Our ability to work together for the common good is often dependent more on personalities than any deep seated political revulsion at others' views. Nevertheless, there are a few issues which seem to divide us to the point where polite debate and acceptance of diversity become impossible for a sufficiently large number of people to make it almost impossible for any of us to debate the issue. One particular debate which I've watched for years, from the safety of the sidelines, is the position of Transgendered women amongst Biological women. T-women consider themselves to be women. Some B-women don't. And they don't want them anywhere near them. Which can lead to considerable problems when there is Women Only Space. As a man, that's not an issue for me. It's something that, ultimately, women have to sort out for themselves (which rather nails my colours to the mast in how I consider T-women). What may be an issue for some men is the growing number of T-men who are confident enough to be out in our community. In de facto men only space like saunas (and even a few pubs) is the presence of T-men something that ruins B-men's day? From my point of view: no. But then I don't have a problem with women (T or B) in such spaces. As long as they don't go into parent mode and tell me how to deport myself and live my life. There are men who do that and they are equally tedious. The society I want to live in is one where gender and sexuality are largely irrelevant to how we treat each other. Who we actually want to bed is a personal matter and the fact that all of my sex has been with B-men doesn't mean that the rest of the world isn't worth a fuck. All it means is that I'm a set-in-my-ways old poof (and that I have yet to be propositioned by a suitable T-man)! In glorious weather, thirty-one gay and bisexual men met on the banks of the River Tweed, coming from as far away as Glasgow and Kincardineshire. The locals were represented by eleven people from across the Border counties. It could have been a total disaster, as two inches of rain had fallen in Galashiels the previous afternoon, but in the event it was a scorching day. Men and boys enjoyed eating, drinking and making merry. Some people took advantage of the good weather to show off their bodies, but no one fancied a swim in the raging torrent that was the Tweed in spate. A good time was had by all. But it was not just fun: during the event a collection was made for the charity WaterAid, and the GBP53.10 raised will be used to help fund water supply, sanitation and hygiene education projects in Ethiopia and Nepal. Thanks to everyone that took part, and thanks for your generous sponsorship. LEGAL RIGHTS FOR SAME-SEX PARTNERS - ON THE WAY? Tim Hopkins of Equality Network reports On 30th June the London Government is expected to publish a consultation paper on civil partnership for same-sex couples in England and Wales. This will propose that same-sex couples should be able to register their partnership with the local Registry Office and get similar legal rights to married couples. Those rights include the right of partners to inherit from one another, the right to a share of your partner's pension, division of property if the partnership is dissolved, and recognition of civil partner as next of kin. What about Scotland? The consultation paper does not cover Scotland. Most of the law relating to civil partnership is devolved to the Scottish Parliament, although some important parts - tax and pension law - are reserved to Westminster. In Scotland, we have been victims of different election timing. While Westminster is midway between elections, we have only just had the Scottish Parliament election. For the whole of the past year, while the London Government was working on its proposals for civil partnership, the Scottish Executive was unwilling to commit itself even to consult on the issue, saying that that would need to be decided after the election. As a result, no civil partnership consultation paper for Scotland is ready to be published, and Scotland is falling behind on this issue. Given the Scottish Parliament's key commitment to equality, and the fact that the Scottish Executive includes the Liberal Democrats, for whom civil partnership was an election manifesto commitment, one would think that the new Executive would want to catch up as soon as it can. The earliest that a consultation paper on civil partnership could now be published by the Scottish Executive is probably September, and Scottish LGBT organisations will be looking for it not to be delayed further. Bills in the Parliaments Meanwhile, the London Government could be in a position to announce in the November Queen's Speech a bill to introduce civil partnership in England and Wales. That could mean legislation in place by next summer, or it could mean the stage is set for another big confrontation between the House of Commons and the House of Lords, following the three year stand-offs on the age of consent and on repeal of section 28 for England and Wales (the latter is still not through the House of Lords). The Scottish Parliament's legislative programme from now to June 2004 has already been announced, and there is no sign of the long-delayed Family Law Bill, which could legislate for civil partnerships. So the earliest we will see civil partnership legislation in Holyrood will be between September 2004 and June 2005, perhaps as much as a year behind Westminster. That could leave us with the situation where same-sex couples who register a civil partnership south of the border gain real benefits, some of which, such as tax and pension rights, they will keep even if they move to Scotland, while same-sex couples in Scotland will not be able to get those benefits at all. Perhaps there will be a reverse Gretna Green effect with same-sex couples from Scotland going to Berwick to register their partnership. The UK Government and Scottish Executive could then be open to legal action by Scottish same-sex couples complaining that their pension rights are restricted because of their sexual orientation, something that may breach the new European legislation on equality in employment. Action needed Two paths seem to be open to the Scottish Executive. The first is to consult on civil partnership in Scotland this autumn, with a view to legislating in the Scottish Parliament as soon as possible. Green MSP Patrick Harvie has already got 20 other MSPs' signatures on his proposal for a bill to introduce civil partnership in Scotland, but the Greens themselves accept that it would be much better for this legislation to come from the Executive. If there is to be an England and Wales civil partnership bill at Westminster in the next 12 months, the other option for the Scottish Executive would be to ask the Scottish Parliament to allow the Westminster Bill to be extended to cover Scotland. In effect, the Scottish Parliament would be asked to temporarily concede its power over the devolved parts of civil partnership law to Westminster. It did this over the age of consent in 2000, allowing Westminster to equalise the age of consent for sex between men at 16 in Scotland, even though sex law is devolved. Civil partnership is much more complex than the age of consent though, and there are important questions about whether Westminster legislation is the best way to get the right changes for Scotland, and whether the Scottish Parliament would be happy with Westminster taking on that role. In the meantime, the Scottish Executive is likely to find itself under increasing pressure to explain how civil partnership will be taken forward in Scotland. Tim Hopkins E-mail: tim@equality-network.org PRIDE SCOTIA The annual LGBT Pride celebration, Pride Scotia, will be held in Edinburgh on Sat 19th July. Gathering at East Market Street (behind Waverley Station) from 11.30am, participants will hear from a selection of elected representatives and dignitaries including out Green MSP Patrick Harvie, before moving off up to The Mound, down to Princes Street, along to Leith Street and finishing up in the Broughton Street area. There will be a Kids Space for 6 months to 10 year olds in Mansfield Traquair (12 Mansfield Place) from 11am-4.30pm (time slots booked on arrival). This will allow LGBT parents and carers freedom to attend the many other events being hosted by local LGBT venues and businesses. There's a Health and Community Fair which looks as if it will outgrow the original intended space in the Ego Courtyard - and Pride Scotia are looking for somewhere bigger. LGBT Youth Scotland will be running Youth Space in the LGBT Centre at 58a/60 Broughton Street. And there will also be SWAN Space (Self-identifying Woman Are Nesting) for those who define themselves as women. Most of the LGBT venues in the City are hosting events and some will be staying open even later than usual (Licencing Board permitting). WWW: http://www.pride-scotia.org/ EARRA GHAIDHEAL Beyond Barriers and PHACE Scotland are arranging an event called Sunday Social so that people from the Argyll area have a safe place to meet and mix. It will take place on the 6th of July at 3pm in a restauraunt in Oban: Cafe Nalusan, 9 Craigard Road. There will be a free buffet, a chance to meet other local people and to find out more about PHACE Scotland and Beyond Barriers. It has come about due to Beyond Barrier's research 'First Out' that identified Argyll and Bute as an area with few services and events for LGBT people. The organisers are also trying to work out what other events to run in the area and to see if there is enough demand for a social or support group in Argyll and Bute. Anyone gay lesbian bisexual ot transgendered is welcome on the day. For more details about the event or other activities in Argyll and Bute, contact Matt on 0141-332 3837 (E-mail: matj@phacescotland.org) or Nick on 0141-574 0242 (E-mail: nick@beyondbarriers.org.uk). ATTRACTED TO MEN AND ALSO TO GOD? I am trying to initiate a support/talk/study group, perhaps meeting weekly, for men of all denominations who have a belief in a higher power/source/godhead, and who, like me, are not finding him/her/it in organized institutional events. ABUSE Outright Scotland, the national LGBT campaign group, is petitioning the Scottish Parliament to ask the Scottish Executive to make their domestic abuse policy more inclusive. Their petition calls for the Parliament "to urge the Scottish Executive to develop its current, gender-based policy on domestic abuse to include all other forms of abuse that take place in a domestic setting". Commenting on the petition, Outright's Community Safety Spokesperson, Keith Cowan said, "The current policy deals with male abuse of female partners. We think that the work on gender based abuse is clearly very important, but we should also be looking at same sex domestic abuse, elder-abuse, forced marriage and the abuse that many disabled and dependent people experience. There is also the problem that many LGBT people experience when coming out. We believe that the Executive's public commitments to equality, diversity and human rights should be more apparent in its domestic abuse policy and strategies. We hope that the Parliament will respond to our petition positively and would encourage members of the community who agree with our position to contact there MSPs' to get them to support our petition." Outright Scotland's petition is PE644. Pic: Keith Cowan SAUNAT The opening of a new Glasgow sauna was delayed at the last minute. According to Club Eros owners, the steamroom wasn't completed on-time, despite promises from the contractors that it would. In the meantime, SPA-19 remains open. PRO NET A local Chapter of a network for gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexuals has been recently established. 6PC is an international network of "gay professionals", established in the summer of 2001. Membership is free and there are currently 1400 members worldwide. The purpose of the network is to create an international platform for the exchange of information, to get assistance on private or business matters, answers to questions, support, and friendship. The "professional" part could relate to Management, IT, Consultancy, Commerce, Finance or Marketing, but equally to Creative, Design, Internet, Landscaping etc. Members offer their professional and personal expertise and share their experience with their fellow members. The Network is dubbed "professional" but equally serves personal and social purposes. Although the network is virtual, a local group has been established and an inaugural dinner took place in Glasgow on the 21st. June. Alfred Verhoeven, founder of the network commented 'We are delighted that a local Chapter has been established in Scotland and we look forward to membership growing. 6PC offers a unique opportunity to network with similar people throughout the world and it is encouraging to see that Scotland will now have a bigger part to play in this." Sorry for the absence. I'm sure you've all been wondering what has happened to me (aye, right!) recently. Well, I've not been at all well, but I'm starting to get better. I want to issue an open invitation to all the tranny girls and boys out there to the biggest "T Party" in Scotland this year - Pride Scotia, Edinburgh, 19th July 2003. After Atomic-Kitten-Gate last year, a group of us have got together to organise a super-bash in the capital. A true "people's event". And we are very much part of the LGBT community, so let's get stuck in! TransAlba are helping to organise the Health and Community Fair on behalf of Pride, and we are also helping to establish a "place of safety for those who identify as female". Quite a mouthful I know, but I would ask all the T-girls out there to respect this definition. If you are a cross-dresser and identify as male, this is not for you, but if you do identify as female, you'll be welcome. Once again, please respect this space. Thank you. Talking about belonging to the community, which recently set-up and lavishly funded project has rejected out of hand all appeals to assist financially in the organising and running of this fabby event? I'll name no names, but let's give it the code word of "J9 plc." Perhaps in the future it might be good to remember this time, and support those who actively involved themselves, and shun the others! TransAlba now has a new E-mail address: transalba03@ aol.com And don't forget our helpline is open every Wednesday evening from 7-9pm - 07818 467512 or 07930 880410. Also, our support group will once again be meeting at Cafe Sala on Broughton St, Edinburgh on the third Saturday of each month from 2-4pm. Finally, welcome to Trans Man Scotland, a new F2M group that meets regularly in Edinburgh. A welcome addition indeed. Ladsaluvnstuff Andrea --------------------------------------------------------------- Letters ======= Dear Mr. Hein, No letter from America I hope this note finds you well. I called you about two weeks ago to request the removal of my name and e-mail address from your online text version of ScotsGay. What was written there does not represent me or my views and was sent to you as a "joke" by two friends of mine. Previous to this I was unaware of the magazine, but once e-mails began filling my box it came to my attention that this unsolicited prank had taken place. Your removal of this address from the text version of your online edition would save me tremendous headache as this e-mail address is important for much of my correspondence from the USA. I am sure you can sympathize with the difficulty this might cause for a person who did not give permission to have his e-mail printed in a magazine where a ridiculous letter was submitted in my name. Thank you for helping me with this, and for your time. Yours faithfully, John Rumple --------------------------------------------------------------- ScotsDyke ========= In May, Scotland saw the departure of DJ Michelle to the 'bright lights of London', a great loss to our Community. Michelle, originally from Liverpool, has graced us with her skills as a DJ for the last 12 years. Working her magic across the Central Belt, she has brought pleasure to many thousands of people over these years. Her loss will be felt greatly, but we do wish her well in this career move down south. The good news is that Michelle will continue to DJ in Scotland at a couple of Clubs, while commuting from London. The lucky clubs are Wiggle, Velvet, Joy's 10th Birthday Party and the 'Swan Women's Zone' on Pride Day. So catch her while you can before her career demands down south increase.I must say Michelle's leaving party was one hell of a night out and some of us are still recovering! Haste ye back Michelle... The trails and tribulations of Velvet Women's Club Night has seen rather troubled times recently with its host venue Ego going on the market. It seems that Ego has now been taken off the market for the time being, so hopefully Velvet will have a more secure future there. Ego has been the best venue Edinburgh's women's club has had over the years and the women are all very keen for Velvet to stay at there. At present Velvet has secured two more dates, on a trial basis, Friday 27th Jun with 'The Angel conversations' (see photo) and Friday 25th Jul with 'Impact Drummers'. Velvet has been generating great numbers since opening at Ego, and is a busy, popular and successful club with a trouble free, friendly crowd who are up for a good night out. If Velvet continues to generate enough numbers on these two dates they should secure a future at Ego. Velvet's numbers and bar take were never an issue until the club went on the market. Once this happened Ego wished to pack the place to the gunwales to improve the asking price! Hence the 'trials and tribulations' began. So ladies, if you value your women's club night vote with your feet and turn up to the next two dates to secure your future nights out. Jinx x --------------------------------------------------------------- Glaschu/Glasgow =============== Salutations and felicitations gentle folk. I'm sitting here wondering what to write and pondering those deep philosophical questions, like. If pigs could fly, would the price of bacon soar? How does the man who drives the snowplough get to his work? Is Ariel Sharon's favourite dish, Napalm fried white dove? If a Gay bishop in the Anglican Church is going to tear it asunder, how has the Catholic Church survived? If you carried out a genetic experiment to cross George W Bush and a Florida Valley girl would you end up with a rubber plant? Anyone wondering where this column is leading, quit worrying: only sheep need leaders! On with the motley: the next club Mystyx is due to take place on Sat 28th Jun. This is the first themed night and what else would it be but 'The Rocky Horror Show'? It is also the unveiling of the club's new purpose built equipment. Which consists of a double-sided St Andrews cross, a Pyramid frame with a lit base, and a Kneeler bench and a Spanking stool. These are all black with silver fittings, white soft rope and royal blue leather padding. All are welcome, tickets are GBP5 and available from Joys-4-Us in the LGBT Foyer. For those wondering there seems to be some slight delay in the opening of the new Club Eros, sauna and gym. Consequently SPA-19 remains open until further notice. So another thrilling edition comes to an end. Brought to a close with my usual wit and erudition! (look it up in the dictionary). The small ginger balding one is even more frazzled than usual due to organising Pride Scotia. So if you see him, buy the poor old bugger a drink. I'm off to get round the outside of a decent bottle of red wine or three. Any complaints or damning with faint praise to the usual address. Remember folks, whatever you find to do: be safe. Angharad E-mail: angharad@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- Dun Deagh/Dundee ================ A night of naked torso and flesh is planned for Out in Dundee on the first Fri of the Dundee holiday fortnight. Before all horny men head for the city, you should be aware of what this is. Females (as in the Lesbian type) are having their version of Mr Gay UK as the Miss Lesbian Dundee title is fought over like only the dykes know how! Hostess of the night and a good judge too is Suzi who has first hand knowledge of most of the would be contestants. With a late licence on the night (25th Jul) til 3.30 am it will be busy. Holiday times at the club mean it's open to 3.30am most nights. Giving us an extra hour to enjoy the DJ's music or not, as the case may be. The new line up sees the return of BP on Saturdays and we are promised some more upbeat music mixed on site. We hear the club is also looking for a DJ on Thursdays. Current drink promos have been helping the mid week numbers but Saturdays have got quieter. Charlie and Ian's expansion plan is still officially secret. The two have been sighted at a venue in Dundee, two in Aberdeen and three in Baghdad! Charlie's does resemble a straight bar at times and some scary people come in off the street - but that's enough about Flowerpot Colin. The classy pool table is now an attraction, especially if you have your own cues - if you need a tip! The local health services are reviewing how they satisfy the needs for gay men's health. They plan a survey to see what we think. If you fill in the form, be sure to keep a copy because, in a year, they will be conducting yet another survey to see what we think. They totally ignored the majority opinion and shut down Dundee Outreach Team - so forgive me for not feeling inspired. Former gadgy pub The Unicorn has re-opened. Gossip that two lesbians were running it has not been confirmed. It is so close to the harbour some gay trade may feel comfortable and profitable drinking there. Brooklyns Bar is still very busy most nights and the great drinks promos seem to help. It is going to open later some nights and have a second bar showing the camper musicals (that's what Madame Grumpy keeps on all those video tapes). Efforts to find out the timescale have met with a shrug of the shoulders from staff. So watch this space. Got to get back to sunbathing and chatting to the new neighbours' son who is off university just now - 'Summer Lovin' - hopefully! Shafted --------------------------------------------------------------- Obar Dheadhain/Aberdeen ======================= The short ginger balding one has been asking what's been happening out there in the gender bending north east? Quite a lot actually! We've been busy boyz 'n' girlz putting together the Pride in Aberdeen event, but more about that further down, so keep reading! The Scene Stuff Out Clubbing is still being refurbished (Madam Grumpy complaining about broken nails and paint in hard to reach places!!). A fun filled month ahead with a School Disco (will that include the use of a Lochgelly tawse?) in the offing. Following on from the successful Mr Gay Aberdeen event the club will host a Miss (Ms) Lesbian Aberdeen night on Friday the 18th of Jul. So if you think you're a Ms Butch, Luscious or Fetish get yourself down to Out and shake that booty! (Categories came from a lesbian friend-don't blame me!) Boy Band FY8 (support act for the Westlife tour, their website is http://www.fy8online.com.uk/) will also be performing in the club as well as guest DJ's. The drinks promos continue with Wicked Wednesday and VK Thursday 2-4-1's. So all in all busy, busy, busy! Sal's Bar underneath Out Clubbing is due to get a name change, a closely guarded secret! (Come on Madam Grumpy tell me pleasssseeeee!) He has asked me to pass on that the bar is gay friendly and everyone is more than welcome. Abacos on Market Street is getting quite a following with the gay crowd, Jason and Paul keeping things moving behind the bar whilst the karaoke and DJ keep the punters entertained on the other side. Lunchtime opening ensures there is somewhere to get a bite to eat during the day or maybe just a relaxing coffee in the afternoon away from all the pink pound spending. Lashed Aberdeen mourns the passing of this wonderful club night; the Last Lashed ever went out with a bang, a huge mix of styles and sounds from past nights and new bits thrown in. A large crowd danced the night away as Lashed kicked up its heels, (on a Nun and a prayer) confronted the Reaper face on and died! Is that a grinding noise I hear? Get off Mark, I'm typing!!! Yip the ole rumor mill grinds on, Mr. G's on Chapel Street is the latest name to pop into the is it or isn't it going to be the new gay club! (Why you asking me? I only write this shite!) According to sources the manager say this is so. But I need definites, so if you know for sure give me a shout! And on the C word (Castro's) who knows! Wellman's Health Studio the new gay sauna in the city is open! Based two floors above the PHACE offices at 21-23 Justice Mill Lane the large venue is bright and airy with excellent facilities. Now your intrepid reporter thought he'd better try it out just to make sure it was up to standard (honest!!). I can report that the sauna and steam room are fab (mind you me glasses didnae half steam up!) There is a range of hot and cold food and beverages, gym area complete with punch bag, (better than road rage) and a fantastic stand and tan booth for that all year round glow. The guyz at Wellman's are still waiting delivery of the spa but that should arrive soon. Lifetime Membership is GBP30.00 (includes 1st visit), then GBP8.00 per session and GBP3.00 for the Stand and Tan. Wellman's is open from 10am - 10pm every day so plenty of time for you to try it out. This venue is well worth a visit especially for relieving all those stresses and strains (will be using it loads, before and after writing this column!). For further information contact Ali on Aberdeen 01224 211441. Community News NELF (North East LGBT forum) next meets on 2nd September coz we're taking our summer holidays. On October 4th there's an open meeting to look at the way forward for NELF and to set up a PRIDE in Aberdeen Steering Group for next year's event. We are about to become incorporated as a company with charitable status limited by guarantee, that's a long-winded way of saying we're becoming a company! This will let NELF try and source funding for such things as an LGBT Centre. The Forum Board Members are still concerned that we do not have a large women's representation on the Forum. In order for us to access appropriate funding streams, and be totally inclusive of the wider LGBT community, will anyone who has come along in the past, or may be thinking about it, please join in. We don't bite (unless asked!!). That goes for you guyz too. PILLAR Aberdeen LGBT Group held its first anniversary Open Day last month with representatives from the Local Authority, Partnership Agencies and individuals. The day included representatives from Grampian Police, NHS Grampian and one half of our very own Queen Team John Stewart representing the Lord Provost. Pillar representative Michael McGregor said of the event, "thank you to every one who attended and who have supported the group in its first year, hopefully this will be the first of many such celebrations raising awareness of issues around mental health for members of the LGBT community." PHACE Scotland just gets more and more manic (OK that's just me!). Andrea has just finished her Grampian Needs Assessment for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS and passes on her thanks to all those who took part. The report will be available in print later on. The office Drop-In is still operating on a Friday from 12-4pm, so come along and meet the volunteers, have a coffee and pick up any info you may need. We also have back issue copies of all the scene magazines (including ScotsGay) and other resources. PHACE Scotland has a new Chief Executive Officer due to pick up the reigns from Susan MacDonald who's been acting up (as always!!) as CEO since Charlie left. Susan Douglas-Scott (another Susan...arghhhhh!) joins the organization from fpa Scotland (The Family Planning Association Scotland) and will take up her new role on the 14th Jul. We wish her all the best (crawl..crawl..crawl!!!) in what is a very challenging job. PRIDE in Aberdeen: Bet you thought I would never get round to it, (funny that nether did we!) so here goes!! The sun came out and so did all you lovely, beautiful boyz 'n' girlz. After many months of planning, blood, sweat and buckets of tears the 1st of June was upon us. The event was sponsored by Aberdeen City Council and Out Clubbing and opened by Aberdeen's very own Posh & Becks; Councillors John Stewart and Neil Fletcher representing the Lord Provost. We were rewarded with a crowd numbering around 3000 punters, who came along and listened to some fantastic live music performed by Lynn Sangster, Emma Forman, Lifeshade, Tenement, John Taylor, Intuition, Funk Tree supported by DJ's Lockhart, Tigger, Mr Man and Kustard with local drumming group Decibels filling the gaps The dance stage was well used for both dancing and relaxing, Many of the younger PRIDE goers took part in the questionnaires provided by LGBT Youth Scotland. In the afternoon PHACE Scotland's Grampian Project held its first ever awards ceremony. The awards are not the annual PRIDE Awards but were issued by the Project to individuals and organizations that the Grampian Project has worked with over the last 212 years. The Award recipients were: 1. Organisation in the Public Sector Promoting LGBT Equality and Challenging Discrimination; Grampian Police - the award collected by Assistant Chief Constable Patrick Shearer. 2. Volunteer Organisation Promoting LGBT Equality and Challenging Discrimination in Grampian; Pillar Aberdeen - the award collected by Pillar Board Member Michael McGregor. 3. Individual Working in the Public Sector Promoting LGBT Equality and Challenging Discrimination in Grampian; Babs Greenwood of Aberdeen City Council. 4. Entertainment Award to an Entertainer who raises the profile of the LGBT Community through music, dance or drama in Grampian; Lynn Sangster. 6. National Organisation who works to promote LGBT Equality in Grampian; There were 2 recipients for this award as it was impossible to split them, they were; LGBT Youth Scotland and Beyond Barriers. 7. The PHACE Scotland Grampian Project Award to an Individual or Company who through the excellence of the service they provide assists the Project; Elsie Pirie (Erotica Jiggles-she knows what we mean!!!). PRIDE in Aberdeen didn't just happen over night and it took a dedicated team to pull the whole thing together. Thanks to all those who helped to steward, perform, set up displays, catered, face painted, cut hair and organise the day, especially the PHACE Grampian guyz and girlz who stopped me throwing tantrums and hissy fits. They are, in no particular order; Leslie, Michael, Stephen, Bridget, Babs, Andy, Gary, Lynn, Andrea and the support from the PHACE team in Glasgow. This is the second PRIDE in Aberdeen event and plans are afoot to have yet another one, (oh ****** me!!). If you enjoyed the day and want to be more involved, come along to the NELF meeting on Oct 4th and sign up. Remember there is to be a Pride March on July 19th, in Edinburgh organised by Pride Scotia. As always be happy, be safe, use plenty of sun screen and remember, "Let's be careful out there." Mark Thomson markt@phacescotland.org --------------------------------------------------------------- Dun Eideann/Edinburgh ===================== Does any one else think that we've actually had some good weather this summer? Hope it stays like this, as preparations for this year's Pride are well under way and, in case you have forgotten, the extravaganza will take place on Sat 19th July. All venues are planning something, so there is no excuse to moan because everyone is being catered for! Another date for your diary is Friday 6th Jul. James Longworth (yeah the brains behind VIBE!) is launching a new night called BLAZE to ignite the 'Gay Weekend', at Club Ego. Is anyone else dead chuffed how there are more and more nights available for the community now? It does seem to be getting better and better - all we need to now is show our support and turn up! Every weekend I hear conversations complaining about how there is nothing to do blah blah blah...... new nights are on offer - it's just that so many folk are stuck in their ways that they are frightened to change their usual weekend. Anyway BLAZE is GBP3 entry but a cheeky GBP4 after midnight, so make sure you get there early. As it is the launch night the queue will probably be massive and will stay like that until the euphoria dies down (if it does!) Drink promos will be available throughout the whole night (does it piss any one else off when clubs have a cut of time for drink promos? What the fuck is that all about?) I think it is just all the usual crap i.e VK ices etc but some decent shots are only GBP1: let's face it, half of you will be pissed by midnight so you could be drinking paintstripper for all you know! Music will be the usual cheese i.e. Kylie (basically all the dancy cheesy stuff) seeking any more info? http://www.vibe-enterprises.com/ Enjoy! Big brother VIBE is still number one for midweek partying held at EGO every Tue 11pm-3am. Just over a year old, this midweek extravaganza has no fewer than 400 punters through the door every week. Now on two floors, James Longworth plays the tunes upstairs whilst downstairs is more R 'n' B. Every week there is an eclectic mix of performances from professional dancers and other cabaret type performers. This month I changed my drinking routine. Tired of listening to everyone complain about how shit our scene is, I have on purpose drank in every gay/gay friendly venue to check out exactly what Edinburgh has on offer! With it being summer, particularly for all you tourists who will be reading this and would like a mix of venues to check out! Not far from the 'Pink Triangle' is the Newtown (situated in Dublin St) This friendly establishment has been on the go now for a good ten years! With a reputation of being an old man's pub, a lot of you lot are too scared to go along just because you have heard from folk that it's where sleazy old men go! Well let me tell you all something - every gay venue in Edinburgh is packed with sleazy old men so get a fuckin' grip! Not that all old men are sleazy, I am not saying that all but you know the kinda guyz I am talking about... the one's that are probably married, have got pished on lager in the house to pluck up enough courage to go to a gay bar, and then spend the night drinking something like whisky in the hope that the courage will last the whole night to enable them to get a cock at the end of the night? Well all bars have this and if anything The Newtown is the one place where I have actually gone along to and felt safe. Don't ask me to explain that because I don't know how to articulate it! I think it's because it's not close to Playhouse, Mood, and that ridiculous monstrosity, the Omni centre I guess you could say The Newtown is exclusively gay? Yeah I think that's what I mean. The one thing that pisses me (and others) off is when the folk waiting to go and see shows come into the bars and turn up their noses cause it's a gay bar. Or when straight folk come in, realise it's a gay bar and kick off. The Newtown is away from all of this; it's cosy and is tucked away in Dublin St. The bar is always jam packed, the clientele is mixed, fair enough not a lot of chickens go but folk in their 20's onwards! Drinks are reasonably cheap (like myself) and downstairs is open Friday and Sat until 2am... I think.... The downstairs is the club part of the Newtown (Kaleidoscope) and is always busy but in saying that, it's busy, but not too busy that you feel like a sardine. It was refurbished about a year ago and offers a dance floor and all the cheesy camp classics. It's a nice safe space and if you just feel like chillin' with your mates, but in that club atmosphere, then there are these cool wee booths you can sit and chill in! It's a must if you are looking for an alternative to your usual weekend. Staff are always friendly and you aren't left standing like a tit waiting forever on a drink (unlike some other venues) Drinks are also more reasonable than other venues, special offers are the norm so check out the bar for more details. About two hundred yards along from the Newtown (in Howe St) is The Laughing Duck. As it has been on the go for a while now it needs no introduction! A real trendy bar, the Duck is busy most nights of the week. If you are looking for somewhere to eat delicious food at a reasonable price then the Duck is the place to be. Drink prices are normal pub prices and this bar is more for people wanting to chill and chat with their mates (ideal for a first date!) Scotland's only licensed gay store - Q-Store is open for business and is doing very well indeed. With a wide range of goods including: clothing, books, gifts and cards, magazines, videos and DVDs the list is endless. Get along to Barony St (beside the Blue Moon) and check it out! If you are going and think that the shop is closed because the blinds are shut and the door is shut, just go in as long as the sign is outside! I think the shop has to show an element of being discreet! While you are along that way check out the new non-smoking section in the Blue Moon! ('bout time!) It's a fab, proper trendy wee extension but I am afraid if you are still partial to the old cancer sticks, you have to stay in the older part of the Blue Moon. Just down the road in Broughton St is Sala, a trendy new cafe bar offering comfy spacious bright and trendy surroundings while you partake in the wide range of tapas available. Recent highlights in the Sala diary have included an Elvis night held on 14th Jun. Check out Sala for more details. More interesting news... JOY is moving from Ego! After 51 Joy nights at Ego, the venue has changed to The Venue! The relaunch date at The Venue is Sat 2nd Aug which just happens to be Joy's 10th Birthday! Tickets are on sale at Q Store and will also be available from Alan's new bar The Regent (opposite the Stag) and are GBP12 for a Joy member otherwise GBP15. The last Ego date for Joy is Jul 5th. The new JOY website is http://www.clubjoy. co.uk/ which also features a chat room. Alan and Maggie Joy's other successful night, Wiggle has confirmed its next few dates. Next one is Sat 19th Jul and features the usual DJs: Trendy Wendy, Jon Pleased, Sally F, and DJ Michelle. The venue (like you don't know!) is Ego. Entry is GBP9 and drink promos run throughout the whole night. The Wiggle pre-club capers with DJ Brett King takes place at Planet Out from 10pm - 1pm. And if that wasn't enough, Alan has another night - Mingin' - held monthly upstairs at Studio 24 in Calton Rd. The DJs are Alan and Brian Dempster; entry is GBP5 and GBP6 after midnight. Other confirmed dates are: Sat Jul 12th and Aug 9th. Alan's new bar - The Regent aims to open in the middle of July, along with partner Lisa (Luvely) They hope the bar will provide a comfortable and quiet space for socialising. Another alternative clubbing extravaganza that always has the funkiest flyers is Luvely. The next confirmed date is Sat 28th June. The theme is combats and commandos and the venue is The Liquid Room, Victoria St. Entry is GBP10. For further info - http://www.luvely.net/ Although we have been having nice weather (so the cruising areas will be heavin') The sauna business hasn't been affected at all. Check out Steamworks (5 Broughton Market, just along from the Blue Moon) this is Edinburgh's newest and most modern Sauna. With a large spa pool, steam room, dry sauna, labyrinth, and cafe on offer as well as much more you are really getting your money's worth in this exclusive and more importantly a clean sauna! Old favourite, The Townhouse, hasn't been affected by the opening of a new sauna at all, in fact it is just as busy! Having changed layout ever so slightly in the past few months, Townhouse offers a more traditional and luxurious space for clientele. Let's not forget about Number 18 situated in Leith Walk. Always the first to support charity events and donate excellent prizes this traditional and much neater sauna seems to be a real favourite and has hundreds of regulars (which must be a good thing). Staff are friendly and welcoming, and the usual stuff is on offer so go along and check it out. Habana have been doing their fair share of fundraising for Pride Scotia. Miss Cilla Slack provided transport for a group of volunteers to hit Glasgow's premier nightspots and raise money for the event. In total GBP306 was raised for Pride so well done guyz. On top of that, the regular and hugely popular quiz night held on Thursday evenings is donating half of the cash jackpot raised, which is a staggering GBP250. Half of the proceeds from the 'top, middle and bottom game are also being donated. Habana are planning a massive night for Pride so keep your eyes peeled when in the bar for details on what's going on. Miss Cilla Slack also sends her apologies but will be unable to host the Sunday Club at the end of this month as she has sprained her ankle on her heels (daft bitch!) However when she is fighting fit, themed parties will be held in Habana! Don't forget that all drinks are GBP1 Mon-Wed (9pm-1am). Planet Out is having a stomper of a fundraiser on Friday 27th June, in aid of Pride Scotia. Miss Ima Whoore plus special guests will host the evening's entertainment along with some special guest DJs for the night! Prizes and giveaways will be on offer along with drink promos and cocktails galore! Thursday night's Fruit Salad just keeps on getting busier and busier! DJ's Lemon 'n' Lime provide the tunes in Planet Out from 9pm and then continue the fun at FUN! Yup FUN! Is back at Ego every Thursday 11pm - 3am. Entry is GBP3. Yeah you know the score for other highlights mid-week, Monday's are Pink Pound with resident DJ Trendy Wendy, and Tuesday's are quiz night then pre-VIBE! Party with Big Gay Al! And let's not forget CC Blooms which always seems to be busy no matter what night or competition from other gay nights that are now on the go. Music is current dance floor fillers on Fri and Sat whereas during the week it's more past, present and future! The DJs are friendly and approachable if you want a request, and bar staff are fast, efficient and friendly. Karaoke is a favourite for every one taking place on Thurs and Sun nights. And who can forget CC Blooms Birthday Bonanza on Wed 16th Jul? Check out the club for more details on what is planned. Happy Birthday, Guyz! After some careful consideration Tracey Brown, former landlady of the Stag and Turret has decided to leave and pursue her passion at university studying accountancy. Having worked with accounts for years, she realised that accounting is what she wants to do. I have been asked to pass on thanks and appreciation to all who supported Tracey when she took over the Stag. We wish you all the luck and happiness in the world Tracey. X Well that's it for another month! Remember, I am not a fuckin' mind reader and don't always know what's going on in every venue, but I am more than happy to come along to any event or night, that's why my email address is at the bottom, so you can let me know what's going on! Lots of love and smiles Wee Alan E-mail: weealan@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- Scottish Media Monitor ====================== Garry Otton on Getting Our Priorities Right About Sex It's those bloody Queers again! During the Keep the Clause scandal, a 'pink mafia' was supposed to have been operating within Parliament to promote our 'demands' for 'special rights'. Gay people were apparently trying to 'push or 'peddle' gay propaganda onto 'innocent' children in schools'. Now we are supposed to be diverting the Parliament's attention away from more important work - like providing essential services for everyone else to focus on legislation for 'gay marriage'. Homophobic columnist, Gerald Warner in Scotland on Sunday whinged: "Unhappily, the application of the social inclusion doctrine to Holyrood itself has brought 13 Trots (not six, as was rashly assumed on election night, before the Greens revealed their true colours) into the cesspit of the nation. While McFondle (First Minister, Jack McConnell) struggles manfully to get his Crucifixion of Graffitti Artists (Scotland) Bill through committee, the Pinks' alternative agenda could prove a costly distraction. Beyond that, there lurk the problems of a slender majority, vulnerable to prima donnas, by-elections and downright blackmailers". Oh, aren't we Pinks a pain? It has always been thus in Scotland. It is a blame culture. When the Reverend Robert Kirk, a minister in Aberfoyle wrote 'The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies' in 1691, he claimed to be an authority on the subject. At a time when sex had been proclaimed by religionists solely for the purposes of procreation, parents were advised to close all the doors and windows at night to keep out the fairies who were blamed for teaching young men to 'waste their seed', tossing themselves off under the sheets. (It is said that Rev Kirk was spirited away by the fairies for revealing their secrets and now lives with them in the centre of Fairy Knowe at Doon Hill, near Aberfoyle. Children still tie their paper wishes to the trees). Talking of goblins, we are still waiting for ex-Scottish Sun editor, Bruce Waddell to take up the post as The Daily Record's new editor and I wonder what kind of treatment the Green Party's proposal for equality in partnerships would have got had he been in the executive, padded swivel-chair? The chemistry would've been just right for another Keep the Clause-type backlash. Left to their own devices, journalists at The Daily Record have been left playing with their balls through the holes in their pockets, trawling the Internet to discover "OUTRAGE AT GAY WEBSITE LINK TO BATHS". But whose "outrage" was it? And is anyone really interested in a gay man, sitting in the corner of a Turkish bath, drooling over the eye-candy? The Record gasped how: "a leisure centre is being promoted on a porn website as a popular meeting place for gay men". They discovered a tiny review of the Bon Accord Baths, run by Aberdeen City Council on a website called cumm.co.uk! (Anyone heard of this site? No, me neither. It's a site compiled by male masseur, Seb Cox, a former builder living in London's Aldgate East). So gay and bisexual men have been working up a sweat in the steam room! Oooh, whoopee-do! I don't see why a bit of eye contact, followed by some private and consensual argy-bargy, should give anyone sleepless nights. Since the report took exception to the fact something "indecent" had occurred in public, I'm tempted to ask who had done the complaining? Precisely whose "outrage" was now being grandly flaunted in the pages of The Record? According to the report, "it was revealed police have been called on at least one occasion to the city centre facility after a complaint about a man performing an indecent act". Only once? Considering how easily men reach for their dicks, I think that's pretty good going, don't you? The website review interestingly revealed there were 16 private rooms, so what was all the fuss about? From a nation that boasts a disgraceful level of heart disease, sex is a very good way of keeping fit. It's about time we recognised it, made space for it and stopped wasting good trees on sexually repressed drivel. Trawling for sex on the Net again at Ocean Quay the moral equivalent of making news-stories out of messages left on lavatory walls - was a site recommending "hotspots for wife-swapping". Like so many of these Internet sites, they are posted by individuals hoping to meet other like-minded people. It should have alarmed no one The Daily Record, on the other hand, appeared to pitch their activities as a direct challenge to the Family! "FAMILY PARKS IN WIFE SWAP SHOCK", screamed the headline. I was unaware that Mugdock Park near Milngavie and Strathclyde Park in Lanarkshire, (the latter popular for gay cruising), and "both popular with young families" was ever designed exclusively for the use of Families? It is, of course, a very useful way of promoting a place for such activities which, until The Record had got hold of the story, had no doubt been carried out with a good deal of discretion. The tabloid reported the author of the posting suggesting there were four car parks in Mugdock to use. "He then lists the car parks where swingers meet up, including one which he describes as 'a good daytime site' from where 'it is possible to get away to the great outdoors and hide'." Mugdock park manager, Ian Arnott appeared suitably outraged and "vowed anyone caught breaking the law would be stopped. He said: 'We are already looking at increasing security in the car parks and we will continue to work closely with the police to prevent crime of any kind in the park'." Central Scotland Police claimed not to be aware of any complaints of "swingers", but nonetheless promised The Record they would engage valuable resources in an effort to "step up patrols" since "people who engage in sex acts in public places are committing a criminal offence". The Sunday Mail were also reporting Strathclyde Police in Glasgow's exercise in moral policing: "Sixteen cameras will monitor Glasgow Green in an attempt to protect vice girls and to scare off men looking for sex". Where were the cameras for people who were mugged or attacked on Glasgow Green in otherwise completely non-consensual circumstances? (The fate of gay architect and activist, Frank Worsdall, author of The Keek Show and The Glasgow Tenement; a ferocious sixties campaigner who has done more than anyone to protect Glasgow's historical heritage, springs to mind). The men seeking sex with female sex workers will, of course, look for sex elsewhere, closely followed by the women. And the expensive cameras? No doubt, left vandalised and hanging from trees. Hey-ho! "BAN ME AND OUR KIDS WILL SUFFER", screamed Old Mother (Joan) Burnie from the pages of her respected organ, The Daily Record. In debating the Sexual Offences Bill, the House of Lords in England have recommended she be gagged along with other agony aunts from giving out anything but essential sexual health advice to avoid pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. That is a great shame for highly respected talented agony aunts like Anna Raeburn. Old Mother Burnie was, of course, in high dudgeon: "Schools do now provide sex education, but while it is useful, it's not easy to stick your hand up in class to ask Sir or Miss what an orgasm really feels like". Unless I've missed something, I don't recall this former convent girl, who once described sex as "a private matter", ever describing what an orgasm felt like. In the past, Burnie has recommended the burning of "porn", described a transsexual as "he, she or it" and chastised gays for making love outside while encouraging a straight female to go ahead and do it! "Believe me, M'Lords", sniffed Old Mother Burnie, "it's all about emotions and I for one will go on giving advice about it right up to the gates of Cornton Vale". You just go ahead and do that, old girl! And I'll be right up behind you, shutting the gate! The Renault Megane car ad has been banned by the Independent Television Commission from being shown in the daytime or early evening because a paltry number or viewers, eleven, in fact, said their children were copying what they saw and wiggling their bums! "The commercial features people gyrating to Groove Armada's song I See You Baby, which repeats the lyric, 'shakin' that a***'," as The Daily Record delicately put it. (Pissed is another word this delicate tabloid had problems with when Prince William suggested he might get drunk). 139 people complained about the Renault ad, still a dismal number given the overall number of television viewers. I'm not beyond questioning the usefulness of watchdogs. I remember all too well, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), dismissing complaints over the naked bigotry of the Scottish 'Keep the Clause' billboard campaign. The ASA's own code of conduct informs advertisers that particular care should be taken to avoid causing offence on the grounds of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or disability. The 'Keep the Clause' campaign went on to reach number eight in the ASA's top ten of the most offensive campaigns of 2000. Outraged Scots defaced dozens of these nasty posters. Wee kids might shake their arses, but the ASA just sat on theirs and did nothing! The editor of The Scottish Daily Mail, Tim Jotischky, an editor who has overseen some of the most vicious and partisan reporting of issues relating to homosexuals Scotland has seen, is leaving to head back down to London to work on special projects for The Mail. The Scottish Media Monitor awaits his replacement. Will that person be a man? Will he be homophobic? Will he carry a tambourine for the religionist's cause? Is the Pope a Catholic? I was very sorry to learn that religionists have succeeded in pushing through legislation that specifically exempts them from employment legislation protecting gays in a move that has been described as "something dreamed up by the Taliban". They have sought and won legal backing in the UK to discriminate against homosexuals in the workplace. Lord Lester himself a barrister has argued in the House of Lords that he was prepared to stake his reputation on the fact that these new regulations, that will become law on 3 December, would not survive a legal challenge and Blair's government would be humiliated. The First Minister, Jack McConnell too has expressed in interviews an unease with the power of the Church. Too little, too late. Garry Otton's book SEXUAL FASCISM is published by Ganymede Books priced GBP8.99. garry@scottishmediamonitor.com Read the papers, post your comments or search for material on the almost 1,000 hits-a-day SCOTTISH MEDIA MONITOR website http://www.scottishmediamonitor.com/. --------------------------------------------------------------- INTERNATIONAL NEWS ================== from Rex Wockner GAY TORONTO COUNCILLOR MARRIES Openly gay Toronto city councilor Kyle Rae and his partner of nine years, Mark Reid, got married at a downtown art gallery on Jun 20th. The province of Ontario's highest court legalized full marriage for same-sex couples on Jul 10th in a decision that took effect immediately. A week later, the federal government said it agreed with the decision and will open up marriage nationwide within a few months. Prime Minister Jean Chretien accepted the court's determination that banning same-sex marriage violates Canada's constitution, which prohibits any discrimination that cannot be "demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society." Ontario has no residency requirement for marriage and there have been many non-Canadians among the scores of same-sex couples who have gotten hitched since Jun 10th. One can purchase a marriage licence and marry the same day. "I'm hoping more Americans come up here and get married and erode the [U.S. Congress'] Defense of Marriage Act," Rae told the Washington Post. "I think as more and more Americans come up to get married, states will have a difficult time not recognizing a sovereign state's marriage license." The only other nations that let same-sex couples marry under the ordinary marriage laws are Belgium and The Netherlands. A dozen other nations have comprehensive domestic-partnership laws that grant registered same-sex couples most or all of the rights of marriage. DUTCH FUND UKRAINIAN GAYS The Dutch government has given the Ukrainian gay group Our World 170,000 Euros. The group used some of the money to buy an office in Kiev, the capital. The remainder will fund operations and pay four employees for two years. Our World lobbies legislators, coordinates local gay organizations, promotes tolerance and provides "correct information" on homosexuality, said the Kiev Post. "We're the first organization in Ukraine that's trying to be loud and visible," said the group's Andry Kravchuk. "And this has been good, because when we approached government bodies the first time around they were shocked. But the second time they were already getting used to us." The Dutch government's Social Transformation Program for Central and Eastern Europe has also funded gay groups in Moldava and Romania. BRAZILIAN TRANSVESTITES ARRESTED Police in Sao Paulo, Brazil, have arrested 145 transvestite sex workers in and around Indianapolis Avenue. Media reports showed the cross-dressers being beaten and forced into police vehicles. Police said the transvestites had committed robberies and engaged in sexual intercourse without condoms. The International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission took issue with the manner in which the arrests occurred, accusing police of using unnecessary force, violating privacy rights, and assuming that every cross-dresser found near Indianapolis Avenue had committed a crime. For more details see http://www.iglhrc.org/ MAYOR FORCED TO PROCLAIM PRIDE The mayor of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was forced to proclaim Gay Pride Week in mid-June, in violation of his Roman Catholic beliefs. Bill Smith acted after pride organizers filed a complaint with the Alberta Human Rights Commission -- a case the city was sure to lose and which likely would have resulted in a payout of damages. Smith refused to issue the proclamation for the previous eight years, provoking the Edmonton Pride Week Society to finally take legal action. "I want to make it perfectly clear that my personal opinion on this issue has not changed," Smith said. "I have been advised that if I fail to fulfill my legal obligations ... by my continued refusal to make this proclamation, the city of Edmonton would be liable for damages." BOOKS TO STAY BANNED The gay children's books "Asha's Mums," "Belinda's Bouquet" and "One Dad, Two Dads, Brown Dads, Blue Dads" will remain banned from kindergarten and first-grade classrooms in Surrey, British Columbia, a suburb of Vancouver, Canada. The school board made the decision this month despite a Supreme Court of Canada ruling in December 2002 that the board had erred in banning the books based on religious objections. In re-banning the books, the board claimed they are inappropriate not because they promote sin, but because of problems with grammar, punctuation, continuity and other matters. "The spelling of 'favourite' is inconsistent, switching from the Canadian to the American," board chair Mary Polak said of one book, according to a CBC report. KUWAITI TRANSSEXUAL CAN'T CHANGE DOCUMENTS Kuwait's Civil Bench of the Court of First Instance has dismissed the case of a 25-year-old woman who wanted to change her name on official documents after undergoing a sex-change operation in Thailand. The woman's lawyer said that although she was born male, she always felt female and now has "no manhood signs visible from the physiological point of view." SEXY CZECH GUARDS TO BE PUNISHED In need of extra cash, nine members of the Czech Republic's elite Castle Guards, who guard the president, stripped down to their army underwear and posed for a gay Web site. Now they're in trouble. The soldier who came up with the idea has resigned and the other eight men could be demoted or jailed for one week. PARTNER BILL INTRODUCED IN CHILE A gay partnership bill has been introduced in Chile's Congress. It would allow same-sex couples who have lived together for at least two years to enter a civil contract and have access to marriage rights in areas such as pensions and inheritance. The right to adoption is not included. "Our society is not that conservative," Congresswoman Maria Antonieta Saa told Reuters. "A small powerful group is holding Chilean society hostage because they don't want to reform the laws so that citizens have the option of choosing their own lifestyle." ITALIAN GAYS HIT HALF-WAY POINT Half of Italians consider homosexuality perfectly normal, a Eurispes poll has found. According to a recent report from the Agenzia Giornalistica Italia, the scientific survey of 2,000 Italians found that 49% consider homosexuality a form of love equal to heterosexuality, 33% can tolerate homosexuals as long as they're celibate, 10% consider homosexuality immoral, and 8% have no opinion or no comment. Meanwhile, about 40,000 people turned out for Italy's national gay-pride parade held in Bari on Jun 7th. A few eggs and tomatoes were tossed at the marchers. --------------------------------------------------------------- Film ==== In this country, the media appears to be totally without conscience about insulting celebrities. The editor of the Daily Mirror has admitted, "We like to build them up and knock them down". Liz Hurley suffers more than most. Channel 4 producers are so desperate for ideas they put out a long programme called "The 100 Worst Britons" in which several nondescripts insulted Liz. Maybe it is because she is reportedly paid fortunes by a cosmetic company who use her pictures in their ads across the world. Or maybe it is because she was known to live with Hugh Grant for years. During that time when he was caught by the Los Angeles police with a girl in a car giving him horizontal satisfaction and the press followed them for months, Liz showed incredible good taste by refusing to comment. After they finally parted company and she had an affair with a billionaire she went through the embarrassment of having him deny he was the father of her child. DNA tests proved he was, but she then refused to accept any money from him for their son. In public life there can't be many people with as much good taste as Liz Hurley. Unlike Mr Grant she has never had the right part in a hit movie to get the respect she deserves. She tries yet again in Double Whammy (15) a comedy about detective Denis Leary who injures his back and needs the Hurley hands as an osteopath to solve his problems. Even if she never gets the right part in a hit movie, because of her style and taste I will always be a Liz Hurley fan. When I saw the title 9 Dead Gay Guys (18) I knew the makers might not understand the meaning of the words good taste. I am sorry to say it opens in September. Can you imagine posters across Britain with a title like this? It has two straight young men from Belfast, poverty stricken in London, going to gay pubs to find mature clients who will pay them to be given "a blow job". Written and directed by Lab Ky Mo from Ireland of Chinese descent and produced by Lamia Nayeb St. Hilaire, it is their first feature film and I'm hoping will be their last. But they must have remarkable charm or a great deal of money as they were able to persuade actors with impressive backgrounds like Steven Berkoff and Michael Praed to appear in this rubbish. To learn what good taste is all about, they should track down Camp (15) that opens in August. Set in an American summer camp, it has straight and gay youngsters rehearsing musical shows as practise for them going into professional show business later. An experienced director coaches them and hit show writer Stephen Sondheim hears how talented they are and comes to one of their performances. New leading man Daniel Letterle is stunning and this is a movie well worth your valuable money. Those with strong stomachs will love Dark Blue (15), the toughest American cop movie of the year. Tired of playing nice guys Kurt Russell, looking more than two weeks older, is the most aggresive detective in Los Angeles. He is teaching his new dishy young partner, Scott Speedman, to be as hard as he is. And when you see the people they have to deal with, there doesn't seem to be any alternative. Kurt also realizes his superior is knee deep in police corruption. See this if your passions are masculinity plus. CURRENT RELEASES If anyone feels they had a hard time growing up gay they should see Trembling Before G-D (15) about how Jewish people suffer. While I approve of the closeness of their families, their gay teenagers are told they are not acceptable. Some consider suicide and others with intelligence put their faith behind them. It includes the first openly gay rabbi. A new version of Nicholas Nickleby (PG) must be on your list as it has Charlie Hunnam in the lead who is remembered by many as the blond teenager in the TV series "Queer As Folk". This young man has the potential to be a world star. Books by Charles Dickens make engrossing films and the plot of this one is known to enough of us not to relate it here. The extremely appealing Jamie Bell plays the suffering Smike. Its 130 minutes will hold you. Always impressed with our Charlotte Rampling who has lived in France for years I have tracked down her French movies and the latest is Summer Things (15) about people on holiday at Le Touquet. It is about gcabbing sexual opportunities and Charlotte's husband likes a change from putting females in his bed and turns to a black young man. It was no comfort to me to realize French guys have no more idea how to handle women than do the British. Miss Rampling is still a fascinating woman. Max (15) chooses to tell how the youthful Adolf Hitler struggled as an artist after the First World War before taking to politics. It is interesting because John Cusack, as art dealer Max Rothman, shines with such intelligence you can understand why women were mad about him. It is the directoral debut of Menno Meyjes who also wrote the clever script. I am hoping for his sake there are people out there who want to see part of the life of the best known mass murderer the world has ever known. I Commend the Metro Tartan company for importing documentaries you would expect to see on TV. Hoover Street Revival (15) should be seen by every priest and vicar in Britain who complains of dropping church attendences. It is a tribute to Bishop Noel Jones whose electrifying sermons at the Bethany Community Church in Los Angeles bring thousands of mostly black people to sing regularly. The French Etre et Avoir or To Be And To Have (U) follows the academic year in the lives of a dozen children between 4 and 10 taught by a dedicated teacher at a village school. As a frustrated father, I loved it. Cypher (15) has Jeremy Northam as an industrial spy who records the proceedings at rival trade conventions. It is interspersed with extraordinary special effects. My interest in Germany made me patient with Goodbye Lenin (15) although a story about a Russian woman with heart attacks which put her in a Coma for years did take much patience. It is for those of us who like stories of mother love as her very attractive grown up son is always with her. DVD WORLD A few years ago a video of Wolves Of Kromer was so popular it has now been issued on DVD and the young men in the leads in their latter teans are the reason. It's a fantasy with them playing wolves in the Welsh countryside who are hunted by rifle carriers. Fantasies are not my kind of film fare, but the guys in this kept me watching every one of its 115 minutes. The same company, Peccadillo Pictures, also have a German DVD with gay appeal The Trio about a father and grown up daughter who are professional thieves who fall out. They take up with a young man to help their business whom both fancy. After much drama the compromise is sharing him. The ILC company have imported two gay American feature filrms worth consideration. Urbania (18) has the very desireable Dan Futterman going through many sexual adventures in New York. Big Eden (PG) has a successful artist who has been living in the big city returning to the small Montana town he grew up in to take care of his elderly grandfather. Anyone living in our cities who returns to their roots will understand exactly how he feels. Malcolm Epstein Trembling Before G-d, Sandi Simcha Dubowski, 84 min If there's two things I've never understood the reasons for, it's organised religion and anti-semitism. How can any thinking person take either seriously? I therefore wondered what I'd make of this film about Orthodox Jews who are gay or lesbian. I don't think it had the effect on me the director intended. I spent the first half hour wondering what was going on, then I was reminded of the bit in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy where Arthur Dent is on the B Ark which is about to crash into the earth. He can't get his head round the way the others on board are reacting until eventually the penny drops and he says something like "You're all stark raving bonkers." The penny finally dropped for me when I realised that this lot were the same. I think I was meant to empathise with these nutters but that was not what I felt. Instead I found myself watching what appeared to be the most pernicious and effective piece of anti-Jewish propaganda I've ever seen. By focusing on these bizarre people and portraying them as typical of Jews one could begin to understand how similar propaganda and half truths could have been used in the 1930's to warp the minds of otherwise sensible people. Hitler had a lasting effect on the second half of the 20th Century in Western Europe - he made anti-semitism intellectually untenable - not quite what he intended. Dubowski appears to be trying to rehabilitate it - not quite what was intended either. Martin Powell E-mail: martinp@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- Theatre ======= Outlying Islands Traverse Theatre Company I'm developing a view that what turns a good piece of theatre into the truly magnificent is very much a personal thing. I remember the previous time I saw a play that had me going "wow" and unable to take my mind off it for all the following day - it was by Frantic Assembly if you are interested. After seeing that show I found myself down the pub and got talking about it to a bloke who had sat a few seats away from me in the theatre. I was amazed when he told me that he didn't think the writing was up to much. However I should add that this "bloke down the pub" has written two Fringe First winning shows, so maybe he was hyper-sensitive to the writing whereas I just soaked up the entire theatrical experience. Let there be no doubt that Outlying Islands, by David Greig, is the finest thing I have seen on stage in well over a year, and I've seen a lot of theatre over the last year. It is also one of the more difficult to review because so much of the strength of it comes from the way the plot twists and turns in unexpected yet plausible ways right until the very end. We also come to see there is much more to the characters than is apparent at the start. It tells of four people thrown together for a month on an outlying Scottish island. Ostensibly we have two ornithologists, Robert (Laurence Mitchell) is the more experienced, in every way, and reckless of the pair. With him is John (Sam Heughan) who is more cautious. They share the island with Kirk (Robert Carr) a man of the kirk, and it transpires the distillery, who keeps a few sheep on the island, but is he a mercenary man anxious to make any money he possibly can or a poor man doing his best to make a meagre living? I feel sure people will come to different conclusions. Kirk has a niece, Ellen (Lesley Hart), who comes from nowhere in the early part of the story to become one of the most complex characters in the whole adventure. However it rapidly becomes clear that there is much more to the island than birds and much more to the relationships between the four of them, of different types of people and how they react differently to events. Not necessarily better or worse just differently. It draws parallels with strategies used by different species to survive and how we as individuals cope, between savers and gamblers, birds that produce one egg but guard it tenaciously like petrels or those that spend nothing on the nest like gannets but hope something will survive. People who invest a lot in a relationship as opposed to those that shag anything on sight. This may sound deep and heavy, which is what I was expecting. What I was not expecting was that it would be riotously funny in parts. The direction by Philip Howard is brilliant and courageous. What makes it courageous is the use of long pauses. Not over long but noticeably long. Yet more meaning is conveyed by these pauses than any stream of words. Hell, at one point this superb team even manage to get a laugh out of a pause at an inappropriate moment. A simple yet effective set is plausible as an abandoned chapel yet can be instantly transformed by the actors into a cliff top. When you have great actors (I won't single anyone out), superb direction and a brilliant script great things are possible and are realised in one of the finest theatrical works I think I'm ever likely to see. After seeing it all I wanted to do was think about it. Far more interesting than a shag. I'll leave it up to the reader to decide if the final word of the previous sentence is a reference to a cormorant. Do see it if you get the chance.
