There is no cure for AIDS although the management of HIV infections has been hugely helped by people in this country infected by HIV having access to combination therapy. In developing countries HIV is not clinically managed, as it should be, and drug therapies are not available or easily accessed. In South Africa 1 in 6 women are infected by HIV. At the WOLA NANI project in Cape Town, for every one woman working in the project making beaded red ribbon awareness badges, they support on average nine members of their family infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. Prevention information and strategic responses to HIV that emerged in the 1980's to tackle HIV and AIDS need to be reinvigorated as, sadly, the number of HIV cases in Scotland is now the highest it has been since that time, the acknowledged height of the AIDS epidemic. A report on the dramatic increase issued by the Scottish Centre for Infection and Environmental Health states, "During July to September 2002, 71 new cases of HIV infection were reported". It is estimated that around 50% of HIV infections go undiagnosed. There is ample evidence that people are reluctant to have blood tests that can identify HIV infection because of the social stigma associated with this illness. Therefore the theme this year for World AIDS Day, "Ending Stigma and Discrimination", is an important message. Sister Athletica de la Bain of the Order of Perpetual Indulgence has compiled our list of WAD events throughout Scotland. Sister Athletica says: "These venues and organisations have generously given of their time and space to demonstrate their support and respect for people 'living' with HIV/AIDS in their local community. Your valued attendance at these fundraising and awareness events will show your committment to challenging 'Stigma and Discrimination' against positive people and I'm sure you'll have a great night out too! *HIV/AIDS AWARENESS PROJECTS AND LGBT ORGANISATIONS Aberdeen Saturday 30th November: Red Ribbon Ceilidh 8pm-Midnight at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel, Market Street, Aberdeen. Well it seems that there is indeed a God or, I should say, a Goddess and she has chosen to smite the false prophet Brian Soutar, check out the stock market and watch those Stagecoach shares fall! In another part of the forest, it seems that his Royal Lowness, not content with screwing the LGBT community, treats his bar and restaurant staff in the same shabby manner. While bar and catering staff generally are poorly paid, it seems his Royal Lowness also has a problem with basic arithmetic. His Royal Lowness must weep with gratitude every time Tory Blur and his spineless cronies fail to set a decent minimum wage in the United Kingdom. On that subject I would like to express my support to the brave men and women of the fire service. They are worth every penny of UKP30k of anyone's money. This issue, I can tell you first hand about Violate, so here goes. I went in a small group and met more friends on arriving; yeah, believe it or not, I do have some friends! I was welcomed by Bunny, one of the organisers, who was showing even more leg than me. The main bar is average size and was quite busy; it looks no different from a bar in a high street pub. Through the back is a much larger room with seating, a large dance floor, a DJ booth and video screens. The music switches between techno/dance and some decent rock. This is also where the male and female toilets are located. Upstairs are two further rooms and the kitchen, which serves up chips with curry sauce, included in the admission price. So, if you get an attack of the munchies there is no need to go in search of a chippy or indeed to fork out any cash. The main upstairs room is well lit and had a rack affair in the middle of the floor which various people made use of in a variety of ways during the evening. Anyone is welcome to take part and experienced members ensure nothing gets too out of hand. They will also instruct those who wish to learn different techniques. The back room was dimly lit and had a terrific luminous space theme decor - really trippy. This contained an upright frame in the centre of the floor for securing willing participants too. The atmosphere was generally friendly apart from a number of trannies with bad hair dos; sorry darlings but some of us have real tits! To be fair it is a little off the beaten track, but well worth the effort for those bored of the usual round of city centre venues. I shall definitely be taking up Bunny's invite in the future. Entry is UKP10 or UKP5 if you have an annual membership, which can be bought at the door for only UKP10. The dress code is fetish or dark and smart, so no neds in baseball caps need apply. Hopefully I shall see some off you there in the future. See Venues page for contact details. Further to my mention in the last issue of a new club taking over the Alaska premises on Bath Lane, the new club is called Mercury Lounge and I attended the press launch on Thursday 14th November. Good news for those affected by access issues: although upstairs is reached via stairs, the downstairs is fully accessible and has appropriate toilet facilities, unlike the Polo and Bennetts. There is also a pre-club venue called the Eye Bar on Bath Street, owned by the same people, as is the Art House Hotel, 129 Bath Street - unfortunately, access to this is down a flight of stairs. All three are LGBT friendly. I would certainly pay this club a visit especially if you are into hardcore clubbing; upstairs should certainly rock your boat. My hope is that it will also offer something other than the mindless synthetic crap that other venues think constitutes music. Only time will tell if this remains a place for grown ups or deteriorates to a kindergarten. I also attended a couple of the Annie Sprinkle GlesGay events at the CCA. No surprise that the show with the porn clips was a sell out while the discussion forum was poorly attended. Which is a shame as both were very enjoyable. I was unable to attend the workshop, however this also sold out, so I presume there is a demand for knowledge in the area of female sexuality. This will hopefully mean that Dr Sprinkle will not remain a stranger to these shores for too long. I shall certainly endeavour to attend in the future and of course will share with you, dear readers, my experiences. MacSorleys on Jamaica Street, has returned to holding a Jam Session on Sunday afternoons 2-5pm. This used to be a good way of filling a dead period between falling out of bed holding one's head and meeting up for more punishment on a Sunday night. If your taste in music leans towards real R&B and rock then this is worth checking out. Those of you interested in live music and real ale may also want to check out the Victoria Bar at 159 Briggait. A nice old-fashioned pub that the marketing men seemed to have overlooked, so no kegged fizz or neon lights. Now a gripe about music policy in pubs, clubs and bars. As I mentioned earlier, I was in the CCA a while ago. It's a Friday night and the upstairs bar is reasonably busy. Very mixed crowd, nice atmosphere and good conversation etc. Then the fucking DJ turns up, turns on and keeps turning it up! Now, please understand, nobody was dancing, there is no room for it. I spoke to a male member of staff and pointed out this fact. His pathetic response was that it was Friday night so they had to have a DJ. What complete and utter bollocks! By the end of the evening, it was impossible to hold any kind of conversation. What started as a really good evening was ultimately ruined by a blanket policy which was totally unsuited to the crowd and the location and by a DJ whose ego was boundless unlike his very limited talent. This combined with obscene drinks prices has definitely put me off going to the CCA! However, the CCA is not alone in forgetting that patrons buy drinks and pay bills not DJ's. It's about time that venues employed more intelligence and subtlety in defining their music policy. If it works for the likes of Wetherspoons then maybe a few more DJ's should be sent packing. A quick mention for the guys at Central Sauna who are holding a raffle to raise funds for the LGBT centre on Dixon Street. Some nice prizes on offer, portable TV, mini Hi-fi, CD Walkman etc... Tickets are only 50p for 5 chances to win. The Archive exhibition is now showing at the LGBT Centre. This is a fascinating insight into the history of LGBT issues in Glasgow and Scotland as a whole. Lot of great pictures and thought provoking articles and artwork. It runs until the end of January 2003. Well that's about it for another issue, as you can see there is plenty going on in the run up to the festive season. As always whatever you find to do: be safe. Angharad E-mail: angharad@drink.demon.co.uk -------------------------------------------------------------- Edinburgh/Dun Eideann ===================== Well guys. It's November and we say goodbye to Guy Fawkes and the Grim Reaper. World AIDS Day is fast approaching and all gay venues are working hard so a good night can be had by all. Before I carry on, it has been brought to my attention that I have an official stalker! Yeah you read correctly! Guess that makes me an official minor celebrity - well on par with the rejects from 'Hearsay' anyway! Edinburgh's premier gay venue Habana always works hard when it comes to charity events and if last year's is anything to go by (remember Blind Date!) this year's should be a hard act to follow! Habana opens at its usual time around noon on the first of December. Free food and wine will be available after the services, which will be held nearby to commemorate those who have passed away from AIDS. The real fun commences at 6pm with Cilla Slack providing hits until late from 60's, to the present day. Don't worry, all the camp classics are guaranteed but there will be something for everyone to dance to! Cilla's co-host will be 'Lady Samantha of Warriston'. Now, I am too young to remember this, but apparently she was the first lady' of the old Laughing Duck! Cilla and Lady Samantha will host a charity bingo and raffle. Excellent prizes and give-aways are guaranteed so make sure you buy plenty of tickets! DJ Cilla will later host a karaoke competition until late. Usual drink promos will apply on the night with some extra offers I'm sure! Throughout the night, safe sex messages will be emphasised and information on HIV/AIDS will be on offer. As well as having a good time getting pissed we mustn't forget why we are there in the first place, so make sure you ALL donate money and get yourselves involved as money is being donated to Waverley Care. The official fund-raiser for Planet Out will be held on Friday 29th Nov. The hosts will be Tuna Tirner, Birley Shassey and of course Ima Hoor. The bar staff are always keen to get actively involved and will be dancing under the name of Boyzown. I am sure that if donations were made we could convince them to go all the way and do a wee 'Full Monty!' Jen - the winner from Planet's Pop Idol contest and runner up Joe, will both be performing. A group song will follow with all the other contestants from the competition. Ima Hoor will draw the bingo balls and announce the winners of the charity raffle. Tickets go on sale for the raffle from the 15th of Nov at Planet. Red balloons will be available to buy with the option of attaching a message of remembrance. At 12.30am the balloons will be released hopefully with a fireworks display (bring some sparklers just in case!) On the day itself, Planet opens the doors at 1pm. The main focal point being that Ima Hoor and Big Bust Briony will be participating in a sponsored walk along Princess St in drag! Any one else wanting to join in be at Planet for 2.30pm! I also heard on the grapevine that if enough people sponsor her, Louise from Planet will wear a dress! Free food and wine is available from Planet 5.30pm onwards. Music wise I have just been informed DJ Roger has returned from his travels and will be providing the tunes and requests (for a small donation!) Craig and Andy from Hays Salon will be offering hair cuts on the day - for a generous donation of course! (Moket cows). I am not actually sure what CC's have on offer but you are all in there at some point during the week so check the notice board for details I am sure there will be something on! Everyone will end up there at the end of the night anyway! The Newtown Bar situated in Dublin St are doing their bit for Waverley Care as well: they are having a Caribbean Christmas party! Beachwear is the attire and a fabulous raffle will be on offer with generous prizes and give-aways. Drink promos will run throughout the night. I personally recommend the shooters - cheap and nasty! I must emphasise that women are now welcome and the place is not filled with fogies and bears! There is an excellent nightclub downstairs so break the routine and get along there to show your support to the LGBT community. In addition to World AIDS Day, Christmas parties are high on the agenda for December. The only I've got details for just now is Tackno's. The White Christmas Masked Ball takes place on Saturday 14th December at Ocean Terminal in Leith. Doors open at 10pm; Tickets are UKP12 and are available from Planet Out and Out of the Blue. DJ Trendy Wendy is on the decks with an eclectic mix of tunes on offer. Tease Tuesday is the name for the new revamped CC's on a Tuesday night. Madonna v Kylie was the theme for the launch night and it was fantastic. The music was as camp as Christmas, the drink promos were fab and staffs were fast efficient and friendly. Every one seems to be warming to the new door staff so things are as always looking up for Edinburgh's number one LGBT night-spot. Despite CC's proving to be a rival in terms of mid week partying at Vibe!, numbers haven't really suffered. I think this is due to more people coming out and floating between the two venues on offer for clubbing! An electrifying atmosphere with cheap drinks entices the public along to Ego from 11pm onwards. Alternative entertainment including Ima Hoor, Alan Cross and J.C from Jace Productions have all given renditions of various camp classics such as Lulu and Shirley Bassey. Alan and Maggie Joy have really provided the gay scene with a brand spanking new night which, going by the numbers, seems to appeal to all ages and genders. I have received numerous e-mails on the excellent music and welcoming atmosphere. Check Planet Out notice board or Habana for next confirmed date. The last was a Night of a Thousand Kylies and was an absolute scream with so much camp and cheese it was unbelievable! However there does seem to be limitations in the old drink promos and bar staff are neither efficient nor particularly friendly. The same goes for Vibe! - Ego bar staff could do to take lessons from other venues! No offence to the actual nights they are fab! The newest night for ladies is called Velvet and will provide entertainment for gay girlies and specially invited male friends! Velvet will take place on the last Friday of every month at Ego. Tickets are UKP6 and the offer two for one on entry before 11 30pm applies. Launch night is on Friday 29th Nov and will feature a live band called 'The Angel conversations'. Resident DJ Michelle provides the music with guest DJ's throughout the night. Cilla Slack's "Queerest Link" starts on Friday 29th October. To begin the quiz 'Stars from the Bars' will ask contestants to answer yes/no questions. The quiz will follow the same format as the TV series only more cheeky rude bitchy and camp - well it is a gay bar! Music follows after the quiz with DJ Cilla Slack. Thursday nights is still quiz night at Habana not that I need to tell you that as it's still as popular as ever! It seems that the next outing of Velvet Chains, God's spanky spanky goth club at the Laughing Duck, which was due to happen on Fri 29th November won't be happening until Friday 10th January. Not that God bothered telling us or anybody else. Our Editor only found out by chance. It's a good thing that God is not involved in the brewing industry! Last, but not least, a huge big massive thank you from Planet Out and myself to Jace Productions for giving the LGBT community a Pop Idol contest. Fun and frolics had by all with a few tears jerking moments. Well done to those who entered: the judges, the staff at Planet Out, and most of all, the public who voted and made worthy contributions. Rumour has it a Drag Idol will be the highlight of December so watch this space, or check out the notice board in Planet. Have fun over the next month. Please try and get as involved as possible with World AIDS Day. Donate as much money as you can and think of those who no longer are privileged enough to share the evening with us. Most of all, please pay attention to the safe sex messages and information on offer it's there for a reason. If you're pissed and going for shag remember sex can be fun - just be careful! Until next time take care of yourselfÉ .and each other! Lots of love Wee Alan, X E-mail: weealan@drink.demon.co.uk -------------------------------------------------------------- Letters ======= Time for T, or pass the sickbag! Actually T is about picking the youngest sweetest leaves for a fuller flavour. Seriously this article made me mad and sad in rapid succession. I am not T or TS or Transgendered, I am not a number - I am a free person. Whoops, sorry I keep getting these flashbacks, my therapist says they are nothing to worry about. I have a condition described as Gender Dysphoria, that is to say that my physical and mental selves are not in harmony. This I am in the serious process of remedying. Enough to be effective on our own, have you been sniffing the Harpic again? Our numbers are many and legion, no matter what self-describers we may resort to. Get with the program sister, wake up and smell the coffee. Grateful for what? I give at least as much as I receive from the LGBT community. While we are at it let me clear another couple of points, not so long ago a very acrimonious debate took place at the now LGBT Centre in Glasgow, over the future direction of the centre and its policy of inclusion. Until that juncture, not only was there no T, there was no B either. This is a very recent development and is still not welcomed by all. Furthermore the centre in Edinburgh is still constituted as an LGB Centre, with no sign of T being added. As to separating sex and gender as issues or subjects or tidy little pigeon holes: What a pointless division, we function as an amorphous whole, not as a collection of neatly defined functions. The article was fallacious and irritating and as such it would take a lot more than T to make it palatable. I suggest you visit the Archive show currently on and brush up on some recent history. Yours more in sorrow than anger, Fiona Jameson -------------------------------------------------------------- Scottish Media Monitor ====================== Everybody's Talking About Us, But We Are Silent, says Terry Sanderson Just when exactly did gay activism die in Britain? It must have been some time between the last but one vote on the age of consent and today. I, along with several thousand other angry gay people, stood outside the Houses of Parliament in London that frosty evening in February 1994, when MPs were to decide whether to lower the age of consent for gay sex from 21 to 16, or from 21 to 18. When the news came through that they had decided on the compromise, and that inequality would continue, a large contingent of furious fairies made a rush for the gates of the Commons. The great wooden doors were slammed shut just in time. If they hadn't been, there might well have been a riot in the lobby, with smashed statues, beaten-up Baronesses and prosecutions for treason. Before that, when the Tories had introduced Section 28, two massive demonstrations had occurred, one in London and one in Manchester. Lesbians had abseiled into the House of Lords and invaded the BBC's Nine O'clock News, much to the distress of Sue Lawley and Nicholas Witchell (and to the amusement of everyone else). These were heady experiences for someone like me who had been fighting for gay rights since first getting involved in the movement in 1968. We "veterans" had seen the gay movement transform itself from a small group of activists in London to a national force to be reckoned with. We pushed and paraded; we demonstrated and lobbied. Our campaigns were always imaginative and tremendously newsworthy. Gay Rights became one of the issues that dominated the late twentieth century. But in the last five years all that has disappeared. Now there is hardly a peep out of the gay masses. Stonewall is our official voice (although it is answerable to no one but itself) and sometimes it seems to have become little more than a department of New Labour. When Thatcher was in power, we had an enemy that mobilised us. But the advent of Tony Blair has taken the wind out of our sails in a big way. But although Mr Blair takes the credit for our progress, the truth is that he has had to be pushed into almost all of them. Whatever concessions have since been gained since Blair came to power have been given to us by the European Court of Human Rights. The Government may facilitate the progressive new laws, but they nearly all originated in Europe. Stonewall it seems is there just to dot the Is and cross the Ts. All the same, the last couple of months have been extraordinary. Gay rights have, again, been top of the political and religious agenda for most of that time. But gay people themselves have played hardly any part in these dramas. The Tory Party, for instance, nearly tore itself apart at its conference as it tried to reposition itself as the all-inclusive party of tolerance. The modernisers tried to bring the traditionalists into the twenty-first century. They failed. Ian Duncan Smith gave out mixed messages: yes, there's room for gays in the party he said one day, and the following day he changed his mind. Within two weeks of the Conservative Conference, the Party was putting a three line whip on its peers and MPs, telling them to vote down the amendment to the Adoption Bill that would have given gay couples the right to adopt. The passing of this amendment would have been a major triumph for the gay community, but the usual suspects stymied it. Where was the anger from the rainbow nation? Where were the demonstrations? Where was any indication of any concern at all among the general gay population? Although this battle was about us, we took hardly any part in it. Similarly, the Westminster Government - after being pushed into it by the EU - have formulated plans to outlaw discrimination at work on the grounds of age, sexual orientation, and religion or belief. This is long overdue, and protection of jobs has been one of the primary demands from gay people since Gay Liberation back in the sixties. Here it is at last, but outrageous exemptions have been granted to religious groups that will permit them to continue discriminating against gay people, and others of whom they disapprove. If you aren't a Christian (and a married heterosexual one, at that) you can't work for us - not even as a teacher or porter or cook or caretaker. This new law is not high profile, it's not sexy, it's not dramatic, but my goodness, it is vitally important. It is being introduced by regulation, which means it will not be subject to the parliamentary confrontations that we've grown used to. After the consultation on the issue is over, the law will be finalised and introduced without the familiar parliamentary procedure. It has to be in place by the end of next year. But who cares about this? Barring a few honourable exceptions - The Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association, The Equality Network, The Gay Christians - hardly a peep. Whatever its laws, Stonewall has declared it hunky dory, but I don't. So, although the gay community has done little to ensure that their rights are not sacrificed to protect so-called "religious freedom" (the freedom to have their unpleasant prejudices enshrined in law), the fundamentalists have been exceptionally busy. The Christian Institute and the Evangelical Alliance have been beavering away like maniacs to keep gay people out of jobs with religious organisations. Who cares? Only the committed few, it seems. The Church of England, too, has reached the point of schism simply because its new archbishop refuses to condemn gay people who "practise" their sexuality. Rowan Williams even admits to knowingly ordaining a poof at one stage in his career. The evangelicals are up in arms, saying that Dr Williams can't be a poof-lover and a Christian, and they are threatening to split the already ailing church into a thousand pieces. Once more, the argument is between heterosexuals (or people who purport to be heterosexuals). So, why is there is no mass anger in the gay community at the thwarting of progress by religious bigots? Why do we let them get away with it without a word? Do we imagine that all is well now that New Labour is at the helm? Do we think that they are gay friendly and will therefore take care of us? Or have we been seduced by the easy hedonism now that the pressure is off? Perhaps the gay community is simply reflecting society at large, where political indifference predominates. Fewer young people vote now, and interest in the whole political process had declined. We have a whole generation of gay people who have been free from the kind of crude persecution that previous generations have had to endure. The closet still exists, but getting out of it has never been easier for those who want to try. AIDS has receded to the status of a containable infection, and the urgency that attended it only a few short years ago has evaporated. We feel safe now, and we see no reason to be politically engaged. But let's not forget the recent Observer poll that showed that almost 25% of the population of Britain think that gay sex should once more be a criminal offence. The Christian Right is growing in influence, aided and abetted by governments in London and Edinburgh that are often afraid to oppose them. In some instances, particularly in England, the Government seems actually to be encouraging a greater involvement in politics by religious organisations. This is bad news for the gay community, but we shrug and turn away. Perhaps it will take another swing of the political pendulum from left to right to make us realise that many of the concessions we have won are fragile and can be easily reversed. By that time, our skills as effective campaigners may be lost. Author and columnist Terry Sanderson writes MediaWatch in Gay Times E-mail: otherway@dircon.co.uk Garry Otton is on holiday http://www.scottishmediamonitor.com/ -------------------------------------------------------------- Dundee/Dun Deagh ================ With World Aids Day fast approaching (1st December) it's a time when we particularly recall those we have lost to such a devastating condition. With so much stigma still involved, it is something we all wish to personally avoid. Well you would think so! Unfortunately some guys will not listen or blame the booze or drugs for doing 'unsafe' sex. Some, including this column, may blame the definite lack of condoms on the scene which we experienced for over a year. The supplies seem to have restarted but the education aspect, which Dundee led the way with previously, has been non existent. Surprisingly, groups who should be the community's voice to fight for better services have been unheard. So the Health Authority believe we are satisfied. Perhaps the fact that the same Authority gives Diversity a grant has made them less independent but should not make them speechless. Shame on you! Many compliments have been given to Charlie and Ian about the new ceiling they have installed and apparently that 'Shafted' is an arsehole. Whilst we all hope that unpainted pine ceilings will come back into fashion again it can't happen quick enough. What is it about the Dundee scene operators who start a job and don't finish it? Get the paint out Charlie and while we're on the subject, the toilets in the city's only club are still half done. We seem to pay the same price as straight venues but are not getting the same consideration. Come on guys, nobody wants to shag in a yuck cottage. Back from his holidays, Madame Grumpy was very cheery and brown. (It won't last. - Ed.) OK, so it was Mauritius and not the Maldives he went to, but does it make much difference to anyone? We hear he celebrated with a group orgy (yes, dear solicitor, we have checked the facts and shall name the group in our next issue). It has been a sexy time with others too and the women are also into partner swapping. As with the straight world, it is rare that all partners are aware of the arrangement. Whilst some of our community long for 'gay weddings', I think the function suite above the club will soon be booked for gay divorces. Loyalty and commitment are not in many gay men's dictionaries. Forthcoming events in Dundee are an appearance by pop group 3SL at Out. A Red Ball in the club for World AIDS Day. A Christmas party for Christmas and a New Year Party for errr New Year. We are only joking, as the Editor has finally got Brian to advertise so you can read his advert and we don't have to give a free plug. They seem to have a few interesting nights lined up and I fancy the Rear of the Year competition, but regrettably as an observer only these days! The Editor asked me to say something nice about Brooklyns and Charlie's. Why? Brooklyn is much busier, has great drinks offers, is now open seven nights and caters for karaoke a lot! Charlie's is still busy, has some drinks offers and caters for those barred from Brooklyn a lot! Sorry Boss, but I have to tell the truth! Merry Christmas to my reader! SHAFTED -------------------------------------------------------------- Aberdeen/Obar Dheadhain ======================= Hiya Bendy Boyz 'n' Girlz, welcome to the Grampian flood plains: as per the last article, it's still bloody raining! Although that hasn't stopped you lot enjoying the scene up here. The Scene Stuff: The staff and punters of Out Clubbing are still largin' it up and the club are catering for all you dance divas, promises of more live entertainment in the very near future, although no names as yet. New drinks promos for the coming month along with karaoke are still available; staff continues to give the club a welcoming atmosphere. Joyce please give me an update for the next editionÉ Ta. Jason at Fidel's is a wee bit lonely at the moment, cause you lot are not supporting the bar as you should. The drinks promos are still running and the formula for the bar remains friendly and inviting, so if you haven't been get yourself down to Fidel's and see if there is anything to tickle your fancy on the big screen, or have a bash at the karaoke. Still no go on the Castro's front, let's hope that we're back to three venues soon. (By the way Ed. You missed a real ale week in the Granite City, ended up drinking some pish from Arran, Yuck! Will stick to the Babycham me thinks!) Keep looking out for the Lashed dates as they are becoming increasing popular with some stunning theatrical nights, recently these have included the sacrifice of a virgin (yes there are still some in Aberdeen). Community News: At the PHACE Scotland offices in Aberdeen a press conference was held to launch a new initiative that will see greater support for the LGBT Community. Grampian Police have for the past few years been working in partnership with the LGBT community in the North East of Scotland, primarily through the LGBT/Police Liaison Forum, this work has culminated in the launch of a new joint initiative tackling hate crime. The Forum, which comprises of representatives of the Police, local LGBT community members and agencies. Together we have developed a poster campaign aimed at increasing the awareness of the LGBT community in relation to the support available to victims of homophobic crime. Assistant Chief Constable Pat Shearer commented: "This is an excellent initiative, which demonstrates the commitment of Grampian Police and the LGBT communities, to work together in an effort to tackle homophobic crime. Homophobic crime is totally unacceptable. Victims of homophobic crime need to know that Grampian Police, Victim Support, PHACE Scotland and Grampian LGB Switchboard as well as the other local LGBT agencies are taking this problem seriously and that support is available." Keith Cowan of Outright Scotland who attended the launch gave a national prospective on the work being carried out in the rest of Scotland, he said, "The joint working partnership between Grampian Police and the LGBT community is far in advance of the Central Belt, although Aberdeenshire and Morayshire councils need to develop their own LGBT strategies to complement the police work as previously developed by Aberdeen City Council." As the Chair Person of the Grampian LGBT/Police Liaison Forum, I am delighted at the initiative launch, the fact that we are launching the initiative in association and partnership with Grampian Police is of vital importance to the local community, it demonstrates the sincerity of the police to address the issues around homophobic crime. The campaign comprises of two posters one of which highlights the Remote Reporting Scheme and a Crime Reduction Poster supported by Crimestoppers, Grampian Police and PHACE Scotland. Personally I am looking forward to working alongside Andrea, (if I can keep up, she's just too bloody organised for me!!). Grampian LGB Switchboard are looking for volunteers who can give their time and commitment to assist in the continued running of the help-line. Thanks to Jamie Rennie of Stonewall Youth for braving the elements and being stranded at Stonehaven due to a landslide (after donning his heels and combat gear he bravely made it). Jamie gave an update on the Stonewall Youth developments. As always I am going to bore you by saying "It's your forum, come along and support it!!"
