Tom Forrest, the proprietor of the Cromasaig guest house in Wester Ross, has been dumped by VisitScotland after telling Stephen Nock and his partner they couldn't stay in a double room and branding them "sexual deviants". The B&B website at http://www.torridon-mountains.com/cromasaig/states "We will only allow heterosexual couples and singles to occupy our double bedded rooms". Wonder where they stand (so to speak) on TGs? And that nice Baroness O'Cathain has just soundly buggered up the Civil Partnership Bill with a well crafted amendment. Those of us who believe that Only Marriage Will Do are now saying "Told you so!". Whilst Chancellor Brown continues to collect death duties and laughs his way to the bank. But the oddest bit of discrimination I've encountered in ages is practiced by one of the UK's minor institutions, the New Statesman - an organ that was once described to me as "The dustbin of freelance journalism: if you can't sell it anywhere else, the Staggers will take it". These days, the NS is much improved and publishes serious articles from all parts of the political spectrum despite being left wing in its editorial stance. It's owned by a man who lent that well known Friend of Dorothy, Peter Mandelson, enough money to top up an interestingly obtained loan for a large domicile in London whilst that Saintly Faggot, Peter Tatchell, often writes for them. So, you wouldn't think that there would be a problem there. But there is. Their "Love On The Left" personal ads column doesn't publish same sex ads. Oh, the nice folk on the complaints line see nothing wrong with such ads and insist that they must have been published, but the ads just don't appear. Not really surprising as, with only a "Women seeking men" and a "Men seeking women" section, there's nowhere for them to go. A letter on the subject to the NS editor some weeks ago wasn't published either - the only response appeared to be a request to take the NS off the ScotsGay mailing list (although that could have been a co-incidence). Maybe they've changed their stance: I've put an ad in ScotsGay instead. Life is too short - especially when I know that several of you with too much time on your hands will be moaning at the NS - E-mail: letters@newstatesman.co.uk or Freephone 0800 0963927. In the meantime, ScotsGay continues to welcome personal ads from everybody! John Hein E-mail: editorial@scotsgay.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS ==== MODERATE SUCCESS A former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Very Rev Professor Iain Torrance, was awarded this year's "Friend for Life Award" at Pride Scotia in Glasgow. The Friend for Life Award is presented by the Equality Network as part of the annual Pride Awards, which are organised by PHACE Scotland. It is intended to recognise a person from outwith the LGBT communities who has contributed significantly to the cause of LGBT equality. The first Award was presented to the journalist Rab McNeil for his work on the successful campaign against the involvement of right-wing extremist Pat Robertson with the Bank of Scotland. During his term as Moderator, Professor Torrance used part of his Christmas 2003 sermon to speak out against homophobia in Scotland. He told a congregation in Aberdeen that the church and the rest of Scotland must shake off its homophobia. "These are spiritual matters because hatred may only be cured by a change of heart." In his sermon at St Machar's Cathedral, Prof Torrance said that in 2001-2002, there was a 200% increase in cases of syphilis among those having gay sex but that sufferers were still too afraid to seek help. "That fear in turn testifies to a persistent homophobia in society at large." Speaking about the high rate of suicide and self harm among young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people he commented that "It is almost 2004 but gay young people in Scotland are four times more likely than others to report a serious suicide attempt," his sermon continued. "We all require a change of heart because the church not least has contributed to the prevailing homophobic mindset." Professor Torrance is also quoted as saying that he would be "untroubled" by the appointment of openly gay ministers and has pointed out that on the day that the murdered teenager Jodie Jones was buried, the church's press office received 38 calls in 10 minutes on his views on gay ministers. "Which was the event of greater importance?" he asked. "How may we be set free from such compulsive and consuming obsession?" Commenting on receiving the Friend For Life Award, Professor Torrance said "If what I said while Moderator helped to uphold the human dignity of gay people, and to show Christian compassion then I am very glad." CIVILITY The Scottish Executive LGBT Staff Network next meets on the eve of Thu 29th Jul in Glasgow jointly with the Scottish branch of the Home Office Spectrum LGBT Staff Group. The network is open to all LGBT SE staff, and those employed by the main Executive agencies. E-mail: equalopportunitiesanddiversity@scotland.gsi.gov.uk or Tel: Mo Richardson on 0131-244 3881. (loads of photos) Pride Scotia exploded onto Glasgow's streets on Sat 19th June with over 3,000 folk managing to get out of their beds in time to stroll with us instead of joining the competing Orange Walk. Afterwards, the Arches were filled with loud noise and stalls as well as the odd tiffette between organisers, performers and volunteers. Next year, in Edinburgh... --------------------------------------------------------------- INTERNATIONAL NEWS FROM REX WOCKNER =================================== BLUE JAYS GO GAY The Toronto Blue Jays major-league baseball team celebrated gay Pride Community Day on June 25th. Queer As Folk's Sharon Gless threw out the first pitch and gay Olympic gold medalist Mark Tewksbury presented a check on behalf of the team to Pride Toronto. The national anthems were sung by Simone Denny, the voice behind the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy theme, "All Things (Just Keep Getting Better)." The Skydome reserved a special section for gays at field level along the baselines, and offered a 30 percent discount to gay groups of 10 or more. FUNDAMENTALISTS TRASH CINEMAS SHOWING LESBIAN FILM Zealots from India's Shiv Sena party trashed movie theaters in Mumbai (Bombay), Delhi, Indore, Jabalpur, Varanasi and other cities in mid-June to halt screenings of the new lesbian-themed Indian film Girlfriend. They broke windows, destroyed posters and burned effigies, reports said. Gay activists noted that the film is hardly pro-lesbian because it treats homosexuality as an illness. "Girlfriend reinforces all the negative stereotypes about lesbian and bisexual women," India's Organized Lesbian Alliance for Visibility and Action told the Indian Web site Sify.com. "Not only is it a cheap and titillation-oriented film masquerading as one that's liberal, but it portrays the minority community in a negative light." *Harassment up in Aussie military Reports of homosexual harassment in the Australian Defense Forces jumped from 12 cases in 2002 to 51 in 2003, The Australian reported this month. The paper obtained an internal report under freedom-of-information laws. There are 51,791 people serving in the Australian military. *Panamanian gays seek partner rights The gay-rights group Association of New Men and Women of Panama is collecting signatures to place a same-sex partnership bill before the nation's Legislative Assembly. The organization plans to collect four times the required 500 signatures and will submit the proposal on Sep 1st, as the newly elected president and legislators come into office. *Ontario gays wrong about their HIV status The newest Ontario Men's Survey has found that 27 percent of gay men who thought they were probably HIV-negative tested positive via saliva samples taken when they were questioned. The survey quizzed more than 5,000 men across the Canadian province. Other findings included: About 25 percent of those surveyed engaged in unprotected anal sex with a casual male partner at least once in the previous three months; the percentage of gay men who acknowledged barebacking at least once has doubled since 1991 when a similar survey was conducted; and 45 percent of those questioned never discuss their HIV status with casual sex partners. *Taiwanese blackmailer jailed A Taiwanese man has been sent to prison for seven years for blackmailing gay men he met on the Internet, the Taipei Times has reported. Chou Ming-teh, 43, blackmailed more than 100 men he met in chat rooms. He would find out their names and where they worked, then demand money not to out them to their employers, police said. His victims included teachers, military officers and bank managers. *Pope disses gays again Pope John Paul II called gays self-centered during a June meeting with US bishops at the Vatican. "Rights are at times reduced to self-centered demands: the growth of prostitution and pornography in the name of adult choice, the acceptance of abortion in the name of women's rights, the approval of same-sex unions in the name of homosexual rights," he said. "In the face of such erroneous yet pervasive thinking you must do everything possible to encourage the laity in their special responsibility for evangelizing culture and promoting Christian values in society and public life." Catholic teaching forbids all sex that is not between a man and a woman who are married to each other, and prohibits any ejaculation, even within a marriage, that could not lead to pregnancy. *Somali gays fear death The group Queer Somalia has told the African gay Web site Behind the Mask that the biggest problem for Somali gays is fear they will be murdered. Islamic law is applied haphazardly in the nation, which continues to lack a central government. "My people don't understand what a homosexual is," activist Faro told the Web site. "They only know that through their religious law, the solution is to kill. There is no law to protect or help queers in Somalia, and Queer Somalia cannot be public or make demands on the government because there is no government with whom we can talk. The situation for queer people in Somalia is very dangerous." Faro also said Somali gays seem to have a higher suicide rate than the general population, in part due to extremely homophobic family situations. --------------------------------------------------------------- OBAR DHEADHAINN - ABERDEEN ========================== Hi there! Well here's what's been happening north of anywhere. Pride was a great day for the LGBT community in the north east of Scotland and there was something for everyone. It was good to see such a mix of people there and the beer tent staffed by Indigo proved popular on the warm sunny afternoon. The comments I've heard seem to reflect the fact that everyone had a really great time. A sober editor (due to the lack of real ale - and a possible request for next year's Pride) is stated as saying that he had 'thoroughly enjoyed himself' and it was 'a damned good day out and all credit to the organisers'. Many people gave up a lot of time and effort to make this day a success and it was good to see such a turn out on the day. Matthew did a great job of bringing the day together and thanks should go to him and all those who gave their support in organising the event. After a short break Matthew is now off to Australia to represent the Scottish LGBT Youth Parliament in Sydney and have a bloody good holiday. With the recent closure of Abacos on Market Street we are left with a gap in the market for a gay friendly cafe bar. It would be nice to have somewhere central and popular, relaxed atmosphere with good coffee and food. It doesn't have to be exclusively gay - I think we've seen in the last few years that the gay population couldn't support an exclusively gay venue during the day. But somewhere that was mixed and comfortable would do. Is there any one out there thinking about it just now - because now's the time to act. Anyway, as usual, the rumours about where is going to open next are flying but I'm not getting too excited just yet. Bar Indigo on the Adelphi will now be open from 5pm for a trial period with Michael from Abacos behind the bar to serve the drinks. It remains the place to go in Aberdeen if you want a night out with the LGBT crowd. With summer here most of the groups and organisations are going through a quiet period so not much to report there. However, Aberdeen Lesbian Group has a couple of events during Jul on a Wed eve. These include football and rounders or if it's raining - pool and a video night. Contact the Women's Centre on Aberdeen (01224) 625010 for details. Well that's it for now, have a great summer wherever you are. Tivoli E-mail: Tivoli_abdn@yahoo.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- DUN EIDEANN - EDINBURGH ======================= CC Blooms celebrates its 10th Birthday party on Wed 28th Jul. Fun starts early on but CC's doesn't usually get busy until after 11pm. There's lots of entertainment throughout the night including a charity raffle for an HIV organisation in Edinburgh. There will also be a Cher and Kylie tribute on stage to coincide with Cher's retirement and Kylie thinking she is a gay icon. Nevertheless, these tribute strits are very good having seen them before and at the end of the day it's a laugh. Unfortunately, unlike other years there will be no strippers! Never mind maybe another time. Also a big thanks to Brian and Diane for putting up with all for so long! One of the best and least crowded nights at CCs is "Monday nights are Party On nights" with DJ Christine downstairs providing all the latest dance tunes as well as a couple of golden oldies - a good night if you have over indulged in Planet Out's famous Pink Pound on a Mon and feel the need to dance the night away! Entry at Planet is still GBP1 but the pound drinks are now GBP1.09 - Brewery rules so don't moan at the bar staff they put up with enough shit from the punters. Also a big massive thanks to DJ Georgy Boy providing all the best Blondie tunes at CC's very own after show party on the night of the Blondie concert at the Playhouse. Monday nights are still busy at MOOD in the Omni Centre. Polysuper Cheez is the theme with DJ Pete Himsworth and the gang providing all the very best in camp tunes every Monday 11pm -3am. Entry is only a couple of pounds and drink promos run throughout the whole night. Polysuper also celebrated their sixth birthday at Mood recently - so happy birthday guyz! U can also catch Pete Himsworth on Fri and Sat downstairs at the Newtown Bar until 2am. JOY celebrates its 11th (!) Birthday on Sat 31st Jul at the Venue. Door staffs seem really cool and you get served nae bother at the bar so I have no major complaints! The special guest DJ is Queen Maxine plus Maggie and Alan Joy, Trendy Wendy, Sally F and Brett King. Toxic is a new night to replace Metrosexual at eGo. It launches on Thu 8th Jul and will be a new weekly event for the community. GBP3 entry and doors open at 11pm. The usual eGo drink promos run throughout the night so go early cos if not you will spend half your night at the bar that is if you don't break your neck on the slippery floor! Word on the street is that eGo is changing hands soon so let's hope who ever gets it has a major refurb. The door staff have now changed as well but seem pretty sound and all other staff seem pretty cool and up for a laugh. James Longworth is holding a Big Gay Foam Party on Sat 10th Jul on both floors of eGo. James provides all the tunes upstairs and Alan Cross in the Cocteau Lounge. Entry is GBP7 - probably to pay for the Foam! Blaze is also running every 1st 2nd and 4th Fri of every month at eGo with a new cute DJ - don't know the name guys sorry! Bootylushous had a fantastic first birthday party at Medina on Sun 2nd May (see photo). The city's best DJ, Trendy Wendy, was the guest DJ for the night and will also be on the decks at Booty on Sun 18th Jul. You can also catch Trendy Wendy and the Tackno gang at her end of month Sun chaos at Massa and Pink Pound at Planet Out every Mon. There is also talk of more extended licence nights for Booty to help with their charity nights linked with 'help the homeless' and 'streetwork'. Now that the summer months are here - try some tapas at Sala Cafe Bar in Broughton St. Regular entertainment is on at the weekend evenings and an excellent tapas menu meant that they earned "The place to eat in the LGBT Community in 2003" prize - no doubt they will win again this year. There is also a gallery space and the women's group meet informally for drinks every Wed. Staff are extremely friendly and prices are reasonable for food and drink. Alan E-mail: weealan@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTTISH MEDIA MONITOR ====================== Garry Otton Sniffs Moral Outrage The mouthpiece of religious militancy in Scotland, The Scottish Daily Mail rattled off another propaganda exercise. Home affairs editor, Graham Grant reported that "promiscuity" had "sparked a huge rise in sexually transmitted diseases". This had apparently "prompted health chiefs to advise women to 'abstain from sex'." Oh, great, the straight boys are just gonna love that! Good job the gay boys are there to give them a hand. It was the usual tale; fingers pointing at "the Scottish Executive's liberal health policies..." (Whatever they're supposed to be)! The editorial leant its full support, blaming "...decades of permissive, 'non-judgmental' sex education dispensed by liberal-minded experts and politicians" a "consequence of the discredited policies of the sex education industry and its politically correct acolytes in the Scottish Executive". Grant gushed that "critics" were up in arms. Not surprisingly, one of these turned out to be David Davidson, health spokesman for the Scottish Tories! He moaned: "The Executive is basically saying: 'Have sex and don't worry if it goes wrong - there are always abortions or morning-after pills'." The other was our old friend; Peter Kearney who declared that the Executive's "value-free approach" had "catastrophically failed". After laying out the statistics the report declared that "experts" had warned "the only way to stop the growth was to encourage young people to follow a new American craze, the Silver Ring Thing. The scheme involves youngsters buying a ring and pledging to remain celibate until their wedding night". This ghastly American evangelical Christian group bathed themselves in the free publicity before they arrived in Glasgow. This pathetic report was 'balanced' with news that Murray Petrie, chairman of NHS Tayside's acute services division "has urged giving sex education lessons to children at the age of five", an entirely sensible idea, which worked for the Netherlands. The editorial cried over the "harsh lesson of a failed sex policy" despite the utter failure of such policies backed by religious militants and some $270 million of Republican government funding in the US. The failure has surely been the inability of the Scottish Executive to properly implement successful campaigns instigated by our European neighbours, n'est pas? So, if The Daily Mail's warped idea of a good sex education was so successful, why has it not worked in Catholic schools, since they, after all, form part of the collective high rates of STIs and pregnancies plaguing Scotland? Or was that just something else the Catholic authorities have tried to conceal, along with the myth that their schools provide a better education? The Mail's editorial declared: "This is insane. If endless instruction in every variety of sexual activity is force-fed to schoolchildren, it is absurd to imagine they will not engage in homework". The editorial also begged that the public insist ministers and health boards "stop the premature sexualisation of schoolchildren - effectively a form of abuse - and give them back their childhood". They were on a roll... "The value of sexual abstinence and of marriage must also be promoted", it added. "Parents should not ask this of the Executive - they should demand it". But parents should think very carefully before setting off for the school gates on the instruction of militants. Studies at Columbian University have shown that whilst chastity pledges might deter kids from having sex for a year or two, nine out of ten of them still go on to have sex before marriage, but worse, they were found to be more than 30 per cent more likely not to use contraception! I'm surprised more of the Scottish media, trumpeting the US Bible-bashing Silver Ring Thing, would not have put Scotland's kids first and thought to mention this. That shameful blot in Scotland's history: The repeal of Clause 28, was no excuse for the Scottish Executive to prevent the publication of its findings of a review ordered by First Minister Jack McConnell in 2002 into religious observation at Scottish schools. Such school assemblies always were pointless affairs, best remembered as shuffling from one foot to the other while mouthing the Lord's Prayer and choking on giggles after Dougie McPherson farted over the Head's sermon. It only shows how divisive an issue it is that someone should now be leaking its findings. It advises that 'organised acts of worship' should not be a formal part of the curriculum. The Sunday Herald reported: "The review group's policy has been endorsed by a panel including representatives of the Church of Scotland and Catholic Church as well as bodies representing headteachers, parents and minority groups". But who exactly are the 'minority groups' represented in this review? Are they the one per cent of religionists who are sufficiently dedicated to their cause that they are bothered to attend a church, or does this refer to the same amount of out-and-out gays who owe very little to the Church in upholding our human rights? Flashback 2000 and Scotland echoed to the march of jackboots as moral conservatives paraded under the flag of 'Keep the Clause'. The Scottish Executive soon buckled as The Daily Record - the Der Strmer of the militants under its editor Martin Clarke - sang the praises of The Three Macs, Scottish ministers rooted in the old traditions of Lanarkshire Labour: Henry McLeish, Jack McConnell and Tom McCabe. There were rumours of leaks to The Daily Record. Ministers leaking against ministers who were bravely trying to do the right thing against a scandalous backlash from 'Keep the Clause', funded and run, as it was, by a powerful militant religionist, Brian Souter and his cronies. The Daily Record and a gang of other right-wing papers led the rabble. The stories against Wendy Alexander and those repealing the Clause were brutal and personal. The media recently reported that, as First Minister, Jack McConnell faces an investigation for leaking details of the future on Scottish Opera. After 55 leading academics were contacted by Scotland on Sunday to add their names to a letter signed by editor John McLellan accusing the executive of mishandling its future, John McLellan's name subsequently disappeared upon publication, but a row over McConnell's leaking of information over Scottish Opera's future has caused a furore. McConnell dismissed it as, "all nonsense". He is a ruthless operator. As he turned on the Scottish National Party and the Conservatives, The Sunday Herald reported him "off-key throughout... waffling and evading", and "in danger of disappearing up his own arias". It is surprising to find the Tories demanding what must be up to GBP10m of taxpayer's money to be injected into an ailing Scottish Opera, but there you go! Scotland on Sunday reported how McConnell transformed himself from old Labour into New as Blair repositioned his party. They reported: "He even allowed his radical deputy and close friend, Tommy Sheppard, to be pushed out of his job on the say of London". An 'insider' told them: "If you look at all of McConnell's friends from those days, they no longer associate with him. He left a lot of bad blood. He is a chameleon". An MP said: "Apart from nationalism, I'd say Jack was a principle-free zone. You'd struggle to think of any act he has been associated with that had anything to do with principle. I can't see any motives apart from self-advancement". A 'party insider' told SOS: "There was this occasion when a number of us had a dispute with the party management. Jack... strode into the office one afternoon, full of himself, and said, 'You'll get no help from your union. I've just had a round of golf with your general secretary'." The paper reported: "During the Donald and Henry era, there was stuff in the papers constantly. (Much of it appeared in The Daily Record, which supported a clause that singled out gays in education). Then when Jack became First Minister, suddenly the leaking against colleagues in the cabinet stopped. Why was that? Was it because peace and harmony and fraternal love overcame the party as they were led by their wonderful new leader, or was it because all the shits who had been doing the leaking were now in post?" Cardinal Winning might be six-feet under, but many of the vile religionists who helped fuel the hate-filled Keep the Clause campaign are still in active service. All Scotland's Catholic churches have been in receipt of a letter penned by the homophobic Bishop Joseph Devine, Bishop of Motherwell, urging parents to turn off their TVs and change 'couch potato' lifestyles into something more worthy to counter a "daily diet of soaps and drama full of storylines supporting divorce, contraception, abortion and homosexuality". But there was another bad smell in the air. Martin Clarke, the former editor of The Daily Record who orchestrated a campaign of terror against gays during the Keep the Clause debacle, was back from Ireland on Sunday to take on a new post as executive editor of The Mail on Sunday. He will be based in London. And recently, Tom Hunter bequeathed GBP5m to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. You couldn't miss the story. It made most of the papers. With references to him following in the footsteps of philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, it was a remarkably successful exercise in self-promotion. I remember receiving a call from Hunter's office, begging me to remove a report on the Scottish Media Monitor's website of a story in The Scottish News of the World on an alleged sexual dalliance with his secretary in a roadside motel with very thin walls. Of that I made no moral judgement, the only thing that riled me was that Tom Hunter was a man who had put his name forward as a sponsor of Brian Souter's private opinion poll aimed at preventing gays receiving equal treatment in schools. Whilst Scottish Television wrestled with a decision whether or not to broadcast a party political broadcast by the Scottish Socialist Party accusing Tony Blair of lying over the Iraq war; or whether the BNP's broadcast should go out at all, the blatantly homophobic Reverend J George Hargreaves, leader of Operation Christian Vote went out on BBC One Scotland without any intervention. Only the Communication Worker's Union (CWW) spoke out, promising to back post office workers refusing to deliver their leaflets. Interestingly enough, Hargreaves is black and used the platform to challenge racism! No, wait! There's more...! His homophobic campaign rode bareback on royalties earned from penning the hit single, sung by bisexual club entrepreneur Stefan King's former friend, Sinitta: 'So Macho'. Now would we have boogied so hard had we known the song might've referred to muscular Christianity? He told Scotland on Sunday: "...It was for the gay scene to go mad to on poppers". But adds: "I was never gay..." (Aye, right you are)! Worryingly, compared to the Greens who polled around 79,000 votes at the Euro elections in Scotland, this extreme Christian party polled around 20,000, demonstrating, along with news that two brothers were beaten up after hugging each other in a pub, that Scotland still has a long way to go before it emerges from the Dark Ages. It's parade time! Trying to negotiate my way through lines of hatchet-faced members of a quasi-religious cult decorated in orange sashes, I was blocked by an elderly bouncer. Imagine that happening at Pride! A bit of Queer Eye for a Proddie Guy might teach them something, if only good manners! The Orangemen's efforts to portray themselves as a harmless group celebrating with pipes and drums, doesn't hold water with me. Chatting to a policewoman walking beside me on Glasgow's Pride march, she quite openly expressed her dread of having to police them. Not that the marches weren't well organised, but because of the dross they attract. With news that the First Minister will be appointing an expert to help curb the hundreds of these marches blighting the west coast of Scotland brought The Herald's Melanie Reid out in blisters: "...Religious marches have no place in this society any longer. They shame Scotland. The only people to benefit from them are publicans and few dozen sad bigots..." Monsignor Peter Smith, writing in The Herald, described Glasgow as "a city in which a tiny band of bigots blackmails the population". (Given the threats from Orangemen if marches were to be curbed, that might be an accurate description, but he has a very short memory indeed given the Catholic's record on bigotry)! Remember, it was moral conservatives and religionists, not liberals who made rich pickings for the fascists looking to swell their numbers in the thirties. Fascism never dies; it only sleeps. We must remain ever vigilant. The media has little concern for those it tramples on in the process of manufacturing outrage to satisfy its net-twitching readers. The Sunday Mail's Charles Lavery is rewarded handsomely for his efforts. He focused on a gentle, retired man who ran an antique valuation business living for many years the quiet village of Buchlyvie in Stirlingshire. He had cared for his wife Elizabeth before she died of Parkinson's disease. Only then, did he courageously take steps to act on "something that has been inside me since the day I was born". 'Jim' became Gladys, the oldest Scot to change gender. She begged rather touchingly in The Sunday Mail: "I don't want to say too much about it just now because my daughter is not allowing me to see my wee grandson, so it's all a bit difficult... I'm going to hospital but not at the moment. This is pretty difficult for me just now because of the situation with my immediate family". Any decent person would leave it that. But The Sunday Mail, always first to preach to its readers on morality, put its own needs for a good story first. "The OAP's sex change" had "stunned family and friends... set tongues wagging... He walked into the two local pubs and the local grocer and introduced himself as Gladys. He also went to church in twin set and pearls". He "attends classes in deportment and dressing properly". The tabloid went shopping around for some outrage and found a neighbour who said: "...You would have thought he would be a wee bit past all that at his age". Gladys... There's a place in heaven for you, my love! And Charles Lavery... There's a place for you too... I only hope you can stand the heat! A few things to get through this month and very little time to cover them, so here goes: First: news of a new gay-friendly venue in Arbroath, the Blue Angel Inn located at 42 Millgate Loan. There will be an official opening on 16th Jul with live music, hopefully the beer garden will also be open for then. They also plan to hold an LGBT night on the last Wed of each month, first to be on 28th Jul. This will involve a quiz with various drinks and cash prizes depending on attendance. They are also home to a new women's football team and darts team, both meeting up Thu nights, new members very welcome. Lastly, being an Inn it serves up food, and pretty good at that having sampled it myself with the beau whilst out cycling. Diversitay have published the long awaited report on the findings of the various consultations held around the Tayside region. The document covers various areas affecting the lives of LGBT people in the region including Diversitay services, health issues, same sex abuse, the police, and council services and goes on to make various recommendations. Of most interest, however, are the findings and recommendations made on what most people consider beneficial for the local area. It was found that Diversitay, with the help of other local organisations and agencies, should establish an LGBT centre in Dundee initially but with the aim of creating satellite centres in outlying rural areas. This was why Diversitay held a further consultation on Tue 15th Jun (apologies for last month's column in which I said it was a Wednesday). It was well attended, and various ideas and thoughts put forward about how the centre should be formed, what it should be there to do and who should run it. A further consultation session will be held later this year which will provide another opportunity for people to put forward their thoughts and ideas about a possible centre. More details will follow when known. Out and Brooklyn's Bar have all the usual stuff on, various drinks offers, karaoke and the various theme nights. One of particular note is the "Wet Pussy Party", launching on Tue 6th Jul - this will be a monthly night just for girls. Entry is GBP5 including membership and GBP3 thereafter. Guys are welcome as guests of members. Charlie's Bar hold their monthly quiz night on Tue 6th Jul and on the Wed there is a farewell party to Brian. He has been a regular fixture of the scene for the past few months and contributed in various ways, organising the first few quiz nights at Charlie's and attending various meetings and events throughout the area. So, another Pride March passes in not so sunny Glasgow. I myself did not attend, top on my list of excuses being that my bigoted upstairs neighbour decided to keep me awake until 4.30 in the morning. Also I have to admit that I am not convinced that Pride or the Gay and Lesbian community at large is really open to the inclusion of the Transgendered community or indeed those of a bisexual orientation. If I am to be totally fair, I am not that convinced about the so called Transgendered community either. The level of elitism, and general self-delusion is depressing. I always felt that having received help and support from many different quarters, that one should give back something in return. However more and more I am coming to realise that the attraction of going 'stealth' as it is termed, is not to avoid the prejudices of the general public, but to escape the clutches of the 'T' community itself. I have fought my corner and pushed the boundaries where I thought it both possible and necessary. I believe I have paid my dues and now I intend to free myself from the ties that bind. Remember folks whatever you find to do: be safe. Angharad E-mail: Angharad@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- BOOKS ===== Scottish Pride 101 reasons to be proud of your Scottish heritage Heather Duncan GBP9.99 Well the good old Americans have written this here little hardback book all about Scotland (well from the write up it sounds like the Americans). Since they arrived on mass in the sixties and seventies and into the early eighties in their Rupert bear golfing cheque trousers they have begun to be very excited about discovering their Scottish roots. To be fair to this woman I do feel that there is a genuine deep love that she feels for Scotland and it is this reason that I decided to write about the book. There are a lot of things to be admired about the Scots and their history and one hopes that the pride and deep respect for the people of the past and their struggles against overwhelming odds to be free of the murderous English, and we should not forget the contributions made to the world by the Scots. Whisky, television, telephone, penicillin, raincoats are just a few of these contributions. There are a tremendous amount of actors, poets, statesmen etc. etc. who come from Scotland but you will have to buy the book for that information, well worth it for under a tenner. A Taste For Blood Diana Lee GBP9.99 This book kept me riveted from start to finish. The story is much more than the lesbian fiction it says it is. I didnt know what to say about this book so I looked at the press release and thought they say it better than I ever could, simple and to the point so here it is:- Ryan was born when Vikings raided the British coast and the clans of Scotland feuded with blood lust. Raped, killed and reborn as a vampire at the tender age of sixteen, she is now over eight hundred years old. Over the centuries, Ryan has ravaged the lives of many helpless victims, and now she has risen to a position of power and influence in Victorian-era Scotland. In her years she has loved many women, but none has so touched her life as those descended from her first lover, Carissa - a girl on the edge of womanhood. A great read and to not read this because it says lesbian fiction would be like shooting yourself in the foot and would I feel do the author a great injustice. Built Ron Lloyd GBP23.95 Bruno Gmuender It says on the back, this book is produced for the physique connoisseur. I personally don't like the pictures of the men in here as they all seem to look very much like action men figures and seem to have styled themselves on looking plastic and unreal, they may think they look good and I am sure there must be some of you out there who love this sort of thing and Ron Lloyd does seem to have a good reputation in bringing us erotic male photography. Built - postcard book 56 Ron Lloyd GBP4.50 Bruno Gmuender Well here we are the postcards from said book I hope you enjoy. Spartacus International Web Guide 3rd Edition PB GBP12.95 Bruno Gmuender Probably the best gay internet guide ever. Andy Martin --------------------------------------------------------------- COMEDY ====== The Thursday Show The Stand Comedy Club York Place Edinburgh This improvisation comedy night featured four comedians: Simon McKinney, Ewan John, Mark Bratchpiece and Parrot. Simon McKinney's act lacked the delivery of a professional comic. However, his satirical 'anti- Saddam' humour went down a storm with the largely American audience. Ewan John similarly disappointed, only raising a few smiles. An example of one of his jokes would be "I went to buy millionaires shortbread I've not got any money." Predictable, yes but it raises a smile. Mark Bratchpiece was without a doubt the most entertaining of the four with Parrot coming in a close second. Bratchpiece offered classic Scottish humour and provided a good opening to his act. Parrot played on the audience's taboos about sex, which entertained the men in the audience. These two saved the night as far as this reviewer is concerned. If you take my advice, however, you'll stick to the Monday night at the Stand where you get in cheaper and the comedy is of a much higher standard. Unless you're American, in which case you'll love The Thursday Show. Laura McGrath --------------------------------------------------------------- FILMS TO KNOW ABOUT =================== In their wisdom the cinema circuit bookers are keeping us waiting till early October for one of the most memorable films of the year - an original comedy about the problems of growing up gay in Canada - "Mambo Italiano" (15). Angelo is the son of possessive Italian parents in Montreal who tells them he is moving into a flat with a former college friend who is now a policeman. Why can't you stay at home until you get married they ask together. Angelo finally decides to come out and admit he and his flatmate are lovers. When the shock subsides, his boyfriend decides he can't face admitting to the local Italian community that he is gay and, to avoid that, he decides to marry a local girl. Duplications of this situation have happened in Britain for the last century. But it is easier to grow up gay now as the commercial world realizes that most gay people have vast amounts of money to spend without the continual costs of bringing up children. Romantics amongst us will love "The Prince And Me" (PG). A son of the Danish royal family wants to be anonymous studying at an American college, falls in love with another student and takes her home to meet his stunned parents. As the couple are extremly pleasing to look at and the locations are breathtaking it is a delightful film. If you like it half as much as I did it is money well spent. September brings us a curious concoction "The City Of No Limits" - a Spanish movie set in Paris where an elderly father in hospital is visited by his adult offspring and their spouses convinced he is out of his mind. One helps him track down his secret past in the French capital. Paris locations make it and a new bearded leading man, Leonado Sbaraglia, whose fiance has problems keeping her hands off him while his sister in law is desperate to drag him into bed. I knew exactly how they both felt. "Blueberry" (15) is a western in which transvestite comedian Eddie Izzard is a tough cowboy can you believe. Mostly memorable for red indian magic and special effects although the manpower could keep you awake. There are some people whose idea of bliss is the Bahamas on holiday being taken in a party of people to the deserted ocean and diving in their wet suits to study all. "Open Water" suggests it is feasible the boat could sail away without them and nobody notices their absence. If you want to know what it is like to be abandoned at sea surrounded by hungry sharks this is the film for you. CURRENT RELEASES Italian movie makers must be convinced their public is tired of TV commercials breaking up their films as they are now making movies in two parts and each one runs for three hours. Part 1 of "The Best Of Youth" starts in the sixties telling of the work and family life for over 20 years with the cast ageing in front of you. The unknown performers are attractive and the details of their lives interesting. But when a son studying psychiatry tells his father there is no cure for homosexuality I kept wondering why he didn't add "Or heterosexuality." You must have seen that masterpiece "Some Like It Hot". "Connie And Carla" (12a) is an updated version with two girls on the run from gangsters who join a show of female inpersonators so people will think they are men. If you are a David Duchovny fan you must see this as he looks even better on the big screen. Ashley Judd is an impressive woman and "Twisted" (15) proves yet again her style can carry a movie. Here she is a police inspector hunting a serial killer. She can't believe that stunning guys she has spent the night with are later murdered. If you haven't noticed Miss Judd you must see her here. If there was any justice she would be a top star now. People have shocks meeting people through emails, but in "Eurotrip" (15) a young American is lucky going to Berlin. There are many troubles along the way running into a soccer hooligan in London, Vinnie Jones, before adventures in Paris and Amsterdam. A good looking cast keep it bubbling and new leading man Scott Mechlowicz has beautiful eyes and lips full enough to get lost in. Those of us still Ben Affleck obsessed, since Jennifer Lopez dropped him, could enjoy a humble domestic comedy "Jersey Girl" (12a) . His wife dies in childbirth and he brings up a daughter through many dramas. Mr Affleck is as mouth watering as ever. As over 33 million discs were sold by black recording star Tupac before he was murdered at 25 there could be many interested in "TUPAC:Resurrection" (15). It is a tragic tale of his rise from poverty to luxury before he was shot. As the same thing happened to Beatle John Lennon in New York it shows yet again the world is scattered with unbalanced minds full of envy. Those who doubt black dancers are the best in the world should see "You Got Served" (PG). Dance troupes compete for prizes in big dollar bets in US discos. You have never seen such energy. Anyone who doubts money can cure most of our problems must see "The Cat's Meow" (12a). Newspaper millionaire William Randolph Hearst shot someone by mistake in a jealous rage on his yacht in the twenties. It is covered up because everyone on the cruise needed his goodwill. Eddie Izzard is effective playing sex starved Charlie Chaplin. Joanna Lumley steals every scene as an astringent writer. That clever Spanish director Pedro Almodovar seems to have run out of ideas when planning "Bad Education". It starts with a priest's interest in 12 year old boys and continues years later when he has given up the priesthood and is blackmailed to finance the sex change of a transvestite drug addict. . This will give straight audiences a very unfortunate idea of homosexuality as so many of the less educated still associate it with pdophiles. As most transvestites are not drug addicts it also doesn't do them any favours. While I am bored with special effects in Hollywood movies which don't make up for a dreary script "The Day After Tomorrow" (12a) is the great exception to the rule. If the world's climate changed with oceans engulfing the land and south pole blizzards overpowered us it could not be more realistically shown than in this film. Frightening but fascinating. DVD WORLD Many consider the 1971 Luchino Visconti film "Death In Venice" a masterpiece. Set in a wealthy Venetian hotel in 1911 its attention to detail in costumes, sets and locations is extraordinary. Dirk Bogarde's infatuation with a teenage young man is handled in such good taste there are those who tell me they have seen this film six times. The soundtrack of Mahler symphonies on this Warner DVD adds to the perfection. Devotees of early cinema will be fascinated by "The Wonderful Horrible Life Of Leni Riefenstahl". Leni was a beautiful actress in the first German talkies in the early thirties who was brighter than your average starlette and moved into directing instead. She brilliantly made documentaries like "Triumph Of The Will" in 1935 promoting the Nazi party and an account of the Olympic games in 1938. After the war she was ridiculed for her contact with Hitler. In this Eureka DVD at 91 years of age she explains eloquently she had no political affiliations and in the thirties Germans were only aware Hitler was finding jobs for many millions of unemployed. In 1979 Elton John became the first western pop act to play Soviet Russia. On a Carlton DVD "To Russia With Elton" his St. Petersburg show is an historical landmark for anyone who had ever liked him. Russians had pirated his records and flocked to see the guy who has since become an institution of British show business. Malcolm Epstein --------------------------------------------------------------- PRETTY PICTURES =============== Nathan Coley The Fruitmarket Gallery, Market St, Edinburgh until 18 July This exhibition is billed as being how we relate to the built environment but to me it was as much about truth and fiction. The Land Marked, a 3 minute video on the demolition of buildings speaks of the way beautiful structures and other features have been destroyed in the name of progress. One only need look around one in any large city to see the damage that has been done. Pigeon Lofts is a series of slides about the ad-hoc structures built by ordinary individuals. It is accompanied with a fictional text about the images.Going upstairs one encounters The Lamp of Sacrifice, 286 Places of Worship, Edinburgh 2004. Coley went through the Edinburgh Yellow Pages, picked out all the places of worship listed, and made a cardboard model of each. This is work on a huge scale. I was reminded of Antony Gormley's Field, but where Gormley's work consists of crude clay figures which totally occupy the gallery space Coley's far superior work is carefully crafted and one walks through the models - a far more intimate experience. One sees these buildings every day, but normally we look up at them, here we look down on them. Had I not been told these were places of worship I would have sworn that one of them was a multi-storey car park. The final major piece is Lockerbie. Coley was the unofficial artist in residence at the Lockerbie trial and there are images from the trial but the central piece of this is a reconstruction of the witness box. The original is in the Imperial War Museum, amazingly in the "weapons & firearms" collection. This is clearly about truth and fiction. Which was that trial mainly about? Definitely the best exhibition I've seen at The Fruitmarket for a long time Alan Davie, Peter Lynch, and Jill Bennett Edinburgh Printmakers, Union St, Edinburgh, until 17 July, Three very different artists. Alan Davie's prints are of elaborate patterns. Quite fine and well worth it for an empty wall. Clearly a marvellous talent but it didn't have that "wow" factor for me. Peter Lynch had two types of image. Screenprints where the same 3 prints are repeated in various colours is hardly an original idea. Andy Warhol springs to mind. Lynch's other works consisted of oil on canvas where the oil was so thick as to make three dimensional patterns, but of nothing in particular. I found the arrangement of chairs in the middle of the room of more interest than the works on the wall - a bad sign. The comments book seemed to consist of "It's great" followed by "It's crap" and so on. Make your own mind up. Jill Bennett's series of lithographs shows a vivid use of colour and is the highlight of this exhibition. Based on pigeon houses on the Greek island of Tinos it is a marvellous series of prints. Portrait Miniature Scottish National Portrait Gallery, until 5 September. This is deceptive. It is held in the space beyond the bookshop, which makes one think it will be a small exhibition, but as they are miniatures this is a huge exhibition. Contrasted with 150 artworks from the Galleries collection from the mid 16th Century to the present day are contemporary works by Moyna Flannigan. Flannigan's style is to use non photographic methods to produce more stylised images that are somewhere between cartoons and caricatures. For me it did not work. Of the rest it is notable that the fashion for these ran out in the middle of the 19th Century when photography emerged. Not I suspect a coincidence. There are many fine works here; some of well known people by unknown artists, some of unknown people by well known artists, and many by well known people by well known artists. I wonder how many the Galleries have in their collection of unknown people by unknown artists. None are on display. Jasper Johns Since 1983 Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Past and Present 10 July - 19 September GBP4.00 (concessions GBP3.00) Oh, I'm looking forward to this. This American artist, born in May 1930, is seen by many as the father of Pop Art, challenging the then establishment of abstract expressionism. Known, at least to me, mainly for his early work of flags, letters, and numbers, his later work, which features in this exhibition, shows a change of direction. 90 works are exhibited in their first and only showing at a UK venue. In fact this is first exhibition of his work in Britain for almost 30 years. An artist who has exercised a profound influence on Western painting in the second half of the Twentieth Century this is definitely one to be seen.
