I have to admit that one practitioner of the art of playing pre-recorded loud popular noise to rooms full of drug fucked bunnies sounds very much like another to me, but I'm happy to put the record straight (so to speak). Habana are running a Tarts And Vicars evening on Sun 16th Apr. Hosted by Ms Samantha Swallows, it will feature the Dreaded Karaoke from 4-8pm followed by Cabaret from 9pm. There will be an Easter Bunny Raffle with all proceeds to Marie Curie Cancer Care and Gordon reminds me to remind you not to forget your egg. Down the hill, Planet Out is hosting the only Scottish heat of Drag Idol on Thu 20th Apr. This national competition was created to encourage new drag acts onto the scene. Drag Idol 2005 was a huge success and last year's winners are now performing up and down the country. Each heat winner will receive a trophy and will be invited to the semi-finals in London. The final will be held at Pride in Leicester Square on July 1st. Application forms are available from Planet Out. I noticed that for just 5 quid you can get a full bottle of wine, red, white or pink! This venue has been around for as long as anyone can remember and never seems to be quiet no matter what day or time you go into it! Just round the corner at Jamaica Street the Coco Club is running 'Cocomotion' on Thu nights. The door staff are pleasant, helpfull and welcoming. DJ Shazza Halliwell, who also does 'CC Blooms', 'Kremlin' and 'Cube', is on the decks and all drinks are a quid. As I'm sure we all know, the wrong DJ can kill any venue, no matter how well decorated it is, but I'm pleased to say that Shazza plays just the right mix of chart to dance to keep most if not all happy! You can even write out a 'request slip' to hand to her, if more places did this wee service there would be a lot less moans and groans! It's really not that hard to see why this club is picking up so quickly, its crisp, clean look and charming staff will draw people in again and again! Revolver has made an interesting offer to the LGBT business community, if you can put your 'info' into the form of a 'jpeg', Johnbear will put an ad on the big main screen of the bar! Animal's house (funk, pop with DJ Roo) and then Fashion (newwave, electro) are on alternative Sats in the bar and then we have 'Camp Classic's' on Sun afternoons. Revolver is still the bar to get tickets to the ever popular 'Burly' (how come Glasgow did not get a slave auction?) who now allow cowboys! Moda is looking for DJs, contact the duty manager. It still seems to be attracting a mixed crowed who drift to and from the Polo (which some are now calling 'The Lounge!') all drinks in Polo are 99p on Sun! The Lounge is looking for stewards and again it's the duty manager you need to speak to. So what about the drag and fag ban? Well at 'Utter Gutter' (Riverside Club, Fox Street) they are handing out 'Passes'. On 31st Mar there will be reduced entry to those who dress to impress! Just as 'Burly' has captured the imagination of one crowd, 'Utter Gutter' has done the same with another. Bennets has reduced its entry prices and has its Easter thing but I must say that these imaginative evenings really seem to do the trick! Drag or uniform it all seems to work and it does so well! A word or two now about the GLC Cafe. The 'sing song nights' are put down by those who see themselves as 'high brow' and yet they could not be more wrong! A great deal of hard work goes into these evenings and they are much enjoyed. I have an odd feeling they always will! The Cafe does have a community feel as young and old, men and women seem to mix with ease and where else can you get food on the scene! Now for something completely different: a wee bit of steam! We have three gay saunas in the city, but 'Relax Central' and 'Eros' are by far the busiest. A 'late night' is run by Eros every Sat untill 4am, the so called 'all nighters' may charge more but you get longer and it has become a kinda social event sporting all ages and sizes. In addition to the obvious, guys go to talk, eat and drink in so doing they have a good time, harming no one! Equality Network are having their conference on 20th May at The Arches (http://www.equality-network. org/) and, as usual, it will be an all-day conference with lunch! Criz E-mail: criz@drink.demon.co.uk The Glasgow Comedy Festival came to an end on the 25th, and there was a lot of gay and gay friendly comedy for people to see, with among others, yours truly. It is refreshing to see more gay comedians who are moving away from the more traditional camp comedy adopted by gay comics. Acts like Paul Synnah and Scott Agnew, who both had shows in the festival are giving us a fresh take on gay comedy that doesn’t rely entirely on "Ooooh Missus" jokes. Now don’t get me wrong, I have a deep and fond love for all things camp and nonsense, there will always be a big place in my heart for Kenneth Williams and Larry Grayson, but our sensibilities have changed. Society's views have changed. Gay comedians no longer need to be the innuendo laden court jester, and it’s good to see that some gay comics are recognising this. There is a definitely a feeling that people like to see gay acts pigeon holed and know what’s coming, so that there are no surprises and of course, it’s harder to see camp acts as sexual. Did anyone ever fantasise over Charles Hawtrey? When performing at comedy gigs, I don’t come out on stage until halfway through my act, and I’m always amazed to see the reaction it gets, the audience almost always sit back in perfect unison, and it always reminds me that most people make a hetero assumption about just about everyone unless you wear your sexuality like a label. So, its okay to still get your Julian and Sandy recordings out, its always bona to vada your dolly old eek, but try to seek out some of the 21st century gay comedy, it may just take you by surprise. Well LGBT Aberdeen seems to have opened its arms and whatever else to the newest bar on the scene. Cheerz opened last month and has been busy most weekends since. The weekends at Cheerz see Karaoke, Drag Queens, Pole Dancers and more. If you haven't been in yet, pop on down and join the gang. Just across the road and through the tunnel from Cheerz is Aberdeen's only gay club "Bar Indigo" which continues to be the place to go for a proper gay night out. More info soon on the club's refurb and events planned for summer, that's if it ever gets here! NUS and the RGU LGBT Group have been recently organising protests aimed at getting the awareness across that gay men cannot give blood. The slogan "please give blood because we can't" has been used to ask straight friends to donate in place of a gay man. Matthew Middler, LGBT officer for RGU, has been in the thick of it with protests at Blood Donor sessions at the Music Hall and various other locations.
