By the time this issue appears, the problem of Rocco Buttiglione's nomination for the post of European Commissioner will have resolved itself one way or another. Mr Buttiglione, a conservative Catholic politician backed by the Vatican, was nominated as the European Unions prospective Justice and Home Affairs Commissioner. He claims his catholic faith will not interfere with his decisions as a European commissioner. But his actions reveal that he has at least twice sought to sabotage EU measures to stop discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. The Italian LGBT movement, ArciGay, has confirmed that Buttiglione also watered down the EU's directive banning discrimination against lesbians and gays in the workplace. He introduced exemptions to the non-discrimination principle; allowing employment discrimination against LGBT people in the Italian military, police, prisons and social services. He also thinks that single mums are bad mums. The European Parliament's civil liberties committee voted against Mr Buttiglione's appointment. But the European Commission President Jose Barroso refused to dump Buttiglione; provoking a crisis between the European Parliament and the European Commission. The European Parliament can refuse to accept Buttiglione, but only if they reject all of the other nominees (including Peter Mandelson). As I write, it looks like Barroso is going to back down. We shall see. I don't actually have any problems with Buttiglione becoming a EU Commissioner. What I do object to is his getting a post where his ludicrous views could undermine the whole rationale of the post. Im sure that Herr Hitler would have made a competent Minister of Agriculture - but Justice and Home Affairs? Hardly! Many MEPs of all parties have kicked up over the proposed appointment with Michael Cashman being one of the major shit stirrers in this regard - all power to his spurtle! But Im afraid that the Liberal Democrats have a right scunner in their midst: their Leader in the European Parliament, MEP Graham Watson, gave a TV interview confirming that he would be voting for Buttiglione's appointment. Whatever next? Mussolini for Transport to ensure the trains run on time? The Caledonian Thebans Rugby team has launched its first ever fundraising calendar The Team Uncovered which features members of the team 'uncovered in tasteful but teasing photographs. The calendar was officially launched by Margaret Smith MSP at the LGBT Centre for health and Wellbeing on Fri, 15th Oct. The Caledonian Thebans RFC, named after the Theban Sacred Band (one of the most famous Greek Regiments in military history) is Scotland's first specifically gay friendly rugby club for men. The clubs playing members are predominantly gay or bisexual, but the club welcomes all! Based in Edinburgh, but with members from as far as Aberdeen, Glasgow and Berwick, the club was established because a group of gay men wanted to play contact rugby without fear of hostility or prejudice. It aims to provide the means and facilities for men who are serious about playing contact rugby to do so in a safe and supportive environment. The following local companies and organisations have sponsored each of the 12 months of the calendar: OOT at the Stand Comedy Club, Lothian Gay & Lesbian Switchboard, Gay Men's Health, LGBT Centre for Health and Wellbeing, The Witchery Restaurant, Claremont Bar, The Tower Restaurant, Prestonfield Hotel and Beyond Barriers. The Calendar is priced at GBP7.99 plus P&P and can be ordered from the website at: http://www.thebans-rfc.co.uk/ It is also on sale at The Claremont Bar, The Regent Bar, The Newtown Bar and the Q Store in Barony Street. The Chairman of the Club said The way that every member of the team embraced this project, irrespective of their sexuality, shows that the Caledonian Thebans are here to play rugby, have fun and support the club. The club is about to embark on its third year. During this season the Thebans will be playing in Edinburgh District 2nd XV B League, and with various other confirmed commitments, quite an exciting year in prospect. Affiliated to Portobello Rugby Football Club who have provided them with a lot of support in establishing themselves, they became affiliated members of the Scottish Rugby Union and Edinburgh and District Rugby Union in December 2003. CIVIL PARTNERSHIP BILL The debate on the UK Governments legislation to establish civil partnerships for same-sex couples has moved from the House of Lords to the House of Commons. The Government have also bowed to pressure from campaigners to remove the discrimination in pension rights for same-sex couples that was originally proposed in the bill. The Government have now promised that the pension rights of a civil partner whose partner dies will be the same as for a man whose wife dies. Under the Civil Partnership Bill, civil partnerships will operate almost identically to civil marriages. Same-sex couples will be able to apply to the district registrar to register a civil partnership, in a similar way to a mixed-sex couple registering a civil marriage, and the legal effects will be the same as for a marriage. The bill is supported by Labour, Liberal Democrat, SNP and Plaid Cymru MPs, and also by the Conservative party leadership. Back in June, however, the House of Lords made an attempt to kill it off. Led by right-wing Tory peers Baroness O'Cathain and Lord Tebbit, the Lords voted for a series of amendments which make the bill unworkable, leaving the Commons to sort out the mess. On October 12th, the House of Commons had its first vote on the bill. 426 MPs voted in favour, including around 90 Tories, while only 49 MPs voted against - almost all of those were Tories. That's the biggest pro-LGBT majority ever in the Commons. The bill then moved to its Committee stage, and the Committee has now removed the wrecking amendments added by the House of Lords, putting the bill back into a workable state. There will be one more vote in the House of Commons, and the vote should again be overwhelmingly in favour. But the bill then has to go back to the House of Lords. The Lords could vote to reject the changes made to the bill in the Commons, and if that happens, the bill will fail. That last vote in the Lords, around the middle of November, will decide whether same-sex couples are finally able to get the same practical protections in law as mixed-sex married couples. If the Lords let the bill pass, civil partnerships wont be available immediately - procedures need to be put in place and other legislation modified. At the moment it looks likely well have to wait until next autumn before the first registrations can take place. Tim Hopkins E-mail: tim@equality-network.org MESSAGE OF HOPE TO SECURE FULL ENJOYMENT OF GAY RIGHTS Amnesty International has announced its annual Greetings Card campaign to send messages of support to people around the world facing persecution, torture and other human rights abuses including abuses based on sexuality. The annual campaign asks people in the UK to send cards to those under threat around the world those imprisoned solely for their beliefs, those under sentence of death, those held without charge or due process and others at risk of human rights abuse. Amnesty International works closely with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) organisations from all around the world, and this years Greeting Card Campaign includes the following: J-Flag, from Jamaica, have been suffering a serious pattern of homophobic violence ranging from vigilante action in the community to ill-treatment by the police. Many gay men and lesbians in Jamaica are too afraid to speak of their experiences to human rights organisations or to tell the authorities. Jamaican laws continue to criminalise consensual sex between males. Blue Diamond Society, is a local organisation in Nepal that provides sexual health, HIV/AIDS and advocacy services to LGBT people and campaigns for their rights. The organisation is facing a possible Supreme Court ban on its activities because it was trying to make homosexual activities legal. Beginning on 1st Nov and running until 31st Jan 2005, the campaign is expected to generate thousands of messages of hope, of various faiths and none, to each of 30-plus cases featured. NEW CONSULTATION RESPONSES The Equality Network has responded to consultations on the authorisation of marches and parades, cultural rights and the remit of the Cultural Commission, the Big Lottery Fund, smoking in public places, and joint services for older people. You can find copies of all their consultation responses at http://www.equality-network.org/consultations/resp.shtml [Photo caption: Councillor Dougie Kerr opening the Remember When Project with project members Ellen Galford and Brian Thompson. Remember When has received Heritage Lottery funding to produce an exhibition recording the history of the LGBT community in Edinburgh and to set up an archive of materials and personal histories.] CECIL SINCLAIR 1931-2004 It is with deep regret that we have to announce the passing of one of the major figures in the Scottish gay rights movement of the crucial campaigning 1970's. Cecil Sinclair, a Braemar man (born 21st May 1931), joined the Scottish Minorities Group (later the Scottish Homosexual Rights Group and now Outright Scotland) in 1971 not long after its formation in 1969. Then an archivist with the Scottish Record Office, Cecil became active in SMG and was soon to become the first convenor of the newly formed Edinburgh Branch of SMG, a post he stayed in for several years. In early 1974 he was instrumental along with a handful of others in starting and working with the telephone-based SMG Edinburgh Befrienders counselling service, later to became the Lothian Gay and Lesbian Switchboard which continues to this day. Just last month, he attended the 30th anniversary celebrations for this service in the Assembly Rooms in George Street, Edinburgh. Initially the Befrienders operated out of the private homes of two dedicated members but later moved to a room at the back of the Gay Centre at 60 Broughton Street. The premises had been a former hairdressers shop which was bought by SMG Edinburgh in late 1974 with the help of an interest free loan from a very generous anonymous patron; the money raised from the very successful gay discos which SMG Edinburgh ran over the next two years helped to repay the loan. Though a closely guarded secret at the time, it can now be revealed that the anonymous patron was Cecil himself. In purchasing the centre, SMG Edinburgh also acquired some not so friendly tenants who occupied the ground floor and basement at the rear of the premises and who refused to move out. Once again, Cecil came to the rescue by buying a flat and persuading the tenants to move there at the same low rent they had been paying, thus making available the rooms at the rear of the centre for committee meetings and for the Befrienders. In 1975 Cecil played a prominent role in the BBC Open Doors TV programme about the Scottish Minorities Group in which he explained the work of the Befrienders. In June of this year he was to be heard again in two half hour BBC Radio Scotland programmes entitled Scotland The Gay, talking about gay life back in the years leading up to law reform. A keen thespian, Cecil was an active member of the Edinburgh Graduate Theatre Group with which he produced and acted in amateur productions over many years. Towards the end of his working years, Cecil suffered badly from asthma, possibly brought on by the paper dust from the old documents he worked with in his profession. Nevertheless, he continued with his amateur theatrical activities and, after retiring, he authored two books for the Scottish Record Office, Tracing Your Scottish Ancestors and Tracing Scottish Local History published by HMSO. He continued, of course, to take an interest in gay rights, though he was happy to see the torch passed to the next generation. Cecil died at home in Edinburgh on 20th Oct 2004 from a heart attack, brought on by asthma related bronchopneumonia. He will be very much missed by his many friends and acquaintances. Gregan Crawford 24th October 2004 John Hein adds: Those of our readers who have grown up gay in more recent times can have little idea of just how much we owe the older generation of campaigners for our emancipation. When Cecil put his head above the parapet by joining SMG in 1971, male homosexuality was still a serious criminal offence in Scotland and it was a very real personal risk for a civil servant to be so blatant. I mourn the passing of another Fine Old Poof. Cecil's funeral will take place at Moretonhall Crematorium at 11am on Wed 3rd of Nov. BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE Aberdeen's Granite Sisters are once again holding their much acclaimed 4-2-9 Sunday afternoon/evening meet and chat event on Sun 28th Nov. For those of you who have not managed along to the previous four events since they started in 2003 they are held in Aberdeen Arts Centre on specially assigned Sundays, and run from 4-9pm. There you can meet other lesbians and gay women from around Scotland in the privacy of the Centre, which is normally closed on a Sunday thus making this private hire safe, discreet and confidential. The cafe bar within the Centre is converted into a very cosy gay atmosphere with a great range of different music being played in the background all day. The music is not loud as the aim of the event is for women to meet, talk and be heard whilst enjoying the convivial surroundings. The bar is open to those who wish to buy a drink. Otherwise teas, coffee and nibbles are available free all day. Entry fee is GBP3. Aberdeen Arts Centre is located at the junction of King Street at its junction with West North Street and East North Street. [King Street is the continuation of Union Street at the beach end] To the back of the Arts Centre about 100yds away is the HQ of Grampian Police and Aberdeen Women's Centre on Queen Street. Parking is available in the East North Street open car park just across the road and on Queen Street. Visit http://www.4-2-9.clara.co.uk/ for all the details of the day, and a map. NEXT STOP Fife Men have announced their programme for World AIDS Day on December 1st. They'll be open from 11am-3pm, will be showing the film Common Threads throughout the day, and invite you to join their Jacob's Table by bringing your contribution to their WAD Buffet Lunch. OLDIES The Equality Network, along with Age Concern Scotland and Communities Scotland, has commissioned some research on the housing needs of older LGBT people. SDS, the company carrying out the research, now have some preliminary findings and recommendations. The EN/ACS Older LGBT Issues Forum will get a chance to look at and discuss these recommendations at a meeting on 30th Oct, in Glasgow. If you're interested in coming along (you don't need to have been involved in the Forum before) E-mail: katej@equality-network.org for more details. SPATE OF SPITE There has been a recent spate in Glasgow of homophobic stickers found in telephone boxes around the LGBT centre and gay venues. These stickers with offensive remarks related to AIDS should be left alone. If folk try to remove them they find the sticker has a sliver of razor blade behind them. Evidently Strathclyde Police and the local Council have been quick off the mark to let people know about this, but just in case the news has not spread elsewhere and you know people that go to Glasgow, please give them this friendly warning. GENDER RECOGNITION SURVEY As part of the plans for implementation of the new Gender Recognition Act, the Department for Constitutional Affairs, along with the Gender Trust, Press For Change and the FTM Network, has created a short online questionnaire for transsexual people, to get some idea of what the demand for gender recognition is likely to be in the initial year of the new system. It will only take a couple of minutes to complete and is anonymous. (It assumes that you have completed transition in the sense of living full-time in your true gender.) http//www.gendertrust.org.uk/dca_survey.php --------------------------------------------------------------- STUDENT VIEW ============ What is "Normal?" Conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected. Oxford English Dictionary Last week I was in Bournemouth standing up to those who would, well, let's just say people who don't like us very much. They were having a gathering in the town square, taking turns at telling who ever would listen about how God would cast sinners out. Of course by sinners they meant homosexuals, a few brief mentions of Sodom and Gomorrah had made that clear. To be honest I wasn't really listening, I had heard it all before, until that is, the speaker, shouting over a noisy LGBT counter demo said, 'it's just not normal, and that's what got me thinking. What is normal? Im reminded of the HSBC television adverts showing what different symbols mean in different cultures, I wondered if what people deemed to be normal in this country would be classed as abnormal by society in others, I'm pretty sure it would. For example Jewish people have their Sabbath on the Saturday, imagine a Saturday in Scotland where shops were closed and you couldn't buy alcohol. Muslim women sometimes choose to wear the hijab as a sign of their faith, imagine a Scotland where all women wore the hijab. Imagine a Scotland where everyone was in a wheelchair, and the differences in the way our society and infrastructure would develop. Imagine a Glasgow when you bought chips if they posed the question 'salt and sauce' instead of the customary 'salt and vinegar'. These are all examples of things that to the sections of our community they apply to are nothing other than normal but to outsiders looking in are often, and quite wrongly, classed as abnormal. So it seems to me that normal is just something that makes us the same as everyone else, and in today's world you'd be hard pressed to find someone exactly the same as anyone else. This week, NUS Scotland LGBT committee passed a motion condemning homophobic hotelier Tom Forrest and his 'normal Scotland' website. We say it is people like Mr Forrest, with his deeply homophobic rhetoric, that damages our tourist industry, the very thing he says he is trying to defend. Indeed Mr Forrest should realise if he wants only 'normal' customers he won't get much custom at all. So if anyone was to ask me now, are you normal? I'd say: who cares. It's my differences, and the fact that I don't conform, that make me who I am. And maybe society should stop looking for normality but instead celebrate diversity, learn about the things that make us unique, and embrace them. Maybe, just maybe, we'd all get on that little bit better. As I am all too often reminded being straight is not normal, it's just common. So I finally gave in on Thursday night and darkened the doors of the Kingdom of his Royal Lowness on Virginia Street, after many months of pestering and complaints of unfair comments in this learned and respected journal. Well, you guessed it, nothing has changed: the staff are still more interested in enjoying themselves than making sure that the punters have a good time. Unless you're desperate, give it a miss. Club Devotion is a far superior experience (of which more later). A brief mention for Glasgay! Get tickets for your favoured shows now as there is only a week to go before the start. For full details see the full review in this edition of ScotsGay. There is much to report this month and for those of you willing to be dragged kicking and screaming outside of the pink triangle some pretty good club nights are starting to appear. Thursday night myself and Leo of Glasgow G-Zone decided to attend the opening night of club Hanky Panky. This is a weekly residency at the Liquid Lounge at 94 West Regent Street. The night is influenced by the 1970s hanky code from New York. The Mirrorbaw and DJ Carole (Chakra) will keep the dance floor alive by playing deep pop/house music. Now, the venue is great and so is the sound system, however be warned it is up a hill and up two flights of a spiral staircase, so this place is definitely not wheelchair friendly. That said, if you are looking for something a little different give it a go. Deciding that the night was yet young and ligging can be fun, our next stop was Club Devotion at 18 Jamaica Street. This is a Thursday night and the joint is jumping. We meet Donny the owner/manager, who is keen to show us upstairs to the new chill out lounge, the place is still work in progress, but looks great and there are further plans to expand. The attitude of the management is terrific and they take fun seriously. These guys are putting a hell of a lot of blood sweat and money into giving you a good time. The club is open Wed-Sun 11pm-3am, entry is normally GBP3 or GBP2 with a flyer. The music is a mixture of dance and rock with plenty you will recognise and, wonder of wonders, no fucking beat box on every track like most clubs. Now to something a little different Wed 27th Oct was due to see the official launch of Rachel Jury's new book of poetry. She is extremely funny and has written some inspired words on being young and lesbian. Rachel has lived in both London and New York but now resides in Glasgow where she also works for The Poverty Alliance. She will be appearing in Club Fab at the Tron Theatre during this years Glasgay! Festival. See http://www.racheljury.co.uk/ So onward and upward in more ways than one. Melting Pot brings you 'Together, with resident DJs Andrew Pirie (Traxx / Second Nature) and special guest Billy Scullion (Muzik Box). On Saturday 6th Nov at The Liquid Lounge. 11pm-3am. Angharad E-mail: Angharad@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- OBAR DHEADHAINN - ABERDEEN SCENE ================================ Hi there and here is what's happening north of anywhere this month. The North East LGBT Forum Ltd held its AGM in the middle of October when a new board of directors was elected from existing and new members. Although NELF has been successful over the last three years in organising Pride events and working behind the scenes for the LGBT community, it has suffered from a poor image. People didn't understand what it was about or what NELF stood for. It also seemed to conjure up an image of dull meetings that never achieved anything. After becoming a limited company, it struggled to attract new members. The few that did turn up ended up doing everything. In contrast, the Pride event attracted a large number of volunteers so it was felt that change was needed. The members voted for a motion to change the name to Pride in Aberdeen. It was felt that this would give the organisation a better identity and would sound like more fun. It is hoped that this will encourage more people to get involved in the community. For those of you that don't know, the North East LGBT Forum was set up in response to the City Council's LGBT action plan back in October 2000. The idea being that the Forum would monitor the Councils progress in implementing the plan and also work for the good of the community. Unfortunately, in the last three years the Council has achieved little of its action plan. Lack of interest in the Forum from the community has meant that it has struggled to cope with the demands placed on it. One area where the Forum is successful is in organising the Pride event. Now Pride is a great flag-waving day for the out gay community and is even receiving good publicity in the local press. But it only happens on one weekend of the year and a large proportion of the community do not wish to identify with it. It's all well and good attracting people from across the country to swell the numbers but the important thing is can you be proud on your own doorstep? Many LGBT people here still believe strongly in safety in invisibility. This is a false sense of safety as it means their needs cannot be identified. Lets hope that Pride in Aberdeen remembers its roots and continues to work for the whole LGBT community in the North East of Scotland. The date for next years Pride event is Sat 4th Jun 2005 in Duthie Park and I wish everyone who gets involved has success in making it bigger and better. You will no doubt have heard that the National Front are proposing to have a march through the centre of Aberdeen on Sun 28th Nov. A group representing community groups, churches, political parties, pensioners and many individuals has been formed with the aim of preventing this march from happening. A public meeting in the Arts Centre and a mass protest outside the Town House will already have happened by the time you read this. It is hoped that this will put enough pressure on the Police and Council to prevent this march from happening. However, if it is allowed to happen, please consider protesting peacefully against this on the day. Bar Indigo plan to have a fancy dress Halloween Party on the last weekend of October and there are rumours that Caberfeidh are trying to organise a fetish night in November. Check out the clubs for the latest details. The next 4 to 9 Chat and Dance for lesbians and gay women will be held in the Arts Centre on King Street, Aberdeen on Sun 28th Nov from 4-9pm. It is aimed at bringing together like minded women from across Scotland to a relaxed, informal and friendly event. The previous couple of events have been very successful and Im sure this one will be just as good. For more details contact Granite Sisters on Aberdeen (01224) 713336. After a year of writing this article what has changed in Aberdeen? The scene still seems to be in a state of flux with no venue open for much over a year. Abacos has gone and with it the chance to enjoy a coffee in the afternoon in a gay venue. After a short period, Mint went straight and Out briefly re-opened but never recaptured its previous following. Bar Indigo still seems to be the most popular venue and the Caberfeidh under the Metro is picking up steadily. Once locals woke up to the fact that Aberdeen really did have a truly gay sauna, Wellmans started going from strength to strength. Perhaps just a sign of the times: the Grampian Switchboard closed its doors after about 26 years working for the community. It's good to report that most of the social groups are doing well - particularly for lesbians and students. Phace Scotland continues to work tirelessly for the good of the community and in addition runs several meetings and groups. The Forum organised a successful Pride event and is currently going through a transformation that will hopefully see it gain in strength. What will the next year bring? Keep reading the hallowed pages of ScotsGay to find out. Tivoli --------------------------------------------------------------- DUN DEAGH - DUNDEE SCENE ======================== Hello everybody! Yet another month has passed and for better or worse there's been little change in the LGBT scene in Dundee. Charlie's Bar have been gearing up towards their Monster Halloween Party on Sat 30th Oct. This is in association with Special FX, a costume and accessories shop in the Forum shopping centre. A discount of 10% is available at the shop on production of the promo leaflets obtainable from Charlie's Bar. Various prizes will be up for grabs during the night. The regular quiz night is next to be held on Tue 2nd Nov from 8pm onwards, with a cash prize of GBP100 up for grabs if you reckon you're smart enough. I stumbled in on last months quiz night whilst delivering the mags, and seemed like it has been getting a reasonable turnout. There has been no word on what Out or Brooklyn's Bar will be doing for Halloween, but no doubt they will mark the night with some form of entertainment. All the regular events are ongoing, karaoke with Suzie on Wed, Fri and Sun evenings in Brooklyn's and the Wet Pussy night in Out on the first Tue of the month, by my reckoning that being 2nd Nov. The next Diversitay social evening is on Wed 24th Nov, most likely held in the DCA on Perth Road from 8pm onwards. The group can be recognised as one member will have a t-shirt with the Diversitay logo on it. Exact details of the night still have to be confirmed so keep in touch with them by calling the switchboard on Dundee (01382) 202620 (Mon 7-10pm) or visit the website http//www.diversitay.org.uk/ to find out if any changes are made. My apologies to Diversitay for not being in touch for a while, but hopefully I am managing to keep up to date with news of their good work from the website and will try my best to call before writing the next article. Well, as I said, not much news this month, or should I say not much filler as the news bit is normally limited anyway but hey, sure the Ed will manage to fill the page out somehow. Any comments, insults or newsworthy donations are welcome to the usual E-mail address below or direct to the magazine. Popping up again like an advert twice the volume of the programme you're watching, Mrs Katie Grant, that Catholic, English, Conservative religionist, hated by readers; beloved by commissioning editors, especially from The Scottish Daily Mail, The Sunday Times Scotland, The Scotsman and even BBC Scotland, churned out more of her tiresome Catholic propaganda in The Scotsman. Can you believe, trying to justify religious apartheid in schools? On the back of another campaign, launched by the Catholic Church to promote its dodgy 'values, like 'no sex, sex education, she wagged her finger The Church has decided that the time has come to try to flex some political muscle against the party in power. The time has come? Don't they do it all the time, currently in Spain they are calling gay marriage a 'virus that could be unleashed on the country after Prime Minister Zapetero promised to introduce same-sex marriage. Mrs Grant - yes, the same one who gave so much Catholic-inspired support for the religionist-funded Keep the Clause campaign, aimed at thwarting the repeal of the homophobic Section 28 - now admitted: No priest in 2004 says 'vote thus and expects the congregation to obey. It's a pity she didn't say that in 2000 when Catholic congregations were urged to vote in a privately-funded opinion poll to measure the support for stopping gay kids in Scotland receiving adequate, fair and equal sex education. (Not that they do that now, even without the dreadful Clause). Grant advised Peter Kearney, the spokesman for the Catholic Church in Scotland that he needed to be more subtle than screaming, as he was, that Catholics would not vote Labour at the next election if their kids shared schools with other religionists and those with none at all. Whipping out her pinny, she attempted to clean up the pigs ear her Church had made of the whole affair. In the New English Version of Scotland's sectarian past she started from when the drive against sectarianism became a devolved Executives crusade. With all the subtlety of a glass clown, she insisted: For those whose only interest is anti-sectarianism and social integration mixed campuses seem the obvious answer. But Catholicism is not something occasional, to be espoused every Sunday. It is not a hobby or a rather eccentric interest, something you pick up and put down she admonished. It is a 24-hours-a-day thing, adding: And whilst the Catholic hierarchy unreservedly supports social integration and religious tolerance, it supports them as part of itself, not at its own expense. Work that one out, if you will! In support of apartheid, Mrs Grant stormed: Catholic-lite will not do, in education or in anything else and any bishop who says it will be guilty of gross dereliction of his duty. She labelled opposition to shared campuses both justifiable and necessary. And, when not distorted by ignorance and human wickedness, the Church can suddenly and mysteriously become, a powerful force for good. And in her usual tub-thumping mode, she advised: To this end, we need from the Catholic Church less political tub-thumping Don't do yourself out of all your jobs, dear! What would Scotland be without you? (No, don't tempt me)! The Scottish Daily Mail, one of the Bibles later add-ons, was satisfied that Scots reject 'safe sex education plan. Our old friend Graham Grant, (E-mail: g.grant@dailymail.co.uk) shook his wee tambourine once again, to insist that a majority of Scots believe schools should teach children to avoid sex altogether rather than how to do it safely. A piece of advice that was as stupid as it was dangerous had Graham Grant foolishly adding: The Scottish Executive has drawn up proposals which include sex education for toddlers and increased availability of the morning-after Pill for schoolgirls. Have they? Because this is all news to me! And news to the Scottish Executive too, I shouldn't doubt! The research echoed similar stunts performed by militant religionists during the so-called Keep the Clause debacle whereby they turned to System 3 polls for a plethora of 'surveys aimed at showing their rotten case in a more favourable light. This time, the Catholic Church was commissioning the poll as part of their ongoing campaign to undermine properly conducted research and debate aimed at moving Scots away from the religious and moral conundrum that had resulted in high teenage pregnancy rates and a mushrooming of STIs. Grant decided: The results will further increase pressure on First Minister Jack McConnell to scrap the plans. System 3 used less than one thousand respondents from a broad range of religious backgrounds Of course, we are still waiting for this string of D-list celebrities we were promised by the Catholic Church, to creep out from under their frocks in support of their piss-poor campaign. For goodness sake, hurry up about it; Im dying for a laugh! Lets not make any mistake about with whom we are dealing here! These militants, advocators of sexual and religious apartheid, want the construction of a brick wall in a school gymnasium to make two smaller gymnasiums in order that children of different religions can be segregated. It is bad enough that there is still denial of the scandalous mass migration of thousands of talented young people and gays who fled Scotland during one of its worst periods of grim theocracy in the sixties, seventies and eighties. Now, amidst concerns that Scotland's population is in decline, Catholic columnist flag bearer, Mrs Grant, tried to put her thoughts together on the subject. With her work cut out, writing for so many papers, she had to put this one together shopping in John Lewis. For The Sunday Times Scotland's grim Ecosse supplement, she advised: The reason Scotland is short of people is simple. As fast as we have babies, they grow up and leave. Shelf-clearing Scottish Women Against Pornography leader Catherine Harper was at it again. (Cant say I've ever liked the bitch anyway). Now I really loathe her, especially now this heavy-handed, censorious 'feminist has forced me to defend the Bank of Scotland! (In 1999, former BoS bank boss, Peter Burt flew out with Jack 'Keep the Clause Irvine to meet TV evangelist, Pat Robertson, the owner of a mammoth educational, legal and media empire, including his 'Family Channel, pumped into 59 million homes across the US, to sort out the mess the bank had got itself into doing a deal with Robertson). But I'd rather slip under the sheets with the new Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) than join the latest load of so-called 'feminists, building alliances with Catholic militants and 'fighting porn. SWAP, when they're not busy taking pictures of men going into lap-dancing clubs to put up on some sort of 'name and shame website, want everyone to close their account with HBOS because they helped Remnant Media with a GBP5m loan to buy a package of 45 magazine titles from Richard Desmond, largely seen as a move to clean up his image before he put in an offer for The Daily Telegraph. (He still hung on to Forum and The Fantasy Channel though, after dumping, titles like Asian Babes, Big Ones, Just 18 and the fabulous Readers Wives. (Come on, girls, where's Readers Husbands)? Ms Harper told The Herald: We know a number of people are not happy with what is going on with the bank. When we have told people about its investment in porn, they have been shocked and said they weren't aware of it. With nothing to seize off the top shelf but promotional leaflets for opening a new account, a gaggle of women, including representatives from the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), led by Ms Harper held meetings in Edinburgh and threatened to storm the banks branches. Instead of telling her to go and take a hike, the bank issued a public apology, mumbling something about it not being aware what had been arranged, and promised not to do it again. Yes, it's true, a significant number of men enjoy erotica, but a significant number of women enjoy romantic fiction. Is that any less 'pornographic in its reinforcement of stereotypes? The commercial exploitation of women? Oh, please! If you want a real feminist, then Elfriede Jelineks your lady! She banned performances of her sexually frank novels in her native country of Austria after the right-wing 'Freedom Party joined the government. Her works, unsurprisingly, are not well known in the UK. (Although you might remember the Cannes prize-winning autobiographical film, The Piano Teacher, her excellent book of the same name, published by Serpents Tail, sadly, did not sell well). Some critics complain it was pornography in the guise of high art, wrote Tim Cornwell in The Scotsman. Jelinek has recently won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Porn author wins Nobel ran The Scotsman's header. Jelineks work includes graphic descriptions of sado-masochistic sex and violence against women The song-writer and singer Bob Dylan was among the better-known names passed over yesterday. The 57-year-olds liberal attitudes to sex have not gone down very well in Austria, either. It sounds a choice bit of local democracy in action when an 'independent statutory body, comprising entirely of local councillors, allows itself to be led by Christian morality, like refusing to issue licences to lap-dancing clubs. It becomes positively derisible when the council threatens legal action against the board after they gave the go-ahead for a lap-dancing club! The club, For Your Eyes Only asked only that they be judged on whether they were reputable applicants and the premises were suitable. The licensing board faced accusations--including in this column--that a commissioned 'report by Julie Bindel, condemning lap-dancing, were drawn up by a known critic. (Another so-called 'feminist). Moral campaigner, Jim Coleman, the Glasgow City Councils deputy leader told The Herald: I call again for the Scottish Executive to award more powers to local authorities to control the proliferation of these demeaning activities. Look at them! A few twirls round the pole and some exercises in sexual expression would do them all a world of good. Ask their wives! Over the past few years, the rate of new, and re-infections, of syphilis has risen alarmingly. Reports are coming from many GUM clinics throughout Europe of increases of 20% in the last three month periods. Syphilis is reckoned to be the most deadly of STIs (sexually transmitted infections) apart from HIV. Signs of this bacterial infection range from skin eruptions to complications of the heart and nervous system. If left untreated, it can have fatal consequences. The transmission routes for this nasty are many and easy while in the throws of passion. Syphilis is caused by bacteria which takes the form of a microscopic corkscrew. The transmission route is by close personal contact with broken or infected skin (lesions anywhere on the body) and/or by exchange of 'any body fluid. The most common route of infection is through kissing, unprotected oral, anal or vaginal sex. Evidence suggests syphilis can be easily transmitted from mother to baby. Syphilis is a condition that has three very distinctive stages: primary syphilis, secondary and tertiary syphilis. Of the three stages, the primary and secondary are the most highly contagious. Syphilis lowers the effectiveness of the immune system, a mechanism we all have to fight off infections, and those living with HIV can find that untreated syphilis can make their HIV more easily transmissible to others. Those HIV negative will find the exposure will lower their resistance to all infections including HIV. The most alarming revelation regarding this infection lies in the fact that it can go undetected by even the trained eye of the clinician at your GUM clinic and can often only be reliably detected by biological tests. So how can we all continue to enjoy our hard-fought sexual freedom and keep safe? Those of you who are enjoying up the bum sex are already, I trust, wearing your Extra Strong Condom (use a new one each time, of course) which will help to protect against not only HIV but also Syphilis and a host of other nasties. But if you like it in the mouth, the humble flavoured condom and equally tasteful dental dam are your new friends. The bad news is that neither of these lovelies are available from your usual outlets in gay venues. However, here in the Lothians there is a wonderful health project called the 'C card. This is a free service for those living within the NHS Lothian Area and is run through various outlets such as GUM clinics, community centres, student/youth projects and advice shops. However, if you live furth of the Lothians, I am sure with a quick search of the listings in the back of this edition you will easily find a GUM clinic or LGBT health project in your area which offers this service and support. If you are unable to find these tasteful treats, you can still offer yourself the same level of protection by using our friend the Extra Strong Condom - like cocks, you'll get used to the taste! For many the thought of using such a barrier at a moment of heightened emotions will seem such a turn off. But, having taken a moment to ponder the short and long-term consequences of this most deadly of infections on your health, you will find it a small accommodation to make. Both the condoms and the dental dams are available in flavours which will do nothing to cool your lust in the night or scupper your latest diet. Leaving you blessed with continued good health and a high shagability factor. Blessings of good health. Sister Athletica de la Bain OPI http://www.thesisters.org.uk/ Male Order Ride And don't forget that Healthy Gay Scotland do a free lube and condom service by post for those of you lovelies in parts of Scotland miles from other free supplies. Reports said she was raped repeatedly and stabbed and her neck was broken. To all of us who knew her and shared the great privilege of her wit, sense of the absurd, steely determination, intelligence, and unwillingness to let bureaucracy and lies stand in the way of justice, our loss is incomprehensibly great, said Paula Ettelbrick, executive director of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission. FannyAnn Eddy was a person of extraordinary bravery and integrity, who literally put her life on the line for human rights, said Scott Long, director of Human Rights Watch's LGBT project. Again and again, within her country's borders and beyond, she drew attention to the harassment, discrimination and violence lesbian and gay people face in Sierra Leone. Eddy, 30, was part of the delegation IGLHRC and Human Rights Watch took to the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva last spring to advocate for the failed Resolution on Sexual Orientation and Human Rights. She leaves behind a 9 year old son. Donations to support the boy and the Sierra Leone gay group are being collected by the African gay Web site Behind the Mask, http://www.mask.org.za/ +BARRY MANILOW APOLOGIZES TO GAYS Singer Barry Manilow has said he's sorry he offended some gay people and others in the audience during his recent concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City. As he was introducing a love-song duet he was about to sing with a male star of his upcoming Broadway musical about a 1930s German boy band, Manilow said, Of course, were not going to sing it to each other -- that would be creepy. Several concertgoers contacted this reporter to complain about the remark. Asked to respond, Manilow said: Im terribly sorry if I offended anyone. I meant it only as a joke about Brian [d'Arcy James] and me, and not as a reflection on anyone else. I strongly believe in and support equal rights and acceptance for everyone, and apologize if my joke came off to the contrary. +Czech Parliament to consider partner bill The Czech Republic Parliament will again consider a same-sex registered-partnership bill in coming weeks, Radio Prague reported. Since the last attempt to enact partnership registration, public opinion has shifted to favour recognition of same-sex unions, the report said. The proposal would grant registered couples most marriage rights but withhold adoption rights. +Toronto police chief poses for gay mag cover Toronto Police Chief Julian Fantino appears on the cover of this months Fab, a Toronto gay magazine, surrounded by models dressed as the pop group the Village People. The Village People -- that's such a police icon, and at the same time it's rooted in gay culture, Fab editor Mitchel Raphael told the Globe and Mail newspaper. The chief said: 'Oh, the Village People. My wife dances to the YMCA. I think when he made the association that the Village People are so mainstream and that it would be something meaningful to the gay community, he said that's great. Fantino arrived at his Toronto job with antigay baggage from his days as police chief of London, Ontario, where he created an antipedophilia task force that mainstream gay activists denounced as a gay witch hunt. +Man called 'Fifi' wins payout A gay man who was called a Fifi by a car salesman in Sorel, Quebec, has been awarded $1,000 by the provincial Human Rights Tribunal. The tribunal said salesman Marcel Bardier at the Roger Poirier Automobile dealership used hurtful and vexatious terms. The use of this term wounds and adds to the disgrace and lack of respect of human dignity [of] a person, homosexuals in particular, Judge Michele Pauze The auto dealership also was ordered to pay Dominique Lanthier expenses and interest. Sorel is about 42 miles northeast of Montreal. +Dutch worried about gay acceptance The Netherlands Social and Cultural Planning Office thinks acceptance of gay people may be on the decline and has launched a study to look at the matter. The office is particularly upset about the recent rejection of the gay youth magazine Expreszo by scores of Christian and immigrant-oriented schools. Surveys show a majority of Dutch residents believe the magazine should be distributed to help combat antigay discrimination. Some school officials said they were upset about a tolerance test in the magazine that refers to seeing a neighbour having sex with a goat. +Aussie Anglicans dump gays Delegates to the General Synod of Australia's Anglican Church have resolved to reject church blessings of same-sex couples and the ordination of sexually active gays. The delegates also praised the nations recently enacted ban on same-sex marriage. The moves put the Australian church at odds with Canada's Anglican church and the US Episcopal Church, the American branch of Anglicanism. Some US and Canadian dioceses bless same-sex unions and the US church allowed the election of an open gay bishop in the New Hampshire diocese. +German gays see syphilis outbreak Syphilis cases increased 20 percent in Germany last year. Urban gay men are the most affected. Of the 2,932 cases diagnosed in 2003, 90 percent were among men and 75 percent were among gay men. Berlin saw the highest number of infections, followed by Hamburg, Frankfurt, Cologne and Munich --------------------------------------------------------------- ARTS: FILMS TO WATCH OUT FOR ============================ There is another side of Colin Farrell. His public image is a passion for booze, swearing arrogance in TV interviews and not being aware if you are known to earn millions a movie, getting a girl pregnant in America could lose you at least one of those in a court settlement. Less than sober and falling down a flight of stairs while on location for Alexander meant he was flown to his Irish home in a wheelchair. But A Home At The End Of The World (15) proves Mr Farrell can be incredibly sensitive. It is about two boys who develop an incredible friendship. His parents die so the friends parents take him in and the boys share a bed together. Their sexual interest in each other is because they are more like brothers than lovers. Because their mother, Sissy Spacek, is a brilliant cook she teaches Colin so well he becomes a baker on leaving school. When the friend, Dallas Roberts, goes off to college and then gets a job in the big city they are apart for a few years. Dallas lives a gay lifestyle although he shares a flat with a woman. When Colin finally joins them she finds him irresistible, soon drags him to the bed and becomes pregnant. He considers the three of them a family to bring up the child together. If the idea of watching Colin kiss a man on the lips appeals, make sure you see A Home At The End Of The World. I love to see actresses with strong personalities still working in their ripe old age and Maggie Smith has two movies in November well worth seeing if you don't demand gunfire, car chases and special effects. For Ladies In Lavender (12a) she is joined by Judi Dench as sisters living on the Cornish coast inthe l930s who find an attractive Polish young man unconscious on their beach. It is never adequately explained how he fell off a ship America bound, but they are pleased to nurse him back to life and teach him English. Time reveals he is a brilliant violinist, however their lives begin to crumble when he moves away to find fame. My House In Umbria (12a) has Maggie as a romantic novelist suffering a terrorist train explosion who invites recovering passengers to spend time at her small Italian hotel. Our favourite TV comedy star of the past, Ronnie Barker, came out of retirement to play a rare serious role. The curious judgements of cinema bookers are making us wait till March for one of the most successful Italian films ever made The Keys Of The House. They must be uncertain the story will appeal to British audiences as it tells of a 15 year old boy with a disabled leg and arm who meets his father for the first time who has agreed to take him to a Berlin hospital for rehabilitation. The boys mother died when he was born and her parents have brought him up. His father is now married with a newborn son, but has a conscience about neglecting him for so long. Their relationship is engrossing to watch and the father, Kim Rossi Stuart, is one of the best looking guys you've ever seen on screen. Charlotte Rampling, whose daughter is an invalid at the hospital, helps him cope with his problems. Although I cried much of the time it will always be one of my favourite films. Zach Braff is a very desireable young American actor who wrote a script he knew wouldn't cost much to shoot and persuaded Miramax Films to make Garden State (15) which opens in December. They even let him play the lead and direct it. Returning to his hometown for his mothers funeral he drinks and smokes with college friends. His meanderings are tolerable only because he is so good to look at and his lips are magnificent. Current Releases Cole Porter, one of the most original popular song writers of the last century, who happened to be gay, has had his life filmed in De-lovely(PG). It happened before in 1947 called Night And Day starring Cary Grant, but in those days Hollywood censorship forbade mention of the word 'homosexuality. Coming from a family with money, as in the 1920s the wealthy rarely admitted to being gay, he married an older woman richer than him, who had already been divorced, and she encouraged him to write successful musicals. This film combines a dramatic story line with clever musical numbers that make it essential viewing. The brilliance of Cole's mind and the tragedy of his later life after a horse riding accident that made him crippled is superbly acted by Kevin Kline. His wife is the enchanting Ashley Judd and with guest singing stars there just to perform one Porter number it makes up two hours you must not miss. The only imperfection is that Kevin is too mature for the role. Look out for a good looking singer, John Barrowman, performing Night And Day who would have been ideal for it. He is currently on the London stage in the musical Chicago at the Adelphi Theatre and positively should be seen. An Indian lady living in Britain, Gurinda Chadha, who has already directed a hit movie, Bend It Like Beckham, has filmed an updated version of the famous book of the past Pride And Prejudice calling it Bride And Prejudice. This woman is so astute that she wrote the script, cast it perfectly and directed it with more imaginative effects than I have seen on screen for years. At an Indian wedding a mother with four marriageable daughters becomes desperate to find them comfortably off husbands. It combines beautifully costumed and choreographed musical numbers with two of the best looking leads you have ever seen having a hard time before the finale. It may not be a name that is easy for British ears to remember, but Gurinda Chadha could become a giant of the film industry. I don't enjoy kidnapping films, but Cellular (15) kept me interested as it had Kim Basinger pleading with a new young man, Chris Evans, in phone calls to help her time of desperate need. Mr Evans is so attractive he could become a fantasy for millions. That is all you need to know. The French Triple Agent (U) is set in the Paris of 1936 where there are white and red Russians still discussing their 1917 revolution and whether it was a good idea. As we know Stalin loved murdering anyone who disagreed with him and got rid of millions of his own people, the outcome of this film is predictable. But its expertise makes it watchable. Every so often a great curiosity turns up in films and Triumph Of Love (PG) is one of them. Based on an 18th century play, it is a comedy of errors with the leading lady dressed and masquerading as a man courting a girl on a French country estate. The American Mira Sorvino is so enjoyable to watch I almost forgot this kind of film will baffle most modern audiences. Ben Kingsley and a selection of 18th century characters could keep you amused. Anyone who enjoys watching guys in drag will appreciate Stage Beauty (15) as in 17th century Britain women were not allowed to perform in theatres. Rupert Everett as Charles II alters the law and Billy Crudup stops playing female roles forever. The only false note is Ben Chaplin losing sexual interest in Billy when he stops playing women onstage. In Fakers (15) for reasons never detailed Matthew Rhys owes GBP50,000 to a gangster who will inflict major injuries on him before long if he is not paid. He persuades an artist friend to make copies of a newly discovered medieval drawing and the scam is to sell them to several dealers at the same time. Worth seeing as Mr Rhys has considerable appeal. There are those amongst us who hope that the incredible luck Hugh Grant had with 4 Weddings And A Funeral becoming a world hit just might happen to Paul Bettany with Wimbledon. Playing a struggling tennis player who lacks faith in himself, his love life and home life with his parents is leading up to the Wimbledon finals. Millions may love it. Turkish born Ferzon Ozpetek has lived the bulk of his life in Italy making films with gay themes always casting impressive men. Facing Windows (15) mostly covers a lovely married woman with two children under ten whose husband has no ambition, but befriends a pensioner in the street one day who has lost his memory and brings him home. The ray of hope for her is a stunning bachelor living opposite who is obsessed with her. As Mr Ozpetek made this when the pensioner regains his memory we find he is gay. Hollywood was short of script ideas so they bought the rights of a French movie and remade it as Wicker Park (12a). Josh Hartnett juggles having affairs with two women at the same time. Hartnett fans will enjoy. It was such a popular book in the middle of the 19th century it was made into an opera, ballet and a few films. The latest is Carmen (15) set in Spain of that period and as the leads are so appealing you can understand his obsession with her even though she keeps reminding him she is a smalltime thief and worthless. Anyone who has felt sexual obsession will appreciate this most. DVD World Anyone with an interest in tasteful films of the past will have seen movies made by director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant. Twenty of their titles are now on DVD. The most interesting is Maurice from 1987 with James Wilby, Hugh Grant and Rupert Graves at their magnificent best. It explains the exhaustion of growing up gay in 1910 and being unaware that millions of others had this predicament. James and Hugh meet as university students with Hugh terrified of taking it further as celebrities were being hounded by the police. Only a few years before, Oscar Wilde had been imprisoned and driven to live in France. This film is almost a masterpiece and only missing in establishing a strong attraction between James and Rupert, a humble employee on a grand estate, who fancy each other. Seeing a ladder against the house wall leading to James bedroom Rupert climbs it for a night of excitement. The big advantage of having this DVD is that the makers and the leading men are filmed today talking about making love to each other. For many, this will not be just for renting, but for keeping for all time. Tom of Finland must be the worlds best known gay artist and his drawings of extraordinary men have created a fantasy many have modelled their look on. A DVD about his life (1920-1991) explains having sex with German and Russian soldiers in the war made him begin drawing the masculine ideal. A launch party in a London nightclub brought vast numbers of guys with the Tom of Finland look, but the PR company handling it underestimated the thirst of journalists only allocating one drink per person. Are we making the most of our sex lives? Lace Digital Media have filmed a selection of guys and girls happy to get their kit off to illustrate how they keep their relationships sexually satisfying. Modern Loving just might improve your almost perfect techniques. Malcolm Epstein --------------------------------------------------------------- BOOKS ===== The Queer Encyclopaedia Of The Visual Arts Claude J. Summers (Editor) Cleis Press GBP19.99 It cant have escaped the most adamant of queer bashers out there that some of the most popular and indeed greatest artists throughout the ages have been or are, ahem, queer. And here is a book that celebrates that fact and shouts it from the roof tops: the visual arts would be a lot poorer without the contribution of gay, lesbian, transgender and queer artists to painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture and architecture. There has always been a distinctly queer presence in the history of the visual arts - from Michelangelo's David and homoerotic images on ancient Greek vases to Frida Kahlo's self-portraits and the photography of Claude Cahun and Robert Mapplethorpe. The Queer Encyclopaedia of the Visual Arts showcases those enormous contributions in easy readable essays that will keep you turning pages long after you've found the answers you were looking for. This is a very well produced book, with 120 b/w photos and illustrations throughout and indispensable for any of us that have an interest in the finer things in life. Kings And Queens Queers at the Proms: An Oral History David Boyer Soft Skull Press GBP16.99 Do you remember the movie Carrie? well, throughout reading this book I could not help but feel reminded of this excellent movie, but apart from that I don't think that this book has an awful lot to offer the readers on this side of the pond. Yes, it is a humorous coffee table book that uses the rite of passage of the prom to discuss queer and transgender identities. And yes it might be a diverse group of LGBTs that talk about their proms and their lives since to create an oral and visual history that shows how being an LBGT teen has and has not changed over the past 75 years. And yes, their stories might consist of often hilarious prom photos and personal accounts that range from funny to sobering to heart-warming, but I could not see the relevance for anyone in the UK that didn't get to go to an American prom. In short, unless you've got an affinity for or personal experience with the American way of life this book might just be a tad too boring to really deserve pride of place on a Scottish coffee table. Ironmen Lorenzo Gomez Bruno Gmuender GBP 22.95 Now here's a book for any self-respecting queer coffee table in Scotland, with muscles and machines, steel and sex: it looks like the industrial revolution is starting again! Gomez models proudly display their meaty masculinity against powerful industrial backdrops. This photographer presents fiery images against a setting sun, stylized and unusually lit. These macho Latinos seem to melt into the massive surroundings of zmachines, chains and desert sand. They're hot! This apparently is Lorenzo Gomez first book with Bruno Gmuender publishing. The American photographer really knows how to fan the flame of gay fantasies, using warm colours and interesting settings. Sebastian & Friends George Duroy Bruno Gmuender GBP 23.95 Here's another one for your coffee table, or your bed side table The photographer and director George Duroy released his first gay hardcore film in 1994, starting the Bel Ami brand. His current book of photos is devoted to one of its superstars Sebastian Bonnet, in wonderful solo portraits and also together with his friends. Sebastian's boyish innocence and natural charm make him leap off the page, straight into your heart. Bel Ami's boys are more playful than ever before. Their breathtakingly beautiful bodies and improbably handsome faces are forever captured in these enchanting photos fuelling many a fantasy for lovers of pretty boys. Where The Boys Are William J. Mann Kensington GBP10.99 But enough of the picture books, let's do some reading, shall we. I'll start with a book I actually overlooked until now and although it was released in June this year it's still well worth going out and getting a copy, especially if, like me, you've read the first book of this story, The Men from the Boys. In this witty and provocative follow-up to Mann's acclaimed best-seller, Jeff O'Brien is back with his friends, tricks, old loves, and irresistible strangers... Jeff and his on-off lover Lloyd Griffith are thirty-something professionals still grieving the death of their mentor, Javitz. Jeff bounces from party to party, forgetting his pain only when he's on the dance floor, immersed in a sea of beautiful boys. At his side is his protege, best friend, and not-so-secret admirer Henry Weiner, once a ninety-eight-pound weakling who has lately blossomed into a hunky muscle-boy escort. As the lives of Jeff and Henry intertwine, each confronts a different challenge. This book deserves to be just as much of a best seller as the first in this series, but don't fret if you've not had the pleasure of reading The Men from the Boys, this book stand up on its own very well. Between The Palms A Collection of Gay Travel Erotica Michael T. Luongo (Editor) Harrington Park Press GBP9.99 Whenever I read a book like this one, I think that I really should sit down one of these days and write up my own experiences when I was a youngster in the 60s & 70s, when it was perfectly safe to go and explore the world by just sticking out your thumb. These six stories are set all across the globe and were written by noted gay writers, celebrating the deep, erotic connections that can be made beyond the borders. They've brought back memories of beautiful boys in Morocco, great experiences in Spain, BJs in Holland and many other encounters now considered too dangerous. Compiled by travel writer and editor Michael Luongo, this anthology presents the real adventures of world wanderers who found romance and hot sex in the most exotic and erotic of locations -from the steamy nightclubs of Buenos Aires, to the beaches of the Caribbean and the Pyramids of Giza. Celebrating the beauty and abandon of gay male sex, this is your ticket to a dream journey. The Snowman Joerg Fauser Bitter Lemon Press GBP8.99 A real rarity, this book was brilliantly translated from German by Anthea Bell and far from getting lost in translation it was an action packed adventure from beginning to end. As I was brought up in Germany I was intrigued to read this story about the shady under belly of this usually squeaky clean country. The hero of this book, Blum, finds five pounds of top-quality Peruvian cocaine in a suitcase. His adventure started in Malta where he was trying to sell porn magazines, the latest in a string of dodgy deals that never seem to come off. A left-luggage ticket from the Munich train station leads him to the cocaine. That's where his problems begin in earnest. Pursued by the police and drug traffickers, the luckless Blum falls prey to the frenzied paranoia of the cocaine addicts and dealers. His desperate search for a buyer takes him from Munich to Frankfurt, and finally to Ostend. This is a fast-paced thriller written with acerbic humour, a hardboiled evocation of drug-fuelled existence and a penetrating observation of those at the edge of German society. Apparently this book was made into a movie, probably one to look out for Dirk Kriete ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTSGAY VOICE FOR PERSONALS ============================ (We regret that this service is only available within the UK) To reply to ScotsGay Voice Ads, phone 09068 556613 (calls charged at 60p per minute) and use the number at the end of the ad.
