On Sun 28th May, Delmonicas and the Polo Lounge are offering us a night dedicated to the grooviest funkiest decade of all! Yeah it's the 70's night baby and with drinks at GBP1.50 and the sounds as good as this, it cannot be missed! You can go along and clear your pipes with a 70's Karaoke in Dels and bop away til it's time for work on Monday morning to the sounds of Abba, the Bay City Rollers, Slade and maybe even a bit of Baccara for those of you with the campest side of all! Yes sir, I CAN boogie!! Tucked away in a desolate corner of Glasgow's city centre is the LGBT Centre. The Centre has been established in the city for some years now. Its many services are invaluable to many, yet it can be forgotten because of its remote location. This is a shame, as the people at the Centre are working very hard to cater for as many issues that affect LGBT people as possible. Everything from counselling groups to legal and health advice is on offer. Even the much-valued Steve Retson Clinic runs a night at the Centre. Also on offer is a cafe bar, which caters for those of all ages during the day. An invaluable resource for the under 18's in a city where outlets for meeting other gay people are limited. In the evenings, the bar offers karaoke and holds many social events. The Centre is also used as a hub from which many social gatherings and events are organised. On Fri 26th May the famous Glasgay Ceilidh is being held in the St. Andrew's Halls. Tickets can be purchased at the Centre as well as other venues in the city. Coming up in June is Glasgow's contribution to Pride season, with a march from Blythswood Square down to Glasgow Green where some special events and entertainment are being held. The event is in the planning stages and the organisers are keen for help, so if you want to be involved, and anyone can be, contact the Centre. Details are in the centre spread of this fine organ. It is odd however that over the years, Scotland's attempts at Pride festivals have been somewhat lacking and struggle to compete with the high profile events run by our neighbours south of the Border. Pride should be an amateur event, but funds required to organise events such as this are severely depleted. Scotland is a small country, and our gay population cannot compete with London, Manchester or Brighton. But we do have a thriving gay scene, and never before has being gay been so trendy and worthy of support. But it can be among the gay scene itself where support for Pride events is a bit thin. There are often derisory comments made about how it is run, or who is performing. The point is that it doesn't matter. Whether it's George Michael or Atomic Kitten who are onstage, it's the event, the togetherness and the community spirit that matters. I must admit, I am a reformed Pride supporter. I shunned it for many years, but it is ten years since I went to my first Pride event in London, and I was overwhelmed by what it meant to me. It was the first time I felt that being gay was more than just hanging around bars and clubs at the weekend, getting pissed and trying to pull. It was about spirit and community. Not just being a community within ourselves, but existing comfortably outside of the gay scene. I am always amazed at how many straight people go to these events. How many families want to show their support for gay relatives and friends. Surely we deserve a day that is different. A day that is positive. A day that is a laugh. And yes, it might just rain, but here's the deal: go buy a rainmac and a pair of wellies and live a little! If we give our support this year, then next year it will get a little bigger, and then bigger again, until we have a truly great event. The rest of us have Pride Scotia 2006 coming up and no doubt the odd wedding. If I have one more fight in a card shop about the nonexisting LGBT cards I swear I will end up at Her Majesty's Pleasure. Meanwhile, on the outside, I'll start with all things manly! With the approach of the world cup, Burly has gone all sporty. DJs HiFi Sean and Raymo will be providing the sounds at the Arches on Sat 3rd June. With such a wild and varied theme, I would hope that everyone would try dressing up - shorts or trackies are good. No one can deny the success that these nights enjoy and I'm convinced that the themes are only a part of the reason; you simply get the chance to be yourself without having to worry over size or age. Everyone enjoys the evening and most leave with a smile on their face. Also at the Arches is an exhibit by Ian Healy called Folk. At a glance this may seem as if it is just a set of odd looking portraits but of course it's a wee bit deeper than that. As you get closer you see the skill used to make these weather-beaten and cracked works. On the second Wednesday of each month 'Crosslynx' meets in the LGBT Centre. The group is well run by unpaid volunteers and has a wide range of activities from talks to tips and is a safe place for all those who identify as transgender. There are two new nights in town both billed as LGBT friendly. Disco Bitches is at the Carnival Arts Centre on Fri 16th June. Strathclyde Union will host Digital Harlot on the Sat 10th June. Delmonica's karaoke night on a Sunday is attracting more and more attention for its 'X factor' style performances, both from those who can sing, and those who are convinced that they can. Dels is as cruisy and as busy as ever. Your only problem on a Sunday is trying to find a seat. Revolver are still entertaining a Burly like crowd, that is to say a mixed group of individuals who are comfortable to be themselves. The Quiz nights on Saturdays are picking up and the Camp Sundays, are well worth popping in for. Fri 2nd June will see 'Girls on Top' at Bennets with the lovely Sara. It still packs them in. It has a young looking crowd and is popular with couples. All in all, a good night and one of the few held in Glasgow that is just for women. The atmosphere at the final JOY! was amazing, as a combination of long-standing JOY! regulars, together with lots of new faces, came together to see the night out in style. Queen Maxine kept the momentum up until the very end when Alan and Maggie reassured us that this was certainly not the final end of JOY! So watch this space for details of special event JOY!s. With The Venue closing down, perhaps they will go back to their roots at the Calton Studios? Wait and see! And for all those lovers of cutting edge House, Alan and Maggie will be hosting Upstairs Downstairs on Sat 17th June at Club eGo. Speaking of long-standing club nights, we have to give a mention to the theme night, Tackno. Since I moved to Edinburgh, Tackno has been one of the nights I never miss. It draws a friendly, diverse crowd and is basically all about having fun. Last month was Chav Tackno, and some of the outfits were downright hysterical. I'm talking Farmfoods carrier bags and burberry baby dolls. Tackno is however always a victim of its own success when it comes to bar waiting times and last month was particularly bad, what with the bottom bar not opening until after 1am. I would definitely recommend bulk-buying! The theme for the next Tackno is Safari, (Sun 28th May) so get out your camouflage and you might just hunt down some wild animal yourself. Following on Sun 25th June will be Teenage Tackno. Velvet's Night of Magic and Fortune went down well last month, with Glad doing table magic and tarot readings. I had my tarot read by her, and although I like to pretend I'm a skeptic, I have to confess the woman knows her stuff! Check out Velvet on Sat 3rd June, and remember to get in before 10.30pm for discounted entry. Watch out for Hogmanay tickets too - if last year is anything to go by, these will sell out very quickly. During Eurovision, the pubs were virtually empty for the first half of the night as the contest enticed many people to stay at home. However, Sala got into the party spirit and hosted a Eurovision night, which was a big success. They displayed the event on a big screen and provided complimentary Euronibbles, with the offer of a free drink if you came dressed as a country. Habana too hosted a post-Eurovision party, which made for good entertainment. Planet Out will play host to Sassy Stryker, on Thu 1st June. Sassy is a 7ft tall drag diva whose comedy value and great voice have taken her as far as Thailand. She has appeared in a Channel Four doc shadowing a week in her life, as well as on The Weakest Link. For those of you who haven't been yet, the Rainbow City exhibition runs through until 9th July at the City Arts Centre. This free exhibition, an oral history of LGBT Edinburgh, is the culmination of over two years of research and has lots of cool effects like the Corridor of Fear and voice boxes. This month sees the celebration of Pride Scotia, in Glasgow this year on Sat 24th June. For people who can't make it through to the Weeg, thankfully we can still get into the spirit of Pride here in Edinburgh. Sala are hosting a Pride Party, with Kirsty ( Planet Out Sunday nights) singing live requests and Dejaybird and The Funki Diva ( Furburger) on the decks. Over at eGo we have Fever, a night of alternative/funk/house music which offers something to suit all music tastes, and is a night which over the last two years has continued to get better and better. It would be good to remember the occasion being marked by Pride though. Pride exists to celebrate the birth of gay liberation. The Stonewall Riots kicked off in New York on Friday 27th June 1969, when trannies, dykes and pooves told the world that homophobia would one day be history. Are we there yet? Pix of previous winners (including those of the Dundee heat in April) can be seen at www.mrgayuk.co.uk Down in Leith, it seems that the owners of Mariners (the regular venue for both Burly and Velvet) have bought Bar Sirius in Dock Place. Velvet will be holding a pre-club party there starting on Sat 1st July from 8-10pm with DJs Carpe Diem & Random playing tunes. The usual drinks promotions are promised. Sat 3rd June will see No 18 Sauna filling up with fat hairy men (and their admirers) from 2-8pm for the BearScots monthly soak. I'm sure they can squeeze a few more in if you want to go along! Alan Joy has managed to organise a one-off night for Mingin' at The Bongo Club on Holyrood Road on Fri 23rd June. If this night goes well there is an option of further dates at The Bongo. There will be a limited number of 2-for-1 entry passes at The Regent - just ask. News from The Regent is that they're replacing the whole cellar cooling system with brand new equipment which will work more efficiently and keep the cellar at a much more stable temperature: very important for real ales. Drawback is that it is costing over GBP4000 - eek! Still, at least the new system will not be run using those nasty CFCs. And the scabby exterior will be getting a re-paint too. Their team for the charity Edinburgh Relay Marathon is now organised so hopefully, weather and legs permitting, they will soon be able to raise a lot of money for charity. I'll let you know how they get on. WiFi is becoming very popular these days. So far, access points have made an appearance in The Regent, the LGBT Centre and Sala in Broughton Street (sponsored by ScotsGay) and the newly refurbished Twist in Dublin Street. A lot of students seem to be using the hot spots to access their course work (Twist seems somewhat popular in this regard) and one regular in The Regent seems always to have gaydargirls running on her machine - the dirty midden! If you have the technology, it seems a shame not to use it. And, once you've used it, why not try one of Twist's new Full Sunday Breakfasts - the perfect hangover cure! Pride in Aberdeen 2006 will be held on Sat 3rd June from Noon-7pm. Local bands and companies have signed up to entertain and provide everything that is needed to make Pride a great day out for everyone. Performing on the day are local bands, Little Kicks, The Blue Speckled Mitz's, Diablo, Oceans 3, Babibelz , Duke Joint Rollers & Aveda. Other events on the day include The Youth Tent, Circus and Comedy Skills Workshops, arts and crafts, African drumming plus Our Story Scotland. There will also be the usual market and information stalls and not forgetting the all important beer tent supplied by Indigo & Cheerz. You are invited to attend one of two briefing sessions to be held on Sun 28th May and Thu 1st June at 7.30pm in their office, 46a Union Street - (next to Christies 99p shop). The sessions aim to brief volunteers and stewards. This year they are in need of volunteer bar staff as Pride will be running the bar. Refreshments will be provided, including beer and other drinks. Cheerz, the newest venue on the scene, continues to go from strength to strength with plenty of positive comments being posted on the G Zone website. From Wednesday thru to Saturday, there is plenty of entertainment to keep you going. The Thursday pub quiz is becoming very popular with groups of lads and lasses from around the city and shire. Cheerz also has events planned for the bar after 7pm on Pride day. Paul Writes: "Went out in Aberdeen for the first time since moving here. As a 31 year old follically challenged guy I couldn't drop my jeans to hip bone level and look sultry and cute (leave that to the sultry hipshowin cute barman). I struggled with the new nae fags inside rule - all us fags went outside for a drag on a Marlboro and a chat to the gay gals who were not scary at all, but a good laugh. The inhouse cabaret were a good laugh and not in the slightest bit non-plussed by the initial "don't even think about asking me my name and where I am from" -ness. The gyrating stud got my juices flowing and even the subcontracted female eye candy from the nearby pole/lap bar was game. I remember little of an exodus across the road and through a tunnel, but I am sure it was lovely (to a club I was told later). My younger and cuter pal had a close shave and a quick trim from a hairdresser and I sloped off back to the sticks glowing and a bit pissed. Thanks for the good night anyone who had a direct input and the friendly staff at Cheerz who gave me puggy tokens to take mind of the nae faggin' indoors. Thanks Aberdeen!" Indigo is still Aberdeen's only late night gay venue open 'til 2am Sunday thru Thursday and 'til 3am Friday and Saturday. "The Pink Pigeon" at Bar Indigo is no more, the scheduled Boot Camp Special for Sat 3rd June will no longer be going ahead but will instead be filled with entertainment by the club itself. Sat 10th June is the LGBT Youth Group. at Phace Grampian. The Buddies Group for people affected by HIV also takes place there. Next meeting is on Tue 6th June. Also in the pipeline at Phace are possible new groups and clubs, with ideas such as a monthly film club and the resurrection of the sports club. After all there will be no tickets in the post any more, so there will be no reason for Dundonian posties to be rummaging through your mail. Seriously, I think that a good weekend was had by all - even those like myself who didn't get tickets. It was great to see so many new faces on the scene (fresh meat!!). Charlies is still undergoing its refurbishment, but is already looking fantastic. You can see from what has already been completed that it is going to be a complete change from the Charlies of old and it will hopefully attract all those people who disliked the old place back through its doors. Joyce is also trying out new ideas, the success of the live music last month means that it will be repeated this month. And, as always, Charlies pub quiz will take place the first Tuesday of the month. Brooklyn's seems to grow in popularity every time I am in, now that they have made the place that bit bigger it now caters for those who love their karaoke, but has seats at the back for those who just want a quiet (ish) pint. Brian has put in another pool table, which has proven popular since Charlies has got rid of theirs. They have also re-launched their pub quiz, which takes place every Monday night from 7.30pm. As with Brooklyn's, Out seems to also be growing in popularity, long gone are the days when you go in and double the numbers. The club is getting busy every Friday and Saturday night giving it a great atmosphere. Credit must go to Jamie (Friday) and Dean (Saturday) on the decks for getting everyone up dancing and enjoying themselves. Out is still one of the cheapest clubs in Dundee so you have no excuse. Diversitay's monthly social evening will take place on 21st June in Braes on the Perth Road, this is an ideal opportunity for all of those 'non sceners' to enjoy a pint off the scene but in great company. The evening starts around half past eight and new people are always welcome. Just look out for someone in a Diversitay t-shirt. To many in Dundee, it is the place to go and the place to be seen. Although it is not a gay pub it is very gay friendly and the ideal place to start your night. Women of Dundee… and books will also be at the Dundee Volunteers Fair in City Square on 3rd June, they are having their annual book sale. For those who haven't heard of Dundee Women, they are an organisation that "creates a social space for women" and has different events throughout the year. If you are interested in finding out more, pop down and see them. They would love to hear about any ideas for activities or if you would like to get involved. The Coffee Bean is located close to the centre of Broughty Ferry, on Gray Street just off Brook Street. With an extensive range of drinks and food from a freshly baked fruit scone to a lunchtime or afternoon snack it offers a relaxed environment to enjoy a coffee and a bite to eat while watching the world go by. Following the success of the Coffee Bean, Stephan has opened his second shop on Blackness Avenue in Dundee: Roasters Coffee House. And finally a quick reminder that Our Story Scotland, will be holding an event in Dundee at the DCA on Sat 27th May. It will run from 2-9pm, with different activities along the way, so people can take part all day or choose to participate for particular parts of the day. These are all what I expected at my first ever Eurovision Song contest. Instead I got controversy, booing, rapping and heavy metal rockers in latex masks! Eurovision has been my annual delight for a lot longer than I care to admit (oh okay then Dana in 1970!) and this year I managed prime seats for both the semi-final and final in Athens. First of all, can I just say Athens is a delight. A mixture of the historic and the new with a bit of everything in between. It's a bustling modern metropolis which seemingly sprawls out forever but boasts the most efficient and spotless Metro system I have ever travelled on. And the boys are rather easy on the eyes too! Still basking in the glory of hosting the Olympics in 2004, Athens staged this year's contest in one of its Olympic halls smack bang in the middle of the Olympic complex itself. In fact I'm sure I could still detect a whiff of musky basketball players – or was that just a fantasy???? The hall was huge, holding 16,000 people and dominated by a massive circular stage. The backdrop drew inspiration from ancient Greek theatre and was lit up by a myriad of lights with constantly changing designs. If the contest itself was going to be a disappointment the staging at least would be magnificent! The run up to the semi- final was dogged by controversy – indeed 2006 would possibly be the most controversial ever. From early on the eyes of the media – and gay men – were on one woman. Enter the Icelandic entry, the gloriously over the top Miss Sylvia Knight!! A self made diva with platforms to die for, Sylvia is one of Iceland's biggest stars and her song "Congratulations" let us all know that. "Eurovision nations" she proclaimed "I have arrived" and she certainly had! Her first rehearsal saw her calling the directors "fucking amateurs" which the Greeks took as a slight on their country! (Pity that as the directors were German!). In a later press conference she stated that her aim was to "rid the world of ugliness" – what would she make of the Finnish entry? In an attempt to take the contest back to Stockholm, Sweden's hopes rested on one of their previous winners, Carola. Unfortunately for them and her, she had caused a bit of a stir herself a few years ago by allegedly claiming that in her religion being gay was a sickness.. She proceeded to strut into her press conferences like an over "Botoxed" madame and announced she was setting up a "Camp Carola" to help Swedish youngsters. In truth the woman was vomit inducing but still one of the pre show favourites. She certainly had her fans who tended to be camp gay men of a certain age who obviously chose to ignore her anti-gay comments!! The controversy continued after the semi-final results were announced. Carola got through but two of the hot tips stumbled at the first hurdle. Belgium's Kate Ryan was singing (or trying to) this year's big gay anthem "Je T'Adore" but televoters did not adore her back and so home to Brussels she went!! Much more upsetting to me though was the fact that Sylvia also got booted out. Maybe singing about a golden shower was the final straw for our European cousins. By this time however one nation was beginning to emerge and grab all the headlines. Finland has been entering the contest since 1961 and had never finished higher than sixth. This year for something completely different they sent their heavy rock monsters Lordi. Covered in latex masks and claws they belted out their number "Hard Rock Hallelujah" with the aid of wings, spears and fireworks! After the semis they were many people's tips for the top spot! On to the final itself and it was spectacular in every way. Approaching the venue Paul (my boyfriend) and I had never been so much in demand. The Europeans love the kilt and we were posing for photographs all over the place. Flags from every nation were being waved inside and outside the hall – Eurovision fans can certainly teach football fans how to party. The show was hosted by Sakis – a former contestant and a man I'd willingly brush up against in a lift! Oh there was an American woman there too – but noone could remember her!!! After the opening ceremony – astounding – the songs began led off by a truly dire Swiss attempt!! Highlights for me were Anna Vissi singing "Everything" for Greece, "Tornero" by the dinky Mihai for Romania and the German's Bluegrass inspired "No No Never" by Texas Lightning. Croatia entered a game girl (who features in a Paris Hilton type porn movie) called Severina with a song that translated into "My Stilettoes"!! Only in Eurovision. This year will certainly be remembered as the year of the boos. Sylvia Knight got her share in the semis but they were reserved in the finals for LT United and a song called "We Are The Winners" which the crowd booed with great venom. Don't know why – I loved it and the men were fit!!! More pleasingly for me was the fact that Carola was loudly booed too. Don't know if this was for the fact that she mimed at the dress rehearsal – for which a lot of Greeks paid to see – or if it was her supposed comments about gays. Whatever me and the Spaniards sitting next to booed with great gusto!! Perhaps it worked as Carola limped in at 5th! Although this would be a marvellous result for the UK as our run of poor results continued. Daz Sampson was our entry this year. A denim clad 32 year old attempting to rap with pre pubescent school girls just didn't tickle the taste buds of Europe and it finished in 19th place!! (I'd have had it last as I hated it!) From a very early stage in the voting three numbers were obviously out in front. Bosnia and Herzogovina had a strong ballad with "Lejla" and Russia's pretty boy Dima Bilan with "Never Let You Go" took the runner up spots. So that left only one winner – and a runaway one it was too! Yes the rockers from Finland did it – with the biggest ever winning score!! I tell you, Sylvia must have been furious!!
