Who would have thought that ScotsGay would be seen in the same bed as the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement - but that's what the current Gay Marriage debate has achieved! The Coalition for Marriage Equality is a loosely affiliated group of gay and gay-friendly organisations willing to stand up for the principle of equality. We believe that it is unacceptable to create one law for opposite-sex couples and another for same-sex couples. We believe that both Marriage and Civil Partnerships should be made available to all couples regardless of their sexual orientation. The Coalition, which is growing, includes: OutRage!, The Queer Youth Alliance, The Gay & Lesbian Humanist Association, The Lesbian & Gay Christian Movement, Young LGBT Christians, The Metropolitan Community Church of Manchester, Jewish Gay and Lesbian Group, Durham University Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Association and ScotsGay Magazine. I've never had a problem with working on single issues with people with whom I have profound philosophical and political disagreements - as long as we can make sure that public perception of our working together doesn't imply agreement on the areas in which we disagree and Christians (and ScotsGay readers) should by now be very familiar with my views of the judgement of people who talk to their imaginary friend. I value diversity rather than unity. There's an other area where sharing a platform causes problems for some people - when that platform is being shared with racists and fascists. Personally, I'd debate with Adolf Hitler himself as long as my personal physical safety was assured. The election of BNP councillors caused kittens amongst politicians and political commentators. Whilst it's sad that so many people were prepared to support the BNP by voting for them, the actual effect of the BNP's election has been that public exposure of the blithering idiots' total incoherence at Council meetings has led to a collapse of that support. The oxygen of publicity has blown out the flame. Avoiding debate by declaring some opponents to be beyond the pale is lazy politics. If winning hearts and minds is important, debate is crucial. And I don't honestly believe that the current trends to limit "hate speech" help either. Does criminalisation of speech affect what people are actually thinking? Does it fuck! I'd rather know who my enemies really are than be smothered by the uncertainly of a cloud of wooly PC speak. John Hein E-mail: editorial@scotsgay.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS ==== GET THEE TO THE CHURCH THIS TIME An Edinburgh Church which ministers amongst the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities has lodged a petition before the Scottish Parliament calling for the right for the proposed Civil Partnership Ceremonies for same-sex couples to be conducted by a minister of religion as is already the case for mixed-sex couples under Scots marriage law. The Metropolitan Community Church has been worshipping in Edinburgh for the past nine years and is part of a world-wide Christian denomination that was originally founded by gay people in 1968. While warmly welcoming the principles behind the Civil Partnerships Bill, which the Westminster Government introduced into the House of Lords at the end of March, the Church is disappointed that, unlike marriage, a couple will only be offered the option of having the ceremony conducted by a Registrar and that the Registrar will be expressly prohibited by law from conducting the ceremony in a place with a religious connection. The Scottish Parliament will be asked to consent to the Westminster legislation by way of a Sewell motion. The Church has lodged a petition with the Public Petitions Committee of the Scottish Parliament calling for couples to be offered the option of a religious Civil Partnership Ceremony. Church Spokesman Stephen Harte was dismayed that the legislation, as currently drafted, denied the right of same-sex couples to ground their commitment in their faith: "As a Church we will be able to marry our mixed-sex couples but will have to send our same-sex couples off to a Registry Office. We can't even get the Registrar to come to our Church - the Ceremony could take place anywhere at all so long as it is not a Church! It is as if the Government has accepted the claims of the religious right that you can't be lesbian, gay or bisexual and Christian. We know that is not true. The Bill is an insult to the many people of faith who live in loving, committed same-sex relationships. If the Bill isn't changed this may go down in history as one of the few pieces of legislation that specifically discriminates against people of faith." The Church's Petition reminds the Scottish Parliament that, in terms of Articles 9(1) and 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights, Parliament must not discriminate on grounds of gender in allowing people to manifest their religion. Section 29(2)(d) of the Scotland Act 1998 requires the Scottish Parliament to comply with the European Convention EAST MEETS WEST Not everyone, when in the need to socialise feels at home in the gay bars and clubs. They can sometimes be intimidating, maybe too noisy, or even a bit of a culture shock. Sometimes it is nice to be able to socialise in a different atmosphere with friends who have an outlook in life that extends not only to the gay bars and clubs. During the past few years I have been taking my annual holidays in various parts of the Far East where the gay culture could not be more different from what we are used to in the UK. Although a lot of the bars are similar, the attitude of gay men from the Far East is quite different. Through the family values set as a part of life, the Asian gay man tends to treat others with a modicum of respect that is often not the case in Western Men. It will therefore be no surprise to you to learn that I have a preference for Asian Men and their culture. With all this in mind, and like everyone else with a need to socialise, a friend and I have decided to see if there is a need for non-structured social group meeting in the West of Scotland. So, if you think you might like to mix with gay Asian men and their admirers then feel free to join us. We intend to meet on the at 3pm on the first Saturday of the month in Glasgow's GLC Caf Bar, what we do or where we go is up to the participators. If you want to contact us prior to our next meeting, telephone us on 07748-183626 or if you feel like it E-mail: eastmeetswestscotland@ hotmail.com What Do YOU Want To Do? It's been a packed few months for the LGBT Centre for Health & Wellbeing, Edinburgh. Since opening in August last year, with a grant from the New Opportunities Fund, the Centre has initiated projects, enjoyed partnership work and become a base for groups and activities. From the ground-breaking All Women Project: providing opportunities for lesbian, bisexual and transgender women to participate in consultations, entertainment nights and groups; to the Spiked drinks campaign; smoking cessation courses; Core magazine; and the forthcoming T-Time (an open day for all transgender people), the Centre takes its lead from the LGBT community. So, if you're lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, this is where you come in. What do YOU want to do? It's not all about big ideas and big commitment. You could have a simple idea for an LGBT activity class or group. Is there a gap in services, or lack of information for a specific health matter? Robinson, who has represented a Vancouver-area district for 25 years, was not apprehended at the time of the theft. He went to the police and confessed four days later. The following day, Federal Auction Services said it had provided video evidence of the crime to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police before Robinson turned himself in. "For some time now, I have been suffering from severe stress and emotional pain," Robinson told reporters. "I have experienced great inner turmoil. The reasons for this are of course intensely personal, and I am not prepared to discuss them, but among others relate to the cumulative pressures of dealing with the emotional consequences of a nearly fatal hiking accident [in 1997]. "This accumulated stress culminated last Friday in my engaging in an act that was totally inexplicable and unthinkable. While attending a public jewellery sale, I pocketed a piece of jewellery. ... Something just snapped in this moment of utter irrationality. "Immediately upon leaving the premises I realized that I must return the jewellery. Too afraid to go back, and unable to contact the owners by telephone, during the long weekend, I spent a weekend of great anguish, determined to return the jewellery at the first opportunity. On Tuesday morning, I attempted to contact the owners, and not being able to do so directly, I went to the police and gave them a full account of what I had done, and returned the jewellery to them. ... I await the decision of Crown Counsel and will not seek to in any way avoid full responsibility for my actions should charges be laid in these circumstances. DAGESTAN ALLEGEDLY BARS GAY SINGER The Culture Ministry of the Russian republic of Dagestan blocked a concert by gay Russian pop singer Boris Moiseyev in Makhachkala, the capital city, the Gazeta newspaper has reported. The ministry allegedly prevented Moiseyev from renting the Russian Theater, which was to be the concert venue, after local imams objected to Moiseyev being allowed to enter Dagestan, which is predominantly Muslim. "We have canceled the show because Dagestan's Culture Ministry refused to offer us concert space," a Moiseyev spokesman told Gazeta. "They said that imams had approached them with requests to keep Moiseyev from entering the country." GAY MILITIA STORMS CHRISTIAN MEETING Bandanna-wearing lesbians stormed the recent national convention of the Concerned Christian Coalition in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Seven women and one man burst into the conclave at the Coast Plaza Hotel, screaming, "Right-wing bigots go away, Gay Militia is here to stay." VANCOUVER GAY BEACH THREATENED Denizens of Vancouver's famed gay nude beach, Wreck Beach, are upset about the University of British Columbia's plans to build 20-story dormitories nearby. They say their privacy will be invaded by dorm-dwellers with binoculars and Web cams. N.Z. CHILD HAS THREE PARENTS A New Zealand child has three parents following resolution of a court battle between a lesbian couple and an Australian gay couple who donated sperm to the lesbians. The unnamed 2-year-old's parents now consist of his biological mother, his biological father and his mother's female partner. The boy was conceived in Sydney by mutual agreement among the four friends but they later had a falling-out and the women moved back to New Zealand and denied the men access to the boy. Auckland Family Court Judge Sarah Fleming determined the women's actions were wrong, and gave the father joint guardianship and seven days' access to the boy each month. ZANZIBAR BANS GAY SEX The legislature of the Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar, which is part of the nation of Tanzania, has voted unanimously to ban homosexuality. Gay male relationships will be punished with 25 years in prison and lesbian relationships with seven years in prison. A spokesman for President Amani Karume said Karume will sign the measure into law. Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim and may be moving in the direction of fundamentalism. --------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTSDYKE ========= Helicopter Girl "Voodoo Chic" Released by Instant Karma on 7th June 2004 "Joyce is a talent worth watching" Sunday Times Culture On a fateful day in 1996, a band called Ambisonic had a near hit with a song called "Helicopter Kinda Girl", a musical narrative about a kooky super-heroine who landed on earth from outer space. The band may have since made a dignified retreat, but the legend of Helicopter Girl lives on through the singer of Ambisonic, the charismatic Jackie Joyce, who has adopted and brought to life the fictitious character via her potent, haunting and funky music. Like her mysterious persona, Joyce remains something of a gorgeous enigma, her lyrics deliberately full of subtle ambiguities, her music like an audio-mist through the ears of the listener. It seems strange that this cosmopolitan, ethereal figure has her roots firmly planted in Perth, Scotland. The spiritual and mystical approach is reflected in the way Helicopter Girl produces her music, coming up with disparate phrases in her head which turn out upon later analysis to have a hidden meaning that sometimes even the composer was unaware of. Most of the tracks on her album "Voodoo Chic" are based on fictional characters that Helicopter Girl has created and most are sung as if in the third person. "Voodoo Chic", her second album to date, follows from her Mercury award nominated album "How to Steal the World". "Voodoo Chic" is more upbeat and sensual, following in the ranks of Portishead, Morcheeba and Moloko, with her unusual husky vocals and sexy, repetitive throbbing beats. There are many musical influences in this album, hints of dance, a pinch of the African tribal, an inkling of Latino, and a hint within her vocals of soul diva. The sheer abstractness of the album is what marks its accessibility. The listener is able to place his or her own meaning into the tracks, free from the constraint of the songwriter's own perspective. It is an album that amazingly exceeds her first in terms of style and sex appeal. The whole album is a kind of spiritual invitation to free your mind, chill and open up to the ever spiralling talents of the elegant and elusive Helicopter Girl. Catch her before she whirls up into the heights, which she is surely heading for. No doubt you will have heard that Aberdeen was recently voted 2nd most desirable place for LGBT people to live in Scotland just behind Glasgow and 8th in the UK. This was a fact that even made it into the local papers recently. This may be the case but these are the same people who give Aberdeen's gay scene a big body swerve and have done for many years. With Dundee 70 miles to the south, Aberdeen has no competition for LGBT venues in the North of Scotland. If this city is so gay friendly then one would expect a proliferation of LGBT venues and emporia - not so though. The survey states that despite having quite a small scene the area has an LGBT friendly council and police and that gay people can feel comfortable in straight bars and clubs. Before I came out I wasn't aware of the gay community in Aberdeen. Ever since, I still wonder where most of them are. I always half expected to stumble upon pockets of open gay communities something like 'The Land that Time Forgot'. Where, out of the mist, rainbow flags would appear and line the streets of deepest darkest Donside. But they're not there - the majority of the LGBT community here are invisible. Aberdeen certainly seems to have one of the narrowest cross sections of population out on the scene. When I asked 'Where do all the gay people go?' 'South' and 'Back to their wives' came the answers. Perhaps these people still have the image of an intolerant society in the North of Scotland. But this is changing. Every soap opera and reality programme is doing the gay thing these days. And that can only be a good thing. Everyone can see that no longer are we something different we are now something the same as everyone else. We laugh, cry, love, hate and do all the things that everyone else does. Except for who we fancy we're no different and even that is no longer a big issue. The gay scene will always have its place in any city although it's not to everyone's taste. But the LGBT community is no longer totally dependent on it to meet partners or just relax and have a few drinks. So I guess from this that visibility is no longer the key factor in a successful gay community. But there are a lot of people out there that still have to realise this. Is Aberdeen a good place to live if you are gay? I think the answer has to be 'Yes' - but I think that a lot of people just don't believe that it is. Anyway, I guess any top ten survey will provide a good basis for an argument on the other hand you might not give a toss. It is with great sadness that the trustees of the Grampian Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Switchboard announce that the service will cease at the end of May. Due to diminishing number of calls and a shortage of volunteers they have decided to call it a day. Andy Webb said that perhaps this was a good sign and that LGBT people could now rely on the support of their friends and relatives where as in the past only the switchboard could provide this service. Andy would also like to thank the many people who contributed to and supported the Switchboard over its 26 year service. Congratulations go to Matthew Middler who has landed the unenviable task of co-ordinating Pride Aberdeen 2004. The event will be held in Duthie Park on Sun 6th Jun from Noon to 7pm. There will be a large information marquee with local and national LGBT organisations supplying information, resources, support and advice. The market marquee has quite a few confirmed traders including rainbow goods, crystals, musical instruments and contemporary kilts by 'ENIGMA' from Edinburgh. The main stage where local bands and musicians will perform include 'Eric Ewan' winner of best band in Aberdeen this year, as well as Aberdeen's funkiest DJs. There will also be a range of inflatable and fairground rides present for adults as well as kids. This is just the confirmed information at present so on the day there will be much, much more!!! As well as events on the day I can confirm that the 'Belmont Cinema' will be showing for the first time in almost a decade 'Priscilla - Queen of the Desert' following a performance by Aberdeen's up and coming drag act in the theatre. This will be on Fri 4th Jun at 9pm. Matthew is hoping to hold an open meeting soon concerning the event where there will be the opportunity for volunteering and to find out more. This will be posted on G-Zone and in Bar Indigo when confirmed. Look out also for details of fund-raising events. The first one was in Abacos last weekend and raised over GBP200 towards the event. If anyone wants to get in touch to find out more then Matthew can be contacted at E-mail: prideorganiser@nelf-online.org.uk or phone Aberdeen (01224) 212442. You can also catch Polysuper at The Newtown Bar every Friday and Saturday with drink promos running throughout the night downstairs at the Newtown. WWW: http://www.polysuper.com/ A big Happy Birthday to Alan Joy On Sun May 2nd. Celebrations are at Club EGO - Mingin' style. The main hall will be Mingin' for one night only in this new venue and Alan and Brian Dempster will be the DJs along with some surprise guests. Entry is GBP5 11pm-3pm. Just to confuse you all ever so slightly, Mingin' has changed venue from Studio 24 and has now settled into its new home which is The Venue. The move was successful on Sat Apr 17th and seems to be popular with the punters as no one is complaining about sound! The music policy is 'dark dirty house music' and entry is still GBP5 before midnight and GBP6 after. JOY's next confirmed date at the Venue is Sat May 8th. The new door prices are - GBP6 before midnight and GBP8 after. Alan and Maggie Joy along with Brian Dempster provide the tunes in the upstairs room while Trendy Wendy plus guests will be your hosts downstairs in the 'cooler'. In addition to its constantly changing guest Real Ale, I hear that The Regent has recently added a guest Perry to its range. The first was a charming little 8% number from award winning producers Gwatkins in Herefordshire. It's being sold by the half pint to discourage people from falling over the pub dogs and/or their own feet! Planet Out seems to be ten times busier since their re fit at the beginning of the year. Pink Pound on a Monday has the place packed. DJ Trendy Wendy provides the tunes from 9pm and selected drinks are GBP1 for Premium spirits. Tuesday is pre-Vibe with Alan Cross providing a mix of all the camp classics. Wednesday is a more chilled atmosphere after two hard party nights! Thursday nights are hosted by DJs Jon Pleased and Morgan who are part of the new club night starting at EGO - it's run by Taste and is called FEVER. A big well done to Edinburgh's Premier Bar Habana for gathering nearly 400 Easter Eggs for Charity on Easter Sunday. Diversitay have alerted me to a consultation to be held in June investigating the possibilities of an LGBT drop-in centre for Dundee. This is a valuable opportunity to make a truly important change in the LGBT community. Questions such as how such a centre would be created, used and maintained need answered, and this consultation is the first step. A good turnout will result in a centre that reflects the needs of all in the Dundee and Tayside region. It takes place in the DCA, Wednesday 15th Jun from 6pm onwards. The next Diversitay social evening will be held on Wednesday the 19th May, this time at The Braes on Perth Road. More details from the Diversitay switchboard, telephone Dundee (01382) 202620 Mon 7-10pm. The quiz night at Charlie's was a huge success, packing out the bar and raising GBP150 for Body Positive Tayside. The winning team, appropriately named "Viagra Falls" as it was a fun sex quiz, won a meal for four at the Outside Inn Restaurant. Everyone had a fun evening, with much heckling and bawdy answers being shouted to some of the ruder questions. Another quiz night has been arranged for Tue 11th May from 8pm. This will be a fun general knowledge quiz, with a large cash prize for the winning team. Further details available from Charlie's Bar. The first Vibe Perth was a successful night, getting a reasonable crowd in the City in Perth on Sunday the 25th Apr. It was a fantastic venue with friendly staff and great music policy that had people on the dance floor from the start. The night will continue weekly from Sun 16th May from 10pm-2am, GBP3 entry and GBP1.50 drink promos. For those who like to travel further afield, Vibe Stirling is also held weekly at the Fubar, again 10pm-2am, GBP3 entry and drinks promos. Out packed 'em in on Saturday the 24th Apr as Mr. Gay UK made their one stop in the North of Scotland. There are plans for holding something on Sun 2nd of May, possible along the lines of a theme night. More details will be advertised in Brooklyn's and Out running up to the night. All the usual drinks promos are going on in Brooklyn's: double vodkas GBP2, two vodka twister shots for GBP3, lager GBP1.50 and three bottles of Stella for GBP3, along with all the usual good bargains in Out. Chris E-mail: courier_chris@yahoo.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- GLASCHU: GLASGOW SCENE ====================== Salutations and felicitations gentle folk. Okay, time for some more of the usual pish and gibberish from yours truly. Spring is finally here and the sun has returned. Homophobes are still getting their knickers in a twist when guys kiss each other in public. Butch dykes are still really scary and keeping Tennants in profit. Tory Blur is still hoping to be president of Europe and George W still thinks needlessly killing people makes them your friends! I'm still opening my big mouth about just about everything and the Ginger beer monster still wants this copy in on time. So I'd better find something interesting to fill in the gaps between the adverts. A brief mention and congratulations to the Glasgow Film Theatre, which celebrates its 30th birthday this month. Tough luck it's all down hill from here on in. Remember folks whatever you find to do: be safe. Angharad E-mail: angharad@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTTISH MEDIA MONITOR ====================== Garry Otton Lifts the Veil off Marriage Before We Take It Over The Herald still thinks it's important for its readers to know what the Catholic Church thinks about gay issues. "Drop gay marriage plans, says Catholic", Alison Chiesa's report hollered. The new civil partnerships bill is a piece of apartheid-style legislation that falls far short of attaining the high standards most gays (and hopefully, most straights) come to expect from equality legislation. Why should we entertain laws that deny unmarried straights the opportunity to avoid marriage if they don't want it and deny gays privileges exclusive only to marriage? Don't expect to see the opinion of gays on the government's ham-fisted measures to appease religionists popping up in your newspapers, will you? That space has been pre-booked by the usual moaners and groaners. Catholic militant, Peter Kearney told The Herald that allowing local authorities to offer a simple ceremony for gays, (only the Wee County, Clackmannanshire currently does), would be a "misuse of resources". Just to make it interesting - before I quote what he told The Herald next - let's just imagine that councils had been asked to offer parking spaces for disabled users! To illustrate more clearly Kearney's delightful 'Christian' spirit, I'm now going to replace any reference to 'gays' with the word 'disabled' and 'civil registration' with 'disabled parking'. The quote now reads: "There is unlikely to be much demand for them. Studies show that only 1.5% to 2% of the community are disabled, and from that only a very small fraction are interested in disabled parking. We would question parliamentary time and council resources being used for the supposed benefits for such a minute group. Our councils are hard pressed and under-resourced enough". Chiesa recruited the opinion of another known homophobe, Rev Jim Cowie from the Church of Scotland's so-called Board of Social Responsibility to pad out her report with Cowie's pronouncement that marriage was exclusive to a man and a woman and "not appropriate to be extended to gays". Comments from a spokesman for the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities and Patrick Harvie, Glasgow's Green MSP were tagged on at the end. Trumpeting themselves as champions of human rights, the Vatican, which currently holds special observer status in the United Nations (and seeks full status), recently allied itself with Islamic states such as Egypt, Pakistan and Malaysia and what a bastion of human rights that bunch are (NOT)! - to persuade Brazil to drop a motion protecting gays in member states for the second year in succession. The motion would've afforded protection from discrimination to gays who risk torture, stoning and imprisonment in many countries. (I didn't see The Herald report that)! The Vatican ought to be stripped of its observer status forthwith! I've no doubt Catholicism offers valuable support to many people, and amongst its numbers are those who still carry its spiritual message with integrity. But the time has come when Catholics can no longer afford to stand and watch while militants sodomise their religion in the name of their God. Marriage could never have managed to climb the charts to number three, behind Birth and Death without religionists buying up all the copies of Here Comes The Bride. Till Death Us Do Part? Until you both kill each other, more like! Do I have to spell it out? D.I.V.O.R.C.E. has been sitting in third place for years! Hen nights, wedding videos, matrimonial caterers, legions of florists and motorcades of white Rolls Royce's with catchy number-plates won't knock it off. Marriage has plummeted in the popularity stakes despite more promotional campaigns than a shopping mall of Virgin stores. The idea that Marriage must look to religion to be Saved is more stupid than the idea of Britney Spears and Jason Alexander getting married down an aisle in Tesco. If there's going to be any marriage saviour, it'll probably be us! We can turn Bri-Nylon shirts into Prada; Ideal Home magazine into Wallpaper; Fish supper lads into Naked Chefs and The Beechgrove Garden into Queer Eye For A Straight Guy! We need to start by shaking marriage up a bit. Not all gay men loose sleep when the boyf brings back some nice tail to share in their marital bed. I know that's not everybody's cup of chamomile, but someone should tell The Scottish News of the World reporter, James Mulholland. He might whip out his Biro and take down something useful for a change. He was moral finger-wagging in the direction of Celtic footballer Bobby Petta. Petta met his wife, Julie Anne, in a nightclub three years ago and married her after just six months. Their relationship hit the rocks before two years. She told SNOT World "I fell in love with a considerate and kind man who showered me with expensive gifts and gave me lots of attention". (Listen, love: 1). We're grown up now. 2). You're talking to SNOT World, not Hello)! Mulholland spun the story that Petta's "passion for x-rated computer sites destroyed their marriage". It seemed, "instead of giving his sexy model wife a hug or a kiss, the winger walked straight past into their luxury Glasgow home. When bewildered Julie Anne tried to give him a peck on the cheek, he brushed her off and marched into the kitchen. There, on the table, lay the real object of his affections a laptop computer". (I can identify with that. But then I'm after more than a peck on the cheek from a bit o' skirt when I'm at thecontrolpanel.co.uk or PC World looking at laptops)! So if that's what turned you off about your hunky Dutch footballer, young lady, it's not too late to nip off to Victoria's to pick up that nice, steady accountant from Bearsden. Obviously to give more weight to her moral stance, married "screen dream" and "blonde beauty", Julie Anne was pictured in SNOT World on her back in a cutesy negligee squeezing her tits. (Oh, COME ON, THE LADS)! Miserable Mulholland reported how the footballer spent a lot of time surfing the net for "disgusting x-rated sites". Thankfully, he was able to illustrate this by a comment from Julie Anne: "There was a page about people having threesomes the language on it was filthy". (And she's supposed to be from Townhead in Glasgow?) She claimed Bobby had been browsing a swingers' website called adultfriendfinder.com. Mulholland explained "people subscribe to the site to arrange secret kinky sex sessions with strangers". A "sickened" Julie Anne claimed Bobby had replied to FingerLickinBisexual's e-mail, saying he was looking for "sexy and discreet women who are as open-minded as I am". Revealing an attitude somewhat preoccupied with appearance, a tearful Julie Anne told SNOT World: "People might think that if a man looks at these sites then he must be some kind of pervert. But Bobby wasn't like that with me. He was a straightforward guy who was a normal run-of-the-mill lover". Well, laid out across the pages of SNOT World, you were obviously not what he was looking for, either! But, hey-ho... To each his own, eh? Last month I exposed the shocking news well at least to one Daily Record reporter it was that "people in their 70s", were getting out, looking for, and enjoying, sex! Now their stable mate, The Sunday Mail exposed its own unease about the elderly having the barefaced cheek to indulge in a sex life! A report that barely met the standard requirement for a handwritten memo, told the story of "Feels on Wheels", a sex worker who was caught popping into a sheltered housing complex "on pension day" to offer something a little more exciting than the sight of the tops of a district nurse's black seamed nylons. A "shame-faced OAP", as reporter Caroline Waterston described him, "admitted" paying GBP20 for the service. In what must have been a flurry of gathered-net twitching, "angry locals", including one who "did not want to be named", (not described as shame-faced, of course), claimed "she had brought the complex into disrepute". Unable to get on with his life, 'Morally Indignant' from Canal Court, Saltcoats told The Sunday Mail: "This used to be a nice area, a place where elderly people came to live a peaceful life. Instead we have nothing but grief". Moral police sent a report on "bottle-blonde" Sharon Howe's weekly visits to the procurator fiscal and she was promptly cautioned. Wilting faster than a purple tulip on the Cap d'Agde in summer, the story beached on the reporter, salivating for the rescue of the Sheltered Home from moral turpitude, declaring indignantly: "Sunday Mail investigators found that the sleazy sex trade is continuing... One team watched as other young women visited the homes of several male residents in quick succession". Well you guys carrying on watching and leave the rest to enjoy. Why are the tabloids so easily shocked? Haven't most of us grown up and moved on. All we can do is chuckle good-humouredly at their silly moral outrage. A leaving do for three colleagues at the Scottish Police Training Centre in Tulliallan in Fife was much like any other, an excuse for a rowdy work's night oot. Only this one included a "steamy lesbian clinch". (Decent straights of course only embrace, cuddle or hug). When p'shed workmates plant their kisses on all and sundry, even the most reserved walk away with a quick peck. As legs are kicking and kilts are lifting, the voice of outrage are either drowned out by the noise or on their way home in a taxi. Or, if you're really desperate, sobbing to reporter Andrea Vance from The Scottish Sun. According to her the "busty blonde", a police inspector "shocked colleagues with her antics". The Scottish Sun found only one partygoer who told them: "Her behaviour was way over the top quite disgraceful. This is an officer who is supposed to set an example to others... The inspector took things too far. She started snogging one of the female workers. The other woman was clearly shocked but she was really getting into it. She then when on to kiss another member of staff. Everyone else just stared in disbelief. Some were so disgusted they walked out". The rest clearly carried on enjoying themselves. But I'm still not sure who was "really getting into it"? The inspector or the lady she was snogging? There are no walls that divide adult sex from childhood sexuality. We pretend that there are. But such laws as the Age of Consent are built on ever shifting sands, enforced only by moral fervour (and tabloid pap). In Scotland, within a matter of a few decades, the gay age of consent crumbled from none at all to the age of 16. Ask many people in European countries about their opinion of an Age of Consent and don't be surprised if you're met with an expression of bewilderment. Here, so frequently has this hot potato been raised in the press, it is now fixed in our national conscience. Such is the power of the media that enforces an unshakeable belief in sexual innocence and a twelve-step plan to sexual enlightenment marked by a black suit, a white dress and two gold rings, that sex has become something of a mark of adulthood. A bit like smoking at thirteen behind the bike-sheds or getting blootered at a party when you're fifteen. You're only 'really grown up' when you've done it. But the tabloids themselves present a mass of contradictions. The News of the World, under editor Rebekah Wade, has more than any other paper, provoked hysteria around paedophilia, turning it into a bogeyman equalled only by Al-Q'aeda. "Recruiting the public to control freed child-sex offenders is welcome," cried its editorial, before confessing: "Sadly, they won't be allowed contact with these brutes". (This was the paper that helped provoke riots on the Paulsgrove estate in England). There couldn't have been a better example of such 'people power' than in Scottish editions of this newspaper where they reported: "The street where a Scots sex offender lives has been plastered with chilling stickers reading: 'Hang paedophile scum'." The stickers carried the name of the White Nationalist Party. Albert McArthur, 40, from Barrhead had been sentenced to three years probation and placed on the sex offenders' register "after admitting touching a 14-year-old papergirl's bottom". Where I come from, that's a good thing! And something of a compliment, be you 14 or 44! I really liked my comic books then and I still have a soft spot for them today and when they are as excellently drawn as this one it is a real pleasure still to read the little speech bubbles and look at the pictures. Some of us just never grow up and this is a comic book full of erotic fantasies, cute boys and strange and funny situations. In 11 short stories we follow the life and adventures of Joe Boy, and boy, is his life a joy. Every day he meets another hot guy, everybody is looking gorgeous and the weather is Californian, simply hot and wonderful. This is a great bit of escapism, brilliant to cheer up those dull and grey days we endure here just too often. Meatmen: Special SM Comics Edition, Volume 26 Edited by Winston Leyland Leyland GBP12.95 This is like the buses... you know, wait for ages and then two turn up at the same time. That's how it went with the comics this month and this one is as chalk is to cheese to the first one reviewed here. It's much darker and apart from a humorous few pages roughly two thirds through the 160 pages it's a tour de force of leather, muscles, bondage, branding irons and other fearful looking apparatus of joyous pain, and of course it's all in glorious black and white. If you liked the super hero comics of old then I'm sure you'll enjoy this book, it's like Judge Dredd with added explicit erotic fantasy adventure and greater arousal power then any photograph. Random Acts of Hatred George K. Ilsley Arsenal Pulp Press GBP9.99 And now for something completely different, there's nothing much comical in these raw and uncompromising stories exploring the thin line between love and hatred. There are rare glimpses of humour and light hidden between the primal fantasies and bitter ironies, the wayward families and the fragments of a disintegrated generation. There is the boy who gets chucked out by his family when it becomes clear that he is different or the story of the father that lets his boy get caught stealing tampons for his mum; strange and compelling stories and insights into dysfunctional families abound in these stories written with invigorating originality. Compelling, original and disturbing, this is a book I read more or less from cover to cover in one reading and then came back to re-read the more interesting stories again. I'm sure you'll do just the same... Time on Two Crosses: The Collected Writings of Bayard Rustin Edited by Devon W. Carbado and Donald Weise Cleis Press GBP11.99 Although I've been a fan of Martin Luther King more or less all my life, this book was a revelation to me as I had never before even heard of Rustin and it gives King a whole new dimension and a relevance to the gay movement I was previously unaware of. This book realises the true-worth of the figure behind Martin Luther King, Jr. who was responsible for revolutionising strategies of non-violent social protest forever. Bayard Rustin, the famed openly-gay African American organizer, taught Martin Luther King, Jr. strategies of non-violence during the Montgomery Bus Boycott, thereby launching the birth of the Civil Rights Movement. Widely acclaimed as a founding father of modern black protest, Rustin reached his pinnacle of notoriety in 1963 as organizer of the March on Washington. Time on Two Crosses showcases the extraordinary career of this black gay civil rights pioneer. Spanning five decades, the book combines classic texts ranging in topic from Gandhi's impact on African Americans, white supremacists in Congress, the anti-war movement, and the assassination of Malcolm X, with apparently never before published selections on the call for gay rights, Louis Farrakhan, affirmation action, AIDS and women's rights. Friction, Volume 7 Edited by Jesse Grant Alyson GBP11.99 As the previous editions of Friction have shown, this is the creme de la creme of one handed reading, if you don't find something here to get your blood rushing in the right place you better check if you've got a pulse at all. There are plenty of hot, horny men of all shapes and sizes getting it on in a dick hardening array of scenes and situations, ranging from shady politicians, the secrets of the Roman Catholic Church and even global conflict. Yes, I know, it sounds like very unusual subjects for queer porn stories, but believe you me, this book has some very stimulating surprises in store for you. Rarely have I enjoyed a book of this genre as much as this one, a rare combination of lust and breaking a few taboos along the way. SEXBOMB Lalli X LIVE AND RAW Chi Chi LaRue Both published by Bruno Gmuender Both priced at 18.95 each These are two coffee table books that are taking pride of place here in our house, SEXBOMB is full of very artistic black and white photography with hardly a dick in sight, while LIVE AND RAW is much more in your face with plenty of stiff dick on gorgeous models. And as we have to come to expect from any book published by this German publishing house, the quality of the photographs, the printing, the paper and the hard cover bindings are second to none. Well worth spending a little money on if these sort of books are your particular cup of tea... Dirk Kriete --------------------------------------------------------------- FILMS TO KNOW ABOUT =================== In case any of us need a change from the violence, car chases and special effects in films on the main circuits there are many alternatives this summer at art cinemas. The Italian Bread And Tulips (12A) has won a series of awards at festivals and I can understand why. Licia Maglietta has two latter teen sons and a husband who has had a mistress for years. On holiday with her family at a coach stop they don't notice she isn't with them as it drives away. A car driver offers her a lift and she ends up in Venice phoning the family to say she loves it there and will stay for a while. Her husband finally realizes how essential she is to them and sends someone to track her down. But she has got herself a job in a florist and isn't eager to return, It is a delightful comedy and will mostly be appreciated by those of us who don't feel highly valued. Also Italian and an award winner is Eugenio (15) that has the guts to tell a story of a guy growing up with Down's Syndrome and how he spends his life helping others. Watching him in a mental hospital bringing back to life a girl who survived a car crash is inspiring. It could make any of us wonder if we do enough to help those less fortunate than ourselves. A new French lady director has produced 50 per cent of a good film with her first directoral and writing movie Since Otar Left. Julie Bertuccelli sets it in the Russian related country, Georgia, where a grandmother, mother and teenage daughter live happily together. But the elderly lady pines to hear more of her son Otar who works in Paris. When her daughter and grandchild receive news he has died there they choose not to tell his mother who has heart problems. But when she sells her valuables to buy them three airplane tickets to track him down in Paris they still don't tell her and travel there with her. Miss Bertuccelli clearly doesn't know audiences want to see characters on screen who are acting with commonsense. She brilliantly casts the three females, particularly the 90 year old actress playing the grandmother. And for much of the film the love betveen them engulfs them and the audience. Moviemakers now are giving us more nudity and sexual dialogue than ever before because it doesn't add to the budget. An example of shrewd production watching the costs is the British Married/Unmarried (18). A new writer/director who wishes to be known only as Noli had strong views on colour schemes for each set which adds a luxurious edge. lt covers the romantic meanderings of two straight couples whose sex appeal combined with an imaginative script help a hundred minutes race by. It is the very first film written and directed by this man too. Anazapta is a mediaeval thriller made in Britain by a Spanish writer/director, Alberto Sciamma, to make us realise we wouldn't want to be around in the 14th century. People are dying of plague plus other maladies as horrific. But the reality achieved here makes other costume films seem obsolete. Should we be grateful nobody has chosen to lock us in a chastity belt and walk off with the key? Shattered Glass (12A) is based on a true story of an American journalist working on a current affairs magazine who bends the truth in his features to get striking headlines - till he is found out. Worth seeing as the new young actor in the lead, Hayden Christensen is an extremely pleasing sight. It is believeable when he complains to a girl in the office: "I only realise some men think I'm gay when they are wedging their tongues into my mouth." If you are giving anyone over five a treat in July look out for Two Brothers that is an amazing film combining remarkable footage of tigers and their cubs with an adult storyline. Guy Pearce is a collector of antiquities in Cambodia and Thailand whose adventures lead him to them. It is a joy for anyone interested in tiger cubs at play. CURRENT RELEASES If you are unfortunate enough to know many sadists or paedophiles you must tell them the highlight of their year will be rushing to see Song For A Raggy Boy (15) Set in an Irish reform school before 1940 the suffering experienced by the boys is beyond belief. The Irish government and tourist board should have a team of psychiatrists advising them that films should be made about some wonderful people who live in Ireland. The Catholic Church has had enough terrible publicity as have those unbalanced minds who enjoy blowing up people. If stunning men are your hobby you must see A Date With Tad Hamilton (PG) as the new leading man Josh Duhamel just may come up to your very high standards. It is a comedy in which a supermarket cashier wins a date with her favourite movie idol. I loved every minute of it. The Other Side Of The Bed (15) is Spanish and a sex comedy in which couples often mention previous relationships that didn't work as their partner preferred the same sex. It constantly amuses as they often break into song. As we have the best song writers and choreographers in the world everyone in British film production should see this now as this could start a trend. The Station Agent (15) is the most offbeat film of the year as the leading man is a handsome dwarf. Made independently by first time director and vriter Tom McCarthy he presents an intriguing story of a little man inheriting a broken down train depot in the middle of nowhere and how people react to him. It is seven eights of a masterpiece. But he couldn't think of anyway to finish it . We've all known a few drama queens, but you have to be mad for teenage girls to enjoy Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen. At an American high school a teacher decides to do a rock musical version of George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion". Orlando Bloom is a young man many of us are panting for today and in The Calcium Kid (15), a quirky comedy, he is a milkman who is persuaded to become a boxer. He went through an intense training schedule in gyms to look his very pleasant best. Strange Gardens (15) is a touching French movie about a school teacher who performs a clown act at functions to the embarrassment of his 15 year old son. Then the teacher's best friend explains how he learned to be a clown after they defied the Nazi domination in the war by blowing up a signal box. Malcolm Epstein --------------------------------------------------------------- ARTS ==== THEATRE Paines Plough, The Straits, Traverse, 5 & 8 May, 0131-228 1404, http://www.traverse.co.uk/ It's always easier to preview a show if you have already seen it and I was lucky enough to see this excellent play by Gregory Burke last August. Well it's back. It's the long hot summer of 1982 but for teenagers growing up in Gibraltar at the time of the Falklands war there are other things to think about. Doink is thick. Jock is not much better. Darren has a bit more about him and is therefore regarded as a poof. Thank god he wasn't really or he would have been dead if this pair got their hands on him. Darren has a sister, Tracy, who while no star is the brightest of the four. It really didn't need the Falklands or Gib as this is a story of racist military kids and their dim horizons and it was here I had some problems. I have so little in common with such people that I find relating to them very difficult. It's rare that I mention lighting design, but once again for Paines Plough superb work by Natasha Chivers. Our front cover is from the producers. Work Away Theatre Company, Screaming Queens Screaming Queens is a new show featuring one man, a ceramic dog, and 14 ironing boards. This largely autobiographical play by Gerry Forristal is the story of a happily gay man, from a happy family which, unfortunately for him, is settled in Waterford, a quiet, small town in rural Ireland. When Gerry finally gets round to taking off, he heads straight for the long imagined lights of Dublin. To his delight they are flashing a dazzling pink. He is absorbed, at breakneck speed, into the late 80's emerging Dublin gay scene, where he encounters a huge network of characters in bedsit land, in the pubs and indeed the clubs! Gerry revels in the life, the drinking and even the dancing. Then the expected phone call from home brings unexpected news. Before long Gerry and his Mam are both set free - but the price is unimaginably high. However as so often at the SNPG also an enjoyable education lesson. In 1931 there were 1.3 million servants in the UK. Employers commissioned paintings and artists used servants as models.Make no mistake these may be paintings of the unknown but there are some mighty fine paintings here that one wouldn't normally see exhibited in a gallery - why? Asking that question is part of the point of the Below Stairs. By 1790 90% of servants were female but most sitters were male - why? I was particularly struck by Balthasar Nebot's 1738 painting of people at work maintaining gardens. Towards the end of the exhibition we have Mrs Roberts, a cleaner, in Sir Lawrence Gowing's 1944 painting. She told the Daily Sketch "It's me isn't it? Perhaps in a hundred years I'll be hanging in a national museum." A nice joke. Neatly followed up by the final exhibit, Heath Robinson's 1921 piece "How to dispense with servants in the dining room". Do see it if you get the chance.
