At ScotsGay, we go further. Bet you were all thinking that this issue would feature lots and lots of oral sex and something very suggestive on the cover. Well, you wuz wrang or a meringue? Instead, the perfect excuse for me to pop down to Musselburgh and have a 99 cone from the home of such things: Luca's. To be honest, the approach of this issue has exercised my mind for several months, and I had intended to do the obvious, but you have the once humourous Simon Fanshawe to blame for my change of heart. Ms Fanshawe thinks that we should all grow up a bit. So I have. Where I part company from him is in his Big Idea that we should all eschew the fucking about and settle down with a nice man. Not that he seems to have managed it. One of the dangers of Civil Partnerships which I have long warned about is the pressure that is going to be put on gays to "normalise" and become monogamous. Monogamy is held up as an ideal and anything else is a lesser thing which can be tolerated (just) but is really letting the side down now that we've got pseudo-marriage and can be just like the hetties. Now, apart from the fact that the hetties aren't really that monogamous (John "Two Jags/Shags/Hags" Prescott springs to mind), it just doesn't correspond to the reality in many of our lives. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with people who are monogamous - that's their life choice and, if it works for them, fine. But I do have a problem with monogamy being held up as something which is Good and to which we must all aspire. I've spent far too many hours "marriage counselling" both sides of a holed beneath the water relationship where one has found out that the other was "cheating" although I just happen to know that both sides have been banging like a shit house door outwith the confines of that primary relationship for many moons. And when you point out to the "wronged" partner that they were doing precisely the same thing but just hadn't been caught out, you get told "That's different". But it damned well isn't. What's missing in such relationships is honesty. And, to me, relationships are all about honesty - if you don't have that, what's the point? When Mark Oaten's wife discovered all about the Rent Boys and the shit, it must have come as somewhat of a shock. But, she's still with him - now she knows what the score is. But wouldn't it have been so much better if she'd known to begin with? I recall a fellow chorister of my youth who led a rampantly promiscuous gay lifestyle but was absolutely focussed on the idea that he was going to marry a dim but pleasant woman to keep up appearances and carry on the family line. He did. And it worked for twenty years. Until she found out. And it destroyed the unfortunate woman's life overnight. How much better it would have been had she known to begin with. The late actor, Denholm Elliot, seemed to manage it with a wife who knew precisely what he was up to and it certainly wasn't just her! These examples just happen to be of bisexuals in mixed relationships, but exactly the same applies to monosexuals. By being honest in a relationship, you can have the trust that allows you to say: "I will only do condomless sex with you". And that is *real* trust. But the other area where it is important to be honest is when it comes to acknowledging to others that you aren't monogamous. Tory grandee Alan Clark, who managed to shag three generations of woman from the same family at the same time, was totally honest about what he was up to. "Never deny it, Old Boy". If we don't deny it, there are no lies. If there are no lies, we can't be caught out. Just as we had to come out of the closet to allow us to achieve gay liberation and equality, us shaggers need to make sure that we stay out of the closet if monogamy is not to become the stifling norm. John Hein E-mail: john@scotsgay.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS ==== CENTRE MOVES FORWARD Glasgow LGBT Centre will be flitting from Dixon Street at the turn of the year. With thanks to the assistance of Glasgow City council, they have been successful in obtaining new premises in the Merchant City in Glasgow and 84 Bell Street will be their new home for the next twenty years! The premises do need a considerable amount of refurbishment and they are in the process of raising the predicted GBP600,000 that it will cost to bring the building up to scratch. Whilst they have submitted applications to various funding bodies, they will also be fundraising within the LGBT community, so look out for bodies wearing Centre T.Shirts and rattling cans when you are out on the scene. They will be organising events to raise cash and will also have collecting cans at the existing Centre in Dixon Street. Please give generously - this is your new Centre. The new Centre will allow new services to be offered in addition to the existing ones and there will hopefully be dedicated spaces for particular groups. The new building is on two floors (ground and basement) and will provide support for the community with the continued benefit of a social space where people can meet and relax. The community will be kept posted with details of fundraising progress, how much they need to raise on a rolling basis and when the new Centre will open. Nik and Gordon, the Centre's Co-chairs said, "Please feel free to visit the current Centre in Dixon Street for updates. We will also continue to keep you posted through the gay press and our website." "The Centre celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and it seems fitting somehow that we are now ready to move up a gear and give ourselves the building that we, as a community, deserve." "We would like to thank the community for the support and encouragement that we have received over the last decade and ask for that to continue by supporting our upcoming ceilidh with Switchboard, which celebrates their 30th and our 10th anniversaries." Pride The Pride Scotia (Glasgow) event will take place on Sat 24th Jun, and will depart from Blythswood Square at 12.30 pm - assembly at Noon. The march will end at Glasgow Green where there will be a community event. The Pride team need to recruit volunteers to act as stewards on the march and at the event on the Green afterwards. As usual, there is currently a desperate shortage of volunteers to do this job, but we just know that you will all throw yourselves into volunteering now that you know! Public meetings are held fortnightly and all community members, commercial organisations etc are welcome to attend. The next meeting is Tue 2nd May at 7pm at Glasgow LGBT Centre - we use the downstairs office in the foyer. Pride needs your support - on the march itself, as volunteers, stallholders, whatever. Be there on the day to celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of your community. Oh, and we need your dosh too - collecting cans are to be found in all of the bars on the Glasgow scene and we'll be visiting scene spaces dressed in our gorgeous yellow Pride Scotia T. Shirts to relieve you of your cash. See you there. The Pride Committee (Pic) He thinks Jesus loves him - we all think he's a cunt! Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice and long time opponent of rampant homosexuality, was to be seen providing the cabaret (along with his miniscule Band of Hope) out Band of Hope) outside the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh. The Good Christians were handing out leaflets protesting against the production of Jerry Springer - The Opera. Borders The Scottish Borders LGBT Barbeque will be held at Boleside picnic site,Galashiels, by the River Tweed (National Grid Reference NT 502 337, postcode TD1 3NU) from 2-5 pm on Sat 3rd June. Boleside is reached by car from the mini-roundabout at the bottom of Tweed Road and Winston Road, near Heriot Watt University (NT 509 348). Major bus routes from Edinburgh to the Borders pass nearby, on the A7 and the A6091 (Melrose bypass). There is usually some kind of social activity in the evening, maybe a party or a night out in Gala. Zip PHACE Scotland is looking to recruit 10 brave volunteers to Zip Slide across the Clyde on Sun 21st May to help raise much-needed funds for people in Scotland who are living with HIV. You will start your thrilling descent from an elevated point 100ft above the ground and will slide, fully harnessed, down a special zip wire covering a staggering horizontal distance of up to 630ft! The crane lifting you to the elevated point will be situated at the SECC, on the walkway next to the river. I would come out to everyone as they asked... nfortunately, for the next two years, no-one asked' - Liam The diverse stories of the LGBT community, like those above, can touch upon humour, excitement, sadness and joy embarrassment. Everyone has an important story to tell about their 'coming out', that first embarrassing, or perhaps enlightening, sexual encounter, the prejudices they have come up against and the way their sexuality has impacted upon their identity and lifestyle. Storytelling events throughout Scotland will celebrate some of these tales, through drop-in recordings, 'write out' and 'speak out' storytelling, video diaries and visual representation - including a special 'Text Out' event in Dundee, where story extracts are writ large in artworks for display. This novel way of representing such a diverse collection of life stories will highlight the range of experiences of the LGBT community. There will be the opportunity for participants to share their own stories and memories, plus details about how people can become involved in the task of collecting the oral histories of the LGBT community. This major storytelling project is the first of its kind in Scotland, as it involves LGBT people throughout the country, celebrating the personal and local histories of our community. It has received substantial backing from the Scottish Arts Council Lottery Fund. The events are organised by OurStory Scotland, a charity which works to collect, archive and present the life stories and experiences of the LGBT community in Scotland. Jaime Valentine, Chair of OurStory Scotland, thinks it is important for as large an audience as possible to discover these stories: 'LGBT people have experienced social exclusion and marginalisation throughout the years, and the images and representations of the community have tended to be stereotyped and discriminatory, constructed about the community by those on the outside. This project is part of OurStory Scotland's greater aim to celebrate and promote the history and experiences of the LGBT community through their own words.' Events are taking place throughout the country, from Inverness to Dumfries, which will allow some of these previously marginalised stories to come to the fore, and hopefully, will pave the way for greater understanding within and outwith our own community of the varied needs, conditions and experiences of LGBT individuals. The culmination of these events is an OurStory Scotland Storytelling Ceilidh, held in Glasgow on 4th Nov, as part of the larger Glasgay! Festival. Many of the stories and oral histories collected will be available online on OurStory Scotland's website, along with details of upcoming OurStory Scotland events. Eventually, the National Museums of Scotland will archive the stories which OurStory Scotland have collected to form a National Archive of LGBT Lives, ensuring a legacy for generations to come, and keeping the stories of our diverse community alive. For further enquiries, contact OurStory Scotland via the website: http://www.ourstoryscotland.org.uk/ Caffmos The next Edinburgh meeting of CAFFMOS (for older men and their admirers) will be held in Habana from 1-4pm. Moving On Scott and Ken have sold the Mackenzie Guest House in Edinburgh and intend to open a sandwich and coffee bar in Leith Walk. More Loud Popular Noise After an absence of over five years, Craig Wilde former promoter of classic Arches club FRUITFLY and AURALL @ MAS (Glasgow) and co-owner of the forthcoming WARHOL Bar and Restaurant on Glasgow's Bath Street, returns to his clubbing home with a spectacular bank holiday extravaganza on 28th May at The Arches, Midland St.Inspired by the dark dangers and futuristic vision of Fritz Lang's Metropolis and the anything goes decadence of Weimar Germany... Frixion puts a brand new twist on the best of Trade, Love Boutique and Fruitfly. Remember When The Remember When exhibition, Rainbow City, will open on Sat 6th May at the City Arts Centre. (Watch for the rainbow flag and the Rainbow City banner!) "We're inviting everyone who's volunteered for us, been interviewed by us, contributed material, taken photographs - everyone! to the opening ceremony and private view of the Rainbow City exhibition on Fri 5th May when The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will be blessing the exhibition, the Loud and Proud choir will be singing for us, and you'll get to meet the hundreds of people who have been involved with the project from the very beginning." ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Dumfries & Galloway Scene ========================= Dumphris is a'Ghall-ghaidhealtachd Greetings from your lowland cousins! Whoever it was that said that there are no gay people in Dumfries and Galloway obviously hasn't been to the new 24 hour Tesco in Dumfries where you can find more than your fair share of same sex couples pondering over carb or no carb, free range or barn eggs and whether eating organic chicken will cut out the risk of bird flu! Well we reckon it's about time the stories and experiences of LGBT people in Dumfries and Galloway were heard, and so, with the help of Our Story Scotland, we are holding a storytelling event on Sat 6th May from 11am-4pm at the Crichton University Campus. The event is totally free, and will have activities such as creative writing, oral storytelling, performance poetry and artswork... So if this is something you'd like to take part in, e-mail me at the address below, phone me on Dumfries (01387) 739888 or text on 07785 274147. And another thing! I've heard folk say that you are never more than 6 feet away from a rat in the UK, well in D&G it seems that same can be said for LGBT folk!! It's hoachin' wi' queer folk down here and they need occupied, which moves me neatly on to Mixed Bag which continues to live up to its name, entertaining punters with its unique music and entertainment style which caters for all types from goth chicks to skater boys and dancing queens to diesel dykes! Now at its regular last Fri of the month slot, not even the smoking ban could put folk off, and Mixed Bag is fast becoming THE place for queer boys and girls and their mates to party on down in the country. Wanna find out more or post a request? Visit http://spaces.msn.com/mixedbagdg or drop us a text. LGBT Youth D&G is busy as ever. Amongst other things, our Phoenix LGBT youth group just arrived back from a weekend residential at the lovely Wiston Lodge near Biggar where they got up to all sorts from outdoor activities to a personal safety workshop with D&G Constabulary; we've been back in the schools carrying out training and awareness raising; we're piloting a new text messaging project to reach the most vulnerable young people stranded in remote towns and villages; and finally we are beginning our expansion. As well as the addition of 2 new staff and a youth trainee to our team, we are looking forward to our move to new premises in Brewery Street in Dumfries which will allow us to run more services to the ever growing LGBT community in D&G. So you see, first Dumfries and Galloway, then Scotland, soon the WORLD! Oh well, you can but dream! More next month! Grace Cardozo E-mail: grace.cardozo@lgbtyouth.org.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Glasgow Scene ============= Glaschu What is it with this rain? It's wetter than a rent boy's pants! Im starting to feel a wee bit sorry for all the puffers, but much as i predicted, it is being used as as a way of chatting people up! Burly have asked me to point out that you can buy tickets at Clone Zone, Revolver and at the door in the Arches. They are still asking that you respect the dress code for both Edinburgh and Glasgow nights. A pair of combats is not going to kill you or a nice two size too wee t-shirt! Bennets is running 'Tease' with DJ Sara on Sun nights. It's free with a flyer. Del's Karaoke still seems to be doing well and the smoking ban does not seem to have affected numbers. The Lounge is running something called 'Mating game' on the last Sun of every month and, sadly, the Coco club has closed. Glesgay Ceilidh is back at St Andrews Halls on Fri 26th May from 7.30pm- Midnight. Tickets are GBP15 or GBP12 concession but you do get free entry to Polo and Bennets. You can get tickets at the LGBT Centre Café, Revolver or Clone Zone, as ever these will go fast! Macappela band will be playing and there will be raffles. These nights always do well as they are invariably friendly and have a warm welcoming atmosphere. There is something about kilts! Dance wise, don't worry: patient individuals are on hand to take you through the moves step by step. Vital Decline by Sara Achor is exhibited at the Arches until 4th May. The work is an exploration into when and how sexuality and vigour begin to decay. The images seem to mutate before you like a patchwork quilt of sociology and biology. Inspired by the interaction between popular culture and medical science, only within the body itself would you find anything as complex and as beautiful. Do you see yourself in Art? If you do, get in touch with the Arches by 1st Jun. To celebrate its 15th birthday, the Arches is looking for artist whose work is in keeping with its ethos. Vividyouth meet in the LGBT Centre from 7pm every Tue. The group, for 15-25 year olds, is well run and numbers are starting to increase. We also have 'Gossip' in the John Street Union 8pm-1am, this gay students' night is in need of your support. Students can sign in up to four guests, so that you can enjoy DJ Rici! Pride 2006 will soon be on top of us.On Sat 24th Jun, the march will set off from Blythswood Square making its way to Glasgow Green. The day is worth supporting and I for one am baffled by those who say "Oh, if I'm doing Pride this year it will be London or maybe Manchester, it won't be here". What's that about? So far in the closet you're petting a lion! Or more probable you think a new face with a Scotts accent stands a higher chance of a shag! If it's to work well they need stewards, banner holders, flag wavers and can shakers. They plan to have stalls and such like, with rainbow whatnots as far as the eye can see! Contact 0141-221 7203 or E-mail: admin1@glgbt.org.uk And finally as predicted by me a few months ago the Centre is closing in its present location to re open in another. Bell Street is only a hop and skip from the Merchant Pride and if it all works out I'm sure it should suit them nicely. The affection for Dixon Street is a reflection of the blood sweat and tears that a dedicated group of volunteers put into making it happen. None of them were paid they just believed in it. I hope that the same love and support will be carried to the new venue of the LGBT Centre. We still have a need for this in our city, not just for the often forgot groups that meet there but for those who just pop in. Well, that's all that I have heard, seen, been told and had screamed at me! Till our next merry meeting, this witch must fly! Criz E-mail: criz@drink.demon.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Aberdeen Scene ============== Obar Dheadhainn Here we go again with another round up of events, gossip and scandal in Aberdeen City & Shire. This month's news: Mike Smith installed as Pride 2006 Co-ordinator, Cheers pulling in the crowds, Pink Pigeon @ Indigo & More. The biggest news to come from the Pride office is that they have taken on Mike Smith as the pride coordinator for 2006, He has the huge task of pulling everything together and making Pride happen on Sat 3rd Jun. Mike took on the role on April 24th after taking part in this year's student show "Yokel Hero". I wish Mike the best of luck in his role. If you want to get involved and on the day, the Pride office for 2006 is based at 46a Union Street and can be contacted on 07723 672056. Newest venue on the scene "Cheerz" has certainly made its mark in the city. Having been in a couple of times, I think it is a great new place for the LGBT community. Speaking to Caroline at Cheerz about the future of the venue I was told that there is lots to look forward to. The entertainment at the moment is pulling in the crowds. Wed is student heaven with Lexy Lush recreating game shows of the 70's & 80's along with cheesy tunes and fantastic drinks promotions with house doubles at GBP1.60, Thu brings the "Cheerz Quiz" hosted by Miss Romy starting at 8:30pm with Lexy Lush's Karaoke from 10:30pm. Fri is the BIG start to the weekend with Miss Romy & Lexy teaming up with their male pole dancer to give everyone a fun night with singing, dancing, karaoke and more with giveaways including cd players and more importantly ALCOHOL! Sat has more of the same along with possible theme nights coming soon too. If you're not really into all the madness and mayhem that the "girls" bring you, Cheerz is always good during the day to sit and have a quiet drink or even a coffee from their new machine. Please get along and support this new venue, they are really trying to give the LGBT community what they are looking for and even take your ideas on board. If you have any suggestions for them feel free to E-mail them to me at andi@g-zone.co.uk and I will pass them onto the guys for you. Pink Pigeon at Indigo, the once a month event, is holding a Military Boot Camp Special on the first Sat in May when the guys encourage you to come along dressed in military gear whether it be Army, Navy, RAF or your own interpretation of Military! Last month's controversially named "Bareback Mounting" cowboy theme night went well with a usual Sat night crowd being pulled in, the girls and boys all dressed up for the night with the bar staff all dressed up as cowboys and Indians. Having never been along to one of these nights myself, I rely on comments from friends and members of the G Zone, the main view is that it is a good night but feel that paying GBP5 to get in for a theme night is a bit expensive when other venues in town such as Espionage and Jumpin' Jaks are free unless they have a big name on. If you have any views on the pink pigeon nights feel free to put messages on the forums at www.g-zone.co.uk/aberdeen Indigo continue their Pink Pounder most nights with most drinks for GBP1, opening hours are still a bit sketchy but mostly Mon to Thu open from 5pm- 2am, Fri 5pm-3am, Sat 8pm-3am and Sun from 8pm-2am. Entertainment at Indigo is provided by The DiscoBus and various other DJ's every night of the week. They are looking for ideas for anything that you guys would like to see in the club and you can do this by Emailing me, all ideas will then be passed onto Fraser and the team. Wellmans Sauna and health suite are still going through a few changes/problems regarding premises and changes, I have not yet been in touch with the owner to get things cleared up. Anyone wanting anymore information on Wellmans can give them a call on 01224 611888. The AU LGBT Gayleidh went really well and everyone had a fantastic night at the Douglas Hotel, for anyone wanting to get involved and go along to the AU LGBT nights which are held on Thu, please visit their website at http://aulgbt.blogspot.com for more information. NUS and RGU LGBT continue their "Please give blood because we can't campaign" online, on campus and on the streets. The Campaign has received national and international news coverage with the campaign becoming news in London and ashington DC. Matthew Middler LGBT Officer for RGU is leading the campaign in Aberdeen and can be contacted via the web at http://www.rgunion.co.uk/LGBT.htm PHACE Scotland at 11 Waverley Place continue their good work for the community. Alan Parker the service Manager has settled in and is in the process of evolving the project into what is required for the future. All of the groups that use the offices still have their evenings weekly/monthly and more information is available by calling Phace on 0845 241 2151 or you can pop into the office and have a chat with the guys there and pick up the "essentials" while you're there. May also sees the world's gayest, cheesiest event in the form of The Eurovision Song Contest when 20th May will see Daz Sampson representing the UK in Athens. Personally, I want Romania or Germany to win, if you haven't already seen the entries you can visit http://www.doteurovision.com/. If you want to do your bit for charity whilst watching the Eurovision you can always do your bit for my charity of 2006, Guide Dogs For The Blind. All you need to make things go with a bang is available at http://www.guidedogs.org.uk/europarty/ with loads of ideas for stuff that you can get up to on the night. I hope that this has brought you up to date with all that's happening across the area and given you ideas for nights in or out in May. Andi E-mail: andi@g-zone.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Edinburgh ========= Dùn Eideann The end of an era... Alan and Maggie Joy have announced that Joy will make one final appearance on 6th May and shall then cease to be. The news is a devastating blow to the many followers of what has become an institution in Edinburgh, after surviving for 13 years in a climate where countless other clubs attempting to reach similar heights of creativity and madness struggled and died. Joy had its cutting edge beginnings in the Calton Studios, playing a type of music which had never been heard before in the City and has now entrenched itself firmly as a leader on the Edinburgh scene. Sat 6th May is a night which must not be missed, and to send Joy off in style Queen Maxine will be whipping us into a frenzy alongside Maggie Joy, Alan Joy and other residents. Mingin' at the Venue will have its last outing on 13th May. The silver lining to this cloud is that Alan and Maggie will still be playing for us monthly at Upstairs Downstairs in eGo - next on 20th May. Velvet this month will be entertaining the ladies with table magic and tarot readings on Sat 6th May when resident DJs Carpe Diem and DJ Random will be playing their usual high standard of eclectic music which has gone down amazingly well since the change of DJs late last year. Velvet have also announced they will play host to a consecutive New Year's Eve celebration this year. Disko Bloodbath continues to satisfy lovers of all things alternative, every first Wed of the month at eGo. They combine cheap drink prices with intriguing bar props - if this has got your curiosity going, go check it out. Happy First Birthday to Fur Burger on Thu 11th May. Every 2nd Thu, Fur Burger draws a younger crowd of ladies with a mixed music genre satisfying a diverse music taste. Vibe also recently celebrated their 4th birthday, with prizes and give-aways. Planet Out was due to host the first heat of Drag Idol this month. However, due to lack of participants, the event has been cancelled. Sun nights at Planet Out have continued to gather momentum with their offering of live music. It's become something of an unofficial dyke night, with weekly alternating females on the keyboard/guitar singing requests. Combine that with the cheap drink prices on offer before 9pm and it's a must-do night and something a bit different to the usual. Also not to be missed is Sala's upholding of the British tradition of the pub quiz on the 3rd Tue evening of each month. It seems Edinburgh has survived the smoking ban unscathed. In fact, several of the pubs report an increase in custom since its introduction. CCs have, in their infinite wisdom, allowed smokers to take drinks outside as a means of preventing drink spiking which we all must be more aware of now there is more chance of drinks being left unattended, whilst eGo has the 'smoking courtyard'. Most smokers I have spoken to about the ban are looking at the ban on a positive note: it's definitely improving pulling capabilities! Jodie Fleming E-mail: jodie_76@hotmail.com The New Town Bar is no longer - replaced by The Twist. And what a difference! You can actually see what the people in the bar look like now with the new bright clean design which must have cost Ray and Andy a bob or two. Well worth a visit - you just wouldn't recognise the place. They've got a free Wi-Fi connection too. Another revamp is somewhat unexpectedly at the Holyrood - it seems that keen non-smoker Mark has waited until the fags were stubbed out before popping down to B&Q and getting in a not inconsiderable amount of paint. Well, it was rather needed! The Regent (the only LGBT bar in Scotland in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide) is helping to celebrate Make May Mild Month with a couple of cask milds going on the bar. "Greene King XX Mild is a fine, dark, mild ale with a distinctive taste (3% abv) and delicate aroma. It draws its characteristics from a special blend of black and crystal malts to give a burnt, roasted flavour while the delicate hint of hops in the nose comes from the Northdown variety." "George Gale's Festival Mild (4.8% abv) is a full bodied premium mild with a far more complex palate than normally found in this beer style. The beer is brewed using floor malted Maris Otter pale ale malt, black malt and crystal malt. The moreish bitterness is provided by a careful blend of Fuggles, Goldings and Challenger hops. Festival Mild was created in 1990 to support the CAMRA campaign to revive the fortunes of cask mild. First produced for a beer festival, (hence the name), it soon became established and has proved a great favourite with the customers. This is reflected in the many awards won at beer festivals." Just a shame that the brewery has been shut and it's now brewed at Fullers. On the subject of Real Ale, I was along at the Heriot Watt Uni beer festival the other day and it was just crawling with totty. As I practically crawled out of the venue for the night bus, I must get in training for the CAMRA Scottish Traditional Beer Festival to be held in the Assembly Rooms Thu-Sat 8th-10th Jun. Over at Habana, Sun 30th April saw a Tarts and Vicars evening with Karaoke hosted by the incomparable Ms Samantha Swallows. They'll be hosting a Post Eurovision Party on Sun 21st May with added cabaret including Samantha Swallows, Nina Sparkle, Alan and Friends and Mark Halliday. John Hein E-mail: editorial@scotsgay.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Dundee Scene ============ Dùndeagh Hello and welcome to this month's Dundee round up. Charlies is currently in middle of a refurbishment, and is looking better every time I go in. They have opened the place up lot making it a lot more inviting. Walls have been knocked down and the "Swedish" style pine is no longer. Charlies pub quiz will be on as normal on the 1st Tue of the month which by my reckoning will be the 2nd of May. Joyce is also trying out new nights including live music. For more details, ask behind the bar. Brooklyn's is still the place to go for your weekly dose of Karaoke. Suzie as usual will be hosting it every Wed, Fri and Sun night OUT, Dundee's only LGBT nightclub is open Wed to Sun, with special drinks promotions on a Wed and Thu night. With Dean providing the music on a Wed, Thu and Sat and Jamie DJing every Fri and Sun. Because Diversitay is moving premises their services have changed slightly, with the lines now being open Mon 7-9pm, but still on the same number of Dundee (01382) 202620. if you are needing any information or just someone to chat to about problems you may be having, give them a call and they will be happy to help in anyway they can. Beth E-mail: Beth_Scotsgay@yahoo.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Fair Waived The Golden Porn =========================== Sometimes, despite one's best endeavours, a particular DVD just stays in the machine and, every time the bog roll is at hand, the remote gets picked up and the same old bits of rumpy pumpy come on the screen to assist the despunking of the beast. That has been the function of Bareback Fly Boys (Punkz Productions) in my machine for the last couple of months and, by now, I must know every inch of the movie, not to mention every inch of the young men in it. A typical Eastern European piece of functional porn from Vlado Iresch, it stars his usual stable of smooth toned young men in an improbable tale involving lots of flying machines but, sadly, no condoms. And condoms there should have been. This is one not to try at home, my dears! Nevertheless, I get through a whole roll of Tesco's best soft stuff watching this one and I think it is long going to remain a favourite with its largely joyful and affirmational up the bum (and other places too) sex set in a small airfield with lots of rather young and gorgeous employees under the new boss, Cameron Jackson. Displacing it from the machine was another Eastern European romp from Beau Mec Entertainment, Boys In The Snow. A wee bit of a weepie, in some ways, this had the benefit that it had lots of things that I would certainly feel happy trying at home. The young lovers in it are, well, young and in love. The slightly older guys are young and in lust. What more could a sad old wanker like me want? And, to top it all, there's Cameron Jackson again for once properly dressed with a nice piece of rubber enclosing his reasonably substantial manhood. My DVD machine then got to munch on Sweat, a Bulldog production. This was very much what it said on the box - Dirty Fucking Bastards. To be honest, 30something slim, muscular often slightly hairy bodies and designer stubble do little for me. But, judging from what my favourite local pornographer tells me about sales of this one, I'm clearly in a minority. And, it has to be said, that the sex is somewhat raunchy with lots of fluids dripping all over the place. And, with a bumper box of condoms clearly used in the production, just what the doctor ordered. Justin Milne ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Web Shagging ============ with Joe Hill Since the birth of Gaydar.co.uk in 1999, finding a shag has been as much about trolling online as letching from over your pint glass on the gay scene. Whereas at your local you ran the risk of someones fist (in all the wrong places!), today´s homos of the internet revolution need only ask "fancy a shag?". So what better way to start our roundup of gay meeting and dating sites than with OUTeverywhere.com , a rare "granny-proof" website. Outeverywhere - http://www.outeverywhere.com/?by=scotsbear Men and Women welcome. OUT's selling point is the sheer number of events organised by its members. On either a national or local scale there are regular meetups for every possible interest... from real ale to hillwalking to meals out to cinema and even boating. Of the gay websites, OUT is one of the longest running and has managed to stay clear of onscreen advertising. Two years ago OUT became available to women, and although this site is male dominated, there are plenty of women online ... if you look hard! Because the site isn't supported by advertising there is a membership fee, but there is also a free trial for a month, more than enough time to see and love OUT. ManD8 - http://www.mand8.com/ Men only. Despite its name, mand8 is not an authoritarian fetish website. Actually I think quite a few of its members would freak at the sight of a latex-gloved fist. Mand8 is very definitely a website for cool trendy folk, erm, I mean "peepz". There is no membership charge - it looks like its running costs are recouped through its shop and banner advertising. If, like me, you're a bit of a pervert, you might well enjoy their webcam chat rooms and video profiles. Definitely a good way to get to know guys before you meet.... although, half the thrill is not knowing, surely? It's a busy site and although most of the guys are from the UK, there are quite a few European members. A little country flag makes it easy to see who is local to you. I wonder if they'll include the cross of Saint Andrew soon? FitLads - http://www.fitlads.co.uk/ Men only. The ironic thing about this site for chavs and their admirers is the popularity of the discussion boards. You would expect top tips on picking locks and bombing Hooch, but in reality the forums seem the most active and fast-paced part of the site, from nights out being arranged, to chatter about "Deal or No Deal". One of the main selling points is the number of features available to free members. There are no profile viewing or message limits. Members can make an optional payment of the price of an Edinburgh pint to become "premier members", who seem to have a certain status. Finding a shag is certainly easy thanks to the postcode search. Simply entering your postcode instantly finds lists of lads upon lads upon .... well.... cock. They've just launched SlaveBoys.co.uk SkinMarvin - http://www.skinmarvin.net/ Men only. SkinMarvin.com has been around for years as a regular pics and chat site for guys into Skinheads, Punks, Tattoos, Scally and Army lads. Only this month has he launched a new chat website [skinmarvin.net] where followers of the 'lifestyle' (though, I think for many, fetish is a more accurate word) can chat directly to each other and swap their dirty pics. The galleries and discussion boards are well sorted into Skin, Scally, Army, Punk and Tattoo categories, that said, the members are not divided by 'fetish'. If the main website [skinmarvin.com] is anything to go by, this is definitely one to watch. Better still, the site doesn't cost anything to join as it appears to be funded by subtle advertising. Caffmos - http://www.caffmoscommunity.com/ Men only. Caffmos was created with the more mature, senior man in mind. They offer a platform for older gay men and admirers to find new contacts and friends, as well as support and help if needed. Standard membership is free, and gold membership is just GBP18 a year. So about half a pint each month, in real money. If you aren't too confident with the computer, Caffmos offer a postal advert service, which is included with their free membership. Not bad. The site is feature-rich - members can send E-mails, instant messages, and even view each others webcams. Freakcity - http://www.freakcity.net/ Men and Women welcome. Honesty is the best policy at Freakcity - new member greated with the promise that "Nearly three years on, we're still the biggest bunch of freaks on the internet". It's the in place for outcasts. The dregs of the internet. Where people go when they feel they've got nowhere else. That seems a little bit unfair really.... they seem to have a nice little community there with a good mix of people from all walks of life, who don't take themselves too seriously. It's not really a site for finding a shag, but that's not say you can't find ample bosums, if you look carefully! Mostly it's marvellous. Gaydar - http://www.gaydar.co.uk/ GaydarGirls - http://www.gaydargirls.com/ Men and Women welcome. Shagdar ... I mean gaydar. It's practically in the dictionary as the term for "gay website". Discussion and news of the day isn't really Gaydar's aim. Actually the site is pretty simple, but that's a lot of its beauty. The goal? To put LGBT people in touch with others. They do that remarkably well. Nobdar has a cruisey feel and definitely the intention of its members is to get laid and so therefore many people on Gaydar have accounts on the other sites I've covered. Sounds too good to be true? It is. The hefty eight quid a month - that's the price of four pints down my way - membership fee means unless you're flash with your cash, or just moist in anticipation, you'll be limited to a few dozen profile views a day, and only a handful of messages. That said, the chance of getting laid is exceptionally high, and compared to the cost of wining and dining your victim, perhaps just shy of a tenner isn't too bad after all? Squirt - http://www.squirt.org/ Men only. Even more straight-to-the-point than Gaydar - use Squirt to get lucky. Make sure you buy an AA road map in order to get the most out of Squirt's excellent cruising directory in which you can find cottages where you never knew such things existed. Like the rest, there are member profiles, some members more padded than others. Membership is cheap, and they even give you a freebie if your website links to them. I can see the rush to make Geocities one-page-wonders already! GirlsWeb - http://www.girlsweb.co.uk/ Women only. I'm being quite objective with this one, being a bloke and all. Girlsweb goes to lengths to make sure your profile is filled out, in fact, you can't use the site otherwise, which is a bit tedious when you're presented with a list fo 500 bands for you to choose your favourite from! Membership is free, there are a few adverts paying for the site, clearly not well enough as the site is a little sluggish - but despite this there are a respectable number of girls online, and most of them have pictures too. There's not much mention of nooky though! Searching is very precise - you can filter by interests, appearance, location, age... even hairstyle. The site feels a little basic, but I think with the range of features offered, it's certainly one to watch. Some other gems I didn't have space to review http://www.scotsgay.co.uk/ - LGBT - Our own site - with the famous Meet Market http://www.dudesnude.com/ - Men - What it says, upload nob pics http://www.thecruisingground.com/ -Men - meet men for group sex http://www.bondagecontrol.com/ - Men - into spanky spanky? http://www.slaveboys.co.uk/ - Men - a new slave/master website http://www.lesbianuk.co.uk/ - Women - resource directory http://uk.gay.com/ - LGBT - Great news, but no good for finding a shag. http://www.thepinksofa.co.uk/ - Women - I wish I'd reviewed this one instead, there's loads online and it seems quite a big website. http://www.g-zone.co.uk - LGBT - Covers Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh & Glasgow OutLadies - http://uk.outladies.com/ Women only. An easy to navigate site with plenty of members. Searching is easy, and new members are highlighted. Although, if you're looking for more liberal fun, beware... "We are no longer accepting women who have boyfriends, husbands, or women looking for three-way relationships which include a man." - oh, and nudity is forbidden. This is definitely a dating site rather than somewhere to hook-up. Membership is just over a tenner a month, paid three months at a time. The price is steep and the rules are hard - but I can't find a better lesbian dating website... can anyone suggest one? ... and one for the Kilties WWW. K I LT I E S .N E T Like the Kilt and what's under it? Then http://www.kilties.net/ is for you. It's a new kilt fetish site so get there first to make sure you get a good username! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- INTERNATIONAL ============= by Rex Wockner Warsaw closes down prominent gay club Gays staged five days of sleep-ins at the Warsaw gay club and cultural centre Le Madame in late March after the City Council ordered police to close it. At times, more than 200 demonstrators took part in the defence of the establishment. At 6am on 31st Mar, however, when only 50 people were inside the building, police conducted another raid and shut it down. Activists told blogger and Gay City News contributor Doug Ireland that police beat some of the club's defenders who had chained themselves to pipes and railings or went limp as they were hauled away. The defenders regrouped across the street and chanted, "It's not over, it's just the beginning", Ireland said. Iraqi gays say they're being killed Iraq has seen an increase in homophobic killings since the US invasion, according to a BBC report. Frightened gay people told the network that the murders are connected to the growing influence of antigay religious figures and the increasing lawlessness of militias. Seyed Kashmiri, a spokesman for Iraq's most revered Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al- Sistani, suggested some of the killings are appropriate. "Homosexuals and lesbians are not killed for practicing their inclinations for the first time", he said. "There are certain conditions drawn out by jurists before this punishment can be implemented, which is perhaps similar to the punishment meted out by other heavenly religions." However, the Interior Ministry is run by members of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, a leading Shiite party, and gays say the council's Badr Brigades militia is among those attacking them. "Saddam was a tyrant, but at least we had more freedom then", one Iraqi gay man told the network. "Nowadays, gay men are just killed for no reason." Dutch grant gay immigrants a reprieve Under pressure from Parliament and activists, the Netherlands' immigration minister, Rita Verdonk, has extended a moratorium on expulsion of gay Iranian asylum-seekers for an additional six months. Despite many reports of antigay abuses by Iranian officials, Verdonk is not convinced Iranian gays face serious persecution in their homeland. During the moratorium, the Foreign Ministry will launch a new effort to assess Iran's gay climate. The Etemad newspaper reported that two men were sentenced to death by the Tehran Criminal Court after the wife of one of them found a video of the two having sex. The Tehran daily Kayhan covered the hanging of two men - Mokhtar N., 24, and Ali A., 25 - in Shahid Bahonar Square in the town of Gorgan for what it said was the crime of sodomy. Canadian court OKs antigay ad The highest court in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan has ruled that Regina resident Hugh Owens did not violate the provincial Human Rights Code when he placed an ad in Saskatoon's StarPhoenix newspaper quoting antigay Bible passages and depicting two stick-figure men holding hands underneath the international "no" symbol. A human-rights board of inquiry and the Queen's Bench court had previously found Owens guilty of offending gays' dignity and exposing them to hatred and ridicule, but the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal overturned the rulings even though the ad was, according to the court, "bluntly presented and doubtlessly upsetting to many". Hong Kong bans Brit partnership ceremonies at consulate Hong Kong's Home Affairs Bureau has told the British Consulate-General it cannot perform same-sex unions under the United Kingdom's new Civil Partnership Act. The bureau said permitting the ceremonies would amount to an inappropriate taking of sides during ongoing local debate on legislation banning antigay discrimination. The UK partnership law allows embassies and consulates to register same-sex unions when at least one partner is a British national and the host government does not object. Some 3.5 million Hong Kong citizens hold British National (Overseas) passports - a travel document given to Hong Kongers who chose not to become solely citizens of China. In addition, about 200,000 British citizens live in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Several nations reportedly allow the unions at British consulates and embassies, including Australia, Belarus, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Israel, Japan, Moldova, South Africa, Switzerland, Turkmenistan, Venezuela and Vietnam. Ottawa Pride is bankrupt The gay pride committee in the Canadian capital of Ottawa is "effectively bankrupt", the Ottawa Citizen has reported. Ottawa-Gatineau Pride is $187,000 in debt and needs an infusion of $25,000 from the city government to stay afloat and stage this year's parade and festival, the committee said. "If we don't have a festival this year, then there's no guarantee we can pay back the creditors", committee member Tamara Stammis told the paper. Ironically, $66,000 of the existing debt is owed to the city. Euro MPs denounce Nigeria More than 60 members of the European Parliament representing all major parties has called on Nigeria's government withdraw legislation that will criminalise gay relationships and same-sex marriage, and ban gay organisations and activism. The measure has been approved by the Federal Executive Council and awaits action by the National Assembly. It calls for five years' imprisonment for anyone who "goes through the ceremony of marriage with a person of the same sex", "performs, witnesses, aids or abets the ceremony of same sex marriage" or "is involved in the registration of gay clubs, societies and organisations". It also criminalises public displays of a "same-sex amorous relationship" and bans gay adoption. P.M.: Ireland will have civil unions Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern says that his government is committed to full equality for gay people and will try to create civil unions for same-sex couples. "Our sexual orientation is not an incidental attribute", Bertie said in a speech at the opening of the new offices of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network. "It is an essential part of who and what we are. ... Sexual orientation cannot, and must not, be the basis of a second- class citizenship." "I want to state clearly today that the government is unequivocally in favour of treating gay and lesbian people as fully equal citizens in our society", he said. "Giving effect to this principle in legislation is necessarily complex and challenging. Legislating for civil partnerships requires thinking through a host of related matters. The British Civil Partnership Act ... has 264 sections and 30 schedules. Moreover, our written constitution gives rise to complexities that did not arise in the British case. This challenge, however, is one that the government is determined to meet. We are committed to legislating on this issue." Bahamas bans Brokeback Mountain The Bahamas Plays and Films Control Board has banned Brokeback Mountain. A spokesman cited the film's nudity, profanity and "extreme homosexuality". The board reportedly took action at the request of the Bahamas Christian Council. Gay groups and some media personalities denounced the ban. Greece affirms military gay ban Greece's armed forces has affirmed that it doesn't allow gays in the military. They are excluded under regulations that ban people with "psychosexual or sexual identity disorders". Gay activists are protesting against the ban because in order to obtain a driver's licence in Greece, one must present a document proving he completed his compulsory military service - and, as a result, some gay men reportedly have had trouble getting a driver's licence. Gays win inheritance rights in South Africa South Africa's Pretoria High Court has ruled that Mark Gory is the sole heir to his male partner's estate, the South African Press Agency reported. Judge Willie Hartzenburg declared the Intestate Succession Act unconstitutional because South Africa's post-apartheid Constitution bans discrimination based on sexual orientation. Gory's live-in partner of two years, Henry Brooks, died last year without a will. Brooks' family reportedly then began raiding the couple's possessions and eventually forced Gory out of his home and sold it. Gory will now receive the proceeds from the sale of the dwelling. Eunuchs and gays march in Bangalore Several hundred gays and eunuchs have marched in Bangalore, India, demanding equal rights and repeal of the nation's ban on gay sex. The eunuchs - of which India has around 1 million - demanded access to marriage, adoption and jobs. Some of India's eunuchs (known as hijras) are born as such, but most are males who were castrated before puberty. Cambodian LGBTs march About 400 people marched in the third gaypride parade in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, last month. Parties and other events continued through the weekend. The parade was organised by the Salt Lounge bar and sponsored by Population Services International, Family Health International and the Women's Network for Unity, according to the German wire service Deutsche Presse- Agentur. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- FILMS TO KNOW ABOUT =================== by Malcolm Epstein In recent years, France has produced two charismatic leading men in Melvil Poupaud and Romain Duris who have more appeal than most British and American actors. TIME TO LEAVE (18) has Melvil as a top Parisian fashion photographer who collapses one day and tests prove he has a tumour that will only give him a few months to live. He reacts with bitterness and is incredibly spiteful to his sister at a family dinner. He tells his gay lover their relationship is over. Driving through the countryside at a café a pleasant waitress starts a conversation with him and hearing he is spending the night with his grandmother, Jeanne Moreau, says "That's nice." "I'm not a nice person." he admits. On the way back to Paris he stops at the café again and the waitress tells him she and her husband can't have a baby as he is sterile. They had decided together that if Melvil sleeps with her they will be happy to pay him. He refuses the money. However he agrees to the idea and a threesome results that could only happen in a French movie with Melvil paying great attention to the husband as well as the wife. Mr Poupaud's considerable appeal makes this a film to see. But it is a pity the writer/director Francois Oxon didn't know, that although millions are afraid of dying, if someone studies books on spiritualism and mediums there is proof that another life is coming to us all in the spirit world. If he had incorporated that into his script he could have had a world hit on his hands. IMAGINE ME AND YOU (12a) is a comedy and drama worth remembering in June as at a wedding reception the wife meets for the first time the lady florist and chemistry happens between them. As her husband is very attractive audiences might ask why her interest in women had taken so long to materialize. However, it is cleverly scripted and essential for girls who fancy girls. Those of us who worship the ground that Colin Farrell strides manfully across, will count the days till the early June opening of ASK THE DUST (15). He is a struggling writer in Los Angeles in the early thirties whom, the script would have us believe, spends most of the story resisting two girls who are panting for him. His acting ability is stretched here as Farrell fans know in his private life he jumps across most available female flesh. Hollywood should not rely on the fact the camera loves him and find more interesting plotlines. Only for Farrell devotees. Don't be put off a ridiculous title like WAH-WAH (15) as set in Swaziland at the end of colonial life actor Richard E Grant has written and directed with style the story of his early life. Having a diplomat father whose alcoholic rages had him chasing around with a gun can't have helped Richard's teenage years. Any of us with problem parents might decide ours were not quite as exhausting. Having the cream of actors to choose from Richard is well served with Julie Walters, Miranda Richardson and Gabriel Byrne. TELL THEM WHO YOU ARE (tbc) is a documentary for connoisseurs of cinema who may know the name of cinematographer Haskell Wexler made by his son Mark. Haskell, now in his eighties, has made endless hit movies, but it is not all about people saying how marvellous he is to know. Jane Fonda and Julia Roberts loved working with him. But Michael Douglas in his first job as a producer employed him to make "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" and says he wont repeat the experience. If you want to know how films are made it should be seen. Current Releases BALLETS RUSSES (pg) is a documentary essential to ballet lovers as it shows the original impresario, Diaghilev, whose company had the best reputation in the world, died in 1929, and two rival companies formed to tour the world. Archive footage and interviews with the elderly dancers today make compulsive viewing. Frederic Franklin, now past 90, is also an entertaining personality remembering an incredible past. PIERREPOINT (15) holds attention with Britain's most impressive character actor Timothy Spall as the man who combined a humble job with being the busiest public hangman. After the war he was sent to Germany to hang dozens of Nazi war leaders. With the murders taking place today many regret hanging was abolished. If a disappointing film can be interesting it is THE WHITE COUNTESS (pg). Director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant's partnership brought dozens of tasteful films over the years, but Ismail died last year after this was completed. It is ruined having the leading man, Ralph Fiennes as a blind diplomat running as a hobby a Shanghai nightclub in the thirties. The daughter of an aristocratic Russian family now poverty stricken, Natasha Richardson, works for him. The relationship between the leads doesn't work. But it is set in a fascinating period when the Japanese invade China and no expense is spared in a cast of thousands. It is a pleasant change not having Hugh Grant playing a nervous Englishman in AMERICAN DREAMZ (12a), but a self confident host to a TV talent show. The script is witty, but takes incredible liberties depicting the president, Dennis Quaid, as a slow witted man who has to be told to do most things. However it will keep you amused. The readers of People magazine recently named Matthew McConaughey the sexiest man alive. Bearing that in mind consider FAILURE TO LAUNCH (15) in which his parents decide at 35 he needs to give up endless girls to commit to one and leave them in peace. Audiences will be surprised they pay a professional consultant, Sarah Jessica Parker, to help him make a decision. A peculiar plotline is helped by imaginative direction. DVD World The American company TLA Releasing continues to make movies aimed at a gay audience to see in the privacy of their homes and many are worth hiring. HARRY & MAX covers the intense brotherly love between Harry, a 23 year old former boyband idol, who is watching his 16 year old brother, Max, follow in his footsteps. They go on a long promised camping trip on which Harry decides his straight life has less appeal now that growing up Max fancies him. LOCKED UP, set in a German prison, is brutally realistic about an attractive prisoner being bullied by a sadistic tough who objects to the young man's interest in a black inmate. A strong stomach is needed for this one. Anyone interested in gay film stars of the past will know that while Rock Hudson was the idol of billions of women in the fifties and sixties there was always a boyfriend at home. He was given strict instructions if they ever went out in public together two actresses under contract to the studio would always have to go with them. STRAIGHT JACKET is a comedy version of that story where the studio's top star is forced to marry, as happened to Rock Hudson, when it leaks out that he is gay. An energetic cast make it great fun. New moviemakers feel they are justified putting sickening violence in their first film as the world is scattered with sadists who love it. In 1991 Quentin Tarantino did it in "Reservoir Dogs". Within half an hour a policeman was tied to a chair by a hoodlum who sliced one of his ears off. I left the preview cinema at that point. HELLBENT, later in May, has two gay guys murdered in a wood by a lunatic who removed their heads. I have never seen such bad taste which is a tragedy as some of the best looking guys you have ever seen are in it. HAPPY ENDINGS was the most popular film at the London Gay and Lesbian Film Festival now touring the country, but it is now on DVD. A clever writer and director, Don Roos, has combined many stories of straight and gay life and Bobby Connavale, who plays Will's policeman boyfriend in the "Will And Grace" TV series is here playing a masseur stimulating women clients. He alone makes this worth hiring. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- BOOKS TO KNOW ABOUT =================== by Dirk Kriete You can't say that! By Charles Karel Bouley Published by Alyson GBP 10.99 Let's start this month's selection with a real corker of a book. Who says the Americans sense of humour is below par - well, it probably still is true for the vast majority - but Charles Karel Bouley is definitely the exception to the rule. He is known to millions as the brash, outspoken, hilarious radio talk-show phenomenon (KFI in Los Angeles, KGO in San Francisco) who's unafraid to tackle any subject. He also writes often controversial commentaries on Advocate.com - well worth a visit by the way - and in this book explores everything from the myth of unity in the gay community to the ultimate hate crime perpetrated against all Americans on September 11, 2001, You Can't Say That! is a sharp and witty, and definitely politically incorrect book that had me in fits of laughter, but ultimately also left me with a deep unease about the state of the world. I just wish I could listen to his talk show, if it's anything like this book it'll be well worth half an hour of any ones time. The Tricky Part By Martin Moran Published by Souvenir Press GBP12.99 A change of pace now - here are a couple of books dealing with the sexual abuse of children. This one is a moving account of Martin, who at the age of 12 got involved in a sexual relationship with an older man, namely a counsellor from a Catholic boy's camp. Told with startling honesty, humour and understanding, it examines how a naive altar boy steeped in the rituals and mysticism of the Roman Catholic Church was seduced on an overnight trip by a man over twice his age. Martin Moran charts the confusing mixture of guilt and desire and the festering consequences of his childhood abuse, whilst enmeshed in his secret relationship. Although Martin Moran wrestles with despair, twice attempts suicide and battles a sex addiction that he attributes to the adolescent trauma, he manages to find salvation through a career in the theatre and a healthy, loving 20-year relationship with another man. A story of hope rather than blame, Martin Moran describes his journey of recovery and reconciliation and eventually faces his demons - including his molester, in a confrontation 30 years later. It's a powerful story, compellingly told and not shying away from the thorny issues surrounding an experience most of us thankfully will never have to deal with. If I Should Die Before I Wake By Michelle Morris Published by Souvenir Press Ltd GBP8.99 This book, like the previous one, deals with another case of child sex abuse, but this time written by a woman, Michelle Morris, who became a social worker working extensively with victims of child abuse. She lives in California where she cares for her adopted family of severely disabled children who themselves suffered sexual abuse. On an almost daily basis the news pages carry stories on paedophilia and child abuse, and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children estimate that 11% of children experience sexual abuse. Yet, the voices of the victims of sexual abuse remain relatively silenced, and media attention is focussed on the perpetrators of abuse rather than the enduring pain and rage felt by victims of abuse. She has created a voice for the abused in her character of Carla, who holds her sleeping father at gunpoint, planning to kill him when he awakes. She perceives this to be her only chance to escape the violent and destructive intimacy of their life together. Over the course of the night she tells the story of how he destroyed her mind. For all her life, Carla's father has abused her, holding her an emotional prisoner. Carla begins to investigate her own past, to question the history she has been told by her father and to realise the despair, loneliness and self-disgust she feels. Again, this book left me profoundly moved and shocked, counting my blessings that gave me a childhood so carefree and not marred by the premature loss of innocence and consequent hurt and trauma. Dorm Porn Edited by Sean Fisher Published by Alyson GBP 10.99 Let's get to the lighter side of reading now and enjoy a couple of one handed books. This one is full of raunchy erotic stories about college lads and their myriad sexual escapes. Students, notorious for playing hard, bonking like rabbits and not doing much studying, are the perfect subject for this raunchy book and what better setting for them than the college dorm. This is a totally fun and sexy read. The boys are hot, the sex is hot, the situations are hot, the imagery is hot, and these stories will leave you hot, heaving, and hopefully, heavy handed. With an impressive 25 stories, this one captures the intensity of college boy fantasies, from horny gay frat gang bangs to teacher/student "extra credit". And most of the stories get to the point, running no longer than 10-12 pages. Brotherhood : Gay Life in College Fraternities Edited by Shane L Windmeyer Published by Alyson GBP 10.99 This one is not as hot and steamy as the previous one, but it is entirely based on true experiences of students caught up in the 'Greek' fraternity system the American college education is well known for. Previously a bastion of homophobia, these fraternities seem to be slowly joining the 21st century and reluctantly opening up to gay members of the college population. In this book are dozens of heartfelt recollections from gay 'Greeks' who are not full time writers, but men who wanted to open themselves and their experience for future generations. This 2nd installment takes the groundbreaking work of "Out on Fraternity Row" to a higher level. This book manages to be informative, educational, and even a bit sexy. All in all, a good read. Rockstarlet By Stewart Lewis Published by Alyson GBP 8.99 This book I found to be quite an entertaining read - The narrator Jackson Poole is immediately lovable, and it is nice to read a gay-themed story that is not depressing for a change. Jackson is a 33 year old musician who has finally signed a record deal. Unfortunately for him, he has an image-is-everything management team and a label that insists that he butch it up in order to get signed and stay that way. This could have provided an opportunity for a fine struggle for the reader to watch unfold, but unfortunately this never really happens. He hardly ever makes any effort to 'hide' who he is (unless you count photo ops with a vapid soap actress in between your hookups with other men) which is made easier by the fact that he apparently has no idea anyway. Apart from those little downsides this book has a lot to offer - the comic timing is impeccable and Poole's courage and conviction as he faces his own demons and challenges his critics' notions of success and identity are a real inspiration. The Rice Queen Diaries By Daniel Gawthrop Published by Arsenal Pulp Press GBP 10.99 The writer traces his attraction from his early years in a small Canadian town outside Vancouver, which was best known as being the location shoot for low-budget American films and he recalls his teen years spent idolising Bruce Lee and his fixation on an Asian schoolmate and his hazing becomes a sexual spectacle for him. Traversing three continents, these diaries are a personal reckoning, a bold coming to terms with the nuances of sexuality that has a universal relevance. After relocating to the larger city of Vancouver, he is able to more openly pursue his interests as a gay man, and becomes involved in one of the "Long Yang" clubs, designed for those attracted to gay Asian men. Traversing three continents, these diaries are a personal reckoning, a bold coming to terms with the nuances of sexuality that has a universal relevance. It's a very interesting read giving an insight into complicated feelings of the writer. Dick Master: Leatherland Under Attack By Roy Klang (Illustrator) Published by Bruno Gmünder GBP 12.95 Next we have a couple of gay comics - this one is the story of Leatherland in danger, where Dick Master is involved in his epic struggle against Sperminator! Leatherland, a futuristic gay Mecca, is in danger of being annihilated by the powerful Sperminator and only the Gay superhero Dick Master and his team can fend off the danger. The year is 3069, and strange and remarkable characters populate this gay metropolis. This work, the first episode of a new comic saga, dazzles with its clear black-and-white aesthetic. "Leatherland under attack" is a unique comic that opens new vistas not only for comic fans but also for gay men of the rough and tumble sort. Sticky By Dale Lazarov (Illustrator) Published by Bruno Gmünder GBP 12.95 Delicately drawn, understated colours, but full of real masculine sexuality! This is why mom didn't want you reading so many comic books… What's cool about Sticky's man-on-man comic action is that it's not just hot, it's also friendly, and, well, versatile." - Unzipped STICKY is the first collection of a Gay erotic comic series written by Dale Lazarov and drawn by Steve MacIsaac that is all about Gay sex. But the stories and art, while incredibly hot and masculine, show how Gay men not only just hook up: they connect. Look close enough and you can almost hear them moaning… ART REVIEW by Laura McGrath Club Noir review - The Jam House - Edinburgh, Easter Sunday The Cambridge guide to Theatre describes burrlesque as satire and ridicule through distortion. However this show is whipping girls, fetish acts and strippers. It included the easter bunny strip, music from Lou Hickey, Hammer and Tongs (two men dancing sugestively)and much more. If you're into your fetish (like most of Edinburgh judging by the crowd you should catch Club Noir while you can. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTSGAY VOICE FOR PERSONALS ============================ (We regret that this service is only available within the UK) To reply to ScotsGay Voice Ads, phone 09068 556613 (calls charged at 60p per minute) and use the number at the end of the ad.
