceived or presumed sexual orientation - people will not have to out themselves to obtain justice. The definition of unlawful harassment at work has been improved to take into account the perception of the victim in deciding whether acts constitute harassment. This should help ensure that homophobic harassment is made unlawful even though the "average" heterosexual person might not think it was offensive. The new law should ensure that employers have to treat same-sex partners of employees the same as unmarried mixed-sex partners, in providing any benefits including pension benefits. However, they will still be able lawfully to provide extra benefits to married partners that are not available to unmarried mixed-sex or same-sex partners. The new legislation only covers employment and vocational training. It will remain lawful to discriminate against people on grounds of their sexual orientation or religion in the supply of goods and services. The Government has rejected calls to give powers in the short term to a statutory body such as the Equal Opportunities Commission to help advise on and enforce the new legislation. However, people discriminated against will be able to go to the Employment Tribunal to obtain a remedy, perhaps with the advice/support of their union or of a range of voluntary organisations. In the longer term (from 2006 onwards), the Government is considering proposals for a new statutory Single Equality Body to promote and help enforce the new legislation (see below). The exception from the new laws which allows an organisation with religious ethos (eg a faith-based school or social work organisation) to discriminate in employing people has been somewhat clarified. Under the proposals, such an organisation will be allowed discriminate on grounds of religion in employing someone, if they can show that a particular religion is a genuine requirement for the job. They (like any other employer) can only discriminate on other grounds (including sexual orientation) if they can prove that a particular characteristic, such as a particular sexual orientation, is a genuine and determining requirement for the job. "Determining" means the employer would have to prove that the requirement is a decisive factor in employing for the post. It is not yet clear what scope in practice that will give to religious organisations who want to discriminate against LGBT employees. The second consultation is on outline proposals for a statutory Single Equality Body, to promote equality from 2006 onwards. Details can be found at: http://www.womenandequalityunit.gov.uk/equality_body/introduction.htm This page includes the main consultation document "Equality and Diversity: Making it Happen". This is a broad consultation document with wide-ranging questions. The deadline for responses is 21st February 2003. Tim Hopkins E-mail: en@equality-network.org NEW LAD Picture caption: Adam Shipp is the Equality Network's Project Support Worker. His employment is funded by the Scottish Executive to promote consultation with the LGBT community. RIGHTS GROUP SLAMS MINISTER Outright Scotland has criticised the Scottish Executive Minister for Social Justice, Margaret Curran, as wilfully miss-reading research into domestic abuse against men to justify the Executive's discriminatory policies. Outright's spokesman on Community Safety, Keith Cowan, said, "One of the key findings of the report is that there are considerably fewer male victims of domestic abuse than female victims. I wonder who suggested that this was not the case and how much the Executive paid to establish this. For years our major criticism of Scottish Executive policy on the matter has been that their definition of "Domestic Abuse" is sexist as it sees men only as abusers and women only as victims. Given this definition it is hardly surprising that few men report abuse and that women who suffer abuse in same-sex relationships are ignored. We argue that domestic abuse should be seen as all abuse that takes place in domestic relationships and settings and so would include abuse of a partner of either sex, elder abuse, and abuse of other family members. We argue that all victims of such abuse are entitled to equal support and protection. We argue that the definition adopted by the Executive stands in the way of that support and protection because of the influence it has and the implications for funding. To treat a crime as irrelevant because of the sex of the perpetrator is immoral. To treat the victim of a crime as less in need of support because of their sex is immoral. More women suffer abuse by men than do men from women, men from men or women from women, nobody has ever suggested otherwise. But the Minister's claim that this means resources, training and support can ignore male victims and victims of same-sex abuse is downright offensive. Does this mean that the Scottish Executive policy is now to be that if you are a victim of a crime you will not receive any support unless large numbers of people suffer the same crime? We welcome the research findings that confirm what we have always said - that men can be victims of domestic abuse and that women can be abusers. But we are angry that, despite this finding, the Scottish Executive is happy to continue with the current sexist policy." WOOLY COMBINATIONS Edinburgh University researcher, Jamie Heckert, wants to find out about sexual orientation. He isn't interested in gay genes, though. 'I want to talk to people about their experiences,' says Heckert. Heckert is currently recruiting participants for his ongoing research project. He wants to talk with people in relationships with someone who has a different sexual orientation than they do. 'Many people consider themselves gay, bisexual or straight. I'm interested in these, as well as other "sexual orientations" like bi-curious, mostly straight, questioning, confused, variable, fag hag, etc. I am also looking for people whose sexuality has changed.' So far, he has talked to: a woman who used to consider herself bi, but now thinks of herself as straight; a straight identified man who fancies androgynous women; and several bisexual or queer women. He has also been in contact with a man who identifies as straight, with only one exception. He is, of course, also looking to talk to people who consider themselves simply lesbian, gay or straight. 'Basically, I want to talk with a wide variety of people about how well they fit into sexual orientation categories. How do they feel about labels? What sort of pressures have they experienced?' But why mixed relationships? 'Well, partly because no one else has done it. But mostly because I think having a partner with a different sexual orientation makes you think about these things a bit differently. Also, I can't just go up to random people on the street and ask them about their sexualities!' Heckert is preparing for a bit of a research road trip around Scotland and England this autumn, stopping off to do interviews wherever he can find people in "mixed relationships". There will also be a beer festival to celebrate the occasion. FIFE LGBT Community Action (Fife) is a small voluntary organisation which has recently gained recognition as a Scottish Charity. They're holding their "1st Birthday" celebrations on Tue 26th Nov from 7pm at 5 South Fergus Place, Kirkcaldy. Fancy dress is optional, party games compulsory but no alcohol is allowed on the premises. LICENCE BLUES Out of the Blue, the bijou shoppette underneath Blue Moon Cafe, has failed in its application for a sex shop licence. This is because the premises are sublet from the Blue Moon which already holds an alcohol licence. Meanwhile, the appeal against the licence for the new sauna in Edinburgh's Broughton Market has now been heard at the Sheriff Court but Sheriff Bell has still to make his ruling. SAUNA Spa-19 has raised over GBP1,000 for Phace Scotland in the past eighteen months. They've also just completed a major refurbishment programme. NEXUS Nexus, the cafe at the LGB Centre, in Edinburgh is under new management with Joana Martinez having taken over from Fiona Horne in August. The cafe is now going through what could loosely be called a transition period with the development of a new menu, the opening of the "front room" (previously a shop space) which can also be used for private functions etc and several new staff members have also started. DATED Edinburgh Council's latest Health Directory contains a listing for Scottish AIDS Monitor which closed down over seven years ago! AYR TODAY There's a new Social/Support Group for all Gay/Lesbian & Bi-Sexual members of Unison within South Ayrshire Council and their partners called Out & About. Lips Unleashed (Tron 6 Nov) is Rachel Jury, Helen Reeves and friends sharing an eclectic, vibrant evening of spoken word and music. Lick My Heart (The Arches, 13-14 Nov is described as witty, wicked and dirty dance. Sean Tuan John returns to Glasgay after the popular Dances For Aliens in 2000. Lick My Heart features a cocktail of deranged and distressed characters, distorted dance and live obscene phone calls. The Trials of Oscar Wilde (Citizens Theatre, now-16 Nov) is adapted, directed, and designed by Jon Pope from the original trial documents and tells of what was probably the most ill advised libel case of the 19th century, when Wilde sued the Marquis of Queensbury for describing him as a "somdomite", and all that came of it resulting in the destruction and early death of Oscar Wilde. Wilde is played by James Duke and the prosecution by Anne Marie Timoney. Not part of the festival, but the same venue also has Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. Split Britches' Double Agency (Tron, 9-10 Nov) features New York duo Split Britches in a collaboration with the Clod Ensemble where they present a sexy, sultry evening of two works. Miss Risque is a story of secrets and showgirls, a dangerous liaison lurking under the skirts of turn of the century Paris. Strathclyde Theatre Group have Once in a While The Odd Thing Happens by Paul Godfrey (Ramshorn Theatre, 4-9 Nov is a play about the life of composer Benjamin Britten and his partner Peter Pears. We follow them from the start of their relationship, through World War II and up to the production of Britten's first opera. Moving on to comedy we have Tina C (The Stand, 7 Nov) who returns in a night of camp character comedy with support from Ida Barr, also back is Scott Cappuro (The Stand, 10 Nov) with his acerbic wit. Featuring Aussie stand-up Julia Morris with support from David Kay. The Stand acts will also be appearing in Edinburgh. The Bootleg Clare Summerskill (Tron, 16 Nov) features Clare, who returns after a successful Glasgay 2000, and has a fast-moving and hilarious collection of stand-up, comedy monologues and songs. Turning to the visual arts, Marcelo de Melo's All Those Fiddly Bits (The Arches, 5-30 Nov, 10am-10pm) features the work of the Brazilian artist. Including works such as his mosaic-encrusted bicycle exhibited internationally. This new exhibition showcases a mix of portraits, sculptures and canvases and breaks mosaic away from its architectural past. Margaret Barron's paintings (Tron, 1-30 Nov) explore the tension between the ideal and the reality of our surroundings. They attempt to capture a specific moment of seeing a place or an object, the process revealing the gap between expectation and experience. There is also a fine programme of film that includes The Iron Ladies (UGC, 16 Nov). This is an unusual comedy based on a true story. In 1996, a male volleyball team won the Thai national championships with a team consisting mostly of gays, transvestites and transsexuals. The Lampang volleyball team is going down the pan and before long Bee, who happens to be a lesbian, is leading a team of ladyboy volleyballers - with one token straight - up the league to the championship showdown. It won the Audience Award at the San Francisco L&G Film Festival. There's much more to see. Make sure you see some of it. Martin Powell E-mail: martinp@drink.demon.co.uk ------------------------------------------------------------------- THE SUCKER PUNCH ================ - Jack Dickson's grey areas. Populated by tough, emotionally-inarticulate men and disturbed teens, Jack Dickson's novels and short stories are well-known to readers of gay fiction on both sides of the border. Earlier this year, his first short screenplay was produced by Glasgow's Monkey Films, under the auspices of Scottish Screen /SMG's New Found Land scheme for young filmmakers. "The Sucker Punch" follows events in the life of boxing coach Gordie Proctor (played by David Hayman), newly released from prison, after serving time for offences against a thirteen year old boy. The 30 minute TV film (premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival to audible gasps from the audience, and due to be screened on STV/Grampian TV on 7th Nov. at 11.30pm) explores what really happened at the time of the offence, against a back drop of tabloid-generated mob fury. To go into more detail would spoil the film's ending, but suffice to say nothing is quite as it seems. Author Joseph Mills recently spoke to the Sucker Punch screenplay writer at his home in Dennistoun. Joseph Mills:> Is "The Sucker Punch" a gay film? Jack Dickson:> What makes a film gay? Personally, I think it's all in the eye of the beholder. Everyone who sees it will bring a different set of sensibilities to the film - in the same way as everyone involved in making it did. As a gay writer working with two straight women (producer Sara Harkins and director Jules Williamson) on a script set in an ostensibly straight male world, it was really interesting to see the diversity even the three of us brought to the film. But it was a lot of the same stuff. We're all outsiders in that sense, spectators on a closed world. And, as everyone knows, the spectator sees the whole game. Given the clever direction and subtlety of the actors' performances I think we've left it open for audiences to decide for themselves the key elements of sexuality, motives, etc. The themes and the problems faced by the characters will be familiar to many of us. Sucker Punch is about keeping secrets. It's about growing up. It's about stuff we all feel during that great grey area - adolescence - and how a lot of it stays with us. Oh, and it's about boxing, of course. M:> So why the move into films? And why the boxing setting? D:> My writing style is very unmediated anyway. I don't go in for authorial voice much in the novels, and I don't tell my readers what to think. My characters are men of action, and I prefer to allow those actions to speak for them, and let the reader bring his own preconceptions - and prejudices - to what's going on. So film was the obvious direction for me to move in. As for the boxing setting, well.. it's that closed all male world thing, isn't it? The dynamics between men - and men of differing ages - has always fascinated me. It's such a superficially macho milieu, but look a little closer and it's absolutely heaving with sexual tension. It's a very grey area, and grey areas are always the most challenging to explore. M:> What was it like, making a short film on such a tiny budget (GBP50,000 wouldn't buy the sandwiches on the set of a Hollywood effort)? D:> Thankfully, it's only now, months after the event, that the horror stories are trickling down to me. Writers aren't really involved in the actual shooting of a film. We're back-room boys. When our part is finished, the real work starts. M:> Horror stories? D:> The panics, the mishaps - the fact that we didn't have a full cast even on the first day of shooting. Our taxi driver was actually a real taxi driver. He only had a couple of lines, but he did them proud. I think though, he was dubbed over afterwards. M:> Low points in the film-making process? D> Real terror that we wouldn't be ready in time and it would all go pear-shaped. The worst nerves I've ever experienced, each day of shooting. And a weird sort of helplessness. Writing novels, you're more or less a one-man band. With films, suddenly, there s a whole orchestra involved and you're not even the conductor! M:> High points? D:> It has to be watching people watch the film and seeing them drawn into the action. That's the proof of the pudding - and it's such a buzz. My partner was at the premier with me, in Edinburgh, and just watching him watch it was amazing. The script of that damn film's been in both our lives for over three years and Tom lived every hair-tearing moment of its progress with me. So it felt really good to be able to sit there in the dark with him and say 'yeah.. it was worth it!' The Sucker Punch is due to be screened on Scottish and Grampian TV, Thursday 7th November at 11.30pm. Jack Dickson's latest volume of pornography - 'The Masters Files' - is published by Zipper Books later this month. Joseph Mills has had three books published: Towards the End, Obsessions and Borderline: The Mainstream book of Scottish gay writing. Both authors are in the anthology Bend Sinister, published by GMP in October. ----------------------------------------------------------------- TIME FOR T ========== Who put the "bop" in the "bop-de-bop", who put the "ram" in the "ram-a-lama-ding-dong"? Who put the "T" in LGBT? This is something that has fascinated me for a number of years. After all, the LGBT community isn't a tree. It can't mutate all on its own! Someone, somewhere, sometime took the decision, and I genuinely wonder when, how and why. If you know, please tell me so that I can sleep at night. You see, on the face of it, we don't really belong. LGB is all about sexuality, T is about gender. Personally, I'm so very grateful to whoever it was. Without belonging to the wider community, where would we be? There aren't enough of us to be effective on our own, therefore our inclusion is often, quite literally, a lifesaver. Thank you, thank you, thank you. A million trillion times. Now, the big question. As we're part of this, what can we do for you? Over recent years, we have gladly supported LGB issues, recognising our part in the wider scheme of things, but surely there must be something else, something more tangible that we can do? Throughout 2003, TransAlba are going to be asking this question in a number of different ways. We want to focus on the positives. We want to define our place in a community that has embraced us and supported us. We will be asking LGB groups. We will be asking TS groups. We will be asking TV groups, and we will be asking mixed groups. We will be asking: What do our brothers and sisters need? What do we have to offer? I want to take this opportunity to start the ball rolling. Dear reader (yes, I know you're probably the only one!), please help me to spread the word. Ask your friends and ask them to ask their friends, and then tell me. You can E-mail: transalba@whsmithnet.co.uk Watch out for a whole series of special events next year, and we look forward to seeing you there. Now for the joke: Overheard in the pub, two girls talking: "My boyfriend told me last night that he was bisexual!" "How weird!" "I know, I didn't know which way to turn!!!!!!!!" Andrea ----------------------------------------------------------------- BOOKS ===== reviewed by Dirk Kriete The Gay Man's Guide to Growing Older John Lockhart Published by Alyson Price GBP11.99 I'm not the youngest chicken in the barn so to speak and when this book arrived I thought that it would provide some interesting reading with stories and anecdotes told by older generations of gay men. Far from it a dryer and less guiding book you just cannot imagine. It is full of percentage figures, i.e. how many of the men interviewed were still working, how many had enough money to live comfortably, how many still enjoyed sex, etc. etc. I rather think that this book represents a lost opportunity to really show the positive sides of growing older, it never touches on the real issues and hides behind meaningless numbers. It does not by any stretch of the imagination provide guidance on the statistical approach taken by the author. And, as if that was not bad enough, it has no relevance whatsoever to life here in Britain, as it is written exclusively for the American market. Don't waste your money! Wild Animals I Have Known Kevin Bentley Published by Green Candy Press Price GBP9.99 This book was very enjoyable, it brought back memories of the "wild" 1970's and had me spellbound from the first to the last page. It is a witty and literate portrayal of a young man arriving in San Francisco to escape the bigoted society of his childhood in Texas. Although it is first and foremost an account of his sexual exploits in this pre-AIDS Mecca, it is also deeply moving with its insights into the hurts and pains of an essentially immature and romantic young lad. This book is very well written, never overly dramatic and fundamentally frank and open in its approach to the scene of sexual hedonism in which this 22 year-old finds himself embroiled. I laughed and cried reading the exploits of this character and I hope so will you. Cocksure Bob Vickery Published by Alyson Price GBP10.99 Another anthology of stories designed to not just give a rise to your mind, but also other parts of your body. Well, that is the idea I suppose, but I did not find much to give pause for thought, I did not find much to inspire, I did not find much literacy, as a matter of fact, I did not find much Most of the stories in this book follow the old and tested formula of keeping you too stiff to think, and I didn't like the thought of being manipulated in this way. I prefer to read to satisfy my mind and to have sex to satisfy my lust F.U. Mickey Skee Published by Alyson Price GBP10.99 Now this is a funny book! I was in stitches reading about the entirely fictitious exploits and reminiscences of Mickey Skee, returning to the Fraternal University of Camaraderie and Kinship, F.U.C.K. for short. Ten years after graduating, Mickey Skee returns to his alma mater, home of a school-sponsored glory hole and Creative Crotch Shaving, to teach the new intake of testosterone-laden students Advanced Masturbation, History of the Circle Jerk and other equally hilarious subjects. Mickey Skee shows with this book that he's got another string to his bow and that he can make us roar with laughter. I like his approach with this latest offering and hope that more writers will follow his example, sex is fun, sex should be fun, sex should not be taken too seriously. The Phallus Palace Edited by Dean Kotula Published by Alyson Price GBP14.99 One of my best friends is a male to female transsexual and reading about the subject of female to male trans-sexuality was a very enlightening experience for me. To be perfectly honest I never much thought about this subject until this excellent book arrived in our house. At first I thought it would be terribly dry and matter of fact, but to my delight did not find that to be the case. The personal testaments from FTM's and contributions from a host of other involved people see to that. I was however glad that the surgical photographies printed in this book are in black and white, squeamish about such things as I am. As this seems to be an increasingly topical issue I'm sure that this book will be received as both a moving and personal work, as well as one of political importance. France Gay Guide 2002 Spartacus Published by Bruno Gmunder Price GBP9.95 Spartacus have done it again, this must be the most useful book about gay life in France yet to be published. Not only does it cover the hottest spots for cruising, shopping and eating, but also leaves space to introduce you to the most stunning bits of countryside our nearest neighbouring country has to offer. And, should you come unstuck for any reason, there is a comprehensive section offering contacts to local gay groups and organisations. This is the one book I'll be packing when I have a short break over there later this year. The Garden of Secrets Juan Goytisolo Published by Serpent's Tail Price GBP7.99 The Garden of Secrets consists of 28 stories, which make up the four weeks of a month in the garden, or the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet, The character invented, investigated and discussed in the stories is Eusebio. He is apparently taken prisoner after Franco's uprising, then, thanks to the intervention of the brother-in-law who is on the side of the victorious Fascists, he reappears in North Africa with his male lover, then is claimed to have lived and died in a variety of ways, depending on the version given. In The Garden of Secrets Goytisolo's major themes are revisited: love, friendship, the Arab world and how it is perceived by Europe and the way that the Franco regime irrevocably warped Spain, A provocative novel that confirms Goytisolo's position among contemporary literature's greats. Born in Barcelona in 1931, Juan Goytisolo is Spain's greatest living writer. A bitter opponent of the Franco regime, his early novels were banned in Spain. In 1956 he moved to Paris. His novels include Marks of Identity, Count Julian, Juan the Landless, Landscapes After the Battle, The Virtues of the Solitary Bird and Makbara --------------------------------------------------------------- DANCE CHART ============ From Alan Joy! 1 TERMINALHEAD - MIND OF YOUR OWN (The Light Remix) (Kilowatt) 2 OXYGEN featuring ANDREA BRITTON - AM I ON YOUR MIND (Switch) (Oxygen 12"/D Ramirez Vocal Mix) 3 MARTIN H - AFTERSPHERE (Original Mix) (Q) 4 SOULDRIVER - SO GOOD (2002) (Hope) 5 TWISTER - REVOLUTION (Revolution A) (Asphalt) 6 ASHTRAX - DIGITAL REASON (Ogenki Clinic Mix) (Deviant) 7 LEXICON AVENUE - FROM DUSK TILL DAWN (Weekend World Remix) (Forensic) 8 ANDRO - MAGMA (Mechanism) 9 REAL PEOPLE - featuring FADOUA - DO YA (I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU) (3345) (Original Mix) 10 KAO - PRESSURE (E.B. For over fifteen years, she has given therapy to hundreds of men and women who have asked for her help with their sexual problems. She has also worked as a counsellor in the health service and currently counsels at The London Haven, a centre for women with breast cancer. In addition to her counselling work, Julia also writes on relationship and sexual issues for most national magazines and newspapers and has written six books on relationship concerns. She has been an agony aunt for Essentials and The Sunday Express. The Times also recently referred to Julia as "..one of the country's leading marriage counsellors". She is currently sex problems expert, and writing a weekly column, for http://www.femail.co.uk/. Julia says: "During my work with women who have sexual problems I became aware that many women wanted a vibrator that could feel comfortable with. They didn't want penile shapes or vibrators that came from a tacky magazine or shop. They wanted a vibrator that stimulated the clitoris and all important 'orgasmic platform' (the two inches) at the entrance of the vagina. They also asked for a vibrator that actually worked - that gave them the right vibration to achieve orgasm. As there was nothing on the market that fulfilled this, I worked to design and manufacture vibrators that provide the stimulation that is needed to reach orgasm. Women can also feel confident that the web site they are buying from is friendly and informative without being sleazy or intimidating. Emotional Bliss Vibes are a brand new way for women to choose and buy the first vibrator that lives up to its promise - and gives superior sexual satisfaction." Emotional Bliss Vibes are the next generation of vibrators. Everything about them is different and they are set to totally revolutionise the traditional market. EB vibes are designed by leading psychosexual therapist, Julia Cole, and their shape suggests that female extreme pleasure is one of the key reasons why they look completely 'new'. The vibes are shaped to stimulate the clitoris, labia and orgasmic platform; the areas known to be the most erogenous based on the number of concentrated nerve endings. They are safe to use, easy to clean, stylish in appearance, made in England and use a convenient charging unit that allows for up to 60-90 minutes of vibrating stimulation with a minimum of 750 charges. On average, people have sex 110 times a year with the 21-24 year olds setting the pace at 140 times a year. Millions of pounds is spent on sex related products in this burgeoning industry, and EB vibes are setting a new standard in quality, design and technology. Julia Cole, psychosexual therapist commented," Sex is a healthy part of everyday life. Emotional Bliss Vibes take the sleaze out of the vibrator market as they are not sex toys per se. An Emotional Bliss vibe can make the difference between good and great sex, or orgasm or not. They have been designed in line with the female anatomy and can offer extreme pleasure as part of lovemaking. Everybody and anybody can use them. If you have never experienced the sensation of an orgasm, an EB vibe can probably help as they have a wide range of vibrating functions with variable speed with a default setting at 80 Hertz, which is the vibration speed known to most likely result in orgasm." Emotional Bliss Vibes are currently only available at http://www.emotionalbliss.co.uk/and are supported by Relate. Prices start from GBP40 excluding VAT and P&P. The website is also unique in its content with a sexologist forum, 3 chat rooms each capable of hosting 40 people, an educational relationship forum and a shopping area. You can even send vouchers to your friends on line. SAFER SEX FOR GIRLS You may have noticed that the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have been busy preparing for World AIDS Day on 1st December and they are offering us girls the opportunity to let them know what we would like in our Dyke Packs. The packs are free (though a few pennies in the World AIDS Day collecting tins would be appreciated) and the Sisters have been putting questionnaires in all the pubs and clubs for your convenience. Alternatively, you can e-mail them on athletica@drink.demon.co.uk with your suggestions. They would also like to thank all who have already responded and to the girls who wanted a) a new dyke in every pack and b) a selection of toys, that alas the budget doesn't stretch to that. Maybe next year. They would also like to bless all the women out there who have kept and passed on the safer sex message. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Glaschu/Glasgow =============== Salutations and felicitations, gentle folk. Well here we are again; my editor tells me this is a Big Issue! Which either means this is a bumper fun filled edition or that we are all going to be out walking the streets in the near future. Silly me for thinking those days were behind me. Well the mutter from the gutter suggests that, not unlike a lot of things that have grown with the support of the LGBT community, Glasgay now considers itself to be a mainstream arts festival rather than a vehicle for promoting the diverse views and artistic abilities of our community to mainstream society. It would seem that once again, as founders of an LGBT project move aside, the new blood would rather not be saddled with that awkward legacy of Pooves, Dykes and Drag Queens! Maybe they should rename the festival for next year: my suggestion is Deja Vu. On a more positive note, the GlesGay Ceilidh is all set for Saturday 2nd Nov. It Features the Macappella Band and the venue is St. Andrews Hall; St. Andrews Square (off Saltmarket). Tickets are GBP12 (GBP10 concessions), which includes a light snack, light bulb anyone! They are available from Clone Zone, Tron Theatre, LGBT Centre, Cafe Source@St. Andrews Hall and Revolver Bar. The usual free entry to Bennets or Polo after the Ceilidh is also included. Tel: 0781 8291433. E-mail: glesgayceilidh@btopenworld.com Well, so far, feedback from the first B.U.R.L.Y. night has been 'uniformly' positive. I met the boys at Revolver one weekend and the vibe was very good. Just one word of caution, they informed me that the bus for the next night is limited to 50 seats. So get in early to ensure a seat. The next date is Friday 22nd November at The Big Joint, South Street. GBP6 on the door, runs from 10pm-2am with drinks promotions. This clubnight is generating a real buzz and, with your support, looks like going from strength to strength. Contact details at the back of this issue. On the theme of new clubs and venues. it seems that Club Alaska on Bath Lane, which has just closed its doors, is due for a massive refit, change of name and orientation. Yes folks, we could be looking at a new club in the centre of town in time for Christmas. The manager, one Brian Coffey, informs me that the new club will have a capacity of 500 split over two levels. Downstairs will be a lounge area with a small stage for a variety of performers; music, comedy, etc. There will also be table service for drinks. Upstairs will be the nightclub area, music being a mix of funk, house and electro pop. Resident DJ will be John Pleased. The plan is to open 7 days a week downstairs. The upstairs area will open weekends and subject to demand. There will also be a champagne and cocktails bar. The venue is licensed until 3am and the intention is to open at 5pm. The usual drinks promotions are planned. Dress code is smart casual wear, no trainers or baseball caps (Hurrah!). Entrance fee will be between GBP8-10 though a loyalty card will earn you a discount. The press launch is on Thu 14th Nov with the opening night on Fri 15th Nov.One way and another, it appears that the scene in Glasgow is changing for the better. So watch this space for all the latest developments. Here is a strange item for those of you into strange but true. Red light districts are a favourite target for the raving right, as opposed to the loony left. However, the latest is the introduction of blue lights and it's not what you are thinking. Apparently certain public areas such as bus stations and toilets are being fitted with blue lights. The reason is that drug users attempting to inject while in these locations are then unable to see their veins, thus dealing with a perceived public nuisance. I have it from a sound source that other places including the LGBT Centre are considering this policy. (Hardly a new idea. The Golden Lion in Soho had these in the 70's!--Ed.). So, you are female, but not sure where you stand on your sexuality. However you would love to sit and chat with someone about life the universe and everything. Step forward LIPS - Lesbians In Peer Support. This is a project that offers support to young Lesbians and Bisexual women aged 25 and under. The meetings are held at the Glasgow Women's Library on the 1st and 3rd Sat of each month and the 2nd and 4th Thu of each month. Further details on the Listings page under Youth Groups. So why not give it a try? Well once more I reach the end of another desperate attempt to fill enough column inches. Until next month, whatever you find to do: be safe. Angharad Angharad@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------------- Dun Eideann/Edinburgh ===================== Well what excitement we all had this month - Edinburgh's latest gay night (Wiggle) went down an absolute storm in Club Ego on Saturday 12th Oct - it was absolutely jam packed - and rightly so as the night was superb and enjoyed by all. For those interested - Wiggle will be running every 4th Saturday at Ego 11pm-3am. 'Night of a Thousand Kylie's' is the theme for the next Wiggle with the pre-club at Planet Out with DJ Brett King. Special froggy green queue jumping passes are available from Planet Out which give occasional concessions on things such as entry fee etc. Edinburgh's 'Pop Idol' has proved to be very popular with many karaoke regulars coming along to Planet Out to show off their voices. The last few rounds are taking place in Planet Out on Thursday nights with the grand final taking place on the 7th Nov. The lucky winner will receive an excellent set of prizes: GBP200 holiday vouchers kindly donated by Bacardi, make over and hair cuts from Hayes Salon (PS Thanks for my free hair cut, ya mocket cows!), 16 hours in a recording studio, a photo shoot plus gigs in Vibe (held on Tuesday nights) and singing at Planet Out's Birthday Bash (14th November)! Stores such as Pickwicks don't know what has hit them this month as the gay community has gone Hallowe'en bonkers in October! Friday 25th Oct was due to be the night on which everyone's favourite bar - Habana - celebrated the event early with the usual games such as dooking etc as well as various prizes and giveaways throughout the night for best fancy dress (main prize being a DVD player (so make I hope you made a fucking effort!) This event was also charity based with money going to Community Integrated Care - a charity which helps people with special needs. Thursday 31st Oct is going to be the date for everyone's diary as Habana, Planet Out and CC's are all planning entertaining Hallowe'en nights! Despite Habana having an official party on the 25th on the 31st the usual Quizioke will have a Hallowe'en theme to it and added games and fun to entertain and get involved in! Planet Out has its fabulous hostess Ima Whoore In Hallowe'en attire as their theme night 'Let Planet Out Put The Willies Up You!'. Drink promos run throughout the night as well as the usual dooking and treacle type games. Prizes are on offer for the best dressed and a booby prize for the worst - be careful cos I'm the judge! Prizes, giveaways and games all night - not to be missed! CC Blooms is also actively involved in the fun and games so everybody will be getting good use out of their costumes! They're holding their night's frolics in aid of Gay Men's Health. A karaoke will be happening upstairs as well as prizes/games and a superb raffle with prizes donated very kindly by various establishments including; champagne, vouchers, tickets for the Playhouse, and an electrical appliance of some sort i.e. a TV/video or something along those lines. All gay venues seem to be making a real effort with Hallowe'en this year so don't just decide on one venue go to them all! After all you'll feel better going along and showing support to charities which one day you yourself may need! On the old 'Wee Alan' grapevine I've heard two bits of gossip which will (probably) be confirmed if you keep your eyes peeled on the old notice board in CC's! A late licence has been applied for for the Hallowe'en night so the party could go on till 5am! There has also been talk of revamping the Tuesday nights with cheap drink promos at GBP1.50 and also having a cheezy theme every week such as Madonna v Kylie. Free entry at the door and scraping the old 70's and 80's Tuesday night, CC's will probably be the place for mid week partying. Vibe you may have some competition! Check out the notice board for updates! Also a big hello to the new door staff, X. I also hear that Planet Out is in the process of revamping its quiz on a Tuesday night with 'Ol Blue Eyes' I think it will have more audience involved type games like Pin The Cock On The Stud (a bit of filth always gets a thumbs up from me!) A big hello to the door staff in Planet also, X. On the subject of partying, Habana will be hosting a revamped Queerest Link. Cilla Slack will be launching this new charity night and will be Habana's very own Anne Robinson! The quiz will follow a similar format like the popular TV show and will give customers a chance to test their knowledge and tell other contestants what they think of one another (I can see it becoming dead bitchy so it should prove to be very entertaining!). The show will be followed by DJ Cilla Slack's fun and dancy tracks for you all to enjoy, the money raised on the actual quiz nights will be divided up amongst local gay charities. Throughout the month of October, recently revamped Nexus cafe will be hosting an art exhibition in conjunction with Stonewall Youth Project. If you're muck loving like me, go along--there might be some nudes! On the subject of Stonewall did any one else read about the controversy in the paper about the organisation providing plays in schools about homophobic bullying? As usual, the fascist bigot public is causing an outrage about absolutely nothing! As well as giving the usual 'gay strip' your undivided attention, don't forget about those places which may involve you walking a little! Frenchies is a small yet cosy little boozer. The staff are friendly and drinks are reasonably priced as well. The pub is situated in Rose Street Lane North opposite Costa. The Laughing Duck (which is host to Velvet Chains, a goth type night) is always very busy but if you haven't been get yourself along there! The pub is probably the nicest decorated on the gay scene and a wide mix of people make up the clientele. They also serve food until 7pm (I think!) and its ideal for Sunday brunch with The Tank Engine after a weekend of getting pissed! Townhouse sauna is still undergoing refurbishment but it's business as usual. Out of the Blue--yeah the 'sex shop' underneath Blue Moon Cafe--has a little sale on selected goods in their shop. Food is always excellent up the stairs as well. I would also like to mention some other pubs in Broughton Street ie Outhouse situated in Broughton Lane and Bar Mezz situated on the next corner down from Blue Moon. I was in them with straight friends recently and the talent was superb! Oh, before I forget: on the 2nd Nov - Luvely has a 'Horny Guise And Fawksy Chics' night, 10.30pm-3am at the Liquid Rooms in Victoria St. Pre club will be at Habana and entry to Luvely is GBP8 for members and GBP10 for guests. I told you last month that Mark had sold the Holyrood Tavern. However, it looks like the deal has fallen through and the hairy monster will have to temporarily shelve his dreams to transform South Queensferry to the Hay on Wye of the Forth! The Bears were out in force for the recent BearScotFest (see photos on this page) which was held not in the woods but in the Claremont and Townhouse with a lot of visiting guys staying at the Mackenzie Guest House. Happy birthday to Planet Out! On 14th Nov, a shag tag like night will be part of the capers as well as various prizes, giveaways, guest DJ's and Ima Whoore as the hostess! It will also be the final of Pop Idol so it's going to be a busy one! And happy birthday too to Lesley my drinking buddy and ex member of bar staff from Planet, also DJ Johnboy, Gordon and Cilla Slack from Habana. Big hugz and kisses from Wee Alan XXXXXXXX Oh and another thing, byebye to wee Blake who is going home for Xmas to Australia - Louise and the gang will miss you behind the bar! And a massive two fingers to my new 'friend' Douglas - yup you know who you are, mister! 'Wee Alan' E-mail: weealan@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- Scottish Media Monitor ====================== Garry Otton pulls Conservatives, religionists and anti-porn 'feminists' off our backs! The Scottish News of the World needs to have a talk to its employees about the birds and the bees. With only Anvar Khan flying the flag for anything like a modern, liberated view on sexual issues at this paper, readers are being short-changed. Sharon Marshall's 'exclusive' on BBC2 drama Tipping the Velvet begged: "Is this tale of lesbian lust the steamiest show ever seen on our TVs?" (Well, I suppose I should be grateful it wasn't the Mail's take on this which will most probably run along the lines of 'can TV stoop any lower?') Marshall's piece left me confused. News of the World film critic Shebah Ronay was dragged on to call it "soft porn disguised as art" an 'insider' added: "It's filthy". But if it was so bad, what was S.N.O.T World doing showing three black and white and three colour pics of 'steamy' lesbian kisses? Then another three examples of gay kisses we've all seen before on TV? The pictures revealed nothing more 'steamy' than a nipple, a couple of women cuddling in bed, a picture of two women in corsets and two of them kissing. (Yawn)! The tabloid gasped: "These astonishing lesbian scenes are played out in the first HOUR of a new BBC drama series. They are so realistic that Scots actress Rachael Stirling, 24, and Keeley Hawes got drunk before undressing each other". But was that quite true? Keeley Hawes admitted: "We did get fairly drunk, if I'm honest. Then it was kind of fun, we laughed a lot. In any case, kissing a woman is not that different form kissing a man - just less chance of stubble rash. Maybe after this everyone will want to be a lesbian". I know such swift condemnation helps sell TV programmes. So perhaps programme makers contrive to excite the outrage. And the tabloid cry of 'sleaze' is that faked too? If so, aren't we just the idiot nation for being so easily duped? In one of the most outspoken critical commentaries on the media I have ever seen in Scotland, columnist Robert McNeil in The Scotsman cast a jaundiced eye on the activities of the Countryside Alliance's recent march for so-called Liberty and Livlihood. It was, of course, just a huge PR exercise. In Scotland it was masterminded by the same man who challenged Scotland with Keep the Clause. Jack Irvine and his horrible band of cronies at Media House. With the help of landowners, their political slogans were erected to face oncoming traffic in fields like so many Conservative Party placards before them. The demonstration, the biggest in Europe, we were told, was supposed to have attracted 400,000 demonstrators. After studying video footage, Napier University researchers claimed only 151,400. Catholic, Conservative, cruel-sport supporting homophobe and media propagandist Mrs Katie Grant only managed to recruit 10,000 from Scotland. For goodness sake, there have been bigger gay prides! McNeil wrote: "I'm told that the Daily Mail, the paper that backed Hitler in the 1930s and which remains the most evil mainstream organisation in Britain today, devoted 13 pages to the demonstration of rural superiority (remember the whole point of this rustic rubbish is that they think they're better than the rest of us). With the exception of the Daily Mirror, the West Highland Free Press and a couple of our own Hootsfolk, print journalism has covered itself in manure through a contemptible, amoral campaign whose intellectual shallowness has known no depths. Never since the miners' strike (when, on one notorious occasion, it reversed the footage to show pickets attacking police first, rather than vice versa) has the BBC stood so seriously in breach of its charter. Every day last week, we had to suffer propaganda snippets, paid for out of personal taxation, for the sinister, right-wing Countryside Alliance". "Gay rights campaigners are being paid to stage an anti-bullying play in Edinburgh schools in a move which has infuriated the Catholic Church and Tory politicians", wrote so-called journalist, Brian Ferguson for Edinburgh's Evening News. The "being paid" bit referred to "GBP6,500 of city council cash as part of a high profile crusade against bullying in the Capital's schools". The implications are clear. Ferguson has chosen carefully those who are always prepared to challenge this so-called "crusade". The names of those who will not make it into Ferguson's report include Dr Ian Rivers, a senior lecturer in social psychology who asked 200 gay men and women about their experiences in school. The eminent doctor found that those subjected to psychological bullying, such as stares or ostracism, were more likely to leave school than those physically attacked. He found 28 per cent admitted being bullied by teachers due to perceived sexual orientation. Post traumatic stress disorders affected one in six bullied pupils with symptoms ranging from nightmares, panic attacks and flashbacks. In a University of London report, they found 82 per cent of English and Welsh schools were aware of homosexual bullying, yet only six per cent made reference to it in any anti-bullying policies. An Executive-sponsored unit based at Edinburgh University indicated a "significant problem" with bullying in Scottish schools. They found children as young as seven victims of homophobic bullying; a head teacher of one primary school explained that words like 'poof' and 'gayboy' were commonplace amongst seven-year-olds. Otherwise described in this report as "children", the play was to be shown to 14 and 15-year-olds! The Catholic Church couldn't care less about the victims of bullying. Rent-a-gob John Deighan pursued his religionist agenda to declare that Peter Alexander's play "would horrify parents". He knows that does he? I think what has been going on behind the closed doors of the Catholic Church in recent times will horrify parents! The editorial in Edinburgh's Evening News declared: "Now the first real test of the post-Section 28 era in Scottish schools has arrived". Has this writer ever read The Scottish Daily Mail or heard of the notorious Christian Institute? The editorial's belief that singling out homosexuality in this anti-bullying initiative "may turn the spotlight" on the very people it was supposed to protect, is rather like suggesting we shouldn't confront men with the issue of rape and violence against women for fear of putting the idea in their heads. The editorial also fidgeted with the idea that many parents would be uncomfortable with their "children" watching the play at all before appearing to suggest kids might be gathered round their teacher to listen to a short story from Shoot My Load: "But it is only children with emotional maturity who should be expected to engage in debate about homosexuality". I hate to have to say, 'I told you so', but after promoting a ban on lap-dancing in the capital, Glasgow City Council's response to the knowledge they were letting a shop to purveyors of erotic material, World of Video in Saltmarket and a warehouse to Glenalder's sister company, Distribution Direct (Scotland) Ltd was knee-jerk. "The premises at Chapel Street will cease to be let out to one of these companies by the end of this month. We shall visit the shop in Saltmarket. If we find The Herald's allegations are well founded, we shall take steps to terminate the lease". The Herald has been up to its eyeballs in a rather nasty campaign of moral vigilance. Biased reporting meant that The Herald only printed responses in support of these repressive measures from Catherine Harper of Scottish Women Against Pornography and Sandra White SNP MSP. Nothing defending the rights of women to work in the sex industry or Victor Shields and his son's right to create such employment appeared. A few years ago, (Scottish Media Monitor November 1998) The Sunday Mail attacked Shields's business as: "Sleazy sordid in the shadows of Scotland's sickest industry in a world of bogus names, anonymous box numbers and secret sex parties in the frontline of a rising tide of filth amongst Scotland's sleaziest, sickest and most depraved" before promptly passing their "dossier" on to the vice squad. How much longer before what we have of the freedom and rights of gays and lesbians are curtailed too? Already, people behind this exercise in moral policing have declared gay erotica as 'exploitative'. What next, demonstrations by this 'concerned' moral alliance of Conservatives, religionists and anti-porn 'feminists' outside Glasgow's Clone Zone? The sight of journalists acting as moral vigilantes is quite repugnant. In another report on the same paper, Iain Wilson and Billy Briggs also exercised their prejudices over the freedom of sexual expression when they reported, with some relish, the support of Strathclyde Police: "You may be sure we will be investigating claims made by The Herald". After visiting Legs 'n' Co, (formerly Divally's), a bar in Glasgow that was applying to open its doors until 3 am, the broadsheet's intrepid reporters found that girls "danced naked while fondling their private parts, and made full body contact with customers - while men, in the public bar, stripped to show their genitals in return for free drinks and dances". Instead of heading for the door - normal practice when a bar is not to your liking - they turned to Glasgow's censorial licensing board for a comment, but alas - found no support for their condemnation. After all, no one had ever bothered to make an official complaint! Unsatisfied with that, the reporters approached Glasgow City Council. "The city council welcomed The Herald's revelations - and renewed its call to the Scottish Executive to increase its powers to limit lap-dancing activity". Such heroes, aren't they? And let's hope The Herald's new buyers will kick this broadsheet into the 21st century! He looked completely mad staring out on the front page of The Scottish Sun. This was "bug-eyed pervert Ian Curtis". The Sun was enjoying itself once again, with a particularly narrow view on sexuality. "HUBBY FACING DIVORCE OVER ROMP WITH FROZEN CHICKEN". Mark Howarth's 'exclusive' was supposed to support a "sickened wife" who was divorcing Ian Curtis after she caught him "having sex - with a frozen chicken". (I would've imagined it would've felt a whole lot better using one that had been thawed, but the idea of having sex with a frozen bird from Somerfield probably made better copy)! Curtis was dressed in a blouse and rubber stockings when wife Jean walked in and declared: "You dirty b******, that's my Sunday lunch". Jean Curtis was made completely aware of her husband's transvestite interests well before they were married. One would assume, his willingness to sexually experiment too. A huge black and white picture of a frozen chicken appeared under the headline: "DIRTY PLUCKER!" Although, as readers, we were supposed to side with the poor, sobbing Jean, The Scottish Sun was just milking her for a good story. She was pictured holding up a basque. The fact that Jean claimed this tattooed ex-military policeman had assaulted her, beating her during rows and attempting to strangle her and throw her out of their 10th floor flat window in Cranhill in Glasgow was confined to the small print. That was the only thing that should have 'shocked' us. Garry Otton's book SEXUAL FASCISM is published by Ganymede Books priced GBP8.99. E-mail: garry@scottishmediamonitor.com Web: http://www.scottishmediamonitor.com. *cut it out! * Gerald Warner in Scotland on Sunday: "It is her denunciation of the Back to Basics slogan as 'evil' that most strongly reeks of hypocrisy. Can this be the same Edwina Currie who declared 'Good Christian people will not catch Aids'? She may well have had a valid point" * Gerald Warner's opinion on the sexual hypocrisy of Conservative politicians in Scotland on Sunday: "The guardians of society have a responsibility to affirm standards, even if they privately lapse from them. The Victorians understood this, in an age of discreet licentiousness in high places. For this, they are denounced as hypocrites today; but they preserved family life as the cement of society". * Homophobic and Conservative to the core, columnist Mrs Katie Grant in The Scotsman: "In their new touchy-feeliness, Tories must beware of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The concept of what we call the 'traditional' family is too important to be jettisoned in a fervour of modernisation backing the family is not a policy option, it is a policy necessity and one that should be trumpeted rather than hidden". * Mrs Katie Grant's pronouncement on the death of the Conservative Party in Scotland on Sunday: "It might prove impossible to compete with Labour on the 'women 'n' gay rights' front. If this is the case, and their policies, in the cold light of day, do not seem radically different from what Blair's crew are offering, what then for the once great Conservative party? Oblivion". We do hope so! * Cameron Macintosh's plans for his funeral in Scotland on Sunday: "It's going to be a fabulous production" * What Tom Thomson, new chairman of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra was reported telling The Herald: "He said one, Jack Irvine, the former newspaper editor who runs the public relations agency Media House, would help raise the orchestra's profile in the media, and said he was the 'best PR man in the country'." Oh really? That'll be quite a few regular ticket buyers up the Swanee already then, Mr Thomson! * Father Joe Chambers who chaired the working party on the new guidelines for sex education in Catholic schools in The Sunday Times Scotland: "The approach we've taken is neither negative nor positive There are people with genuine abnormalities in their physical and psychological make-up and they still need the pastoral care of the church. There are people with sexual abnormalities who are just as deserving of the help of the church as anyone else". Would the last one leaving the Church please turn out the light! * On the bill proposing to allow gays, lesbians and unmarried couples the right to adopt in The Herald: "John Deighan spokesman for the Catholic Church in Scotland, said the bill would undermine marriage and endanger children. 'By their nature, homosexual relationships are not stable'." And by their nature, ditto for Catholic priests! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Dun-deagh/Dundee ================ With the rain pouring down almost continuously, the sale of umbrellas has been going up in Dundee. It's been mainly to the customers of Charlie's bar who have been trying to avoid the leaks in the roof The pub has been less busy lately and so there has been floor space for all the buckets placed to catch the drips. However two possible solutions to the problem have been found. One was to get customers to use the lounge side and the other is to put up yet another secondary ceiling so the water finds it more difficult to drip down to the customer's necks. At least a solution has been found. The planned major alterations to the bar have not been forthcoming and, as Charlie and Ian are rumoured to be considering whether to buy it, extend the lease or give it up in a year, many doubt if the desperately needed work will go ahead. Lloyds Number One (or the Capitol as it is also known) is the pub attracting many gay and lesbian customers despite the animosity shown towards them by the straight guys. Safety in numbers I say and it is a great pub with good food and a couple of gay staff. Raffles, up the Perth Road, whilst still popular with gay students is less busy as the scene has moved back towards Lloyds and the Seagate. Brooklyns Bar in St Andrews Lane has become popular since the arrival of Kerry and the introduction of some great drinks deals. Pints at a pound till 9pm and then jugs with 4 pints in them at GBP6 have also attracted the people. Rumours that it was just for a week seem wrong as they tell everyone it's going on into November too. With karaoke on two nights a week and cabaret entertainment, the place has found a new confidence and atmosphere which had been sadly lacking! No offence! The appearance of Drag Queen Sassy at Brooklyns was a shock for many. Firstly it wasn't advertised and she was apparently quite sharp witted. If I knew about it I to would have supported it, but I hear it was standing room only. One of my friends tells me Sassy is coming back to Dundee (Brooklyns?) at Christmas, so keep your ears open and let me know when. The club Out (still referred to as Liberty by many!) has been busier lately and with a few people from out of town too. Pity the management don't seem to have enough staff on at times at the plush bar. I had to wait so long for service one night I saw repeats of the video they showed on the huge plasma screen about three times. The new drinks promos requested by me have arrived and helped. Funny how the owner claims nothing written in this magazine affects his business. So they now offer a free nip of WKD spirit with every bottle of WKD sold on Wednesdays and a free sidekick with every VK on a Thursday. The 5Op a vodka deal on Sundays stopped very suddenly! I hear a few bans have been lifted at all scene venues in Dundee as the competition gets fierce. Charlie and Ian have allowed several former troublesome customers in. The club has also permitted some others back even those who wet the pub carpet and those who are rumoured to offer favours in the toilet. The drive to win more customers has not included the former manager who is still blistering in his attack of his one time employer. The club has boy band 3SL performing in late November. They were support act for Liberty X at the troubled ice rink in Dundee recently. The guys who are really hunky will get a warmer receptlon when they play for the Dundee gays! The sister of one of the guys was in Steps so they might become even bigger. They have been in the dance charts so it is a band we have heard of before and that makes a change. The chart topper Kelly Lorena is coming up at Christmas to do Out in Dundee and also I hear Aberdeen. She hasn't done the gay scene before and is still very much a current chart topper so it will be busy that night. As grippy Brian isn't spending a lot on advertising (Quite so! His sporran is truly welded.--Ed.) this might be the on1y notice you get! It is normally in the spring when people get frisky, but Autumn seems to have done it too. Perhaps guys and girls don't want to spend long winter nights on their own. The numbers going in and out of 'relationships" (the gay man's word for a one night stand!) are amazing. Bar staff have been the most noticeable at taking up offers of tips and other things from customers. Charlies barman Mike (rumoured to be leaving for the competition!) has been getting his wiring checked over and getting his Northern Light illuminated by a guy from Aberdeen. Oh happy days! Shafted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Films ===== by Malcolm Epstein FILMS TO KNOW ABOUT How far do we like violence to go onscreen? While watching a preview of "Reservoir Dogs" a few years ago I walked out within half an hour when a hoodlum tied a policeman to a chair and sliced his ear off. Its director Quentin Tarantino later admitted many women had told him they walked out of cinemas at that point. So clearly I have a female mind. But the movie was a big hit in America. Up till about 40 years ago most Hollywood films were made by one of half a dozen studios all very concerned about their reputation for good taste. For many years now it is accountants who make decisions on which subjects to finance and all that matters in their minds is will it make us money. I walked out of "Scream" when the first high school girl was slashed and the screen was full of blood. It was such a big hit they followed it with two sequels and there were several copycat films. I can understand the studios are tired of paying $20 million to superstars if they can find a way of bringing people into cinemas with unknown casts happy to work for miniscule fees. While we have become used to endless gunfire in films America is now having to get used to teenagers in schools going berserk with guns. And the serial sniper in Washington recently has proved anyone can die if they happen to be within his gun sights. In her latest film "Enough" (15) Jennifer Lopez is a young mother who confronts her husband with the fact she knows he is having an affair. He punches her face viciously. I have no doubt domestic violence happens in many parts of the world, but I don't want to see it onscreen as entertainment. If you do you can rush to see "Enough". Two films with gay themes worth your consideration from Britain and America have not inspired their makers to think of titles beyond letters. You will see ads for the British "A.K.A." (18) which means also known as, by a worth watching new writer/director Duncan Roy, about an attractive 18 year old gay guy, Matthew Leitch, desperate to escape a violent and sexually abusive father. His mother, who tolerates her husband's violent rages, is a waitress talking endlessly about the wealthy people she serves in an expensive restaurant. Matthew decides he must join this segment of society and his looks help him to do so. Unfortunately Duncan Roy has made his film with the screen broken up into three sections continually. And watching three frames for over two hours won't appeal to everybody. Some of the settings in luxurious homes and French locations would look stunning on one large screen, but that didn't appeal to Mr Roy. Nevertheless "A.K.A." is a brilliantly cast movie pointing out the disadvantages of running your life on lies and fraud with credit cards. "A.K.A" will be shown at Glasgay and at the following cinemas: Belmont in Aberdeen from 1st November for 1 week, UGC Glasgow from Nov. 8th for 1 week, Filmhouse in Edinburgh from 15th December for 1 week In "L.I.E." (18), standing for Long Island Expressway, 15 year old Howie doesn't know his friend Gary has a sex-for-pay relationship with the elderly Big John. Gary is saving to leave the area and persuades Howie to join him in burgling the man's house. Big John quickly realizes who the thieves were and as Gary has disappeared he tracks Howie down. The boy's world is crumbling as he has no mother and his father is suddenly put in prison for fraud. Big John's shoulder is there for him to lean on. The older man is played brilliantly by British character actor Brian Cox. But the American first time director, Michael Cuesta, missed a golden opportunity here of making this a much more commercial movie by making the boy 17 years of age and the man an attractive mid thirties With the right casting the electricity between them then could have been very potent indeed. While Clint Eastwood no longer has the charisma of the Dirty Harry movies of so long ago he still is a very shrewd judge of good scripts which is why "Blood Work" (15) is a thriller with impact. Clint directs himself as a former FBI investigator who is taking it easy after a massive heart attack. He is recovering because of a heart transplant from a woman who was murdered. Later her sister pleads with him to investigate her murder. It takes him on a surprising series of events that kept me engrossed. The French Audrey Tautou, who was a big hit in "Amelie", plays an art student totally obsessed with a married doctor in "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not" (12a). She lives in a dream world telling her friends their romance will work out as he is leaving his wife. But it is all lies as he is hardly aware of her. As the doctor is played by one of the sexiest men in France, Samuel le Bihan, you can almost sympathise with her obsession. Then you realize it is a madness leading to disaster for both of them. In "Mrs Caldicot's Cabbage War" (15) Pauline Collins is the widow of a man who has treated her as a doormat for 40 years and she finds her married son wants to put her in a home for the elderly so he can sell her house for his own profit. Watching her fighting back is constantly entertaining as she reveals the neglect suffered by the residents of the home in the local paper and on national TV. CURRENT RELEASES The irresistible Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson suffer a minor road collision in, "Changing Lanes" (15). They become bitter adversaries as Ben leaves some valuable papers behind needed in a court case he is defending and Samuel's lateness makes him lose a custody battle with his ex-wife. This is not vintage Affleck, but when you are watching one of the most stimulating men on this planet there are those amongst us who would watch him reading the phone book. "Two Men Went To War" (PG) is a British comedy based on an amazingly true story. Two soldiers have a passionate desire for active service. A sergeant in the Dental Corps, Kenneth Cranham, too old to fight, and a trainee dental mechanic, Leo Bill, decide to make their own way to France. A letter has been sent to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, informing him. Their adventures crossing the Channel and in German occupied France constantly surprise. On the way back they are picked up at sea and interrogated as spies. "Simone" (PG) is a very weird concoction. Al Pacino is a Hollywood film director past his prime who, tired of temperamental actresses, decides to make a movie with computer software and a leading lady he invents. It is ridiculous but very enjoyable and worth your valuable time. "Road To Perdition" (15) is not the best picture of the year as some critics have implied, but an impressive 1931 gangster movie marred by holes in the script. Paul Newman runs an empire with minions jumping to his whims. But the storyline never explains why he doesn't admonish his gun happy son who murders women and children. Tom Hanks' relationship with his son could make you cry. You might fall in love with 13 year old Tyler Hoechlin. Jude Law is excellent as a determined murderer. While Tom Hanks is not as lovely as he used to be, his son Colin Hanks is a very desirable sight in "Orange County" (12a). He is a teenager determined to become a writer. But his family don't take him seriously including an older drug dealer brother. All that Californian sunshine has tanned some lovely bodies here. "xXx" (12a) must be the action movie of the year with the skinhead tattooed Vin Diesel in the lead employed by the National Security Agency to go to Prague where their undercover agent has just been murdered. The muscular Mr Diesel's exploits have to be seen to be believed. There are more explosions than you have ever seen onscreen before. "Mr Deeds" (12a) is Adam Sandler running a pizza cafe in a small town who is suddenly informed by business tycoons he has just inherited $40 billion. Believing him a simpleton who can be manipulated they whisk him to the big city and a luxury home with valet. But he has a few shocks for them that will keep you amused. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Obar Dheadhain/Aberdeen ======================= Hiya Lovely Laddies 'n' Bonny Lassies in the drookit North East!! To say it's wet is an understatement, it doesn't matter how much bloody gell I stick in ma hair I still look like a droon't rat! Really sorry for the lack of column inches (now just stop it!) in the last mag but I'd been under the doctor, (I'll let you make up your own jokes there) having come down with the dreaded lurgie, and I've only just managed to get shot of it. I think. Some good news to get along with though, our local boyz in blue have caught one of the bastards who have been attacking the guyz in the Duthie Park. Silly bugger was caught using one of the stolen credit cards, has been formally identified and is in a room at Her Majesty's Hotel awaiting trial. So to any of you doubters out there: the remote reporting system and the bobbies do work. Now, if only we could get some of them to come out from under their helmets ... hmmmm another fantasy, just ignore me! THE SCENE STUFF: OK, so my friends at Out Clubbing weren't happy with the last lot of drivel I wrote about them, but guyz 'n' girlz at Out, Brian gave me the info! (That's not exactly what Madame Grumpy says. One of you must have been pissed.--Ed.) Enough of that though, things are improving with more booze available without running out 3/4 of the way through the night so if you like to get your laughing gear round something other than ... you're in luck! The prices have stabilised and so has the music (If that's what it's called. God, I must be getting old!!). There is a great atmosphere. If only the bar staff would smile more it may even get to be perfect. (Will have to wait for the decorators though!). Fidel's is still going and contrary to rumours Jason hasn't done an Elvis and left the building, he's just taking a well-earned break. The drink promos continue so if you want a cheap drink check out what's on offer. No movement at the Castro's site as yet and to be honest, with this weather, who the hell wants to be in a building with no roof! I will keep you posted with all of the details as they come in. COMMUNITY NEWS: Things are getting busy for the folk of the North East LGBT Forum (that's NELF for short - please note the name change from NEEF). Just to fill you in on the details of the Forum and what it's about I've pinched some of Duncan's fab article for Aberdeen City Council's Bon Accord article (with their permission of course). The forum was formed shortly after the launch of the city LGBT Action Plan and provides a focal point for dealing with issues that affect the LGBT Community in the North East by acting as an umbrella organisation. A couple of notable achievements to date have been the creation of the web site providing links and useful information to the wider community and, in June of this year, their running of the first Pride event to be held in Aberdeen. Their aims for the next year include becoming a registered charity to allow the forum to bid for funding for project work, an LGBT Centre in the city and to run a second Pride event. Now, as with all of these kinds of groups, it needs the input and support of the community it is representing to supply the services you lot keep asking for - so get off your arses and come along and help! The next Forum meeting is on the 26th Nov at 7.30pm In the Arts Centre. Ab-Fab is up and running again and in full swing (after a bloody long summer holiday, if you ask me!). Alistair, where's my poster from the office? North East Scotland Gay Group are also back. If you're interested, get in touch with me at the PHACE Scotland office on Aberdeen (01224) 587166. Up in God's own shire (Moray to you heathens) the Pride of Moray Firth Group is starting up again under the wing of your very own PHACE Scotland - Grampian Gay Men's Health Project. So, for all you Moravians interested in coming along, just contact me on the number above and I will give you the details of the next meeting to be held at the end of November. World AIDS Day is approaching fast and a number of events are planned this year including the World AIDS Day Remembrance Service and of course the annual Red Ribbon Ceilidh. For more information on what is happening in the Aberdeen area take a look at the NHS Grampian website at http://www.health-promotions.com/for the link page. OK, so this is shorter than the usual diatribe that I write but it's the time of year when reports for them that pay the wages have to be ready. If there is any information you would like included in the next article, contact me at the office. To everyone out there in Bendy Boy 'n' Girl land: "Let's be careful out there" and have some safe fun. Luv, Hugs 'n' Kisses Mark Thomson E-mail: markt@phacescotland.org ------------------------------------------------------------------ Inbhir Nis/Inverness ==================== With The Gate closed for refurbishment, it's been a very quiet month in Inverness' gay world although Sleepers bar have been keeping up their gay Friday nights so as not to leave us completely homeless. Although not as busy as The Gate, Sleepers has been a constant venue for gay punters, offering the more relaxed ambience of a hotel bar and disco. For those who have been pining for the more up-tempo, free-for-all atmosphere of The Gate , the re-opening preview night on the 18th of Oct couldn't come have fast enough! It seemed like the place had been shut for an eternity but the finished product was well worth the wait. With a 'ticket only' policy on the Thursday night, The Gate attracted a large, mixed crowd of invited guests who were treated to a lavish buffet and free drinks (not that that's ever a bonus, of course) in the new and improved surroundings. With a new, smaller bar, the floor space has been substantially enlarged allowing more seating and tables in the front eating area and less of a squeeze amongst the standing crowd. The back area of the bar has kept the popular diner-style seating, although fully refurbished, and now features a new DJ booth and sound system which will only go to encourage the dancers amongst us. The whole venue has had a complete make-over with a very modern look, yet still maintains the warm, friendly atmosphere it enjoyed before. Darren and Adrian, the owners, have had a very hectic and stressful couple of months but can surely take pride in the finished results and look forward to building on the already successful formula and client loyalty The Gate has achieved. The Inverness grapevine is hot with the possibility that Blue are contemplating a gay night soon as well (bloody hell, was there something in all that flood water?) so we'll keep our ears to the ground and announce any further information as we know it. Anyone else? Ness-Quick E-mail: ness-quick@drink.demon.co.uk -------------------------------------------------------------------- International News from Rex Wockner =================================== *EU project sees full success Six of the 10 countries that are hoping to be accepted into the European Union by Spring 2003 had anti-gay laws on the books at the time of their application for EU membership. The International Lesbian & Gay Association (ILGA) and national gay groups responded by lobbying the European Parliament to refuse EU membership to any nation that "through its legislation or policies, violates the human rights of lesbians and gay men," which the parliament agreed to do in 1998. Since then, all six nations have repealed their anti-gay laws -- Lithuania in September 2000, Estonia in September 2001, Romania in December 2001, Cyprus in July 2002, and Hungary and Bulgaria in September 2002. "This is a truly historic success for the human-rights policies of the European Union, for the European Parliament, and for Europe's LGBT movement," said ILGA-Europe Executive Director Ailsa Spindler. "Changes which could have taken decades without international pressure have been effected in a few years. They demonstrate that LGBT rights are now being taken seriously at the European level, and give us strong encouragement to pursue actively other areas of discrimination." *Tasmania launches school bulletin The State Education Department in the Australian state of Tasmania has launched an LGBT issues bulletin to keep schools informed of the latest developments in anti-homophobia programs. "The advent of 'Talking Out' is all the more amazing given that only eight years ago all discussion of homosexuality was banned in Tasmanian state schools unless it was about converting LGBT students into heterosexuals," commented Miranda Morris, a member of the Education Department's LGBT Issues Reference Group. "The Tasmanian experience shows that, as daunting as the problem of homophobia in schools may seem, it is possible to make a big difference in a relatively short time," she said. *Germany sees gay syphilis epidemic German health officials say there is a syphilis "epidemic" among gay men. The overall syphilis rate for the first half of 2002 is double the rate of recent years and the institute that compiles medical statistics says homosexuals are responsible for 60 percent of the increase. There were between 1,100 and 1,200 syphilis cases per year from 1995 to 2000, while more than 1,100 cases were reported in the first six months of this year. Researchers say there likely has been an increase in unprotected sex as improved HIV treatments cause people to no longer consider the virus a death sentence. But, they said, available data on reduced condom use does not explain the degree of the syphilis spike, and there has been no measurable increase in HIV transmission in Germany. The researchers concluded that much of the recent syphilis transmission between men likely resulted from oral sex rather than unprotected anal sex. *Jamaican gays granted British asylum Two Jamaican gay men have been granted asylum in the UK because it's not safe to be gay in Jamaica. The applicants presented evidence of threats, murders and machete attacks against Jamaican gays, as well as lyrics from pop songs that urge listeners to burn, beat and shoot "chi chi men," Jamaican for "faggots." Three of the nation's most successful pop groups, TOK, Capelton and Elephant Man, have recorded such songs. Gay sex is punished in Jamaica with up to 10 years hard labour. *MARDI GRAS RESCUED Sydney, Australia's bankrupt and cancelled Mardi Gras celebration has been rescued and will continue. Four gay groups took over the organization that produced the huge, famous gay extravaganza and will sell its assets to pay off debt. Volunteers will do what paid staff used to. *AUSSIE GAYS REPORT PINK CEILING Seventeen percent of Australian gays say their careers are at a dead end because of a "pink ceiling" in the workplace. Fifty-two percent of the 900 people surveyed say they have suffered discrimination or harassment at work due to their sexual orientation, and 21 percent said they were outed by coworkers. The survey results were reported by the organization Workers Out. *JOHANNESBURG GAYS MARCH Thousands of people paraded through the upscale neighborhood of Rosebank in Johannesburg, South Africa, in the city's 12th gay pride parade. Some marchers said the parade felt like a quantum leap from the 1990 event in the now predominantly black Hillbrow neighborhood, when some participants wore paper bags on their heads to avoid being known as gay. *COPS DENOUNCE PANIC DEFENCE The Canadian Association of Police Boards is supporting a resolution calling for elimination of the homosexual-panic defence, in which an anti-gay attacker is acquitted or receives a lesser sentence after claiming the person he attacked made a pass at him. The police boards also have called for gays to be added to the list of groups protected from hate speech and propaganda, according to a report in Vancouver's Xtra! West. A bill on that matter is pending in Parliament. *COKE TO PROVIDE HIV DRUGS Coca-Cola is to provide anti-HIV drugs to employees in Africa, including up to 60,000 people who work for independent bottling companies. Only about 1,500 upper-level employees directly employed by Coke had been eligible for the drugs previously. The cost will be split 50-50 by the Coca-Cola Africa Foundation and the local bottlers. Spouses will be covered as well, but children will not. So far, bottlers that employ about 25,000 of the 60,000 employees have joined the program, in Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Reunion, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. *TEL AVIV EXTENDS RIGHTS Tel Aviv, Israel, has extended various spousal benefits to gay couples, the daily newspaper Ha'aretz has reported. Same-sex couples will have access to discounts and benefits at cultural facilities, libraries, swimming pools and city events, the newspaper said. "The municipality will treat couples known to the public, including single-sex couples, as couples in every sense, and will confer to them the same discounts and benefits in public services which are provided to married couples," the new regulations state. The benefits are available to couples who live together and submit an affidavit of their relationship. *GERMAN GAY FUNDING KILLED The upper chamber of Germany's parliament, the Bundesrat, has killed $19 million in funding for the new Magnus Hirschfeld Foundation. The lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, originally created the foundation and allocated the money in June to fight anti-gay discrimination and compensate the gay movement for the destruction of its infrastructure by the Nazis. Hirschfeld is believed to have been Germany's -- if not the world's -- first gay activist. He founded the gay Scientific Humanitarian Committee in 1897. The Bundesrat spragged the legislation creating the foundation by sending it to a Siberia-like joint committee for further discussion. "We are back to square one," said one activist. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTSGAY VOICE FOR PERSONALS ============================ (We regret that this service is only available within the UK) To reply to ScotsGay Voice Ads, phone 09068 556613 (calls charged at 60p per minute) and use the number at the end of the ad.
