The Scottish Executive want to know what LGBT people think of their proposal to introduce civil partnerships for same-sex couples. Civil partnership is a non-religious version of marriage, that same-sex partners will be able to sign up to at the registrar's office. It would have similar non-religious legal effects to marriage. It's important that as many of us as possible comment to the Scottish Executive. We can bet that the opponents of civil partnership will be pressing the Executive to drop the proposals. You don't need to be an expert - the important thing is to tell the Executive whether you support civil partnership. If you can add why civil partnership might be important to you personally, or mention discrimination you and a partner have faced because your relationship was not recognised, that will be very useful too. You can comment to the Scottish Executive by E-mail or letter. A very short letter is all that's needed. The deadline for comments to arrive is December 5th. Tim Hopkins -------------------------------------------------------------------- BURSTING OUT IN LEITH ===================== Bar Java has burst out of its closet to offer Leith its first true gay venue. Situated in Constitution Street, at the centre of Leith's busy nightlife, it's owned by Steve and Peter and offers the local community both hotel and bar/bistro facilities. Although only established for six months under the new management duo, it has made a huge impact on local LGBT customers. And local publicans have also supported the new regime with praise and encouragement. Said Steve, "We aim to offer an establishment to stay and serve the growing LGBT population of Leith - something that has been long overdue and overwhelmingly welcomed. Barr Java's bistro serves meals every day (including all day Sunday) and the relaxed and informal atmosphere and surroundings will guarantee a return visit. Vegetarians are catered for and the value for money GBP 4.95 lunch menu includes a vegetarian option. There are nine rooms at Bar Java, eight of which are twins/doubles and the other is a family room for 4-5 people. For a B&B in this area and so close to the city centre, the prices are very competitive and include a full Scottish breakfast. From the new Stictly Pink Wednesday Nights to the Pink Weekender Packages, Java offers a great venue for fun, frolics and relaxation. With their high standards and vast investment on the forthcoming refurbishment of their rooms and frontage, Java aims to make a huge impact on the gay scene and will provide a well needed filling for a hole in the market. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Nun Sense ========= On the 1st December all in the convent will take a moment to reflect upon one of the most important aspects of our work, HIV/AIDS education. World AIDS Day is the time to remind ourselves of this pandemic's impact upon our gay village and the global village alike. Some facts remind us why the need for care of ourselves and respect those around us. * Since HIV/AIDS was identified, 60 million people have been diagnosed. * Over the last 20 years, 24.8 million have died of an AIDS related illness. This breaks down as follows, 19.9 million adults, 10.1 million women and 4.88 million children under the age of 15 years. * There are an average of 5 million new infections of HIV every year, 4.3 million adults, 1.8 million women and 500,000 children under the age of 15 years. * Over 10.3 million people between the age of 15 - 24 years are living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. Half of all new infections, averaging 7,000 per day, occur among young people. We are all prone to denial when we read figures such as these,. but let us look at Scotland's response to the fourth largest killer in the world. The report from health observers says "doing quite well - but do better". SCIEH (Scottish Centre for Infection and Environmental Health) has just released their November 2003 figures with some interesting pointers as to our community's regard to this major health issue. In Scotland, 57% of gay men who attend GUM with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) are unaware they have an HIV diagnosis. Ethical protocol forbids consultants to tell these men, so valuable time and support is lost. There are at present 2,413 people (men, women and children) living with HIV in Scotland. Between the months of July to September of this year there were 57 new cases of HIV diagnosed of which 23 were from sexual intercourse between men. Those are the facts. So what can we all do to change, for the better, our attitude to this major health issue? The Convent of Dunn Eideann will reach out to support young men in our community and any actively-seeking fun-loving man who comes among us will be blessed with our traditional festive offering, the Sister Health Pack. This year there will not be as many as last, due to the closure of a most valued, and blessed funder, World AIDS Lothian. But we have been able to secure enough to make, we hope, some impact and a safer festive time for you. With the blessing of a Sister Health Pack we hope you'll avoid many of the pitfalls that could make January, and beyond, a trying time. Here are a few suggestions to make your festive frolics memorable for the right reasons. CONDOM A condom, used for either anal and oral sex, will 'greatly reduce' the chance of becoming infected with any of the 57 STI's out there. Be careful how you roll on the condom, just as in opening the packaging, avoid tearing with teeth or finger nails. LUBE Lube gives extra protection during foreplay and prevents abrasions (redness, soreness even scratching/breaking skin) and so reduces the risk of infections. If it does not look as if you are going to get the chance to put to its legitimate use then it can serve as an emergency hair gel. Looking good for yet another night until Mr Right comes along. BOTTLE Sadly, Edinburgh and Lothian Police have on record serious crimes committed against (mostly gay) men in the Lothians involving a gang of 'date rapists'. Please be aware of who is near your drink at all times, or offers of drink which you did not see poured by the bar staff. The police say the date rape drug GHB (also known as liquid Ecstasy) is widely used by this gang. They target men, perceived to be gay, alone and friendly. This crime is not just found in bars, so be aware of this issue should you be going home with that tall, dark and handsome stranger and let someone behind the bar, or a friendly aquaintance you have where you are off to. KEEP IT COOL Because of the last item, now is the time to think about you being you. About enjoying the festivities but staying in control of the action. We approach a season renowned as much for its superficiality as its sincerity. You might feel pressure to waive your hard held beliefs about issues such as the unacceptability of unprotected sex, drugs and aggression in the face of new friends and new values. You alone are the keeper of your soul and your conscience and as such will have to come to terms with the consequences of the actions you took to please, or appease, the crowd. Be yourself, for a man who can live with himself is a man who is at peace with the world. We hope this year's Sister Health Pack will help you in some way to keep both the faith of the Safer Sex message and the friends with which you share so much. Bless you. PV gets little funding so go along for a wee while to show your support. The night will have loads going on including; charity raffle with loads of prizes and giveaways. The night will also provide some promotion for World Aids Day coming up on Dec 1st. Pout will also be undergoing a major refurbishment in the New Year, and I don't mean just a lick of paint but a major facelift. Check out the bar for all the new drink promos and cocktail menu. Habana is to host the CORE re-launch party on Dec 5th. Core was originally a mag for gay guyz and was funded by Gay Men's Health, however it will now be catering for the entire LGBT market. Money is being raised for this night every week at the Quizieoke held on Thu nights with DJ Johnboy. The party will also act as an awareness night for World Aids Day. Habana will have some shenanigans going on Dec 1st, however they have not yet been confirmed so you will need to check out the bar for more details! They recently won another award from Gay In Edinburgh - Bar of the Year!! A well deserved award and well done to the staff!! (And before anyone starts moaning: the awards had nothing to do with me!) A group of guys and gals from this company went out and checked out every bar on the 'scene' and they were graded on five things; manners of the bar staff, drink promos, atmosphere, entertainment and some other one which I can't remember!) Other winners included: James Longworth's VIBE for best club night and Sala for best food. CC Blooms has 2 brand new DJs coming up from England to DJ downstairs with a selection of the finest R&B tunes in the first/second week in Dec. This will probably take over the Tue night slot. Edinburgh's cutest young singing sensation Chris Kidd will be performing on the first Wed of every month upstairs. The famous stripper 9 (I was lucky enough to lick his nipples) who joined in all the Hallowe'en fun could become a monthly slot at CCs too!! Mon is Top Of The Pops Night, playing all the very best radio mixes on the dance floor. Tue is 70's/80's (for now). Wed plays all the very best in chart/dance. Thu is mix night. And the weekend has a mix of absolutely everything!!! CC's is also free entry. A raffle and a surprise show will be on World AIDS Day. And last but not least a fond farewell to Peter and Sam who left last month! Well Christmas is well on the way now and the first major Christmas party has been confirmed! Bootylushous will celebrate at Medina in Lothian St under Negotiants. The night itself takes place on Sun 7th Dec, which is quite early but never mind! Drink promos run throughout the night and entry is GBP 2 before Midnight and GBP 3 thereafter. Other than that, Booty will run as usual every Sunday 11pm-3am at EGO, playing a mix of R&B, Soul & Funk. BLAZE is a relatively new club and is held every second Fri. Cafe Sala situated in Broughton St also has lots going on in December including; a World Aids Day celebration of life on Mon Dec 1st, the concluding part of Tipping The Velvet on Tue 2nd Dec, pre-Velvet drinks and tunes to warm all you ladies up for the Ladies night being held at the Commplex, and Sat 13th Dec is a drag night for Christmas. Bar Java, situated in Leith's Constitution St is now a gay run/friendly bar/hotel. Pink night is on a Wed, happy hour between 5-8pm, meals are served daily and hotel rooms start at GBP 25 per room per night. Speaking of places to stay when you are in Edinburgh or stuck for a room, Palmerston Lodge has reopened as an LGBT friendly guest house/hotel/backpacker kinda place. Rooms vary in prices and selections of spacious rooms/dorms etc are on offer. Palmerston Lodge is a traditional 'A' listed building in the heart of Edinburgh's city centre just 5 minutes from Haymarket station. Edinburgh's oldest running club night - JOY has confirmed their next few dates. Held monthly Saturdays at the Venue (15 Calton Road) the next nights are: Nov 22nd, Dec 20th, Jan 17th and Feb 14th, just in case you like to plan ahead! You all know the drill by now, DJs include: Alan & Maggie Joy, Trendy Wendy, Sally F & Brett King. Joy's little brother WIGGLE! Will have his next outing on Sat Dec 5th. The venue is EGO situated on Picardy Place. The pre-Wiggle party will take place at Planet Out from 10pm and half price passes will be available. The New Town Bar, has drink promotions running daily. This cosy little bar is especially popular with men but welcomes women contrary to what anyone says! The Downstairs bar opens Fri and Sat nights with the resident DJ playing until 2pm. The 'club' downstairs is also available for hire. The music is brilliant; staff are fast efficient and friendly so if you haven't been go along with a bunch of mates and check it out. The New Town regularly does its bit to support the community and local charities but for some reason people can't be arsed walking that extra 200 yards along the road to get there! I do recommend going especially if you want to get away from the 'usual crowds' that hang around all of the other pubs and clubs. They also have the latest state of the art widescreen plasma screens there to keep you entertained if you can't be bothered chatting to folk! Cheers! I spy with my little eye, something beginning with 'B'. It has come to my attention that a certain establishment on Glassford Street, has come within a sniff of losing its late licence. Apparently it took the casting vote of the chairperson, to allow them to continue. Now this is not the first time that the stewards have been caught on video being less than solicitous towards their clientele. So it seems it does matter how you treat your patrons and the authorities hold a dim view of clubs who take no interest in their customers' welfare. I await developments in this area and will pass on the juicier gossip. One place that won't be selling any more drink is Sadie Frosts which has unlamentedly closed. It seems that displeasing all of the people all of the time is no way to run a business! Gaia preserve us, it is that time of year again already and by the time you read this the High Streets will be stiff with the commercial aspects of the so called festive season. I toyed with the idea of running a competition, to see who could spot the first mince pie of the year, but the results would have been just too depressing! As usual the majority of venues will be attempting to extract the maximum amount from your wallets and purses. We can expect the annual rip off on door prices and the total lack of effort to provide good entertainment or anything extra or out of the ordinary for your hard-earned cash. Bah humbug! In the meantime, with the end of this year's Glasgay, we return to relative calm in the next few weeks. Club Violate, celebrate their 5th Birthday on Fri 21st Nov. Regulars will note the change in the time of the month, so mark your diaries accordingly. The theme will be 'Going to School'. So, no doubt there will be canes and gymslips aplenty the venue is the usual one, the 'Big Joint', in Scotstoun. This club is very popular and welcomes a mixed crowd of all ages and life styles. Music is a mix of Dance and Rock. A play area is set up in the large back room and food is included in the ticket price. Sat 6th Dec is the infamous Violate Christmas party. This year as well as all the normal fetish fun, they will have live entertainment (more details to be announced) as well as prizes for whatever depraved competition they can think of. As usual, most of the rapping could be heard coming from that seat of moral righteousness at Glasgow's Ocean Quay, The Sunday Mail. Filth was the name of Glasgow University Union's weekly mag. Unlike The Sunday Mail; it's actually funny. The tired old fogey, The Sunday Mail, on the other hand, wagged a disapproving finger at: "gossip on the sexual exploits of its members and raunchy pictures of students posing provocatively in police uniforms... another features a points scoring system for students' sexual conquests. According to the challenge, students would get 150 points for sex with the union president and 30 points for sex with a fresher aged 16 or under... The Hall of Shame website features pictures of drunken students. One shows a male student posing naked, a second picture features a young woman vomiting into a big bag and another has two women dressed as police posing with a truncheon and a fake gun". Ever the drama Mcqueen dragged in Rape Crisis Scotland. After being shown the phrase "no means yes and yes means harder", they threw the covers over the piano legs and were "quick to condemn the publication". David Ritchie, the Union president, who'd clearly never read The Sunday Mail, observed; "people who are going to university are of enough intelligence to realise this was meant in good humour". Filth re-launched itself as Clean with advice for those who still hadn't quite got it: "We're just f***ing joking". (Or at least, that was how The Sunday Mail put it. We're happy to reveal the word was actually the old Scottish word: 'fucking'). The paper raged at the students' impertinence. Mcqueen blasted: "The controversy comes just weeks after three young men were sexually assaulted in Glasgow's west end, near to the university campus". The tabloid's concern didn't stretch to shaming the Executive for insisting that gay men didn't need the protection of the law in those circumstances! With the mere whiff of rape in the wind, The Sunday Mail's Marion Scott threw back the screens to reveal: "A 13-year-old girl" who told "in her own words how she was raped then betrayed by the system". Or was she? It was established that the girl had agreed to sex. Is this then the proper definition of rape? She was portrayed in Scott's report as a sexless mannequin, a "schoolgirl... only 13", a "virgin" who had "never had a boyfriend". If she had been 12-years-old, in law, her sexual partner would have been convicted of statutory rape since a child is not deemed able to consent to sex. Sensibly, recognising that her interest in sex was developing, her older partner was convicted of the lesser offence of having sex with a minor. The Sunday Mail touted for soundbites from "campaigners" who were calling for a change in the law "because similar loopholes are used by paedophiles that 'groom' children for sex". This bore no relation to the facts of this story, but that wasn't going to get in the way of reporter Marion Scott, who was already wandering down a path, well-trodden by tabloids, haunted by canny paedophiles, patiently "waiting until youngsters turn 13" so they could "escape harsher sentences". It was also somewhat misleading since the 'victim's' partner, variously described as an "attacker", and a "stranger" was just 16-years-old! What about young people's rights to sexual expression? If the journalists working at The Sunday Mail took a moment to look up from their keyboards, put down the phone to the Catholic Church and ask everyone around them, they'd find out most of them have actually had some sort of sexual experience before the age of consent. And I dare say it; most of them quite enjoyed it! How would they like it if their parents found out and proceeded to take their sexual partner, with little in the way of age difference between them, to court? Young people have sexual rights too. They need to confide in someone they can trust. In cases of assault, we will need to listen harder and remember that the person charged also has a right to defend themselves in court, however distressing that might be for a victim. The Sunday Mail all too quickly paints such an exercise as "hostile questioning", adding: "Last month, we told how a 15-year-old girl allegedly raped by a stranger, was questioned six times by lawyers and police". Anne Brown of Eighteen and Under, went along in the spirit of the report, insisting that "the UN Convention considers anyone under the age of 18 to be a child, so our legal system is going against that". Well, our legal system has been pretty loose about what a child can or cannot do. Sandy Brindley of Rape Crisis Scotland stated, "the Scottish court system expects a 13-year-old to provide the same burden of proof on consent as they do of a 30-year-old woman". That's tough on anyone, but there's no way out of it, (unless of course you believe anyone accused of rape should not be entitled to defend themselves in a court of law). The Sunday Mail threw in a paedophile to wake up anyone falling asleep: "A similar legal loophole in England was used by internet paedophile Michael Wheeler, 36, to avoid a life sentence". But he was still gaoled! The 13-year-old girl poured her heart out to The Sunday Mail. The court heard how the lad followed her into her house and they had sex on the bed, which may or may not have implied consent. The girl was quoted, but sounded like she'd either been drugged or had words put in her mouth. Talking of the Fiscal, (intelligent enough to know what this meant), she said: "He kept asking if I knew what sex was and whether I had tried it before. I told him no. I was too young. I was only 13 and hadn't ever been out with a boy". After her sexual experience, her mother, the police, court officials and The Sunday Mail, none of who were likely to have adopted any positive message to the mere hint of sexual curiosity on the girl's part, all confronted her. Despite the difficulties in ascertaining consent, The Sunday Mail devoted endless column inches to this story, rather than the unquestionably non-consensual rape of young men that were taking place in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. Over the girl's plight, the Mail reported: "Abuse groups call for change in Scots law", following a demand for "a change in the law to close a loophole allowing rapists to escape justice". But was this really a "loophole"? If a girl was between 13 and 16, lawyers could claim they had consented to sex. But that was certainly no guarantee! The Mail bemoaned the fact Scotland was not getting the English Sexual Offences Bill, due to be law by the end of the year. It was expected to increase the sentence for unlawful sex with youngsters between 13 and 16-years-old from two to 14 years. In fact -- and what The Sunday Mail didn't explain -- was that it goes much further than that. Home Secretary David Blunkett proposed that youngsters, for nothing more than a quick kiss and cuddle, could face a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment. Two 12-year-olds, for example, doing much the same thing, could be committing an even graver crime, being labelled as major sex criminals on a par with much older abusers. Parents who allow, say, their 15-year-old son to have sex with his girlfriend of the same age in their house, rather than up against the wally of a dark tenement close could also face imprisonment. And as for filthy Glasgow students "promoting under-age sex..."! May The Sunday Mail have mercy on their souls! Peter Tatchell likens the Sexual Offences Bill to Clause 28, unlikely to be evoked, but always there, ready to be exploited by moral campaigners. At last, a panel of 'experts' have come up with a strategy that will deal with Scotland's appalling level of teen pregnancies and STI's. Think of all the money they could've saved if they'd just listened to me in the first place! The Herald's editorial wasn't entirely convinced: "So much for the problems. They have been known about for years. It has taken the Scottish Executive four years to produce a strategy, put out for consultation yesterday, to tackle the many related sexual health problems. Inevitably, it recommends the appointment of a 'czar' to co-ordinate the campaign and the many agencies involved. Politicians like such figureheads because they give the impression of action being taken to cure an ill but the jury is still out on whether they have any effect". Of course they won't! Hello? Has anyone heard of The Church? They were lurking in the shadows before the ink had dried. (What am I talking about? They helped put it together)! "Church insiders believe the final version of the report will now acknowledge that many believe sex among young Scots should only occur if children have reached the age of consent and within stable relationships", reported Scotland on Sunday. The Church were churning out the same old propaganda, trying to convince us that we are looking at a product of years of unbridled sexual liberalism, when in reality, Scotland is looking at a product of years of sexual repression. "A quarter of a century of mechanical and biological solutions have demonstrably failed", sniffed a Catholic Church spokesman in Scotland on Sunday, adding: "In that sense the sooner we set this debate in a moral context the better". Allan Laing in The Herald hit the hammer on the nail: "The Dutch are everything the Scots are not when it comes to attitudes about sex -- philosophical, pragmatic, tolerant, free-thinking. The reason for this is to be found, in part at least, within the political culture of the Netherlands with its emphasis on consensus. It is, too, the most secular of European countries. There you can buy marijuana in a shop then cross the street and see prostitutes in storefront windows. It is an attitude thing. For the Dutch, sex is not a 'dirty' word. It is a fact of life, freely discussed and permitted". Elsewhere, The Scottish Sun was busy head-butting the Dutch with the words: "CLOBBER THE CLOGGERS", over the crunch Euro 2004 play-off at Hampden. (Just an indication of the likely respect Scots will demonstrate to our sexually mature neighbours). The men behind such headlines, after all, are real men! Not faggots like us, supporting whichever country had the best tune in the Eurovision Song Contest. The 'experts' think that we need to change attitudes over sex in Scotland at a root and branch level. But do any of these 'experts' ever read the Scottish press? "STICK IT UP YOUR KILT, PEDRO", was The Daily Record's gloating retort to EU commissioner, Pedro Solbes who was behind a Europe-wide survey that classified the kilt as 'womenswear'. It was soon corrected, allowing The Record to brag "WE GET BARMY RULING LIFTED" alongside a picture of "porridge ad hunk Rory McCann" swishing his kilt like a girlie. They made out that Solbes was forced to 'concede' that Scotts porridge hunk, McCann "isn't a transvetite" which left me wondering what was worse: The slip of a Eurocrat's pen or the bullish denigration of cross-dressers by Record reporter Amy Devine. An apology from the EU commissioner's office was fair enough. "We regret this unfortunate error and did not intend to cause any ill-feeling through this survey. There was no malice intended..." Which was more than could be said of The Record who dismissed the apology as "grovelling". The tabloid was rattled: "The manufacturing census forms didn't just insult proud Scots -- they also branded macho Hollywood heroes such as Vin Diesel, Samuel L Jackson and Braveheart star Mel Gibson as transvestites". No. It was The Daily Record who was insulting transvestites. In a small box accompanying the story, the wounded Record warned: "DON'T SNIFF AT SCOTS", adding: "Scots men are the toughest in Britain when it comes to battling coughs and sniffles... Our men only get three colds a year, when the national average is seven". Almost as an afterthought, the report also revealed "Scottish women suffer from just one cold a year..." And do you think we have even a hope of changing Scotland's attitudes over sex? Probably the fact that the Church is only good for a laugh these days might explain its recurrence in Britain's popular papers. The Sunday Mail and The Scottish News of the World were falling over themselves to report the latest outbreak of muscular Christianity. Not the Catholic Church this time, but the moribund Church of Scotland. The Rev Dan Hawthorn had been writing to his parishioners at Belmedie, near Aberdeen, telling them to "pray HARDER".
