And there is plenty to choose from. These must see shows and many others will be reviewed in the next edition of ScotsGay, which will be out later during the Festival. You've probably already noticed the picture featuring the naked men (apologies to those reading the online text only edition). It's an image for Cock Tale (C Chambers Street, 4th-30th August), a new translation of Chaucer's The Nun's Priest's Tale, brought to you by 'Another Midas', who won plaudits for "Dirty... Little... Secrets" last year. Cock Tale is the story of a dashing young man who is gifted with great looks and a beautiful voice, and the two women who, not to put too fine a point on it, want his cock. Variously described as weird, funny, camp, nasty, and tragic, expect a visually challenging hour that is well worth the effort. Shelly Cooper (Gilded Balloon Teviot, 6th - 29th August) was born a man. And as she frequently proclaims, having experienced life as both sexes there is no one better to share a good laugh at the differences and similarities between the two. This sharply observed stand-up comedy is a treat for all those that look at life with a smile and an open mind. Why are teenage boys doing laundry and cooking whilst young women drink pints and get laddish? Shelly Cooper has the answer. Topping and Butch (Pleasance Courtyard, 4th - 29th August and Underbelly, 14th-29th August), those marvellous big gay stars on the UK's comedy circuit since 1998, have taken mainstream theatres and stand-up comedy venues by storm. And they've done it without compromising on an ounce of their material. "We've been at it for ages!" grins Andrew 'Butch' Simmons. "We met when I was a student and working in a Brighton club cloakroom whilst Michael Topping was performing in drag with Dave Lynn. I became their roadie, and then gradually part of the act." When Dave Lynn moved on, the boys ditched the drag, and Topping and Butch were born. They quickly developed their unique camp, saucy, cheeky, topical humour. "A big part of our show is the topical jokes," smiles Butch. "Why shouldn't gay men joke about politics? And it really is up to the minute. Often we are still writing until seconds before we go on stage." David Benson, Scott Capurro, Jason Wood and others will guest star over their Edinburgh Fringe run. And all at ScotsGay wish Michael Topping a very happy 61st birthday on 4th August! Although Tim Fountain (Assembly Rooms, 6th-30th August) has slept with five thousand men and one lesbian, the poor guy still hasn't found anyone he likes. However, he's hoping that the Edinburgh Fringe is going to change all that. In his new comedy, "Sex Addict", he will go online live each night and, with the audience's help and advice, find someone, anyone, to love. The next night he will report back on the success or failure of the previous evening's tryst. What will the Gaydar.com regulars make of this? Prejudice lurks everywhere, even in a vibrant, diverse environment like the Edinburgh Festival. Last year, on the Royal Mile, young members of Playground Productions were subjected to disturbing verbal homophobic abuse whilst promoting their play. They were told, repeatedly, that simply for being gay they would go to hell. Although shocked and saddened, the company were not dispirited. This year they return to the Fringe with The Laramie Project (Gilded Balloon Teviot, 6th - 30th August) - the powerful and painfully appropriate story about the distance still left to travel towards a truly tolerant society. Set in the tranquil, Mid-Western town of Laramie, Wyoming, USA, it tells the true story of an anti-gay murder in 1998 that forced a whole nation to question its values and confront the undercurrents of bigotry it had been quietly nurturing. "The Laramie Project" is a compelling snapshot of humanity, the depths of callousness to which it can sink, and the heights of compassion to which it can rise. At a time when many point the finger at the US for being advocates of violence and intolerance, Playground Productions shows us that real compassion exists at the heart of North America. Syracuse University Drama students are also performing a version of "The Laramie Project" at the Quaker Meeting House from 9th - 14th August. The International Festival of Lilliput (Venue 13, 6th-28th August) presents 3 plays from the critically acclaimed writer, actor and producer, Lesley Ross. "Madam Butterfly's Child" is a comedy about an extra in an opera - set to the familiar music of Giacomo Puccini. "The Manhattan Breast Company" is the bittersweet tale of a guy falling for a straight male friend. And "Mad Margaret's Revenge" is a high camp romp featuring a photograph Antonio Banderas. Do make sure you catch all three shows for what Lesley tells me is his Edinburgh Fringe swan song. The most anticipated musical show of 2004 is the stage return of the Transgender classic, Hedwig and the Angry Inch (1/4rm @ Greenside, 6th - 14th August). More like a concert than traditional music theatre, Hedwig is over 100 minutes of full-on music inspired by the likes of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Nirvana, Lou Reed and Sex Pistols. Born as Hansel in East Germany, a sex change operation allowed Hedwig to marry an American GI and get over the Berlin Wall to freedom. This is the story of what happened next... For the last few years at the Fringe, Tina C (Pod Deco, 4th-29th August) has been an exceptionally attractive, much thinner version of Michael Moore (in a dress). And much of what she has been saying and singing for years is now received wisdom. This year's "Tina C's Manifesto Show" aims to push the boundaries even further. Unquestionably the best drag act at the Fringe this year - she does what the very best drag acts do well, and then adds something extra. David Wickenden, David Roper, Ian Parkin and Stephen De Martin, collectively known as "Four Poofs and a Piano", are live on stage, with their show Never Mind the Botox (Pleasance Courtyard, 4th - 30th August). It will be good to see the gay boys from Friday Night with Jonathon Ross in a whole hour of their own. The gorgeous Craig Hill (Pod Deco, 6th - 29th August) climbs on top of another Edinburgh stage to what no doubt will be another round of sell out shows. This young man is, without resort to hyperbole or exaggeration, the campest person alive on planet earth. Makes Dale look like Arnie and Julian Clary look like Vinnie Jones. Craig Hill - "One Man and his Kilt" is a guaranteed big gay hoot. Say Sorry ('C' Chambers Street, 4th - 30th August) is the everyday story of man-on-man domestic abuse. Steven and Christian get together as a couple and all is well. After a while they end up living with Christian's flat mate, Colin. After a happy start, the relationship between the three descends into jealousy, threats and violence. Produced by Slice of Life Productions, who've been working with the Metropolitan Police Domestic Violence Initiatives, Alex Baker's brave "Say Sorry" sets out to prove that some gay men are victims of domestic violence too. Complete with gorgeous glam make up and lip stick, showman Gary Le Strange (Pod Deco, 4th - 29th August) had a terrific festival in 2003, winning the Perrier Best Newcomer, and being considered quite, quite brilliant by all who saw him, including me. If you really want to know what I'm talking about go to Tracy and Michelle's website http://homepage.ntlworld.com/kate.darby/ These girls are surely the best fans a guy can have. I raved about Andrew Clover's Birthday Party in 2002, in part because the audience participation element meant that I spent most of the show on stage and I thought a good review would prevent him picking on me again. This year the birthday party has a very limited run of just seven nights - but his new show, Andrew Clover's Storyman (Pleasance Courtyard, 4th - 29th August), promises to be just as glorious. Andrew is Maurice Clark, who improvises stories from the audience suggestions. In a quirky mix of stand-up, improv, and dark character comedy, Storyman looks like another big hit. When does attraction end and obsession begin? Sarah is a disillusioned singer waiting for Mr. Right. She meets Jon, the tall, dark, handsome city slicker, and believes that he's everything she ever dreamt of. Or is he playing a different game? Soap opera melodrama meets chart pop music in the fast-paced tragedy Dark Angels (Sweet on the Royal Mile, 13th - 25th August). From the consistently excellent Edinburgh Fringe veteran, Dan Hyde, whose previous work includes "Dangerous Games", "Beautiful Thing" and "The Importance of Being Earnest". Making their Edinburgh Fringe debut is US impro comedy outfit, Neutrino (Gilded Balloon Teviot, 6th - 30th August). Using audience-supplied objects as inspiration, the cast hit the streets around the theatre to film, edit, and score a completely improvised movie in real time. These scenes are then seamlessly run into the theatre for the audience to enjoy. Ambitious and precarious in its nature, Neutrino is set to be a white-knuckle edge-of-your-seat show with a definite parental guidance certification. This is Soap ('C' Central, 6th - 30th August) is performed by a hugely talented, and really rather gorgeous group of people who improvise sketches from situations given, in part, from previous day's audience. What keeps the format so fresh are the daily guest stars from other shows. I've said it before and I'll say it again, "This is Soap" is as camp as it comes and a great way to start any Fringe day. Shakespeare for Breakfast ('C' Central, 4th - 30th August) is another favourite from the 'C' Venues. Featuring the lost musicals of William Shakespeare and, get this, free coffee and croissants! Don't let the 10am start deter you. An early morning laugh a second guaranteed. Puppetry of the Penis (Pleasance Courtyard, 4th - 30th August) sells out every year and everybody already knows about it. It's a terrible shame that I annually get forced to go and see two naked guys play with their huge cocks. How do you review a show like that? (You don't. I'm seeing it this year. - Ed) Answers to the E-mail address below. Julian Fox - New Spaces for Role Models (Pleasance Courtyard, 5th - 30th August) is the travelogue from a gay comic with a difference. "I love Gatwick airport. It feels like home to me. Especially the North terminal." From the creator of the critically acclaimed "Rebranding Mr God" and "Goodbye Seattle Coffee Company". Paul Foot - Simple Pleasures (Pleasance Courtyard, 5th - 30th August) is a celebration of life's little things. Sort of. Not to be confused with the late left wing journalist of the same name. Paul focuses on the fundamental things in life that bring him joy and upset, presenting the evidence in the inimitably surreal, shambolic manner that defines his unique style of comedy. Nudge (Pod Deco, 4th - 29th August) is the story of two lonely boys, Matt and Lamont, who live together in a small flat. They attempt to write comedy material based on their life. Trouble is their life consists of toast, ninja movies and... writing comedy material. Matt thinks that their lack of a real break is because Freemasons control the entire comedy industry. Then the barking old beauty next door, played by the brilliant Charlie Chuck, unwittingly changes their comedy lives. And so to the play that the Daily Record, Telegraph, Mail et al are getting so het up about... XXX (The Pleasance Grand at Pleasance Courtyard, 4th - 14th August, matinees 7th and 13th August). It's an adaptation of "Philosophy in the Boudoir" by Marquis de Sade. Allegedly, the most sexually explicit play ever to be staged in British Theatre, XXX provoked press outrage during its run at the Riverside Studios in London in April/May last year. An investigation from Scotland Yard followed as obscenity law campaigners protested outside the theatre as a result of its onstage portrayal of sex. Tut tut. Jason Wood: Being Glorious! (Assembly Rooms, 6th - 30th August) - as Jason Wood always is. Now a firm Fringe favorite and a TV star, he's back for another round of top-notch mimicry. Hand on heart, this reviewer has never heard singers impersonated better. All the divas are here, plus some modern male voices. This show comes with a 'Don't sit in the front row' warning however. Listen out for the Topping and Butch penned reworking of the Pet Shop Boys classic, West End Girls. Mark Thomas (The Bongo Club, 8th - 18th) brings his vast experience to the Bongo Club stage this year. Although first and foremost a comedian, it is his brand of direct action politics that have earned him most notoriety. Mark's audiences always leave the venue with an urgent desire to get off their arses and change the world outside. Fresh from Glastonbury are young poets Aisle16 (Pleasance Dome, 4th - 30th August). Written by and starring Chris Hicks, Ross Sutherland, Luke Wright and Tom Sutton, they have subverted popular modern poetry into a Powerpoint presentation. These guys have a lot to say and they say it well. Modern beat poetry at its very best. I see the Edinburgh University Theatre Company's Improverts (Bedlam Theatre, 5th - 6th August, and 16th and 28th August) every year and it is always quite brilliant. Based at the Bedlam Theatre at Bristo Place, this improvised comedy show also benefits from a venue with a cafe so cool it could be Edinburgh's best-kept secret. PS. There is always at least one cute gay guy in the cast. Shout out if you can guess which one it is. At the same venue is Loot (Bedlam Theatre, 7th August, and 9th and 14th August), Joe Orton's classic black comedy of tragic and grotesque proportions. So if you fancy some late night challenging theatre - this is the play for you. On the shortest of runs, it's also got a bargain admission price of just a fiver. Kit and the Widow: Twenty Years Man and Boy (Stage by Stage Edinburgh Academy, 11th - 29th August) is a pair of old favourites being themselves in one of the UK's best musical double acts. See http://www. kitandthewidow.com/for more. For 'great' tunes, dad-dancing, and gruesome beheadings - check out the Underbelly's Ubu Disco (Underbelly, 5th - 29th August). Adapted from Alfred Jarry's absurdist classic tale, this comic double act use kitchen utensils, the gift of song and whatever they can find behind the bar, including the guests, to re-enact DJ Pa Ubu's glorious days as the king of Poland. "Who needs the juggernaut of war when things can be settled through the wheels of steel?" Sounds like a lot of fun. The Canal Cafe Theatre's satirical classic Newsrevue ('C' Chambers Street, 4th - 30th August) is back again for their 25th Anniversary Edition. The performers are always top notch and the original music kicks ass - hopefully there won't be any anti-gay jokes around this year. Ahem. Legend has it that Ben Elton once failed a Newsrevue cast audition on account of his inability to sing and dance. Good. Reginald D. Hunter (Pleasance Courtyard, 4th - 30th August) is a class act of a stand-up. A big favourite at the Edinburgh Fringe, the Glasgow Comedy Festival, Madame Jo Jo's in London and across the international comedy circuit. His critique on Political Correctness is original and inspired. For me, one of the funniest people performing in the world today. Fresh from their Radio 4 series, and before embarking upon their newly commissioned second season, The Bearded Ladies (Underbelly, 5th - 29th August) are bringing their sketch show to the Underbelly. If you are not familiar with Radio 4's coveted 6.30pm daily comedy slot then you may not of heard these four funny women perform. They are more than worth your immediate attention. Featuring Bruce Devlin, Steven Dick and Teddy, Cerberus: The Ultimate Triple Header (Cowgate Central @ Wilkie House, 7th - 30th August) is the definitive 'Don't sit in the front row' brand of comedy. It's the price you pay for seeing three outrageous Scottish Comedians at their best. Ever seen a ghost? David Benson (Assembly Rooms, 6th - 30th August) brings classic tales from the grave to life and hears of real spooky encounters. This is a very different show from the rather nice chap who brought us Frankie Howard and Kenneth Williams. The Crimson Corset ('C' Central, 6th - 30th August) is a look at Edwardian society's attitude towards women, sex and suffrage, and the concepts of romanticism versus repression. It promises to be a Fringe 2004 highlight for those looking for intelligent, well-written drama. Sisters, Such Devoted Sisters (The Traverse, 5th - 28th August), stars Russell Barr in a frock. It combines a sickening crime story from Glasgow's gay 'underworld' (I do wish someone would tell me where in Glasgow this so called 'underworld' is) with a touching comic narrative about a young man blowing up pigeons and shoplifting. Featuring self-combusting grannies and Jack Russells driving cars on Scottish Islands. The Traverse has a reputation for excellent and innovative drama - Sisters will be no exception. Seventy five thousand Jews were deported to death camps from Vichy, during the German occupation of France. Minorities, including gays, were picked off the streets to have their noses measured and their genitals examined. Today, racial profiling is a matter of course in 'The War on Terror'. Arthur Miller's Incident at Vichy (Underbelly, 22nd - 29th August) is a timely reminder of the horrors of such iniquities on whomever they are perpetrated. Top Irish actor, Marcus Seoighe stars in the new, sacrilegious comedy play, Actress, Bachelor, Clergyman, Cheat (Sweet on the Royal Mile, 6th - 29th August). Directed by international and West End director, Amy Bonsall, whose productions include "Top Girl"s, "Oh What a Lovely War", "The Importance of Being Earnest" and "Heaven & Earth", this show has some top talent behind it and should be a real treat. With his Fringe First winning show, Bob Kingdom's Truman Capote (Assembly Rooms, 6th - 30th August) returns to Edinburgh on the 20th anniversary of Capote's death. Capturing the man and his times, despite the Capote estate forbidding any direct quotation, is no easy task. But by all accounts it's a very rewarding performance. After five years starring in Oz TV soap Neighbours, Jonathon Dutton is to make his Edinburgh Festival debut in the European premiere of the award-winning Men (Pleasance Queen Dome, 4th - 29th August). The play looks at the roller coaster life of three sexy, young dysfunctional lads. Sounds promising. Venus, Mars and Chocolate Cake ('C' Central, 6th - 30th August) has free chocolate cake in it, almost guaranteeing a five star review from this critic. Secondly, (so I'm told by a woman who knows these things) it features the quite brilliant cabaret singers Airlie Scott and Emma Finlay. Thirdly, it's at 'C' Venues, which have come up with the most diverse programming for the Edinburgh Fringe yet again. Layne Page gives us An Evening With Beatrice Lillie ('C' Central, 15th - 30th August), the women who many regard as the inventor of camp. A legend in her lifetime, she was the inspiration for both Mary Poppins and Auntie Mame. She worked with musical and literary greats including No‘l Coward, Cole Porter, Sir George Bernard Shaw, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Ivor Novello and Moss Hart. She also married a Lord. First a warning about Cutting the Fringe (Sweet on the Royal Mile, 22nd - 27th August) - this acappella show contains unnecessary intrusion of personal space by camp young men. They are very easily encouraged and it is recommended that you refrain from doing so. Bearing that in mind, Cutting the Fringe offers a unique collection of fab male acappella music. So to the J-Boys - Gay Revue (The Garage, 8th - 30th August) and the fellas from Tokyo who remove their clothes. They do it year after year in Edinburgh during the Fringe. And they do it well. The critically acclaimed Karaoke Show (Gilded Balloon Teviot, 6th - 30th August) has been performing to sell out audiences for the last two years in New York. No less than fifteen top-class international performers use a script loosely based on Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors as a launch pad for a very different evening. Experience the fun of the show, then stay to rock the mic, cheer the Karaoke Idol contestants then groove on the dance floor to the cream of Scottish DJs until 5 am. Publife (Club Ego, 17th - 29th August) is an exhilarating piece of physical dance theatre about life in a, well... a pub. The evening reveals five people caught up in their regular quest for fun, alcohol and social interaction. The action is performed in front of, behind, and around the audience. You'll be joining in. Finally, and worth much more than the mention I've got room for here is Channel 4's stand-up competition, So You Think You're Funny? (Gilded Balloon Teviot, various dates) It features, amongst others, some really hot up and coming gay comedians - catch the sparkling camp wit of Andrew Doyle on the 9th August if you can. Other contestants well worth seeing over the seven heats are Rosie Wilbyon the 17th, and the brilliant transexual comic Debra Jane Appelby on the 8th. Past finalists and winners of the competition include Peter Kay, Dylan Moran and Rhona Cameron. Bill Bailey hosts the Final on the 26th August. That's it from me for now. I recommend that you also take a look at John Park's reviews at http://fringereport.com/for a reliable up to the minute take on the world's biggest arts festival. And for some of the most entertaining writing around, check out Tony Challis reviewing the Fringe in the Lesbian and Gay Humanist magazine. Well toodle-pip and don't forget to say 'Hi' if you see me oot and aboot. Vodka is good. Martin Walker xxx E-mail: mgwuk@hotmail.com Thanks to Phil, Susan, Jessica, Andrew, Graham, Amanda, Harper, Ash, Stephen and Kate. Martin Powell selects his pick: Readers with a good memory will remember that last year I was crowing about picking 4 shows the previous year that went on to win Fringe Firsts. So how many did I get last year? Three. Why the lower number? Well for some unknown reason I forgot to include The Riot Group's Pugilist Specialist. Given that this won every award, the Company then had a 4 month UK tour (extended to 6), are about to tour the USA, and are then heading off for Australia this was a big mistake. Anyway, they seem to have forgiven me and I'm told they may well be back with something different next year. They will be working with another company and doing a play about the impact of telephones going from manual to automatic exchanges. And before the Editor has a year long orgasm at the thought of a play about phones I should add that I expect it to concentrate on the effects on people rather than the technology. So what about this year? As usual Martin Walker will be concentrating on shows with a specific gay angle and on comedy and I'll try - and fail - to cover everything else. I will however mention a few comedy shows. Count Arthur Strong (Steve Delaney) is back with Through it All I've Always Laughed (Pod Deco). You either love or hate the Count with his bumbling alcoholic character claiming to run a drama school. I love him. Another performer with an alter ego is Rich Hall, his Otis Lee Crenshaw is back with Bourbonitis (Pleasance Courtyard). The only performer in Edinburgh that I know has an MBA degree is Peter Buckley Hill and it shows. He realised long ago that the economics of Edinburgh mean that you lose less money if you don't charge for tickets. What happens is that he can usually do a deal to bring drinkers into a venue that would not otherwise be a Fringe venue and the venue give him the space. He's got two shows PBH and Some Comedians - a cheap way of seeing Peter and 4 other comedians - and his own show PBH's Not Quite Legendary Free One Man Show (both at Laughing Horse). Turning to dance there's a lot that could be good. For a couple of years now Aurora Nova at St Stephens has brought over dance companies we've never heard of from other parts of Europe and wowed audiences. This year from Poland they have Song of the Goat Theatre with Chronicles, Derevo - Tanya Khabarova have Reflection, from Czech Republic and Russia Teatr Novogo Fronta have Dias de Las Noches, set in 1974 in Buenos Aries with a coup looming outside, what happens in a music hall. From Norway Zero Visibility Corp have It's Only a Rehearsal. As usual Shakti is back at The Garage with two shows The Shaman (the Winds of Bon), Bon is the season in Japan when the spirits of the dead rise and return to the land of the living, and 1001 Nights, an endless story of love and magic. Dance Base have Ripe, a stunning selection of dancers with a wealth of life and dance experience. The same venue also has Scottish Dance Theatre. Definitely not to be missed. Listed under dance but I suspect not is the American Pig Iron in Flop (Pleasance Courtyard). I've not seen them before but I've heard good reports. Turning to theatre there seems to be even more Shakespeare than usual. As always C has the ever popular Shakespeare for Breakfast. It is joined by Crossfire's Shakespeare Lost & Found (Diverse Attractions), American High School Theatre have Shakespeare Made Easy (Church Hill Theatre), Cabbages and Things have Shakespeare Revue (Sweet on the Royal Mile), and Article 19 have Shakespeare Asleep (Augustine's). Quite how much of the bard these contain is anybody's guess. Similarly I'm not sure what to make of Top Edge Productions Hamlet (Venue 45), a one man show, or Westberg's Hamlet - A Stand Up (Gilded Balloon Caves), one man 20 characters, or Gresham's Hamlet - The Pantomime (The Garage). Active Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet in Pieces (C too) claims to do the lot in 75 minutes. Moving on, Angela Barlow's After Chekhov (C Central) may be worth a look. One woman show about Chekhov's wife and her unusual marriage. Rather different I suspect from The Oxford Playhouse's Amajuba - Like Doves we Rise (Wigwam), intimate portrayal of childhood in apartheid South Africa. Producktions have Ash Wendesday: Stop Drinking (Roman Eagle Lodge). I just liked the title. An absolute must see is The Red Chair Players' Bang Bang You're Dead (C), 1999 sixteen students gunned down in Columbine. Their award winning The Laramie Project in 2002 was superb. Double Edge Drama have The Boss (Rocket), Mick and Denny share their time plotting to kill the boss and gradually killing themselves. The huge open air spectaculars are usually great. Boilerhouse have The Bridge (Old College Quad), a mix of aerial choreography, music, and film. If it's history you are after, try Telling Tales' Catastrophe at Culloden (C cubed), described as "the original Scottish road movie" or for theatre history try Gielgud - A Knight in the Theatre (Cafe Royal). Rather different from Rosa's Curry Tales (Traverse 4) which is staged upstairs in The Raj. If you think that's unusual try A Mobile Thriller (Traverse 5). This is performed in a car travelling round Edinburgh. Getting a ticket could be difficult as there is only space for 3 passengers. Tickets may or may not be easier to get for the Traverse Theatre Company's two world premieres. Shimmer by Linda McLean is about what happens when bad weather throws together 6 people at a B & B by Loch Lomond. When the Bulbul Stopped Singing by Raja Shehadeh and adapted by the superb David Greig. Shehadeh is a Palestinian lawyer and this is his story of what happened when the Israeli Army invaded Ramallah. Still in that part of the world The Traverse also has Jonathan Lichtenstien's The Pull of Negative Gravity, wounded in the war in Iraq, a farmer's boy turned soldier returns home with injuries that have extraordinary consequences. Quite what The Dubya Trilogy (Wigwam) is I'm not sure. Three linked shows: The Madness of George Dubya, A Weapons Inspector Calls, and Guantanamo Baywatch. It could be good. Theatre Cryptic have an unusual one. Each...and Every Inch (Gateway), a multi-media journey through visual and sound installations, 3D video, and a live cello duet. The show lasts an hour, people are let in at 10 minute intervals and the whole show runs for 4 hours continuously. The Edinburgh Literary Pub Tour (Beehive) on the other hand looks like a good excuse to do some drinking. New Arts Theatre Co have a play called Forbidden (C) two women in love in Nazi Germany. Theatre of the Insane have another play called Forbidden (Holyrood Tavern), a blasphemous mix of race religion sex and politics. E.V.A have Hitler Sells Tickets (Assembly Rooms), we shall see. Another famous name title is Killing Paul McCartney (Assembly Rooms), Royal Court writer Nick Grosso's demented new creation Tommy Kay. While on this theme The Walrus Group have And in the End (C) the death and life of John Lennon. Hunting Diana (Gilded Balloon Teviot) is by Henry Naylor who last year had the excellent Finding Bin Laden. Sometimes the old ones are the best. Wilde Productions have The Importance of Being Earnest (Fettes College). I was rather surprised to see The Kosh listed under theatre rather than dance, which is how I'd class Twentieth Century Girls. Perhaps I'll see it for the third time. It is very good. Argentinean based La Compania have The Key (Garage). This follows the adventures of a man who receives an inheritance of unimaginal treasure but to get it he has to travel to Latin America. Michael Lunt's The Last Ballade (Hill St Theatre) has him playing, in both senses, Frederick Chopin. Whether Debut Theatre are able to do 1984 (C) in an hour we shall see. I've more confidence in Animal Farm (Bongo Club) performed by Guy Masterson. He is also directing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Assembly Rooms). People Show are back with show 115, Play Dead (Pod Deco), featuring "music, action and a cast of thousands". I'll finish with three new plays I think we can be sure will be good. SCAMP have Jonathan Harvey's Taking Charlie (Assembly Rooms), a new play with songs. Pip Utton has Son of the Father (Pleasance Courtyard), Joseph and Mary's son Jesus is crucified. Joseph confronts Mary on the morning of the resurrection. The ever brilliant Trestle have The Smallest Person (Pod Deco), freak shows, fairies, and medical science. I hope most of these are good. However about the only thing I can be absolutely certain of in Edinburgh is that I will offer myself for election to the Fringe Board, and at the AGM (Apex International) I will discover that once again I've failed to be elected. Martin Powell E-mail: martinp@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- BEHIND THE SCENES ================= Edinburgh is bursting with gay people every year at the Fringe. Even those shows that have no obvious gay content invariably have some queer designing the sets, writing the music or working the lights. So ScotsGay submitted 20 questions to Nic Watson, (aka Tech Nic), widely regarded as one of the very best live comedy technicians in the business. Name/Age/Where are you from? Nic Watson, 24, from London. What is your role/job during Fringe 2004? I am many things to many men. I think Technical Stage Manager covers it. Or Technical Director. Or simply 'TechNic'. How many years have you been coming to Edinburgh? This is my fourth. How did it all start? In 2001 I went up as part of the three-strong tech team on Ubersauage's "UberArmy" and was Technical Director of HMS Comedy's "Evolution" The funniest person alive? Cleese. Clearly The worst person you have ever worked with? May day job involves student drama, so there are many cases there. I've also known some awful stand-ups. Generally nice people, but just rubbish. I do remember a director called Kim Bailey... What happened when it all went wrong? He wasn't nasty. Just a pillock. He missed the first night of his show because he got caught on a burning train! The cast and I changed everything in his absence and broke his ugly, flimsy set so it couldn't be put back. Favourite Edinburgh Fringe Venue? Technically, I think the C Venues have some of best designed spaces. But I'm at the new Pod Deco this year and it looks like that's going to be topping my list. Come and hunt me down in their bars. The most you have ever paid for a pint of beer? Being a vodka drinker, carrying a small hip flask can make the whole experience considerably cheaper! Just how many gay people are there at the Edinburgh Fringe? Enough to go round! The must see act/show that you're not connected with? Robin Ince is my favourite stand-up. His brain is pure comedy. I'll also be making sure I see Count Arthur Strong - a man who makes me laugh so long and hard, that I hurt by the end of his shows. Which reviewer really gets your goat? Any that slates a show for just for the sake of it. Mainly the students. Salt and Sauce? Got any ketchup? Best back stage gossip? UberArmy opened the show with a video sequence of the four boys in small gold pants. When we were filming it, I caught one of them 'warming himself up' so that he looked good on film. OK, second best back stage gossip? I had a 'close encounter' with a reviewer backstage after a show one night. It was like shagging in the world's smallest fancy dress shop! The Edinburgh gay scene. Discus. It seems that the whole city goes a little bit bendy at Festival time. I'm not really into the scene that much but I've always had a good time down at ??????? (What's that place called?) Who would you really, really love to work with? Chris Langham is a hero of mine. He is Roy Mallard in People Like Us, was in Not The Nine O'Clock News and wrote for The Muppets. Is it all just too commercial? Definitely. It's about time the big venues remembered that they are there for the acts, not the other way around. Name your Unsung Hero. Peter Buckley-Hill is a comedy legend who has been doing free shows at the Fringe for donkey's years now. They're free on the basis that "everyone makes a loss - I just get a head start"! Go see him. Proper Spirit Of The Fringe. Oh go on then, plug your shows. Our company, UnderHand Productions, is bringing up Nudge (15:40 @ Pod Deco), The StickMen (17:05 @ Pod Deco) and Comedy aOh-Oh (00:00 @ CO2). I'm also working with Miles Jupp's Lost and Lonely Rebels (21:00 @ Assembly Rooms) and have been helping with Laurence & Gus - Men In Love (16.30@ Pleasance) --------------------------------------------------------------- EDINBURGH BOOK FESTIVAL PREVIEW =============================== The Edinburgh International Book Festival is the largest festival of its kind in the world, and with over 600 different events, has something to offer everyone. Since a lot of folk reading this are probably going to be visitors, I thought I would give you a run down of what is what and you can all make up your own minds! Firstly, though, I can reveal that the rumours are true: Pop Rokit has been sold and has gone to Trendy Wendy, her lovely partner Annie and Lou Lou Bella from Planet Out. The pub will open from 8th Aug-5th Sep for the Festivals and then close for a major refurbishment. I suppose I'd better start with one of the focal points of Edinburgh's gay scene: CC Blooms. Love it or hate it, CC's (named after the character in Beaches) remains jam packed 7 days a week. OK slight exaggeration - maybe not seven days a week but certainly at the weekends the two floors are rammed. Sun and Thu are karaoke evenings with the disco open downstairs too. Mon is Carry On The Party after The Famous Pink Pound at Planet Out just down the road. CC's plays all the latest dance music and occasionally throughout the week some of the camp classics. Try and head there before Midnight though if you are impatient and don't like queuing at weekends! CC's is Free and open seven days a week but doesn't really get that busy until around 11pm. Just up the road is Edinburgh's premier bar Habana which is open 7 days a week from Noon. Best nights to go for the special offers are Mon-Wed for GBP1 a drink on selected spirits and beers, although other promos run throughout the week also. Resident DJ is on Thu, Fri Sat and Sun and the Pre Club Luvely also takes place in Habs. Habana is known for its no attitude, mixed clientele and friendly bar staff. It is also the norm for Habs to have an extended licence during the festival but I haven't had that confirmed yet so keep your eyes peeled! Just down the road is Planet Out. For the time being and don't be surprised if this changes pretty sharpish: Pink Pound is on a Mon night with DJ Trendy Wendy when all drinks are GBP1.09 with a GBP1 door charge, all the camp classics are played - past present and future. Other highlights in the Pout weekly calendar: Thu has resident DJs John Pleased and Morgan (also known as the Visitor and Kaupuss for those of you who frequent Taste and Fever), Fri is camped up with DJ Fi whilst Sat sees DJ Karen on the Decks. Pre Club Parties for, Fever, Joy, Wiggle, Vibe and Blaze also happen in Planet: ask staff for discount passes. The Claremont Bar seems to be becoming very cruisy indeed. And for all you bears out there, the first Sat of every month is a Bearscots and bear lovers evening... On your way along to the Claremont, why not check out the Townhouse Sauna in East Claremont Street? The Townhouse has just finished the last phase of its major refurbishment and is on 4 floors with a bar, cafe, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, video rooms and private rooms. Check out the Loyalty Card Scheme they have going with Habana. Now in its eleventh year, The Newtown Bar is popular mostly with the boyz and probably folk in their 20's upwards (girls are welcome too though!). Drink promos run daily, but do change every now and then so, if you get a chance, check out the web for info on all the new offers etc. This comfortable and more traditional bar is busy throughout the whole week. On Fri and Sat, resident DJs Polysuper Pete and Ali (plus guests) provide all the tunes downstairs in what was 'Kaleidoscope' bar which is open until 2am. The Newtown is situated - surprise surprise - in the New Town tucked away in Dublin Street a couple of hundred yards along from the Blue Moon in Albany Street and just past Q-Store and Steamworks Sauna. WWW: http://www.thenewtownbar.co.uk/ Just along the road in Howe Street is The Laughing Duck which has launched a new menu for the festival and drink/cocktail promos to run throughout the week. The Duck opens from Noon until about Midnight 7 days a week. There is also a space downstairs for hire and a DJ on a Saturday night. (Food is served until 7pm). WWW: http://www. thelaughingduck.co.uk/ And last but not least for this issue is Frenchies located in Rose St Lane - a wee bit out of the way but, hey ho, worth the trip for the atmosphere alone. Frenchies is open Mon-Sat 1pm-1am and Sun 2pm-1am. Happy Hour is 6-8pm every day. I'll mention anywhere I've missed in the next issue which will be out at the end of Week 2 of the Fringe. Hope you all enjoy the Festivals! Alan E-mail: weealan@drink.demon.co.uk Stop Press: The Annual Mingin' Ahoy Cruise is set for Sun 22nd Aug when Brian Dempster and Alan Joy will supply the loud popular noise. Cost of the trip is GBP15 which includes the coach journeys to and from South Queensferry, the boat trip itself and then free entry to the Mingin' Festival Party at The Venue. The boat is not very big so there will only be around 150 tickets available from The Regent and from the front door at the next Mingin' (Sat 7th Aug). The Mingin' Festival Party will be held on all three floors of The Venue on Sun 22nd Aug and will run from 11pm-5am with a host of DJs including Alan Joy and Brian Dempster. Entry: GBP5. Pic Caption: Alan and Lisa recently took a break from serving Real Ale at The Regent (due to celebrate its 1st Birthday on August 11th) to brew some at the Goth in Prestonpans. Here they are with Fowler's Head Brewer Iain Turnbull. --------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTTISH MEDIA MONITOR ====================== Garry Otton Checks in to a B&B What happened to the good old days when men and boys, or even other men, shared beds to keep warm? Nowadays, two men asking to share a double room ruffle the sheets of the Scottish press. The country has been gripped by the story of Tom Forrest, owner of Cromasaig, a small guesthouse in Wester Ross and his wild, sexual imaginings. Imaginings that never for one moment lingered on the possibility Stephen Nock might simply prefer not to sleep alone. Imaginings fed by e-mails of support, including another guesthouse owner who shared a story of unmentionable practices and soiled sheets. Had every 'straight' guest in every guesthouse left cotton sheets clean, starched, folded and tucked with lavender-scented pomanders, it would be easy to deduce that only gay men could be so clartie. But they don't. Before the storm broke, I received e-mail from the "gay pair" - as Aberdeen's Press & Journal called them - Stephen Nock and his partner Jean Paul Martinon asking if I could warn other gay people of this B&B in Kinlochewe. Stephen had been trying to find suitable accommodation for their walking holiday in Scotland. A sturdy headboard that wouldn't dent the anaglypta when the bed rocked probably featured fairly low down in their list of priorities. A cagey response from landlord, Tom and his wife Liz Forrest forced Stephen Nock to ask if sharing with his male partner might be a problem. Forrest wrote: "We do not have a problem with your personal sexual deviation, that is up to you. You are welcome to our twin room if you wish but will not condone your perversion". Forrest also e-mailed me to explain: "I have a number of true friends who are in their words 'poofs', they respect my ways and I respect theirs". So, where were they now, Mr Forrest? He wrote to Stephen Nock: "I just do not approve of unnatural acts being performed in my home. I am relieved that you have decided against staying in our wonderful normally tolerant establishment, it is apparent that you are incredibly arrogant and would not fit in anyway". Thanks to Pablo Ganguli who had been in contact with Stephen Nock, a campaigns officer for Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO), Ganguli contacted members of the press in an effort to interest them in this story which later appeared in Scottish editions of The Observer in a story penned by Lorna Martin. Tom Forrest insisted no one would dictate to him who could or could not stay in his guesthouse. And while our religious Home Secretary, David Blunkett busied himself preparing to have another go at introducing a new law protecting religionists from incitement to hatred, church-goer, Tom Forrest used The Observer as a platform to air his views on gays: "At the end of the day, a poof is a poof and I will not have that kind of sexual deviant staying in a double bed in my house. Nobody - not the tourist board, or tourist police as they should be called, or the trash who have been bombarding me with emails all week - will tell me who I can or can't let into my house". As for Stephen's work with the VSO, Forrest pouted: "I used to contribute to VSO for years. But I've stopped because they're out there fighting against AIDS in the world and it's mainly his sort of creature who's spreading it around". His website now permits only heterosexual singles or couples to occupy a double room. Visitscotland removed Cromasaig from its website and their quality assurance scheme. Forrest remained resolute, telling them that they could "go straight to Hell", (The Herald) and growled that they were "a disgrace to Scotland by not upholding moral values", adding in Scotland on Sunday: "Half the people who work for visitscotland are poofs anyway". The media just laughed it off. Hugo Rifkind confessed in The Herald: "My first reaction... was to laugh. One couldn't not, really. It was like an episode of The Office". He wasn't sure "if Forrest actually intended to cause offence". (Er... Hello? Anyone home)? Elsewhere, Forrest was likened to the English eccentric of the comedy series Fawlty Towers, Basil Fawlty. The Daily Mail tried to explain; "why Basil Fawlty would be proud of Britain's hoteliers from hell". In The Herald, Jennifer Cunningham thought Monarch of the Glen had merged with Fawlty Towers and national editions of The Sunday Times printed a feature with a picture of John Cleese as Basil Fawlty in a kilt and sporran. But their light-hearted channel hopping soon gave way to homophobia. Raymond Travers, writing in Scotland on Sunday, cheered the old soldier on: "I half-expected to find him holed up in his Cromasaig guesthouse, unavailable for comment and brandishing a pair of snarling Dobermans or cocked blunderbuss. I needn't have worried, because Forrest ('call me Tom') cut such a jovial and outgoing figure that I briefly wondered if I had buttonholed the wrong man". Travers dismissed the e-mails 'Tom' showed off to visiting journalists as "messages full of smut, empathy, sarcasm and heaps of self-righteous drivel". Selina Scott in The Sunday Mail also rushed to Tom Forrest's defence and begged: "...Was the treatment Mr Forrest meted out to London-based homosexual Stephen Nock and his partner really 'appalling' as visitscotland declared?" Well, yes, Ms Scott, it was! Stephen and his partner had yet to pack their bags and cross the Watford Gap let alone make it across the Scottish border! Selina Scott had it all wrapped up in the fish-supper poke she works for, insisting: "What it boils down to is whether you regard B&Bs as businesses or homes which also accept paying guests. Mr Forrest obviously regards his, first and foremost, as his home. Presumably he pays visitscotland to advertise it as a guesthouse. The taxpayer is not being asked to condone his views on sexual tolerance. So it's hard to argue with logic that it's up to him who he allows into his house. After all, pub landlords can decide who they let into their premises". The Sunday Times Scotland's supplement, Ecosse, a sad, thin, limp refuge for the most morally conservative of Scotland's columnists, including Mrs (Katie) Grant, Tom 'Brigadier' Brown and John 'gays-are-simply-not-equipped-to-live' Macleod, got the latter to share his only experience of being a landlady, picking up a couple of dykes off the ferry at Harris. "I invited them home to my big house - the only time I have ever indulged in the bed-and-breakfast trade - and was taken aback when they asked to share a big double room. They were 'colleagues', they insisted. Well, I cannot see into people's souls and I sensed danger in jumping to the most prurient conclusions and issuing a damning decree. Besides, the ladies might even think I wanted them separate the better to take advantage of them. So I let it lie". (No, honey. I'm sure they know a closet queen when they see one!) But let's face it, the Torridon Mountains are no place to go down on your boyf! Where it's so cold your balls disappear and cocks shrivel up until you feel like you're sucking on a Fox's Glacier Mint! (I should know, having performed this on the top of one of Jura's paps)! But I digress... Macleod was quick to remind his readers that the majority of folk in the northwest Highlands disapproved of "homosexual behaviour", before dismissing all this as "regrettable, but... scarcely 'appalling'. My sympathies for Nock and his friend are also limited," he wrote, "it is one thing to have a door slammed in your face - or to be turned out on the street in a thick, wet, midge-laden Highland night - but it is quite another when a guest house refuses simply to take a booking". Simply to take a booking? I had to remind myself of that when I re-read the insulting, foul-mouthed e-mails Tom Forrest had sent to Stephen Nock, most of which never made our 'family' newspapers. Hugo Rifkind in The Herald gently patted the "positive message" Forrest was supposed to be sending out. He wrote: "There's homophobia here, but it's the Diet Coke of homophobia. It's the homophobia that whispers and twitches curtains, rather than that which hides in the alleyways around gay clubs, waiting with steel-toe capped boots". Yes, like the 'Diet Coke' homophobia you see scrawled up in places like Queen's Park in Glasgow where less than 10 years ago, a young man was brutally beaten to death by queerbashers. Rifkind found refuge in nice, 'normal' gay people that don't frighten the horses, swing from leather slings, sniff poppers or strut their stuff in high-heels and big wigs. He explained how a gay friend of his had preferred shopping in IKEA to Gay Pride and welcomed the fact he liked "the same stuff that everybody else is interested in." Now wasn't that lovely! "Not a go-go dancer or a thong in sight", he sighed. I'm not sure what Mr Rifkind was trying to say here. Perhaps if Stephen and his partner had pretended to be 'normal', Tom Forrest would have nothing to disturb him but the sound of single beds pulled across the Homebase parquet flooring after lights out. The Herald reported: "Forrest claims he has been set up, pointing to an e-mail received at 7.39pm on May 31 from Garry Otton at Scottish Media Monitor. It reads: 'I was shocked when I read the experiences of a young gay couple travelling in the Highlands. And that in this day and age we are still seeing such outdated values! Kick yourself into the 21st century'." Why, thank you! Normally I'd not have a hope in Hell of getting a letter like that in The Herald. Forrest squealed to The Scottish Daily Mail: "I have been stitched up by the gay couple with the help of their poof friends". According to The Herald's Jennifer Cunningham: "That led to another exchange of increasingly rude e-mails on both sides. But Forrest's point is that Otton could only have known about the spat at that point if someone had passed on the correspondence". Rude? I'll show you rude! Stephen Nock wanted to warn other lesbians, gays and bisexuals of his experience. And why not? The Scottish Media Monitor doesn't do sweeping under the carpet and I was pleased to help in any way I could, if only to register my shock at the Forrest's behaviour in two e-mails to them. In response to one of them, Tom Forrest wrote: "I too was shocked when I received a request from two males who wished to share a double room. We heterosexuals, a more natural breed, also have rights this extending to whom we allow to share a double bed in our home. Your friends incidentally were offered a twin and more appropriate room, two single beds. Pray tell me when one refers to 'gay', do you mean happy?" My reply, in our "increasingly rude" exchange, was to enlighten him on the issue of 'natural' sex. "I'm sure you must be aware that most members of the animal kingdom participate in homosexuality without half the fuss you're making about it. This issue," I reminded him, "was not your homophobia but your insults and rude response". And on that old chestnut about gays hijacking words, be it gay, pansy, fruit or Chutney Ferret, "our language is a living one. Perhaps you'd prefer 'Uranian'..." Oh, and I told him he should get out more! But that was it. His talk of strange brown packages filled with porn and abusive e-mails probably amounted to an outraged queen from Rotherham and a copy of ScotsGay! He'll have to be a lot tougher skinned if he wants to stand as an MSP! Amongst other "trash" Tom Forrest was subjected to, Rob Harkavy of gay holiday company Respect Holidays appeared on Channel Four News to tell the programme such opinions were "Jurassic" and called for a change in the law to protect gays from discrimination. I sensed chinks of light across durable nylon-cord carpets everywhere when James Chalmers, lecturer in law at Aberdeen University, explained to The Herald that the law already prevents people who run hotels or B&Bs from refusing accommodation to people for capricious reasons. He cited a precedent in 1949 when a West Indian cricketer won a case after being turned away from a hotel. A spokeswoman for visitscotland wanted to make it clear that the majority of Scottish people didn't share Mr Forrest's views. Michelle Nelson from visitscotland reassured me: "As a company we do not condone prejudiced behaviour towards individual customers and we are happy to conduct business with anyone regardless of their sexual orientation or origin and take a very dim view of any provider who takes this stance towards our customers". I'm quite sure they reached that sensible conclusion by themselves, and not, in the words of Dawn Thompson in The Scottish Daily Mail, because of "a furious gay backlash". The Scottish Daily Mail did their bit to create a furious 'straight' backlash by taking the unusual step of adding to the report: "Was Tom Forrest wrong to turn away the gay couple from his guest house? Write to: Scottish Daily Mail, 200 Renfield Street, Glasgow G2 3PZ. Or e-mail: dm.scotland@daily-mail.co.uk". James Beech of Errol, Perthshire used the opportunity to nod sagely in the direction of Stephen Nock: "He'll soon realise that Tom Forrest's feelings are shared by the great majority. We're appalled at the way in which homosexuals have got themselves to be accepted. Just a few short years ago, the homosexual act was illegal". He was right, of course. Homosexuality was illegal in Scotland until 1980! Susan Flockhart nodded sceptically in The Sunday Herald: "Perhaps visitscotland has access to statistics that back up this flattering statement about the attitudes of the 'Scottish people'. But if their spokesman genuinely believes Scotland is a haven of open-minded liberalism, then frankly, he is living in cloud cuckoo land". And true to form, spouting the sort of nonsense that the Scottish Tories are desperate to distance themselves from because it looses them elections, homophobic Phil Gallie advised The Press & Journal that "while well outside of my area of remit..." - like as a Tory MP, he's ever passed up on an opportunity to mouth off against gay sex - he felt visitscotland had acted "inappropriately" adding, "I find that this decision cuts across freedoms of thought and mind that many paid the price so dearly for..." Indeed they did, for many British gay servicemen and women had fought for freedoms that were never theirs. In the Netherlands, where I recently met a Glaswegian serviceman joining friends for a reunion, it is commonplace to see gay lovers walking holding hands without expecting comment or harassment. I noticed that 'straight' couples appeared to enjoy mixing with naked or clothed gays drinking in the Eldorado beach bar at Zandvoort and in another 'straight' bar I watched an attractive young man kissing his pretty, young Thai boyfriend. I was the only one paying any attention; so common is this behaviour. Scotland would've been 'outraged'! We can only hope that one day, Scotland too will be as mature as countries like the Netherlands and be recognised as a modern, progressive country in Europe and not as a nation of drunken, bigoted, religionist arseholes which already too many think we are. Well it is that time of the year again, when the parents or in my case parent comes to visit. You know how it is: can't live with them and they won't let you live without them! To be fair my father has been wonderful, after all, how many have to deal with 'Hey Dad, I have something to tell you'. They are thinking at last you have met the right girl and maybe there will be grandchildren. But no you sit them down and say, 'Well you see, Dad, for ever such a long time I have felt like a woman and I have decided to live the rest of my life as one'. 'Oh by the way sorry about the grandchildren but the meat and two veg is up for the chop!' In your own place maybe the variation was 'Actually, Dad, I prefer other men'. Or 'Actually, Mum, I like other girls!' Not something a parent ever wants to hear, however open minded or liberal their view might be. Some react badly, some love you anyway or despite all the shit you chuck at them. For all I have been through in the last five years, it is a cakewalk compared with being a parent. Okay on with the Motley, the Juju premises are now closed permanently, the shop will resurface, but as an Internet only operation. The biggest news has to be the opening of the New Caberfeidh. Located beneath the Hotel Metro on Market Street, Elaine and DJ Karen will be opening the club 5 nights per week and offering music to suit all tastes. They will be open Sun, Tue & Thu 10pm-2am and Fri & Sat 10pm-3am. A door charge will apply after Midnight at the weekends. Once again, a choice of venues is offered to the fickle clubbers of the LGBT community but only time will tell whether they and Bar Indigo can both remain open. Wellmans Health Suite has now been open for a year in August and despite the warm weather and light nights they are still proving to be popular. A new massage room and dark room have been added recently to complement the sauna, steam room, lounge area and video booth. Wellmans are located on Justice Mill Lane above the Phace Scotland offices and can be contacted on Aberdeen (01224) 211411. After the recent success of the Vagina Monologues comes something for those of you that like cock. Puppetry of the Penis will be appearing at HMT @ Hilton on Fri 1st Oct and Sat 2nd Oct. It features two handsome, well endowed men who manipulate their manhood into various shapes, objects and landmarks. Demonstrating a unique blend of 'Hanging Art' from many hours practicing in the bath and performing at hen nights this is a show not to be missed. Tickets are on sale now from Aberdeen Box Office on Aberdeen (01224) 641122. Their website is worth a look too, see http://www.puppetryofthepenis.com/As well as giving information on the background of the show and selling merchandise, they are holding auditions for future shows. Applicants should possess a unique combination of natural talent and a complete lack of shame while demonstrating a 'flexible' attitude to work. There is an email address where you can send your contact details and probably a suitable picture so I guess there are at least a few people with Gaydar profiles who could apply. The show carries a warning that it does feature full frontal male nudity so those of a sensitive nature should take note. The North East LGBT Forum is taking a break over the summer period. It will now be going through a review period having achieved 3 out of 4 of its original aims. Started back in October 2000 the Forum has achieved Limited company status, organised three successful Pride events and created a website giving details of LGBT organisations in the area. The 4th goal is to create an LGBT centre in Aberdeen. This is a long term goal and will only come about if it receives the support of the LGBT community. After the summer, the Forum will be seeking new volunteers to help address the issues faced by the many LGBT people in the North East of Scotland. All the usual gigs this month so here is a quick run down of what's what in the Dundee and Tayside area. Diversitay - the Dundee LGBT switchboard - are going to be holding their next monthly night on Wednesday 18th August in the Braes on the Perth Road. All are welcome to attend: the group will be identifiable by a member wearing a Diversitay t-shirt. More details from calling the switchboard on Dundee (01382) 202620 or from their newly re-launched web site at http://www.diversitay.org.uk/ Gay Men's Heath Tayside has published the 2004 edition of the 'Vital Statistics' questionnaire. Run by Sigma Research, this questionnaire provides an important picture of the sexual health trends of gay and bisexual men in Tayside and Scotland. It can be obtained online at http://www.gaymenshealthtayside.com/or a freepost paper version is available at various establishments throughout Tayside. Brooklyn's has had a redecoration, a fresh lick of paint and now also a stage for those wanting to perform during the karaoke sessions that are regularly occur. All the other usual drinks promos and special nights are on, including a beach party on Sat 31st Jul and the Wet Pussy Party continuing on Tuesday 3rd Aug fter a successful launch last month. Just a reminder that this is a girl's night, GBP5 entry including membership and GBP3 thereafter, guys are welcome as guests of members. Charlie's Bar are also ticking along through summer with the usual offers and the monthly quiz night, I think on Tue 3rd Aug, but check with the bar for exact details. I've not managed to get in touch with the lovely landladies at the Blue Angel Inn in Arbroath for this month's article, but I do believe that all is well although some things may be taking longer than they originally hoped. It may still have the signs with the old name (Inverpark Hotel) but it's located at 42 Millgate Loan, set back from the road.
