As you'd expect, I went out to Turnhouse to see Concorde make its last visit. It was an emotional experience for many of us who saw something we may never experience again. Now that the asinine decision to end Concorde's commercial flying life has been made, suddenly there appear to be insuperable legal and regulatory difficulties about flying the plane at all. In Glasgow, for years there has been the little matter of the trains which potter up to Maryhill, disgorge their passenger and then head up, empty, to Westerton so that they can cross over to the other line before returning to Maryhill and heading off again with their passengers. For years, the plan has been to re-open the line that runs from Maryhill to Anniesland so that the trains can terminate there and connect with services on another line. Legal difficulties have so far prevented this. Throughout the world, many people seem to have a good deal of fun on motorised skates. But not in Britain. The skates have got four wheels, so they come under the same legislation as a motor car which must have seats and seat belts. The law would have to be changed and meanwhile it must be enforced to the letter - so skate illegally on the public roads and you can lose your driving licence! It seems that a crowded legislative timetable prevents the law from simply being changed to allow things that most people would say would be a good thing(TM). But why does that timetable seem particularly crowded? It certainly doesn't help that the parliamentary term is shorter than the student one. And politicians seem to be able to afford to do considerably more drinking and other things that get in the way of work than the "lazy" students they so often disparage. So, why not a considerable increase in time spent in making and reviewing legislation? If the rest of Britain can manage with 3 week's holiday a year, why can't our rulers? Would longer sessions lead to more sensible law making? Who can tell. In addition to time, there has to be a political will. A "can do" attitude - something that doesn't seem to exist in our society at large let alone amongst our elected politicians. What's this got to do with queers? Quite simply, so much of the legislation which would greatly improve our quotidian lives is bogged down in the legislative morass. Or never even reaches the starting blocks. A war can be started in five minutes, but being nice to pooves, dykes and bicycles seems to take forever. Of course, I could just be talking nonsense, but at least it provides a great excuse to print a jolly nice picture of Concorde G-BOAE. The Scottish Executive and the Scottish Parliament are both asking the people of Scotland what we think about civil partnership registration for same-sex couples. The results of this consultation will affect the way that the Scottish Executive legislates for civil partnerships in Scotland. It is very important that as many LGBT people as possible let the Executive and Parliament know what we think of the plan for civil partnership legislation. The Scottish Executive published a consultation paper on September 30th, called 'Civil Partnership Registration - a legal status for committed same-sex couples in Scotland'. The paper contains proposals for new laws to allow same-sex couples to register a civil partnership and get similar legal responsibilities and protections as married couples do. The Executive is asking people to say what they think of these proposals - the deadline for replies is December 5th. You can find a copy of the consultation paper on the Scottish Executive website at: http://www.scotland.gov.uk/library4/JD/JD-BSU/00018315.aspx We also have about 20 printed copies in the Equality Network office - if you would like us to send you one of these, please E-mail us at en@equality-network.org or ring us on 07020 933 952. You can send your response to the Scottish Executive by E-mail, to civilpartnershipregistration@scotland.gsi.gov.uk or by post to: Scottish Executive Justice Department, Civil Law Division, 2WR, St Andrew's House, Edinburgh, EH1 3DG, or by fax to: 0131-244 2195. Please let the Executive know what you think of the proposals to introduce civil partnership. You don't need to give a detailed response, or to read the whole consultation paper if you don't have time. Your reply can be as simple as "I agree with introducing civil partnership", or as detailed as you like. Scottish Parliament consultation The Equal Opportunities Committee of the Scottish Parliament are also asking people what they think of the Scottish Executive's civil partnership proposals, and are asking for replies by November 14th. The Committee will then question the Scottish Executive Justice Minister, Cathy Jamieson, about the proposals, and will make recommendations to the Executive and to the whole Parliament. You can find a copy of the Committee's 'Call for Evidence' about the civil partnership proposals here: http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/equal/call/ceq-001.htm The Committee's recommendations will be influential, so please let them know what you think of the civil partnership proposals. You can send the same response to the Committee as you send to the Executive if you want. You can E-mail your comments to: equal.opportunities@scottish.parliament.uk or post them to: The Clerk to the Equal Opportunities Committee, The Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh, EH99 1SP. The deadline for responses to the Committee is November 14th, but the Committee are questioning the Justice Minister on November 11th, and so earlier replies will help them to decide what to ask her. Five LGBT organisations have been asked to give evidence in person at one of the Committee's meetings, on Tuesday October 28th. A week later the Committee will hear from the Church of Scotland, the Catholic Church and the UK Islamic Mission, and from legal experts. They will then question the Justice Minister, Cathy Jamieson, about the proposals, on Tuesday November 11th. You will be able to read evidence submitted to the Committee in advance of each of these meetings, and will also be able to read the Official Report of each of these meetings, on the Committee's web page at: http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/equal/ Papers for each meeting, including written evidence, usually go up on the web page on the Friday before the meeting, and the Official Report goes up two or three days after the meeting. The Executive's proposals The Scottish Executive's proposals are explained in their consultation paper. The basic proposal is for civil partnership for same-sex couples, with very similar legal effects to marriage. Civil partnership would be completely secular, with no religious element. As is the case now, churches and other faith organisations could choose to bless a couple's commitment to each other, but they would have no role in conducting civil partnership ceremonies. Civil partnership registration would be available to same-sex couples only. To qualify you would have to be unmarried and not in a civil partnership already. Civil partnership is intended for couples in a committed relationship. The registration process would be like a civil marriage and would be conducted by the district registrar. Civil partners would have similar legal responsibilities and rights to married couples. This would include a responsibility to support one another financially, and recognition as next of kin, and the right of a non-EU civil partner of a UK resident to live here with their partner. Civil partners would be able to apply to the Sheriff Court for parental responsibilities for each other's children. However, the proposals do not include the possibility of adoption by one partner of the other partner's child. Adoption and fostering law is the subject of a separate Scottish Executive consultation, and will be dealt with by separate legislation . A civil partnership can only be dissolved by application to the Sheriff Court. It could be dissolved rapidly if one partner is behaving so badly that the other cannot be expected to live with them (eg if one partner is abusing the other). Otherwise the partners have to live apart for at least two years before they can dissolve the partnership. On dissolution, the court can order a division of property, based on a 50:50 split, and can also make orders about residence and contact arrangements for any children of the partnership. These rules are all similar to divorce. When one partner dies, the other would be able to inherit from them, whether or not there is a will. They would also have the same rights to a survivor's pension from their partner's public sector and (in some but perhaps not all cases) private sector pension scheme as a widow does. The legislation needed for civil partnership is partly reserved to Westminster (pensions, social security, immigration, and tax law) and partly devolved (registration, dissolution, property, next of kin, inheritance and parenting law). Rather than have a bill in the Scottish Parliament to do the devolved parts, the Scottish Executive proposes to add Scottish legislation to a bill at Westminster for civil partnership for England and Wales. That bill could be announced in the Queen's Speech in the House of Lords in November, and introduced in the Westminster Parliament early in 2004. If it is passed by the Houses of Commons and Lords, civil partnership could start in spring 2005. The Equality Network's response Here is a brief summary of some key points in the Equality Network's response to the civil partnership consultation paper. You can find more details on our website here: http://www.equality-network.org/policy/CP/or E-mail or ring us if you want a paper copy of our detailed response. The Equality Network welcomes the Executive's consultation on civil partnership. However, the Executive should make it absolutely clear that it is committed to introducing civil partnership for Scotland, rather than just saying "if England is getting it, we need to do it too". We welcome the proposal that civil partnership law should be modelled on civil marriage law. Civil partnership should have the same non-religious legal effects as marriage. The consultation paper does a good job of listing (very briefly) the main legal effects concerned. We welcome the commitment in the consultation paper that civil partnership in Scotland will be based on Scots family law, not English. The two are very different, and the consultation paper contains a couple of mistakes where specifically English rules, which do not apply in Scots family law, have crept into the Scottish proposals. These need to be corrected. We remain concerned about the plan to allow Westminster to legislate for the devolved parts of Scottish civil partnership. The expertise is at Holyrood. The Scottish Parliament must have the opportunity to scrutinise and comment on the proposed legislation in detail. If Westminster makes significant amendments to the devolved parts of the legislation, the Scottish Parliament must have the opportunity to debate these and decide whether to approve them or not. We disagree with the proposal to restrict civil partnership to samesex couples only. Civil partnership should be open to mixed-sex couples also. Not to do this discriminates against mixed-sex couples, isolates same-sex couples into a special separate category, and will cause problems for transsexual people who change legal gender. We welcome the parallel consultation on adoption and fostering. The Executive should amend adoption law to allow same-sex couples to apply to adopt jointly, and to adopt each other's children as step-parent - these changes have already been made in England and Wales. Health matters Stonewall Scotland and the Scottish Executive have launched "Towards a Healthier LGBT Scotland", the most complete picture of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) health ever presented in Scotland. The project worked to identify the support needed by local NHS services to meet the needs of LGBT people. It also showed the particular health needs of LGBT people, the discrimination that can be faced when dealing with the NHS and made recommendations based on the findings. Alan Wardle, Stonewall's Director of Parliamentary and Public Affairs, said:- "This report shows that the NHS does not always meet the specific health needs of LGBT people in Scotland. We strongly suspect that this would be mirrored across the rest of the country and urge that such research is carried out soon." Findings included:- Health Service Access: 25% of respondents in a Scottish survey of LGBT people had experienced inappropriate advice or treatment due to sexual orientation or gender identity and 24% had experienced homophobic staff. Mental Health: Research investigating the link between suicide and sexual orientation suggests unusually high rates of attempted suicide in the range of 20-42%. Sexual Health: High levels of risk-taking amongst gay men and limited knowledge and information about lesbian women's sexual health. Gay men in Scotland are less likely to test for HIV than anywhere else in the UK, which already has low rates of testing compared internationally. Addictions: 75% of gay men under 36 years old have tried drugs compared to 47% of the general population. 80% of lesbians and bisexual women stated they had been affected by their own drug/alcohol use or someone close to them. Transgender Health: Mental health problems are a serious concern, but there is no targeted service provision. The report provides initial recommendations in 3 key areas. * Challenging discriminatory attitudes towards LGBT people in Scotland; * Improving accessibility and appropriateness of mainstream services; * Developing and supporting specialist services. Alastair Pringle of Stonewall Scotland said:- "This report provides much needed evidence into the health and well-being of Scotland's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered population. It is clear that the needs of individuals vary and it is vital that everyone gets access to the right health services" ILGA 25th ILGA-European Conference in Glasgow a great success On 15-19 October, ILGA-Europe hosted its 25th European conference in Glasgow at a crucial moment for LGBT rights in Europe. The conference theme, "Policy into Practice--making LGBT equality happen", attracted a wide and diverse audience, ranging from LGBT activists to policy makers, academics, lawyers, government and public service workers. This has been the largest conference yet with 26 workshops and 4 plenary sessions. More than 180 participants from 36 European countries gathered in Glasgow to explore the relationship between legislation and policy in areas such as policing, health, youth, disability, family and faith. ILGA-Europe delegates looked at ways to further strengthen the equality agenda throughout Europe. Anti-discrimination legislation such as the EU Framework Directive combating discrimination in employment is a vital first step in establishing minimum protection standards for lesbians and gay men. ILGA members, however, are concerned at the number of EU member states that still have done little to fully transpose the directive before the deadline of 2nd December this year. On the eve of enlargement of the European Union and in the midst of the Intergovernmental Conference, European LGBT organisations call upon the EU to stand by its commitment to equality. Much attention was given to the changing definition of family and the destructive role of the Vatican in this context. Whilst some European states are revising and expanding their understanding of family, others oppose this vehemently. Though the European Parliament has recently urged all EU Member States to open marriage and adoption to gay and lesbian couples, there has been no consistent recognition of same-sex relationships in recent legislative developments on asylum and migration or on free movement rights. The conference also looked at the increasingly important role of the Council of Europe in fostering LGBT rights beyond the boundaries of the EU. Going beyond the legal perspective, ways of translating policy into effective anti-discrimination work were highlighted. Also, in recognising that equality comes from social attitudes, not merely legislation, the conference agreed that action was necessary to counter discriminatory cultural attitudes such as homophobic song lyrics. The newly elected Board thanked the host organisation Stonewall-Scotland for a memorable conference and look forward to next year, when their hosts will be a Support Society for Gays and Lesbians in Budapest, Hungary. The theme of next year's conference will be Coming out to the EU, a celebration of the enlarged and increasingly diverse European Union. Conference also confirmed Paris as the venue for ILGA-Europe's conference in 2005. Velvet has landed and so has MTV! After an extremely successful launch night on 4th Oct at The Commplex, Velvet's new home, Upmarket Women's Clubbing on a Saturday in Edinburgh has finally arrived. On arrival at this impressive converted church in the heart of Edinburgh's Gay Residential Area, guests were greeted by the awesome spectacle of pretty girlies juggling and breathing fire! As ladies queued to enter Velvet's much publicised launch night they were wowed and warmed by these jugglers. Entering the club, friendly, well-trained staff greeted us with smiles and a free glass of bubbly. This clean modern spacious club is laid out on two levels that are sectioned into three individual areas. On the ground floor is the main bar area which is quiet enough to hear yourself think! The dance floor area is behind this large bar, seen through glass panels, and surrounded by intimate booths to snuggle up in. In interesting slide show was suspended below the DJ box and could be viewed from both floors all night. Upstairs is the mezzanine floor, which overlooks the dance floor, and is reached by a staircase running the length of the dance floor. This large airy chill out space is where you can chat, play pool or gaze down at the bevy of beauties on the busy dance floor. This interesting area is filled with big comfy couches, a second bar, pool table and two frosted glass booths for the Shadow Dancers to 'swing their hot pants in!' And swing these lovelies did. Elaine provided fluorescent Body Painting, and Jackie displayed her impressive 'Women at Work' photography exhibition. This entire visual spectacle is quite a refreshing change long may it last. I am assured it will, as more treats are lined up for all Velvet's future dates which are to be held on the First Saturday of every month, (except November it is on the 8th not the 1st). DJ Michelle and her guest Johnboy (aka Cilla Slack) got it just right with the new music policy and packed out the dance floor. The only improvements to be made there would be a couple of slow dances at the end of the night for all us hopeless romantics, preceded by a touch of Michelle's unmistakable upbeat modern edge, that would then have catered for all tasted admirably. Do you get the feeling I approve? Just a bit. The word on the street is that all who attended had a fantastic night and they will be back for more in their droves, so see you all there on the next date Saturday 8th November, not the 1st, it seems Velvet moved from the 1st to the 8th November so as not to clash with 'Drop the Anchor' at Ocean Terminal co-operation in action, nice one. Taxies queued outside the club at closing time, so we just fell out the door and into a taxi home, what a nice touch. The organisers have put a lot of thought into putting this together and it has paid off with droves of happy girlies. See http://www.club-velvet.co.uk/for more info. Festival Erotique Edinburgh is really hotting up with the arrival of 'Festival Erotique' an annual erotic festival to be held at Edinburgh's Corn Exchange, our lovely new purpose built Concert & Exhibition Hall. Launching very successfully on the last weekend of the Edinburgh Festival, with three days of 'Erotique' Exhibition, Performance & Events for adventurous, open minded, fun loving adults. It was an overwhelming success, with ticket sales far exceeding the organiser's wildest expectations! Check out http://www.festivalerotique.co.uk/for a look at what you missed. Jinx --------------------------------------------------------------- Arts ==== Well, there's quite a lot happening this autumn. In Edinburgh I'm really looking forward to the Rambert Dance Company, who I haven't seen since their new Artistic Director Mark Baldwin took over. They are appearing at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre on 5-7 November with what looks like quite a stunning programme. The main piece is Elsa Canasta by the Venezuelan choreographer Javier De Frutos with music by Cole Porter. Also featuring are 21 by Rafael Bonachelas which includes film of Kylie Minogue which will to say the least will be different; and Hans van Manens Visions Fugitives, to music by Prokofiev. Meanwhile November means it's time for the 10th Glasgay festival which has an awful lot on with something to appeal to almost everyone. Not just the few things I am mentioning here. Make sure you get hold of the programme or look at the web site (http://www.glasgay.co.uk/). Louise Welsh's The Cutting Room (Citizens) is having its world premier. Rilke is a gay Glaswegian auctioneer who stumbles across a cache of disturbing pornographic photographs from the late 1940s while clearing the antique-stuffed house of a rich dead man. What do they mean? Chesty Morgan: An Emotional Rollercoaster is an exhibition at The Tron. Seventies' actress Chesty Morgan 'exposed the big two' in the films Deadly Weapons and Double Agent 73 by cult film director Doris Wishman. This exhibition exposes Chesty's expressions from the films, and revels in a theatrical excess of human emotion. Another world premiere is Diamanda Galas in Frenzy (Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, 2 Nov), a concert dedicated to Aileen Wuornos, a lesbian prostitute who was executed a year ago for murder. On the same night The Stand has An evening with...Alan Carr. Described as a cross between Austin Powers and a young Eric Morecambe. The Politics of Fur (GFT, 3 Nov) has its Scottish premiere. "Not since Bitter Tears have power dynamics in a lesbian affair been given such a joyfully nasty and deliriously sexy treatment. Una is a girl with everything who is 'given' spiky punk rocker B as a birthday present - and Una's hooked. When B is immediately moved in Una's life becomes less 'controlled' than 'controlled substance.'" Talking of Bitter Tears, or The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant to give it its full title, can be seen the following night at the same venue. Fassbinder made this sketch of the currents of dominance and submission that lie beneath any relationship. Lesbian fashion designer Petra develops a fiercely possessive crush on her model Karin. As soon as the one-sided affair reaches its necessary end Petra starts wallowing in theatrical self-pity. The night after has the world premiere of End Game, Tom (Daniel Newman) is a cute rent boy, kept by gang leader George Norris (Mark McGann) in a swish loft apartment. George likes to mix his sex with violence. In The Wildebeest Lounge (CCA, 4 Nov) the resident pianist lapses from announcing requests into a dangerous stream of consciousness based on the notorious Scissors Murder. Next up, The Pandora Effect, is a wistful story of a small boy and the contents of a jewellery box passed from mother to son, and so on. Transphobia (The Arches, 6 and 7 Nov) is a raw compassionate piece about a group of Glasgow drag queens from new company Transphobia, created and performed by Russell Barr. Drag Queen Bernice Hindley tells a simple and incredibly moving story about a Glasgow underworld that will leave you reeling. This sounds very different from Adrienne's Dirty Laundry Experience (The Arches, 6-9 Nov). For the past 20 years Adrienne has been a professional scrubber, offering tea and sympathy whilst washing other people's dirty laundry in public. Some of her superstar clients include Amanda Holden, Les Dennis (though not at the same time!!) and that weirdo from Five Star who is obviously queer and looks like a sex change! Adrienne promises to penetrate you deeper and harder, and put the freshness back into your whiter than white life. The audience are required to come with a bag of dirty laundry. Gay Writes (Tron, 10 Nov) will allow people to hear some brand new gay writers, who have been meeting regularly for the last 9 months with Scottish writer John Binnie. Stories that are funny, touching, and original, which go towards defining what means to be gay male and living in Glasgow. Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (Theatre Royal, 13-15 Nov), or The Trocks as they are affectionately known, bring their fabulously entertaining brand of drag ballet to Glasgow for the first time. This all-male ballet company perform their legendary pastiche of Swan Lake alongside Le Grand Pas de Quatre, which is one of the most charming (and silly) evocations of romantic ballet. Get out there and enjoy yourself. Martin Powell E-mail: martinp@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- Feature: Looking for a Scottish Long Yang ========================================= Long Yang Club is the world's largest gay organisation that helps to foster friendship among gay Asians/Orientals and Western friends. It was started in 1983 in London, but there are now LYC chapters in over 30 cities, 12 countries and 4 continents. To find out more, visit the website at http://www.longyangclub. org/ Every year, it has an international convention where hundreds of its members and supporters from all over the world attend. It is called iCON. In 2002, it was held in Montreal, in 2003 it was in Paris, and in 2004, it will be held in Bangkok, Thailand (http://www.longyangclub.org/icon2004/). Some gay folk in Scotland feel perhaps it is time for such a group here. There are many gay Asians/Orientals in Glasgow, and to a lesser degree, in Edinburgh. Long Yang Club Scotland, as the new group would be called, would cover the two cities and the central lowlands. To start any new group, LYC's approach is to identify a team of persons locally to act as a Steering Committee. If you are interested in joining in, or wish to find out more, please contact Gordon by E-mail: scotland@longyangclub.org or Tel: 07748 183626 or Billy Wong by E-mail: silklink@longyangclub.org Initially, the intention would be to host social events alternately in Glasgow and in Edinburgh. Long Yang has been successful throughout the world - can it be successful in Scotland? We'll see. --------------------------------------------------------------- Dun Eideann/Edinburgh ===================== The biggest event of 2003 will take place on Sat Nov 1st. There are also various lunchtime offers on so check out the Cafe for all the details. The Lothian, Gay and Lesbian Switchboard Ball takes place on Fri 14th Nov at the Assembly Rooms in George Street from 8pm-1am. The theme is the Rainbow Ball, and there will be prizes for the most colourful costumes. There is a Ceildh and, for the clubbers, DJ Michelle will provide the tunes on a different floor. There will also be 3 bars, and a raffle. Tickets are now on sale from Switchboard or the Assembly Rooms. The ball is a fundraising event for the Switchboard to enable them to continue with their superb telephone support, sexual health promotion and befriending. Tickets are GBP 15 and GBP 12 for Conc. Hallowe'en took place on Oct 31st and most venues in Edinburgh had a weird and wacky night on. It is worth mentioning those who put on events in aid of local charities. Habana had a night in aid of Waverley Care. Miss Cilla Slack, provided the very best in a wide range of music, hosted the shindig which had the unexpected bonus of a visit from the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence who blessed the hostelry and presented a certificate recognising charitable work done by all at Habana. A big thanks to the following venues for donating raffle prizes: Townhouse Sauna, Number 18 Sauna, Guiliano's, and Tie Me Up In Edinburgh. Next-door CC Blooms held their evening on the Thursday before Hallowe'en in aid of Gay Men's Health. Down at the Holyrood, the plot thickens. Following a stowed out last night when the punters managed to drink the bar dry, the place duly closed only to re-open under the old management the following week. Mark claims that it is only a temporary delay and hopes to be out of the place by the time you read this. He's got a new pub in Aberdour, The Forresters Arms, which will open at the beginning of November and which he's asked us to list in the Venues! Meanwhile, popular staff member Liz is taking over the Auld Hoose on the Pleasance, and hopes to be open early in December. Three real ales are promised, which should be enough even for our editor! Wee Alan E-mail: weealan@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- Dun Deagh/Dundee ================ Biggest news on the scene of late has to be that Brian is selling up, so if you happen to have a spare 600 grand then you too could be the proud owner of a "City Centre Leisure Complex" with "Superb development potential" (source http://www.christies.com/. This includes Out, Brooklyn's and the newly opened Show Bar, along with a couple of less interesting places. A well done to Brian though for sticking with the scene in Dundee, strange to consider just up the road in Aberdeen the usual shelf life of a gay club is 2 years yet he has managed to keep the Dundee club going for a staggering eight. What could have been one of the clubs final big gigs last month never happened, as Hazell Dean was cancelled. Maybe she never defrosted in time from being cryogenically frozen since her last hit in the 80's or some such thing. Since this month's magazine will be out just after Hallowe'en, there is not much point in mentioning the various going's on at Charlie's, Brooklyn's and Out. I have the feeling I will be raiding the depths of my own wardrobe and digging out some of my old goth gear, and will tell all about how the night was next month. Usual drinks promos are no doubt still in force in all the places. As mentioned the Show Bar has opened within the past month, it's a cosy looking place reachable through a magical door in Brooklyn's. At the end of October, Diversitay held consultations in Arbroath, Perth and Dundee, along with LGBT Youth Scotland, Beyond Barriers and Gay Men's Health Tayside as part of their assessment of the needs of LGBT people in the area. If you missed these then there is still a chance to get your opinion in by filling out the questionnaire. You can get one of these by getting in touch with the Diversitay switchboard - contact details at the back of the magazine - or download it from http://www.dundeelgb.freeserve.co.uk/diversitay.doc Diversitay also hold social evenings on the third Wed of each month, not just within the Seagate area but more recently they have had successful nights at the Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre and the Rep. For more details of the next get-together call the switchboard, again details at the back of the magazine. Gay Men's Health Tayside are about to launch an outreach volunteer programme, I don't have exact details to hand but if you're interested in finding out more about volunteering for this organisation then further information can be found on their website at http://www.gaymenshealthtayside.com/or telephone Dundee (01382) 525255. I've still not heard anything about whether there is any kind of LGBT society at either of the student unions in Dundee. All I can say is that if nobody has arranged anything then Dundee sure is missing out on an important element in the LGBT community. The usual e-mail: courier_chris@yahoo.co.uk - for any comments or events significant to the LGBT community in and around Dundee. Chris --------------------------------------------------------------- Glaschu/Glasgow =============== Salutations and felicitations gentle folk. Well it is that time of the year again and by the time you read this Glasgay 2003 will be in full swing. As in previous years there is a very diverse selection of artists and events on show between 1st and 15th November. This will be the tenth year of Glasgay, which in and of itself is impressive, but it should also be remembered that in those ten years very many new voices have been given the opportunity to be heard. However now is not the time to sit back and relax. Glasgay and other events in Glasgow, in Scotland and the UK as a whole, now more than ever require your support. Only in this way will they continue to grow and, with that growth, the LGBT community will increase its influence in society as a whole. Increased visibility and recognition throughout society is ultimately what will lead to equal rights and consideration for all. You get to go out for a great day or evening and in the process you contribute to the ground swell of support for the LGBT community. Okay speech over, on with the motley. Having hopefully wetted your appetite here are some details of events happening during Glasgay. First up we have the Glasgay 10th Birthday Party at the Revolver Bar in John Street on Sat 1st Nov. Running 8pm-1am, entry is free and as usual drinks are reasonably priced. Next up we have a world premiere no less. Diamanda Galas performing Frenzy a concert dedicated to Aileen Wuornos a lesbian prostitute executed for murder. Do not expect a cosy night of sing-a-longs; do expect passion and insight. Okay on the 3rd November we have a Scottish Premiere, The Politics of Fur at the Glasgow Film Theatre. Not as one might imagine about loonies burning fur coats. Show starts at 9pm and tickets are GBP 4.90 and GBP 3.50. Tue 4th Nov sees Clare Teal and the Glasgow Jazz Choir performing in a world premiere at The Arches. Show starts at 8pm and tickets are GBP 7 or GBP 6. This lady has earned rave reviews and has received much airplay on BBC Radio 2 and 3 along with Jazz FM. A reminder that on 6th Nov, at the Tron Theatre, Rachel Jury is teaming up with BigWord, Scotland's leading performance poetry group, in LIPS Unleashed. To produce a delectable night of passion, rich sex appeal and lashings of lezzy laughs all washed down with the full-bodied musical accompaniment of Aqute Couch. The Vampyre Queen, Rosie Lugosi, winner of the Erotic Oscar Award for Performance Artist of the Year, three published collections and basqued avenger of radio and screen is a desert to be undead for! The show starts at 8pm and tickets cost GBP 6 and GBP 4 for concessions. http://www.aqutecouch.co.uk http://www.racheljury.co.uk Also performing on the 6th and 7th at the Arches in a show called Sisters, Such Devoted Sisters, is Russell Barr a member of a new company, Transphobia. A raw compassionate piece about a group of Glasgow Drag Queens. Show starts at 7.30pm and tickets are GBP 6 and GBP 4. The UGC Cinema presents a focus on the works of Todd Haynes, on the 7th, 8th and 9th of Nov. Featuring a different film on each night, Far from Heaven, Safe and Velvet Goldmine. The shows start at 8pm and tickets are GBP 5.90 and GBP 4.20 for concessions. Now here is something for all you closet culture vultures! On the 13th, 14th and 15th November the Theatre Royal presents Les Ballet Trockadero de Monte Carlo an all-male drag Ballet Company. This is no pantomime; these guys are the best in the business. Shows start at 7.30pm and tickets range from GBP 6 - GBP 20 with a 25% discount for the show on the 13th Nov. Well that is just a taste of the many events taking place in Glasgow over the next couple of weeks. Remember to pre-book where possible as some of these shows will sell out very early on. The Glasgay organisation can be reached on: 0141-334 7126, http://www.glasgay.co.uk/or E-mail: info@glasgay.co.uk So now to something a little different to liven up those dull Wednesdays New Flesh is now back at Destiny, 18 Cambridge Street, Glasgow. For more information contact: brian@cantara.demon.co.uk or gg@nakedtruth.co.uk; bedlamcorp@bedlamcorp.plus.com; http://www.bedlamcorp.co.uk It's some years now since Penelopes in Jamaica Street burned down - but I hear it's about to open up again. And with a bang. This is one to look out for! Along with these specific club nights are of course the usual suspects offering a variety of experiences from the traditional pubs like the Victoria Bar on the Bridgegait, who offer a warm atmosphere and a decent pint of ale. To the hot sweaty dance clubs like the Cube on Queens Street, on a Monday and Tuesday night for those who just do not want the weekend to finish and for those of you looking for something to do during the day. There is of course the CCA or the Tron Theatre. Or maybe you fancy dropping into the LGBT Centre at 11 Dixon Street and whiling a few hours away on a cup of coffee in the GLC cafe/bar. Whatever you fancy check out the listings page at the back for further details. Okay so that is it for yet another exciting issue, I expect the usual lack of feedback and general apathy to continue and so on that basis shall I. Remember folks whatever you find to do: be safe. Angharad E-mail: angharad@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- Scottish Media Monitor ====================== Garry Otton Explores the Dark Side of Morality It started with an appeal court judge ruling in July that ruled the common law of 'shameless indecency' obsolete in Scotland. This was closely followed by Gordon Darroch's report in The Sunday Herald. It was a good one; it dispensed with Catholic soundbites and filled the space with facts. I suspected that The Scottish Daily Mail would piss on his report, only, the tabloid doing the pissing turned out to be the self-righteous Sunday Mail! They didn't get round to the story until weeks later on Sunday, 5th October. "GAY SEX OK AT 14", they hollered. Brendan Mcginty no stranger to this column - gasped: "The bombshell ruling went by unnoticed", only to add: "The decision provoked uproar yesterday as critics demanded action to close the loophole". By Monday it was headline news on BBC Radio Scotland, superseded in importance only by Israel's bombing of Syria. Producers were bored of it by lunchtime and on Lesley Riddoch's phone-in, against muffled giggles and shuffling with a mike turned up over the sport's news, they turned to something else. Since the very government that endorses homophobia also licences the BBC, I suppose we shouldn't be surprised. The Scottish Daily Mail were so busy ritually banging their drum of moral fervour on other issues, they completely missed the boat on this one! Reporter Eddie Barnes frothed: "Teenage girls to deliver sex lessons in schools", calling on Catholic spokesman, Peter Kearney to declare that Caledonia Youth, an independent organisation delivering sexual health advice to young people was "pouring petrol on fire". The front page hailed "the biggest advance since the launch of the Pill for women 50 years ago: THE RISK-FREE PILL FOR MEN". There was news of further arrests in a "suspected paedophile ring" on the Isle of Lewis, a report on parents demanding more on-screen warnings of sex and violence on TV and the "devastating warning" to teenage girls from a mum promoting the idea that girls could be like her: a "born-again virgin". Once again, in the reports on the alleged lowering of the age of consent for gay sex in Scotland, the voices of gay people were nowhere to be found. No. There was one. Quietly tucked away in the letters' page of The Herald. The Equality Network's Tim Hopkins challenged Sir Gerald Gordon's interpretation of Scottish law as it was reported in The Sunday Mail. Yes, the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 1885, which considered gay sex as 'gross indecency' was scrapped in 1980. And although 'lewd and libidinous' conduct could be applied more readily to a woman having sex with a teenager than a man, there was still Section 13 (5) (c) of the Criminal Law (Consolidation) (Scotland) Act 1995. Add to that the laws governing assault and it's clear as the skin on a twink's bottom that Scotland is no chicken run! The Sunday Mail, on the other hand, saw a predatory gay man round every corner. "Ruling by appeal judges turns into a time bomb" shrieked Brendan Mcginty trotting out predictable outrage from the likes of the Catholic Church who demanded the Scottish justice minister move quickly to "plug this worrying gap", calling it "child abuse" that left "vulnerable young people totally unprotected". I would have thought asking the Catholic Church to comment on protecting kiddies is as insensitive as asking Fred and Rosemary West for their opinons on fostering. Mcginty warned that the ruling "could provoke a flood of appeals from men convicted of sex with underage boys", despite no evidence that proverbial opening of floodgates had happened or was ever likely to! Almost as an afterthought, McGinty added: "The ruling also allows grown women to seduce and have sex with 14 and 15-year-olds" even though he quotes an 'insider', a Scottish Executive legal adviser, who told him that sex with 12 to 16-year-old girls was still covered by laws governing 'lewd and libidinous' activity. Self-proclaimed babe-magnets, sex-hungry young men of 14 and 15, outraged by this attempted assault on their chastity, will surely thank Mcginty for helping them plug this gap! McGinty gratefully threw the rug off 74-year-old judge, Sir Gerald Gordon, and wheeled him to choke: "...Consenting homosexual behaviour between an adult and a boy of 14, which would probably formerly have been treated as shameless indecency, is no crime at all". But was this the same judge who admitted in the same 'report' that the lower legal age limit was "vague" and only estimated it as being 14. Claire Smith in The Scotsman declared: "Ministers are being called to introduce emergency legislation..." A spokeswoman for the Scottish Executive told The Sunday Mail: "We are reviewing the law and, if there are shown to be any gaps as a result of this appeal judgement, we will ensure that those gaps are filled". Let's hope and pray this is not the same Executive spokeswoman, whom, in the face of at least three recent non-consensual acts of rape of men in Glasgow, told The Sunday Herald there were no plans to reform the law in Scotland to protect them. Whoever the Executive claimed to be 'protecting' it certainly wasn't young gay men! Their priorities are not human rights but the sensitivities of our morally conservative media and their religious cronies. As I've said before, the outgoing moderator of the moribund Church of Scotland, Professor Iain Torrance is no liberal, I don't care what you've read in The Herald: "He outraged church leaders in Skye and Lochcarron by appearing to suggest in a newspaper article and a subsequent article in Life and Work that he was 'utterly untroubled' by the ordination of homosexual ministers". (Just so long as we don't ever get our end away)! Visits by moderators to presbyteries come around once every 10 years or so, the last time the then moderator, James Weatherhead was in these parts in 1994 he had expressed doubts over the literal truth of the virgin birth. He was barred from one pulpit in Lochalsh. Over the mere hint that these God-forsaken churches were at risk of a makeover by Ikea, five of nine Kirk sessions in the presbytery want Torrance banned! With echoes of the horrible Keep the Clause scandal that rocked Scotland three years ago, Rev Iain Greenshields from Snizort in Skye told Scotland on Sunday: "...We have had calls and e-mails from all over Scotland". James Glover dutifully crawled out from under a stone and wrote to The Sunday Times Scotland saying: "To elevate one sin above another, in terms of judgmental distaste, whether it be homosexuality, abortion, incest or whatever is the headline of the day, is to diminish the corporate responsibility we all have toward the evil that exists in this world". Rev Ivor MacDonald, minister of Kilmuir and Stenscholl was quoted in The Herald saying: "I would want to be satisfied that Professor Torrance regards homosexuality as a sin, and that there is recovery for the homosexual. I am not satisfied with the explanation that homosexuality is a given, that it is something we inherit and therefore there is no room for movement from homosexuality". Given that I know the damage such thinking has done, I want to know why action hasn't been taken against such naked homophobia at the highest level? Why is this man not been prosecuted? (Oh, sorry, I forgot, the First Minister was in Rome with the homophobe-in-chief Pope John Paul)! But who were these monsters? We have their names: Rev Iain Greenshields in Snizort, Rev Gary Wilson in Dunvegan, Rev John Murdo Nicolson in Portree and Rev Ivor MacDonald in Kilmuir. And God have mercy on their souls! The Vatican's decision to sideline conservative Mario Conti and appoint 'liberal' Keith O'Brien as cardinal had Scotland's media falling over themselves to remind everyone how hard-line moribund Pope John Paul II really was. What was the silly old sod doing appointing such a renowned liberal? (There's nothing like fanning the flames of Scotland's religious divide to sell more papers). A few oddballs and sideliners like the fundamentalist Catholic Truth magazine were called up to help fuel the debate. Nobody knew. The Pope, who had spent his life abstaining from sex and expecting all gays to do the same, had Jenifer Johnston writing of his meeting with the cowardly Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams and the Pope's determination to express his homophobia to him in The Sunday Herald: "He trembled throughout the speech, but was determined to read it to the end, although many of his words were muffled. The Pope seemed determined to make his feelings known..." The Daily Record confessed: "Unlike John Paul II, Cardinal O'Brien is a liberal on issues such as celibacy, contraception and homosexuality..." O'Brien had been reported saying: "Christ never said anywhere all his priests and apostles must be celibate" and calling for a "full and open discussion about these issues", including homosexuality, in an interview in The Scotsman. Dani Garavelli in Scotland on Sunday added: "O'Brien's mild manner, commitment to ecumenism, and open-mindedness on issues such as gay and married clergy have made him a popular figure both in and out of religious circles. His famous New Year soirees are attended by an eclectic group of people MPs and cabinet ministers, journalists, priests and judges all of whom turn up as much to enjoy his company as to network". I beg to differ. Putting aside for one moment this horrid religious nepotism polluting our democracy, this is politics in divine drag. Days later, with Rome in his sight, he was telling his flock at a lunchtime Mass how he intended to promulgate what the Church has been teaching on contraception, defend the law on ecclesiastical celibacy and was reported in The Scotsman saying: "I accept and promise to defend the ecclesiastical teaching about the immorality of the homosexual act..." O'Brien said he had been hurt by the allegations of liberalism. I tell you what... I'll show you hurt, son! Talk to some gay Catholics! The Sunday Herald was aghast: "O'Brien, who told this paper last year that he had 'no problems with celibacy withering away', insisted to the Sunday Herald yesterday that he 'would expect each and every priest to observe his promise of celibacy'. He added that he did not believe allowing priests to marry would solve the clergy's recruitment crisis". Ronnie MacDonald of Catholic Truth magazine told the same newspaper: "He's at it". Indeed he was. Scotland on Sunday reported: "Scotland's cardinal-elect has called for Catholics to become more politically active to attempt to exert a greater 'Christian influence' over the running of the country". He enjoys something of a head start. He has already arranged a private meeting with the First Minister, Jack McConnell in Rome. How about a meeting in San Francisco to discuss gay human rights for Scots, Jack? It doesn't surprise me that "THONG SIDE OF THE LAW", a report in The Daily Record, should have avoided carrying the name of who was responsible for it. Trailer trash journalism that displayed an appalling ignorance of transsexuals. Alexis Lang enjoyed no such anonymity, despite being reported asking photographers on leaving court: "Please don't take my picture". The photograph of "lipstick lout" Ms Lang accompanied the story of her appearance in court for breach of the peace and kneeing a policewoman in the leg. Had she been straight, the disturbance wouldn't have merited any mention at all, let alone almost a full page with pictures of her "lady's day" at the court. Our not-very-well-travelled "Record Reporter" (it's got to be a bloke) gasped how Ms Lang "appeared in court yesterday as a woman in full make-up". The contents of her handbag dominated the 'report'. "Alexander Lang, 35, wore lipstick, eye-liner, mascara, a gemstone pendant and hooped ear-rings". After adding: "He carried a black handbag, wore a ladies' trouser suit and answered gruffly to the name of Alexis," the 'reporter' was almost ready to get on with the story. Despite Glasgow Sheriff Iain Inglis interrupting prosecutor Andrew Haughney "more than once to insist that the accused be called a 'she'," the 'reporter' couldn't get the message and continued referring to Alexis in the masculine gender throughout. Despite this imposition, the 'reporter' attacked her with homophobic rhetoric: "He kept on screaming abuse..." Thank goodness they are not all idiots working for The Record. Marie Sharp, whose tragic story of Michaela, a 51-year-old transsexual whose body was found in Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens alongside vodka and an empty packet of painkillers, had no problem referring to her subject in the feminine gender. It was reported how "the former RAF mechanic committed suicide because she could no longer face the wait for a sex swap operation". The most touching statement was from her partner Richard Nellis who said: "I loved her for who she was not what she was". That would have gone over the heads of Record Reporters who were more comfortable with the headline: "PILL SUICIDE BLONDE WAS MAN IN DRAG". If the Scottish media, microfilmed in libraries, are to be kept as a record of all our histories, who will start telling the true story about the real lives of Scotland's transsexuals? Looks like I've landed the auspicious job of Aberdeen's Scene Scribe - and I hope I'm a good one at that! I'm stepping gracefully into the shoes vacated by Mark as he limps off into the sunset. Hope the foot is better soon Mark - we want to see you zooming around on the Nifty Fifty - or should that be motorised wheelchair? But first some serious stuff. I would like to echo Mark's comments about the scene. Aberdeen can support more than one gay venue on a long term basis. Not only is there a growing presence of gay and gay friendly venues in the city but there are opportunities for the gay community to pave the way for others to step out of the closet and feel that this city really supports them and is their home. They also plan events to include general drunkenness - there's a novelty. They meet every Wed at 9pm - see their newsletter or check out their new website http://www.icewag. com/LGBT/- and may I just say a particularly well designed site at that. Abfab for Aberdeen University students meet in the Queen Mother Library Foyer on Thu nights at 7.30pm and move on to the Illicit Still on Broad Street for 8pm. Some even make it to Bar Indigo before midnight - I know - I've seen them. Please check with your respective societies to confirm events. Granite Sisters is hosting another 4-2-9 Dance and Chat at the Arts Centre exclusively for the lesbian community on Sun 9th Nov from 4-9pm. Check out http://www.about2001.com/ NELF Ltd. held its first AGM and duly elected five members of the community to the board. The Forum's website is in the process of being updated and will hopefully list all the gay community resources for this area. New members welcome. The first Aberdeen Pride 2004 meeting was very encouraging despite the poor turnout. Okay we switched venue and it clashed with other meetings but hey - we're serious about it. The date and venue for next year's Aberdeen Pride is still to be confirmed but hope that we can announce it shortly. A costing exercise is being carried out to submit a budget proposal to the Council for some funding for the event. We need enthusiastic volunteers to form a Pride Team and support from businesses tomake this a success. If you're interested, the next meeting will be on Tue 25th Nov in one of the Committee Rooms at the New Town House, Broad Street at 7.30pm. The Pride of Moray group will be meeting towards the end of November - check Elgin's Health Promotion shop for details or contact those lovely lads at Phace on Abderdeen (01224) 587166. For those of you who like your culture, the Trocks are making a welcome return. This company of professional male dancers performs contemporary and classical dance and has established itself as a major world phenomenon. Their legendary version of Swan Lake will be performed alongside La Grand Pas de Quarte, which survives today as one of the most charming (and silly) evocations of Romantic Ballet. Along with their homage to the great ballet academies the sight of male bodies delicately balancing as swans, sylphs and water sprites, delights, amuses and serves the Trockaderos' original purpose: to bring the pleasure of dance to the widest possible audience - I'll be there. The show runs from Thu 20th to Sat 22nd Nov at His Majesty's Theatre - tickets from the Box Office Aberdeen (01224) 641122. On a slightly different note i.e. tuneful, a choir is once again being formed to sing at this year's World Aids Day Service. The service is being held in the Art Gallery around the central fountain on Mon 1st Dec at 7.30pm and this year's theme is 'vThe River of Life'. Anyone wishing to get involved should contact Leslie Hay at Phace. Well that's all for this month. I hope you liked my first article. If you've got news, drop me an e-mail or I might see you at a venue near you! Tivoli E-mail: tivoli_abdn@yahoo.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- Film ==== A phenomenon has happened. I would never have believed I would sit throuqh a film about a quy tryinq to commit suicide, but I did. Wilbur (Wants To Kill Himself) [15] financed from Denmark plus Scottish Screen and the Glasgow Film Office, and made by Danish writer and director Lone Scherfiq who sounds masculine, but is in fact female. Maybe that is why it is cast and made with such sensitivity. Edinburgh born Jamie Sives in the lead is so desireable you will care what happens to him. His brother spends his life looking after Jamie persuading him that life can be wonderful. They run a Glasgow second hand bookshop where the perfect brother constantly seeks girlfriends for him. From 5th December you'll see why. I stayed entranced for 109 minutes. Chinese and Japanese films with guys competinq with how high they can kick leave me stone cold. But the best Chinese film I have ever seen is Together With You about a humble Chinaman whose 13 year old son is a fine violinist who he takes to the big city, Beijing, to find him the best teachers. The excerpts from classical music are a joy to listen to. From 12th December you can see why their troubles had me in tears. If Shane Richie is our scene in EastEnders you could enjoy him in Shoreditch. It flashes between 1939 and today when a young man, Adam Ross, inherits a disused office block in Shoreditch and exploring the building finds the basement once housed the Say When jazz club that has been bricked up. He decides to reopen it and in flashbacks we see owner Shane Richie having an affair with his singer Joely Richardson and the consequences when war comes. The contrasting periods and a clever cast kept me interested. Because Richard Curtis wrote the brilliantly witty 4 Weddings And A Funeral that took Hugh Grant from a humble salary to many millions per film, I expected a fraction too much from Love Actually that Richard wrote and also directs. Huqh is a comedy Prime Minister trying to rise above a passing interest at 10 Downing Street in his tea lady Martine McCutcheon. A celebrity cast have romantic adventures some of which are not very funny, like Colin Firth on holiday abroad having a maid who doesn't speak English. Some rise above the material like the personality packed Emma Thompson. Some sink tragically like Rowan Atkinson. If we didn't know how incredible Richard Curtis scripts have been in the past it might have helped. I have to see everything Colin Farrell does as he strides manfully across the screen and he does plenty of it in S.W.A.T, an action movie meaning special weapons and tactics. His righting wrongs in the Los Anqeles Police is worth it if you appreciate his electricity. Offscreen, however, he seems to be at his outrageous best. Four letter words dominate his vocabulary when he admits to excessive amounts of drink and drugs and flashing his erection to emphasise points. Many of us would put money down for these performances. The opposite of a big budget picture is The Shape Of Things (15) with a cast of two attractive couples debating their lives. Only essential if any of them appeal. Laurel Canyon opens with the magnificent Christian Bale who happens to be a doctor stimulating Kate Beckinsale horizontally before taking her home to meet his mother record producer Frances Dormand whom he knows has had lesbian tendencies. While Christian works at a nearby hospital, Frances entertains her in their swimminq pool with her young lover Alessandro Nivola who also fancies her. All hell breaks out when Christian finds them in a compromising situation. To know how it was to serve aboard a British warship in 1805 you must see Russel Crowe in Master And Commander. Based on a Patrick O'Brien book it is the most authentic film on the navy in the early nineteenth century made since talkies began in the latter twenties. It must win academy awards for director Peter Weir and has to be seen on the big screen to get the full impact. Could be the best movie of the year. CURRENT RELEASES The bad taste of the script is why Gigli (15) is the flop of the year. It didn't help that to prove how straight he is on the BBC Film 2003 show Jonathan Ross blamed it on Ben Affleck. Ben and Jennifer Lopez are smalltime crooks who kidnap the mentally retarded brother of a politician and, to hurry the blackmail, their boss tells them to cut off one of his fingers to supply to the brother. Ben qoes to a mortuary to remove a finger from a corpse. On the credit side Jennifer and Ben have never looked more stunning. And some of their sexual dialogue even took my breath away. Worth sitting throuqh the bad taste if you fancy either of them. Bright Younq Things (15) is Stephen Fry's first directorial job and he adroitly adapts the Evelyn Waugh novel Vile Bodies onto film. The drunken or drug laden upper classes of the twenties and thirties are shown with amusing detail. Intolerable Cruelty has George Clooney as a sharp lawyer beginning to infuriate Catherine Zeta Jones as she attempts to shed a wealthy husband or two of plenty to live on the proceeds. The humour is watching how long it takes him to react to her considerable chemistry. Clint Eastwood directs one of the dramas of the year Mystic River in which Sean Penn's teenage daughter is murdered and old friends gather to investigate including Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon who is now a police inspector. Clint knows how to keep tension going. Denmark's leading lady Paprika Steen has been receiving best actress of the year awards for Okay (15) playing someone concerned about her father dieing of a malady. She has problems persuading her brother to forgive him as their father threw him out of the house 20 year earlier when he announced he was gay. DVD World Luster did so well on cinema release it is now on a Peccadillo Pictures DVD. Its cast of good looking American young men in a gay world happily talk about whom they are falling in love with. I was impressed with several storylines. An extra is the director Everett Lewis explaining his work and expressing admiration for the late British director Derek Jarman. Having seen previews of Mr Jarman's films many moons ago, I would have liked to have told Mr Lewis his work is much more polished as I have vivid memories of walking out of Jarman films creeping around the sleeping bodies of film journalists. Anyone who fancies lovely teenage girls will be pleased that the same company has issued Lost And Delirious set in a Canadian girls school. Teenage lesbians are eager to keep their secret from other students. It is a charming and gutsy story. One of the year's best movies, The Life Of David Gale is now on a Universial Studios DVD. This superb thriller brought Kevin Spacey rave reviews and this also has director Alan Parker in a 20 minute feature about the making of the movie. If suspense is your passion, the 1931 German classic M with Peter Lorre is now a double disk Eureka DVD that has been fully restored from the original print. The gruesome tale of a child murderer directed by Fritz Lang caused so much impact it launched Peter Lorre's Hollywood career. Malcolm Epstein --------------------------------------------------------------- Books ===== My Big Fat Queer Life Michael Thomas Ford Alyson Paperback GBP 9.99 There's nothing quite like a good funny book to lift my spirits and this one fits that bill perfectly. Even though it contains passages from some of his previous books (one of which I've previously reviewed here by the name of "That's Mr Faggot to You") this book had me literally howling with mirth. Ford is one of the best gay wordsmiths I've come across and fully deserved his four nominations for the Lambda Literary Award, two of which resulted in wins and if you are unfamiliar with his writings then you simply must get this book of his best bits, which are published here together with seven new, brilliantly funny essays. Chelsea Boys Glen Hanson & Allan Neuwirth Alyson Paperback GBP 9.99 Talking of funny, here's another one! This is a book in one of my favourite categories--one to have lying topmost on your bookshelf in the loo. What, you've not got one? Get to IKEA now and get one--every self respecting queer must have reading material on hand in that room! Right, now that you've got it up (the bookshelf, you dirty mind?) and sitting comfortably we'll begin. This is a comic strip outlining the outrageous antics and often wild sexcapedes, but also the everyday but nevertheless funny life's of three gay roommates living together in a three bedroom apartment in the heart of New York. The humour arises simply out of the difference of the three characters thrown together. There's Nathan, a cuddly 40-something native New Yorker, gorgeous art student Sky and last but definitely not least Soiree, a fabulous black club diva with outrageous style and a tongue that could slice ham. There's definitely something in this strip for everyone, which explains why it's been syndicated in over thirty publications worldwide. Scandal Marc E. Vargo Harrington Park Press Paperback GBP 13.99 And now for something completely different Here's a book offering a thorough examination of some same-sex controversies ranging from more or less unfounded accusations of obscenity and libel to espionage, treason and even murder. Some of the cases outlined in this excellent book managed to stall or worse, even reverse progress made by the gay and lesbian community in mainstream society. You'll find some stories of such eminent and well known figures as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean amongst others and they offer an often harrowing but nevertheless noble vision of the gay struggle. Ten Smart Things Gay Men Can do to Improve Their Lives Joe Kort Alyson Paperback GBP 10.99 Do we really need yet another book telling us how to live our lives. This book claims to offer solutions to the problems gay men face in their lives, but to be perfectly honest, I did not find anything within the pages of this book that was anything more then simple common sense. As far as I am concerned it just re-affirmed my notion that therapy, even if the names are followed by the letters MA, MSW and ACSW is just so much bull Affirmative Gay Relationships Neil Kaminsky Harrington Park Press Paperback GBP 9.99 Well, what can I say that is in any way different to the above review, yet another book full of things you already know, don't bother... Ambidextrous Felice Picano Harrington Park Press Paperback GBP 9.99 This book brought back some memories. It was a book by this author that first made me aware that gay fiction existed. Brilliantly written, outrageously funny and deeply sad this book will test the whole gamut of your emotions to breaking point. It'll conjure up memories of your adolescence and evoke the years thinking of bicycles, boners and book reports. I've no idea why, but this book was considered so scandalous at the time that the first shipment to Britain was seized and burned on the London docks. It's a real classic and worthy of this much welcomed re-release. Raw Recruits Edited by John Patrick Starbooks Paperback GBP 11.99 Here is a book in the one handed reading category and, as far as I'm concerned, the best editor of this genre is good old John Patrick. This is an anthology of writings by himself and other noted authors of gay erotic fiction like Ken Smith, V.L. Peterson and Christopher Thomas to give us an insight into the delicious delights of Army Camp, where the only thing better than a boy in uniform is getting a boy out of one. Dirk Kriete Adam Anthony McDonald Gay Men's Press Paperback GBP 9.99 I took two books with me to Paris the other week and this one was actually set in France - a modern coming of age with a twist. It even had some eye and trouser moistening episodes. But what did disturb me was the probably accurate reflection of young people's crap risk assessment when it comes to practicing safer sex. The other book? HA Vallance's excellent history of the Great North of Scotland Railway - true erotica for those of us into this genre! Justin Milne --------------------------------------------------------------- International News from Rex Wockner =================================== GAY GAMES ORGANIZERS ARGUE The Federation of Gay Games (FGG) and the Montreal 2006 organizing committee are arguing about plans for the next gay olympics. Montreal wanted to bring in as many as 24,000 athletes but FGG wanted to limit participants to as few as 10,000 to save money. After negotiations, Montreal reduced its number to as few as 16,000 but the FGG will go no higher than 12,000 as an initial goal. In a second area of disagreement, although Montreal organizers have lined up extensive public and private funding, FGG allegedly wants to control all financial details. "Fundamentally there's an issue of vision which includes number of participants, size of budget and the issue of control," said Montreal organizer and Olympic gold medalist Mark Tewksbury. "I empathize with the deficits of past games but, at the same time, we believe we have a vision that could really change things. We've done the math and we need 15,540 participants to break even. "This is a turning point for the Gay Games movement, or a crisis, since the last four games have lost money," Tewksbury said. "They are dealing with the challenge in their own way, we just have a very different vision of how to deal with it. It would be irresponsible of us to plan for a games smaller than our break-even point." FGG Co-president Kathleen Webster said the federation simply doesn't want Montreal organizers to make promises they can't keep, resulting in the Gay Games ending up in debt for the fifth time in a row. "We have four host organizations that have ended up in bankruptcy leaving a legacy of debt," she said. "It's our job to do something now to break this cycle of financial failure. INDIANS STAGE FILM FESTIVAL Around 200 people turned out to see 40 films at India's first gay film festival held in Bombay recently. The "Tremors of a Revolution" festival was staged in a university auditorium on the outskirts of the city. GAY WEDDING CHAPEL DESTROYED The Russian Orthodox chapel in which the nation's first same-sex wedding was conducted has been demolished after local church leaders determined it had been desecrated. The Chapel of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, in Nizhny Novgorod, was torn down after Father Vladimir Enert accepted $450 to marry Denis Gogolev, 27, and Mikhail Morozov, 23, on Sep 1st. Enert was defrocked over the incident. Nizhny Novgorod, previously named Gorky, is 248 miles east of Moscow. It is Russia's third-largest city. 85% OF SYDNEY GAYS SUFFER ANTI-GAY ABUSE A new study by the New South Wales state attorney general finds that 85 percent of Sydney homosexuals have experienced homophobic abuse, harassment or violence, and half of them have experienced it in the past year. Verbal abuse was the most common problem, followed by offensive gestures, threat of assault and assault. Gay teens reported feeling most vulnerable. MALTA PROTECTS GAYS Under pressure from the European Union, which it is set to join, Malta has banned anti-gay discrimination in the workplace. A legal notice published in the Government Gazette stated: "In determining whether any treatment is treatment that is justified in a democratic society, the Industrial Tribunal shall take into account the provisions of any directive and/or regulation issued by the institutions of the European Union relating to discrimination and particularly Council Directive 2000/43/EC of 29th June 2000 and Council Directive 2000/78/EC of 27th November 2000 prohibiting discrimination on the basis of religion or belief, disability, age, sexual orientation, race or ethnic origin." CDC: THAI GAYS HOLD HIV RECORD Seventeen of every 100 gay men in Thailand are HIV-positive, a study by the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has found. The agency said that's the highest gay HIV rate in the world. TRANNIES DENIED REGISTRATION The Argentine transvestite-transsexual organization ALITT (Association for the Fight for Transvestite-Transsexual Identity) has been denied governmental registration. In rejecting the application, Justice Ministry Inspector General Ricardo Augusto Nissen wrote: "I consider that the aims listed by ALITT ... do not fall into the category of 'public good' required of legally registered organizations under Article 33 of the Civil Code. It does not seem to me that 'to fight for recognition of transvestism as an identity by both society and the State' nor 'building transvestite-transsexual citizenship' offer a valuable framework for the development of coexistence." ARTIST ATTACKS GAY GROUP Lithuanian sculptor Bronius Vysniauskas wants $300 from the Lithuanian Gay League because it snapped a photo of one of his public sculptures of muscular, square-jawed Communist workers and put it on the cover of its magazine. Vysniauskas says if the group doesn't hand over the money, he will sue them for $8,000 for defamation. "I created a monument of two socialist workers, not gays," Vysniauskas said, according to Advocate.com. "I don't know how homosexuals came to the idea my models were gay." ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTSGAY VOICE FOR PERSONALS ============================ (We regret that this service is only available within the UK) To reply to ScotsGay Voice Ads, phone 09068 556613 (calls charged at 60p per minute) and use the number at the end of the ad.
