However, the foil was abruptly replaced when Charles Clarke was named as his successor. To be quite honest, when it comes to recent Home Secretaries, there's not much to choose between The Demon Headmaster, Shagger and Big Ears in terms of their control freakery and sincere belief that They Are Right. A recording I made as a student radio reporter of Straw and Clarke on a demo singing "Healey is a Tory he shall be removed, just like the scum on top of Watney's Special" is not only dated by its reference to a disgusting brown liquid hopefully no longer in production, but to a Labour politician who is still alive - having outlasted my father with whom he served in the Royal Engineers, the pair being the only members of their unit to survive World War II. Healey, a former Communist and Pacifist, moved towards the right over the years - the demo was in protest at his cuts in education spending whilst Chancellor of the Exchequer . He too was a man convinced that He Was Right (which is why my father couldn't abide him). But one thing even he never campaigned for is what is fast becoming a symbol of NuLabour's "We Know What's Good For You" state: the introduction of Identity Cards. In 1950, having gone through a war where ID cards were considered a necessity, dry cleaner Clarence Henry Willcock took a scunner to them and refused to produce his to a police officer. In 1951, the High Court agreed with him and the National Registration Act consequently was repealed. Basically, although the cards had been introduced for a real security reason, by the time that the war ended, that reason no longer existed. Strangely enough, we've managed to get on fine without ID cards through a period when a real security situation existed - when the Provisional IRA were actively conducting military operations on the UK mainland. It's only now, half a century after their abolition, that ID cards are being again being punted this time as The Answer in a nebulous "War on Terrorism". But they are no answer at all! Just bear in mind that the perpetrators of the 11th September attacks in the USA used their own names. Do you really want to have to pay nearly £100 for a card you don't want, which probably won't even work properly (like most Government IT projects) and which you'll have to produce at the whim of every little Hitler? And you can bet your bottom dollar that the little Hitlers will turn much of their attention to people they don't like: us! Fight back before it's too late: sign up for the campaign at http://www.no2id.net/ John Hein E-mail: editorial@scotsgay.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS ==== YOUTH Praise Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Youth Scotland, has been recognised for its "remarkable achievement" in citizenship at an annual event intended to highlight the good work that many young people do across the country. The Edinburgh based organisation that focuses on tackling homophobic bullying in schools was one of a batch of organisations that was awarded in a ceremony organised in recognition of murdered head teacher Philip Lawrence. As well as working to increase LGBT visibility and awareness, the organisation was congratulated for its work in stamping out homophobia and anti-gay bullying amongst young people. Additionally, it held a symposium in Edinburgh to highlight issues surrounding young people's sexuality, including drugs alcohol, sexual health and identity. LGBT Youth Scotland spokesman Sean Green (17) said, "We were initially just appreciative of the nomination, and recognised how important the award could be in raising awareness but we're thrilled with the award". "To get this far is a great achievement and is recognition of what can be achieved in the local community. We are grateful to all those who continue to support us." The London ceremony was attended by Home Office minister Fiona Mactaggart and Frances Lawrence, the widow of the headteacher who was murdered in 1995. News reader and TV presenter Sir Trevor McDonald hosted the event, whilst the then Home Secretary David Blunkett sent a video message congratulating the group. Each winning group will now receive £1000 to carry on their good work. The Importance of BEING CIVIL I was having a meal with a woman whose son I used to babysit for: the civil partnership bill had just passed. (The son is now 24, and well past needing a babysitter: I mention it in case he's reading this.) "Why do you care so much about the civil partnership bill passing?", she asked. "It's just civil marriage. I've always been against marriage. Why do you want to be married?" Well, I don't, personally - haven't met the right woman yet - but I see the Civil Partnership Act as one of the major victories of the LGBT rights movement. Certainly 2004 was a good year: we got both the Gender Recognition Act and the Civil Partnership Act. I started to explain very carefully that civil partnership meant that now same- sex couples could, if they chose, have virtually all the rights that mixed-sex couples have in civil marriage. (The main exception, in Scotland, is adoption: the Family Law bill won't pass until the end of 2005.) Furthermore, because the law now recognises that same-sex couples exist, cohabiting same-sex couples will have the same rights and obligations as cohabiting mixed-sex couples - which will bring its own problems with it: the DSS, for example, will now have the right to ask about a same-sex cohabiting partner as they now do about a mixed- sex cohabiting partner. "No, no," she said. "The rights you get in marriage are so limited. Why do you think it's so important?" A few years ago, when her partner and the father of her son was dying, this virulent opponent of marriage got married. A civil marriage in a registry office, of course: purely because they both, herself and her partner of many years, wanted her to have the benefits of his pension: wanted her to be able to inherit their shared home without paying tax on his half: wanted her to be able to have access to the rights that being married gives. I could have pointed this out to her: that the rights she was assuring me were unimportant were rights she'd always had. But I didn't want to be cruel. Instead I told her about a friend whose girlfriend lives in Australia, who were both celebrating on opposite sides of the world, because this Act meant that they now had access to the same immigration rights that straight people take for granted: instead of having to prove two years cohabitation, they could civil-partner (we need a verb for this!) and have the right to live together in the UK as spouses. That's why the Civil Partnership Act is important. For the first time ever, same-sex couples in the UK will be able to access the benefits that mixed-sex couples take for granted. It's not marriage: but the benefits and obligations are almost identical to marriage. And, most of all, it means that from being invisible in the law, officially unrecognised, same-sex couples are now officially acknowledged to exist. That's a big step forward. The Civil Partnership Act is very close to what the Equality Network, and the LGBT community in Scotland, agreed was important and decided to campaign for, back in 2001: not marriage, but civil partnership, with benefits and obligations identical to marriage. We wanted civil partnership to be available to mixed-sex couples as well as same-sex couples, and it's not - as yet - but perhaps it will be in the future. Jane Carnall The text of the Civil Partnership Act is available here: http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts2004/20040033.htm GRAEME EDWARDS 1960-2004 Wee man... Wee G... Runt and the rest. Graeme to his mum. It wasn't difficult to just love him. A wee Dundodian with a big everything, especially smile! Graeme, born on 8th October 1960 to Margaret and George, was the last of three boys, David first then George Jnr. Always having a shrewd business head on him from an early age made it no surprise that he would be seen providing services for the public behind the counter of his own businesses. Moving to Edinburgh around 21 years old his smiling face could be seen and his wicked sense of humour be heard at his cafe the Copper Kettle in Stockbridge, then onto the leather shop in the city, but most of all at the Claremont Bar where he spent the last 10 years or so of his working career as Chief Cook, but not so much bottle washer as bottle emptier! Not to mention the naughty but nice antics himself and Paul got up to during their time entertaining on the Men Only nights. There was still plenty of life left to live and enjoy for Graeme and he would have certainly lived it to the full if given the chance but sadly illness prevailed and the wee man passed away on 1st Nov 2004. A great lad with a heart of gold and a million friends, your "corner" will be full of good fun and happy memories. To Gordon and staff at Habana, Peter and Brian at CCs, Brett for his fabulous eulogy and all who attended Morton Hall and the party later at Habana, thank you everyone for your kindness, loyalty and support to Graeme and his family. The best send off I've seen in a long time. Donations were kindly received and very much appreciated. One last message from Jools and Paul to David, Graeme's brother ..."where's them 2 voddy and cokes you owe us?". A son and brother to be proud of, a friend you'll never forget - we love you honey. Jools x Safe as HOOSES The Equality Network, along with Age Concern Scotland and Communities Scotland, has commissioned research on the housing needs of older LGBT people. So it's finally almost here: the time of year likely to cause more tantrums, lost tempers, overdrafts and general stress than any other. Religion has a lot to answer for! Bah, humbug. Personally I cannot wait for it all to be over, in addition to all the usual crap it means I am another year older and not a lot wiser. I mentioned this last month, but it bears repeating: Our old friend Syphilis is back in force, there has been a 40 fold increase in cases in Glasgow amongst gay men since 2001. The bad news is the effects can be absolutely devastating. The good news is that it is completely treatable if diagnosed early enough. But the only way to check if you have syphilis is to get tested. If you have any reason to believe you may be infected, get tested immediately. This is not a joke or somebody else's problem. Up to 18th Dec, a Fast Track service will be available: you can visit Phace Scotland on Fri evenings 6-9pm at 49 Bath Street. Clone Zone on Sat between 1-4pm or Steve Retson Project during their usual clinic times (Tel: 0141-211 8628 for further details). Results are available in 20 minutes. So get a clean bill of health for the festive season. As promised last month, I will be detailing some of the places in Glasgow where you can party for next to nothing over the festive season, starting with a special mention for the Hogmanay event at the GLC cafe/bar. This is a charity fund raiser for the Glasgow LGBT centre, all ticket money will go towards swelling the funds for a new improved LGBT Centre in Glasgow. Tickets are £5 including first drink free. Doors open 8pm-1am, you are advised to purchase a ticket in advance for this event, as capacity is 100. Tickets are available from the GLC cafe/bar. Before that, there will be a free party on Wed 22nd Dec, which just happens to be my birthday, throughout the LGBT centre and GLC cafe/bar. Kick off is 8pm and a buffet will be available from 9pm. Various forms of entertainment will be provided during the evening. For the record, any one daring to ask my age on this occasion will be fined a drink and told a lie! There is nothing special planned at the Court Bar, however if you fancy a quiet drink and a chat away from all the festive palaver give it a try. Best of all, it's free, so no surcharges and reasonably priced drinks. The Merchant Pride is under new ownership as of Mon 13th Dec. The new owner, John Wilson, intends to keep the venue as a gay bar and the name remains the same. Time will tell what form it will take. Over the festive season they plan to be open Noon-1am on Xmas Eve, there may be entertainment but nothing confirmed as we go to print. On Xmas Day they will be open 7pm-1am. Hogmanay they will be open Noon-1am. All of these events will be free on the door. At the Revolver Bar there is free entry on Xmas Eve, but you are advised to get there before 9pm. The doors close at 12.45am and kicking out time is 1am. They open their doors again on Xmas Day at 5pm. Hogmanay will be much the same as Xmas Eve, free entry and same opening hours. Also open Ne'er Day from 5pm. At the Waterloo on Sun 19th Dec there will be an evening of Karaoke presented by Andy - 9pm-1am - entry is free. On Xmas Eve there will be a DJ playing music from the 70's/80's/90's and dance music. They will be closed on Xmas Day. Hogmanay there will be a party from 8pm-1am. Entry will be free and there will be a whole variety of entertainment on the night. The next Pansexual BEDLAM Goth Club event is Sat 18th Dec although it usually takes place the last Sat of the month. The Doors open at 9pm-2am at the Qudos, Main Floor, Queen Margaret Union, Glasgow University, Hillhead, Glasgow. Bedlam Tickets usually available from: Osiris, 487 Great Western Road, Glasgow & Missing Records, Wellington Street, Glasgow and on the door on the night or E- mail: brian@cantara.demon.co.uk or gg@nakedtruth.co.uk or bedlamcorp@bedlam-corp.plus.com WWW: http://www.bedlamcorp.co.uk/ The Goat Club will be holding an event on Thu 23rd Dec with the usual mix of acoustic and semi-acoustic, solo performers, duos and groups. It's an eclectic mix of Soul, Blues, Rock and the odd comedy turn (when I say odd I mean really odd!). Downstairs at Archies Bar, 27 Waterloo Street. Doors open 8.30pm, first act 9pm, licensed until Midnight. Entry is £4 on the door. Usual line up includes five acts, so that is less than a quid a piece. You never know, you may see the new Elvis Costello or Joan Armatrading. Also available is the brand new CD - Goat Club Sessions Volume One, for the bargain price of £7.50 which includes performances by Soulweaver, Lynsy Kelly, Taylor McFie and Lee Brittain. For more info check out http://www.goatclub.net/ Along with specific club nights are of course the usual suspects offering a variety of experiences from the traditional pubs like the Victoria Bar on the Bridgegait, who offer a warm atmosphere and a decent pint of real ale, to the hot sweaty dance clubs like the Cube on Queen Street, on a Mon and Tue night for those who just do not want the weekend to end. For those of you looking for something to do during the day, there is of course the CCA or the Tron Theatre. On the other hand, maybe you fancy dropping into the LGBT Centre at 11 Dixon Street and whiling a few hours away on a cup of coffee in the GLC café/bar. Whatever you fancy, check out the listings page at the back for further details. Most of us have made it through another year, However, spare a wee moment for all those we have lost and all those who have lost someone close to them. Maybe you could give them a call or send a card or maybe even invite them to a party or meet for coffee. Sometimes the greatest gift can be letting someone know that they are not alone during this festive season. Alas, we have come to the end of yet another gallivant through the heady stuff that is the Glasgow Gay scene. So until next time. Remember folks whatever you find to do: be safe. May the best of your past, be the worst of your future. Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year! Angharad E-mail: angharad@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- EDINBURGH SCENE =============== Well here we are in the merry month of December and it is almost Xmas time - the season of good will when friends come together and help each other out - yeah right, like that is going to happen on the gay scene... Lots on however in all the venues, I shall try to mention them all but I have no doubt in my mind that I will get moaned at for missing someone out and if I do don't bother approaching me in the street or in a venue as well I really don't give a fuck (And you look so butch. Ed) - you want info in the mag then E-mail it or send a hard copy to the magazine. Habana has an extended licence until the 3rd of January. A big clap of the hands to Habana who raised over £400 for Waverley Care on Sun 28th Nov. The new cocktail menu is available on Mon Nights and seems to be going down a treat - all cocktails are roughly £3. Don't forget that special offers run in the bar daily but the majority will run Mon-Wed 9pm-1am. Door staff are now on the door of Habana at the weekend. Opening hours over the Xmas period are as follows: Xmas Day - Closed, Boxing Day 7pm-3am, Hogmanay usual Noon-3am and Ne'er Day 7pm-3am. Boxing Day has various goings on including Samantha Small hosting the night's capers, she will also be hosting the Hogmanay Bash. I also have to say that if you are a lover of Magners like me you won't get it any cheaper than Habana at £2.35 - the cheapest on the gay scene. Down at Planet Out, DJs will be on the decks 6 days a week. The Monday Club seems to be getting busier and busier with drink prices at £1.50 and no entry fee. Promos run from Tue-Fri 4-8pm and Sun 2-8pm with various drinks at £1.75. DJ Michelle will be the top DJ on the decks on a Thu night. Planet is officially open from four in the afternoon and 2pm on Sat and Sun. Xmas Eve and Hogmanay - the opening hours will be 7pm-3am. Taste, Edinburgh's original and longest running gay-friendly club night, brings together like-minded people who enjoy a club environment free from hassle and bad attitudes and for whom sexuality is not an issue. Any tickets left will be sold for £20 on the door A massive thanks to all those at the Regent Bar who helped raise over £700 at their St Andrew's Night/ World AIDS Day event. They will be closed on Xmas Day but will open again on Boxing Day. Look out, over the next few months, for all the straight (and not so straight) Campaign For Real Ale members who will be "mystery shopping" there - the pub is on the local CAMRA Branch's "hit list" and members are being encouraged to sample some ale before they vote early next year on the pubs to be included in the next Good Beer Guide. I was 'lucky' to snatch a free ticket for the Calvin Klein launch in the new premises on Multrees Walk beside Harvey Nichols - wish I hadn't wasted my time, full of pooves living in sin with their flexible friends, the champagne was crap and the mince pies tasted like they were left over from Harvey Nichols Xmas lunch last year. Remember, anything in the Calvin Klein shop can probably be bought half price in TK Maxx at Meadowbank. Last month, I also mentioned the saunat (my much travelled, over cultured and soap dodging editor tells me that this is the plural of sauna), but suprise, suprise, got some details wrong! Big apologies to the Number 18 Sauna. In these cold winter months you are likely to freeze your wee willie off trolling - so, if you want to hit the saunat, check out the adverts or the listings at the back of the mag. Finally, a very large apology to Edward Bell for our frequent neglect to acknowledge his photies what grace our pages de temps en temps. Contact him directly with your offers for the negatives of the ones this pretend family magazine has reluctantly felt unable to print! I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Xmas and all the luck and happiness for 2005. Wee Alan E-mail: weealan@drink.demon.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- NUNSENSE ======== The Convent of Dunn Eideann will be reaching out to support young men in our LGBT community, here in Edinburgh, and any actively-seeking fun-loving man who comes among us will be blessed with our traditional festive offering, the Sister Health Pack or Festive Frolics Pack, as we are calling it this year. (However, just because you don't have the good sense to live in Edinburgh, don't for a moment think that Sister Athletica will be happy with you shagging without a condom - she'll even bless you and manifest in your defence if you have to break into your local chemists for emergency supplies!). This year's pack is being funded by those hard working lads and lassies, and throughly good eggs, at the Lothian Gay and Lesbian Switchboard for which we convey your thanks and our blessings and heartfelt wish that this year's pack will make it a safer festive time for you. With or without the blessing of a Sister Health Pack, we hope you'll avoid many of the pitfalls that could make January, and beyond, a trying time. Here are a few suggestions to make your festive frolics memorable for the right reasons. CONDOM: A condom, used for either anal and oral sex, will 'greatly reduce' the chance of becoming infected with any of the 57 STI's out there. Why not check out this website which can be fun and educational: http://www.playingsafely.co.uk/12stisofchristmas/12-STIs.html To continue, Be careful how you roll on the condom, just as in opening the packaging, avoid tearing with teeth, finger nails or jewellery. LUBE: Lube gives extra protection during foreplay and prevents abrasions (redness, soreness even scratching/breaking skin) and so reduces the risk of infections. If it does not look as if you are going to get the chance to put to its legitimate use then it can serve as an emergency hair gel. Looking good for yet another night until Mr Right comes along. BOTTLE: Once again we ask you to be aware of not just your surroundings but your drink too. Sadly, Edinburgh and Lothian Police have on record serious crimes committed against our community (mostly gay) men in the Lothians involving a gang of 'date rapists'. Please be aware of who is near your drink at all times, or offers of drink which you did not see poured by the bar staff. The police say the date rape drug GHB (also known as liquid Ecstasy) is widely used by date rapists. They target men, perceived to be gay, alone and approachable. This crime is not just found in bars, so be aware of this issue should you be going home with that tall, dark and handsome stranger and let someone behind the bar, or a friendly aquaintance know where you are off to. KEEPING IT COOL- AND REAL: Because of the last item, now is the time to think about you being you. About enjoying the festivities but staying in control of the action. We approach a season renowned as much for its superficiality as its sincerity. You might feel pressure to waive your hard held beliefs about issues such as the unacceptability of unprotected sex, drugs and aggression in the face of new friends and new values. You alone are the keeper of your soul and your conscience and as such will have to come to terms with the consequences of the actions you took to please, or appease, the crowd. Be yourself, for one who can live with themself is a one who is at peace with the world. We hope this year's Sister Health Pack will help you in some way to keep both the faith of the Safer Sex message and the friends with which you 'may' want to share so much. If you are unable to collect your Sister Health Pack from us as we go around all the gay venues this Xmas Eve you lads may wish to consider 'getting it' regularly from an equally reliable but not quite as dress conscious source. Yes, why not get it, or should I say them, regularly from Healthy Gay Scotland - WWW: http://www.healthygayscotland.com/ - these guys will send you condoms and lubes by post in a plain wrapper to your home address. To 'ALL' members of our LGBT community throughout the world and beyond, may I offer festive blessings on behalf of 'All' members of the Convent of Dunn Eideann. Sister Athletica de la Bain OPI E-mail: sisterathletica@drink.demon.co.uk WWW: http://www.thesisters.org.uk/ --------------------------------------------------------------- DUNDEE SCENE ============ Hello, everybody! Once again, silly season is just about upon us, and the various pubs and clubs of the city are getting busy with festive revellers. Out currently has its hours extended by an hour on Fri and Sat which will, I believe, include Xmas and New Years days. The regular fun and frolics are on offer here, Wkd Wednesday's £3 for two Wkd's in Out and Brooklyn's doing double house vodkas for £2. Also the usual mix of great music and karaoke, and the possibility of some more big acts appearing in the coming weeks. More details on opening times and events can be found at the venues. Charlie's Bar will be open 6pm-1am on the Xmas Day and Boxing day, the usual 11am-Midnight until the 31st when it's open to 1am, then closed on the 1st of Jan and open 6pm-Midnight on the 2nd before returning back to normal hours. The guys are expecting it to be busy and doors will close when the place is full, so it is recommended that you get along early to avoid having to hang around outside in the cold. The Xmas quiz special held at the beginning of Dec went extremely well with lots of prizes given to the participating teams. There will not be a quiz in Jan, but it will return again on Tue the 8th of Feb. Diversitay will hold their next icebreaker evening at 8.30pm on Wed 22nd of Dec. The venue is still to be decided, exact details can be confirmed by calling the group on Dundee (01382) 202620 on Mon 7-10pm. One of the first gay blessings that I've heard (at least in the local area) was carried out in Nov. Congratulations to Paul and Colin, who wish to pass on their thanks to everyone who helped out with the event, the staff at the City Function Suite and owner Brian. Right I'm off to decorate the tree, Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year, folks! Chris Email: courier_chris@yahoo.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- ABERDEEN SCENE ============== Hi there, here is a festive round up of what's happening North of anywhere this month. PHACE Scotland, Grampian finally has a moving date! They move on Mon 20th Dec from Justice Mill Lane to their new premises at 11 Waverley Place, Aberdeen. Both offices will continue to be open during the move and they hope to be fully operational at the new premises just after the New Year. Please take the opportunity to visit the new offices which have full wheelchair access and enjoy using the space. It's hoped that the move will help them provide a better quality and safer service for people wishing to come in for information and supplies of condoms and lube. New dates for the groups organised by PHACE will be announced once they are settled. It has been yet another busy year for the Grampian office and Mark Thomson would like to thank everyone who has accessed services, groups, raised funds, supported and volunteered for PHACE Scotland over the last year. Mark wishes everyone a very Merry Xmas, a Happy and Safe New Year and looks forward to seeing you at 11 Waverley Place in the New Year. For the moment continue to use their existing phone number Aberdeen (01224) 587166 as this will be forwarded to their new premises. Mark has had a talk with the bosses at Grampian Police after they received a number of complaints about increased police activity in the Riverside Drive and Duthie Park area of the city. The police have said that due to the amount of vandalism to the Winter Gardens and reported thefts from cars in the lower car park they had a concentrated two-week long blitz on the area. The Assistant Chief Constable, Pat Shearer said that they apologise to anyone who was stopped and questioned but also stated that the police have to respond to complaints and unfortunately that some conflict in timing of the police operations may occur. The police are also there to ensure that the area is a safe place for everyone and that includes the men who use the area at night. Due to funding cuts from NHS Grampian, PHACE have had to reduce the 'Get Rubbered' Condoms by Post Scheme service to those accessing condoms by post in Aberdeen City. However, if you have been informed that your participation has been withdrawn but would like to remain on the scheme please contact the offices on the above number and they will look at each individual case to see if they can reinstate the service to you. They also wish to hear from people about why they find the service valuable and they will use the information to assist in trying to secure new funding. They hope that this is only a temporary withdrawal of the 'Get Rubbered' scheme in the area, but they will keep you informed of any progress. Free condoms and lube can be accessed from the following venues and services: PHACE Scotland at our new 11 Waverley Place offices, Indigo at O'Henry's in the Adelphi, Wellmans Sauna at 21-23 Justice Mill Lane, GUM Clinic at Woolmanhill Hospital, Square 13 at Golden Square, NHS Grampian Health Points at the Denburn Medical Centre and Aberdeen Market (when it opens) and also by post from Healthy Gay Scotland's website at http://www.healthygayscotland.com World Aids Day was marked by a couple of events in Aberdeen. The week started off on Mon 29th Nov with a Civic Reception hosted by Aberdeen City Council at the Maritime Museum with Leader of the Council Kate Dean stepping in for Lord Provost John Reynolds. On Wed 1st and Thu 2nd Dec, services to celebrate and commemorate those partners, friends and family who are infected and affected by HIV/AIDS were held in the Mitchell Hall in Aberdeen. They featured a performance of Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens and the two-night run of the show raised over £400 for groups and agencies who work with HIV/AIDS and multi ethnic people in Grampian. PHACE Scotland, Aberdeen Cares Drama Company and the Grampian World AIDS Day Committee wish to thank everyone who took part as cast, singers, musicians, crew and volunteers for their hard work and effort to bring this to the stage. A special thanks are due to Paul Hudson as Director (currently up to his ankles in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs for HMT at Hilton) and to Leslie Hay for his co-ordinating role. They would also like to pass on their thanks to everyone who came along to support the event raising awareness of HIV/AIDS in Grampian. What I saw of the performance on the Wed was good, but it is my belief that they could have been better advertised to justify all the hard work and effort put in to them. Bar Indigo on the Adelphi, open 7 nights a week, are currently the only gay club in the city (a Welsh accent helps) and have lined up a couple of party nights on Xmas Eve and Hogmanay. Look out for posters in the venue nearer the time. On Thu nights, pick up a party pack for entry to Sun nights where games and competitions can win you some wonderful prizes. Wellman's Health Suite have had a successful year and would like to wish all their customers a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. They will be closed on Sat 25th and Sun 26th Dec and Sat 1st and Sun 2nd Jan. It only remains for me to say have a great festive season and a peaceful New Year. Tivoli E-mail: Tivoli_abdn@yahoo.co.uk --------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTTISH MEDIA MONITOR ====================== Garry Otton and the Responsibilities of Being Liberal They have privileged access to Parliament. They skew the highest court in the land to pursue their agenda; they recruit cronies in our media and trumpet their demands over they way we must conduct ourselves on almost every facet of our lives. So how come media whore, Mrs Katie Grant was whinging that "Christian belief has become something to hide in 'free' Britain". She was having a laugh, surely? She moaned in The Scotsman: "...Religion is now thought of as being rather like leprosy, a horrible disease from which those afflicted should be rescued and cured". Is it? Good. Then my work here is done! Mrs Grant cast her ever scornful eyes over "Godless liberalism, the new opium of the masses", blaming it for "family breakdown, sexual disease among the young, teenage pregnancy, the collapse of self-respect and dignity, yob culture and, above all, a new kind of sanctimonious intolerance among politicians for anybody expressing views, particularly religious views, that actually draw clear lines". Now what 'clear lines' are we talking about here? The ones drawn in the sky as militant Islamists flew toward the World Trade Centre; the men who marched to their deaths in Christian crusades; modern-day, sanctimonious religious dignitaries, marching to the tune of prejudice or Mrs Grant's, thumping her right-wing messages in Times New Roman across the pages of another paper? "Nowadays, social liberalism means cheerless totalitarianism. Ban, ban, ban, the liberals cry, as they noisily air personal dislikes and turn them into law, making pariahs out of smokers, hunters, those who shake the salt cellar too hard, and soon those who shoot and anybody else who doesn't conform to the rigid liberal agenda as well". 'Reckless liberalism' is a new one on me! Mrs Grant added: "...Religion has only itself to blame. Too many people have declared God to be on their side only to wreak havoc in His name. But most people of faith have developed more enlightened frames of mind and want to worship and let worship, live and let live". Yes, they do. And most shun their militant leaders who claim to speak on behalf of them. But, back in her strident, militant fashion she declared: "Catholics who rejected the flip-flop liberalism of John Kerry stood up and were counted". This was being neither fair nor compassionate to liberalism. With greater opportunities come greater responsibilities. Of course liberals would defend your right to smoke, but not if you cannot respect the rights of those around you to breath clean air and walk the streets free from your litter. It is the rights of corporate companies who load our foods with salt and sugars that are being contested here, not the citizens who rattle the salt cellar. And of course liberals defend and respect your right to worship as long as you don't hijack worship for political gain and deny others their right to be treated equally. And of course liberals deny toffs the right to tear animals to pieces (of course she had to try and slip that one in)! Mrs Grant is a Catholic propagandist who spends most of her time leaning on language; twisting it to her own advantage. Look at 'political correctness'. How did that ever come about? Its opposite is 'political incorrectness' or sleaze, but somehow, the right wing have succeeded in getting us all to mouth its poison without blinking. 'Political correctness', with its eighties epitaph of 'hatchet-faced black lesbians enjoying self-defence classes at council tax payers expense' is now a phrase as common and ugly as quilted nighties. What's next? Mrs Grant turned to abstinence. "When did abstinence become a derogatory, judgmental word", she begged in The Scotsman. (Well, when religionist-backed right-wing governments ploughed millions into its promotion, I suppose)! The first step is to suggest that us naughty liberals want to step on the toes of those who choose abstinence. No one has said that 'abstaining' from sex is ever bad. It is a choice like any other. And like any other, it deserves to be an informed one, not a result of fear or ignorance. Nor is it a contraceptive to protect against what Mrs Grant described as, "a quick 'shag', a horrible word but one that just about describes what most teenage sexual encounters have become". Are they? Or are they complex manoeuvres, a potent cocktail of passion, romantic love, fanciful ambition, fumbling inroads in a search for security, surety and commitment with a partner in an uncertain world. Thankfully, Mrs Grant's jaundiced views bear little relation to most people's sexual experiences. The 'quick shags', when they occur, are by no means confined to teenagers and are in any case a part of our own forbidding sexual culture that banishes sexual romance, experimentation and longevity along with the poetry of the troubadours. Mrs Grant insisted: "A positive mention of abstinence also reassures a teenage girl - or boy - buffeted about by the remorseless 24/7 onslaught of sexual information and advertisements..." I was wondering where she came up with that one, but then I remembered that the Catholic propaganda, promoted by Vatican cronies like Mrs Grant, dictate that the reason why Scotland has one of the highest teenage pregnancy levels in the western world is because our liberal sex education has failed. Snag is - no thanks to religion - we've never had a liberal education! I left school knowing more about the mating habits of frogs than the art of human sexuality. And gay sex? Oh, you can stick that right up your back-burner! The flawed logic of 'abstinence' has been turning up in the most unlikely places. Taking a sharp downturn in quality of late, The Sunday Herald had Liam McDougall fielding quotes from, amongst others, devoted Christian, Dr Trevor Stammers, a trustee of the Family Education Trust, "an independent think-tank" to promote abstinence. (The week before, readers endured Cardinal Keith O'Brien gnawing at our brains with his warped reasoning why we should celebrate the patron saint of St Andrew with a day off on 30th Nov in Scotland! Oh, please! Isn't it bad enough we have to endure two weeks off during the darkest, coldest time of the year at the behest of religion? If Scotland deserves a holiday, it should be in the short summer)! (You're English, Garry. You wouldn't understand. Ed.). But I digress... Abstinence is not a cure- all for a surge in sexually transmitted infections. It is a result of ignorance, drunkenness and more efficient notification and treatment of STIs. The results of a better sex education have been staring us in the face for years from our neighbours in Sweden, Denmark and Holland... Well, if abstinence can't win, Mrs Grant, why not try threats? "And by the way, maybe I could also remind our law- makers, who seem to have forgotten, that teenage sex, at least if you are under 16, is wrong". That's just what we want to encourage, isn't it? The fostering of guilt and the criminalisation of young people as they approach that magical age when the doors fling open and the drawbridge is raised. But keep rolling out the propaganda. The woman with the wagging finger insisted, in the USA, "we should surely welcome the study by Peter Bearman of Columbia University and Hannah Bruckner of Yale, who found that teenagers making virginity pledges delayed the onset of sexual activity by an average of a year and a half and had fewer sexual partners. How on earth can that be a bad thing?" Well, it can be a bad thing when teenagers break those abstinence pledges and become statistically more likely to go on to have unsafe sex for starters! Oh, didn't she mention that? So how about a good scare story then? Like Linda Blair ejaculating green puke, Mrs Grant spat: "The other day, a taxi driver told me that when on night shift he no longer stops to check if girls sprawled on the roadside, their legs spread wide, are all right. He's fed up of being sprayed with vomit and abuse by both them and their lover-of-the-second". She insisted: "We do not have to live in the world of cheap sex followed by pills or abortions. That world may have taken a powerful will and imagination, a difference could be made... Come on, you witless MSPs, at least give it a go". Yes, indeed. Come on, let's have an imaginative and passionate sex education that starts treating sex like the art it truly is. There's more to sex than suck and fuck images of seventies gay porn videos or the airbrushed pink of an exposed glans on a limp dick in a school textbook. But when is it right to have sex? Sometimes, research doesn't always come up with what we want to hear. In which case, we either take it on the chin; let it broaden our knowledge of a given subject, or, we behave like The Scottish Daily Mail. We shut down our sense of reasoning, condemn the research outright, rustle up various off-the-peg quotes in support of our agenda and call Dr Richard Yuill a charlatan. The next thing we do is strip the researcher of every shred of integrity and don't stop until the tabloid-reading vigilantes are hammering on his door. Mail Reporter Maureen Culley declared "outcry as man who befriended pædophiles picks up academic award". Apparently, "fury erupted" after Glasgow University awarded Yuill - after years of research - a PhD in Sociology. Since the University will be restricting access to the research for five years, it should come as no surprise who was fuelling the 'outrage'! Make no mistake; these restrictions that had to be imposed on important academic work are a direct result of our media. Culley reminded us Yuill was "dogged by controversy", alluding to previous attempts by controversial tabloid journalist Marcello Mega to discredit his research in another tabloid. It was not difficult to manufacture the 'fury' after a few phone calls to those working with survivors of abuse. In truth, what Dr Yuill had offered was hardly new. Dutch research by Sandford had already produced research that declared not all cases of cross-generational sex have produced evidence of harm. Yuill's research did not find all intergenerational experiences healthy, but it did challenge the current age of consent set at 16 and supported those who believe that the age a young person is mature enough to consent to sex can be variable. Have we not been here before? Was it not fascists who burnt academic research outside the Magnus Hirschfeld Institute in Berlin because it was deemed too controversial? Anne Houston, director of Childline Scotland stepped into the report to add: "Anything in the public domain which could be used as an 'excuse' by abusers to persuade children that sex between an adult and child is 'normal' is dangerous". The University, who had rigorously examined Dr Yuill's research both internally and externally, stood by him while newspapers like The Herald only sought academic critics (one churned out the mantra that the research could fall in the wrong hands and the other wanted more restrictions on this type of research). There is no more excuse for abusing children, as there is for censoring valid research that increases our understanding of what is, in this country, a highly charged subject claimed by the media as its own. Anne Houston added: "Children tell ChildLine that various materials which appear to show that sex between an adult and a child is acceptable are used in grooming a child to be abused". (Like Yuill's academic tome will be hiding on the coffee table under Celtic View and well-thumbed copies of Big Boobies). Mail reporter, Ms Culley was not choosing her words very carefully. She warned that Yuill "was previously struck off the teaching register after 'inappropriate horseplay' with teenage boys" which rather concealed the fact that he was, in fact, struck off after some lads were caught smoking pot at a party back at Yuill's place. 'Outrage' takes many guises in the media. It is almost totally manufactured by the journalists, desperate to make a wage in a paper that hires and fires on circulation figures. "DRUNK JESUS STORM" in The Sunday Mail is fairly typical. The "students shock play" at "Prince William's university" (he wasn't in it) portrayed Jesus as gay and the Virgin Mary "as an alcoholic". Their rendition of the play 'Corpus Christi' would have gone unnoticed had The Sunday Mail not contacted local religionists - not too shy to admit to being Christians - to pour out their 'outrage'. Stephen Green of Christian Voice called the play "blasphemous hate-filled mockery" and told The Daily Record "portraying Jesus as a homosexual is an insult to our saviour. We demand respect for the Christian faith". The Rev Canon Dr Robert Gillies of St Andrews Church, Queen's Gardens told The Sunday Mail's Himaya Quasem: "There is no evidence to suggest that Jesus Christ was homosexual..." Which just goes to show you can't trust a man of the cloth. I'd like to know what evidence religionists have that Jesus was 'straight'? As I understand it, Jeez - who pointed out that marriage between a man and a woman wasn't for everyone - could barely keep his hands from sliding down his 'favourite', disciple, John's pants! He must've mentioned him - the one he loved - eight times in his gospel. Stagecoach boss, Brian Souter who funded Scotland's Keep the Clause militant campaign against the 'promotion' of homosexuality has seen a 15% hike in his company's profits. Bruce Waddell, former editor of The Scottish Sun, a paper that supported the campaign, is now editor of The Daily Record, which also did. The Record reported how, "tycoon drives bus firm on the road to glory", adding: "...His success was down to his strategy of getting back to basics" to turn his ailing firm round. He was reported saying: "...We had less meetings and less reports and listened to what people wanted us to do". The shares of Stagecoach climbed 13% after the firm reported pre-tax profits for the half-year of £69.2million, almost £10 million more then a year ago. His business interests in the USA have also seen something of an upturn. The way The Scottish Daily Mail marked World AIDS Day, (a day late) using the perfect person to be living with AIDS: "Cathy Crawford, 53, of Edinburgh, is not the face of HIV that many people would expect. She is neither a drug addict nor gay and has not been promiscuous". Homophobic, Catholic columnist Gerald Warner swiping at the United Nations in Scotland on Sunday: "Not long ago, two UN agencies called for the criminalisation of those who criticise the homosexual lifestyle ('Pope John Paul II? You're nicked, sunshine!') Since such a law would criminalise a billion Catholics and almost as many Muslims, the prison-building programme that it would necessitate would dwarf all the UN's previous construction follies... Can we find no better beneficiary for our money?" Fortunately, only a small number of those 'billion Catholics' think like the Pope and Mr Warner. Enough to make Glasgow City Council chuck in the towel? "Birmingham-based PoleCats, wants to take pole dancing into mainstream gyms in Scotland... A spokeswoman for Fitness First said demand had been so high for the classes, which also includes erotic dancing, that more were now being made available". (The Herald). --------------------------------------------------------------- INTERNATIONAL ============= By Rex Wockner Argentines March Some 10,000 people marched in Buenos Aires' 13th gay-pride parade last month. "It was much more fun than I would have ever thought," said first-timer Mariano Lago, 27. "We carried the big big big pride flag for a while, then went to dance along this truck all over Avenida de Mayo." The parade's theme was "All of society for the right to diversity —civil unions for the whole country." Two hundred antigays protested in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral. "We have nothing against them and we didn't come to attack them, but we're not going to let them take the Catholic Church," one of the protesters told the daily newspaper Clarín. During last year's parade the cathedral was spray-painted with graffiti reading "Church = dictatorship", "Rapist priests" and "Nazi priests." The vandals chanted, "Here is the repression of the Holy Inquisition." To date, civil unions have been enacted only in Buenos Aires and in Río Negro province. Fisting ad rejected Global Television in Canada's British Columbia has rejected a public-service announcement urging men to get checked for prostate cancer. The ad, submitted by Vancouver General Hospital's Prostate Centre, reportedly shows a doctor inserting his arm into a man's anus and pulling out a ticking time bomb. "It is a little over the top, especially the first time you see it," the centre's director, Dr. Larry Goldenberg, acknowledged. "The concept was [to] grab people's attention. They're not going to hit the station changer on the remote when this comes on." A Global spokesman called the ad "too over the top". Canadian Supremes OK same-sex marriage Asked for its thoughts on the matter by the federal government, Canada's Supreme Court has declared unanimously that there are no obstacles to nationwide legalisation of full same-sex civil marriage. "Several centuries ago it would have been understood that marriage should be available only to opposite-sex couples," the court wrote. "The recognition of same-sex marriage in several Canadian jurisdictions as well as two European countries belies the assertion that the same is true today. ... Our constitution is a living tree which, by way of progressive interpretation, accommodates and addresses the realities of modern life." In response to the ruling, the government said it will introduce a same-sex marriage bill in Parliament promptly. It is expected that the measure will pass. "We will move ahead ... with all deliberate speed to introduce legislation which will extend civil marriage to gays and lesbians," said Justice Minister Irwin Cotler. "Fundamentally it comes down to equality rights," said Prime Minister Paul Martin. "I do not believe you can have two classes of citizens." Eighty-six per cent of Canadians already live in places where courts have legalised same-sex marriage: British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Québec and the Yukon Territory. Federal action will extend same-sex marriage rights to the other 14 per cent of the population in Alberta, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Prince Edward Island. The Supreme Court also said that churches should not be forced to marry same-sex couples. "State compulsion on religious officials to perform same-sex marriages contrary to their religious beliefs would violate ... the [C]harter [of Rights and Freedoms]," the court said. Full same-sex marriage also is available in Belgium, the Netherlands and Massachusetts. Numerous nations grant same-sex couples some, most or all the rights of marriage under registered-partnership or civil-union laws. New Zealand passes civil-unions law New Zealand's Parliament has passed a civil-unions law for gay and straight couples by a vote of 65 to 55. Registered couples will received the same rights and responsibilities as married people. Recent polling showed that New Zealanders opposed recognising gay relationships by a margin of three to one. The measure takes effect in April. Partner bill passes Polish Senate A bill granting registered same-sex couples some marriage rights has passed Poland's Senate by a vote of 38-23 with 15 abstentions. It now moves to the Sejm, the lower house of Parliament, where it may face strong opposition, says correspondent Slawek Starosta. The measure would grant gay couples spousal rights in areas such as taxes, hospital visitation and inheritance. A spokesman for the Polish Roman Catholic hierarchy said the measure is unconstitutional because Poland's Constitution defines marriage as between a man and a woman. WWW: http://wockner.com/ --------------------------------------------------------------- BOOKS ===== Book reviews by Dirk Kriete Alexander the Fabulous By Michael Alvear Published by Alyson £9.99 If you've just been to the cinema to watch Oliver Stone's latest offering then this book will give you a humorous queer perspective on this great figure from ancient history. Full of tantrums, tiaras, hissy-fits and heroic deeds, this must be the most enjoyable alternative biography of this great ruler. Apart from showing the man that united the known world with a common language and his military tactics, through this book you're allowed a glimpse into the life of the real man. And by the looks of it, he was hot, his boyfriends were hotter and I'm sure many of the Greek historians that have objected to the gay undertones in the movie would be furious if ever they get their hands on this little number. Not just is Alexander portrayed as a real queen complete with hissy-fits that would stun the most accomplished drama queen, but also delves into his tendencies to sulk, his vanity and his petulance. This is a brilliant book to provide an alternative to the dry historical facts portrayed by other biographies. Divine Filth By George Bataille Published by Creation £8.99 Divine Filth is a collection of erotic prose and scatological fragments by the French seminal surrealist George Bataille. The prose section comprises two erogenous evocations of the post-modern psyche. "Filthy" describes a descent into the scum and urine doused underworld of London's nightlife, where sexual power opens old wounds; while "Divinity" involves a masturbatory madamoiselle, whip-bearing servants, drinking to oblivion, and a masked madam married to the Lord of Excess. The fragmentary second section is taken straight from Bataille's private notebooks. I found this book hard going to say the least, a bit like a literary equivalent of a Dali painting, surreal and strange and full of half empty pages. Some people consider this writer to be one of the most important of the century; I prefer something with a plot and a storyline. The Bush Junta Edited by Gary Groth & Mack White Published by Fantagraphics £11.99 Some of the world's foremost cartoonists take on George W. Bush in this fact- based and brilliantly researched work of comic book journalism, edited by Gary Groth and Mack White. It chronicles the rise of the Bush dynasty, with its Nazi connections, its links to the CIA and the Mafia and to the Gulf War. It also explores the electoral fraud of 2000, 9-11 and the Iraq War. Also included are profiles of the key players in the current administration: a rogue's galley including Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, John Ashcroft, Condoleeza Rice and Karl Rove. The Bush Junta distils all the known facts of the regime's criminality in an accurate, artistically stylish and utterly hilarious collection. Contributors include Ted Rall, Steve Brodner, Seth Tobocman, Lloyd Dangle,Peter Kuper, Carol Swain, Spain Rodriguez, Ted Jouflas and Ethan Persoff. This is an excellent book to give you some humorously presented background knowledge to the corruption and conspiracies at the top of the US Government. Queer Facts By Michelle Baker & Stephen Tropiano Published by Arcane £9.99 Intelligent, cultured, brash, wild and witty: Queer Facts has pulled off a pink jacket and pink pages with great style. Who was the first openly gay politician elected to office? The first lesbian soap character? What's the most successful gay novel of all time? And just why did The Village People think it was 'fun to stay at the YMCA'? This book's got the world on a string, sitting on a rainbow: politics, showbiz, literature, sport, the media and ancient history all jostle for space in its pages. Queer Facts celebrates those men and women whose lives helped to make homosexuality an acceptable part of society. Did you know that Edith Eyde established the world's first lesbian newsletter, "Vice Versa", in 1947 under the pseudonym of Lisa Ben, or that Cole Porter, Andy Warhol and Leonard Bernstein all appeared on US postage stamps? Or that Margaret Roff became the UK's first openly homosexual mayor? For the answers to those questions or for a brilliant present for trivia obsessed friends you just have to get this book. Best Gay Erotica 2005 Edited by Richard Labonté Published by Cleis Press £9.99 Well, what to say about this book? It is not a great literary achievement, but there again it doesn't pretend to be that, it is rather one of the better one handed reads you can find on the market today. It's the tenth anniversary edition of this erotica series and it has not got boring and names like Greg Herren, Ian Philips and Greg Wharton bear witness to that fact. Bear Lust Edited by Ron Suresha Published by Alyson £11.99 Here's the second book in this month's collection I consider to be a superior one handed read. It's perfect for those of us who like their men big, strong and hairy. Again not a great literary experiences, but lack of that is made up by other experiences! Cowboys, Roman warriors, and even a Norse god are some of the horny, hairy, beefy guys you will encounter in this new collection of erotic fiction. With writers such as Jeff Mann, R. E. Neu, Hank Edwards and Simon Sheppard this is a real delight for those that like them rough and ready and hairy as hell. --------------------------------------------------------------- FILMS ===== Film reviews by Malcolm Epstein The New Year blockbuster Alexander is likely to bring wide eyed wonder from audiences for many mixed reasons. He thought it was a good idea to conquer the world on a seven-year safari that kept his army away from their family which won't be understood by many in this day and age. The plus points are a vast budget and Colin Farrell in the lead as the bisexual conqueror who is happy to kiss a man on the lips. With a running time of 175 minutes you might like to check with your local cinema the kind of food they will be selling to take in or whether you need to take your own. Vanity Fair (PG) show how a poverty stricken girl with the right looks and determination could scheme herself to success in early 19th century Britain. Taken from a William Makepeace Thackeray novel it has been impressively filmed by director Mira Nair with a brilliance you will love. Reese Witherspoon in the lead and the magnificent James Purefoy as her passion in life are worth your time. She ends up ruling the roost in India. Those of us not aware of the amazing work firemen do are reminded in Ladder 49 (12a) in the States where John Travolta leads a fire station team. Its views of exploding buildings are breath taking. Seeing this makes us realise firemen in this country should be earning far more. February sees the opening of two titles worth tracking down. Shall we Dance? (12a) has Richard Gere as a happily married man attracted to dance lessons when he realizes Jennifer Lopez is a local teacher. Susan Sarandon is the wife who is as amazed as the audience at his transformation. The Chorus is a little gem of a French movie about a music teacher who comes to a school of problem teenage boys and transforms their lives inspiring them to sing. Hollywood producers have been aware for years that the French have movie ideas worth buying and reshooting in America. French companies don't seem to realise if you have an attractive actor in the leading role that maximises your box office potential. Woody Allen has made the most original comedies in America in the last 30 years. The genius of his scriptwriting mind cannot be topped. But periodically he likes to prove he can make dramas which is not a good idea. In March Melinda and Melinda (12a) has writers sitting at a table discussing two contrasting lives of the same woman. I am waiting for Woody's next comedy. Current Releases The Phantom of the Opera (12a) will be appreciated far more if you first play the compact disc extensively. I did with the stage show in my virginal youth and realised music takes time to grow on you. The director wisely cast unknowns in the leads and the great attention to detail means this is the nearest we will ever get to Victorian France. The Aviator tells a section of the remarkable life of the wealthy Howard Hughes who made time to make a few films when he wasn't pioneering aeroplanes. Leonardo DiCaprio impresses in the lead and Cate Blanchett gives the best performance of her life as Katherine Hepburn. Jude Law should not have taken a miniscule part as Errol Flynn. Who ever is making his career choices for him? Being Julia (12a) has Annette Bening as a fêted stage star in London before the war married to Jeremy Irons with a teenage son who needs constant reminders she is still desirable. She finds it in the arms of a young American but recovers her equanimity when she finds he is also romancing a young actress in her play. How she copes with the situation is worth seeing. One of the most enjoyable films of the year. Anyone who has ever been unaware that Kevin Spacey is one of the most extraordinary minds in films today should see Beyond the Sea. It is the life story of Bobby Darin, one of the most respected popular singers of the fifties and sixties. Kevin wrote, directed and plays the lead performing the Darin songs in a way that has never happened before. I won't believe in the Oscars any more if he doesn't get a selection for this. DVD World It might take some believing that there are 450 active Sherlock Holmes societies - mostly in America and Japan. For many refuse to believe Holmes was a fictional detective and come to London to track down the sites of his cases. It cannot be any wonder these people will have to buy any films about the man and they will know all about the most memorable TV series with Jeremy Brett between 1984 and 1994. As well as the TV being repeated we now have on 2lst Feb an event that will bring his followers close to ecstasy. The Adventures and Return of Sherlock Holmes is on a 9-DVD stack, plus his Casebook and Memoirs is on a 7-DVD stack plus, for the totally obsessed a 16-disc box set - The Complete Collection of Sherlock Holmes. It is going to be a blissful New Year for some. Those of us with a passion for Agatha Christie must know that on 7th Feb, Granada Ventures are issuing four of the Miss Marple stories starring Geraldine McEwan. The Body in the Library, A Murder is Announced, Murder at the Vicarage and 4.50 from Paddington will have celebrity casts. Worth studying at your local store. --------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTSGAY VOICE FOR PERSONALS ============================ (We regret that this service is only available within the UK) To reply to ScotsGay Voice Ads, phone 09068 556613 (calls charged at 60p per minute) and use the number at the end of the ad.
